Redhawks men advance to NCCAA semifinals

The roberts Wesleyan University men’s soccer team has reached the semifinal round of the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I Nation Championship tournament.

The redhawks scored all of their goals in the second half to overpower sixth-seeded C entral Christian College (m c p herson, Kansas) 3-0 on November 30 at the AustinTindall Sports Complex.

roberts (10-4-6), which defeated Cov enant College 3-2 on November 28, finished 2-0 in pool play. roberts is seeded second in the semifinals and will play No. 3 Southwestern Christian University on December 2 roberts has finished second at NCCAA’s twice in program history.

“We had kind of a slow start in the first half, but we really came on in the second half and took care of business,” roberts

Junior Tamas Nagy scored twice in 2:55 as the redhawks took control of the match and Justin robertson put it away with a spectacular individual effort that saw him dribble more than 70 yards through the Tigers’ defense before banking his shot off the left post for his eighth goal of the season.

After a quiet first half, the redhawks broke through in the 58th minute. Nathan Ferguson sent a long clear to the top of the Central Christian 18-yard-line where Nagy won the ball, cut to his left and fired a 15yard shot into the net for his 14th goal of the season.

Nagy struck again less than three minutes later. Dylan ruiz had his initial shot blocked by a defender, but the senior

recovered the ball and sent it in front to Nagy for the finish and 2-0 lead.

“He’s really stepping up,” reber said of Nagy, who is tied with ruiz for the team lead in goals and also tops the redhawks with 11 assists. “He has always had the ability and now he has the confidence, too. It’s really exciting and nice to see.”

robertson completed the scoring in the 69th minute, picking up the ball along the sideline near the top of the roberts’ box and going end-to-end, splitting three Central Christian defenders along the way, for one of the most spectacular strikes of the redhawks’ season.

“When J-rob gets a head of steam like that there is no stopping him,” r eber said.

Senior Jared Gibbons made two saves to record his fifth shutout of the season.

Redhawks women returning to NCCAA semifinals

The roberts Wesleyan University women’s soccer team has earned a berth in the semifinal round of the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I National Championship tournament for the second time in four seasons.

roberts, the second overall seed in pool play, defeated No. 5 Carolina University 3-0 on November 30 at the Austin-Tindall Sports Complex to secure a spot in the December 2 semifinals.

The redhawks were seeded first when the field was reseeded for the semifinals and will play fourth-seeded Oakland City University on December 2.

“We were not as sharp as we are used

to being (on November 30), but the team did well to see the game through,” roberts coach Sarah mcClellan said. “Once again, the goals we scored today were quality.”

The redhawks, who defeated Columbia International University 4-0 on November 28, captured pool b with six points. roberts also reached the semifinals in 2019 before falling to eventual national champion Cedarville University, 1-0.

Junior Gabrielle Ciambella opened the scoring for roberts in the ninth minute. Justine Sharda sent a high pass into the middle, Ciambella headed the ball to the ground and kicked it in for her seventh of the season.

roberts had several quality opportunities in the second half before Ciambella found a cutting Kara Choate in front of goal in the 78th minute. Choate put one touch on the ball and finished from 10 yards out for her fifth goal of the season.

Freshman Kaeleigh romero closed out the scoring, notching her fifth of the season in the 90th minute.

roberts registered 24 shots in the game, 12 in each half, while controlling play throughout.

Strand Theater getting a makeover courtesy of a Main Street Grant

The Village of Brockport, in collaboration with the owners of the Strand Theater, have received a Main Street Grant, the Village’s second. Totaling $108,525, this New York state grant, funded through the Housing Trust Fund, is for an “anchor property.” The historic 1907 movie theater certainly is an anchor, standing as the southernmost building in Brockport’s downtown corridor which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The grant requires a 25% match from the business owner but no funds from the Village. Administration of the grant is covered by the funding. The Village’s responsibility is to assure that contracting for labor follows the stipulated procedures, meets all building/code requirements, and that the job is completed as planned.

“We are extremely honored and grateful to receive the Main Street Anchor Award on behalf of the Brockport Strand Theater,” said theater owners Jason and Jeff Yantz. “The Brockport Strand Theater has a very rich history that dates back many generations. This grant will help ensure that the Strand Theater will continue to operate as one of the oldest movie theaters in the country for future generations to enjoy. The proceeds from this grant will be used to update both restrooms, repair the roof and building structures, restore the front facade tiles to their former glory and various other projects. We would like to thank New York State for awarding us this grant and the community of Brockport for their continued support.”

Hilton High School sophomore to compete in Prix de Lausanne ballet competition

Madison Bevilacqua, a sophomore at Hilton High School, put on her first ballet shoes at age three. Since then she has competed with dancers from around the country and around the world in the Youth America Grand Prix, American Dance Competition/Youth International Ballet Competition, New York City Dance Alliance as well as several local competitions. Where is she headed next? At the end of January, Madison will travel to Switzerland to compete in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne.

“It has always been a dream of mine to partici-

ers from among 429 applicants in 39 countries. A total of 76 dancers, ranging in age from 15 to 18 years old, were selected to compete in the Prix de Lausanne.

“It is so exciting and such an honor to have been selected for this amazing opportunity,” said Madison. “I feel that since I am at such a young age in the competition, it makes this a better learning experience because I get to learn from other dancers my age and older and also learn from incredible teachers.”

Madison currently trains at the Draper Center for Dance Education in Rochester. This past summer, she also received a scholarship to attend

a ballet program at Ellison Ballet in New York City.

Madrigalia sparks holiday joy in Brockport concert on December 11

Nothing tugs at the heartstrings like voices moving in close harmony.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will be hosting the nationally known chamber choir Madrigalia in concert Sunday, December 11, at 4 p.m. The live, in-person performance will feature the Celtic stylings of fiddler Daphne Pickens with pianist Yi-Wen Chang. Artistic Director Cary Ratcliff will conduct his own fresh arrangements and joyful songs celebrating Channukah, Christmas, and the winter solstice.

One fan said, “It’s music from the heart that makes the world feel normal again.”

The ensemble draws inspiration from all times and places, spanning the riches of classic styles and mixing in intriguing expressions of cultures throughout the world. Its annual holiday radio special on National Public Radio stations has earned Madrigalia fans all over the country.

Milt Danko, of Spencerport, single-handedly solicited donations totaling $1,200 for the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of his wife, Nancy , who resides at Elderwood of Lakeside at Brockport. Milt and Nancy have been married for 55 years and he visits her at Elderwood two to three times a day. Milt taught at Spencerport High School for many years. Hilton Holiday Celebration on Main Street and Tree Lighting on December 10

Holiday festivities are coming to the village of Hilton. The annual Holiday Celebration on Main Street will be held Saturday, December 10, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. All holiday activities will take place on Main Street this year.

The event will feature live music, a dance recital by La Danse, and visits with Santa. There will also be an Elf Trek Scavenger Hunt with prizes, caroling, Kids Zone, giveaways, wagon rides and more. The event will conclude with the Annual Tree Lighting at the Community Center Gazebo, 59 Henry Street.

Food will be available to purchase from Main Street businesses as well as the Braided Acres food truck.

All are invited to help HiltonParma Recreation spread holiday cheer through the village and make this a Hilton tradition. All activities are free except for items for purchase from local businesses.

Parma Hilton Historical Society presentation

Parma Hilton Historical Society is hosting a presentation on the Hamlin CCC Camp during its meeting on December 12, 7 p.m., at the Parma Town Hall, 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road.

Hamlin Beach State Park was the site of a CCC Camp in the 1930s and a German POW Camp in WWII. Ed Evans will give a presentation on the latest updates on the camp archeology and the former residents he has met along the way.

SGNY welcomes Redeemed Trio for concert

Southern Gospel New York (SGNY) is bringing Redeemed Trio to the Rochester/Spencerport area for the first time. The concert will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 10, at Grace Church of the Nazarene, 2924 Union Street South, Rochester. There will be a cookie and coffee reception following the concert.

Redeemed Trio is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and travels throughout the country ministering at churches, theaters, fairs, theme parks, and special events. Started 13 years ago by baritone Gary Bayes, the group also includes lead Barney McFadden, and tenor Dale Boreing.

No tickets are needed, but a $15 donation will be received at the door to help cover the group’s ministry and expenses. Those 19 years and under are admitted free. All are invited to come out and celebrate Christmas with SGNY and Redeemed Trio.

Free 2023 Erie Canalway calendar now available

The public is invited to pick up a free 2023 Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor calendar at selected libraries and visitor centers throughout the National Heritage Corridor. The calendar, which was released December 1, features winning images from this year’s Erie Canalway photo contest.

“The Erie Canal transformed New York and the Nation and continues to contribute to the economy and sense of place of communities along it today,” said Bob Radliff, Erie Canalway Executive Director. “The calendar serves as a reminder to celebrate,

preserve, and enjoy this incredible place all year long.”

Calendars will be available on a first-come, firstserved basis, thanks to support from the NYS Canal Corporation and the National Park Service.

Town of Ogden to hold first annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony

The Town of Ogden will hold its first annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday, December 9, at the Ogden Town Hall, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport.

Residents should arrive around 6 p.m. for hot chocolate and candy canes. At 6:15 p.m., a group of students and

teachers from Spencerport Central School District will lead attendees in singing Christmas carols. The event will conclude with the inaugural tree lighting around 6:30 p.m.

Winter clothing drive announced

First Congregational Church - UCC Spencerport is engaged in an ongoing effort to support the needs of students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Rochester Academy Charter School (RACS), located at 310 Hinchey Road. RACS is a free K-12 charter school with students from all over Monroe County. It boasts a high school graduation rate of 94%.

Heather Eysaman, Elementary School Principal, indicates many of the children attending this school do not have appropriate winter wear for our cold Rochester winters.

In response to this need, First Congregational Church is holding a community-wide collection of warm winter gear for the children. This includes new or gently used coats, jackets, hats, gloves, scarves, and boots in children’s sizes 6 to 16.

Local businessman Mike Montecalvo, owner of Lamont Awards & Apparel, responded to the church’s plea and donated 100 pairs of children’s mittens. Mike acknowledged there are so many needs in the community this time of year and he was happy to support the endeavor.

Additionally, through the efforts of Brodner Equipment, The Davison Foundation donated $2,500 to support the effort. Ahrens Benefits Co., Cellura Dental, and Waste Management have also made donations.

Residents of Spencerport and neighboring communities are asked to consider this project when evaluating their holiday donations. Collection boxes are located at the following businesses in the Spencerport area:

CCE Monroe offering Battery Operated Tools Workshop

To promote the transition from gas to battery powered tools, Cornell Cooperative Extension Monroe County (CCE Monroe) is offering a workshop featuring a short film with interviews of three different professionals in the landscaping industry and a presentation led by Antonius “TeJay” Chess Jr., CCE Monroe’s Natural Resources Educator. Cornell University, the University of Rochester, and R.M. Landscaping have joined efforts to create this informative workshop that explains the upfront cost, user friendliness, short-term and long-term results, and mechanical differences between gas- and battery-powered equipment.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Wegman Lodge, Zoo Road, Rochester.

Local equipment dealers will be on site to provide further information, lead educational sessions on topics such as autonomous mowers, and will be available to answer any questions attendees may have.

I was recently invited to watch a National Geographic documentary about the pandemic shown at the Dryden Theatre in Rochester. It is entitled, The First Wave, a film by Matthew Heineman (US 2021, 93 min.) Here is the synopsis that was shared with me:

Given remarkable access to a New York City hospital from March to June, 2020, director Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land, A Private War) documents the first four months the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States. Combining up-close footage of nurses and doctors battling the disease in intensive care and emergency rooms, and interviews with those workers and family members of victims, this truly unforgettable film provides a visceral account of the physical, emotional and social work involved with saving lives and losing lives in such an extraordinary situation. The First Wave shows the world the reality of crisis care from the perspective of those in its midst that will certainly leave a lasting impression.

Since editing and publishing an anthology, Navigating the Pandemic: Stories of Hope and Resilience, about those very same four months of 2020, I was extremely interested in this film.

The First Wave lived up to everything promised in the synopsis: it honestly, brutally honestly, gave a visceral account of the physical, emotional and social work involved with saving lives and losing lives in early 2020 in NYC. In fact, while my personal pandemic experience was more of an inconvenience than a trauma, watching this film was painful to the point of making me feel guilty for how little I suffered. It reminded me of my emotional response to walking through the Holocaust Museum or the 9/11 Museum. It filled me with grief. And I kept thinking about how the stories documented in the film were a tiny fraction of the stories of pandemic loss and suffering. Now I am asking you to reflect on your pandemic experience and share some of your thoughts. I am inviting our whole community to participate in a unique writing project, a poetry challenge, by submitting lines describing how you’ve been affected by the pandemic.

•Tillman, Thomas, of Albion, age 69, died November 21, 2022 in the Martin Linsin Hospice Residence following a short illness. He was born May 5, 1953 in Rochester to William and Helen (Elenski) Tillman and was a lifetime resident of this area. Tom was a co-owner of Tillman’s Village Inn, and was also an accomplished golfer having belonged to the Stafford Country Club for over 20 years. He also was an avid billiard enthusiast. What is this thing that has happened to us?

It’s a virus, yes. In and of itself it holds no moral brief. But it is definitely more than a virus. Some believe it’s God’s way of bringing us to our senses. Others that it’s a Chinese conspiracy to take over the world.

Whatever it is, coronavirus has made the mighty kneel and brought the world to a halt like nothing else could. Our minds are still racing back and forth, longing for a return to “normality,” trying to stitch our future to our past and refusing to acknowledge the rupture. But the rupture exists. And in the midst of this terrible despair, it offers us a chance to rethink the doomsday machine we have built for ourselves. Nothing could be worse than a return to normality. Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.

We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.

Churchville-Chili’s Varsity Vocals to perform holiday concerts

Churchville-Chili High School has six vocal ensembles for students to sing in. Three meet during the school day and Varsity Vocals is one of the three that meet after school. Varsity Vocals is a select ensemble featuring nine students. On Tuesday afternoons, they can be found rehearsing songs from the classical, contemporary, jazz, and musical theater genre – all unaccompanied by instruments other than their own voices.

In years past, the group has sung for Chamber of Commerce luncheons, produced CDs, as well as caroled through Chili-Paul Wegmans. Additionally over the years they have been hired to

sing at private events such as holiday parties.

Varsity Vocals is excited to return to the Cobblestone Hall on Saturday, December 17, at 1 p.m. to spread some holiday cheer. The group will be singing in the aisles of Wegmans the night before, Friday December 16, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Their winter concert will be at the C-C Performing Arts Center, 5786 Buffalo Road on Thursday, December 22, at 7 p.m.

Holly Trolley Rides at the NY Museum of Transportation

Continuing its holiday tradition, the New York Museum of Transportation in Rush will welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus on Sundays December 11 and 18. They’re eager to meet the kids, pose for pictures, and join them on the museum’s trolley ride. Holiday decorations, complimentary cookies and hot chocolate, and the fondly-remembered Midtown Plaza Monorail will add to the fun in this unique celebration of the holidays.

Sweden highway department moves to winter operations

The Sweden highway department will do its last leaf collection on Friday, December 9. Leaves in the town outside of the village should be raked to the edge of the road (not in ditches) by Thursday, December 8. There will not be another brush pick up until the spring.

Jumping for joy

Village Elementary School students are jumping for joy because they have almost reached their fundraising goal in the Kids Heart Challenge for the American Heart Association. So far, jumpers have raised 92 percent of their goal of $7,000…that’s $6,926.27. Students have until December 14 to collect donations.

Nominees must be residents of the Village of Brockport, Town of Sweden or Town of Clarkson. Individuals and organizations may submit nominations. Self-nominations are acceptable.

In 2012 the three municipalities establishedthe Monika W. Andrews Creative Volunteer Leadership Award as a memorial to the late Brockport resident. Its rules require that the award be given annually to one or more persons “who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in volunteer work by undertaking important innovative activities or creating significant new ways to serve the greater Brockport community”. A trust fund has been established to provide cash awards for the winners.

The winners will be selected by a committee composed of one member appointed by each of the municipal boards. Physical education teacher Shannon Ingles has headed up the Kids Heart Challenge, formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart, for over 20 years. Village Elementary has participated for 38 years. “We kicked off our fitness unit in early November and the challenge is the culmination,” she said. Students learn about cardiovascular endurance and heart health. For the challenge, students can jump rope, jump on trampolines, hula hoop and use pogo sticks. Collecting donations is optional.

Brockport HS sends two students to perform with NYSSMA Conference All-State ensembles

Two Brockport High School juniors have been selected to perform with NYSSMA Conference AllState ensembles.

Junior Jason Kleehammer was selected as a NYSSMA Conference All-State Symphony Orchestra member in the Violin 1 section. This NYSSMA ensemble is highly selective and comprised of the finest musicians from all over New York State. Jason

is a member of the Brockport High School’s String Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra. Jason has performed as a member of the Hochstein Philharmonic and the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra. He is a student of Joe Goehle and Shannon Nance and is the son of Diahn and Larry Kleehammer of Spencerport. Jason will perform with the All-State Symphony Orchestra the morning of Sunday, December 4, at Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theatre after three days of rehearsal with the entire group. Auditions for selection in the honors ensembles were held in the spring of 2022 at Webster Thomas High School.

This NYSSMA ensemble is highly selective as well, and she is one of three on her part selected from across the entire state. Phoebe is a member of the Brockport High School Choir, Brockport High School Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and MadVocals. Phoebe is a student of Joe Goehle and Liz Banner and is the daughter of Bruce and Sarah Ha of Brockport. Phoebe will perform with the vocal jazz ensemble, consisting of 24 singers and a trio, on the evening of Saturday, December 3, at The Theatre at Innovation Square after three days of rehearsal with the entire group. The Town of Hamlin is seeking applicants for an open position on the Board of Assessment Review. Some knowledge of property valuation in the Town is preferable, but not required. Middle School continues

Launched in 2016, Churchville-Chili Middle School’s career preparation program Career Connections has become an integral learning experience for curious fifth and sixth graders as they begin to consider their future goals and plans. Thanks to the participation of many professionals and experts from local businesses, organizations, and educational centers, the program has introduced hundreds of students to scores of potential career paths.

The program has been organized and guided by Enrichment Specialists Patti Saucke, Andrea Lynch, and Stephanie Ricci. It features hands-on activities with experts in diverse fields, from architecture and theatre to computer programming, advanced manufacturing, and robotics. Students participate in several different workshops based on their interests. It is often their first, and most memorable, introduction to the exciting variety of career options. Lynch said, “One of our eighth graders walked by a workshop the other day and immediately recognized it. He stopped to tell us that Career Connections was his favorite day of sixth grade.”

“Presenters sometimes don’t realize the immense impact they are having on our students,” she said. “Like the student who said after a workshop, ‘Thank you for introducing me to my perfect career that I didn’t know even existed.’ How awesome is that?”

Said Lynch, “Research has shown that the earlier we start exposing students to career pathways, the better chance we have of helping students to not only see relevance with what they are learning in

school, but also helping them to understand the possibilities for career pathways as they move up into the high school.”

As students progress, the district’s schools continue to provide opportunities and support, like Grades 7-8 Middle School trips to the Career and Technical Education Center at WEMOCO, Ninth Grade Academy Career Day (that brings professionals in from all over the community to speak directly with students), and many more targeted college and career-oriented events, clubs, and formal Career Counseling at the Senior High School.

“The past year has been challenging for the Career Connections program,” said Saucke. “Professionals at local companies and organizations are focused on core business. Their time is at a premium. We understand that. The amazing folks who find the time to work with us to support our students are really heroes.”

Hawley responds to alleged nursing home neglect at The Villages of Orleans

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia) spoke on December 1 about a recently-filed lawsuit against The Villages of Orleans Health and Rehabilitation Center, a nursing home in Albion, by Attorney General Letitia James. “The Villages’’ has been accused of financial fraud that has caused significant harm and neglect to its residents. This lawsuit has brought to attention companies that take advantage of New York state’s Medicaid program, and the need for better oversight on hospice care facilities.
