Spencerport bridge repairs begin November 7 The lift bridge carrying Route 259 (Union Street) over the Erie Canal in the village of Spencerport will temporarily close Wednesday, November 7 through Friday, November 9 for repairs. New York State Department of Transportation bridge maintenance crews will be performing repairs to the deck system to strengthen the bridge ahead of the winter months. During the repairs, a detour will be in place for motorists to use Route 31, Manitou Road and Route 104 (West Ridge Road). Following the Union Street closure, the nearby Martha Street Bridge over the Erie Canal in Spencerport will close throughout the winter for repairs and will re-open early next Spring. The work being done on both bridges is to prepare for and ensure the success of NYSDOT’s upcoming Lift Bridge Rehabilitation Project, which will see the Route 259 lift bridge close next July for approximately 13 months. Significant rehabilitation work to take place will extend the service life of the bridge for the next 40 to 50 years. For real-time travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org or the mobile site at m.511ny.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. The Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum interpretive panel includes the photos of D. Scott “Scotty” Warthman (1943 to 2003) and George “Chubby” Churchill (1907 to 1994), named “two spirits of the company.” Buildings shown include, left, the first building from 1893 to 1905; right is the current building erected in 1905. The fire truck on left is a restored 1930 Seagrave pumper as seen in a 1984 photo. The other equipment is the first gas powered apparatus purchased by Capen Hose Co. in 1914. The Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum’s interpretive panel One more sign of a history-minded Brockport Community by Doug Hickerson Last summer a homemade lawn sign appeared on the Main Street side of the Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum. It announced, “OPEN HOUSE, Sunday 1-4.” My wife, Dianne, and I responded and had a tour of the fascinating firefighting collection kept in pristine condition by the museum’s custodians, headed by Norm Knapp. A feature article in this paper August 12 shared the tour with readers The occasional open houses have ended for the season, but now a permanent sign appears in the same place, giving the history of Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum with photos of past leaders and antique firefighting equipment. It’s not just a sign, but an “interpretive panel” provided by the Brockport Community Museum. It is the tenth such panel located around the wider Brockport community depicting the particular aspect of local history that is the subject of the panel. The related organization or institution pays for the panel. A community undertaking The placement of the Capen Hose Fire Museum panel was a community endeavor, Knapp said, with various individuals showing generosity, creativity and hard work. Members and former members of the Capen Hose Mu-

seum contributed $852 for the panel itself. By providing the unique fire hydrant mounting, creative local citizens saved about $350, the cost of the standard post. Typically, a panel with mounting costs approximately $1,200. The historic fire hydrant used for the mounting was contributed by Dave Moore, foreman with the Brockport DPW. It had been passed on to him by the late Jerry Lemcke, who was with the Town of Hamlin Highway Department and former Fire Chief. Knapp explains that the historic hydrant dates back to the era when the water plant for Brockport was built on Lake Ontario. John Rombaut made the mounting bracket to attach the panel to the fire hydrant. He is a current member of the Brockport Fire Department and served as Fire Chief and Association President. The concrete base was the work of Tim Rombaut, John’s son, and Dave Moore. The two also did the “stamping” of the colored concrete walk, creating a brick effect (see photo). John Rombaut and Jim Downs, his neighbor in Clarkson, laid the landscape blocks creating a curved cut-away area with retaining wall. The total display is a result of committed and coordinated community volunteers supporting the Capen Hose Museum.

Assemblyman Steve Hawley of the 139th Assembly District stopped by Holley Middle School/High School (MS/HS) on October 23 to help the Holley Central School District celebrate Public Schools Week. Since the week of October 22 through 26 is also School Board Recognition Week, Hawley began his visit by having lunch with several members of the Holley Board of Education and the district’s administration team. Next, the Board members and Hawley attended a Current Events class, where teacher Nick D’Amuro explained the ongoing multimedia projects the students were working on. Current Events students were working on their first podcast to be released later that week. German foreign exchange student Janne Grasshoff spoke with Hawley about her segment of the podcast that focuses on her impressions of America. Grasshoff is spending this year at Holley MS/HS as part of her exchange experience sponsored by the Holley Rotary Club. Hawley answered students’ questions about his position in state government, how he got started in politics and his views on current events. He also observed students in the MS/HS Library using Sphero BOLTs, trying to guide their remote-controlled robots up a ramp into a garbage can.

This year, the class will be building a barn for Homesteads for Hope in Spencerport. Provided information and photos

New book honors local veterans on the 100th anniversary of World War I To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the conclusion of World War I, the Parma Hilton Historical Society is unveiling a new book honoring veterans who served from the local area – including Hilton, Parma, Hamlin, Greece, Spencerport and Ogden. The inspiration for the book was a painting – an Honor Roll – commissioned by the Town of Parma and completed in 1919 by local artist B.A. Haines. Thousands of hours were spent researching what history told us were the one hundred men who answered our nation’s call for a war that British author H. G. Wells coined in 1914 as “The War That Will End War,” later changing it in 1918 to “the war to end war.” Information gleaned from research visits to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., College Park, Maryland, and St. Louis, Missouri, further detail the sacrifices made both on and off the battlefields of Europe and at home in the United States. In our own back yard are records and photographs, located in both the Village of Hilton Historian’s Office and the Town of Parma Historian’s office, which helped create the stories. Included in the local collections are personal effects and mementos, donated from the families of veterans throughout the years. In addition to the “boots on the ground” approach, the authors of With Our Boys – Honor Roll, Tammy and Kyle Mullen, referenced on-line repositories, including digitized newspapers and volumes of military reports, to create a biographical snapshot of the life of each veteran. Hilton’s weekly newspaper, The Hilton Record, published from 1897 until 1975, contains a rich source of history not only about the men who once called Parma home, but showcases life in the community as well. Tammy calls it the “Facebook of its time.” After two years of development, the Parma Hilton Historical Society is excited to see this work in completion with publication expected by December. The Mullens will present their work on Monday, November 12, at the Parma Hilton Historical Society’s monthly meeting held at the Parma Town Hall starting at 7 p.m. The painting created by B.A. Haines, which was the centerpiece for the project, will also be on display. The public is welcome to attend this free event. The Historical Society will accept pre-orders of With Our Boys – Honor Roll the evening of the presentation. Provided information and photos

Students compete annually for a seat in the orchestra, performing professional repertoire in at least four concerts throughout the school year. The HYSO’s first concert of the year is on Sunday, November 11 at 3 p.m. in Hochstein Performance Hall. The program includes Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, selections from Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, Bruch’s Kol Nidrei (with the RPO’s Tigran Vardanyan as violin soloist), Rakoczy March from Berlioz’s The Damnation of Faust, and the last two movements of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The Ravel and Bruch works are in honor of the end of World War I (the concert falls on the 100th anniversary of the armistice) and the 100th anniversary of David Hochstein’s death. This season, students from 24 different schools come together every Saturday morning for an accelerated musical experience. Since 2000, the HYSO has performed in cities in Spain, Portugal, Austria, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, and Ireland. The orchestra made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2002. William plays trumpet and is in the seventh grade band and jazz ensemble. He is the son of William and Michelle Spear.

Stage Whispers takes on upheaval on the Supreme Court The Supreme Court has been in the news lately. It made the national news in 1967, as well, when Thurgood Marshall, the greatgrandson of slaves, was appointed to the highest court in the land. Lester Purry, the star of Geva Theatre Center’s production of “Thurgood, will share his thoughts on portraying such an icon at the next installment of the Department of Theatre and Music Studies’ Stage Whispers: Conversations with Theatre Professionals of the year. His talk entitled, “Scaling the Scales of Justice, will take place on Tuesday, November 6, at 10 a.m. in The College at Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre, 180 Holley Street. The event is free and open to the public. (This installment of Stage Whispers was originally announced for November 8.) Marshall’s achievement of being appointed to the Supreme Court bench, as well as his winning (as chief counsel for the NAACP) the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954, are just two of the highlights of an illustrious career that are recounted in the play. The Brown case

basically spearheaded the civil rights movement in the country, though Marshall’s ascension through the judicial branch of the country’s government was met with hardship and discrimination at every turn. Purry was introduced to the world of theatre during his senior year in high school, which led to 17 lead roles while attending Mars Hill University. He started acting professionally in summer stock but, a move to Minnesota with only $13 in his pocket – an ambitious idea for an actor of his “type – proved to be the key to launching a long and thriving career filled with extraordinary acting opportunities. A highly respected regional theatre performer, Purry has graced numerous stages over his 32year tenure in the business. The Stage Whispers series is sponsored by The College at Brockport’s Department of Theatre and Music Studies as part of their alliance with Geva Theatre Center. The series gives community members insight into the process of professional theatre artists. For more information, call 395-2496.

Sweden cuts ribbon on new playground The Town of Sweden welcomed Senator Rob Ortt to its new inclusive playground at Sweden Town Park on October 26. The Senator was instrumental in securing a $250,000 grant to make the playground a reality. The Town was also assisted in its efforts by the Sweden Community Foundation. The playground has features that allows children in wheelchairs to participate actively: a glider and merry-go-round accom-

modate wheelchairs as do the ramps that lead into the center of activity. Children who enjoy sensory stimulation will also find a variety of outdoor instruments to engage them. The playground is not officially open for play yet as the safety surface has not been poured. Inclement weather has delayed the pouring. The Town expects to be able to complete the project in the next week. Provided information and photo

Gates heart patient and senior runner Bruce Rychwalski, 69, was the guest speaker at the Mended Hearts of Greater Rochester (Chapter 050) meeting on Monday, October 15, at the Knights of Columbus Center in Webster. Rychwalski, a heart survivor and fitness advocate, has participated in 313 5K Events since experiencing a life-threatening Ventricular Tachycardia and being diagnosed with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) in 2011. ARVC is a genetic, heritable, progressive heart condition in which the muscle of the right ventricle is replaced by fat and fibrosis, which causes abnormal heart rhythms. After describing his cardiac medical history, Rychwalski, a member of The Greater Rochester Track Club, stated the importance of keeping active and continuing to exercise after a medical diagnosis or procedure (e.g. surgery). He told the meeting attendees that his motto was “If you rest, you rust.” He also quipped that “the only way I won’t jog or walk tomorrow is if I wake up and I’m dead!”

He concluded his talk with the hope that he had encouraged and motivated the members of his audience not to lead sedentary lives. Rychwalski also took the opportunity to join Mended Hearts Chapter 050 before leaving the building. Mended Hearts is a national and community-based non-profit organization that offers the gift of hope to heart disease patients, their families and caregivers. To offer this hope, Mended Hearts provides a variety of programs. Their mission is dedicated to “Inspiring hope and improving the quality of life for heart patients and their families through ongoing peer-to-peer support.” The local community chapters help people understand that there can be a rich, rewarding life after heart disease diagnosis. Members listen, share their experiences and volunteer to talk to other heart patients about what they may face including lifestyle changes, depression, recovery, and treatment. Wheatland-Chili biology teacher champions biodiversity Wheatland-Chili biology teacher Kim LaCelle and her biology class are using the scientific method to develop wildflower seed bombs. LaCelle first had the idea after watching a video about reforestation. She decided to see if she could apply the same principals to bolstering insect habitats. “People love flat, green lawns, but lawns are food deserts for insects and birds,” explained LaCelle. “I’ve collected wildflower seeds like milkweed, the host plant for Monarch butterflies. They make a two-thousand mile journey from Mexico in the spring and they need those host plants all along their journey.” Monarch butterflies are just one example of the insect populations LaCelle is working to help. Honeybee populations are declining. This poses a serious problem for agricultural areas relying on pollinators. LaCelle and her students have incorporated sunflower seeds and other nectar-bearing plants into their seed bombs to help support honeybee and pollinator populations. “We are looking to supplement habitat. We (humans) tend to take out biodiversity, but there are certain rough areas where (people) could leave a wildflower bed. We have a green grass mentality or a ‘mow mindset.’ We like it all clipped and clean but there is nothing left. No shelter, no food. If people could even leave a little section that is not mowed we could have the wildflowers and support insect, bird, and other animal populations.” A seed bomb is a combination of potting soil and seeds, bound together by clay. Because it is self-planting, it is thrown or dropped into a general area for germination. Without the need for painstakingly planting each seed, seed bombs reduce the time needed to cultivate an area with the desired plant-life. LaCelle brought the seed bomb idea to her Biodiversity Living Environment class and presented it as an experimental design project. Students explored variables such as seed varieties and quantities, types of soil and clay, and size. The project introduces students to the experimental model and opens up a discussion of the requirements of life – food, shelter, reproduction or, in short, habitat. The seed bombs created by LaCelle and her class were

Seed bombs germinate in the lab. Photo by Gretchen Spittler. not immediately successful. “Size is important,” LaCelle said as she produced a nectarine-sized seed bomb with germinated seeds sprouting from the sides. Successful seed bombs need to have the correct proportion of seeds, soil, and clay, but also be small enough to completely dry before the seeds inside germinate. After developing a formula for wildflower seed bombs that successfully germinated in the lab, LaCelle and her class “planted” them in a field by seeing who could launch their seed bomb furthest with a slingshot. The class has roped off a research area by the school greenhouse and planted seed bombs. The class plans to collect data on germination this spring. LaCelle presented her seed bomb curriculum to the Cornell Institute of Biology Teachers at Cornell University on October 27. Provided information

Holidays and HealtHy teetH Presented by

Steven J. Thompson, D.D.S. The holidays are when we get to enjoy good times with our friends and family and consuming some special treats is certainly a part of the whole experience. So I’m certainly not going to recommend you avoid all the great sweet treats that are around, but it is always good to keep the consumption of sugary treats to a minimum. And if you can’t brush right afterwards, at least make sure you drink plenty of water to help rinse away the sugar and acids that can damage your teeth. Of particular concern are the sweet and gooey things like that delicious pecan pie that sticks to your teeth. Chewing on hard candy or ice cubes can result in broken teeth so be careful with those. Also, while “grazing” is sometimes considered a healthy eating style, the continuous supply of food and sugar is more likely to lead to

tooth decay. The same applies to sugary or acidy beverages like soda. The big winner in the “healthy” category is probably the turkey which contains plenty of protein and phosphorous to help strengthen your teeth. Fruits and vegetables are also a great substitute for some of the more damaging holiday treats. And cheese after your meal helps counteract the acidity of other foods while providing healthy calcium. Most importantly, keep up with good brushing and flossing habits and enjoy this special time of year!

We are located at 42 Public Square, Holley and can be reached at 638-5435.

Our goal is to “create” happy, healthy patients through gentle care, education & excellence in dentistry.

Hamlin... Where the Heart Is! Hamlin Recreation receives grant from Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation The Hamlin Recreation Department has been awarded $15,000 as part of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation’s High Impact Priority and Direct Effect Grants, offered under the Quality of Life Grants Program. The award was one of 66 grants nationwide totaling $1,230,983 awarded by the Reeve Foundation to fund a variety of projects and programs to benefit the paralysis community, strengthening the Reeve Foundation’s dual mission of Today’s Care, Tomorrow’s Cure®. Funding for this new cycle of grants was made possible through a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living (ACL). The Hamlin Recreation Department has used the grant for purchasing eight athletic wheelchairs of different sizes for use by children in the afterschool programs and summer recreation programs, as well as by other members of the community, to enjoy adaptive activities such as tennis, archery, basketball, and pickleball. The department has also developed a new game based on the popular foam dart leagues currently being played across the nation. This new version of the game is played in sports wheelchairs and the rules have been adapted. In order to create awareness and further develop the game, two free Saturday Open House sessions have been scheduled for November 10 and December 15, from 10 to 11:30 am at St John’s Lutheran Church Gymnasium, 1107 Lake Road West Fork, Hamlin. Whizzing Nerf, as the new game is called, will be a regular program on Saturday mornings scheduled to begin in early 2019. “It’s been amazing to see the support we have received on developing inclusive programming and in particular this foam dart game which is enjoyed by children and adults all over the country,” said Hamlin Recreation Director Anke Applebaum. “We received this amazing grant and have also been supported by Anita O’Brian, Executive Director of Rochester Accessible Adventures and Doug Westerdahl, President and CEO of Monroe Wheelchair. There is a tremendous need in our communities that we are all coming together on: providing recreational opportunities

2018 Brockport Holiday Giftaway The MOMS Club® of Brockport is preparing for the 12th Annual Holiday Giftaway. At this event they will distribute toys to any family in need. The MOMS Club® of Brockport will be collecting gently used toys/gifts for children (newborn through teenager) at various locations. Much of the autumn work we do in the garden revolves around preparing perennial plant material both for winter and for next spring. Peonies are a good example. The plants are native to the northern hemisphere and are a cottage garden favorite which bloom from late May through June in our area. Autumn is the time to plant bare root peonies and divide peonies as the plants begin their winter dormancy. Peonies are a perennial that usually do not need frequent division. Some sources advise not to divide them, and established clumps can bloom well for decades without division. If, however, your peonies have become crowded, you may want to consider dividing. According to Illinois Extension, peonies prefer neutral to slightly acidic soil, but will not do well in soils that are extremely acid. If your soil tends to be acid, you can use lime to make the soil less acidic. Illinois Extension also recommends amending soil with sufficient phosphorus and potassium before planting or replanting peonies. Before digging up an established plant, cut back the old tops and lift the plant while maintaining as much soil around the root ball as possible. Using a sharp knife, separate the root clump, leaving buds or “eyes” on each new planting. Herbaceous peonies have fleshy, thick tuberous main roots with a head-like crown and secondary fibrous roots. The white or pink colored buds or eyes sit on top of the crown. Divide the crown into wedges with at least three to five buds and one to two large main roots to help provide food for next year’s growth. Plant divided peonies or bare root plants with the buds no more than one inch below the soil surface. If the buds are planted too deep, the plant nor-

Proper care of peonies in autumn helps assure beautiful blooms next spring. Photo by Kristina Gabalski. mally will not flower. Set the roots beneath the growth buds. Dividing peonies may mean fewer flowers next spring, but the plants should flower well in following seasons. When peonies finish their blooming next year, cut off any flower heads or seed pods. Allow as much foliage as possible to remain. Peony foliage is an attractive addition to the garden after bloom time and Illinois Extension says the plants can develop outstanding fall foliage color with proper flower removal and shaping. Leave peony foliage on the plant until after it has been killed by a hard freeze in the fall. The foliage manufactures food for the plant - the more food the peony can store in its roots, the better the flowering will be next spring. When your foliage is ready to be cut back, cut stems to ground level and remove the foliage from the garden to control diseases such as leaf blotch and other fungal disease. To protect against frost heaving of the bed area, apply a shallow leaf or bark mulch to the peony bed, and then dream happy dreams of beautiful peony blossoms next year.

Experienced firm or individual sought to plan and design nature-based shoreline

H-P Senior Center November day trip

The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District has released a Request for Qualifications seeking an experienced firm or qualified individual to plan and design a nature-based shoreline project along a reach of shoreline of Irondequoit Bay in Irondequoit Bay Park West. The shoreline and adjacent road in Irondequoit Bay Park West has encountered damages from high water and flooding events from 2017 mainly due to erosion and settling along the road.

The Hilton-Parma Senior Center will offer a guided Buffalo City Tour on Wednesday, November 14. See and hear about all the changes in the downtown area. Drive by a Frank Lloyd Wright design, Iron Island Museum, The Buffalo Erie County Naval Park and more. Before heading home, there will be a stop at the Marilla Country Store and Museum, built in 1851. Trip features a Luncheon Show, “Don’t Blame the Chef,” at the Yorkshire Hall in Pembroke. Italian Master Chef Luigi Mancheezi seeks to share his love of cooking with the world. The sous chef, Stella Mandella, is trying to force him to retire by sabotaging his famous recipes so she can take over his bistro. She consults with the deceased French Chef – Pierre Monchere – now nothing more than a magically floating head – to plan her coup. There’s course after course of fun as Stella plots and Luigi tries to figure out which audience member is secretly a food critic. Meal includes roasted pork loin medallions in albicocca sauce, milano cheddar rice pilaf, Yorkshire salad, butterscotch bliss dessert and more. Bus departs at 8 a.m. with an approximate return time of 5 p.m. This trip is rated Level 1-2 (on a scale of 1 to 3, with 3 being a lot of walking). Cost is $65 for Parma residents, $80 for non-residents. Register on-line at www.parmany.org/Recreation by November 9. Call 392-9030 for information.

Parma Greece UCC held their first ever Labyrinth walk on October 7 and 8. The walk was well received, so another Labyrinth Walk is planned for November 11 and 12. A labyrinth is a patterned path, often circular in form, used as a walking meditation or spiritual practice. It is not a maze. A labyrinth’s walkway is arranged in such a way that the participant moves back and forth across the circular form through a series of curves, ending at the labyrinth’s heart or center. The labyrinth will be located inside in the church’s Fellowship Hall. “We transform a multipurpose room initially intended to be

a basketball court into a Sacred Space,” according to PGUCC Pastor Kurt Traugott. The Labyrinth will be open Sunday, November 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and again on November 12 from 7 to 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public. The Labyrinth walk is unguided so walkers can arrive and leave at any time during these hours. There will also be seating for those who prefer to meditate without walking the Labyrinth. Call the church at 392-6120 with questions, or for information on labyrinths and how to walk a labyrinth check the Labyrinth page at www.parmagreeceucc.org. Provided information

The Hunter Brooks Memorial Fund offers grants to young people who have demonstrated a passion and enthusiasm in developing new ideas, especially in fields such as music, the performing arts, computer technology or entrepreneurship. These grants, up to $5,000 each, are not scholarships for academic studies, but rather direct financial support to assist innovative young people in bringing their ideas and projects to fruition. There is no cost or obligation to apply. In its recent grant cycles, the fund has helped finance new Internet projects, recording studio updates, expansion of

Grant applicants do not have to be enrolled in school, but simply have to explain through the grant application why funding is needed to move their project forward. The Memorial Fund was created in honor of Hunter Brooks Watson, a young McLean, Virginia resident who died as a passenger in a car crash in the spring of 2016, just before he was to enter his junior year at Syracuse University. Hunter had already reached high levels of success in a variety of areas, including music, performing, starting a business, and as a computer technology major at Syracuse. Further information, and the grant application itself, is available online at hunterwatson.org/grants. The application deadline for the current grant cycle is November 15, 2018. Provided information

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - November 4, 2018 19

The Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum’s interpretive panel continued from front page “Labor of Love” Recording, preserving and reporting local history The interpretive panels are the work of the Brockport Community Museum Exterior Display Committee chaired by Allan Berry, working with photographer Richard Black, designer Norm Frisch, Bill Andrews and others. “The Brockport Community Museum is proud of its work which includes a very active and constantly expanding web site,” Allan Berry said. He added, “Our activity includes exterior display work, including interpretive panels and historic markers, interior display work, which includes nine exhibit cases around the community and occasional displays at the Seymour Library and other locations around the community.” Berry continued, “Our effort to bring local history to the attention of our residents and visitors is a labor of love. However, in the Brockport community there is a great deal of support for recording and preserving local history.” He names the following organizations: Emily L. Knapp Museum of the Village of Brockport, the Sweden Farmers Museum, the Western New York Historical Society’s Morgan Manning House, the Capen Hose Company No. 4 and Fire Museum, the Clarkson Academy, the Navy Club, and Hamlin’s North Star History Center. Berry also praises The College at Brockport’s Rose Archives “as a tremendous resource, as is College Archivist, Charlie Cowling,” citing the archives and Cowling as “one more example of the extraordinary College-community cooperation.” Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald over many years has provided extensive feature articles on

all the historical organizations Berry mentions with the exception of the last two. As a free-lance writer contributing many such articles, I appreciate this free community newspaper which chronicles local history that is preserved as well as history in the making which is today’s news. One example is the August 12, 2018 feature referred to at the beginning: “Capen Hose Co. 4 Fire Museum – A hidden treasure welcoming the public” at web site www. westsidenewsny.com/author/doug-hickerson. Many other articles on local history have appeared, such as the October 28 front-page feature “Parma’s first settlers – 1796” by the Hilton-Parma Historian, David Crumb. A dedication of the interpretive panel next spring In the spring of 2019, there will be a celebration of 130th anniversary of the The Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum. The interpretive panel will be dedicated as part of the festivities. Still in planning stages, the event will probably take place in April or May, Norm Knapp estimated. Arrange a tour of Capen Hose No. 4 and Fire Museum Those walking or biking might stop to read the interpretive panel. Motorists who routinely drive by, oblivious to this historical spot, may turn into the parking lot and take a few minutes to appreciate this Brockport treasure as it is presented on the panel. Reading the panel may draw interest about what is in the museum. Private tours can be arranged by calling 585-637-5086 and asking for Don Ennis, one of the museum’s very active custodians. For more information on the Brockport Community Museum, visit www.brockportcommunitymuseum.org.

The historic fire hydrant as a mounting for the Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum interpretive panel was the unique idea of local citizens who also donated the hydrant, created the plate to attach the panel, made a concrete base, stamped the brick design in the concrete sidewalk, and laid landscape blocks for a curved retaining wall. The interpretive panel was paid for by current and past members of the Capen Hose Co. No. 4 and Fire Museum. The contributed custom mounting saved several hundred dollars over the standard post. On Tuesday evening, October 30, Sagawa Park in Brockport was filled with about 100 people of all ages holding candles and witnessing against hate. The Candlelight Vigil was organized by the interfaith group Compassionate Brockport in response to the shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. Rev. Lori Staubitz (at right) led the gathering, which featured personal sharing from members of the local Jewish community, in addition to voices from Christian, Muslim, Unitarian Universalist, civic and community leaders. The focal point was an informal altar of 11 candles and 11 stones, supplemented by candles placed by participants. Provided information and photos.

Auction will include tractors, vehicles, 5TH wheel camper, 1937 Packard Coupe (needs restoration); building materials, dimension lumber, machinery, equipment, tools and much more!
