Seymour Library celebrates Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day by Kristina Gabalski

Joe Bullis sits in his new motorized scooter flanked by Ken Robertson, Vice-President of the Hilton Lions Club, and Mayor Joe Lee, President of the Hilton Lions Club. The scooter was donated by the Lions Club with the help of several people in the community. Joe Bullis is a well-known Hiltonite; he sold the morning newspaper at the corner of South Avenue and Main Street for over 20 years. Joe recently retired from that job and now will be able to enjoy traveling around the village in his new vehicle. Photo by Walter Horylev.

The last Monday in January is designated as Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day in honor of the air-filled bubbly packing material, and Natalie Burch, Children’s Services Librarian at Seymour Library in Brockport, said she decided the library should host a Bubble Wrap Dance Party in honor of the event. “I thought it would be fun,” she explained. A number of young community residents thought the same and joined Burch for the party Monday evening, January 29, at the library. Burch taped rolls of Bubble Wrap to the floor and young participants enjoyed running, stomping and rolling over it, as well as puncturing the air pockets with their fingers, while fun music played in the background. Sean Paul of Brockport brought his family. “My nine-year-old-son heard about the Bubble Wrap party and wanted to bring a friend ... they had a ‘date’ and went out to dinner first,” Paul said. According to holidayinsights.com, Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day had its start at a radio station in Bloomington, Indiana, after Bubble Wrap popping was accidentally broadcast over the air while a shipment of new microphones was being unwrapped and set up. Sealedair.com, the website of the company which makes Bubble Wrap, says the packing material was invented more than 60 years ago as a new style of wall covering. The Bubble Wrap wallpaper never caught on, but its inventors realized the light-weight material had insulating properties and it was first used as greenhouse insulation before becoming packing material.

Participants in the first Bubble Wrap Dance Party at Seymour Library in Brockport enjoyed making some noise January 29. Photo by K. Gabalski. “We know and love that you have a special relationship with Bubble Wrap,” the website states, whether you are using it for packaging or, “popping it for stress relief.” This was the first year Seymour Library has hosted a Bubble Wrap Appreciation event and Library Director Carl Gouveia says libraries across the state are seeing rising attendance at their programs. “From date nights for parents and their children to a Book Club at The Stoneyard, or from Teen Improv to tonight’s program, my staff try to meet these demands by developing unique programming experiences - sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t,” Gouveia says. “If one of these programs attracts someone who might not otherwise visit the library, I would consider it to be an added benefit.”

The Lodge was made possible by grants from NYS Parks and Recreation and Senator Robert Ortt. Look for a grand opening celebration to be held in the spring.

Eddie Money promotes his new musical by Karen Fien Record Archive, one of the supporters of “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Eddie Money Musical,” hosted a meet and greet with Eddie Money on Monday, January 29 at 6 p.m. The crowd of about 100 fans were treated to a 20 minute interview with Eddie Money by Dino Kay from radio station Fickle 93.3 in the Backroom Lounge. Money entertained the crowd with his jokes and stories, and participated in a brief question and answer session following the interview. He greeted each person, had a picture taken and autographed memorabilia. Later Monday evening, the cast performed a Preview Showcase at the University Preparatory Charter School in Rochester for the media and friends. “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Eddie Money Musical” starts in the 1990’s and goes back in time throughout Money’s life and career showcasing his rock ‘n roll hits and his new songs written specifically for the musical. Rochester Association of Performing Arts (RAPA) is proud to have been chosen for the National Kick Off of this musical. Money said about the cast, “The talent in the Rochester area is remarkable. I am so impressed with this cast.” One of the cast members is a young man from Brockport. Peter Raimondo, a 2013 graduate from Brockport High School, performed in plays while in high school. He attended Niagara University and graduated in 2017 with a degree in Theatre Performance; while at Niagara he performed in the production “The Pajama Game.” Since graduation he has been seen on stage with RAPA in the production of “Annie” and “Meet Me In St. Louis” at the Lyric Theatre in Rochester. He is part of the ensemble and plays other bit parts, including the orderly attending to Eddie Money when he was in the hospital. Raimondo says, “I am excited to be working on this production. Rochester has a lot of talented and enthusiastic people with a true passion for theatre. And for me to be just out of school and to have the opportunity to work with a rock legend like Eddie Money is especially exciting.” To read more about “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Eddie Money Musical” look for the full story in the Community Link inserted in this week’s edition of the Suburban News and Hamlin Clarkson Herald.

The Antara Winds travel “Across the Americas” The Antara Winds, the resident wind ensemble of the Hochstein School of Music and Dance, will appear in concert at The College at Brockport on Friday, February 16. Founded in 1982, the Antara Winds, comprised of all women who are educators and professional musicians, have appeared regularly on “Live from Hochstein” and have performed extensively throughout the greater Rochester area. In addition to presenting traditional repertoire for woodwind quintet, the Antara Winds delight in bringing audiences the music of contemporary composers. The members of the ensemble are Diane Smith, flute; Judith Ricker, oboe; Margaret Quackenbush, clarinet; Nikolette LaBonte, horn; and Blaire Koerner, bassoon. According to Quackenbush, their program, “Across the Americas,” is designed to “whisk the concertgoer around the globe, hearing music influenced by the composers’ homelands or, in Antonin Dvorák’s case, his temporary home.” Dvorák spent three years in the United States as the director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York; it was during a vacation in rural Iowa that the beloved “String Quartet No. 12 in F major,” Op. 96, was written. Also known as the “American” String Quartet, it has been transcribed for a variety of musical ensembles and is, along with the “New World” Symphony and perhaps a handful of the Slavonic Dances, the only Dvorák music that many music-lovers have ever learned to recognize. Arguably the most renowned tango musician in the world, one of Argentine-born Astor Piazzolla’s most popular works, “Libertango,” has been arranged for various instruments and combinations, including wind ensemble. In the composer’s own words, “‘Libertango’ stands for the freedom which I allow for my musicians. Their limits are defined solely by the extent of their own capabilities and not through any exterior pressure.” The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, on the Brockport campus. Tickets are $17/general, $12/seniors, alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students. They are available online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 395-2787, or at the Tower Fine Arts Center box office. Provided information

Wright, Regan double-doubles pace Eagles by Warren Kozireski Senior captain Lyndsay Wright and junior captain Jenna Regan each recorded a double-double to lead Kendall to a 49-37 victory over Rochester Prep in girl’s basketball. An early Eagles lead was erased by a 16-4 run by the Tigers, but Kendall ended the first half increased defensive pressure which turned into four straight field goals on a put-back from Regan, and bank-shot by Taylor ReQua and jumper from Kaitlyn Gregory and Wright scoring on an inbounds play to retake the lead. The Eagles had their highest scoring quarter of the season in the third with 18 points as ReQua scored while Wright and Regan added four points each.

Rochester re used a 9-0 run in the fourth to close to within eight in the waning minutes, but Regan and ReQua hit consecutive lay-ups to end the threat. “It was an important win,” Kendall head coach Jeff Parizek said. “We stepped up the defensive pressure after the first quarter and it worked for us.” Wright hauled down 16 rebounds to go with her 12 points while Regan scored 12 points with ten rebounds. ReQua led all scorers with 13 points with five steals and seven boards with sophomore Brittney Marks had nine steals. The Eagles won their fifth game of the season and hope to earn a home Section V playoff game after their six remaining regular season games.

Mundt registers double-double in Rangers loss by Warren Kozireski Senior Noah Mundt scored a team-high 13 points and added 12 rebounds, but Spencerport could not get their offense in sync in a 56-45 loss to Webster-Thomas in boy’s basketball. The Titans hit four of their first five three-point attempts, but the Rangers Malcom McCollough kept the game close with a put-back, a steal and two lay-ups sandwiching a trey from Josh Reding. A one-point Titans lead at the end of the first quarter became five points at halftime as the Rangers got a threepointer by Evan Clarke and a lay-up from Ben Reding for

their only points of the period. A pair of put-backs and a free throw by Mundt along with two treys by Clarke and a lay-up by JJ Jenkins got the Rangers to trailing 36-33 after three quarters, but they could not find another field goal until halfway through the fourth as the Titans built the lead to ten. In addition to Mundt, Clarke was in double-figures with 11 points, McCollough had six points, six rebounds and two steals and both Josh Reding and Alton Jones Jr. each added five points. The Rangers shot just four-of-ten from the free throw line as they fell to 6-8 on the season.

Fourth-ranked Rangers romp by Warren Kozireski Dom Vinci, Mason Wersinger and Dom Ferranti each registered major decisions to lead Spencerport wrestling to a 39-23 victory over host Brockport. Vinci led his 99 lb. bout 7-1 after two periods before turning it on in the third with two takedowns, one near-fall and an escape in his 15-5 win. Wersinger, ranked number one in the region at 138 lb. by armdrag.com, finished off his major decision with four third period takedowns in a 17-6 victory. And Ferranti registered three takedowns in each of the first two periods to take his 152 lb. bout 14-5. Elliott Cherniss began the match with a first period takedown and third period escape in his 3-1 decision at 220 lb. Tyler Mitchell had at least four points in each period of his workmanlike 13-8 decision at 132 lb. And Justin Fargnoli broke a 2-2 tie in his 182 lb. match with a third period escape and takedown to earn a 5-3 win.

Comments

Ryan Cottom (285 lb.), Carlos Vargas (160 lb.) and Dexter Craig (170 lb.) all won via forfeit for the Rangers. For the Blue Devils, senior Cody Enders registered his 100th career pin taking just 26 seconds at 120 lb. and Jagger Kachmaryk finished the match with a pin in 3:32 at 195 lb. Senior Tyler Daly ended his home high school wrestling career with a 15-2 major decision at 113 lb. Classmate Troy Ferris (145 lb.) also finished on a high note with a 12-4 major decision thanks to a six-point third period. And Ryan Daly used a third period escape to eke out a 3-2 decision at 106 lb.

Thank you from Cartons for Christmas Through the Cartons For Christmas project, our community was able to help 117 local families (456 people) this year. We delivered 9,300 items of food, gift cards and toys for young children. We thank our supporters - Spencerport Federal Credit Union, Fowler’s Canaltown Wine & Spirits and Howard Hanna Realtors - for being early drop-off locations, Spencerport Tops Market for donating gift cards and lending shopping carts, Colby Homestead Farms for providing potatoes, Grant Wolfe, Samaritan Harvest and Krehers Farm Fresh Eggs for the eggs, Spencerport schools and churches for the food drives, and Victory Packaging in Liverpool for the boxes. We thank the many individuals who donate turkeys, food, gift cards and money. We are grateful to the 200+ volunteers who unload food donations, check for expired food, sort, count, pack, load cars and deliver food all within 24 hours. Lots of kids were involved: Spencerport High School Student Government (Katie Wyant) toy shopping and wrapping, Cosgrove Service Club (Erin Bell and John Deserto) expired food check, sort and count, G.S. Troop 60164 (Beth Nash) grocery shopping and deliveries, G.S. Troop 60869 (Crystal D’Anunzio) toy shopping and wrapping, B.S. Troop 165 (Bob McGreevy) packing and loading cars, Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department Explorers (Chris Damon) deliveries, St. John’s Teen Ministry (Barbara Lake) gift donations for young teens, Trinity Lutheran Youth Group (Betsey Riegle) sort and count. Vital to our success are the efforts of: Jim and Joann Grassi for the sorting tables process and Jim and his team for ‘managing the floor’ by organizing hundreds of boxes and getting them into the correct vehicles, Dick Gallagher, our outside man, Lynn Phillips our Category Expert and count auditor with assistance from Danielle Phillips, Ginny Mosher our scribe and along with Patty DeMarse our Meat Ladies, Transporters of food, toys and shop-

ping carts: Barb and Steve Hull, Greg Dorgan and Mike Bianchi, Alicia and Ted Saladyga, Bruce Kolb and Steve McCagg, Erin Khuns, Jim Downs, Munn School Staff (Jeanne Pacitto) for keeping order in packing, and Gates Volunteer Ambulance (Jeff Krywy, Spencerport Station), members of the Spencerport Lions and Spencerport Rotary Clubs, Knights of Columbus Council No. 7707. We tip our hats to our toy coordinator, Donna Granger, who spent many hours making sure all kids under age 16 received a toy or gift, our toy tree sponsors, Cathy Fowler, Ginny Swarthout, The Unique Shop and Nancy Bodhorn, and SFCU for their generosity and enthusiasm. Much thanks to all who selected the angels from the Toy Trees and bought and wrapped gifts. Donna appreciates her team of wrappers and organizers. We thank our financial backers - St. John the Evangelist Church, J. William Jewelers, Kiwanis Club of Spencerport, The Feltner Group, Barton’s Parkside Hots, First Congregational Church, Ogden Baptist Church, Hi-Qual Heating and Cooling, Inc., Spencerport Lions Club, Ferris Goodridge Unit No 330, Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce, Village Square Management, Spencerport Firemen’s Benevolent Assoc. Exempts, Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Barefoot Management, Inc., Jean A. Black, CPA, and the many individuals who donate so generously. We wish to thank our sponsors, the Ecumenical Council of Churches: St. John the Evangelist, First Congregational Church, United Methodist Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, Ogden Baptist Church, Ogden Presbyterian Church and Spencerport Wesleyan Church. None of this would be possible without the tremendous participation of the Spencerport community and for this we thank you all.

Maureen and Glenn Granger, Organizers Cartons for Christmas

Volunteers needed for Special Olympics Winter Games As a teacher and father of three young boys, I continue to look for ways to remain involved in athletics through coaching and supporting local athletes. As a coach of a Unified Sports team, I have seen firsthand how sports programs for those with disabilities can empower people who may not have another opportunity to build self-confidence and participate in team activities. This year, I am thrilled to announce that I am on the Winter Games Organizing Committee for the Special Olympics of New York. This year’s winter games will be held in Rochester, meaning all of us here in Monroe County will have a variety of opportunities to get involved. Founded in 1968, the Special Olympics provides those with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in activities that give them a chance to show their courage, develop physical fitness, and experience the joy of teamwork and unity. In June 1970, the very first New York State Summer Games were held right here in Rochester. Today, New York State has the largest Special Olympics program in the country and one of the largest in the world. This program is completely free for athletes to participate in, and depends heavily on volunteers. I look forward to continuing the strong tradition of generosity and teamwork that volunteers here in Monroe County have demonstrated in the past by encouraging individuals to get involved in this important cause. The Special Olympics organization depends on two types of volunteers. An individual or group can donate their time by performing various tasks for our athletes. These can include set up, athlete escorts, stagers, timers, scorekeeping, and more. The social volunteers can include individuals or groups who would like to cheer on our athletes. Fan stations are present at almost all events so you can make signs or banners that encourage athletes to give it their all. Athletes often travel far to participate, so their families cannot always be there to cheer them on. Please consider getting involved as a social or athlete volunteer. This year’s Winter Games will include alpine skiing and snowboarding, figure and speed skating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and floor hockey. The opening ceremonies will take place on February 23 and the games

Be a creative part of the Hilton Apple Fest tradition Maintaining a community tradition of creativity, the Hilton Apple Fest is holding a contest to select a logo for its 38th annual apple harvest celebration. This year’s winning logo will be embroidered, painted and printed on hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts and other handmade souvenirs to be available at this year’s festival, Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30. The winner will also receive $100 and a complementary sweatshirt featuring the chosen logo. Entries should emphasize the value of the Hilton Apple Fest to the artist as well as the entire community. Experienced festival patrons might be encouraged to envision their own unique Apple Fest memories in creating this year’s logo. The theme is up to your imagination - excessive detail is not necessary. Less detail generally works better due to the various sizes that are

needed. Multiple entries are encouraged, must be original creations, and cannot be protected by any previous copyright. Please, no clip art. Submit your logo design to Hilton Apple Fest Logo Contest; PO Box 1; Hilton, NY 14468, or e-mail to info@hiltonapplefest. org. Include your name address and phone number on a separate page. Submissions will be ranked and the top three selections will be submitted to the Apple Fest Board for the final selection. All submissions must be received no later than Monday, March 19. All entries become the property of Hilton Apple Fest. For more details about the 2018 Hilton Apple Fest Logo Contest and an archive of previous winning entries, visit hiltonapplefest.org.

Clyde Bianchi to be inducted into B-B Athletic Wall of Fame Byron-Bergen High School’s athletic department will recognize an alumnus who has demonstrated not only athletic achievement but also character, citizenship, success and leadership during and after their time at the school. The department is proud to announce that this honor will be awarded to Clyde Bianchi in a ceremony on February 9 at 6:15 p.m. during the scheduled JV and Varsity basketball games at the Jr./Sr. High School gymnasium. Clyde Bianchi. Provided photo. Bianchi, a 1987 graduate of the school, was an exceptional multisport athlete. He played on the varsity teams for basketball, baseball, and soccer, and was named to the Genesee Region All-Star Teams for all three sports during a stellar high school career. In 1985, a motor vehicle accident left the promising young athlete paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. His spirit and perseverance continued to propel Bianchi forward, however. He graduated with a Regents degree in math and art, and worked full time to pay for higher education at Genesee Community College and The College at Brockport where he earned his undergraduate degree in business, math and economics. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1997-2000, studying information technology. From 1994-96, Bianchi played professional basketball with the Rochester Wheels, winning the 3-on-3 Wheelchair Basketball Rochester Championship for all three years. He is also a professional power lifter, a billiards champion and plays football. Bianchi had a very successful career as a computer engineer, advancing to director of technology, a position he held for 10 years. Since 2013, he has been the CEO and president of the largest animal boarding facility in the Rochester area, Howlywood. Located in Bloomfield, the company is owned and operated by Bianchi and his family, including his wife and business partner Kelly. “Clyde Bianchi is an inspiring role model for our student athletes and for everyone at our school,” Athletic Director Rich Hannan said. “He set the bar on his life high and never compromised. He has always made sports and competitive principles an important part of his life and he has made significant contributions to his community. We are absolutely honored and proud to recognize his achievements, and add his name to our Athletic Wall of Fame.” Provided information

RWC Redhawks sweep in hoops by Warren Kozireski Roberts Wesleyan’s women shot a blistering 54 percent from the field in the first quarter to build a 19-point lead and never looked back in their 77-53 win and the men had a 20-point lead in the second half before sealing the game at the free throw line in their 75-72 win over Mercy. It was the Lucy Covley show for the women in first half as the senior made five three-pointers - four in the second quarter alone - as the Redhawks led by 23 at the half. “It’s definitely tough when you have the lead, but you can never play down to your competition; you have to continually run your offense and defense and work toward the next game,” Covley said. “In the second quarter I hit a couple in a row (three-pointers) and once you hit your first one you feel better and you’re shooting like you practiced - it felt good all day, so I’m happy.” Covley finished six-of-ten from behind the arc - three away from tying her team record. And sophomore Emily Miller registered her 11th double-double in 20 games this season with a dominant 18 rebounds and 17 points. Sophomore guard Sara Nady also scored in double-figures with 12 points to go with six assists as the women improved to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in East Coast Conference

play - good for third place with seven games remaining. The men’s contest was a back-and-forth affair with the game tied six times and ten lead changes in the first half alone. The Redhawks got four free throws from Justin Vaughan, a three-pointer by Isaiah Lewis (Churchville-Chili) and a lay-up by Brad Williams late in the first half to take a 41-32 lead. It was much the same to open the second half as Jean Toussaint had three points, Vaughan a three-pointer and Peyton McLaurin added two treys and a field goal to build their lead to 20 points. But a 12-2 run by Mercy cut that lead in half and Roberts couldn’t knock down a shot from the field over the final three minutes. Toussaint hit three-of-four from the line and Manny Joseph added another free throw over the final 68 seconds to secure their 14th win of the season. Vaughan finished with a game-high 14 points with Lewis (12), McLaurin (11) and Toussaint (10) all in double-figures. “It was a tough game, but we’ve been in those before so we knew how to close games,” Vaughan said. “My teammates keep filling me with confidence and encouragement and tell me to keep shooting, so it’s good to be around.”
