Around June 7, the local community started noticing a male German Shepherd dog wandering through Brockport and Sweden. Sightings spanned from the southern border of Sweden and reached into the village of Brockport and around the SUNY campus, and everywhere in between. This is when Sweden dog control officers, Dave Maynard and Caroline Thompson, stepped in. For the next eight days, this dog would run, walk, and sometimes limp through the streets looking for food and safety. Based on calls and sightings from concerned residents, Maynard and Thompson were tracking him with a well-planned strategy. They received close to 200 phone with the

spot a stray dog. “Please don’t chase dogs who are runners; we have a plan put together to catch them, but we need them in a normal pattern. When chased, they change patterns and we have to start over. The phone calls were great on locations; that helped so much! Never approach a dog that is running. Churchville American Legion supports the Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce

On Thursday, June 22, the Harvey C. Noone Legion Family participated in the Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Tournament. WAA kicks off Giving in July

National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) has kicked off its annual Giving in July campaign. For WAA, this is a month dedicated to celebrating local groups and individuals who participate in the organization’s $5 payback Sponsorship Group program. Through this unique program, supporters ‘Do Good Twice’ through each $17 sponsorship made. Not only will every sponsorship honor our nation’s servicemembers with the placement of a veteran’s wreath on National Wreaths Across America Day, but local nonprofits, civic groups and organizations will receive $5 back from each sponsorship made for their program or other efforts throughout the year.

Since its founding in 2007, WAA has collaborated with hundreds of charities, community programs, and civic groups throughout the country to remember and honor our nation’s veterans and active-duty military all year long. Giving in July celebrates these groups and highlights the opportunity to give back to them through the sponsorship of veterans’ wreaths.

Through this national program, WAA has given back more than $20 million in local contributions

Sweden Clarkson Recreation is holding its fireworks on Monday, July 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at 4927 Lake Road, Brockport. All are invited to bring chairs or blankets and pick a spot to watch this year’s display. The fireworks begin at dusk.

Before the show, hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, drinks and more will be available for purchase. There will be free activities for the kids and pony rides will be available for a small fee.

The Town of Greece Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration returns this year. The 5K Freedom Run will kick off the day’s festivities and lead into a day filled with family-friendly activities including the Super Hero Sprint for kids, food trucks, musical performances including Nik and the Nice Guys and Grand Funk Railroad, family activities, and a fireworks spectacle. “I am excited to once again bring back this beloved community event,” said Supervisor Reilich. “I am thrilled to again bring in a national act along with the other events and activities we have planned this day and throughout the year. Around June 7, the local community started noticing a male German Shepherd dog wandering through Brockport and Sweden. Sightings spanned from the southern border of Sweden and reached into the village of Brockport and around the SUNY campus, and everywhere in between. This is when Sweden dog control officers, Dave Maynard and Caroline Thompson, stepped in.

For the next eight days, this dog would run, walk, and sometimes limp through the streets looking for food and safety. Based on calls and sightings from concerned residents, Maynard and Thompson were tracking him with a well-planned strategy. They received close to 200 phone calls with sightings which helped them develop a pattern that they followed for hours every day. They set up Have-a-Heart traps in the areas that he most frequently visited. The morning of June 15, he finally entered the humane trap and was brought to Hamlin Dog Shelter for some much needed care. When asked what his reaction was to the news of the capture, Maynard said, “So happy! Best day of my dog career – period!”

The dog is currently receiving care at Hamlin Dog Shelter through a team of volunteers who have been feeding him, training him, teaching him to trust, and setting up his medical care. The next steps are to continue to get him healthy and put some weight on, have him neutered, and continue working on manners so he can find a forever home. Maynard estimates that the medical costs will be around $800 to $1,000. For those interested in donating to his care, cash donations are being collected at 58 Main BBQ & Brew or over the phone directly to Clarkson Veterinary Hospital.

WEMOCO students honored at annual SkillsUSA Workforce Development Event

WEMOCO Career and Technical Education

Center student Briana Lewis, from Clarkson, was awarded the high school bronze medal in Dental Assisting at the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Atlanta, on June 21 and 22. More than 6,000 students competed at the national showcase of career and technical education. The SkillsUSA Championships is the largest skill competition in the world and covers 1.79 million square feet, equivalent to 31 football fields or 41 acres.

A total of 1,250 gold, silver and bronze medals were presented to students on Friday night, June 23, at the SkillsUSA Awards Session. Many winners also received industry prizes, tools of their trade or scholarships. Skill Point Certificates were also awarded to the national medalists and to those who met a threshold score in their event as an indicator of proficiency and workplace readiness. Students can add the certificate to their employment portfolio.

Adrian Bartz, from Brockport, was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair.

Students were invited to the event based on their outstanding state-level performance in career competitions held earlier this spring. At the SkillsUSA Championships, each student demonstrated their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in one of 110 hands-on competitions including

robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking.

Industry leaders from 650 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions planned and evaluated the contestants against their standards for entry-level workers. Industry support of the SkillsUSA Championships is valued at over $36 million in donated time, equipment, cash and material. More than 1,200 industry judges and technical committee members participated this year.

“More than 6,000 students from every state in the nation participated in the 2023 SkillsUSA Championships,” said SkillsUSA Executive Director Chelle Travis. “This showcase of career and technical education demonstrates SkillsUSA at its finest. Our students, instructors and industry partners work together to ensure that every student excels. This program expands learning and career opportunities for our members.”

The SkillsUSA Championships event is held annually for students in middle school, high school or college/postsecondary programs as part of the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference.

The national, nonprofit partnership of students, instructors and industry is a verified talent pipeline for America’s skilled workforce that is working to help solve the skills gap.

Movies in the Park returns this summer

Scavenger hunt for Never Forget Roses to proceed screenings

Monroe County’s Movies in the Park returns for summer 2023 with a series of family-friendly movie screenings.

“Movies in the Park combines family movie night with outdoor fun in Monroe County’s spectacular parks,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “This is a special year to bring your family to the parks. To honor our veterans, Monroe County partnered with the Veterans Outreach Center to launch the Never Forget Rose Campaign. So bring your family and enjoy great movies, join in the scavenger hunt, and have fun exploring.”

Movies in the Park will run through September 1. All movies will begin at dusk, approximately a half hour after sunset. The event dates are as follows:

•The Greatest Game Ever Played – July 7 at Durand Eastman Golf Course

•Atlantis – July 21 at Ontario Beach Park

•Rookie of the Year – July 27 at Innovative Field

•Rogue One – August 11 at Highland Park

•Hook – August 18 at Mendon Ponds Park

“We’re pleased to bring back our Movies in the Park program for another summer,” said Patrick Meredith, director Monroe County Parks. “This program is a great way to bring folks to the parks to enjoy some time outside with their families.”

County Executive Adam Bello, the Veterans Outreach Center (VOC) and the Monroe County Veterans Service Agency (VSA) announced in May the launch of the Never Forget Rose campaign in honor of the VOC’s 50th anniversary of service to our veterans. Residents can search for one of 450 handcrafted copper roses designed, created and donated by award-winning local metal artist Marc Gaiger at special events in most county parks throughout the summer.

The Never Forget Rose Campaign is presented by the West Herr Auto Group and gold sponsor Dale Carnegie of Northeast and New England.

Each rose has a numbered tag with a URL and QR Code. The number is linked to a local veteran who served our country with distinction and paid the ultimate price for their service. The finder of each rose can enter their rose number at monroecounty.gov/never-forget to locate the name of their veteran and which memorial bears that veteran’s name. Fifty of the 450 copper roses are tinted red for the 50th anniversary of VOC. Finders of the red roses are invited to carry their rose in the county’s second annual Veteran’s Day Parade on November 12, 2023.

“The importance of this campaign cannot be understated. America’s greatest gift is the Gold Star Family,” said Nick Stefanovic, director Monroe County Veterans Services. “We have many here in Monroe County. We can see the names of their children written on the rose tags and hence inscribed in our memorials. Through innovation, creativity, and generosity Monroe County has found a way to facilitate the education of our citizens about the sacrifice that these families have made for this country. We can use this as an opportunity to learn about who these service members were in life. As a Marine Corps veteran of the war in Afghanistan and the director of the Monroe County Veterans Service Agency, I am thankful to County Executive Adam Bello, director of the Monroe County parks department Pat Meredith, and owner of the Rochester Red Wings Naomi Silver for partnering to support this initiative by making it a part of Movies in the Park.”

Prior to each movie showing there will be a scavenger hunt where attendees will have an opportunity to find the roses. For the movie screening at Innovative Field, the first 45 families will receive a rose as they enter.

GCC President announces retirement

After more than a decade of leadership and service to the institution, Genesee Community College President, Dr. James Sunser, announced that he intends to retire at the conclusion of the 2023-24 academic year.

In a personal message, Sunser informed the campus community and thanked colleagues for being partners in always holding student success as the highest priority.

“My time at Genesee has represented some of the most rewarding of my long professional career in higher education,” said Sunser. “I have been honored to serve a dedicated board of trustees, faculty and staff that always put students and their success at the center of every decision. I could not have asked for more and I will leave with a heart filled with gratitude. I want to thank the entire GCC community for the support and friendship you have offered me over so many years.”

During his time leading GCC, Sunser oversaw the development of the Richard C. Call Arena and the Student Success Center, capital projects that represented the largest fundraising efforts ever undertaken by the college. He also provided leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic that drastically altered the delivery of services, never wavering from the commitment to putting students first.

Prior to his service at GCC, Sunser held several senior level positions at SUNY Onondaga Community College over a 22-year period. In addition, he served five years as an administrator at Syracuse University. He currently serves as the Immediate Past Chair of the Middle State Commission on Higher Education’s Executive Committee, where he previously served two terms as Chair in 2020 and 2021.

•Movies in the Park, a series of family-friendly movie screenings, runs through the summer with all movies beginning at dusk, approximately a half hour after sunset. Prior to each movie, there will be a scavenger hunt where attendees will have an opportunity to find Never Forget Roses honoring local people who served our country and paid the ultimate price for their service. The Greatest Game Ever Played will be screened July 7 at Durand Eastman Golf Course.

Brockport’s Summer Serenades begin July 13

The twelfth season of Brockport’s Summer Serenades series provides eight weeks of free live outdoor music appropriate for all ages. This year’s line-up includes many bands sure to elicit a lot of toe tapping, dancing, and perhaps singing along. The music, which can be heard from both sides of the canal, is set up at the Village’s Welcome Center, 11 Water Street, with plenty of room for the folding chairs and blankets that people like to bring. While alcohol is not permitted, people are welcome to bring food, especially if purchased from any of the nearby eateries. The Welcome Center regularly hosts boaters, too, and a public rest room is available on site. In case of inclement weather, events will be moved indoors to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at the nearby corner of Main and State Streets.

Online registration is now open for the 18th annual in-person Daniel’s Race, a 5K run/walk at Churchville-Chili Middle School planned for Saturday, August 12.

Participants can register or donate by clicking the Register link on www.daniels5k.com. The registration fee is $25, and registration packets/race bibs can be picked up at the Rochester Running Company on Mt. Hope Avenue.

The race is in memory of Daniel Myslivecek, who lost his more than two-year battle with Stage IV Metastatic Melanoma. The community united as Daniel ran the first 5K in March 2006 and passed away that June. Daniel’s dream was to serve others and his legacy has raised melanoma awareness.

Camp Invention®, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment program, is coming to Churchville-Chili’s Chestnut Ridge Elementary School the week of July 17 through July 21.

A program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame®, in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in grades K-6 to tap into their natural curiosity and use their creativity to solve problems. Through hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning; builds confidence, leadership, perseverance and resourcefulness; and encourages entrepreneurship – all in a fun and engaging environment.

Price includes instruction, range balls. All Camp dates will be held as scheduled. In case of bad weather, instruction will be held inside. All Juniors will be required to have an adult present if you choose to play the golf course following the camp. Alma A. Partyka

Alma A. Partyka was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all. All who knew her called her “Gram”. She passed away peacefully at Elderwood of Lakeside in Brockport on June 25th, 2023 at the age of 96. She is predeceased by her husbands Wilfred “Pete” Gallo and Edmond Partyka, many siblings and daughter-in-law Nancy Gallo.

She is survived by her children, Peter Gallo, Sheila VanScooter and Patricia (John) Buzard; grandchildren Bob (Kim) Interlicchia, Jamie Harvey (Brandon Tobin) and Carrie Buzard (Nate Jones); great grandchildren Haley and Chloe Interlicchia, Justin Harvey, Zoie, Alivia and Johnathan Jones and many nieces and nephews.

Alma was born on November 6th, 1926 in Pittsford, NY and moved to Brockport at the age of 16. She worked at the Brockport Button Factory, Kodak, waitressed for many years at the Lincoln Restaurant in Brockport, NY and later worked at and retired from Brockport Enterprises. Alma loved spending time with her family. She was a member of many church groups associated with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hamlin and a member of the Twig Association at Lakeside Hospital. Alma lived a wonderful life and will be missed by many.

A Graveside Service was held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Brockport.

Louise was a longtime member of St. Pius Tenth Church and the St. Pius choir. She was a retiree of Eastman Kodak Company and enjoyed music and playing her piano. •Lasch, Joyce M., died June 22, 2023 at age 70. She was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Wilma Lasch; her sisters, Judy (John) Hazen, Jan Meissner, and Jean (Dennis) Boldt. She is survived by her brother, Richard (Diane) Lasch; her brother-in-law, Herb Meissner; her nieces and nephews, Paul (Char) Lasch, Mark (Cathy) Lasch, Ann List, Kelly (Bill) Carney, Katie (Kevin) Gundell, Doug (Angie) Meissner, Dan (Jody) Meissner, Tim (Amy) Boldt, Valerie (Rob) Scheffert and Cindy (Brian) Serrano; 24 great nieces and nephews; and several great-great nieces and nephews. Joyce was retired from her job as an Administrative Assistant for NYS Unified Courts in Rochester. She was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hamlin. Her faith and her church family were very important to her. She loved spending time with her nieces and nephews.

•Chattin, Frederick E., died June 23, 2023. Fred was born in Walker, NY to Mildred and Orville Chattin on May 24, 1942. He was a 1961 gaduate of Hilton Central School. In 1963 he married the “Penny” for his thoughts, Carol, and at the time of his death they had just celebrated their 60th Anniversary. Fred served in the US Army. He retired from General Motors and was a Life Member of the Walker Fire Department and Walker Fire Exempts, particularly involved with the fire police. He enjoyed hunting, the gun club, gardening, and time spent outside. Fred is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughter, Carin; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale (Doris) Penny, Gary (Kathy) Penny; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sonin-law, Mark Hale; his niece, Christine Penny; his nephew, Duane Brayley; his sister, Nancy; his brother, Ross; and his sister-in-law, Shirley.

•Frisbee, Lawrence M. “Larry,” died June 23, 2023 at age 93. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet; and his siblings, Jack Frisbee, Dorothy “Dottie” Burton, and Helen Priestley. He is survived by his children, Ronald Frisbee, Randy Frisbee, Gary (Robin) Frisbee, Mark (Debbie) Frisbee and Julie (Royce) Klatt; his grandchildren, Christine (Joe), Jessica (Santo), Joshua (Tori), Cathleen, Kerrilyn (Zach), Dawn, April (Phil), John, Emily, and Justin; his12 great-grandchildren; and his nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Larry was retired from Eastman Kodak Company, where he was a Truck Driver. He was a talented carpenter who built his own home. He was proud of the Frisbee family traditions he enjoyed with his family. In his leisure, he enjoyed turkey and pheasant hunting, fishing, and tending his vegetable garden.

Robbin was a retiree of Eastman Kodak Company. She loved to camp; beginning with tent camping and then campers. She loved owls, her dogs, and mostly her family.

Spencerport – Passed away peacefully at age 80 in Highland Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born and raised in Pennsylvania and is predeceased by his parents, Miriam (Fessler) and Richard Marvin, Sr. He is survived by his loving wife, Lois (Koch) Marvin; brother, Charles and Diane (Gregory) Marvin of Sayre, Pa; children, Jennifer (Anthony) Fourcault of Foss, Oklahoma, Richard & Michelle (Keenan) of Mishawaka, Indiana and Megan (Keith) Brisbane of Alexandria, Alabama; grandchildren, Benjamin and Joshua Marvin, Christopher Fourcault and Alexander Brisbane; a brother-in-law David (Julie Smead) Koch from Wisconsin, as well as many cousins, and his best fishing “bud” Carl Coleman of Spencerport, NY. He retired from BOCES 2 after a career in the electronics field. He belonged to the Garbutt Rod and Gun Club and spent many happy hours fly fishing on Springbrook and Oatka Creeks. He also enjoyed working on projects in the past with the Spencerport Rotary Club. Dick spent many enjoyable hours traveling with Lois in their motor home around the US and Canada. They belonged to the Family Motor Coach Association and made many friends through FMCA.

The Board of Education has appointed Ingél Schmidt as an assistant principal of Spencerport High School, effective July 1.

Schmidt’s experience in education spans 17 years, beginning in 2006 as a math teacher for the Greece Central School District and Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. In 2008 she joined the faculty of the East Irondequoit Central School District, teaching math. She has also served as a math curriculum leader and team leader, International Baccalaureate coordinator, and an AVID teacher and coordinator. AVID is an in-school academic support program for middle and high school students to prepare for college eligibility and success.

Among her career highlights so far, Schmidt has: received the EICSD teacher of the year honors for 2014 and 2017; been active on the diversity and equity committee; and collaborated on the district’s earning International Baccalaureate status.

Schmidt earned her bachelor of science and master’s degrees in mathematics education from SUNY Brockport and Stonybrook University, respectively. She also earned her post-master’s graduate certificate in education leadership from Stonybrook.

“Ms. Schmidt’s experience as an educational leader in East Irondequoit will be a great asset to our high school team,” said Ty Zinkiewich, superintendent. “Her energy and professional expertise will serve Spencerport well and we are pleased to welcome her to our school district.”

Hoch appointed Taylor Elementary principal

The Spencerport Board of Education has officially appointed the next principal of Taylor Elementary School.

Danielle Hoch, who comes to Spencerport from the Greece Central School District, will fill the open leadership position, after Telcie Pincelli was named the new director of humanities. Her start date has yet to be determined.

“Ms. Hoch impressed the interview committee with her passion for literacy and strong commitment to the academic and social emotional needs of our students. We’re excited for her to join the district and believe that she will be a strong advocate for the Taylor learning community,” said Ty Zinkiewich, superintendent of schools.

Her career spans more than 22 years in education as an elementary classroom teacher, literacy coach, reading specialist and assistant principal. More recently, she served as an elementary principal in the York Central School District then as an assistant principal in Greece at Longridge Elementary School. Hoch earned a bachelor of science in elementary education from Buffalo State College, master of science in literacy education from Roberts Wesleyan College, and certificate of advanced study in educational administration from SUNY

Erin Shaw joins Hilton HS as assistant principal

Erin Shaw was appointed to the position of Hilton High School assistant principal at the Board of Education’s June 13 meeting. She replaces Carol Saladzius who is relocating out of state.

Most recently, Shaw was assistant principal at Spencerport High School, including overseeing the Academy program. Prior to that, she worked for 20 years at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School as a math teacher, instructional coach, and teacher on special assignment. During that time, Shaw also received National Board Certification and was a NYS Master Teacher.

Shaw’s education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in secondary education with a concentration in math from SUNY Plattsburgh, a master’s degree in educational technology from Nazareth College, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational leadership from SUNY Brockport.

“I am thankful that my journey in education has brought me back home and given me the opportunity to serve the district where my heart belongs,” said Shaw.

“I am excited to walk through familiar doors and once again become a member of the Cadet family.”

Boston Tea Party participant to be commemorated

The Town of Sweden will join with the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum to place a commemorative marker on the grave of Joseph Roby who participated in the Boston Tea Party. The event is planned for Monday, July 10, at 11 a.m. at the High Street Cemetery (located in the Village of Brockport).

Little is known about Joseph. He was the son of the Reverend Joseph Roby of Lynn, Massachusetts, and was 20 years old at the time of the Boston Tea Party, December 16, 1773. He is credited as “active in the destruction of the tea.” After the Revolution, he lived in Boston and Hanover, New Hampshire. He died on April 13, 1836, and is buried at High Street Cemetery which is owned and operated by the Town of Sweden.

The end of copper wire landline service is a step backwards

My mother relies on her landline to communicate in Spencerport. She has a cell phone, but she has trouble using it, and often misplaces it. She needs a phone that always works and that she’s comfortable using; it’s why she’s kept her landline, even as prices have gone up over the past 10 years.

That’s why I was skeptical when her landline provider “upgraded” her service to “digital home phone service” – a landline alternative that tied her phone to her internet rather than old-fashioned copper wire.

It brought her bill down significantly, but it came with a cost. The call quality is terrible, and since her internet is spotty, her phone often doesn’t work at all.

When we couldn’t get her old service back, I discovered that, last August, the FCC deregulated the telecom industry, and authroized phone companies to shut down traditional landlines nationwide and switch users to internet-based services.

Landlines are lifelines for 2.6 million seniors in New York. Having to rely on expensive landline alternatives that have poor call quality and stop working during power outages, puts seniors like her at risk.

I understand that landlines may not be “profitable” for the phone company to provide anymore. But this is why our Government exists – we regulate essential industries like telecommunications because not doing so leaves our most vulnerable people in the dust.

If the FCC won’t look out for our seniors, the Government should step up. I implore our local leaders in Spencerport to advocate for the most vulnerable members of our community, and fight to keep true landline phone service alive.

Chili Presbyterian scholarship

The Board of Deacons has announced the recipient of the 2023 First Presbyterian Church of Chili Scholarship: Aidan Snover. The 2023 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School is the son of Lisa Snover and Jeff Snover.

“We are so proud of his accomplishments both at school and at church. We have watched him grow into an amazing young man, with a strong work ethic and a desire to help others,” said a church representative.

Two of his teachers described Aidan as ambitious, hard-working, willing and able to tackle difficult tasks, a good leader, and a great teammate – all qualities that will help him to succeed in college and life.

all of the love and support he has received from the church throughout his life. His experiences with his Youth Group on the Mission trips – meeting so many new people, sharing his faith with others and being part of a team that completed a project to help others – are examples of how Chili Presbyterian has helped give him the foundation to be successful in college and face any challenges that may come his way.

A bit about bolts and the Brockport bridge

Who hasn’t noticed the rust on the Park Avenue and Main Street bridges in Brockport? New bridge parts are less subject to rusting because they are made from galvanized steel (an iron-zinc alloy) which prevents oxygen and water from reaching the steel and slows corrosion. All new structural bridge parts must be made of steel manufactured in the United States. These new galvanized steel bolts for the Main Street bridge are samples from different lots. The Willie Bee Foundation is holding a blood drive in memory of Will Beeman on Thursday, July 27, from 1 to 6 p.m. in the meeting room at the Spencerport Fire District, 175 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport. Appointments are recommended.

Founded by Clay and Christine Beeman in memory of their son, the Willie Bee Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization that supports local families whose children have life-threatening illness.

This blood drive is held every year, often in July because that is when Will, at just three months old, was diagnosed with At/Rt brain cancer. He received many blood transfusions throughout his 20-month fight. Will was a warrior, and the foundation’s goal is to have a full appointment schedule to honor him.

FASNY urges residents to leave fireworks to the professionals

As New Yorkers gear up for Fourth of July festivities, the Firefighter’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) warns about the dangers of fireworks – both legal and illegal.

FASNY urges New Yorkers to plan ahead and follow some key rules to avoid accidents and injuries.

Fourth of July celebrations can cause a great number of emergencies.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks were involved with an estimated 11,500 injuries in 2021, 66% of which occurred in a one-month period around the July 4th holiday. The New York State Department of Health stated that 218 New Yorkers required care from an emergency department for fireworkrelated injuries in 2020, with 56% of incidents occurring in the month of July. It is important to remember that in many cases, the individual injured was not always the individual using the fireworks.

“As New Yorkers prepare to celebrate Independence Day with friends and family, we urge everyone to take into account the dangers associated with both legal and illegal fireworks and review firework safety tips and preparedness plans,” said FASNY President Edward Tase Jr. “The safest way to enjoy fireworks and avoid firework-related injuries this Fourth

of July is at professional firework displays in your community.”

Between June and July 2019, 7,300 firework-related injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms with sparklers accounting for almost onequarter of emergency room fireworks injuries. Sparklers, which are legal in the state of New York, burn at nearly 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. FASNY urges all New Yorkers to leave fireworks to the professionals.

Tips from the NFPA and FASNY:

•Attend a local, professional fireworks show

•Livestream a virtual fireworks show

•Use glow sticks instead of sparklers

•Resist the temptation to get close to the firing site – the best view of a professional fireworks display is from a quarter of a mile or more away

•Do not possess or shoot off illegal fireworks on your own. Besides risking injury to yourself and the crowd watching the demonstration, you will be breaking the law. Fireworks, with the exception of handheld and groundbased effects and sparklers, are illegal in New York.

•Do not pick up or attempt to re-light used or “dud” fireworks – they may still cause serious burns or injury. Provided information

Boaters need an increased focus on safety over the July Fourth holiday

Lakes, launch ramps and harbors will again be crowded on the boating season’s traditional peak holiday period surrounding the July Fourth holiday. As the number of boats, personal watercraft and paddlecraft goes up, boaters should look no further than recently released annual U.S. Coast Guard statistics for some lessons on how to keep everyone aboard safe during this busy time of the year, especially for on-water fireworks shows.

According to data from the recently released 2022 Recreational Boating Statistics, the top five primary contributing factors in boating accidents last year were operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed and machinery failure.

“Nearly all of these factors will come into play on the water around Independence Day, and especially on the evenings with fireworks shows when boaters congregate to view them,” said Chris Edmonston, BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water president.

“After the show ends, as boating spectators pull anchor and head for home en masse, is really when a boat operator will experience the significant difference from operating during the daytime.” Edmonston explains that it is much more difficult to distinguish boat speed, direction or angle, and distance to other moving vessels at night. “Double check to ensure your navigation lights are working properly to ensure others see you,” he said.

Compounding the problem is the race to get home. “Many simply travel too fast for the conditions,” he said. “Everyone is leaving at the same time, and you will really need to focus on safety. Use others on your boat as extra lookouts, and keep your eyes focused ahead while scanning around you.”

Additionally, a long day on the water means stressors such as sun, wind and wave action degrade a boat operator’s ability, and adding alcohol to the mix only makes the situation

worse. It’s much better to celebrate America’s birthday and imbibe when you are at the dock or safely ashore. Because everyone wants to see the show, overloading is also a real issue this time of year. Small vessels are prone to swamping in the wake action that follows the close of a show. Weight and balance should be top of mind for small boat operators.

Paddlecraft will also add to the onwater congestion this time of year. Paddlers may not have the full set of safety skills and may not be easy to see, or they might be paddling on highly trafficked waters, so keep an eye out for them.

Finally, before you head out at night, know how to dim the brightness on your chartplotter or GPS, check your running lights, and ensure your visual distress signals are available if you find yourself in need of assistance.

GCV&M to host annual Independence Day Celebration

Genesee Country Village & Museum welcomes visitors to kick off the summer season with the living history museum’s annual Independence Day Celebration on Tuesday, July 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. With a 19th-century-style parade, a moving Naturalization Ceremony, musical performances, pie eating contest, and more – there’s no better place to celebrate the birth of our nation. plus, thanks to support from Monroe County, all kids 12 and under will receive free admission. This event is sponsored by M&T Bank.

Visitors to the Independence Day Celebration will enjoy live musical performances, historic games on the Village Square, special food and drink offerings in the Depot restaurant, and more. Crowd favorites include the 19th-century-style parade that makes its way around the Historic Village, pie eating contest, tug-of-war competition, and more. Visitors will also have the opportunity to hear a recitation of “The Declaration of Independence” and “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” by David Shakes of the North Star players.

returning this year is the Naturalization Ceremony, during which visitors will celebrate along with individuals from a number of countries all over the world as they are sworn in as new American citizens by the Honorable Judge Mark W. pedersen in the

unique setting of the museum’s Historic Village. The Naturalization Ceremony will begin on the Village Square at 11 a.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the 19th-century Historic Village, where costumed historical interpreters will be demonstrating traditional trades, cooking over open hearths, tending to farm animals, and more. Walk through beautifully maintained heirloom gardens, explore historic homes from around the Greater rochester area, chat with knowledgeable interpreters, or relax and take in the view.

Tickets for Independence Day are currently available online at https://www.gcv. org/event/independence-day-celebration/ and purchasing tickets in advance is recommended to get the early bird discount. Independence Day tickets are $23 for adults, $20 for seniors (62+), $20 for students (13 to 18), and youth (12 and under) are free. Visitors are encouraged to buy tickets online and save as there will be a small additional fee for tickets purchased at the door. Museum members can attend Independence Day for free.
