Mayor Blackman, Deputy Mayor Crane, Deputy Mayor Joyce Riley from Albion, and Brockport Merchants Association representative Judy Andrew met at Village Hall with the three DOT engineers overseeing the project to learn about the delay and discuss its impact on the Brockport community, particularly village businesses.
On Wednesday, August 21, local and state officials gathered at the Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service (GVAS) headquarters in the town of Gates to honor Dr. Maia Dorsett, GVAS Medical Director, who has been named the 2024 National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) EMS Medical Director of the Year. Dr. Dorsett will be recognized at the NAEMT General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, September 10, and at the Opening Ceremony of EMS World Expo on Wednesday, September 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Dr. Dorsett’s outstanding education, extensive experience as a physician and educator, and her dedication to the EMS field make her a deserving recipient of this prestigious award,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “Her contributions have not only positively impacted the Rochester region but have also made a significant difference across the country. Her expertise
has also played a crucial role in the success of GVAS and in saving countless lives.”
“On behalf of the Ogden Town Board and the residents of the Town of Ogden, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Dorsett on this remarkable achievement,” Zale continued. “We are grateful for her ongoing dedication and the exceptional service she provides to our community.”
Dr. Dorsett, a physician and educator, completed her Emergency Medicine residency and EMS fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis before joining the University of Rochester Medical Center. She also leads EMS education at Monroe Community College and serves as Associate Regional Medical Director for Education and Quality for the Monroe-Livingston Region. Her professional involvement extends to the National Association of EMS Physicians, the National Registry of EMTs, and Prodigy EMS.

The bridge was originally scheduled to open on September 6, then postponed to November 22, and now early February 2025. The Albion bridge, which is on the same contract and farther behind schedule, will reopen on December 19. The contractor (Crane Hogan) has 480 days to complete each project without financial penalty. Failure to do so results in a fine of $7,000 per day (“liquidated damages”), which the NYSDOT deducts from what it pays the contractor.
The major problem causing the current delay is steel fabrication issues, including the lifting posts. The primary supplier for

The pit walls and floors on both north and south ends have been re-concreted; the counterweights (made of metal plates) are in place at the north end. The machinery beams will have to be put in place in notches carved out of the concrete walls. Joe Pye Weed is a beautiful pollinator magnet

Late summer and early fall is the peak time for many garden plants. Joe Pye Weed is one of the most beautiful.
Joe Pye Weed is the common name of several native species which are a pollinator magnet for bees, butterflies, and moths.
Joe Pye Weed additionally is a larval host to at least six native moths, according to Illinois Extension. I read recently how one gardener was not getting monarchs to come to their milkweed plants. They decided to add other pollinator-friendly plants
native to moist woods and meadows from southern Canada to Florida and west to Texas, Iowa State Extension says. It is hardy from USDA Zones 4-9 and grows in full sun and part-shade. It prefers moist soil that is average to rich and will tolerate wet conditions. It does not perform as well during hot, dry summers. Its mauve-pink blooms are large, 12 to 18 inches in diameter, and the foliage is also attractive with three to five long leaves radiating from a central location on the stem to form a whorl.
In your landscape, Joe Pye Weed adds structure. It can reach six feet tall, although plants sold by nurseries are cultivars developed to be somewhat shorter than the native plants growing in the wild. It pairs beautifully with goldenrod, asters, and ornamental grasses which also peak at this time of year.

The common name, Joe Pye Weed, has an interesting history. It is believed that a Native American, whose name was Joe Pye, used the plant medicinally in New England during the early 1800s.
A paper published in 2017 in “The Great Lakes Botanist,” attempted to pin down the actual person who is the namesake for the plant. Authors were able to tie the name Joe Pye to an actual man – a Mohican sachem named Joseph Shauquethqueat.
The paper explains that for the purpose of communication and conducting business, members of the First Nations community would take Christian or white surnames. The surname Pye was frequently used by the Mohicans since the 1730s or earlier.
Authors of the paper believe that like most Mohicans of his time, Joe Pye had knowledge of herbal medicine and likely had some connection to the plant which was observed by others. This resulted in the

Brockport’s Main Street bridge project delayed

Currently, the subcontractors are working offsite testing the recently manufactured lifting posts, which raise the bridge, and making the necessary adjustments and corrections. Trying to rehab a 110-year-old historic bridge, replace most of its parts, and assure it will have at least a 50-year life is challenging. In the words of one of the DOT engineers, “This project is a significant investment into the community and will provide a safe and reliable crossing of the canal for the next generation.”
Most deeply affected by the bridge delay are Brockport’s merchants. Some businesses have
closed, moved, or come under new franchises. Sales are down. The holiday shopping season will take place with the bridge still closed. The Brockport community is encouraged to support downtown merchants: eat downtown, shop downtown, shop locally for the holidays. Mark your calendars for the Midnight Madness Halloween parade (October 25), Black Friday (November 28), Small Business Saturday (November 29), the Holiday of Lights Parade (December 1), and the Winter Market (December 14). Prepare for a grand downtown Main Street celebration when the bridge reopens in February 2025.

Spencerport mentalist performing at Fringe
Spencerport mentalist and mind reader Anthony Prezutti is debuting his all new show at the Rochester Fringe Festival on September 19 and 21 at the JCC CenterStage Theatre.

Sweden to continue current office hours
The Town of Sweden has decided not to change back to their winter office hours and to continue with their summer hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Town Board will discuss office hours in December and decide if these will be the permanent office hours. The hope is that having consistent office hours throughout the year will eliminate any
confusion to residents as to when the office is open for business.

Villa of Hope holding annual Tournament of Hope
Villa of Hope will host their 43rd Annual Tournament of Hope on Monday, September 16, at Deerfield Country Club. The golf tournament event raises funds for Villa of Hope’s programs, which works with more than 3,000 youth, individuals, and families.
Golf action will begin at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start. Players will be able to support Villa of Hope’s mission during the day through a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, along with a poker game, trivia, and putting contest on the course.
Funds raised from this event will help Villa of Hope continue to provide integrated treatment services for mental health, addiction, and substance use disorders; special education for youth with emotional needs; in-home community care services; and their specialized workforce development program.

Square Dancing: Does anyone do it anymore?
Yes, people certainly do still square dance. The Western New York Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs is a regional organization of about 15 dance clubs in the Rochester area as well as parts of the Buffalo and Finger Lakes Region (www. squaredancingrochester.org).
Modern square dance is a great way to exercise to music. The music used nowadays ranges from traditional to Broadway hits to George Strait, Elton John, and Justin Bieber. A square is a “team” of eight dancers working together to execute a series of dance moves given by a square dance “caller” to music. Not only does one get exercise, there is also the opportunity to make new friends and social connections. Every dance lesson is a party. There are square dance clubs, festivals, and camping groups nationwide. There are also square dance cruises and
a National Square Dance Convention held every year in a different city.

Monroe County announces third annual Veterans Day Parade
Monroe County’s third annual Veterans Day Parade will be held Saturday, November 9, 2024. The parade will kick off at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of South Goodman Street and Highland Avenue and proceed up Highland Avenue to the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Gary Beikirch Park on South Avenue.
The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade will be “The Vietnam Veteran,” in recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. A float will carry members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 20 as the centerpiece of the parade.

9/11 – A story from Ground Zero
On Tuesday morning, September 11, 2001, Hilton Class of 1985 graduate Bill Golden went to work as usual on the 38th floor of the World Trade Center Building No. 7. By 8:30 that morning, there was nothing usual about anything on 9/11.
Bill Golden will share his experience of that day during a talk on September 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Quest Auditorium, 225 West Avenue Hilton.
This event is co-sponsored by the Parma Hilton Historical Society and the Hilton Alumni Association. It will kick off the Historical Society’s second Monday programs.

Legislators’ comments show hypocrisy
What a riot! In last week’s Westside News our Republican Legislators wrote about how “thrilled” they are to be offering millions of dollars to our local municipalities for everything from senior services to library support. OMG! Are you kidding me? Have you forgotten that ARPA, the American Rescue Plan Act, was passed by Democrats without any support from Republicans in Congress? These monies saved the U.S. from depression and disaster when COVID hit, but Republicans, then and now in the presidential campaign, call these “handouts” “communism” and denounce the Biden administration for having given them out at all. Blatant hypocrisy and empty promises, I’d say to these Republicans.
In contrast, several Democrats in the County Legislature proposed using at least some of these ARPA monies to immediately fill in the huge gap left by the shortfall of United Way donations which caused many non-profits, including Foodlink, to suffer great loss, in turn affecting their services to the neediest citizens in our community. But the same Republican legislators who wrote to us in Westside News touting their great generosity, voted that proposal down. Why? What a shame their concern is more political blather rather than decisive action to help the people.

The Genesee Community College History Club will once again be hosting the Historical Horizons Lecture Series with a full line-up for Fall 2024 semester. A book talk by local author Tom Schobert General Bennet Riley was a Mexican War hero who made his home in Buffalo and is buried there in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Crafting a narrative based heavily on archival research, Schobert’s novel traces Bennet Riley’s legacy through his 40year military career, his relationships with his wife and family, and his impact on Buffalo history. For Schobert, himself a long-time historical impressionist in the Buffalo area who has portrayed numerous presidents, Mexican and Civil War generals, and other significant figures, the process of putting together this novel is as fascinating a story as the novel itself.

Robert “Peter” Shackelford passed away peacefully in the early morning on Monday, August 19th, 2024, at the age of 82. Peter dedicated his life to his family and wife of 57 years. He was a math mastermind in school and a lineman in the US Army while serving in Korea. A skilled brick mason, Peter built the house of Maureen’s dreams where they cherished their life together. Peter was an avid learner - he attended night school and started working at Kodak in 1976. Peter worked many years as a tool and die worker, advancing his career to a mold maker. He loved to spend time in his own workshop, working on special projects with wood and his many machine tools.
Peter loved being outside in his hammock, having bonfires with his family and playing cards. A movie enthusiast, Peter’s favorite TV show was MASH, and he always had one of his CDs playing; Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, John Denver, and Lionel Richie being some of his favorite musicians.
In younger days, Peter’s childhood home was in Greece, NY. He loved visiting his grandfather’s candy store, and developed a passionate sweet tooth known to many. Some of his favorite desserts being ice cream, cheesecake, kuchen, and lemon shortbread cookies.
Peter is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Marion Shackelford. He is survived by his sister, Joy; and brothers, Marty and Johnny. Peter is also survived by the love of his life, Maureen; and their 4 children, Matthew, Murae, Marisa, and Megan; 11 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
Peter was a man of few words, with fairness being a virtue most important to him. He spread his love equally between his children and grandchildren, whether it be through his generosity, or his loving actions.
We love and miss you forever Pete, Dad, and Grandpa.
A celebration of life will be held privately with details to come. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the Veterans or Children with Childhood Cancer in Peter’s memory.

He is survived by his loving companion, Jean Burke; the mother of his children, Genevieve; his children, Maureen Gates, David Gates, Kathie (Thomas) Straub; his siblings, William (Karen) Gates, Tom Gates, C. Michael Gates, and Sue (Mark) Davis; his grandchildren, Daniel (Taylor) Gates, Natalie Straub, and Kaitlyn Straub; and his nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his parents, Warren and Arlene Gates; and his brothers, Richard, James and John Gates. Bob retired from Eastman Kodak Company, where he was an engineer. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. In his leisure, he enjoyed deer hunting and snowmobiling.

•Griffith, Debra A., died August 18, 2024 at age 71. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Joan Twamley; and her brother, Brian Twamley. She is survived by her husband, John; her sons, Cameron (Kellianne) Griffith and Gregory Griffith; her brothers, Patrick (Janet) Twamley and Matthew Twamley; her grandson, Carter Griffith; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Debra worked as a medical biller at Eastman Dental Center and Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Debra had a passion for music; she spent many years marching in the Hilton Crimson Cadet Marching Band, Rochester Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, and the Mighty St. Joe’s Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps. She met her husband, John, participating in this activity which they both loved.

Kat to her friends, Leener to her family, died unexpectedly in Oneonta, NY on or about August 9, 2024 at age 45. She was born March 10, 1979 the daughter of Gary and Jane Regan Ames and grew up in Spencerport. Predeceased by her dad, along with several aunts and uncles. Survived by her mother, Jane, of North Chili; daughter Era Elinor Ames-Shocklee and her dad Brian Shocklee of Austin, TX; brother John Ames (wife Karen Phillips) and nephew Regan Phillips Ames of Washington State; aunt Elizabeth (Ginn, Tilley) Ryan of Bangor, ME; and many extended family members. She achieved a bachelor’s degree in psychology from St. John Fisher University, Rochester. She continued to pursue her passion for education but that was disrupted by addictions that plagued her throughout her adult life. She enjoyed the companionship of cats and dogs and cared for many over the years.

Ralph is a Veteran of the Navy, a retiree from Kodak and he was also the owner of All Seasons Travel. He was an active member in the Spencerport community. Ralph was in charge of Christmas on the Canal and part of Kiwanis Club of Spencerport and Brockport.
Ralph’s visitation was held on Tuesday August 27, 2024 at Walker Brothers Funeral Home, Spencerport. A funeral mass was held on August 28, 2024 at St. John The Evangelist (55 Martha Street, Spencerport, NY 14559). Three alarm fire at Sunnking in Brockport

On August 26, Brockport Firefighters responded to a reported fire in the building at the Sunnking/ Lineage building on Owens Road. First arriving Brockport Police Officers reported heavy black smoke coming from the building. They assisted employees out of the building.
On arrival at 5:40 p.m., Fire Chief Jose Medina drove around the perimeter of the structure to determine fire load and prepare to give a size-up for other units responding. Because of the involvement of lithium-ion batteries at Sunnking, Chief Medina declared a level zero Haz-Mat incident, activating the County Haz-Mat team to assist in the evaluation of any hazards involved in the building. He also declared a third alarm due to the fire load to bring in additional manpower from surrounding departments.
Units from Hamlin-Morton-Walker Fire District, Spencerport Fire District, Gates Fire District Headquarters, Murray Joint Fire District, Kendall Fire Company, Bergen Fire Department, Hilton Fire Department, Churchville Fire Department and Chili Fire Department assisted at the scene. Units from Albion Fire Department and LeRoy Fire Department filled in at Headquarters on Market Street to cover the District.
The Brockport Police Department assisted in the early stages ensuring all occupants had evacuated the building. The Brockport Fire Police provided traffic control services and scene safety, Monroe Ambulance and Brockport Ambulance provided EMS, and support personnel from the Brockport Fire District set up a rehab station offering bottled water and snacks for the responders as they came out of the fire to keep them hydrated.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Bureau - Fire Investigation Unit.
