Sweden assessment notices sent out April 1 The Town of Sweden assessor sent out 4,114 assessment notices on April 1. Most residential property owners will see an assessment increase of about 16%; the only type of property not seeing an increase is tillable agricultural land. An increase in assessment does not necessarily mean a property tax increase. If all taxable properties rise by about the same percentage, each property’s share of the community’s tax burden remains about the same. It is only an increase in the tax levy that would then create an increase in an individual’s taxes. The first taxing authority to use the new assessments is the school district; that tax bill comes out in September. Next will be the county, town, and fire district tax bills in January 2023. The last taxing authority to use the new assessment roll is the Village of Brockport in June 2023. The upcoming Village of Brockport tax bill will not make use of the new assessments. This is because the new assessment roll is not finalized until July 1 each year, after the Village’s budget has been adopted and tax levy set. Those property owners who do not believe they can sell their home at the new value may make an appointment with the Assessor (be sure to have an appraisal, market analysis, or home inspection in hand) or schedule a walk-through. Grievance Day will be held Tuesday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sweden Town Park Lodge, 4761 Redman Road. Appointments are recommended. Call 637-8683 for more information or an appointment. Members of the Hilton DPW joined Village officials for a ribbon cutting for six new electric vehicle charging stations at Hovey Street.
New EV charging stations installed in Hilton Six new electric vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed at Hovey Street in the village of Hilton. The chargers are available for residents and visitors and help support access to local amenities and clean transportation choices. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday, March 9. Mayor Joe Lee commented, “Hilton is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We want to do our part to have a greener community for years to come by adding this valuable service available to everyone.” “We are excited to provide this new service as more of our community members choose EVs,” said Village of Hilton Vice Mayor Andrew Fowler. “Public charging infrastructure is vital to our renters who may not be able to charge as easily at home and to the visitors we encourage to drive over to Hilton and explore our beautiful village as they power up.” The new charging stations were made possible by support from New York State’s Charge Ready NY program, administered by the New York State Energy Research
and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Mayor Joe Lee, Village Manager Shari Wilson Pearce, and Trustees Larry Speer, Shannon Zabelny, Andy Fowler, and Sherry Farrell as well as Hilton DPW staff were instrumental in the implementation of this project. The Village of Hilton had previously completed five Clean Energy Action Items to become a Clean Energy Community. The addition of the six charging stations should bring the Village to a total of six Action Items completed. This effort complements New York State’s nation-leading climate and clean energy goals as outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act to lower greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent by 2050, lowering emissions from vehicles and improving access to charging stations. New York State has the goal of amplifying the number of charging stations statewide to 50,000 by 2025 and that all new passenger cars and trucks sold be zero emissions by 2035. Brockport High School’s “Cereal for Ukraine” collection was a great success with 1,100 boxes donated. A sticker that read in Ukrainian, “We are thinking of you, from Brockport HS, Brockport, NY,” was placed on each box. Before packing up the donations, including a donation from members of the Brockport Police Department (left), students arranged the boxes in a domino line that wound through the hall and school cafeteria and took a video as they fell.
