Seymour Library celebrates Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day by Kristina Gabalski

Joe Bullis sits in his new motorized scooter flanked by Ken Robertson, Vice-President of the Hilton Lions Club, and Mayor Joe Lee, President of the Hilton Lions Club. The scooter was donated by the Lions Club with the help of several people in the community. Joe Bullis is a well-known Hiltonite; he sold the morning newspaper at the corner of South Avenue and Main Street for over 20 years. Joe recently retired from that job and now will be able to enjoy traveling around the village in his new vehicle. Photo by Walter Horylev.

Spencerport High School hosts Evening of Jazz Don’t miss the 20th annual Spencerport High School Evening of Jazz on Saturday, February 10, 6:30 p.m. in the HS West Cafeteria, with performances by the Spencerport High School Jazz Ensemble, Spencerport High School Friday Jazz Band, Cosgrove Jazz Ensemble and the jazz ensembles from Fairport High School, Hilton High School and School of the Arts. Conrad Herwig, a Grammy-nominated trombonist, will make a special guest appearance. Tickets cost $13 for adults, $10 for students and senior citizens, and are available at the door or in advance at the HS Main Office, Ogden Farmers’ Library, and the Spencerport Federal Credit Union. The evening will also include desserts from Rachel’s Cookies and More, and a silent auction will also be offered. Provided information

The last Monday in January is designated as Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day in honor of the air-filled bubbly packing material, and Natalie Burch, Children’s Services Librarian at Seymour Library in Brockport, said she decided the library should host a Bubble Wrap Dance Party in honor of the event. “I thought it would be fun,” she explained. A number of young community residents thought the same and joined Burch for the party Monday evening, January 29, at the library. Burch taped rolls of Bubble Wrap to the floor and young participants enjoyed running, stomping and rolling over it, as well as puncturing the air pockets with their fingers, while fun music played in the background. Sean Paul of Brockport brought his family. “My nine-year-old-son heard about the Bubble Wrap party and wanted to bring a friend ... they had a ‘date’ and went out to dinner first,” Paul said. According to holidayinsights.com, Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day had its start at a radio station in Bloomington, Indiana, after Bubble Wrap popping was accidentally broadcast over the air while a shipment of new microphones was being unwrapped and set up. Sealedair.com, the website of the company which makes Bubble Wrap, says the packing material was invented more than 60 years ago as a new style of wall covering. The Bubble Wrap wallpaper never caught on, but its inventors realized the light-weight material had insulating properties and it was first used as greenhouse insulation before becoming packing material.

Participants in the first Bubble Wrap Dance Party at Seymour Library in Brockport enjoyed making some noise January 29. Photo by K. Gabalski. “We know and love that you have a special relationship with Bubble Wrap,” the website states, whether you are using it for packaging or, “popping it for stress relief.” This was the first year Seymour Library has hosted a Bubble Wrap Appreciation event and Library Director Carl Gouveia says libraries across the state are seeing rising attendance at their programs. “From date nights for parents and their children to a Book Club at The Stoneyard, or from Teen Improv to tonight’s program, my staff try to meet these demands by developing unique programming experiences - sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t,” Gouveia says. “If one of these programs attracts someone who might not otherwise visit the library, I would consider it to be an added benefit.”

Lodge at Sweden Town Park available for rental The new Lodge at the Sweden Town Park on Redman Road is now available for rental. The year-round facility can accommodate 99 persons indoors and another 50 on the covered portico. Amenities include a full kitchen, accessible restrooms and a gas fireplace. The Lodge was made possible by grants from NYS Parks and Recreation and Senator Robert Ortt. Look for a grand opening celebration to be held in the spring.

Sampling 15 soup varieties helps fund local senior groups About 120 hungry folks were looking forward to the soup tasting at the Sweden-Clarkson Recreation Center last Saturday, January 27. Listening to conversations on site, they weren’t disappointed. The event, which was sponsored by the Sweden Senior Association, Inc. (SSAI) and staffed by 40-member volunteers, raised funds for producing and donating quilts and sleeping bags (300 per year), dresses and knitwear to help those in need in Rochester area hospitals, battered women’s shelters, nursing homes and foreign countries. The Sweden Senior Singers, who perform at area locations, also benefited from the Souper Bowl proceeds. Who wouldn’t want to sample hot soup on a winter day? Many, many thanks to the following eateries who made it possible by each donating two gallons of their delicious signature soups for the occasion: Abe’s Restaurant, 58 Main BBQ & Brew, Lifetime Assistance Food Service, Brockport Diner, Golden Eagle Res-

taurant, Madeleine’s at Heritage Square, Coleens Kitchen, Grinds 122 Cafe, Millhouse Family Restaurant, Farmers Table/Partyka Farms, Java Junction, The Red Bird Cafe, Fazool’s Casual Italian Kitchen, Jimmy Z’s, Two Brothers Family Restaurant. Souper Bowl ticket holders each had one vote for their favorite soup. The top three winners were: #1 – Java Junction: Hungarian Mushroom Soup #2 – 58 Main BBQ & Brew: Tomato Tortellini Soup #3 – Farmer’s Table, Hamlin: Vegetable Beef Barley Soup. We are grateful to others that made donations to Souper Bowl I. They include: Walmart, Wegmans, Dunkin Donuts, Tim Horton’s, Kirby’s Farm Market, Bill Gray’s and the Elderberry Club. The Sweden-Clarkson Recreation staff were on hand to make the event run smoothly. This first annual Souper Bowl was coordinated by Andrea Perry, Chair of the Brockport Dresses for Girls Around

the World program. After the crowd cleared out and the soup pots and tables were cleaned, she said, “Without the hard-working volunteers, it would not have been possible. Bob and Betty Coopenberg were the ‘heart’ of the Souper Bowl; Joyce Henion headed the basket raffle and the very successful baked food sale; the quilters and knitters exhibited and sold their wares, with chorus music playing in the background - right across from the beautiful quilt raffle; and the “soup ladle dippers” were busy, while chatting with their customers during each lunchtime shift. Everyone was awesome!” The generosity of those who attended and the partnerships with restaurants, sponsors, and volunteers - all helped make SOUPER BOWL I an incredible success. On to 2019 for SOUPER BOWL II… Provided information

Brockport Rotary supports Homesteads for Hope Jenny Brongo accepts a check from Brockport Club president • Stencils • Styrofoam • Yarn • Tolewood • Paints Eileen Whitney. The club, along with several other local Rotary clubs, has chosen to support the project. The inspiring Brongo, along with her mother, created the project which is based on opportunities surrounding farming on a Manitou Road property purchased for the project. The inspiration was an autistic brother who faced many problems about being served, particularly as he grew older. Brongo gave an update to the group about Homesteads for Hope which she describes as a sustainable place where autistic youth and young adults can learn, work, live and grow. She spoke about the growing season last year and the major successful events they sponsored last fall. She also talked about her sponsors and current needs. The biggest need is for a Construction Manager/Foreman who would coordinate the building projects. She also needs mechanics and teachers to help with skills like crafts and sewing. Provided information.

Opinion/Comments Volunteers needed for Special Olympics Winter Games As a teacher and father of three young boys, I continue to look for ways to remain involved in athletics through coaching and supporting local athletes. As a coach of a Unified Sports team, I have seen firsthand how sports programs for those with disabilities can empower people who may not have another opportunity to build self-confidence and participate in team activities. This year, I am thrilled to announce that I am on the Winter Games Organizing Committee for the Special Olympics of New York. This year’s winter games will be held in Rochester, meaning all of us here in Monroe County will have a variety of opportunities to get involved. Founded in 1968, the Special Olympics provides those with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to participate in activities that give them a chance to show their courage, develop physical fitness, and experience the joy of teamwork and unity. In June 1970, the very first New York State Summer Games were held right here in Rochester. Today, New York State has the largest Special Olympics program in the country and one of the largest in the world. This program is completely free for athletes to participate in, and depends heavily on volunteers. I look forward to continuing the strong tradition of generosity and teamwork that volunteers here in Monroe County have demonstrated in the past by encouraging individuals to get involved in this important cause. The Special Olympics organization depends on two types of volunteers. An individual or group can donate their time by performing various tasks for our athletes. These can include set up, athlete escorts, stagers, timers, scorekeeping, and more. The social volunteers can include individuals or groups who would like to cheer on our athletes. Fan stations are present at almost all events so you can make signs or banners that encourage athletes to give it their all. Athletes often travel far to participate, so their families cannot always be there to cheer them on. Please consider getting involved as a social or athlete volunteer. This year’s Winter Games will include alpine skiing and snowboarding, figure and speed skating, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and floor hockey. The opening ceremonies will take place on February 23 and the games

begin on February 24 at 8 a.m. For more information on location of events and how you can get involved, please visit http://specialolympics-ny.org/ or contact me directly at monroe20@monroecounty.gov. I hope to see you there. Mike Zale Monroe County Legislator District 20

The Antara Winds travel “Across the Americas” The Antara Winds, the resident wind ensemble of the Hochstein School of Music and Dance, will appear in concert at The College at Brockport on Friday, February 16. Founded in 1982, the Antara Winds, comprised of all women who are educators and professional musicians, have appeared regularly on “Live from Hochstein” and have performed extensively throughout the greater Rochester area. In addition to presenting traditional repertoire for woodwind quintet, the Antara Winds delight in bringing audiences the music of contemporary composers. The members of the ensemble are Diane Smith, flute; Judith Ricker, oboe; Margaret Quackenbush, clarinet; Nikolette LaBonte, horn; and Blaire Koerner, bassoon. According to Quackenbush, their program, “Across the Americas,” is designed to “whisk the concertgoer around the globe, hearing music influenced by the composers’ homelands or, in Antonin Dvorák’s case, his temporary home.” Dvorák spent three years in the United States as the director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York; it was during a vacation in rural Iowa that the beloved “String Quartet No. 12 in F major,” Op. 96, was written. Also known as the “American” String Quartet, it has been transcribed for a variety of musical ensembles and is, along with the “New World” Symphony and perhaps a handful of the Slavonic Dances, the only Dvorák music that many music-lovers have ever learned to recognize. Arguably the most renowned tango musician in the world, one of Argentine-born Astor Piazzolla’s most popular works, “Libertango,” has been arranged for various instruments and combinations, including wind ensemble. In the composer’s own words, “‘Libertango’ stands for the freedom which I allow for my musicians. Their limits are defined solely by the extent of their own capabilities and not through any exterior pressure.”

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, on the Brockport campus. Tickets are $17/general, $12/seniors, alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students. They are available online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 395-2787, or at the Tower Fine Arts Center box office. Provided information

Brockport First Baptist Church will have a new pastor by Kristina Gabalski The year 2018 is bringing changes for the First Baptist Church on Main Street in Brockport. Reverend Joanne Gilbert-Cannon retired in mid-January after serving as the first female pastor in the history of the church. Rev. Gilbert-Cannon has lived in the Village of Brockport for 25 years, and served as pastor of the First Baptist Church for 10 years. Her husband is a high school teacher in the Brockport Central School district. She says she decided to retire due to personal reasons. Living in the village meant that Gilbert-Cannon could walk to work in good weather. “You do need a car,” she says, “for making visits to the hospital or making home visits.” During her decade of service, the congregation felt, “we made a lot of changes,” she says, including establishing a contemporary service which eventually became a blended service with a praise band as well as traditional organ for music. The congregation, “loves the organ,” she explains. “It is a pipe organ which was bought from the Eastman School of Music. It’s a gorgeous instrument.”

Other changes included television monitors in the sanctuary for PowerPoints and selected videos. Gilbert-Cannon describes the congregation of Brockport First Baptist as very socially active in the community. Members provide a free meal for families once each month, host a teen clothing closet, raised funds for Puerto Rican hurricane relief and support homeless children through the local schools, recently making an offering of personal hygiene products, which can be difficult for kids who are moving from place to place to obtain. “They also hold a spring concert for charity,” Rev.GilbertCannon says. She explains that additionally, the rich heritage of the church has always been important to the congregation. “Brockport is not a suburb,” she notes. “It is a rural area ... generations of families have stayed here ... people are loyal to certain traditions.” Rev. Gilbert-Cannon says her plans for the future include working as a substance abuse counselor. Currently, the church has an interim pastor. “The congregation is in the last phase of the calling process for a new pastor,” she says.

Girl Up is an international organization and campaign of the United Nations Foundation that advocates and raises money for adolescent girls’ education, health and safety in developing countries. Hundreds of girls in Upstate New York participate in Girl Up Clubs at their middle and high schools, which participate in education, fundraising, advocacy and community service. This spring, on Saturday, March 24, the annual Upstate New York Summit will be held at Pittsford Mendon High

School. There is an incredible line up of women and girls from across New York and the United States coming to speak on panels and host workshops. Their goal is to help attendees sharpen their leadership skills, and ultimately, show attendees that they are the generation of leaders we have been waiting for. The event is free, but students are asked to register online at the website: https://upstatenygirlup.wixsite.com/2018. Provided information

Record Archive, one of the supporters of “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Eddie Money Musical,” hosted a meet and greet with Eddie Money on Monday, January 29 at 6 p.m. The crowd of about 100 fans were treated to a 20 minute interview with Eddie Money by Dino Kay from radio station Fickle 93.3 in the Backroom Lounge. Money entertained the crowd with his jokes and stories, and participated in a brief question and answer session following the interview. He greeted each person, had a picture taken and autographed memorabilia. Later Monday evening, the cast performed a Preview Showcase at the University Preparatory Charter School in Rochester for the media and friends. “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Eddie Money Musical” starts in the 1990’s and goes back in time throughout Money’s life and career showcasing his rock ‘n roll hits and his new songs written specifically for the musical. Rochester Association of Performing Arts (RAPA) is proud to have been chosen for the National Kick Off of this musical. Money said about the cast, “The talent in the Rochester area is remarkable. I am so impressed with this cast.” One of the cast members is a young man from Brockport. Peter Raimondo, a 2013 graduate from Brockport High School, performed in plays while in high school. He attended Niagara University and graduated in 2017 with a degree in Theatre Performance; while at Niagara he performed in the production “The Pajama Game.” Since graduation he has been seen on stage with RAPA in the production of “Annie” and “Meet Me In St. Louis” at the Lyric Theatre in Rochester. He is part of the ensemble and plays other bit parts, including the orderly attending to Eddie Money when he was in the hospital. Raimondo says,

Eddie Money and Peter Raimondo. K. Fien photo. “I am excited to be working on this production. Rochester has a lot of talented and enthusiastic people with a true passion for theatre. And for me to be just out of school and to have the opportunity to work with a rock legend like Eddie Money is especially exciting.” To read more about “Two Tickets To Paradise - The Eddie Money Musical” look for the full story in the Community Link inserted in this week’s edition of the Suburban News and Hamlin Clarkson Herald.

Handwriting contest winners honored at Clarkson Academy by Doug Hickerson On January 28, the Clarkson Historical Society (CHS) conferred honors upon winning students in the organization’s 4th annual Handwriting Contest. The event took place in the restored historic Clarkson Academy located at Clarkson Corners. The contest is part of the CHS campaign to revive interest in cursive writing, which it sees disappearing from school curricula and from the American culture. The contest winners are: 4th & 5th Grade 1st Place - Alice Dickerson, Brockport Hill School 2nd Place - Andrew Martinez, Lake Ontario Baptist Academy 3rd Place - Candace Harris, Home Schooled Clarkson 6th, 7th, 8th Grade 1st Place - Cynthia Harris, Home Schooled Clarkson 2nd Place - Victor Martinez, Lake Ontario Baptist Academy 3rd Place - Emma Lenhard, Merton Williams School, Hilton 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Grade 1st Place - Kayleigh Rodell, Lake Ontario Baptist Academy 2nd Place - Claire Buck, Lake Ontario Baptist Academy 3rd Place - Emily Gol, Lake Ontario Baptist Academy

Mary Edwards, president of the Clarkson Historical Society, was pleased to see the increase in entries over the previous year, from 164 in six school districts to 207 in seven school districts this year. She also noted, “This is the first year for homeschooled entries and entries from Spencerport, which makes for more diversity.” Edwards and CHS members Leanna Hale and Pamela Mercer have organized the annual contests from the beginning. Judges for this year’s contest were: Terry Carbone, vice president of the Brockport Central School District Board of Education; David Gifaldi, formerly a 5th grade teacher in Oregon, now a Holley resident; and Chris Mazzarella, a retired Brockport Central School District 4th grade teacher. The local campaign is part of the “Campaign for Cursive” worldwide movement promoting cursive writing instruction in public schools, sponsored by the American Handwriting Analysis Foundation located in California. The foundation has designated January 23 as “National Handwriting Day.” That is the date of John Hancock’s birthday in 1737, the founding father known for his bold, embellished iconic signature on the Declaration of Independence. “Put your John Hancock there” became the expression for a person’s signature conveying his or her unique identity and affirmation on any formal document. And, advocates say, one’s own unique handwriting and signature appropriately conveys

Winners in the Clarkson Historical Society’s fourth annual handwriting contest were honored at the Clarkson Academy on January 28. Seated (l to r): Alice Dickerson, Cynthia Harris, Kayleigh Rodell. The Clarkson Historical Society has promoted cursive handwriting since 2014 when the first Brockport Hill School 4th graders made field trips to the Academy and were taught cursive. And, promotion

has included the annual workshops called Cursive Sundays being scheduled again for this spring. Handwriting will also be taught in the annual Summer Camp being planned for August. All activities are held in the Clarkson Academy.

Redhawks sweep in hoops by Warren Kozireski Roberts Wesleyan’s women shot a blistering 54 percent from the field in the first quarter to build a 19-point lead and never looked back in their 77-53 win and the men had a 20-point lead in the second half before sealing the game at the free throw line in their 75-72 win over Mercy. It was the Lucy Covley show for the women in first half as the senior made five three-pointers - four in the second quarter alone - as the Redhawks led by 23 at the half. “It’s definitely tough when you have the lead, but you can never play down to your competition; you have to continually run your offense and defense and work toward the next game,” Covley said. “In the second quarter I hit a couple in a row (three-pointers) and once you hit your first one you feel better and you’re shooting like you practiced - it felt good all day, so I’m happy.” Covley finished six-of-ten from behind the arc - three away from tying her team record. And sophomore Emily Miller registered her 11th double-double in 20 games this season with a dominant 18 rebounds and 17 points. Sophomore guard Sara Nady also scored in double-figures with 12 points to go with six assists as the women improved to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in East Coast Conference play - good for third place with seven games remaining. The men’s contest was a back-and-forth affair with the

game tied six times and ten lead changes in the first half alone. The Redhawks got four free throws from Justin Vaughan, a three-pointer by Isaiah Lewis (Churchville-Chili) and a lay-up by Brad Williams late in the first half to take a 41-32 lead. It was much the same to open the second half as Jean Toussaint had three points, Vaughan a three-pointer and Peyton McLaurin added two treys and a field goal to build their lead to 20 points. But a 12-2 run by Mercy cut that lead in half and Roberts couldn’t knock down a shot from the field over the final three minutes. Toussaint hit three-of-four from the line and Manny Joseph added another free throw over the final 68 seconds to secure their 14th win of the season. Vaughan finished with a game-high 14 points with Lewis (12), McLaurin (11) and Toussaint (10) all in double-figures. “It was a tough game, but we’ve been in those before so we knew how to close games,” Vaughan said. “My teammates keep filling me with confidence and encouragement and tell me to keep shooting, so it’s good to be around.”

Mundt registers double-double in Rangers loss by Warren Kozireski Senior Noah Mundt scored a team-high 13 points and added 12 rebounds, but Spencerport could not get their offense in sync in a 56-45 loss to Webster-Thomas in boy’s basketball. The Titans hit four of their first five three-point attempts, but the Rangers Malcom McCollough kept the game close with a put-back, a steal and two lay-ups sandwiching a trey from Josh Reding. A one-point Titans lead at the end of the first quarter became five points at halftime as the Rangers got a threepointer by Evan Clarke and a lay-up from Ben Reding for their only points of the period.

A pair of put-backs and a free throw by Mundt along with two treys by Clarke and a lay-up by JJ Jenkins got the Rangers to trailing 36-33 after three quarters, but they could not find another field goal until halfway through the fourth as the Titans built the lead to ten. In addition to Mundt, Clarke was in double-figures with 11 points, McCollough had six points, six rebounds and two steals and both Josh Reding and Alton Jones Jr. each added five points. The Rangers shot just four-of-ten from the free throw line as they fell to 6-8 on the season.

Wright, Regan double-doubles pace Eagles by Warren Kozireski Senior captain Lyndsay Wright and junior captain Jenna Regan each recorded a double-double to lead Kendall to a 49-37 victory over Rochester Prep in girl’s basketball. An early Eagles lead was erased by a 16-4 run by the Tigers, but Kendall ended the first half increased defensive pressure which turned into four straight field goals on a put-back from Regan, and bank-shot by Taylor ReQua and jumper from Kaitlyn Gregory and Wright scoring on an inbounds play to retake the lead. The Eagles had their highest scoring quarter of the season in the third with 18 points as ReQua scored while Wright and Regan added four points each.

Rochester re used a 9-0 run in the fourth to close to within eight in the waning minutes, but Regan and ReQua hit consecutive lay-ups to end the threat. “It was an important win,” Kendall head coach Jeff Parizek said. “We stepped up the defensive pressure after the first quarter and it worked for us.” Wright hauled down 16 rebounds to go with her 12 points while Regan scored 12 points with ten rebounds. ReQua led all scorers with 13 points with five steals and seven boards with sophomore Brittney Marks had nine steals. The Eagles won their fifth game of the season and hope to earn a home Section V playoff game after their six remaining regular season games.

Clyde Bianchi to be inducted into B-B Athletic Wall of Fame Byron-Bergen High School’s athletic department will recognize an alumnus who has demonstrated not only athletic achievement but also character, citizenship, success and leadership during and after their time at the school. The department is proud to announce that this honor will be awarded to Clyde Bianchi in a ceremony on February 9 at 6:15 p.m. during the scheduled JV and Varsity basketball games at Clyde Bianchi. Provided photo. the Jr./Sr. High School gymnasium. Bianchi, a 1987 graduate of the school, was an exceptional multisport athlete. He played on the varsity teams for basketball, baseball, and soccer, and was named to the Genesee Region All-Star Teams for all three sports during a stellar high school career. In 1985, a motor vehicle accident left the promising young athlete paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. His spirit and perseverance continued to propel Bianchi forward, however. He graduated with a Regents degree in math and art, and worked full time to pay for higher education at Genesee Community College and The College at Brockport where he earned his undergraduate degree in business, math and economics. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1997-2000, studying information technology. From 1994-96, Bianchi played professional basketball with the Rochester Wheels, winning the 3-on-3 Wheelchair Basketball Rochester Championship for all three years. He is also a professional power lifter, a billiards champion and plays football. Bianchi had a very successful career as a computer engineer, advancing to director of technology, a position he held for 10 years. Since 2013, he has been the CEO and president of the largest animal boarding facility in the Rochester area, Howlywood. Located in Bloomfield, the company is owned and operated by Bianchi and his family, including his wife and business partner Kelly. “Clyde Bianchi is an inspiring role model for our student athletes and for everyone at our school,” Athletic Director Rich Hannan said. “He set the bar on his life high and never compromised. He has always made sports and competitive principles an important part of his life and he has made significant contributions to his community. We are absolutely honored and proud to recognize his achievements, and add his name to our Athletic Wall of Fame.” Provided information
