The Salvation Army has an urgent need for volunteer bell ringers The Salvation Army of Greater Rochester has officially kicked off its 2023 Red Kettle Campaign with close to 50 kettles appearing at retailers across Monroe County. The grand effort of this holiday tradition is much larger than meets the eye; nearly 6,000 volunteer hours go into keeping these kettles active through December 23. There is an urgent, community-wide need for more volunteer red kettle ringers. Only 40% of the necessary positions have been filled as of this writing, meaning at least 300 more volunteers are needed to ring for two-hour shifts over the coming weeks. Without the support of new or returning ringers, many kettles are left empty and in the corner of retail entrances including Greece Ridge Mall, Hobby Lobby, Tops Friendly Markets and JCPenney. The result could negatively impact the work the Rochester Salvation Army does for those in need. All Red Kettle donations stay local to help provide shelter, support

services, and emergency items to Monroe County families and individuals throughout the upcoming year. “As the need for Salvation Army assistance continues to increase due to economic hardships, so has the need for bell ringing volunteers,” said Major Rick Starkey of The Salvation Army. “Just one shift makes a significant difference in each day’s donation total.” Volunteers of all ages can ring at a red kettle as individuals or in small groups. They’re encouraged to sing carols, play instruments, or simply ring the provided red bell. Locations, dates and open timeslots can be found at registertoring.com or by calling 585-754-9918. Oak Orchard Health recognized for quality achievements

Students at Hilton’s Quest Elementary School recently enjoyed a visit from Perry Ground, a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation. Ground has been telling stories for more than 25 years to educate people about the culture, beliefs, and history of the Haudenosaunee (sometimes known as Iroquois) Confederacy. Oak Orchard Health (OOH) was awarded the Community Health Quality Recognition (CHQR) Badges for Health IT and Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA). CHQR badges recognize Health Centers that have made notable achievements in the areas of access, quality, health equity, health information technology, social risk factors screening, and COVID-19 public health emergency response using Uniform Data System (UDS) from the most recent reporting period. “We’re excited to receive this recognition, especially the Health IT badge. With a vast base of over 30,000 patients in rural areas, technology helps us keep our patients healthy. Whether it’s by using our electronic medical records system or our patient portal, our providers and patients have access to information that helps Oak Orchard diagnose and treat our patients efficiently,” said Karen Kinter, CEO, Oak Orchard Health. Oak Orchard Health was awarded the Health IT badge because it met all the following criteria: •Adopted an electronic health record (EHR) system. •Offered telehealth services. •Exchanged clinical information online with key providers’ health care settings. •Engaged patients through health IT. •Collected data on patient social risk factors. “Oak Orchard has been staying at the forefront of technology to document medical information efficiently and improve our access to patients. We encourage our patients to use the

patient portal because they will have access to their medical information, be able to ask questions of their medical providers, and request medication refills. Telehealth has been a breakthrough for our patients because of the challenges many have with transportation and other barriers that keep them from coming into the health centers. Now they can receive medical or behavioral health care from home using their telephone, tablet, or computer,” said Jason Kuder, Chief Information Officer, Oak Orchard Health. Oak Orchard Health has been a certified Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) since 2012. This certification means patients can count on high-quality health care delivered with an emphasis on care coordination and communication. The focus is on comprehensive care which is a team effort. That team includes physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses, nutritionists, educators, and care coordinators. The Oak Oarchard Care Team’s goal is to provide each patient with the best care uniquely suited to his or her specific needs. Learn more about Oak Orchard Health at www. oakorchardhealth.org. Patricia Ann Barone Patricia Ann Barone, of Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 82 on October 25, 2023. Born on December 11, 1940, to her late parents Victoria and Michaelangelo Tremiti, she was predeceased by the love of her life and husband, Donald “Dick” Barone, and their infant son, Patrick, her brothers Frederick and Luciano Tremiti, and daughterin-law Annmarie Sullivan Barone. Patricia is survived by her 4 loving children: Nancy Powers, Roselynn (Steve) Crist, Joseph Barone, and Victoria (David) Graham. She will be dearly missed by her 10 grandchildren: Danielle (Greg) Vaeth, Jillian (Patrick Nelson) Powers, Kenneth (Kate) Crist, Carolanne (Josh) Saginario, Alexander Barone, Olivia Barone, Nicholas Graham, Erin (Ryan) Townsend, Stacey (Justin) Radford, and Randi (Ryan Tower) Scholes. Patricia was also blessed with 13 greatgrandchildren: Remington and Sloane Nelson, Arya and Lincoln Crist, Quinn and Joelle Saginario, Jayden, RJ, and Max Townsend, Eleanora, Etta, and Elijah Radford, and Adella Dukes. Patricia is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was honored and blessed to be the Godmother to Annmarie Lent and Lisa Tremiti. Patricia was the final surviving parent to her children, the sole surviving child of her parents, the last living sister-in-law, and the ultimate Aunt of her generation. We mourn the loss of the Matriarch of our Family. Known as Pat or Patty was vibrant, feisty, adventurous, and renowned for her zest for life, her profound connection with God, our Lord and Savior, and her deep love for family. As a survivor of two near-death experiences, this brought her even closer to God and confirmed she would be blessed to be with God forever in Eternal Life! Patty was very faithful, providing wisdom to her family, full of surprises and beautiful smiles. She had a passion for music and singing; she would dance at the drop of a hat. She loved horses and spent much of her adult life riding and caring for them. If she challenged you to a game of pool, you quickly learned she was quite the shark. She loved to fish, be near water, and cared for her ducks on the Erie Canal. Pat had an inherited strong will with a vibrant independent spirit that led her through many chapters in her full life from a youth group ministry counselor to a bus driver brightening up the days of her students. She was driven to obtain her Associates Degree, earned her Real Estate Broker license, owned Rainbow’s End storefront, and in the early 1980s was the owner/landlord of the building on Main St in Naples, NY that once housed the US Post office with several small businesses and apartments until she retired in 2006. She was committed to creating community wherever she could. December 11th, 2023, would have been Patricia’s 83rd birthday, and the family has chosen this day to be her Celebration of Life. Pat’s wishes were for a Memorial Catholic mass at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Greece at 10:30 a.m. Following the mass, Pat’s ashes will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. In Pat’s own words: “Wear Bright colors for I am happy to be Home in Heaven. Gather with Song and Dance, for I will be doing that in Heaven.” In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the floor where Patricia’s quality care was given. Jewish Senior Life Foundation (check payable to), In memory of Patricia Barone (memo), 2021 Winton Rd. South, Rochester, NY 14618 May Patricia Ann Barone’s soul rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a source of comfort and strength for all who knew and loved her.

Holiday Craft and Vendor Fair supports local rescue efforts for homeless pets by Tami Raco Ogden resident Connie Marianetti, founder of Crafting for a Cause, began organizing local crafters who have a heart for the homeless pet population in the community earlier this year. “It’s been heartbreaking to see the number of homeless cats since Covid and the burden it is putting on our local rescues,” said Marianetti.

All six of these kittens are now in loving homes thanks to the combined efforts of Crafting for a Cause members and area pet rescue organizations. Provided photos.

To help, the crafters from Crafting for a Cause have been donating items and proceeds to support those who help the homeless pet community. “The proceeds have been helping various rescue efforts and the Hamlin Pet Food Pantry,” she said. On Sunday, December 10, they are hosting a Holiday Craft and Vendor Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Churchville Moose Lodge, 5709 Chili Riga Center Road. In addition to the proceeds supporting local efforts to help local homeless pets there will also be a food drive accepting non perishable food and personal care items for the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf. All are welcome to stop by for fun, food, raffles and shopping. To learn more about this grassroots group helping to lighten the local homeless pet community, their next meeting is January 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ogden Farmers’ Library and is open to the public.

Village Elementary and Merton Williams students now eligible for free meals The Hilton Central School District announced all students enrolled at Village Elementary School and Merton Williams Middle School are able to receive free breakfast and lunch at school as of December 1, 2023. The free meals are a result of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) expanding access to the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), coupled with additional funding by New York State. CEP allows eligible schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs to offer school meals at no charge to all students. Free meals through CEP are approved for Village Elementary School and Merton Williams Middle School through June 30, 2024. No further action is required for families to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch daily. Meal prices automatically changed on December 1. Any

meal charges prior to this date must still be paid in full. Free meals under CEP apply only to a complete breakfast and/or lunch. A complete lunch consists of at least three of the five food components offered (milk, grain, protein, fruit, and vegetable). A la carte items must still be paid for. “We are excited to provide free meals to all students at Village Elementary School and Merton Williams Middle School, with hopes of adding more schools in the future,” said Scott Ziobrowski, Hilton Central School District Food Service Director. “Research shows students perform better in school when they have access to a healthy breakfast and lunch. Offering free meals also decreases food insecurity and improves the physical and mental health of students.” For more information, please visit https://www. hilton.k12.ny.us/page/food-service. and engaging environment for our students to grow and succeed. Her principled leadership has helped to move the district forward.” Prior to becoming superintendent, Orologio served as the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Instruction since 2005. She also served as Dr. Lori Orologio principal in the Greece Central School District and elementary school principal in the Attica Central School District. She began her career in 1984 as a teacher in the Perry Central School District. The Churchville-Chili School Board has appointed Monroe 2 – Orleans BOCES District Superintendent Jo Anne L. Antonacci as search consultant. A timeline for the search for a new superintendent will be forthcoming from District Superintendent Antonacci with the intention to have a new superintendent in place on July 1, 2024. The winter high school sports season began with the Thanksgiving holiday, so here is what we can expect from the local hockey teams: Churchville-Chili The Saints set a program record with 17 wins and saw their season end with a loss to Webster-Schroeder 3-1 in Class B finals. It marked the fourth time the team has lost in the finals, one win short of their first Section V championship. They hope this is the year as they are led by junior Parker Farnham, who led Section V in scoring last season with 50 points and was second with 28 goals. The junior was named MCPSAC’s Division 2 Player of the Year in 2022-23. “We are looking for continued scoring power from him,” Churchville-Chili 17-year head coach Brian Young said. Other key players for the season include senior forward Jesse Prue, who tallied ten points in 20 games last season, with the defense anchored by senior Andrew Buxton. Sophomore forward Ben Kanellis is among those who will be given the opportunity to make up for some of the offense lost from last season’s squad. “Strong work ethic and hockey fundamentals will lead to a successful season,” Young said. “We have incredible depth that we have not had in years! Expect to run three to four lines consistently down the stretch.” The Saints will again compete in Class B and begin with road games with Brighton and Williamsville South before their home opener December 5 against Fairport. Hilton The Cadets began last season with 16 new players and it showed as they finished 2022-23 with an 811-1 record, were the #11 seed, and lost in the first round of the Section V playoffs. Fast forward to this season and the Cadets return all but one player from last year and have added a few key components. Senior forward and captain Tanner Smith returns as last year’s leading scorer with 18 points. Senior forward Luke Manley is one of two assistant captains and is joined up front by plenty of depth in freshman Casey Hanrahan, who finished second on the squad with 17 points as an eighth-grader, sophomore Hunter Huttemann – third with 14 points – as well as juniors Aiden Kennedy and Andrew Paolini.

Add in sophomore transfer forward Cam Stewart, who was the second leading scorer for Aquinas last season, and you have two solid scoring lines. Goaltender and assistant captain Aiden Hill returns after being a First Team All-County Selection last year. The blueline is loaded with experienced juniors in Josh Anstett, Phil Fiorella, Patrick Wiza, and Trent Letcher as well as sophomore Jack Palmer. “We had 16 new players last season, and all have done an outstanding job in the offseason,” Hilton head coach Chris Monfilletto said. “We are excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity it brings.” The Cadets have an early Buffalo-area trip to play Starpoint and West Seneca West the first weekend in December before an early December 5 measuring stick against Division I foe Pittsford, who finished second in the division and won the Section V championship last season. Portside (Brockport and Spencerport) The Royals finished 8-10-2 in 2022-23 before falling to Gates-Chili in the first round of the playoffs, but will return four key seniors in captains Frank Grad and Sal Balbi with alternate captains Zachary Neu and Kevin Eckard. Grad led the team last season with 13 goals and 23 points while Balbi was second with ten goals and 20 points. Defenseman Neu and forward Eckard combined for 13 points with both playing every game. They are among 12 returning players and the squad welcomes ten additions. Players to watch are sophomore forward Zachary Haines, second on the team with 13 assists as a freshman, freshman forward Andrew Lamberton, eighth-grade forward Wyatt Pence and junior goaltenders Dan Kucmerowski and Liam Bischoping, who combined for eight wins and 488 saves last year. “We have a relatively young group this year. One eighth, five freshmen, seven sophomores, eight juniors and four seniors,” Portside head coach William McGrath said. “We have a great group of returning players supplemented by the addition of our 10 new players. The group has equity built from playing together in our JV program. This will be a fun year of development.” The team will again compete in Class A while the schedule features a two-day holiday tournament in Batavia in late December.

Westside News East and West Editions - December 3, 2023 11

New offerings for family caregivers using free NYS online support portal The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) recently announced several new offerings for subscribers of New York’s Caregiving Portal – a powerful resource that is available free of charge for any person in New York State providing unpaid caregiving supports to a family member or friend. New offerings include sitewide Spanish language translations, community chat rooms, mental health content, and tools to help caregivers of children with complex needs. The New York Caregiving Portal is made possible through a partnership of NYSOFA, the Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY), and Trualta, which developed and operates the portal. Funding support was provided in the Fiscal Year 2024 state budget. The New York Caregiving Portal helps families build skills to manage care at home for loved ones of any age. It also connects to local resources and support services by delivering personalized education, training, and information links. New Yorkers can access the service at

https://newyork-caregivers.com. To create a free user account, select “Sign Up.” Once registered, caregivers can select personalized training and track their progress on topics like self-care, stroke recovery, dementia care, medication management, and more. Users can log-in from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. Some new highlights include: •Site-wide Spanish translations. While audio and PDF translations were previously available throughout the platform, a new site-wide toggle provides a more inclusive experience for Spanish speakers. •Community Chat Rooms. The portal now offers topic and condition-specific chat rooms, moderated by Trualta, where caregivers can post tips, success stories, and offers of encouragement to others in similar situations. Each chat room centers on high-level learning topics, such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia, Depression and Anxiety, Heart Health, Parkinson’s, Caring for Kids, LGBTQ+ Support and more.

•New Mental Health Content, including Depression and Bipolar Disorder Care, Anxiety & PTSD Care, Mental Health 101. Each new toolkit builds caregiver knowledge and strength in disproving mental health myths, building a strong support network, and becoming more aware of how to care for one’s own mental health when providing care for others. •Caring for Kids. Parents and guardians of children with complex needs – including grandparents who are “kinship caregivers” – now have content to help them manage stress, confidently navigate through school and health care systems, advocate for the child’s needs, establish necessary community relationships, and build resiliency. •Virtual Support Groups: Trualta’s online support groups bring together caregivers and a Trualta facilitator for engaging discussions about caregiving experiences, tips, and challenges. The small groups meet weekly and are a judgment-free zone with time for everyone to share.

There are an estimated 4.1 million caregivers in New York State who provide 2.68 billion hours of unpaid care. Sixty-one percent worry about caring for a loved one and 70 percent reported at least one mental health symptom during the pandemic. The caregiving portal teaches critical skills to reduce caregiver stress levels and increase confidence in one’s caregiving abilities. NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen said, “New York’s Caregiving Portal is providing even more ways for caregivers to connect with one another, learn evidence-based skills, relieve personal stress, and improve quality of life when navigating the complexities of caregiving for a loved one of any age. Nobody should have to go through the caregiving process alone. New York’s Caregiving Portal provides tools and information to help validate the caregiver experience, connect caregivers with support resources, and build confidence in day-to-day tasks and decision-making to help care for a loved one at home.” Provided information

Rochester Accessible Adventures receives two-year funding support

This is a photo from RAA’s Inclusion Partnership work with NYS DEC Region 8 which included an Inclusive Fishing event as a way to intentionally connect people living with a disability to the accessible amenities like this fishing dock that are on DEC lands.

Rochester Accessible Adventures (RAA) has received two-year funding support from the REI Cooperative Action Fund for its work in promoting and connecting people with disabilities in the outdoors. Eighty percent of health and wellness takes place outside of medical offices – and these are often the very spaces that have not been accessible to or inclusive of people living with a disability. Without intentional planning in outdoors spaces like municipal and county parks, campgrounds, and trails, this often results in a person with a disability being left on a dock, turning around at the end of the sidewalk, or just staying home while the rest of the family goes out. “Rochester Accessible Adventures is intent on creating a culture of inclusion in the outdoors, and the support from the REI Cooperative Action Fund provides a significant boost to the development of our next plans,” stated Anita O’Brien, RAA Executive Director. “The benefits of participation in outdoor recreation and leisure are well-documented, and we must ensure people living with a disability have equitable access to areas and programs designed for human engagement. We are gathering regional collaborators and partners that will enable us to push our preliminary impact to a broad, dynamic level.” Rochester Accessible Adventures has been working in the outdoor and tourism industries since its formation in 2015, providing consultative solutions to small businesses

and groups like Erie Canal Boat Company, Genesee Valley Audubon Society and Genesee Land Trust, municipalities like Victor Parks and Recreation and Perinton Recreation & Parks, as well as regional and statewide entities like the Village of Brockport, NYS DEC, On the Canals, and Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. By bolstering the ability of these entities to provide their services in a manner that directly and clearly expects and invites people with disabilities to participate in the outdoors, RAA’s work has resulted in dramatic increase in local, regional, and statewide destination travel and outdoor recreation by people with disabilities. RAA is thrilled to continue bringing much-needed attention to the outdoor arena and is excited to invite the community to join them. Organizations, community groups, businesses, individuals, and inclusion allies who are interested in supporting and joining in RAA’s 2024 work towards equitable access in the outdoors are encouraged to contact RAA directly at RAA@RochesterAccessibleAdventures.org or through its website contact form. The REI Cooperative Action Fund is a community-supported public charity bringing together the collective strength of the community to support organizations that are improving the well-being of all people through time outside. Multiphase project to enhance Medina’s connection to the Erie Canal On November 17, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and New York State Canal Corporation announced the beginning of a multiphase effort to enhance the Village of Medina’s connection to the Erie Canal through the Reimagine the Canals initiative. In partnership with local municipal and philanthropic leaders, as well as assistance from regional educational, civic, and cultural institutions, NYPA and the Canal Corporation are pursuing plans to improve the connectivity and access to the canal waterfront and adjacent Erie Canalway Trail through the village. In addition, a series of enhancements through safety upgrades along the trail, new boater and trail amenities, and curated public art installations will encourage boaters, trail users, and other visitors to experience and enjoy the Orleans County community’s canalside business district. “Our efforts in Medina reflect the goals of the Reimagine the Canals initiative – we are working collaboratively with local stakeholders to enhance and reenergize the Erie Canal so that it remains a vibrant driver of economic activity for decades to come,” said New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll. “The initial art sculpture unveiled today, and the preliminary ideas being considered to improve the village’s connection to the canal, underscore NYPA and the Canal Corporation’s commitment to leveraging canal infrastructure as a way to encourage year-round visitation to our historic communities.”

The preliminary scope of the multiphase project includes: •Rehabilitation of the Erie Canal’s northern concrete “highwall” (aqueduct that carries the Erie Canal over Oak Orchard Creek in the village), including safety improvements and increased viewing access of Medina Falls •Rehabilitation of the Erie Canalway Trail & Empire State Trail from the Horan Road bridge to the Bates Road bridge, leveraging a $411,495 Federal TAP Grant •A $2.654 million grant secured from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation (RCWJF), through the Rochester Area Community Foundation (RACF), poised to establish a vibrant public waterfront park that seamlessly links the gateways at the Medina Lift Bridge and Horan Road bridge to downtown Medina in an accessible loop designed to unify the community around the Erie Canal. Designed by City Architects of New York City, the initiative places a premium on recreational amenities for boaters and trail users, promoting a dynamic public space and enhancing the quality of life for residents. •An Art Triennial event representing Western New York with support of local municipal leaders, the RCWJF, NYS Council on the Arts, and institutional partners from Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery and the Buffalo AKG. New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “For generations, Medina thrived as a canal port exporting sandstone to

By initiating the preliminary design work that will guide future projects that aim to improve and rehabilitate our infrastructure, the Canal Corporation is demonstrating its commitment to Medina, and we are building upon a great foundation already laid by the community.” Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation Director of Parks & Trails Initiative JJ Tighe said, “The new waterfront promenade will enhance the quality of life for Medina residents and neighboring communities by providing a key connection along the Erie Canal and Empire State Trail, while creating a recreational loop that strings together improved park space and other recreational opportunities. These enhancements provide an exciting opportunity to grow and invigorate tourism and the local economy in Medina and will kick off the next 100 years of the Erie Canal as a recreational asset for communities across the State of New York.” For the initial public art installation, NYPA and the Canal Corporation brought together students from the Medina High School art program and graduate students from the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Architecture and Planning in a collaborative design effort that allowed young individuals within the community to actively engage in defining the key elements of this new public art piece. Thanks to a partnership with the Medina Lions Club, the Sydney Gross Memorial was unveiled November 17 during a public reception at Lions Park along the Erie Canal. The memorial is an in-

teractive sculpture composed of 23 precast concrete modules arranged in clusters that create a furniture setting. The arrangement is designed for recreation, reflection, and relaxation for anyone traveling on the canal or trail or as a local resident enjoying the canalside park. The memorial was inspired by and named for Sydney Gross, a UB School of Architecture and Planning student who passed away after a car accident in July 2009. The memorial is the first work of public art to be installed in Medina. New York State Canal Recreationway Commissioner and Orleans County resident Ken DeRoller said, “The New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation’s Reimagine the Canals initiative continues to expand opportunities to promote and support outdoor recreation and investment not only here in Orleans County, but also across the entire Canal corridor. As communities put together their Local Waterfront Revitalization Plans, which Medina has successfully done, the possibilities are truly endless as we collectively work to ensure the canal waterway continues to support our local economies.” Planning and design work will continue throughout 2024 with a formal construction schedule to be determined after all approvals are secured with an aim to have an announcement in conjunction with the Erie Canal’s bicentennial in 2025. In addition, the recurring Art Triennial will launch in 2025. Through the Reimagine the Canals initiative, the New York Power Authority committed $300 million to revitalize the Erie Canal corridor as a tourism and recreation destination while simultaneously boosting economic development and improving the resiliency of canalside communities.
