Stepping-stone season for Saints baseball

One season after making it to the Section V baseball semi-finals as the top seed in Class A1, Churchville-Chili made it to the Class A1 championship game before falling to Greece Athena. But their 17-6 season and multiple players returning for next season gives the Saints hope that this was just another stepping-stone on their way to the seventh Section V title in program history (1941, 1943, 1946, 1973, 1974, 2009).

“Like I said right from the first day of tryouts, we had a job to do; last year we lost in the semi-finals in a game we should have won and our job this year was to win a sectional title,” head coach and Class A1 Coach uglia said. “Unfortunately, today we fell a little short and didn’t play very well, but we have a good group coming back next year and right back at it.”

The Saints starting lineup in the championship game featured five seniors, four juniors and one sophomore. Their top three in the order were all juniors in shortstop Braeeina, center fielder Joshua Campbell and starting pitcher/first baseman Michael arker Farnham played left field while original first baseman, junior utney, came on in relief and pitched the final four innings allowing just one earned run while also driving in two of the Saints’ four runs with a clutch two-out, twoBI single in the third inning.

“I knew my team was down, so I just tried to get ahead of batters with a lot of first utney said. “It (the five-

Finishing 15-5 and earning the top seed in Class A1 for the second straight season, they defeated Greece Arcadia in the first round of the playoffs and Irondequoit in the semi-finals on a walk-off home run in extra innings by reina.

They will undoubtedly miss the senior

They will need to do it under a new leader as puglia said he is moving to Florida and will be resigning soon.

“Next year’s team is going to be better than this year’s team. The program is definitely growing,” puglia said. “The JV (junior varsity) team went 17-3 and a lot of good kids are coming up, so the program is very strong.”

“We’re definitely going to come back here next year,” putney said. “We’ll have some experience and some younger kids coming up and put a run for it. Next year, I think we’re going to win the whole thing.”

Community partnership brings advanced lifesaving technology to the Churchville area

A ceremony was held at the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday, May 25, to mark the LUCAS 3 chest compression device being put into service. Churchville Volunteer Fire Department Vice President Gary Johnson welcomed attendees to the event which featured the presentation of the device along with a demonstration of its use.

The Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System (LUCAS) provides safe and effective mechanical chest compressions to patients in cardiac arrest. It is mostly used in emergency medicine as an alternative to manual CPR because it provides guidelines-consistent compressions 2.1 inches deep at a rate of 102 per minute. It allows for uninterrupted compressions even through difficult transport conditions and eliminates the physical strain on the person performing CPR.

The delivery of high-quality CPR is vital for patient outcomes. The LUCAS device has been shown to create more blood flow to the brain both in humans and experimental studies compared to manual CPR.

Town of Sweden to reconstruct SCCC basketball courts

Twenty years ago, the Town of Sweden installed three outdoor basketball courts at the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center. The courts were funded in part by memorials in honor of former Sweden Supervisor Nat O. Lester, Jr. The basketball courts have been well-used but in recent years shifting in the pavement has caused the basketball hoops to lean.

The Town has decided to reconstruct the courts with some modifications to reflect the changing recreational interests of residents. One of the basketball courts will remain a basketball court, one will be converted into a tennis court and the third will be converted into three pickleball courts.

The Sweden Highway Department will perform some of the preliminary work and restoration. The Sweden Town Board has awarded a contract to Super Seal to apply acrylic surfacing and line the courts. Fencing will also be installed to keep activities separate. Reconstruction of the outdoor facility will take place late in the summer.

Provided information

In a simulation of a real time emergency, the Churchville Explorers first demonstrated manual CPR compressions to allow time to ready the LUCAS device then demonstrated the workings of the mechanical compressions performed by the device. Provided photos.

The Churchville Volunteer Fire Department used money from their memorial fund towards the purchase of the device. Families that donated to the memorial fund in a loved one’s name were invited to the ceremony. The other half of the funds came from the Churchville Lions Club, and were raised at a community chicken barbecue. Provided information

URMC forms Youth Advisory Board to promote health equity

The University of Rochester Medical Center’s Office of Health Equity Research (OHER) is inviting local high school students to join its Youth Advisory Board. Advisory board members will meet with URMC health equity researchers to provide insight into issues facing children and teens in the Greater Rochester area.

Youth advisory boards (YAB) can assist in identifying future research needs aimed at improving adolescent health and fostering a two-way exchange of ideas. Researchers value the contributions of youth members as community partners who provide a wealth of knowledge on health-related issues based on lived experiences.

YABs have become increasingly common, especially with major research institutions like the University of Rochester. Brown University implemented a YAB called Team 300 to study the effects of alcohol on young people nationwide. Harvard University also runs a YAB as part of its Making Caring Common Project, which focuses on moral issues and social challenges of young peer groups, such as bullying and exclusion.

Members of the URMC YAB will attend quarterly meetings with OHER

staff and a team of health equity investigators that conduct research. The board will review OHER research materials and discuss health equity projects that impact the community.

“We are excited to expand our research and make a greater impact on our community,” said Edith Williams, PhD, Founding Director of OHER.

“Young people experience issues like health inequity differently and can lend a unique perspective that adults do not have. Our youth advisory board is a fantastic way to center youth voice and gain a deeper understanding of the Rochester community.”

URMC OHER is looking to fill 15 seats on the Youth Advisory Board. To qualify, youth must:

•Be 14-17 years of age.

•Be willing to attend regular meetings (at least one per quarter).

•Enjoy working in a team environment.

•Be interested in community service and health equity.

The Office of Health Equity Research will pay Youth Advisory Board members $50 for each one-hour meeting.

Tent Sale in Hilton to support the Pappert family

Luke Pappert was an energetic, happy, kind, inquisitive little boy, always bouncing around and smiling. He loved the Army and wanted to be a soldier. He could often be found wearing his Army uniform and driving his tank around, with his little sister and his toy snake, Raindrop, as his sidekicks.

One of Luke’s other favorite things to do was fish. On September 12, 2020, six-year-old Luke was fishing with his dad, his grandfather, his six-year-old best friend, and his best friend’s father, when their boat was struck by another boater who was intoxicated and traveling at a high rate of speed.

This tragic accident took the life of Luke’s grandfather, Jim, and injured Luke, his father, and his best friend. Luke was left with a severe traumatic brain injury. He is unable to communicate and unable to move on his own.

Luke has always been a fighter and he never gives up. Believing that Luke’s story is not done, his family is fighting to bring Luke back and give him the life that he deserves. He is undergoing extensive treatment to try and wake up his brain, rebuild neurologic pathways, and create new neurologic pathways.

A multi-family tent sale will be held Thursday, June 8, through Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m.

to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 11, from 9 a.m.

to 2 p.m. at 32 Burritt Road, Hilton. The sale will be held rain or shine. No early birds, please. A wide variey of items will be for sale including home décor, household items, furniture, toys, vintage antiques, bicycles, jewelry, clothing (baby, child and adult), book (some very old), DVDs, VHS, games for PS2 and XBox360, and much more. Items will be half off on Sunday.

Luke has been undergoing extensive treatment since the accident.

For more on Luke’s story, go to https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/lukerickjimpappert2. Note that donations made to Caring Bridge do not go to the family. Monetary donations can be made directly to the family through the GoFundMe.com campaign “Help 3 generations of Papperts.”

The family is grateful to everyone who has contributed thus far through donations and bottle and can drives and thanks the community for their continuing support. Provided information and photos

Spencerport CSD makes two new appointments

The Spencerport Central School District has appointed Natalie Kirisits as the newest assistant principal for Spencerport High School and Marybeth Fortunato as the next Secondary Coordinator of Special Education for the middle and high schools. Both are filling open positions and will officially begin on July 1.

Ms. Kirisits has worked at Spencerport High School since 2017, as a reading specialist, coordinator of student and family engagement, and currently as a teacher on special assignment with the administrative team. Prior to 2017, she was a reading specialist for four years in the Wayne Central School District.

“We are very excited to have Ms. Kirisits appointed to this leadership role at the high school,”

Superintendent Kristin Swann said. “As a teacher on special assignment last year with the responsibilities of family engagement and working with our current junior class, she earned great admiration from all stakeholders. She is well-respected among her colleagues, and her leadership will be a great addition.”

Ms. Kirisits’ education and background include a Bachelor of Arts in inclusive childhood education; Masters of education degree as a literacy specialist; and the University of Rochester educational leadership program.

Marybeth Fortunato comes to Spencerport from Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District, where she has worked as a special education teacher since 2014. Prior to this position, she worked as a behavior support assistant for Wheatland Chili, and as a special education teacher for Mary Cariola Children’s Center.

Her education and background include a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education; Master of Arts in elementary special education and extended certification in 7-12 special education; and University of Rochester educational leadership program.

“The committee shared how impressed they were by Ms. Fortunato’s background in special education and her desire to put the needs of students above all else,” Superintendent Kristin Swann said. “Her collaborative approach and passion for special education will certainly benefit the teachers, students and families in our Spencerport community.”

Roberts Wesleyan holding open house to showcase adult and graduate programs

Roberts Wesleyan University will host an inperson adult and graduate open house at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, to highlight its adult and graduate degree offerings, including certificate and doctoral programs. Adult and graduate students currently account for more than half of the university’s recent student population and enrollment growth, with Roberts introducing new and streamlined degree opportunities over the past several years to help students balance academic pursuits with personal and professional commitments.

At the open house, prospective students will learn about program details in relevant areas of interest and have an opportunity to directly connect and network with faculty and staff who blend theory with applied practice to equip students with the latest skills and knowledge to make an immediate impact in the communities and employers they will serve. In addition to faculty, university alumni across a wide variety of industries will be on hand to answer questions and share firsthand insight about the graduate student experience, including perspectives on applying a Roberts education to professional pursuits.

“At Roberts, our goal is to help students find the best program to meet their educational and career goals,” said Andrew Gilbert, executive director of adult and graduate enrollment. “Going back to school to pursue an associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree may seem daunting, but we’ve found

that one of the best ways to be inspired is to attend the on-campus open house event, which serves as an information resource center, discussion forum and opportunity to explore what Roberts has to offer to support your goals.”

Intentionally designed for working professionals, many of the university’s adult and graduate degrees are offered in condensed eight-week terms and presented in the evenings or through online formats for greater flexibility and feasibility. The university recently launched two new adult and graduate degree offerings to help address those needs, an online associate in Biblical studies and a bachelor’s in business marketing that can be completed in approximately one year either online or hybrid.

In a report released last year from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, more than 39 million Americans have attended college but earned no degree or other credential. “For students who have started a degree but have not completed it, we hope that for some, Roberts will be the place where they can complete it,” Gilbert said.

Registration for the open house is required in advance and available online at https://go.roberts. edu/age-open-house-jun-2023. For more information about Roberts Wesleyan University, including its catalogue of adult and graduate program offerings, visit roberts.edu.

Northwood class chooses to reduce, recycle and reuse

Jennifer Sica’s fifth grade class at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton learned how to recycle, reuse items, and reduce what ends up in landfills during their ecology unit. Students researched ways they can reduce, reuse, and recycle in all areas of their daily lives, then created a project made with only recycled materials. Some students made helpful household items, like a bird feeder, table and chair, and others created games and decorative items. All the items were displayed in the cafeteria where students talked about what inspired their creation. The second part of the project was a fashion show during which students wore hand-me-downs and/or clothing purchased from used clothing stores. During the fashion show, students presented facts about the importance of reusing, recycling, and reducing waste. Shown wearing their recycled outfits are (l-r): front – Lena Beaumont, Lia Debay, Reagan Paolini, Marc Ferger, Dom Knauf, Leo Pino, Tatum VonBramer, Levi Zimmermann, Logan Steinebach, Kearsyn Boss, Mikaela Wawrzyniak, Amelia Easton, and Reese Paolini; back – Emma Carpino, Avery Anne, Bailey Barry, Avery Carusone, Gavin Conover, Cole Murphy, Connor Hibbard, and Chase Mangiavellano. Brockport Kiwanis Read Around the World

The Kiwanis Club of Brockport held its annual Read Around the World event at the Seymour Library on Saturday, May 20. Despite the rain, there was good attendance and the kids and families had a great time. Guest readers this year were Chief Mark Cuzzupoli of the Brockport Police Department, Brockport School Superintendent

Sean Bruno, and Club member Brigitte Duschen. All of the readers emphasized to the children the importance of reading and learning, as well as the importance of community and friendship. The Kiwanis Club is grateful to the staff of the Seymour Library for their planning, support and preparation, and to the Brockport Police Department for their support and participation. Provided information and photos.

TOPS Club, Inc. encourages meal planning and prepping for a healthier you

National Meal Prep Day, observed annually on June 9, brings awareness of why meal prepping is important to live a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that people who plan their meals had a better diet quality, better nutrition, and decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and more.

TOPS Club, Inc. (Take Off Pounds SensiblySM), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization, with a “Real People. Real Weight Loss.®” philosophy, is a proponent of planning ahead, curating food choices, and shopping wisely for groceries.

“Meal prepping is a great tool to help keep you on track,” said TOPS President Rick Danforth, who has maintained a 100-pound weight loss since 2003. “Having control over the ingredients and portions served is key to successful weight management.

“Meal planning and preparing ahead helps with avoiding junk food or foods high in fat,” he said. “After a day of work, childcare, running errands or whatever, it is tempting to stop at the drive-thru to make serving a meal easier and satisfy those hunger pains. But that’s not the healthiest way or the most successful way to get your weight management under control. Knowing what you will put on the table when it’s mealtime is a key strategy to avoid pitfalls.”

There are other benefits in meal prep as well including budgeting for what you need, saving time from running to the store at the last minute, rushing through preparations, and reducing stress by avoiding last minute decisions on what to eat.

TOPS recommends three different eating plans to assist in building a healthy lifestyle. They include an Exchange System,

which helps you watch portions and cut calories without feeling deprived. Food lists were developed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Diabetes Association.

Additionally, TOPS offers 28-day meal plans that take the guesswork out of meal planning and Food Exchange Cards to help keep portions and calories in check.

TOPS also recommends checking out the nutrition guide, My Plate, from the USDA. It emphasizes an eating plan heavy on fruits and vegetables, choosing whole grains, and proteins like lean poultry, fish, beans, and nuts.

Tips for preventing Medicare fraud

Fraud costs Medicare an estimated $60 billion per year. It costs Medicare beneficiaries time, stress, their medical identities, and potentially their health. It costs families, friends, and caregivers in worry and lost work when helping their loved ones recover from falling victim to Medicare fraud.

“Medicare fraud has a devastating impact on both beneficiaries and the Medicare program,” said Maria Alvarez, Executive Director, New York StateWide Senior Action Council (StateWide), the administrator of New York’s Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program. “We teach people how to avoid experiencing Medicare fraud. By preventing fraud from happening, this program helps individuals and protects the Medicare program for generations to come.”

Learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones by joining the SMP and its partners for Medicare Fraud Prevention Week, June 5-11. This observance starts on June 5, or “6-5,” because most people become eligible for Medicare when they turn 65 years old.

“We’re excited to teach people both about how to protect themselves from Medicare fraud and about the services that the Senior Medicare Patrol program offers,” added Alvarez. Everyone plays a part in the fight against fraud. During Medicare Fraud Prevention Week:

•Medicare beneficiaries can monitor their insurance statements to make sure products and services received match what is on the statements. They can request free My Health Care Trackers from StateWide by calling its toll-free Helpline at 1-800-333-4374 or visiting StateWide at www.nysenior. org.

•Caregivers can help by being on the lookout for items such as durable medical equipment (like boxes of knee braces) lying around the house that may have been shipped to the beneficiary without their or their doctor’s approval. They can

remind their client or loved one to never give out their Medicare number or other personal information over the phone.

•Families can help by talking to their loved ones about protecting their Medicare number just as they would a credit card number. They can help their loved ones create a Medicare.gov account to access their Medicare statements online or remind them to open and review them when they come in the mail. They can also register their phone number on “do not call” lists and go to optoutprescreen.com to opt out of mailings.

•Partners and professionals can help by sharing SMP information on social media, referring clients and consumers to the SMP, and inviting the SMP to speak during a shared event.

•Health care providers can help by talking to patients about health care-related scams such as those related to durable medical equipment and genetic testing schemes. They can remind them that products and services should only be ordered by physicians they regularly see. Needed medical items should never be ordered through TV ads or unsolicited calls.

•Community members can help by looking out for older neighbors. When in public, they can be aware of older individuals purchasing gift cards in large amounts. They can encourage those they know to talk to a trusted source about their Medicare questions and tell neighbors about the most recent Medicare scams. They can even consider volunteering with StateWide’s SMP.

The NYS Senior Medicare Patrol is ready to provide you with the information you need to protect yourself from Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse; detect potential fraud, errors, and abuse; and report your concerns. After winning at the county level, the Churchville-Chili team went on to compete against 40 other teams at the state competition held May 24 and 25 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
