Brockport teacher witnesses Abby Wambach’s final game Brockport Oliver Middle School teacher Kathleen Boughton watched Abby Wambach’s final U.S. Women’s National Team game from a suite inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on December 16. Boughton, a physical education teacher at Brockport Oliver Middle School, coached Wambach in both basketball and soccer at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women. Wambach credits Boughton for giving her “tough love” and helping her to learn the value of respect. After a field dedication in her honor at Mercy last year, Wambach said, “I’ve had a lot of coaches in my life, a lot of amazing soccer-mind coaches in my life. There is no better motivator that I’ve ever been coached by than Kathy.” Boughton feels proud to have played a role in coaching America’s all-time leading scorer. “I never thought I’d be the coach of the number one soccer player in the world,” said Boughton. Wambach invited Boughton to join her closest friends and family members to watch her final game against China in the suite provided by U.S. Soccer. Boughton said the most special part of the trip was reuniting with Wambach’s college coach, Becky Burleigh, from the University of Florida. “When you see a player grow, it’s nice to be able to converse about it,” said Boughton. Following the game, Boughton attended Wambach’s post-game party at the House of Blues, where she met Mia Hamm, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Brandi Chastain and several other iconic soccer players. Opinion/Comments Spencerport FD elects 2016 officers The Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association is pleased to announce their slate of officers for 2016. Elections took place on Thursday, December 3 and votes were cast for the following. Patrick O’Hara, Fire Chief; Joseph Barretta, Deputy Fire Chief; Tom Clark and Mitch Flagg, Assistant Fire Chiefs; Bill Hallihan, Don Wood and Jorge Magin, Captains; Jake Bromage, TJ Sercu and Richard Timothy Magin, Lieutenants. President Cooper Harrington will lead the Board of Directors with assistance by Vice Presidents Jason Rampello and Adrian DeJesus. Directors newly elected include Tim Stevely, Christian Geer and Sara Grapensteter. William Jones was appointed Treasurer and Stephen Cusenz remains Secretary to the Board of Directors. The Association would like to thank Chief Doug Case
for his many years as a line officer and the last three as Fire Chief. Also, a heartfelt thanks to Joseph Muniz for his leadership as President for the last year and as a member of the board for several years prior. In the Department’s 125 years of dedicated, volunteer service to the community, only two members have held the position of both Fire Chief and President; Don Magin being the first and Joe Muniz the second, following in his father’s footsteps (Salvador Muniz) as past President. As always, we’re very thankful to the community as well for their continued support. We’re here for you and appreciate your being there for us.

Sixteen to 39 percent of the students enrolled in the courses take the AP exams each year, with the district covering the cost of the exam. In 2015, more than 3,800 colleges and universities around the world received AP scores for college credit, advanced placement and/or consideration in the admission process, with many colleges and universities in the U.S. offering credit in one or more subjects for qualifying AP scores. Kendall Central Schools placed on the College Board’s AP District Honor Roll Kendall Central Schools (KCS) recently qualified as one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada for placement on the College Board’s Sixth Annual AP® District Honor Roll. The district received this honor for increasing access to AP courses while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams since 2013. Placement on the Sixth Annual Honor Roll indicates that a district successfully identifies motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for the opportunity of AP. “I am so pleased and proud of our students and staff for being recognized with this honor,” said Julie Christensen, school superintendent. “Kendall is one of the few districts recognized in NYS. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (never known to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh, star of the sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my Heart, to succor me in my necessity. (Make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this prayer into your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it, and it will be granted to you.

where they will participate in engaging and creative activities tailored to each grade level. At the end of each day, parents can explore the library with their children and check out books to bring home. The test scores of low income, at-risk youth improved significantly in both reading and mathematics after they participated in after-school programs, according to a 2006 analysis of 35 studies on out-of-school programs. The Friends of the Gates Public Library, a volunteer organization that supports library programs and services, is currently raising funds to make this program possible. Donut Eating Contest wins International Award by Kristina Gabalski The first-ever Donut Eating Contest held during the 2015 Orleans County 4-H Fair was recognized recently by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE), which awarded the competition first place (fairs under 100,000 in attendance division) in the Competitive Exhibits (participatory contest) category of its annual contest program. Officials at Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension say they are pleased with the international attention. “This is the first time our fair has been recognized with an IAFE award and we’re all very excited,” says Robert Batt, Orleans County 4-H Youth Development Educator. The award was presented at the IAFE Convention in Las Vegas Nov. 29-Dec. 2. Brandon Johnson traveled to the convention to accept the award and to represent the Orleans Fair, Batt says. Additionally, Johnson looked for exciting new entertainment possibilities to bring to the Orleans County 4-H Fair. “Our entry will be put on a flash drive and shared along with all other winners with all member fairs,” he explains.
The contest program awards, “display the level of professionalism we strive to uphold in the industry,” the IAFE website states. IAFE represents more than 1,000 fairs around the world. “These awards allow our fair members to not only compete for top honors in the respective division, contest, and categories, but also give fair representatives the opportunity to network. Having the ability to learn from one another in the fair industry is priceless,” the IAFE website continues. The Orleans County 4-H Fair Donut Eating Contest was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts and featured heats involving three participants at a time going head to head with a local law enforcement officer from the Orleans County Sheriff ’s Department to see who could consume the most donuts during a set period of time. The contest garnered rave reviews from participants and audience members alike. “Many people have already commented that they plan to participate again next year and we have a small number of sheriff ’s deputies working on plans and strategies for next year,” Orleans County Fair officials stated in their entry for the award.

National award winning local angler hopes for expanded fishing derby A local angler, Keith Compton of Brockport, qualified for an In-Fisherman Master Angler Award for 2013. In-Fisherman, the magazine, began publication in 1975 with the Master Angler program being added in 1977. In-Fisherman, also a nationally syndicated television program, is the leading authority on freshwater fishing. The Master Angler program has two categories for entries, kept and catch and release. The winning entries for 2013 are listed in the July 2014 issue of In-Fisherman magazine and on-line at in-fisherman. com. Mr. Compton, a lifelong angler, entered a 43” Asian carp to earn his catch and release award. This award was one out of just over six-hundred awarded nationwide for 2013. He landed the trophy near the Park Street Bridge where he used corn for bait. Mr. Compton fishes the canal often and said, “For a little strip of water, that’s empty half the year, it’s quite the ecosys-

The first-ever donut eating contest was held at this year’s Orleans County 4-H Fair, July 27-Aug. 1. Two members of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department took on donut eating “amateurs” in two rounds to see who could eat the most of six donuts. Here, Orleans County Deputy Sheriff Jeff Cole (in sunglasses), competes in the first round. He lost out to the other contestants who received t-shirts for their efforts. Deputy Cole joked that he lost because he prefers eating bagels. Looking on is Zachary Moore, the 2014 Orleans County 4-H Fair Duke. Orleans County Sheriff’s Department investigator Ken Strickland participated in the second round and also lost out to the “amateur” contestants. Donuts were donated by Dunkin Donuts. K. Riga Church welcomes new pastor
030 8/05
The First Congregational Church of Riga welcomes Susan Lancaster Garofalo as its new pastor. To celebrate this event, the church will hold an open house on Saturday, January 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 7057 Chili-Riga Center Road. This will provide everyone in the community to get to know Pastor Susan. Having grown up in Irondequoit, Pastor Susan studied music education at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music, where she majored in piano. Following her studies, she joined the workforce and began building a long, successful sales career that continues today. Finishing her undergraduate degree was important to Pastor Susan. She began researching degree programs that would allow her to consolidate her music education studies with her professional experience. Her research paid off. After two years of coursework, Pastor Susan received her undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After much discernment, Pastor Susan began her post-graduate studies at Northeastern Seminary, earning her Master of Divinity degree in June 2012. Pastor Susan’s interest and call to ministry began at a very early age. She was baptized and confirmed at Asbury First
United Methodist Church. As a youth, Pastor Susan participated in the Sunday School program, youth choir, bell choir and youth fellowship. During her formative years at Asbury, Pastor Susan became keenly aware of God’s presence in her life, and in the world. In retrospect, she understood her experience as a youth to be God’s call to pursue pastoral ministry, a call that has continued to form and change throughout her life. In 2008, Pastor Susan joined Webster Presbyterian Church, where she was ordained as an elder and lovingly served the congregation through the utilization of her gifts of preaching, teaching and music. Perhaps her greatest gift, however, is her love for people; a gift that translates well into her new role as Pastor for Riga Church. In addition, Pastor Susan serves as a staff Chaplain of the Rochester Regional Health System and continues her full-time sales position at Transcat, Inc. She enjoys her relationships with her family and her friends. An accomplished musician and budding theologian, Pastor Susan spends much of her personal time in study. Come join the church at the open house on Saturday, January 9 or visit for worship at 10 a.m. any Sunday. Provided information
tem harboring a very healthy and diverse fish population. It’s a shame that the Erie Canal’s fishing derby isn’t extended down through Holley, Brockport and into Spencerport. Believe me there is quite the contingent of canal anglers in the Holley/ Brockport/Spencerport area who would support the tournament. I believe another positive factor, for expanding the derby, is that local business opportunities are being overlooked and should be examined more closely. If the derby can’t be expanded, New York State offers a “free” fishing weekend, which was the 27/28 of June this year, meaning no fishing license is required for those two days. If the town and the local business community got together on this, Brockport, or any village along the canal for that matter, could hold its own two day tournament. I believe it would turn into quite the event for our town just like the arts and crafts weekend has.” Provided information

Elves and snowmen bring cheer to Beikirch Care Center Lifeskills Technology students at Brockport Oliver Middle School spread cheer to residents of Beikirch Care Center with the gift of hand-crafted elves. They worked with teachers Mike Scalzo and Scott Dauphin and classroom aides to create “elf tray favors.” Each student mass produced a different elf part, then they worked together, assembly style, to glue the hats, mittens, scarves, bells and feet to pinecones to bring the elves to life. Sixty snowmen decorations also went to Beikirch Care Center, created by second-
graders in Karen Cottom, Deborah Diorio and Jodie Shatzel’s classes. The students transformed new white socks into snowmen figures by stuffing them with beans and poly fill. The ends of the socks were cut off and used as hats, then the students decorated the snowmen with buttons, beads and pom poms. The middle and elementary classes were happy to work on projects to bring smiles to the faces of the Beikirch Care Center residents. Provided information

During the summer months from 1891 to 1925 an electric trolley ran from Charlotte to Manitou Beach. Morgan-Manning House presents “Building Futures”
Legal Notice Village of Hilton Zoning Board of Appeals PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that the Zoning Board will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street to consider the following application: 1. St. Leo’s Church, 167 Lake Avenue is asking to add additional items to an existing Conditional Use Permit to display used items outside for sale. This property is zoned residential. Dated: January 3, 2016 Mike Lissow Code Enforcement Officer
The Morgan-Manning House will present the topic, “Building Futures” on Thursday, January 14 at 151 Main Street in Brockport. The free program, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by free refreshments. Founding director Adam Jablonski will discuss the work of Building Futures, Inc., building classrooms and other sustainable developments in Kenya. Established in 2007, Building Futures, Inc., can be described as “an organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities in the African nation.” “Our group accomplishes this through building or rebuilding schools,” Jablonski said. “What I believe to be our crowning achievement was the construction of a health clinic compound that became a small hospital when the project was completed in early 2014.” Jablonski lives in Fairport with his wife Andrea. They have three children ages 20 to 24. The entire family has been active within the organization both in Kenya and here in the U.S. In case of inclement weather, the presentation will take place on January 21. Kendall schools partner with Orleans County Resources to educate community
1776 Hilton-Parma Corners Rd. Spencerport, NY 14559 585-352-3411 www.westsidenewsny.com
Kendall Central Schools (KCS) has begun a partnership with all five Orleans County school superintendents, the Orleans County Sheriff ’s Office, Orleans County District Attorney’s Office and Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (GCASA) to educate students and their families about drugs, the dangers of texting and driving, and bullying and cyber bullying. The goal is to create awareness among students and adults so that everyone can recognize the signs of risky behaviors and the avenues to pursue to obtain help. KCS plans on partnering with the police department to offer educational sessions to students, parents and district employees on the types of synthetic drugs that circulate through Orleans County and the various forms they are being distributed in. The district hopes to convey clearly that if someone tries a drug once, it can lead to addiction, brain injury and/or death because of the potent level of chemicals that come in a single dose of a synthetic substance. They want to make everyone aware of the signs of drug use and/or addiction, so that if a student(s) sees a friend abusing drugs, they can ask an adult to intervene. The district plans to provide age-appropriate education to elementary through high school students during school
hours as well as evening information sessions offered to parents. “We need to educate everyone to stop the use of drugs in our area,” said Julie Christensen, district superintendent. “We hope to begin offering education sessions this year and make it a series of sessions next school year.” The district also plans on educating high school students about the dangers of drunk driving, driving while high on drugs, texting while driving and risks when using social media. The district addresses student conflict by educating students about the different forms of bullying/conflict, such as cyber bullying via social media, text and email. Students learn proactive strategies through the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program and information conveyed from the district’s instructional technology specialist. The Elementary Student Council has constructed a buddy bench that will be placed on the playground so that students can sit on it when feeling lonely and looking for someone to play with. For more information, contact Communications Specialist Beth Nash at 349-9028 or email bnash@monroe2boces. org. Provided information

Former Brockport Mayor receives settlement in lawsuit against village police chief Former Brockport Mayor Maria “Connie” Castaneda has received a $90,000 settlement stemming from a lawsuit she filed against the Village, Police Chief Daniel Varrenti and Police Lieutenant Mark Cuzzupoli. Castaneda filed the civil lawsuit seeking fair compensation following her arrest by Brockport Police on criminal charges of official misconduct and falsifying business records. She was accused of illegally renting an apartment in her home to students while she was mayor. The criminal charges were later thrown out by Ogden Town Justice David Murante. Castaneda has said she felt the charges were politically motivated and in a press release following the settlement stated: “Let the ninety thousand dollar payment tendered to me in response to my federal lawsuit ... send a strong message to our elected officials about the need for additional checks and balances against official
power - particularly police power. “Any abuse of official power for private gain is the worst kind of betrayal of the public trust,” she continued, “the kind that chills and stifles free speech and political dissent; the kind that corrupts democracy.” The Village of Brockport also issued a statement regarding the settlement agreement: “A primary component of this settlement agreement is that neither the Village, nor Chief or Lieutenant acknowledge, admit or are found to have engaged in any misconduct or wrongdoing as was alleged by Ms. Castaneda. The Village, the Chief and Lieutenant maintain they did not engage in any such misconduct or wrongdoing. The Village Board believes these officers served our community well and deserve our thanks and support.” The village’s insurance policy will pay for the settlement. “The Village will incur no expense,” the Village’s statement said.

Rec. Foundation and town secure $446,145 grant for Sweden Town Park In a partnership that continues to benefit recreational opportunities for Sweden residents and its neighbors, the Sweden Community Recreation Foundation and Town of Sweden have secured a $446,145 grant from the New York State Regional Economic Development Council. The grant will supply the majority of funding for a 2,600 square foot Lodge, new handicapped-accessible playground equipment and a sidewalk to the canal. This is the second time that the foundation has hired grant consultant Stu Brown to pursue major funding for Sweden Town Park enhancements. In 2008, the Foundation used Brown to secure a $300,000 grant on the town’s behalf, helping to fund Nietopski Field, two multi-purpose fields, an outdoor skating rink and various other improvements. All told, the town and foundation have worked together to bring nearly a million dollars’ worth of grants and donations to the Sweden Town Park. The Sweden Park Lodge will be located about mid-park, next to Kepler’s Pond. It will feature a fireplace, kitchen and restrooms. Residents, service organizations, community groups and businesses will have the opportunity to rent the lodge for events of all types – picnics, parties and meetings – year-round. The Sweden/Clarkson Rec-
reation Department will be able to use the Lodge for programming. The grant includes funding for playground equipment to be located next to the Lodge – enhancing the venue for family activities. The Sweden Town Board has long been committed to providing life and healthenhancing recreational opportunities for its residents. Its major accomplishments include the acquisition of the 156-acre park for $1 and arranging the donation of the $3.7 million turn-key Sweden/Clarkson Community Center to the Town. The Sweden Community Recreation Foundation, a registered 501C-3 non-profit organization, believes that social recreation is vital to the physical and mental health of all, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or occupation. Foundation members believe that recreation increases the quality of life not only of individual participants, but the community in general. To that end, the foundation commits to expanding, promoting and funding recreational opportunities for the residents of the greater Sweden community. Those wishing to contribute a tax-free donation to the foundation in furtherance of these pursuits, may contact President Wayne Zyra at 637-6585 or write the Foundation at 4927 Lake Road, Brockport, NY 14420.
