Brockport receives $1.2 million TAP grant
Hilton Middle School teacher honored for dedication to veterans On June 24, Merton Williams Middle School Social Studies Teacher Pam Tenny was honored for her 30 years of teaching and her dedication to the veterans in our community. In front of a crowd of veterans, her fellow teachers, her students and local dignitaries, Tenny was presented with the New York State American Legion Red, White and Blue Award by members of the Hiscock-Fishbaugh American Legion Post 788, and a NYS Assembly citation by Assemblyman Josh Jensen, her former student. Tenny also was honored with a brick in the memorial at Hilton Community Center for the many Veterans Day ceremonies that she organized over the years. The Village of Brockport has been awarded a $1.2 million Federal TAP (Transportation Alternatives Program) grant for Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety improvements to the Smith Street Bridge. This threeyear project involves replacement of sidewalks on the Smith Street approach to the bridge, continuing the sidewalk on the Clinton Street side of the bridge that now ends in a guard rail, replacing the steep stairs on the west side of the bridge, and reconstructing the crumbling retaining wall on the Clinton Street approach to the bridge. Crosswalks at Clinton Street and Smith Street will allow pedestrians to safely cross the two streets. Two push-button-activated traffic lights and metal bicycle plates installed on the bridge will increase pedestrian and bicyclist safety. This project is part of the Brockport Loop, a circular route along the north and south sides of the Erie Canal, anchored by the Smith Street bridge at the east end and the new Reimagine the Canal pedestrian bridge by the guard gate at the west end. Construction at the Smith Street bridge site will be carefully coordinated with the upcoming Main Street bridge closure since the Smith Street bridge will be one of just two canal crossings in the village during that period. Construction work under the grant will be contracted out, and the 20% required local match of grant funds will come from ARPA (American Rescue Program Act) funds awarded to the village. Little Red to be restored and renovated; will be new site for Ogden Historian
Little Red is located at 416 Washington Street, Spencerport.
The Town of Ogden’s Little Red building is entering a new chapter as it will soon be renovated and serve as the new site for the Town Historian. Little Red has historically been one of the sites for the Town’s preschool programs. However, it was announced last year that 2022 would be the final graduating class of the Town’s pre-school program at Little Red. “With Spencerport School District launching free universal preschool, the Town’s program saw a significant decrease in enrollment. That’s what really led to the decision to halt preschool programs at Little Red. This building means so much to our Town and we are certainly sad to have to make this difficult decision to combine our programs in order to continue offering our residents pre-school at the Town Hall campus. I recognize this announcement came
as a bit of a surprise to many last year, and the looming question on everyone’s mind became, what will happen to Little Red,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. After months of collaboration with Town officials, the Town Board has approved of the preservation and restoration of Little Red and agreed that utilizing it as a historical facility will greatly benefit the community. “Little Red has been a staple in our community for a very long time so what better place to showcase the town’s history than a building rich with history itself,” said Zale. “I’m thrilled it will continue to be a resource for all. I will be sure to keep everyone updated as we transition to this new chapter.” Provided information and photo
