Brockport teacher witnesses Abby Wambach’s final game Brockport Oliver Middle School teacher Kathleen Boughton watched Abby Wambach’s final U.S. Women’s National Team game from a suite inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on December 16. Boughton, a physical education teacher at Brockport Oliver Middle School, coached Wambach in both basketball and soccer at Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women. Wambach credits Boughton for giving her “tough love” and helping her to learn the value of respect. After a field dedication in her honor at Mercy last year, Wambach said, “I’ve had a lot of coaches in my life, a lot of amazing soccer-mind coaches in my life. There is no better motivator that I’ve ever been coached by than Kathy.” Boughton feels proud to have played a role in coaching America’s all-time leading scorer. “I never thought I’d be the coach of the number one soccer player in the world,” said Boughton. Wambach invited Boughton to join her closest friends and family members to watch her final game against China in the suite provided by U.S. Soccer. Boughton said the most special part of the trip was reuniting with Wambach’s college coach, Becky Burleigh, from the University of Florida. “When you see a player grow, it’s nice to be able to converse about it,” said Boughton. Following the game, Boughton attended Wambach’s post-game party at the House of Blues, where she met Mia Hamm, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Brandi Chastain and several other iconic soccer players. The first-ever Donut Eating Contest held during the 2015 Orleans County 4-H Fair was recognized recently by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE), which awarded the competition first place (fairs under 100,000 in attendance division) in the Competitive Exhibits (participatory contest) category of its annual contest program. Officials at Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension say they are pleased with the international attention. “This is the first time our fair has been recognized with an IAFE award and we’re all very excited,” says Robert Batt, Orleans County 4-H Youth Development Educator. The award was presented at the IAFE Convention in Las Vegas Nov. 29-Dec. 2. Brandon Johnson traveled to the convention to accept the award and to represent the Orleans Fair, Batt says. Additionally, Johnson looked for exciting new entertainment possibilities to bring to the Orleans County 4-H Fair. “Our entry will be put on a flash drive and shared along with all other winners with all member fairs,” he explains. The contest program awards, “display the level of professionalism we strive to uphold in the industry,” the IAFE website states. IAFE represents more than 1,000 fairs around the world. “These awards allow our fair members to not only compete for top honors in the respective division, contest, and categories, but also give fair representatives the opportunity to network. Having the ability to learn from one another in the fair industry is priceless,” the IAFE website continues. The Orleans County 4-H Fair Donut Eating Contest was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts and featured heats involving three participants at a time going head to head with a local law enforcement officer from the Orleans County Sheriff ’s Department to see who could consume
The first-ever donut eating contest was held at this year’s Orleans County 4-H Fair, July 27-Aug. 1. Two members of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department took on donut eating “amateurs” in two rounds to see who could eat the most of six donuts. Here, Orleans County Deputy Sheriff Jeff Cole (in sunglasses), competes in the first round. He lost out to the other contestants who received t-shirts for their efforts. Deputy Cole joked that he lost because he prefers eating bagels. Looking on is Zachary Moore, the 2014 Orleans County 4-H Fair Duke. Orleans County Sheriff’s Department investigator Ken Strickland participated in the second round and also lost out to the “amateur” contestants. Donuts were donated by Dunkin Donuts. K. The contest garnered rave reviews from participants and audience members alike. “Many people have already commented that they plan to participate again next year and we have a small number of sheriff ’s deputies working on plans and strategies for next year,” Orleans County Fair officials stated in their entry for the award.
Kendall Central Schools placed on the college board’s AP Honor Roll Kendall Central Schools (KCS) recently qualified as one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada for placement on the College Board’s Sixth Annual AP® District Honor Roll. The district received this honor for increasing access to AP courses while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams since 2013. Placement on the Sixth Annual Honor Roll indicates that a district successfully identifies motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for the opportunity of AP. “I am so pleased and proud of our students and staff for being recognized with this honor,” said Julie Christensen, school superintendent. “Kendall is one of the few districts recognized in NYS. This honor reflects the hard work of each Kendall School community member, our parents and of course, our students.”

Riga Legion lays wreaths as part of national project to honor veterans by Kristina Gabalski The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 and its Auxiliary took part in the national Wreaths Across America project in early December by placing wreaths on the graves of Mary Noone and her son, Harvey, who died in WWI in France. Their graves are located in the Churchville Cemetery. Assisting local Legion members was C/SMSgt Rebecca Hartman, Civil Air Patrol. Mary Noone donated money in her will for the building of the Riga Legion Post and it is named in honor of her son. Legion leaders say this year they decided to place a wreath on the grave of the Post’s namesake as part of the national project. The Wreaths Across America project began about 30 years ago with the mission to remember, honor and teach. Each year a wreath is placed on every grave at Arlington National Cemetery on a designated Saturday in December, and now WAA partners with groups like the Civil Air Corps to place wreaths on the graves of veterans across the United States. Legion members say the wreaths placed on the Noone graves as part of Wreaths Across America are in addition the wreaths placed by the Auxiliary at each cemetery, Churchville Elementary and the library every year.

Morgan-Manning House presents “Building Futures” The Morgan-Manning House will present the topic, “Building Futures” on Thursday, January 14 at 151 Main Street in Brockport. The free program, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by free refreshments. Founding director Adam Jablonski will discuss the work of Building Futures, Inc., building classrooms and other sustainable developments in Kenya. Established in 2007, Building Futures, Inc., can be described as “an organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities in the African nation.” “Our group accomplishes this through building or
rebuilding schools,” Jablonski said. “What I believe to be our crowning achievement was the construction of a health clinic compound that became a small hospital when the project was completed in early 2014.” Jablonski lives in Fairport with his wife Andrea. Come along and ride this train Bill Sauers will present The Story of the Manitou Trolley on Tuesday, January 12 at 7 p.m. at the Grece Public Library. During the summer months from 1891 to 1925 an electric trolley ran from Charlotte to Manitou Beach. All but forgotten in this 21st century, it was the major transportation route for eight miles along the lakeshore.
“Come along and ride this train” and learn about a facinating time in the resort neighborhood of long ago and the legacy the trolley left behind. Bill Sauers, a lifelong resident of the town of Greece, is the current president of the Greece Historical Society and a member of the Town of Greece Preservation Commission. Provided information
Westside resident making his way up the broadcasting ladder by Kristina Gabalski
He says his experiences at WBSUFM 89.1 the Point at the College at Brockport, helped spark his interest in broadcasting and has opened doors for him in the industry. While at the Point, he called high school hockey games for three seasons and one season of college hockey in addition to being operations manager of the station his final year. WBSU General Manager Warren “Koz” Kozireski was especially helpful, Winthrop says. “Koz gets a lot of credit,” he explains. “Hundreds of people have come out of there (the Point). He is a mentor to many students. We keep in contact and I seek his advice. It’s great to still have him as a resource. He is so helpful.”
Matt Winthrop of Chili says he loves his work as a radio producer/broadcaster for iHeartMedia (formerly Clear Channel) in Rochester. “I like being on the air, I love being in front of a camera,” he says. “I enjoy talking and giving my opinion and interacting with listeners.” Winthrop - a 2009 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School and a 2014 graduate of the College at Brockport - is the new pre, post and between periods radio host for all Rochester Amerks games broadcast on Fox Sports 1280 WHTK this season. “Don Stevens (the Voice of the RochMatt Winthrop. K. Gabalski photo ester Americans) calls the games and I work with him,” Winthrop explains. He began working for iHeartMedia/Clear Channel during his last year at Brockport - behind the scenes at first, running the board and producing games. “I’ve been climbing the ladder since then,” Winthrop says. His current duties continue to include the production side of the Amerks broadcast as well as previewing We have a games, selecting highlights (he watches the games on great selection of his laptop from the studio) and playing game highlights and interviews. The post-game shows he hosts include taking texts and phone calls from listeners - something he has come to enjoy. Stop by or call for details “I know some callers by their name and voice. Kendall schools partner with Orleans County Resources to educate community Kendall Central Schools (KCS) has begun a partnership with all five Orleans County school superintendents, the Orleans County Sheriff ’s Office, Orleans County District Attorney’s Office and Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse (GCASA) to educate students and their families about drugs, the dangers of texting and driving, and bullying and cyber bullying. The goal is to create awareness among students and adults so that everyone can recognize the signs of risky behaviors and the avenues to pursue to obtain help. KCS plans on partnering with the police department to offer educational
sessions to students, parents and district employees on the types of synthetic drugs that circulate through Orleans County and the various forms they are being distributed in. The district hopes to convey clearly that if someone tries a drug once, it can lead to addiction, brain injury and/or death because of the potent level of chemicals that come in a single dose of a synthetic substance. They want to make everyone aware of the signs of drug use and/or addiction, so that if a student(s) sees a friend abusing drugs, they can ask an adult to intervene. The district plans to provide age-appro-
priate education to elementary through high school students during school hours as well as evening information sessions offered to parents. “We need to educate everyone to stop the use of drugs in our area,” said Julie Christensen, district superintendent. “We hope to begin offering education sessions this year and make it a series of sessions next school year.” The district also plans on educating high school students about the dangers of drunk driving, driving while high on drugs, texting while driving and risks when using social media. The district addresses student conflict by educating students about the differ-
ent forms of bullying/conflict, such as cyber bullying via social media, text and email. Students learn proactive strategies through the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program and information conveyed from the district’s instructional technology specialist. The Elementary Student Council has constructed a buddy bench that will be placed on the playground so that students can sit on it when feeling lonely and looking for someone to play with. Holley biggest winner contest keeps participants active The Holley Biggest Winner Weight Reduction Contest was in full swing at its December 1 monthly meeting in the Holley Elementary School Cafeteria. After weighing in, the participants stayed to listen to the owners of S & S Fitness and Martial Arts Center, Scott and Sandy Haug, talk about interval training and participate in a workout session led by the Haugs. The contest is in its fourth year at the school, with anyone age 10 or older who lives in Holley or works for the school district eligible to participate. In the past three years, 152 participants have lost a grand total of 901 pounds in the contest. The contest kicked off in November with a presentation on nutrition by the Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension. The 48 participants weigh in at the school on the first Tuesday of each month, and then stay for a presentation on a different aspect of exercise or nutrition. Plans for this year’s presentations include a session on meal choices led by the Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension, another exercise session using fitness equipment led by the Haugs and a fitness demonstration on proper exercise form and
equipment use by Agapé. The district invites anyone from the community to attend the informational presentations, even if they choose not to participate in the Biggest Winner program. At the December meeting, participants worked out their upper and lower bodies by doing two sets each of bicep curls, triceps extensions, skier jumps, squats and lunges with the Haugs. The two sets, or intervals, work off more calories than a constant level of effort in the same exercise because they increase the level of cardiovascular effort. At each meeting, participants have a chance to win prizes in the monthly drawing. Current prizes being offered include restaurant deals and tickets to sporting events, museums, art galleries, state parks and amusement parks. Grand prizes will be awarded to those who lose the most percentage of weight by the final meeting in June. Grand prizes so far include a Wegmans gift card, an overnight at the Rochester Airport Marriott Hotel, and cash prizes from Heath & Martin and Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc. The next meeting of the Biggest Winner

Holley High School students stage presidential debates During December, Holley High School’s Current Events class held a series of mock presidential debates before determining a final winner. Students were assigned the roles of presidential candidates, presidential advisors or moderators. The candidates worked with their advisors to prepare for each debate. The Republicans endured three rounds of debates, while the Democrats had one, due to the number of candidates running. Debate times, restricted to one class period each day, took place upon the availability of the Middle School/High School Auditorium; students from other classes made up the audience. Students voted on their cell phones to determine the winner of each debate. The moderators played an important role in breaking any ties in voting. Current Events Teacher Nick D’Amuro invited the Holley faculty and staff to watch the series of debates. He was pleased with the support from them as well as the students. “I am so happy to hear students, who aren’t even in my class, talking politics around me,” said D’Amuro. “I am so excited that our students are going above and beyond to discuss the current political
climate.” District Superintendent Robert D’Angelo agrees. “Nick and his students did an outstanding job with each and every debate,” said D’Angelo. “I was very proud to attend them and was impressed with the number of students and staff in the audience each time. This activity was a perfect example of authentic instruction and learning. I am confident that our students’ knowledge of both the political issues surrounding this presidential election as well as our political process have been greatly enhanced by these debates.” Sophomore Matt DeSimone portrayed Republican Senator Ted Cruz and went up against senior Ross Pinson as Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley in the final round. They discussed issues such as immigration, gay rights, terrorism, national debt, gun laws, health care, the middle class, jobs and religion. Moderator Mikala Smith, a senior, kept the candidates on task while D’Amuro kept track of time. The final winner, DeSimone, earned 67 votes against Pinson’s 37 votes. “The students in our district tend to lean towards the ideals of Cruz on several subjects,” said

D’Amuro. “I expected Ross to have a hard time convincing them, but he wanted to meet the challenge head-on. I am so pleased with both of their performances and their rebuttals to each other. I think both of them could end up serving in public office if they
wanted to go that route.” For more information, contact Communications Specialist Beth Nash at 349-9028 or email bnash@monroe2boces.org. Provided information

Kristen Acquilano, a mental health counselor with the county, works out of the satellite office at Kendall on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Kendall elementary through high school students are eligible for referral to the counselor by the district’s Student Referral Team. The district will provide transportation from the high school to appointments during the school day for the older students. “By having the mental health collaboration, it helps us address the stressors and the root cause of a student’s behavior at school,” said Kendall Superintendent Julie Christensen. “This is a real boost to our side of the county to offer mental health services here. Coming here rather than traveling to Albion saves our families time, plus it supplements the services provided by our district’s counseling staff. By having the satellite office at the Elementary School, students can use the services provided to help them concentrate on their studies and be positive contributors in school. This new service opportunity also encourages our parents to further engage with the district on students’ academic issues.” Since October 7, Acquilano has begun to make assessments of students, offer counseling appointments and give referrals to other Licensed Clinical Social Worker mental health professionals to help address the needs of Kristen Acquilano will work students and their families. out of the satellite office at Acquilano has a master’s Kendall two days a week. a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. The Kendall counseling staff refers the students to Acquilano. After receiving the referral, she begins the process by obtaining parent/guardian permission and insurance information, then scheduling an hour-long initial assessment. Parents/ guardians can also contact her for guidance on receiving mental health services for their children. Once the assessment is complete, she works with the students’ schedules to make regular appointments. Appointments are available in the late afternoon and early evening hours for students and their families. Parents/guardians may have the opportunity to attend counseling sessions to support their child, but parents/guardians will not be able to schedule counseling appointments for themselves.
Acquilano welcomes contact from parents/guardians through email or phone if they have feedback, questions or concerns about their children and are unable to attend an appointment with them. To contact Acquilano, email Kristen.Acquilano@orleanscountyny.gov or call her Orleans County Mental Health office phone number at 589-2787. “I am absolutely loving my experience at Kendall,” said Acquilano. “All of the staff have been warm and welcoming. I am finding it so beneficial to coordinate care with teachers and counselors. We are able to work together on case plans in order to address student needs.” For more information, contact Communications Specialist Beth Nash at 349-9028 or email bnash@monroe2boces. org. Riga Church welcomes new pastor The First Congregational Church of Riga welcomes Susan Lancaster Garofalo as its new pastor. To celebrate this event, the church will hold an open house on Saturday, January 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at 7057 Chili-Riga Center Road. This will provide everyone in the community to get to know Pastor Susan. Having grown up in Irondequoit, Pastor Susan studied music education at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music, where she majored in piano. Following her studies, she joined the workforce and began building a long, successful sales career that continues today. Finishing her undergraduate degree was important to Pastor Susan. She began researching degree programs that would allow her to consolidate her music education studies with her professional experience. Her research paid off. After two years of coursework, Pastor Susan received her undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology. After much discernment, Pastor Susan began her postgraduate studies at Northeastern Seminary, earning her Master of Divinity degree in June 2012. Pastor Susan’s interest and call to ministry began at a very early age. She was baptized and confirmed at Asbury
First United Methodist Church. As a youth, Pastor Susan participated in the Sunday School program, youth choir, bell choir and youth fellowship. During her formative years at Asbury, Pastor Susan became keenly aware of God’s presence in her life, and in the world. In retrospect, she understood her experience as a youth to be God’s call to pursue pastoral ministry, a call that has continued to form and change throughout her life. In 2008, Pastor Susan joined Webster Presbyterian Church, where she was ordained as an elder and lovingly served the congregation through the utilization of her gifts of preaching, teaching and music. Perhaps her greatest gift, however, is her love for people; a gift that translates well into her new role as Pastor for Riga Church. In addition, Pastor Susan serves as a staff Chaplain of the Rochester Regional Health System and continues her full-time sales position at Transcat, Inc. She enjoys her relationships with her family and her friends. An accomplished musician and budding theologian, Pastor Susan spends much of her personal time in study. Come join the church at the open house on Saturday, January 9 or visit for worship at 10 a.m. any Sunday. Provided information

Strengthening tips to aid flexibility (StatePoint) If you work out a couple times a week, you are on the right path to good health. But experts say this can and should be just the beginning of your fitness journey. “Our bodies are designed to be fast, powerful and agile,” says Paul “Coach” Wade, fitness expert and author of the new book “Explosive Calisthenics.” “However, modern Americans have become the slowest, least agile members of our species in all history.” Wade says a vanishing percent of people even attempt to unlock their body’s full athletic potential. To help, he is offering tips to take your overall fitness to the next level. Ditch the excuses Getting in great shape requires consistency, and it’s all too easy to make excuses for missing a workout. Whether you’re always on the road or can’t afford to renew your gym membership, Wade says such excuses don’t hold water. “While modern training methods involve equipment like barbells, balls, boxes and gymnastics gear, the superior way of building maximum speed, power and ability is the old-school method of using just your body’s own weight, nothing else,” he says. Whether you’re crunched for time or crunched for space, don’t let these circumstances prevent you from getting a great workout. Pushups, squats, leg raises, bridges and jumps are just a few fundamental exercises that can be performed in a small space without any gear. Ditch the fear Traditional calisthenic moves used by gymnasts, martial artists, athletes and tumblers - such as flips and kipups - may seem intimidating. But Wade says that most people have the inherent ability to master such moves by working on each one in progressions. “Movements like these have been handed down from generation to generation,” he says. “They should not be the exclusive domain of gymnasts.”
The meetings are open to the Public. Meetings for 2016 are as follows: January 5, 2016 February 2, 2016 March 1, 2016 April 5, 2016 May 3, 2016 June 7, 2016 July 5, 2016 August – No Meeting September 6, 2016 October 4, 2016 November 1, 2016 December 6, 2016
Stay focused Don’t try to take shortcuts. Successful athletes don’t leap ahead and tackle moves they aren’t ready for - they find ways to make the stuff they can already do work even better for them. For tips and information, visit www.dragondoor.com.

Northwood students celebrate Computer Science Education Week with Hour of Code Northwood Elementary School students received the opportunity to take part in a one-hour introduction to computer science designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics. The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a not-forprofit working toward expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by females and students of color. Code.org encouraged students around the country to try an Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week – December 7 through 13. In the Hilton School District, Ed Donnelly, Northwood teacher, asked his fellow teachers to have their students watch an introductory two-minute video, and then try one of the Hour of Code tutorials during their computer time. Third through sixth grade students interested in pursuing code further had an opportunity to spend an hour coding with him. The students were then encouraged to continue coding on their own at home using additional tutorials. “I learned how to make my own version of a game by using correct sequences to code movements,” said Kayla Anstett, a sixth grader in Laura Mayer’s class. “I also learned how the angles effect how a character would move.” “Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science,” said Donnelly. “It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. After School Program to become the first of its kind in Monroe County The Friends of the Gates Public Library are partnering with the Gates Public Library and Neil Armstrong Elementary School to launch an educational after school program this spring. The Gates Public Library is the first library in the region to pilot this type of program. The goal of the new program is to help students from Neil Armstrong Elementary develop critical skills through reading, interactive technology, games and art projects that reinforce key components of literacy. “We are lucky we’ve got a great library in Gates,” said Sue Swanton. “A few months ago though, we were concerned to hear from a teacher at Neil Armstrong that the majority of his students weren’t able to go to the library because they lack transportation.” During the months of April and May 2016, K-5 students from Neil Armstrong Elementary School will receive bus transportation to the Gates Public Library, where they will participate in engaging and creative activities tailored to each grade level. At the end of each day, parents can explore the library with their children and check out books to bring home.
Churchville-Chili graduate panel: Preparing for life after high school Churchville-Chili High School invites parents and high school students to come out for an informative evening as several of its recent graduates reflect on their experiences at Churchville-Chili and how prepared they were for life after high school. The graduates will represent those entering the military, the job force, local colleges, state and private universities. After hearing the graduates talk about their experiences, current students will have an opportunity to ask specific questions about being prepared for life after high school and beyond. This event will take place on Thursday, January 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at MSS Forum (door 42) and is sponsored by the FLASH Committee. Provided information
