Help for the Homeless

Students raise over $1,200 for Open Door Mission and Bethany House by spending the day in tents by Grace Griffee A group of local students got a taste of what it would be like if they were homeless - and it was their idea. Seven third through eighth graders who receive before and after school care at Ruth Blodgett’s Hilton home were bored one day when Blodgett challenged them to find a project that would help others. “The kids had a day off during Thanksgiving week and asked me what they

could do that would be fun,” said Blodgett. “Instead of waiting for people to amuse them, I told the children that they should be thinking of ways they can do for others.” Tanner Matthews, a sixth grader at Village Elementary School, and Cole Dean, a sixth grader at Quest Elementary School, came up with an idea for helping the homeless after Cole commented that people with a roof over their head and a car are probably better off than 95 percent of the world. Once the students decided that they

wanted to help the homeless, Christina Wessman, an eighth grader at Merton Williams Middle School, took the idea and ran with it, making lists of people to ask for donations and the supplies they would need. The group decided that they would spend a Saturday outside, no matter what the weather, living in tents with only a fire to keep warm. They gathered donations from family members, friends, teachers and local businesses, raising over $1,200 so far for two organizations that help homeless in the community – the Open Door Mission and Bethany House. The Open Door Mission, located on Plymouth Ave. in Rochester, provides overnight housing for men, community meals for men, women and children, and religious services. Bethany House in Rochester is a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality that provides emergency housing for women and women with children, and assistance to women with food, formula, diapers, clothing, household items, and personal hygiene products. “We watched a video about a tent city in Nashville, TN that was ruined by a flood,” said Logan Matthews, a third grader at Village Elementary School. “Some people were mad because they didn’t want it set up again near them.” The group borrowed tents and sleeping bags for their own tent city from Mandy and Paul Tramonto and Beth and Jon Jamison, family friends. While they could use the indoor bathroom, they had no access to electronics and spent the day, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., making forts, playing cards, listening to the radio, singing and playing

At lunchtime, they had a simple meal of Ramen noodles and rolls. “This was only a day, but it gave us an idea of what it is like to be homeless and how we are fortunate to have the things we have,” said Cole. Christina related the experience to Christmas when so many kids want expensive gifts and think they don’t have enough, putting things like flat screen TVs on their Christmas lists. “Homeless people hardly even have clothes,” she said. Blodgett, who has been babysitting some of the children since they were infants, said she’s hoping to do the event again next year. “Our goal was to raise $500 and the kids far surpassed that,” she said. “I’m very proud of them.”

Conservation Tree and Shrub Program releases 2015 species list Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District has released their Conservation Tree and Shrub species list for the spring of 2015. Offered for pre-order this year are more than 59 different species of bare-root conifers, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers and groundcovers, as well as seed mixes and other products used for conservation projects. Packages range in unit size and price, from a bundle of 10 plants for as low as $11, to bundles of 100 plants for an average cost of $84. New species this year include: American Hornbeam, Coralberry, Fraser Fir, Hackberry and Tulip Tree. The Conservation District has also updated their selection of multi-packs where homeowners can choose from 8 pre-packaged plant combinations that help accommodate a homeowner’s conservation needs. Rather than receiving a single pack of ten trees/shrubs com-

posed of one species, the multi-packs offer two plants in five different species; perfect for the suburban conservationist. Many of these multi-packs have been revamped this year with new species options. As always, species adapted to Monroe County site conditions have been selected to provide a variety of conservation uses. “Planting trees and shrubs is perhaps the most effective way for individuals to help keep our environment clean and green,” said District Director Kelly Emerick. “In addition to providing shade, privacy, wildlife habitat, borders, windbreaks and snow fences, trees provide many environmental benefits not visible to the eye. They work as filters to help protect drinking water, clean the air of pollutants, stabilize soil to prevent erosion, and reduce noise by acting as sound barriers. Trees can help cool your home in the summer, and break cold winds in the winter, helping to reduce energy use. They can even

add value to your property,” Emerick said. The Conservation Tree and Shrub Program is a preorder program with a deadline for ordering of March 10, 2015. The distribution of the plant material will occur at the Monroe County ecopark on April 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The remaining plant stock will be sold on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Those interested in the Conservation Tree and Shrub Program can find the order form and a full color catalog on the District’s website: www.monroecountyswcd.org or pick up an order form at town/village clerk’s offices within Monroe County. Contact the County Soil and Water Conservation District at (585)-753-7380, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Provided information

Where The Heart Is!

Sewing made special with gems and crystals by Kristina Gabalski Lucy Seitz’s talent for sewing and beading won her a blue ribbon at this fall’s Rochester Gem and Mineral Society’s Annual Show. The Spencerport resident says this was the second year she entered the competition and won this year for designing a silk jacket with garnets and Swarovski crystals. The gem and bead work was done on the front placket and pocket area of the jacket. “The lace appliques I embroidered on a sewing machine,” Lucy explains. “I hand applied the garnets and Swarovski crystals.” The Gem and Mineral Society Show was held on October 25 and 26 at the Rochester Armory and was attended by nearly two thousand people. Lucy won first prize from among 38 entries for both overall design and skill in applying the gemstones to the jacket. “We had to use beads or stones - a lot of talented people enter,” she says, however, jewelry could not be entered. Various artists utilize gems and beads in their work, Lucy notes. “There were weavers, woodworkers, quilters. There are separate categories for each club. I won from the bead guild. People who attend vote for the winners. “There were not a lot of garments,” Lucy continues, “there were in-laid wooden pieces, woven pieces and quilts.” Lucy says her jacket won the People’s Choice Award. She spent six hours on the lace and five-to-six days on the beading. “The sewing was the easy part,” she jokes. Each year there is a theme for the competition, and Lucy says this year’s was “Rock and Roll.” She incorporated the theme by way of the color she chose for her silk shantung jacket - which is eggplant or “deep purple.” Sewing is Lucy’s first love and she is an accomplished seamstress. “I mostly sew for people,” she says. She has operated Mana D’Oro for ten years and is currently a seamstress with “To Your Measure” making custom pants for women. She also makes decorator pillows and drapes. “I’ve been sewing since I was ten,” Lucy says. “I started beading 15 to 20 years ago and it has become more of a hobby. She also knits and says she typically spends 10 to 12 hours each day sewing. Lucy formerly owned a yarn shop in the Village of Spencerport called the Magic Needle on Union Street. She says the business closed in 1989. The jacket Lucy made for the Gem and Mineral Show is a stunning Asian-influenced evening jacket with a Mandarin collar, but she doesn’t have plans to wear it. “I needed something special for the show,” she says, and adds that now she will likely, “put it in the closet,” to store and preserve it.

Lucy Seitz, a Spencerport resident for 46 years, took home the Blue Ribbon for designing a silk jacket with garnets embroidered onto the front placket and pocket area. Lucy was awarded the first prize, among 38 entries, for both her overall design and skill in applying the gemstones to the jacket. Due to the dark tones of the silk jacket, the beaded details do not stand out. Provided photo.

The Genesee Play to Get Fit Program was created for third, fourth and fifth graders in the GLOW (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties) region to show how many minutes they spend engaged in physical activity outside of school. Children keep track through a specially designed “Play to Get Fit” calendar log. Walking, biking, running, skating, swimming, playing a sport, playing tag, playing on a swing set and other active, creative games are all eligible for active “credit.” However, video fitness games utilizing Wii or Xbox Kinect are not eligible. Wolcott Street School in Le Roy came out on top with a total of 108,011 minutes of physical activity outside of school. GCC Director of Health and Physical Education Becky Dziekan presented Physical Education Teacher Michael Humphrey with a plaque recognizing the school’s achievement. Each student participant also received a certificate. In addition, Dziekan recognized three students who recorded the highest amounts of physical activity among all 11 GLOW region participating school districts. They were: Joshua Zittel of Byron-Bergen (6,750 minutes), Tommy Condidorio of Le Roy (6,055 minutes), and Gabe Kahl of Warsaw (4,805 minutes). Provided information

“Spinning Tops” program scheduled for MorganManning House January 15 On Thursday, January 15, at Brockport’s Morgan-Manning House, Don Olney will present spinning tops from his collection of 7,000 tops from all over the world. Olney has been a spinning top collector for over 20 years. He brings selected tops to nursing homes, schools, churches, Scout meetings, adjusting his show to all ages. He will demonstrate and tell stories about tops in different cultures. Olney owned The Toycrafter in Rochester for about 35 years, making wooden toys including spinning tops. Currently, he and his wife run the Moving Wood Studio in Rochester, a home for all items they designed that involve various motions, such as spinning, sliding, rotating, popping, blinking, swinging, balancing. The program is sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society and begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street, Brockport. For information, phone the WMHS office at (585) 637-3645. January 22 is the back up date in case of inclement weather conditions. Provided information

Hilton students participate in a Tuba Christmas - It isn’t often that musicians get to deck out their tubas for the holidays, but that’s just what five Hilton students did when they participated in a Tuba Christmas concert at Hochstein School of Music and Dance, sponsored by the City of Rochester. Over 150 tuba players of all ages adorned their tubas with garland and Christmas lights and played holiday favorites. The concert was under the direction of Glenn Call, who has conducted a Tuba Christmas for 32 years, Casey Springstead and Jeremy Stoner. Drew Bateman, a fifth grader at Village Elementary School who comes from a family of musicians, said he decided to play the tuba because the band didn’t have a lot of them. This was his first year playing in a Tuba Christmas. Provided photo.

Every year, the grandchildren of Dr. Frank and Janet Langelotti participate in a “cousin’s day.” The grandchildren scattered down the East coast come to Spencerport to celebrate Christmas together and then have a day of bonding with each other and giving back to the community where their parents were raised. This year the cousins went door to door in a Hilton neighborhood, where their aunt and uncle live and collected food for the House of Mercy. They then went to a local Brockport diner for lunch, attended church with their grandparents, watched a movie and had dinner together. They said it is a great way to spend the holiday time with family. They look forward to this day every year and we kick it off with community service. Brockport Blue Devils Hilton Cadets tie by Warren Kozireski Hilton twice overcame one-goal deficits with Jake Palumbo netting the tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in the second period as the Cadets and Brockport skated to a 3-3 tie in high school hockey. “We have the potential to be really good, but we’re playing too inconsistent to be a factor,” Hilton head coach Chris Monfiletto said. “If we start taking care of the little things, we could be factor in Section V.” Palumbo gave Hilton a 1-0 lead at 9:13 of the first period when he pounded home a perfect pass from behind the net by Justin Allen. Todd Higgins also assisted on the play. Brockport tied the game 1-1 in the second period to begin a five goal outburst by both teams. Mitchell Henshaw’s point shot found the back of the net for his team leading sixth goal of the season with assists from Dylan Sharpe and Matt Roe on the power play tally. The Blue Devils took their first lead of the contest just 36 seconds later as Alex Harley converted a three-on-two break on a tap-in off a Sharpe shot. Defenseman Chevy Ioannone also assisted. Hilton tied it 2-2 at 5:29 of the second as Sam Sedia scored his first goal as a Cadet off passes from Hunter and Brenden Howell. On the next shift, Brockport again took a one-goal lead as Sharpe knocked in the rebound of a Henshaw shot 18 seconds later. But, at 13:34 of the second period, Mitch Palumbo won an offensive zone draw back to the right point. Higgins’ shot was stopped, but Jake Palumbo scored on the rebound for his team-high eighth goal and 17th point. Both teams combined for 20 shots over the final period plus overtime, but Brockport goaltender Riley Emmerson and Hilton’s Patrick Dennehy each preserved the point. “We’re there,” Brockport assistant coach Alan Barton said. “We’re still learning as a team, so I think we can surprise some teams later on.” Hilton entered the final week in December with a 4-21 record and in fifth place in Division II while the Blue Devils were 1-5-1 with a win over Aquinas in the season opener.

PROVIDING COMFORT Those faced with the imminent prospect of death often find great comfort from visits from family and friends. Any awkwardness that a visitor may feel is greatly outweighed by the benefit. With this in mind, allow yourself to sit at eye level, don’t be afraid to touch, and take your conversation cues from the dying person. Silence is fine since the mere presence of a caring visitor is sometimes all that is needed. At the same time, don’t contradict the patient who says that he or she is dying. Accept any emotion that may accompany the statement by empathizing and listening. Allow for talk about unfinished business, and never pass up an

opportunity to express love or say goodbye. When we experience the death of someone we love, a funeral service provides for the dignified and respectful care of our loved one and special tribute to his or her life. A funeral service also helps survivors face the reality of death, which is the first big step toward taking grief from the inside and allowing us to express it through mourning. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-3927100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.
