Spencerport’s Ranger Robotics Team 3015 competed in the Finger Lakes and Long Island Regionals in March, and with their alliances, won both. The Finger Lakes Regional had 55 teams and Spencerport’s alliance included Canandaigua Academy and Greece Gladiators. Hilton CSD Empty Bowls raises nearly $3,000 to combat hunger locally and globally

On March 14, families and staff gathered at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton to celebrate art and its ability to create positive change. For $5, attendees could select a bowl made by an elementary student and enjoy a simple meal of soup, bread and water. The bowls symbolize all the empty bowls in the world.

Proceeds from the event are donated to Cadet Cupboard, a backpack program that provides nutritious food for students in need, and Heifer International, whose mission is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Thus, the event will help feed those in need both locally and globally. Nearly $3,000 has been raised so far with more donations still coming in.

Volunteers needed for Canal Clean Sweep

Groups across New York State are preparing for the 18th Canal Clean Sweep, to be held April 21 to 23, 2023. Canal Clean Sweep is an annual clean-up event held across the New York State Canal System and Canalway Trail. With more than 100 events and more than 2,500 volunteers expected along the more than 400-mile-long Canalway Trail system and the 524-mile-long Canal system, Canal Clean Sweep is New York’s largest Earth Day clean-up event. This weekend provides opportunities for thousands of residents to give back to their local communities and to show pride in one of New York’s most iconic cultural and recreational resources.

Clean Sweep is scheduled to coincide with the annual Earth Day celebrations on Saturday, April 22. Canal Clean Sweep will be one of a number of events held around the state to recognize the ongoing commitment to improving the health of our natural environment, in addition to being part of a nationwide celebration to encourage people to get outside and enjoy our trails and trail systems.

The 2023 Canal Clean Sweep will take place following a full year of trail use since the completion and opening of the Empire State Trail, a 750-mile multi-use

path spanning the state from Manhattan north to the Adirondacks and west along the historic Erie Canal corridor to Buffalo. Over the last few years, the Canalway Trail system has seen unprecedented use, reflecting significant investments made as part of the completion of the Empire State Trail, and increased interest and participation in outdoor recreational activities due to COVID-19. Through the efforts of volunteers across the state during Canal Clean Sweep 2023, communities will ensure the Canalway Trail system will remain a pristine recreational resource for locals and visitors alike.

anonymous email bomb threats made to the Hilton Central School District on March 22 and 24 were hoaxes that pose no threat to the community.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Greece Police Department responded to and have been investigating both incidents with the assistance of federal law enforcement partners. The threats came from a Russian email account and stated that bombs had been placed in all district schools. No bombs or suspicious materials were found following either threat. Investigators confirmed that a handful of other communities across the country received somewhat similar email threats.

A joint statement issued by MCSO and Greece PD on March 26 said, “The common trait amongst these emails is the use of overseas email addresses and routing the messages through overseas servers, all to conceal their identity. In each of these independent investigations, no credible threat has been identified. We have not found any links between these emails and local individuals wishing harm on the school. This has clearly been a hoax meant to cause panic and disruption in our school community.”

The school district has implemented additional security measures that police say go “above and beyond what is expected for this situation” to ease concerns so students and staff feel safe returning to school.

Westside Challenger Tennis

Westside Challenger Tennis will provide a spring program for students with special needs. Although this program is designed to ensure that students with special needs receive excellent instruction, tailored to their individual skill level, the program is integrated and all players are welcome. Westside Challenger Tennis is based on the United States Tennis Association motto that “people of all ages and abilities should have an opportunity to participate in the game of tennis.”

This program will be held on three Saturdays, April 15, 22, and 29, from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. at the Brockport Central School tennis courts or Brockport Middle School lower gym.

Participants should plan on attending each of the three dates with sneakers. Specially trained tennis teachers will work with all participants, providing instruction tailored to a given participant’s ability. Equipment and refreshments will be provided at no cost. This program has a limited enrollment of 25 participants, accepted on a first come first serve basis. Students with special needs will be given enrollment priority. Those interested are encouraged to obtain registration forms as soon as possible. These forms are available upon request at westsidechallengertennis@gmail.com.

The Parma Hilton Historical Society monthly program will be held Monday, April 10, 7 p.m., in the Ingham Room at the Hilton Community Center 59 Henry Street. Ken Slaugenhaupt will give a presentation on the Holland Land Map Survey. Slaughenhaupt, a retired surveyor and member of the Lewiston Historical Society, will share his knowledge of surveying and the extensive process

that had to be undertaken by Joseph Ellicott and his crews to complete the survey of the Holland Purchase from 1797 to 1800. He will also share the process that was undertaken to recover any remaining markers left of the original survey.

Upcoming crossover traffic pattern along Rt. 390 in Gates and Greece

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists to expect a crossover traffic design beginning Wednesday, April 5, to accommodate construction activities along State Route 390 near Lexington Avenue and Ridgeway Avenue in the towns of Gates and Greece. The crossover traffic pattern, which will be in place through this construction season, will be implemented as follows:

•Southbound traffic along State Route 390 will crossover before Latona Road and return to the southbound lanes after Weiland Road. Southbound traffic will again crossover before Lexington Avenue and return to the southbound lanes after Lexington Avenue.

•Northbound traffic will not crossover but will be reduced to two-lanes of traffic within the project limits.

As part of installing the crossover traffic pattern, nighttime lane closures will be necessary the nights of Monday, April 3, and Tuesday, April 4. Motorists traveling through this stretch of State Route 390 during these nighttime hours should anticipate encountering crews and slow down in the work zone.

This work is necessary to accommodate construction activities for NYSDOT’s previously-announced $18 million bridge rehabilitation project that began last year.

•Goosley, Christopher M. “Goose,” died unexpectedly March 23, 2023 at age 55. Predeceased by his parents John Jr. and Alice Goosley and his sister in-law Peggy Goosley. He is survived by his siblings John (Rose) Goosley, Mary Ann Goosley and Sue (Paul) Henshaw; his adored nephews Sean Goosley, Brandon, Mitchell and Tyler Henshaw; several close cousins, relatives, and a multitude of dear friends whom he considered family from the Brockport Fire Department, Brockport Ambulance Corps and Barber’s Grill and Tap Room. Chris was highly involved with the Brockport Fire Department and Ambulance Corps. He was a proud American and zealous supporter of his Brockport community, military, police, fire, and ambulance organizations.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 1 at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Brockport. A Graveside Service will be held in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in the spring. Debbie is predeceased by her parents, Wayne and Nancy Landries, and her brother, Ron Landries. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his children, Rick (Ann Johnson) Lemcke, Mike (Jeantte) Lemcke, JoAnn (Paul) Fox, and Jane (Ken Long) Lemcke; his two step-daughters, Robin (Jeff) Wright, Debbie (Bob) Chapin; his devoted friends, Barry (Sharon) Kirch; his 14 grandchildren; his five step-grandchildren; his 19 great-grandchildren; his 13 step great-grandchildren; his brothers, Donald “Bucky” (Jackie) Lemcke and Harold “Bud” Lemcke; brother in-law, Chet Delano; sisters-in-law, Arletta Lemcke and Sherri Lemcke; along with his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Red was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Myrtle Lemcke; his brothers, Art, Howard, Richard, Robert, John, Larry and Gerry; and his sisters, Hazel, Florence, Hellen, Shirley, Geraldene and Betty Lou. Red was a Veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean War. In addition to being a retired farmer, he retired from Hilton Central School District Transportation Department, where he worked as a bus driver. He extended his working career at RM Landscape, Inc., followed by KJR Construction. His passion for horses led Red and his brothers to create the Hilton Mounted Drill Team.

Family and friends are invited to attend Red’s Memorial Service on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Hilton Exempt Club, 137 South Avenue, Hilton, where a catered Celebration of Red’s Life will follow his service. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Parma Union Cemetery. •Luksich, Patricia Margaret, died March 19, 2023 at age 78. She was predeceased by her parents, James and June Wilson. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Luksich Sr.; her sons, Robert G. Luksich Jr. and Jeffrey Luksich; her granddaughters, Kelly Luksich, Kristan Luksich, and Brittney Luksich; her grandson, Shane Luksich; her great granddaughter, Kasey Luksich; her great grandson, Owen Luksich; her sister, JoAnn Dudash; her brother, James Wilson; her sister-in-law, Becky Luksich; her brothers-in-law, Ozzie Luksich and Georgie Luksich; and her best friend of 68 years, Kay Luksich. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law, John Dudash. Patricia enjoyed managing her own home cleaning business.

•Pickard, Richard “Dick,” March 12, 2023 at age 82. Dick was the son of Neal and Teodora “Dotty” (Koziel) Pickard. Dick is brother to James (Ann Marie) Pickard and Marsha (Wayne) Hurlburt. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna (Szczepanowski) Pickard; his daughter, Denise (Ryan) Morgan; and sons, David (Julie) Pickard and Douglas (Julianne) Pickard; his six grandchildren, Ashley and Willow Pickard, Justin and Skylar Pickard, and Natalie and Jeffery Morgan. A 1963 Brockport State College graduate, he started teaching 5th grade Math and Science in Kinderhook NY for two years, then taught 5th grade Math and Science at Brockport Central until he retired in 1995. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling with AAA tours.

Richard’s Funeral Mass was celebrated March 31 at St Pius Tenth Church, Chili. AREA – Daniel Sulimowicz of Rochester, formerly of Spencerport, died March 15, 2023. Dan was born October 24, 1970, in Brockport, and lived his entire life with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, confined to a wheelchair. He is predeceased by his parents, Eugene Sulimowicz and Barbara (Walter) Clark. Dan is survived by his step-mother, Katherine Sulimowicz; siblings, Richard (Susan) Sulimowicz, Adeline Montgomery, Sharon (Jen) Robinson-Sulimowicz, Brian Sulimowicz and Theresa Sulimowicz; aunts, Karen Pelow and Claudia Sulimowicz; uncle, Stanley (Karen) Jeffords; several nieces, nephews and cousins; many dear friends.

At an early age, Dan endeared himself to just about anyone who met him. He met local legendary newscaster, Don Alhart during a telethon back in the 1970’s, and to hear Don tell it, Danny took over the show. As he grew older Danny fell in love with sports – all sports – including baseball, football, basketball and hockey. Locally, he went to Red Wings and Amerks games. Everyone at the stadium knew who Danny was. Danny lived a rich full life, experiencing more in his shortened life than most of us. He visited Hawaii. He traveled to NYC to see his Yankees play, and he was even able to visit the locker room. He went to many Buffalo Bills game. His only regret was not seeing his Bills win the Super Bowl.

Dan was a special person. What made Dan special is that despite having the incredible physical burden of his disorder, he never complained or felt sorry for himself. He was upbeat and positive. He knew he had physical limitations, but did not let them limit his life and was positive despite those physical limitations. He was also incredibly smart. To know Dan was to love Dan. Dan was a force of nature. He lived life! In the example he set, and in the friendships he made, he improved many lives.

His Funeral Service was held March 24 at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, Rochester. His Graveside Service was held March 25 at St. Cecilia Cemetery, Oakfield, NY. Donations can be made Special Olympics New York in his memory.

Local author’s book sales to benefit Spencerport Canal Days

Lifelong Spencerport resident, Jay Diedreck, is promoting his fifth fund raiser. This current fundraiser will benefit Spencerport Canal Days which will be held on July 29 and 30, 2023. All sale proceeds will be used to help finance this summer event which includes various forms of entertainment, a vintage car show, the famous Canaligator race, food vendors, a tasting tent, and exhibitors.

All four of Diedreck’s novels have received wonderful reviews and have been sold worldwide. The setting is somewhere along the seaswept coast of Maine in a Victorian village (called Port James), alongside its proud New England lighthouse. His books are filled with adventure, unexpected twists, unforgettable precious characters, as well as family love and fun. Westside Challenger Baseball

Westside Challenger Baseball will enter its twelfth season this year. It is for all area youngsters in Western Monroe, Orleans, and Genesee counties who have physical and/or developmental disabilities and would like to experience baseball that is structured to their needs. Children ages five through 20 will participate in a fun, family atmosphere, and there will be coaches and “buddies” to assist them when needed.

The 2022 season saw a record number of 65 players participate.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from area businesses, service organizations, and private donations, there is no cost to any family to have their child play. Players will receive a hat and jersey, trophies at the end-ofseason family picnic, food and drink after each game, a free photo of each player, and free tickets for players and their families to attend a Rochester Red Wing game.

Challenger Baseball participants learn not only the fundamentals of baseball but also experience pulling together as a team, being cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers.

All games are played on Saturdays at Nietopski Field in the Town of Sweden Park on Redman Road, Brockport. Games begin June 3 with ages five to 13 playing at 9:15 a.m. and ages 14 and up at 10:30 a.m. Westside Challenger Baseball participants will also play on June 10 at the Challenger Baseball World Series at Innovative Field (formerly Frontier Field), the home field for the Red Wings.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual Meeting of the qualified voters of the Gates Chili Central School District, Monroe County, Gates, New York, will be held in the High School, 1 Spartan Way in said District on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. prevailing time. Resolved that the Board of Education of the Gates Chili Central School District is hereby authorized to establish a Capital Reserve Fund pursuant to Section 3651 of the Education Law (to be known as the “2023 Capital Reserve Fund”), with the purpose of such fund being to finance reconstruction and improvement of school buildings and facilities, and the acquisition of furnishings, equipment, machinery or apparatus; such capital costs being of a type that would be eligible for financing under the local finance law, and costs incidental thereto, the ultimate amount of such fund to be $15,000,000, plus earnings thereon, the probable term of such fund to be 10 years, but such fund shall continue in existence until liquidated in accordance with the Education Law or until the funds are exhausted, and the sources from which the funds shall be obtained for such Reserve are (i) amounts from budgetary appropriations from time to time, and (ii) unappropriated fund balance made available by the Board of Education from time to time, and (iii) New York State Aid received and made available by the Board of Education from time to time, all as permitted by law.

CCE Monroe offering Mushroom Inoculation Class

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County is offering a Mushroom Inoculation Class aimed at farmers who are considering commercial mushroom growing, hobby farmers and landowners who are interested in growing mushrooms for their own consumption.

The workshop will take place on Friday, April 14, at Cornell Extension of Monroe County, 2449 St. Paul Boulevard, Rochester, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Fungi produce millions of microscopic spores in the gills underneath the cap. In a natural setting, the spores spread by different means such as the wind or feeding animals. After landing on a suitable substrate – wood or soil, they germinate and form a long network of microscopic rooting threads (mycelium) that persists, often for many years, extracting nutrients and sending up its annual crop of mushrooms.

But many types of edible mushrooms can be grown safely and easily, right at home. Whether you are interested in growing mushrooms as a hobby or have contemplated commercial production, this workshop will provide the information needed before getting started.

The workshop will have an indoor classroom session to introduce participants to growing methods utilized to grow shiitake, oyster, lions mane, nameko, chestnut, and stropharia mushrooms. aintenance, suppliers, and resources will also be discussed.

Following a classroom session, a presentation on outdoor home-grown mushroom cultivation techniques and log maintenance and a hands-on portion will demonstrate inoculation techniques. We will inoculate logs with mycelium that will produce gourmet Shiitake mushrooms for years. All participants get to inoculate and take home their own log that will grow shiitake mushrooms.

Loves chin scritches and head rubs (usually when he gets his wet food). His big, precious eyes will melt your heart! Has a really gentle and sweet meow that he uses whenever the wet food comes out. Ok around calm dogs. Has had bladder issues in the past and got a “roto-rooter” procedure years ago. Neutered but not updated on vaccines. Brody - orange tabby male. About 13 years old. Used to be feral but has made a lot of progress! Isn’t big on pets but will let you get pretty close! He’s still very gentle and has never hissed or swatted or anything, just scurries away. Really just likes to chill in a cat tree and take naps. Would probably have to be an only pet to really come around, but still good around other animals. Neutered but not up to date on vaccines. Sissy - brown/orange tabby female. About 12.5 years old now. Loves head scritches and belly rubs. Definitely craves attention but on her own time. Will rub up against your legs and will stretch on her back legs to get head rubs. Has a funny obsession with slippers. Rachel Best of Bergen, and a member of University of Findlay’s Cattle Team, recently participated in a livestock show. Best competed as part of UF’s team in the fall 2022 North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) that was held in Louisville, KY. It is one of the largest and most prestigious livestock shows in the United States. UF’s team had an excellent showing in the American Aberdeen show. UF added Aberdeen cattle to the Animal Science program in 2008.

Add color with primroses

but not soggy, soil. Do not overwater, as it can lead to root rot. The flower clusters can last for weeks. When they are spent, remove them along with the spent leaves.

Before transplanting outside, acclimate your cottage primrose to outside conditions. For several days, move the plant outside during the day and bring it back inside at night, especially if temperatures drop below freezing.

The New York Botanical Garden recommends planting primroses in partial shade as they prefer climates with cool summers. Again, they like moist, but not soggy, conditions. Keep them out of windy spots that can dry out quickly. Loamy soil is best, but mulching with shredded leaves will help add humus (organic matter) to the soil. You can lightly fertilize them after they are planted. Space them four to six inches apart. If they are happy with the conditions, they may spread and can reseed themselves. enn State says other hardy primrose plants include Primula vulgaris, P. japoni, and P. sieboldii Primula vulgaris, also known as English or common primrose, is semi-evergreen and long-lived. It produced pale yellow flowers in a cluster on six-inch stems in April.

Japanese or candelabra primrose (Primula japonica) loves damp areas in partial shade. Flowers are pink, dark rose, or white and are borne on 12- to 18-inch spikes from May through June. Also native to Asia, the cherry blossom primrose (Primula sieboldii) has 12-inch flower stalks that bloom in mid-May. Bloom colors are cherry red, white, lavender, or pink. The green leaves are ruffled and have toothed margins. In summer, these plants go dormant. Combine primroses with spring-blooming bulbs for an even more colorful show.
