In volleyball, junior Kendall Havener had 48 kills in four matches and 15 sets and was named Player of the Week. She added nine blocks with a .477 hitting percentage and ranks fifth in the conference in total blocks, third in solo blocks and ninth in kills.

Freshman Courtney Taylor had 46 kills over the same 15 sets and was named Rookie of the Week in volleyball. She ranks second on the Redhawks with 249 kills this season.

And senior Rachel Prutsman was named Runner of the Week in cross country after she finished sixth in the Eastern Michigan University 5k in 17:57.1.

Oliver Middle School students bake treats for dog shelter - Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School students are working on making community connections as part of their sixth grade Family and Consumer Science curriculum. They recently prepared dog treats for the Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter in Hamlin.

In coming installments, we’ll interview other new and veteran business owners from around the Westside News Inc. delivery area. This week’s “In Business” features the Johnson House in Churchville.

Repeat customers key to 37 years of restaurant’s success

by Kristina Gabalski The Johnson House Restaurant has been a landmark at 19 South Main Street in Churchville for generations.

Loyal customers flock to the family owned steakhouse for both its fine quality food and its cozy and friendly atmosphere.

Peggy Naughton and her late husband, Michael, purchased the Johnson House in 1977. “Business is excellent 37 years later,” Peggy says.

The establishment is housed in a brick building constructed as a hotel in 1885 and which also served as a stage coach stop at one time, Peggy says. The main floor features banquet, private party and meeting rooms and the lower level features the lounge and open hearth grill.

V.I.P. Caterers, which Peggy started nearly 30 years ago, offers full service catering for banquets, corporate events, weddings and special occasions.

Q: How did you come to own the Johnson House?

The Naughtons had no previous experience running a restaurant when Mike brought Peggy to the Johnson House to celebrate her birthday.

“I had never had a drink in my life,” she says. Bill McCombs, who owned the restaurant at the time, chatted with the couple at the bar and casually suggested, “You ought to buy the place,” Peggy remembers.

She took it as a joke, but Michael, a contractor, found the idea appealing, telling Peggy that continuing in his physically demanding job would get more difficult as he got older.

The couple had eight children, and all have worked at the restaurant over the years, Peggy says. Eleven of her 19 grandchildren “have also gone through the ranks,” at the Johnson House, she adds. One of Peggy’s daughters and two grand-daughters continue to help out, particularly on weekends.

Peggy Naughton says Johnson House customers enjoy not only the menu options but also the piano music on weekends.

Q: Why has the Johnson House remained successful for so long?

“We have tremendous repeat clientele,” Peggy explains.

“They come from all over the area. We are booked out every Friday and Saturday. Repeat customers are the backbone of every good business.”

Peggy says her regular clientele are especially important in today’s business climate, particularly with the growth in restaurant chains.

She works hard to connect with her customers and is “on the floor” every night interacting with diners.

“We know where our regular customers want to sit and what they want to drink,” Peggy says. “We’re able to stay on top of things. (At chain restaurants) there’s no one to welcome you.”

Clientele also enjoy music on the baby grand piano every Friday and Saturday night, Peggy notes.

Q: What makes the Johnson House so special?

“We offer good food at reasonable prices and good drinks at reasonable prices,” Peggy explains. “There is an ambience when you come down.”

The Johnson House offers an extensive menu with specialty drinks, a Friday Fish Fry as well as steaks, chicken and seafood including chateaubriand steak, lamb chops, frog legs, and the ever popular broiled seafood platter. Each entree comes with a salad and potato.

“We take great pride in the authenticity of our food,” Peggy says. “We have the open charcoal hearth ... you can watch your dinner prepared in front of you.”

Q: What about the future of the business?

About ten years ago, one of Peggy’s sons called her from Singapore, where he was living at that time, and offered to buy the Johnson House, saying he could run the business from there.

Peggy told him she would sell it for, “one million dollars,” and the two agreed that, “he would call me again in ten years,” Peggy says.

They did just that recently while vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard and Peggy says (tongue-in-cheek) that this time, they decided on a 20-year plan, with her son telling her, “then you will only be 98 when you retire,” she says.

“As long as I am healthy and my mind is still with me, I will keep going,” she says. “I’ve worked since I was six.

I don’t know what it’s like not to be busy.”

Adam is a 2005 graduate of Spencerport High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in economic crime investigation from Utica College in 2009. Adam is employed by Transcat as a Financial Analyst.

Stacy Brisbane and Dustin Welch were united in marriage October 11, 2014 in The Chapel on the Hill, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Rochester.

Stacy is the daughter of Mike and Nancy Brisbane of Michigan, formerly of Spencerport. Dustin is the son of Daniel and Lanette Welch of Buffalo, and Susan Welch and Michael Patterson of Jacksonville, Florida.

Alyssa L. Walter and Nicholas A. Contestabile were married July 19, 2014 at Bristol Harbour Resort, Canandaigua.

The bride is the daughter of Tammy Lepki of Spencerport. The groom is the son of Cynthia and Thomas Martin of Holley and Domenic Contestabile of Rochester.

Debt free in 2014 Village of Hilton will make its final bond payment on Nov. 15

by Grace Griffee It’s official – when the Village of Hilton makes its final payment for street lights on November 15, the municipality will be debt free. The final bond payment will be made on a street lighting system that the Village purchased from Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) in 2007. At the time, taxpayers were paying $127,000 a year to RG&E for street lighting in the Village, so Hilton officials decided to purchase the system saving taxpayers up to $50,000 annually in lighting tariff fees set by the state. “The annual savings over the course of the seven years has provided funds to repay the bond,” said Mayor Joe Lee. The lighting bond is the municipality’s only debt.

Shari Pearce, Hilton manager/clerk, attributes the Village’s financial health to many factors, including past and present administrations, preplanning and working with other municipalities. “We work to stay within our budget and find ways to save when we can,” she said. “Governments have been getting negative publicity lately and this is just the opposite – we are managing our tax dollars well.” The average village tax bill in Hilton is around $300, which includes refuse pick up.

Michael McHenry, Department of Public Works superintendent, points to his department’s equipment replacement schedule and capital reserve fund as a way the village plans ahead for large expenses. For example, to replace a $250,000 refuse truck, the Village is using $169,000 from the capital reserve fund and paying for the remainder out of this year’s budget. “The Village Board realizes the importance of having the right equipment and good equipment, and how that makes our department more efficient,” said McHenry. The Village owns 30 DPW vehicles, which have service lives from 10 to 25 years depending on the vehicle.

The Village’s sewer project, which involves replacing some manholes and relining old sections of the 36-mile system, is being completed over 10 to 15 years, so that the cost doesn’t have to be borrowed. “This is our fifth year and we’ve been paying as we go – about $66,000 this year and $100,000 in past years,” said McHenry.

Lee said that the Village takes pride in working with other municipalities in a variety of ways, including sharing equipment and manpower with the Town of Parma on

a daily basis. Last year, the Village worked with the Town and Hilton School District to build a municipal salt shed and this year a municipal fueling station was built. The salt shed was the first time the boards pitched in funding for a joint project, said Lee. The Village also looks to the Hilton School District to help with its mailings. In addition to providing a courier service to the Post Office, the District Print Shop folds and stuffs water and tax bills for the Village. “It would be really expensive if we had to buy this equipment that the school district already has,” said Pearce.

The Village of Hilton offices, located at 59 Henry St. in the Hilton Community Center, shares its space with several tenants helping to pay utility costs for the large building. Hilton-Parma Recreation, the community food shelf, senior center, a daycare and dance studio are housed there. The building is open and operational seven days a week.

In addition to the mayor, the Village employs 19 staff members – 13 DPW and six office staff. Over the past 15 years, three administrators have retired and weren’t replaced. An informal survey done by staff indicated that Hilton offers the most services with the least manpower.

“We’re lucky to have such a dedicated staff,” said McHenry. “The people we have are here to serve the public and really care about their jobs.”

Three statewide proposals on Nov. 4 ballots

by Kristina Gabalski Voters will be asked to decide on three statewide ballot proposals this Election Day, Tuesday, November 4.

Proposal One Revising State’s Redistricting Procedure This proposed amendment would reform the process of establishing new state legislative and Congressional district lines that the Constitution requires every ten years, beginning in 2020.

According to the NY State Board of Elections, if the proposal is approved, a redistricting commission will be established to determine lines for legislative and Congressional districts, subject to adoption of the commission’s plan by the Legislature and approval by the Governor.

Currently, the Legislature is the entity responsible for establishing these lines.

Included in the proposed amendment are qualifications for the members of the commission - eight of whom would be appointed by the four state legislative leaders and two of whom would be appointed by the first eight members of the commission.

The proposed amendment would also establish principles to be applied in creating districts and prohibits legislators and other elected officials from serving as commissioners.

The proposal also requires the commission to hold public hearings on proposed redistricting plans and provides for funding and bi-partisan staff to work for the commission.

Proposal Two Permitting Electronic Distribution of State Legislative Bills This proposed amendment would allow electronic distribution of a state legislative bill to satisfy the Constitutional requirement that a bill be printed and on the desks of state legislators at least three days before it is voted on by the Legislature.

Currently, this requirement can only be satisfied by the distribution of a printed copy of the bill.

The proposal establishes requirements for electronic distribution including legislators must be able to review the electronically-sent bill at their desks, that they must be able to print the bill if they choose, and that the bill

cannot be changed electronically without leaving a record of the changes.

Proposal Three - Smart Schools Bond Act of 2014 According to the NY State Board of Elections, this proposal authorizes the creation of state debt and the sale of state bonds up to the amount of $2 Billion ($2,000,000,000) to provide money for capital projects that would provide access to classroom technology and high speed internet connectivity to equalize opportunities for children to learn.

The types of projects covered by the proposal include: acquisition of interactive white boards, computer servers, and desktop, laptop and tablet computers; installation of high-speed broadband or wireless internet connectivity for schools and communities; construction, enhancement and modernization of educational facilities to accommodate pre-kindergarten programs and provide instructional space to replace transportable classroom units; and installation of high-tech security features in school buildings and on school campuses.

Interior Expressions shop owner named one of “25 Gifted Retailers”

by Kristina Gabalski Barbara Miller is not exaggerating when she says her business - Interior Expressions by Design - has everything to make your house a home.

The shop located at 1100 Long Pond Road (Suite 106) north of Ridge Road, is filled with an amazing selection of furniture, home decor, seasonal items, lighting - including candles - fashion accessories and gifts.

Barb has been at her current location for three years, but that short time belies her decades of experience in the retail industry.

“I managed The Apple Tree Gift Shop in Brockport,” Barb says, noting she has worked in retail for 35 years.

Barb did a little bit of everything for The Apple Tree - buying, displays, selling - and when it closed, she enjoyed being a grandma full time. But the retail world still beckoned.

Her years of experience had put her in touch with vendors and she also continued to be in touch with former customers.

With the support of her husband, Barb

ventured into her own business with Interior Expressions nine years ago.

“Once a retailer, always a retailer,” she says.

The business was first housed in the craft/antique co-op in Hilton. Barb started with one little booth and the business grew. Moving to her current location was “the next logical step,” she says.

Barb loves her Greece location in a small plaza just off busy Route 104. The plaza has lots of architectural charm and attractive landscaping - the perfect setting for the offerings of her shop.

The first impression when entering the store is one of cozy, country furnishings and decorative accessories. Closer inspection reveals there is something for almost every taste - from primitive to traditional to contemporary. The variety of merchandise is amazing - and captivating - from sofas to earrings and large wooden hutches to funky change purses.

“You have to have a mix to appeal to a lot of different tastes,” Barb says.

She recalls one customer who came in and at first glance, thought the store’s offerings were not to her taste. After brows-

ing, she changed her mind and went home with hundreds of dollars in merchandise.

Barb says new customers visit every day.

“The business has grown,” she says. “I’ve been blessed that way. A lot of businesses are struggling, especially in retail.”

She is particularly proud of her faux floral offerings which change to match the seasons and which are different from those found in chain craft stores. Also available are a wide range of seasonal merchandise and garden-related items.

The furniture Barb offers is all made in the USA - some by Amish craftsmen and upholstered pieces by Hallagan Fine Furniture, which has been manufacturing in nearby Newark, NY for more than 110 years.

Hallagan offers hundreds of fabric and frame choices including contemporary.

Barb explains her success is most likely due to making customer service a priority.

She welcomes every customer to the store and is always ready to offer friendly advice when it’s needed.

“It’s the rapport you build with the customer, making them feel special,” Barb says. “Every customer I have is special.

I’m grateful for every purchase.”

Customers seek her out from as far away as Buffalo, Syracuse, Elmira and Horseheads.

She also makes an effort to give back to the community, particularly during Small Business Saturday when 90 percent of her sales go to the Mission Share Outreach Center in Greece.

Her store is also getting some national attention via a trade publication. Barb and Interior Expressions by Design are featured in the November 2014 issue of Gifts and Decorative Accessories as one of the publication’s “25 Gifted Retailers 2014.”

“I’m really honored by the recognition,” Barb says.

Plan 2014 still under fire by some lakeshore groups

by Kristina Gabalski The Niagara-Orleans Regional Alliance (NORA) continues its fight against Plan 2014 for regulating Lake Ontario Water levels - fearing the lake would see more extremes in water levels and leading to an eroded shoreline during high water and parched marinas during low levels.

On September 25, NORA co-chairs Orleans County Legislator Lynne Johnson and Niagara County Legislator David Godfrey met with International Joint Commission (IJC) officials from the U.S. and Canada to again state their strong opposition to the proposal.

Also in September, the IJC submitted its conclusions to the governments of Canada and the U.S. regarding Plan 2014, asking both governments for views and concurrence on revising the IJC’s approval for regulating water levels and flows in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

The meeting attended

by Johnson and Godfrey on September 25, was arranged by Congressman Chris Collins and was attended by Collins, Gordon Walker, acting chairman, Canadian section; Dereth Glance, commissioner of the U.S. section; and Frank Bevacqua, public information officer, U.S. section.

“The IJC was not very happy with the outcome

because the Congressman told them in no uncertain terms - ‘This thing was wrong from the beginning and it’s going nowhere.

You did your job and now we will do ours, we are going to kill this in Washington once and for all,’ ” Johnson said.

Johnson and Godfrey traveled to Washington D.C. in August to meet with federal officials and state their opposition to the plan.

At that time, Godfrey told officials, “Our fear is hundreds of millions of dollars of valuable property will be lost from erosion, and sales tax revenues from our fishing and recreational boating industry will literally be swept away. The unendurable result is every taxpayer across our counties will pay the price with high taxes.”

In a continuing effort to bring facts to the decision makers in Washington as well as the people, Johnson and Godfrey say they have sent leaders numerous documents detailing objections from such sources as the U.S. Department of Transportation and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

In its letter to the IJC, the U.S. Department of Transportation states, “The DOT cannot support the proposed Plan. As a threshold matter, we question the IJC’s authority to change the current plan without reference to other

communications from the U.S. and Canadian governments ... the proposed adaptive management process raises concerns that the IJC may make changes to the regulation plan without interested users having an opportunity to participate in the process established by the Treaty for public comments.”

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation states in its letter, “The Plan 2014, in its present proposed form, will have significant negative impact on commercial navigation during periods of low water, which are expected to be more frequent in the future ...The Plan ... in an attempt to improve the wetlands ecosystem could bring about unintended consequences that affect other areas of the environment, such that the total negative impacts outweigh the benefits conferred to the wetlands.”

Legislators Godfrey and Johnson say they applaud Congressman Collins for his assistance in helping to set up meetings with the IJC. “He has been a strong supporter of NORA and our efforts to stop this absurdity,” Johnson said.

The IJC has stated that the ecosystem of Lake Ontario and the Upper St. Lawrence River has been unnaturally compressed and harmed by the current plan which has

been in place for more than 50 years.

“Plan 2014 helps restore plant diversity and habitat for fish and wildlife by allowing more natural variability in water levels while continuing to moderate extreme high and low levels,” the IJC said in its Summary of Benefits and Impacts of Plan 2014.

The old section of roof, supporting the steeple, needs to be reframed to match the slope of the new roof.” David added: “Bob Cornell and his crew have been great; the communication has also been great.

The second plywood-covered truss section of the roof is carefully lowered in place, guided by construction workers from Cornell Construction Design, a company based in Rochester. Owner Bob Cornell observed the work going on during the day. He commented: “I’m mostly concerned with the safety of the workers. There are a lot of people on that roof, demolition workers, construction workers, roofing people and people involved with the operation of the crane.”

A bit of Ogden Baptist Church building history Members of the congregation at Ogden Baptist Church on Washington Street have a lot of history of their church to recount. There were 13 original members who started Ogden Baptist Church May 21, 1819. The group was unable to support a full time minister or a church building, therefore they met several years in private dwellings, a log schoolhouse, or on more important occasions in empty barns. The first house of worship was built around 1824-25 near Ogden Center on land donated by Col. Eastman Colby. The first meeting house must not have been too satisfactory for in April 1832 they voted to hold meetings at the white house owned by Brother Ross near the schoolhouse on Colby Street until the present church building was constructed. The first meeting in the church building was May 23, 1833.

The church voted to incorporate in 1912, and in 1913 another extensive remodeling took place. Hardwood floors and the present stained glass windows and a center aisle were installed as features of the sanctuary. Sometime around 1927 the church switched from kerosene lamps to electricity.

The church needed to support the cross beams in the ceiling and during that time a telephone pole sprouted up in the sanctuary and stayed there until September 1949. In 1951-2 a Fellowship Hall with a stage was built replacing the back room. A study, kitchen and a bathroom were also added. In 1957, the bylaws were amended and we changed our name from “the First Baptist Church of Ogden” to the “Ogden Baptist Church.”

In 1958 the lighted cross, which was a memorial, was installed. Starting in March 1972, church services were held in Fellowship Hall because the ceiling of the sanctuary was found to be unsafe.

The new ceiling, with a beautiful chandelier given as a memorial gift, was installed in Mach 1973.

April 1982 was the biggest project of the year.

The floor was releveled, the walls and ceiling areas were spackled, replastered, and painted.

New steps were built across the front and south platform. The pews were rebuilt, painted and varnished. Carpeting was installed throughout the sanctuary with matching seat cushions and Baptistry curtains.

Greece Athena scored twice over an 11-minute span in the second half to defeat Churchville-Chili 2-0 in the Class A1 boys soccer semi-finals held in periodic rain showers at Hilton. The Saints entered the contest as the top seed in the class.

The teams played evenly in the first half and limited legitimate scoring opportunities. The Trojans sent one over the crossbar in the ninth minute and the Saints missed a glorious chance with a flurry in the 22nd minute that included a pair of corner kicks and a shot wide right off a corner by Lukas Fernandes to Dan Killion.

Just 2:55 into the second half, the Trojans broke the scoreless tie in a bullet shot into the upper left corner of the net from 25 yards out by junior Zach Koons.

The Saints turned up the pressure in the ensuing minutes and had one chance as Zach Picardo raced down the left sideline and had his shot glance off the top of the crossbar in the 50th minute.

Athena then made it 2-0 on a goal-line scramble with sophomore Lindeman Ryan credited with the tally as the ball barely rolled across the line.

Fernandes was in the middle of the final three scoring chances for the Saints as his corner kick was headed just over the crossbar by Cam Shipley in the 64th minute, his shot off a pass from Anastasios Strembenis was gobbled up by the Trojans goalkeeper in the 71st minute and he had his mini-breakaway thwarted with a little over a minute remaining when he dribbled the ball a little too far out in front.

The win marked the third of the year by Athena over the Saints, who did not allow a single goal over the period.

“Soccer is about match-ups and they are physical, they’re big and they come at you hard, and we’re technical,” Saints head coach John Mahoney said. “They won the 50-50 battles and, while I think we’re a better team technically, those guys come at you hard and that puts you on your back foot. All props to them.”

by Warren Kozireski Roberts Wesleyan continued their regular appearances on the East Coast Conference weekly awards list with four named in the week ending October 26.

Churchville-Chili grad Bella Mitrevski was named women’s soccer Offensive Player of the Week as she netted two goals in a 4-0 shutout over Malone. In ten games, Mitrevski has 28 points on 12 goals and four assists ranking second in the conference in points and goals.

In volleyball, junior Kendall Havener had 48 kills in four matches and 15 sets and was named Player of the Week. She added nine blocks with a .477 hitting percentage and ranks fifth in the conference in total blocks, third in solo blocks and ninth in kills.

Freshman Courtney Taylor had 46 kills over the same 15 sets and was named Rookie of the Week in volleyball.

She ranks second on the Redhawks with 249 kills this season.

And senior Rachel Prutsman was named Runner of the Week in cross country after she finished sixth in the Eastern Michigan University 5k in 17:57.1.

Women’s soccer wraps up their season Nov. 2 against NYIT at home, cross country is hosting the ECC championships Nov. 8 and volleyball, vying for the fourth and final conference playoff berth, finishes at NYIT and Long Island University Nov. 8-9.

Kendall P.O. to see cuts in services

by Kristina Gabalski Kendall residents and community leaders continue to question the U.S. Postal Service’s POST Plan implementation decision which will result in the loss of a full-time post master at the Kendall Post Office.

Orleans County Legislator and Kendall resident Ken DeRoller says the community was notified on August 1, 2014 of the implementation decision, just one day after a well-attended community meeting during which residents made it clear to a local operations manager for the USPS, that they did not want to lose their post master, Ann Piazza.

“What can we do as a community so we can keep Ann?” Kendall Supervisor Tony Cammarata asked at the July 31 meeting.

The USPS operations manager said all comments would be taken into consideration before a decision was made, but postal customers received that decision just a day later, on August 1, in a letter written by Michael T. Weimer, WNY District POST Plan Coordinator.

“I’ve never seen such a turn-around,” DeRoller says.

According to the August 1 decision, under the POST Plan, the Kendall Post Office will provide six hours of window service each weekday. Current Saturday window service hours will not be reduced and access to delivery receptacles will not change as a result of POST Plan realignment of weekday window service hours.

The Postal Service will announce the date of implementation and operational hours of the office at a later date.

DeRoller says he has created a list of five priority items/ concerns which he believes the Postal Service should consider to right-size the Kendall Post Office.

“As the overall USPS customer retail visits continue to drop - 27 percent since 2005 - the Kendall Post Office continued to increase its overall revenue by 42 percent over the last two years. This revenue increase should be reflected in a Level 18 Post Office with full post master service,” DeRoller argues.

The fact the Morton Post Office remains open and a financial drain also concerns DeRoller. Morton is 2.9 miles away from Kendall and “remains open two hours a day at an estimated $6600/year lease cost plus 500 hours/year retail operational cost, plus overhead,” he explains and adds the Morton PO is under the oversight of the Hamlin Post Office which is 7.3 miles away.

The Morton Post Office recently received outside PO boxes with new handicapped access to the boxes, but not the service window, he says.

DeRoller says he feels instead of cutting Kendall’s fulltime post master, better efficiencies could be created by consolidating or merging Morton and Kendall Post Offices. Morton could possibly keep its zip code with such a move, DeRoller says.

“They don’t understand the market,” he notes of the Postal Service, “they’re not going about it (cutting costs) correctly.

They’re not really saving money and are not going to be competitive much longer.”

He says Kendall is not alone in its frustration as “Congress has said (to the Postal Service) you will not close any post offices.”

“We’re not giving up,” DeRoller explains.

“I’ve been in touch with Congressman Chris Collins,” and adds that many residents have asked him what is going on at the Post Office.

DeRoller hopes concerned residents will become engaged in an effort to ensure that the Kendall Post Office retains its post master.
