The Story of Brockport’s Namesakes: Hiel and Phebe Brockway Presentation at the Morgan-Manning House, March 8 by Doug Hickerson The Story of Brockport’s Namesakes: Hiel and Phebe Brockway will be presented at the Morgan-Manning House on Thursday, March 8. The program will be presented by Mary Lynne Turner, exploring the lives and history of Hiel and Phebe Brockway for whom Brockport was named. It will include how Hiel brought packet boats and many other ventures to Brockport. It starts at 7 p.m. in the Victorian home at 151 Main Street. The Western Monroe Historical Society provides the evening free and open to the general public. Refreshments will be served following the program Turner provides a brief background on the program (edited and condensed): Hiel Brockway and Phebe Merrill were both born in Connecticut in the mid 1770’s and married in 1798. In 1816-1817, they moved to the Town of Sweden with 12 children, and one more would be born there. Clarkson was actually part of what was called Murray Corners in the early 1800’s. It was situated at the intersection of two Native American paths, Ridge Road and Lake Road. They became well-traveled routes, and Hiel saw business opportunity in the area, especially since the long-awaited canal was going to become a reality soon.
When it became clear that the canal was going to be dug about a mile south of Clarkson, Hiel bought a great deal of land on the west side of the Lake Road. In 1819, when the village was being formed, Hiel Brockway led the meeting where the name was decided. There was apparently very little discussion that the name Brockport would be appropriate, as he was the major land owner. The canal reached Brockport in 1823 and provided a great opportunity for Hiel and other investors to provide the possibility of comfortable east-west travel without the difficulties in riding stage coaches and covered wagons. He started the Red Bird Packet Boat Line, setting up a boat yard and a brick yard along the canal. Successful for a while, the packet boat line was not able to keep up with the new railroad in the 1840’s. The program includes a Power Point presentation by Gordy Fox, discussing packet boats in general. “I will discuss construction of these boats at a yard beside the canal,” he said. “Some of the topics will be: types of wood used, planking and water proofing the boat, fitting out the interior, flipping the hull and launching. I built a model of a packet boat leaving it open to show construction of frames, chines, strong back, etc.”
Hilton sophomore Greg Diakomihalis won first place in the 113 lb. weight class at the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championships held in Albany. He won his third state title by defeating Dylan Ryder, a senior from Half Hollow Hills West, in triple overtime. Diakomihalis finished the season undefeated 43-0. Provided photo.
Hilton Education Foundation holding Hilton Cadet Cupboard Food Drive The Hilton Education Foundation will be holding a Food Drive for the Cadet Cupboard on Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hilton High School. Food may be dropped off at the back door near the tennis courts. Cadet Cupboard, a food pantry for the students in the Hilton Central School District, provides children in need with essential, nutritious food that they can subtly take home and safely prepare on their own. For $6, a child in need in the community can be fed for an entire weekend. “Food is a basic need for everyone, but especially for growing children,” said Hilton Food Service Director Scott Ziobrowski, who coordinates the program. “Childhood nutrition is critical to their mental and physical development.” Donations of kid-friendly, non-perish-
able items are needed. For a complete list of items, visit www.hiltoneducationfoundation.org/cadetcupboard/index.html. Please no perishable or glass items. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. 100 percent of all Cadet Cupboard donations go directly to the students. The Hilton Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit led by a seven-member Board of Directors that is comprised of volunteer members from the community, business and education, and is a member of the American Schools Foundation Alliance (asfalliance.org). The Hilton Education Foundation does not receive any funding from the Hilton Central School District. For more information, contact Scott Ziobrowski, director of School Food Service, at 392-1000, ext. 2152. Provided information
Town of Sweden seeking speed limit reduction on Owens Road These portraits of Hiel and Phebe Brockway, painted cc. 1825, hang in the back parlor of the Morgan-Manning House. Mary Lynne Turner will discuss mystery of how the portraits got to MM House since the Brockways were not related to the Morgan family. She will comment on the hairstyles, clothing and demeanor portrayed, reflecting the earlier Regency era rather than Victorian era styles. Provided photos.
Following several requests by residents, the Town of Sweden is seeking a speed limit reduction on Owens Road. Once an official recommendation is filed by Highway Superintendent Brian Ingraham, the Sweden Town Board may pass a resolution requesting the reduction. New York State will make the determination with input from Monroe
County. The speed reduction request is part of a two-prong approach to improving pedestrian safety on Owens Road. The town is also pursuing a grant to install sidewalks on the road. Letters of public support for either project may be sent to Supervisor Kevin Johnson, Town of Sweden, 18 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420.

Mercy ends Cadets campaign by Warren Kozireski Fifth-ranked Mercy jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated fourth ranked Hilton 62-37 in the Section V Class AA girl’s basketball quarter-finals. Meghan Schiano knocked down consecutive treys late in the first quarter to close the early Mercy lead, but the Cadets managed just ten second quarter points—four from senior Alyssa Juergens, four by Megan Letta and a jumper by Katie Annable. Juergens scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the third quarter along with a put-back from Linzee Reyes and three more points by Schiano, but Mercy extended their lead to 17.
The Cadets offense dried up over the final eight minutes as they got two field goals by Juergens and a three-pointer by Letta for their only scoring. “They did what we asked them to do and executed perfectly, but we can’t control what shots go in,” Hilton head coach Jeff Eichas said. “Their top players make it tough where if you play down low they hit three’s and if you extend they go inside. They will get their points.” In addition to Juergens 17 points which gave her 227 this season, Schiano finished with nine and Letta added seven in Eichas’ final game as head coach of the Cadets. Mercy’s Katie Titus led all scorers with 24 points and Traiva Breedlove added 14.
Brockport boy’s win second consecutive indoor track title by Warren Kozireski Jarrett Champion, Sean Keenan and Miroslav Boychuk each won individual events and the Blue Devils used their team depth to win their second consecutive Section V Class B boy’s indoor track and field championship with 138 points. Champion won the 55-meter dash by onetenth of a second in 6.71 seconds and later took third in the 300-meter dash. Sean Keenan earned the top spot in the high jump clearing 5’10” with teammate Cody Place just two inches behind in third. And Boychuk cleared 10’6” to win the pole vault with fellow Blue Devils Cameron Howard and Tyler Miller also earning points.
Caleb Peck was second on the 600-meter run in 1:28.38, Alec Andrews finished second in the 1000-meter run in 2:37.55 and Nicholas Andrews was runner-up in the 3200-meter run in 9:52.16. The Blue Devils’ 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams both also crossed second. Brockport’s depth showed in the field events as they took spots third through seventh in the shot put with Dominic Polizzi throwing a team-best 40’5.50 inches for the bronze. Joshua VanDeMark, Daniel Davis and Gordon Fisher all earned team points. And they finished second through fifth in the weight throw led by Polizzi’s second place toss of 50’11” with VanDeMark, Fisher and Dominic Passaflume taking third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Hilton dream ends in semi’s by Warren Kozireski In the Section V boy’s basketball semifinals for the first time in ten years, Hilton closed a 15-point halftime deficit to just five points with just less than three minutes remaining, but could not complete the comeback in a 61-51 loss to UPrep in their Class AA game. A Joey Lipani trey and sophomore Tah’Jae Hill hitting on his drive tied the game at 5-5, but the Griffins went on a 120 run to end the first quarter with a 17-5 advantage. Cadet turnovers were a factor in the second quarter along with Griffin offensive rebounds, but Hill scored six of Hilton’s nine points over the eight minutes to keep the game within reach. Hilton took advantage of UPrep foul trouble in the third as sophomore Najier Daniels hit a pair of put-backs, Hill on a drive and Lipani a free throw to cut the deficit to eight halfway through the quarter. In the fourth, junior Mitchell Carr began a late Hilton push with a put-back followed by five more points from the free throw line from three different Cadets before the Griffin lead became just five points after a Hill drive with 2:51 remaining. But the Cadets managed just four more baskets—two by senior Morgan Kunigan
and a trey by senior Lipani—during the rest of the game. “I’m extremely proud of our guys and the way they battled,” Hilton head coach Troy Prince said. “They listened to everything we said and it was a matter of trying to hit our shots, trying to fill some of the gaps where they were penetrating and take care of the ball a little bit. “At the end of the day we didn’t knock down as many shots as we normally do. With the experience, we’re going to be back here in the next couple of years.” Hill had a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds for Hilton while Carr hauled in ten rebounds. Daniels and Lipani each finished with seven points while point guard Noah Malta handed out four of the Cadets seven assists. Hilton seniors Lipani, Kunigan and injured Nick Walsh all completed their high school basketball careers. “Some of our players are young and I think only good things are coming for us,” Prince concluded. “The expectation has been set and there has been buy-in lately—the last three games we’ve played terrific defense. “If we continue to have some of our younger kids develop…I’m excited for what we have ahead of us.”

Meetings
•The Hilton-Parma-Hamlin Chamber of Commerce will hold its March Business Breakfast on Wednesday, March 7, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The breakfast will be held at The Arlington Restaurant, 4 Main Street, Hilton. Note: The Breakfast Buffet is optional, costs $10 per person all inclusive of meal, beverage, tax and tip. You may attend without purchasing breakfast. Our normal March meeting is an open forum, with topics brought up by attendees; however, this year, Assistant Fire Chief Mike Lissow will present vital information on the phasing out of the Hilton Ambulance Department, which will occur in June 2018. This major change in emergency services in Hilton will have significant impact on every business, service organization and resident, plus any visiting non-residents. Lissow and at least one of the ambulance key leaders will explain: what is happening to the Ambulance Department; why this is happening, and happening now; how it will impact emergency situations; and what the new ambulance services plan is. While many other presentations are planned around Hilton in the coming months, this business breakfast is specially geared to the interests and needs of the Hilton, Parma and Hamlin businesspersons, particularly how you as a business owner, served by the Hilton Fire Department, want and need to be informed and prepared. Let us know if you will be attending March 7 so the buffet can be prepared. The Arlington can serve about 75 people. Reply by the end of Monday, March 5 by sending a note to mykemerrill@gmail.com. If you decide to come after that time, call President Myke Merrill at 615-6383 or Secretary Michelle Ames at 749-5059 so we can fit you in. This is a very important issue, and is geared specifically to the business community of Hilton, Parma and Hamlin. You do not need to be a member of the Hilton-Parma-Hamlin Chamber of Commerce to attend this event. •The Triangle Tract Genealogical Society meets the first Tuesday of the month from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Ogden Farmers’ Library, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport. Free; all welcome. For information, call 617-4867. •Spencerport Rotary Club meets for dinner and community fellowship each Monday at 6:15 p.m. at Slayton Place Restaurant in Spencerport. •Hilton Lioness Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at Foster’s Restaurant, 50 Canning Street, Hilton. Community service and monthly speakers. Guests welcome. Call Linda for information 392-8545. •The Chili Art Group meeting on March 8 at the Chili Senior Center has been changed to March 15. March Canada goose season by T.R. Hendrick The sweet aroma of thawing cow manure wafted up from the dairy farm in the valley. The early March goose season was in full swing in southwest New York state and the thaw carried a false rumor of spring in the air. My son Joel and I were hunting in the middle of a cut corn field outside of Perry N.Y., hoping that the 500 geese feeding here yesterday would return. The ground was half covered with muddy remains of the snow that had rested here all winter. The remaining unharvested corn that had been hiding under the snow was suddenly accessible to the Canada geese in the area for the first time in two months, and chances were good that the geese would return. The ground was a sloppy concoction of mud, snow and corn stakes; and our (L to R) Joel Hendrick, Cove and “George Clooney” with a few March geese from last boots were doubled their weight due to season. 2018 Senior Trips available with H-P Recreation and Senior Center Join Hilton-Parma Recreation & Senior Center on escorted day trips with motorcoach transportation most of the time, with Town of Parma transportation also used. These are full day trips in New York to see some new sites and make new friends. Upcoming trips include Tillman’s Village Inn Luncheon Show on Wednesday, March 14, featuring Kirk McWhorter with classics of the golden age from the ’30s, ’40s & ’50s, with songs from Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and a host of others. The trip is almost full, but you can also drive to this location on your own. For April, we will most likely attend a play at the Hilton High School. For May we will head to the Eldred Museum
in Pennsylvania with lunch at Sprague’s. It’s then off to Skaneateles and Auburn in June to see Mamma Mia. July holds a full day of great fun as we are headed to Presque Isle in Erie, Pennsylvania. August is dine-around the lake as we head all around the Fingerlakes for some great sights and food, too. It’s a mystery trip for September, but it’s sure to be a good time; Cortland Music Park will be rocking for the October trip and it’s off to Buffalo in November to rediscover the city and the new developments. December will hold a local trip not yet determined and will be complete around the end of August. These trips are subsidized by the Town of Parma, therefore, only Town of Parma residents are eligible for a
subsidized rate, although non-residents may attend and pay a non-resident fee if space is available. Pick up and departure is always from the Hilton Senior Center, 59 Henry Street, Hilton, NY. Call 392-9030 or visit us online for detailed trip information, program policies, registration procedures or to register online. A full complete list of pricing for these trips is available at the recreation office or online at www.parmany.org/Recreation. We can also email it to you. For any additional questions please call our office at Hilton-Parma Recreation at 392-9030. Provided information

Work continues to improve Village and canal bridge I want to take this opportunity to update the community of various projects that will be going on in the Village of Spencerport that will be collaborations with various agencies. The Village and various community representatives have been working with John Blanton from CSX regarding the removal of the bridge abutments on Union Street. CSX has engaged Arcadis Engineering to formalize the plan for removal with assistance from the Village of Spencerport. The banks will be sloped, and work is scheduled to be done this summer. Following removal of the abutment, design plans will begin in collaboration with Spencerport Schools for the placement of a welcome sign. The plans for the closing of the canal bridge continue to be evolving. Currently, final design is to be completed
by June of 2018, with bids for construction to be let out in January 2019 with work to start in 2019 or early 2020. The NYS Canal Corp. will be designing the lift mechanism and the NYS Department of Transportation will be completing the work. Both Spencerport and Fairport’s canal bridges will be under the same contract and closed for 18 months. Please watch the Suburban News and the Village of Spencerport’s website for the public informational meeting date regarding this project. While these projects may be of an inconvenience, they will greatly improve the Village of Spencerport.

FIRST Robotics Finger Lakes Regional Competition Many of our local school districts pride themselves on being able to offer a multitude of hands-on experiences to their students who are interested in math, science, and technology. For the Inspiration of Science and Technology (FIRST) is an organization that offers mentor-based research and robotics programs to students that encourages them to pursue their interests in science, math, and technology. FIRST Robotics Competitions require students to build and program industrial-sized robots to play field games against competitors. The Finger Lakes Regional FIRST Robotics Competition will be held at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Gordon Field House from Thursday, March 15 to Saturday, March 17. Spencerport School District’s team, known as Ranger Robotics Team 3015, has had outstanding success at past competitions and we wish them the best of luck as they participate in this year’s regional competition. One of the needs of the program is a practice space large enough for the team to work and simulate the conditions of the match field. This need was generously filled by Mr. Andy Gallina from Gallina Development Corporation who helped the students of Team 3015 find a site where they can prepare for future competitions. Although we have had major success with our existing robotics teams here in Monroe County, it is our responsibility as parents, teachers, and representatives to make sure as many students as possible have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning, like FIRST Robotics. I have recently supported a Memorializing Resolution calling on the New York State Legislature to pass and Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign a bill that creates a FIRST Grant Program. It can cost as much as $30,000 for an individual school to create a FIRST Robotics team due to travel, registration, and material costs. Through this grant program, schools can be awarded $5,000 to help with these costs. The program gives preference to schools that have not previously participated in robotics competi-

tions, or who would be receiving the grant for the first time. Churchville-Chili High School’s robotics team, Team 340, has worked diligently to create and introduce this bill to the State Legislature. We are lucky to have students here in Monroe County who want to make sure all students have the chance to participate in such an outstanding program. For more information about this year’s Finger Lakes Regional Competition, visit https://www.rit.edu/gcr/firstrobotics/. If your school district is participating, be sure to show your support!

Most homeowners realize the importance of keeping the inside of the house clean, but the exterior of the house is the first thing a prospective buyer notices. Annual cleaning also prolongs the life of exterior siding or masonry. Washing a house is not the enormous task you might imagine, but careful planning and preparation are essential. There are a number of tools, techniques and cleaning agents that can make the job easier. Wait for a warm, dry day when the wind is not blowing to tackle the job. First, protect the areas around the house with plastic sheeting. Set moveable objects away from the house and cover all vents, electrical outlets and outside light fixtures with duct tape and plastic. A careful inspection of the house should follow. Clean any areas with heavy stains (rust, organic or mildew stains or heavy deposits of grime) on masonry surfaces by hand to keep them from running when washed. Most stains can be removed with soap, water, and a scrub brush. Stubborn stains may require a stronger cleaning agent. Luckily, cleaners for almost every kind of stain are readily available. An ordinary garden hose and an automobile brush are usually sufficient for most jobs, but if the surfaces are heavily soiled, you can rent a pressure washer.
