Fortitude, Friendship, Family and Faith – this is what has contributed to St. John Lutheran Church in Hamlin celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2024.
The township of Hamlin in the northwest corner of Monroe County was incorporated in 1861.The growth of the area had been difficult due to the remoteness, and a plethora of wooded land and boggy nature of the area. However, by the late 1860s immigrants from the area of Mecklenburg, Germany, began their life in America here and established farms on which the character and history of Hamlin grew its roots. The humble beginnings of the “First Lutheran Reformed Society” began in 1869 in a small district school building, holding services on the corner of East Fork and Brickschoolhouse Road – aptly titled. These strong-hearted settlers desired to have their own building in which to gather and worship.
Eighty-two members were listed on the early rolls of St. John Lutheran Church as they built the first church on the rounding corner of Church Road and Lake Road West Fork, at a cost of $4,000. The price was a hefty sum at that time, but they were guided by their will and strong faith in God. Rev. Carl Staerker was the great-grandfather of Henry Lehning, a current and lifelong member of the church. Many of the ancestral roots have continued over the span of the church’s 150 years.
These are just some of the family names that have been a part of the church family throughout its history: Baase, Bauch, Bauer, Ergott, Freitag, Goltermann, Graupmann, Grimm, Heise, Hueser, Jacobs, Jennejahn, Kaiser, Klafehn, Koss, Ladue, Lardner, Lasch, Lemcke, Leverenz, Nettnin, Newman, Oehlbeck, Ophardt, Priem, Rachow, Rath, Rockow, Rose, Schepler, Seaman, Unterborn and Wolf.
As membership continued to grow, the church needed a larger facility. The current sanctuary was dedicated in May 1908. At a total cost of $20,000 for the church and the surrounding barns to house the horses that transported the members to church, the mortgage of $7,000 was paid off in 1914. St. John’s membership also helped monetarily to begin St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hilton and Concordia Lutheran Church in Brockport.
St. John Lutheran Church was the first congregation in the Rochester area to establish a Christian Day School. Classes were taught in German until English was introduced in 1903 by teacher A.G. Frinke. When World War I started, the focus on instruction in German ended. The 1940s brought the building additions of the Parish hall and more classrooms; Kindergarten was added in 1946 and pre-school in 1972. The Paul Klopp annex was built in 1995, and in 1998, the church’s majestic gazebo was donated by Margaret Bauch in loving memory of her husband, Fred.
baseball field has a history of hosting countless games, which at one time were “under the lights.” The gymnasium, besides being used for basketball and other sports, has been the site of plays and comedies by the youth, more church dinners and receptions than one can count, and wedding receptions. St. John’s Bazaar has become the church’s “Fall Festival,” utilizing the gym as well as other spaces on the church grounds.
In 1953, St. John Lutheran added something that has been very special and is still in use to this day – a bowling alley. Prior to being remodeled for classroom space, the basement was used for roller-skating.
The Dorcas Society (ladies) celebrated their 100th year as well this year. No church organization could be successful without the hard work of the Church Ladies, that they make look like a “well-oiled machine.” Sunday School classes, Vacation Bible School, Adult Choir, Ladies Trio, Praise Team, Celebration Ringers, Mission Group, Ushers, Altar Guild, Beautification Committee, Board of Elders, Board of Trustees, Worship Committee, Finance Board, Youth Group, organists, secretaries, and custodians past and present, M & M’s, Senior Citizens – everyone finds a way to share their talents and time.
Much has changed in 150 years. Parking lots are where the horse barns once stood. Electricity has modernized the buildings and heating and cooling as well as a speaker
system. A beautiful, updated organ delivers music for services as well as a piano, electric piano, guitars and drums. Riding lawnmowers and a plow help maintain the grounds and keep the lots open for parking. A school is no longer a part of the church’s ministry, but many credit their quality Christian education as the core for their lives which they share with their children and grandchildren. The countless baptisms, confirmations, marriage ceremonies and meaningful funeral services of many are a part of that history. The services are no longer in German, but in English. Seating pads make for more comfort, and handicapped access is now available.
Constant and enduring on the rounding corner of the Lake Road West Fork is their faith in God for 150 years of blessings.
The church has held several events over the past 12 months and will culminate its celebration of 150 years with a special church service on November 17, honoring the past, present and future of St. John Lutheran Church in Hamlin.

GPAS to honor veterans with a celebration of American music
The Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) will present their American Music Celebration Concert on Sunday, November 10, 3 p.m., at the Greece Olympia School Auditorium, 1139 Maiden Lane, Rochester. Honoring our veterans, this gala program will feature patriotic music and Americana favorites performed by the Greece Choral Society directed by Dr. Rollo Fisher, Greece Community Orchestra directed by Jonathan Allentoff, and the Greece Concert Band

PHHS hosts presentation on Hilton girl who worked for Mussolini
The Parma Hilton Historical Society’s November program will be held Monday, November 11, 7 p.m., in the Ingham Room at the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street. It will be a ZOOM presentation by Dr. Brian Griffith entitled “The Hilton Girl Who Worked for Mussolini.”
Ruth Williams Ricci grew up in Hilton as Ruth Williams and lived at what is now 32 West Avenue. Her father, Dr. W.W. Williams, was a Hilton doctor who delivered all the babies in town between 1887 and 1915. Her mother was Loretta Burritt, granddaughter of Giles Burritt, a pioneer settler for whom Burritt Road is named.
Ruth received her nursing training in Rochester and later moved to New York City where she held an adminis-
trative post at the Women’s Hospital. In 1925, she married Dr. James Vincent Ricci, one of Manhattan’s premier obstetricians. He was Italian by birth and pro-fascist in the 1920s and ‘30s. This is where Ruth’s fascist story begins. Ruth spent her time in Italy as a nurse and journalist. She was an American and the only woman on the ship Gradska that was involved in the Ethiopian Campaign with Mussolini’s forces.
Brian Griffith, PhD. and Assistant Professor at UCLA in California, selected Ruth Ricci as his thesis. He tells the story of her time in Europe and Italy from 1935 to 1941, presenting the pre-World War II story of Ricci’s adventures.

Nativity BVM Church hosting presentation for older adults
The westside community has an aging population with many questions and needs. In Monroe County, 25% of all residents are now age 60+ for the first time in our history, while neighboring towns and counties are over 25%. The Human Concerns Committee of Brockport’s Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is hosting a free presentation for older adults on the many services available to assist them.

Award-winning writer Alicia Elliott to present the Ingersoll Reading at REOC
Award-winning Mohawk writer Alicia Elliott will discuss her work at the Rochester Educational Opportunity Center, 161 Chestnut Street, Rochester, as part of the Ingersoll Reading, a premier event of SUNY Brockport’s Writers Forum, on November 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Elliot is the author of And Then She Fell , a national bestseller in Canada that has garnered accolades including the Indigenous First Voices Award and the Amazon First Novel Award. The novel was also recognized as one of the best books of 2023 by both the Globe and Mail and CBC.
In addition to Elliot’s fiction, her 2019 memoir, A Mind Spread Out On The Ground , received praise from prestigious publications such as The New York Times, Vogue, and the Toronto Star. Monroe County Veterans Day Parade to be sponsored by Salvatore’s Pizza
Monroe County’s Third Annual Veterans Day Parade is sponsored by Salvatore’s Pizza. The parade will be held on Saturday, November 9, and will kick off at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of South Goodman Street and Highland Avenue and proceed up Highland Avenue to the Greater Rochester Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Gary Beikirch Park on South Avenue.
The Grand Marshal of this year’s parade will be “The Vietnam Veteran,” in recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. A float will carry members of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 20 as the centerpiece of the parade.

Ogden recognizes Donna Taylor for 30 years of service
On Wednesday, October 23, the Ogden Town Board honored Town Receptionist Donna Taylor for her 30 years of dedicated service to the Town of Ogden. Donna began her career on October 24, 1994, as a Clerk Typist in the Administration Department. Over the past three decades, she has held various clerical positions in the Personnel Department, Finance Department, Supervisor’s Office, and currently in Town Clerk Noelle Burley’s Office. She has served under three town supervisors: former Town Supervisors Donald Walzer and Gay Lenhard, and the current Town Supervisor, Mike Zale.
“Throughout the years, Donna has been a true asset to our community, always ready to lend a helping hand to residents with a positive attitude and a smile,” said Zale. “As Town Supervisor, I’ve witnessed her unwavering commitment to ensuring that everything runs smoothly at Town Hall. If

The Spencerport Fire District has been awarded an exclusive IAFC VCOS Analytics Grant in partnership with Deccan International. This grant represents a significant achievement for the district, reflecting its commitment to excellence in fire service and community safety.
The IAFC (International Association of Fire Chiefs) Deccan International Analytics Grant empowers fire districts to use historical response data from multiple sources to easily create actionable
reporting information to guide leadership decision making. The Spencerport Fire District’s acceptance of this grant underscores its ongoing efforts to enhance its capabilities and provide the highest level of service to the community.

Spirits shared their stories during annual Ghost Walk in Spencerport
This year’s Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk was held on Friday, October 11, and Saturday, October 12, with sold out performances both evenings. The weather was cool and clear for the community to walk around the village and hear historical and spooky tales. The efforts of many contributed to make the event a success – greeters, guides, actors, Studio 19 Dance Company dancers, Russ Young and his hearse, servers, the Ogden Special Police, and Joel Humphrey for coming up with most of the Ghost Walk stories. Spencerport Depot and Trolley Museum and Hunt Real Estate ERA also lent their support to the event. Refreshments were donated by Brockport Wegmans and Spencerport Tops. SUNY Brockport Athletics gives back
The SUNY Brockport athletic department and student-athletes found success off the field on Sunday, October 27, as they participated in numerous community service activities in an effort to give back to the Brockport community.
The student-athletes from SAAC collected 653 pounds of food from the community, all of which will be donated to the Brockport Food Shelf located at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
The athletics department capped off the weekend of giving back on Sunday with their annual commu-
nity leaf raking event. The Golden Eagles had more than 500 student-athletes participate in the event, providing help to over 35 yards in the area.
The Golden Eagles enjoy giving back to a community that is constantly coming out to support them and look to continue their efforts in the seasons to come.

Shall the following resolution be adopted to wit: Resolved that the Board of Education of the Brockport Central School District is hereby authorized to undertake certain capital improvements consisting of addition to the High School Building, and improvements to, and reconstruction of, various school buildings and facilities, site and athletic field improvements and the acquisition of certain original furnishings, equipment, and apparatus and other incidental improvements required in connection therewith for such construction and school use, all at an estimated maximum aggregate cost of $65,980,000; and to appropriate and expend from existing capital reserve funds $16,700,000 for such costs, and that the balance of such cost, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax to be collected in annual installments, with such tax to be offset by state aid available therefor; and, in anticipation of such tax, debt obligations of the school district as may be necessary not to exceed $49,280,000 shall be issued.
The School District, acting as lead agency under the State Environmental Quality Review Act and the applicable regulations promulgated thereunder (“SEQRA”), has completed its environmental review and, on October 15, 2024, has duly issued a negative declaration and has determined that the implementation of the unlisted action as proposed will not result in any significant adverse environmental impacts.

Celebrating 150 years of God’s blessings at St. John Lutheran Church

The members of St. John Lutheran Church have held several events to celebrate the church’s 150th anniversary year in 2024.
In November 2023, a pot luck dinner “kicked off’ the festivities for the year with many pictures and artifacts being displayed, for this church shares a rich history in the town of Hamlin.
In March, a thank you dinner for our area first responders was held in honor for the service and time that they have given to the members of the church and the Hamlin community.
“Reunion Weekend” on July 19 and 20 welcomed past or current members of the church, those who attended or worked for the school, or held any connection to St. John’s for two special events: “An Evening of Jazz and Comedy” with performances by the Ann Mitchell Trio, and comedians Dan Kulp and Dan Viola. Ann sang Jazz standards and special selected songs, accompanied by her talented musicians. Laughter and music are two wonderful forms of artistic ex-

Now in its sixth year, Puzzles for Golisano is a local organization that provides toys to Golisano Children’s Hospital. It started with a humble collection of 38 puzzles made by Brockport resident, Anthony P. Gruttadauro. Since then, it has blossomed into a vibrant endeavor that delivered 138 puzzles last year alone. And the organization didn’t stop there: they also provided an 18-wheeler tractor trailer filled with joy, laughter, and endless fun for the children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital toy room.
Each puzzle is not just a toy; it’s a lifeline. These vibrant and engaging puzzles help to develop essential motor skills, while also serving as a therapeutic escape for little warriors. They operate like a magical por-

•Graf, Tina, age 81, died August 7, 2024. Born on April 23, 1943, Tina devoted her life to serving others, both through her professional and personal endeavors. Tina is survived by her brothers, Richard and George; and sister, Joan Rittwage; her children, Rick (Maribeth), Hank (Susan), and Dina (Mark); her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Fegan, mother, Velma Snyder, and brother, Ronald Fegan. Tina pursued a career in nursing. She was a secretary at Arnold Gregory Hospital in Albion, and a nurse at the American Red Cross, Dr. Raj Mehta’s office and The Episcopal Church Home. Tina worshipped at Clarkson Community Church and St. Luke’s and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church A Memorial Service to celebrate Tina’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2 Jackson Street, Holley, on Saturday, November 9 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. She had a passion for supporting LGBTQ+ issues, neurodiversity, mental health healing, and standing up against any and all injustices in the world.

Linda Mae Burlingame was a remarkable individual whose life was characterized by a profound commitment to helping others, a deep love for her family, and a spirited dedication to her community. In 1973, Linda began her career as a family care provider, a role she dedicated herself to for decades. She was a polio pioneer, having lived through two pandemics, and her passion for helping others led her to become actively involved in various organizations. Linda was a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ, where she sang in the choir. She served on the family care regional advisory board and the commissioners’ advisory board, advocating for the Family Care Program and those in its care. Linda was also a founding member of Boy Scout Troop 327, reflecting her commitment to youth and community service.

Tom is survived by his wife Elaine; children, Thomas (Laura) Jones, Michelle (Mark) Hatfield; grandchildren, Joshua (fiancé Thais) Hatfield, Megan Hatfield, Sean Jones, Rachel Jones; and sister Cheryl (Charles) Brockett. Tom served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War as a combat photographer before returning home and working for Eastman Kodak Company. He spent over 30 years working at Kodak before retiring in 2000. Tom loved to go hunting, enjoyed golfing, softball and anything that was athletic related. Traveling all over the world with his wife Elaine was something they both enjoyed doing together.

Churchville Volunteer FD to receive state grant
On October 25, Governor Kathy Hochul awarded $25 million in New York State funding to improve facilities and response capabilities for agencies comprised of volunteer firefighters. This funding, provided by the State of New York through the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, is being awarded to 88 entities across the State through the Volunteer Fire Infrastructure & Response Equipment Grant Program. The State funding for this initiative is divided into two tracks of eligible projects, facility improvement projects and equipment purchase projects.
Churchville Volunteer Fire Department is receiving a $45,500 facilities grant which will go towards replacing their on-site power generator. The generator allows the station to serve as a shelter for Riga residents in the case of natural disasters or unexpected outages.
“Volunteer firefighters exemplify the best of public servants, and an investment in them is an investment in the safety of the communities they serve,” Governor Hochul said. “These grants will give volunteer firefighters the resources they need to continue protecting New Yorkers; support befitting of their professionalism and the invaluable weight of their efforts.”
Applications from volunteer fire departments were evaluated and scored competitively by a team of civil servants at the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services using a multi-tiered listing of criteria. The scoring process not only evaluated the timeliness and completeness of applications, but also a number of other factors including the department’s annual operating budget. Those with smaller annual operating budgets were given priority.

Churchville-Chili won their first boys soccer Section V championship since 1990 last season and, despite losing several key players from that roster, embarked on the 2024 playoffs as the top seed in Class AA.
After an 11-3-1 regular season, what hasn’t changed from one year ago is that they are having success emphasizing defense, having allowed only eight goals total through the first round of the playoffs. They have a full complement of juniors in goal and on the back line in Isaac Bailey, Braeden Naujokas, Kyler Thomas, and center-back Ryan Vujanovic in front of top-five goalkeeper (.49 goals against average) Mason Simmons.
“For our team, we’re focused on defense a lot and it’s really important to us that we work on shutouts, work on defending, and go forward from there,” Simmons said.
“We’ve really come together…we had this past week off to really bond and worked on our chemistry and feeling better coming into this sectional round,” said junior midfielder Christopher Keller.
The Saints have outscored their opponents 32-8 through the sectional quarterfinals and were ranked 14th in New York State in Class AA by New York State Sportswriters as of October 29.
And they are getting their offense from multiple sources, preventing opposing defenses from keying on just one or two players. You have to scroll down to page four among scoring leaders in Section V to find the first Saint. Indicative of that was their 2-0 victory over Webster-Schroeder in the first round.

“It’s just a mix this year,” Keller said. “We don’t have a star player, which is good and bad. We all have to rely on each other, and we’ve got each other’s back, and we know that together we can find a way.”
“We graduated some good talent…but we returned about 15 guys who played significant minutes and probably of those 15, most of them started a game last year,” head coach John Mahoney said.
“Mason is an outstanding goalie (and) I knew what he was coming in. He’s got ten shutouts on the year – one away from the school record – and one away from the career record (19).
“I always wonder where the goals are going to come from…but the team we have is filled with workers. I knew we’re smart, but guys have stepped up.”
The Saints reached the playoff championship games several times over the years only to fall one game short of earning a brick. That ended last year with the long-awaited title and they have carried that momentum through this season.

“Absolutely; those games were difficult that we went in to and that’s taught all the returners coming back and set the standard for all the young guys coming up that this is our level, and this is what we want to accomplish,” Keller said.

The Town of Clarkson Water Improvement Benefit Area No. 1 November 1, 2024
The Town’s engineers, MRB Group, provided the following update:
•Contractor started water main installation October 14th on Drake Road near NYS Rt 104
•As of October 29th, the Contractor has approximately 8,000 linear feet of water main installed along Drake Road working south from NYS Route 104.
•Contractor will provide monthly schedules going forward with the current schedule as follows:
