UR Medicine expanding Primary Care in Spencerport by Kristina Gabalski UR Medicine continues to expand its presence on the west side, this time in Spencerport in the Village Woods Commons, 42 Nichols Street. Strong West Internal Medicine at Spencerport, which is currently located adjacent to Strong Urgent Care, is moving to the other end of the commons in the space formerly occupied by Wylie Chayote’s restaurant. Wallace Johnson, M.D., Director of the UR Medicine Center for Primary Care, says the move will provide more space, an updated facility and room to add more physicians. “This is important,” Dr. Johnson says, because, “the UR Medicine Primary Care network traditionally has been focused on the east side in places like Brighton.” UR Medicine is now working to expand access to its primary care on the west side, he explains, evidenced not only by the expansion in Spencerport, but also in Brockport at the Strong West facility (Brockport Medical Associates) and the primary care office in LeRoy (LeRoy Medical Associates). There are currently two doctors in Brockport and three doctors in LeRoy. “We are lucky to have one doctor in LeRoy who was born and raised in LeRoy,” Dr. Johnson says. Additionally, UR Medicine opened Canalside Family Medicine in Greece in the summer of 2013. With the expansion of its office in Spencerport, Strong West Internal Medicine will go from 3,800 square feet to 7,500 square feet, allowing for future expansion as a primary care office with three additional physicians, Dr. Johnson says. The expanded office will be built around the practice of Dr. Didem Miraloglu, previously affiliated with Lakeside Hospital in Brockport. Dr. Miraloglu is currently practicing at the Strong West Internal Medicine Office in Spencerport.
Dr. Johnson says the Spencerport office will reflect UR Medicine’s new practice model. “We are steering all our primary care offices to feature a ‘team model’ for health care,” he explains. The change creates a “medical home” for families which will be “more appealing and comfortable for people,” Dr. Johnson says. He says previously, family practices and internal medicine practices were housed separately, but the new model will integrate them to, “handle the full age range.” Primary care offices are not just for people who are sick, he explains, but also to help people stay healthy. “We are helping people prevent illness as well as taking care of chronic illnesses,” he says. Dr. Johnson says the expanded Strong West Internal Medicine is expected to open in February or March of 2016. “There have been a few delays, but now it looks like smooth sailing,” he says.
Students take the ice cream challenge - Seventh graders at Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton recently learned how challenging it is to do daily tasks with one arm or leg. They ate ice cream with their non-dominant hand, buttoned a shirt and tied a shoe with one hand, picked up and carried items on one foot, among other activities. The exercise was part of a larger Community and Service Learning Activity involving the whole school. Eighth graders did a walkathon for LIMBS International to give amputees around the world a second chance at life by providing them with a LIMBS leg system. Students and staff are hoping to raise $900 in order to provide three people with new legs. To donate and to learn more about LIMBS International, visit http://ow.ly/SlqJ5. Sweden 2016 budget lowers tax rate in village and town The Town of Sweden’s 2016 Tentative Budget lowers the tax rate in the Town outside the Village by five cents per thousand of assessed valuation and by two cents per thousand in the Village of Brockport. A homeowner in the Village of Brockport with an assessment of $125,000 will pay $304.99 in Town taxes in 2016. That same homeowner paid $300.00 on a $125,000 home in 2008. That makes only a $4.99 (1.7%) increase over an eight-year period. A homeowner in the Town outside the Village with an assessment of $125,000 will pay $587.92 in 2016 compared to $593.94 in 2015. In 2008 that same home was paying $553.75 in town taxes. The $34 increase over an eightyear period is mainly attributable to the highway budget – increased costs for road salt, asphalt, etc. Some homes in the Town outside the Village have special district charges in addition to the general tax levy. Some homes have no special districts. Many special districts will also see a tax rate decrease. “This is a very strong budget,” said Supervisor Rob Carges. “We dealt with the court system revenue loss in the current budget so that we are back to our long-term track record of little to no tax rate increase.” “It’s important to note that Sweden and Brockport property owners will pay slightly less town taxes in 2016,” Carges continued, “but the budget retains all services currently enjoyed by our residents. That’s good for taxpayers and good for residents.” The Town of Sweden’s tentative budget is available for public perusal on the Town’s website at www.townofsweden. org or at the Town Hall, 18 State Street. The Board is expected to adopt the preliminary budget at its October 13 meeting and host a budget public hearing on October 27. The final budget will be adopted at some point after the public hearing. Provided information

Kindergarten Training Program in Brockport teaches bus safety Brockport Central School District Transportation Department held its 2nd annual “Kindergarten” Training Program on August 13 and 15. Parents brought their kindergarteners into the transportation department and took a shuttle to the Ginther School (UPK1) where there were six bus stations set up to train the students, as well as parents, about the bus rules. For most students, this
was their very first bus ride and they got to ride along with a family member. The transportation department held a drawing for all of those who attended. Brockport Walmart donated four gift cards in order to help four students with some back-to-school supplies. The lucky winners include: Aubrey Conner, Jayden Dela Cruz, Caitlyn MacDonald and Todd Scaccia (all kindergarteners). Provided information
Strengthening tips to aid flexibility (StatePoint) If you work out a couple times a week, you are on the right path to good health. But experts say this can and should be just the beginning of your fitness journey. “Our bodies are designed to be fast, powerful and agile,” says Paul “Coach” Wade, fitness expert and author of the new book “Explosive Calisthenics.” “However, modern Americans have become the slowest, least agile members of our species in all history.” Wade says a vanishing percent of people even attempt to unlock their body’s full athletic potential. To help, he is offering tips to take your overall fitness to the next level. Ditch the excuses Getting in great shape requires consistency, and it’s all too easy to make excuses for missing a workout. Whether you’re always on the road or can’t afford to renew your gym membership, Wade says such excuses don’t hold water. “While modern training methods involve equipment like barbells, balls, boxes and gymnastics gear, the superior way of building maximum speed, power and ability is the old-school method of using just

Ditch the fear Traditional calisthenic moves used by gymnasts, martial artists, athletes and tumblers - such as flips and kip-ups - may seem intimidating. But Wade says that most people have the inherent ability to master such moves by working on each one in progressions. “Movements like these have been handed down from generation to generation,” he says. “They should not be the exclusive domain of gymnasts.”

LASTING IMAGES The traditional iconography etched into the headstones of old tombstones may serve as inspiration for people wishing to make lasting statements on their own gravestones. Here follows the meaning of some popular symbols: A weeping tree indicates mourning or natural grief. Clasped hands are indicative of farewells said at death, while a hand pointing upward indicates the pathway to heavenly reward. An urn symbolizes immortality. An angel blowing a trumpet indicates resurrection, as does a flying dove. Wheat sheaves represent the divine harvest, and a wreath signifies victory over death. Flowers

Pushups, squats, leg raises, bridges and jumps are just a few fundamental exercises that can be performed in a small space without any gear.

Five Sons Winery a family affair in Sweden by Kristina Gabalski With a name like Five Sons Winery and RG Brewery, it’s not surprising that the new venture is a family one. Aimee and Adam Mesiti (who have five sons) opened their winery/brewery and tasting room this past May. Located at 1360 West Sweden Rd. in the Town of Sweden, the business includes five acres of grapes and a production building. All wines and craft beers are brewed on-site and the tasting room recently began offering non-alcoholic spruce soda to kick off a line of homemade soda drinks that will eventually include selections like root beer and birch beer, Aimee says. Adam, who retired as a Village of Brockport Police Officer two years ago, has an interest in wine making that goes back two decades, Aimee says. Ten years ago the family planted their very first grape vines in hopes of one day opening a winery when Adam retired. Their location turned out to be a perfect spot for a vineyard. “They came out amazingly,” Aimee says of the first crop of grapes. Soil tests done by Cornell University confirmed the site was “fantastic” for grape production, she explains. The process of building the production facility and tasting room hasn’t been easy, Aimee notes, but the Mesitis persisted through the long process including obtaining all the necessary licenses to open their business. Initially, they thought they would convert a small barn on the property for production and tasting, but realized it was too small. “We needed to build a bigger building to house both aspects,” Aimee says. The spacious tasting room has a large porch and overlooks the vineyard. Behind the tasting room is the threebarrel system brewery and winery. Aimee and Adam’s 20-year old son, Jared, is becoming an experienced brewer despite the fact he is too young to legally drink. Eighteen is the legal age for serving and brewing beer in New York State. He enjoys concocting full grain craft brews with flavors such as “Nilla Wafer,” “Orange Creamsicle,” and “Caramel Apple” for fall. The Mesitis are pleased that their boys are taking an interest and vital role in the business. “For them to jump in and be so involved is wonderful,” Aimee says. The Sweden community has also embraced Five Sons. “There has been an amazing response and support from the local community,” Aimee says. “We are touched by the local

The success of the opening year has been tinged somewhat by the fact 2015 will likely go down as a memorable year for local grape growers and vintners. Aimee explains that the extended frigid cold of this past winter coupled with the Memorial Day weekend freeze, means there will be no grape harvest this year. Five Sons vineyards, “got decimated... it was like a nuclear bomb went off,” she says of the effect of the late May temperatures. Five Sons should be able to purchase enough grapes for this year’s productions, Aimee notes. The Mesitis also plan to re-plant vines that suffered winterkill using more cold-hardy varieties. “We will do what we can do,” she says and hope for a spectacular harvest in 2016. This fall the winery will release a number of new wines including Ruby Sipper, Lemberger, Baco Noir, Rocco’s Red and Sailors Delight. Five Sons Winery also hosts special and private events. A Fall Festival is planned for October 17. “There will be a tent with live music, face painting, a food truck and lots that people can do,” Aimee says. The Mesitis hope to offer more special events, particularly during the summer months, in future years. The tasting room is open year-round and hours are 2 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays; Noon to 7 p.m. on Thursdays; Noon to 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

Target mid-level models Before pulling the trigger on the fully loaded model of a car, compare its price to the model line’s base price. The loaded version could cost around 50 percent more than the stripped-down special. You could probably buy the base model of a considerably nicer car for the same money. Target a mid-level specification of your chosen vehicle with meaningful upgrades. Consider CPO Your heart may be set on a particular new car, but when did the current version of that car debut? For example, the brand-new Honda Accord at your local Honda dealer will be a 2015 model, but the same platform, features and styling have been in use since 2013. You’ll get essentially the same car if you buy a used 2013 or 2014 vehicle.

OIL CHANGE
(StatePoint) For teens, getting behind a wheel can seem like an exciting taste of freedom. But too much leeway too soon can have dangerous results. Car crashes are the number one killer of teens, and half of all teens will be involved in a car crash before graduating high school, reports the National Safety Council (NSC). Luckily, states with a Teen Safe Driving Coalition are helping change the game. The Coalitions -- comprised of state and local government, law enforcement, public health agencies, traffic safety and injury prevention organizations, academia, businesses, teens, parents and crash survivors -- were established by NSC and The Allstate Foundation. They have worked at the grassroots level for the last four years to educate parents and teens about the risks of teen driving. Coalitions exist in California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas and offer solutions for parents to helps teens be safer. The results have been effective. Crashes involving 15- to 17- year-old drivers in Coalition states have dropped nearly 34 percent since the Coalitions were established four years ago, whereas non-coalition states have experienced just a 19.5 percent drop, according to NSC analysis of federal fatality data. The Coalitions’ success is in part because they promote a program that indisputably saves lives. Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL), a proven method of reducing teen drivers’ crash risk by 20 to 40 percent, works by maximizing experience while minimizing common driving risks teens face, such as nighttime driving and carrying teen passengers. This allows new drivers to gain experience with less exposure to high-risk scenarios.

Sell-by-owner Watch out for dealerships eager to take your trade-in, as they typically won’t offer retail value. While this transaction is easy, it may cost you hundreds, if not thousands when compared to selling your car on the open market. Of course, you’ll need to be willing to spend time waiting for the right buyer.

Buy from dealer stock Buying from dealer stock often requires flexibility, because you’re choosing from what the dealer ordered, as opposed to ordering exactly what you want. But on the flip side, dealers have a strong incentive to move existing inventory. For substantial savings, take a good look at available inventory among all the nearby dealerships, and distant dealerships that offer long-distance delivery, to see if there’s anything close to what you want.
Pay attention to finance and insurance Finance & Insurance (F&I) is where dealers make a lot of their money. The key is to be a hard-nosed, well-informed shopper. Listen to what the dealership has to offer, but be ready with a backup plan that includes your own financing options. Make sure you read all the fine print on any warranties offered. There are good deals to be had, but it’s also easy to be taken to the cleaners. Those with excellent credit may be offered factory rebates and 0 percent financing.

Plus, like Honda, most manufacturers’ certified preowned (CPO) programs include full reconditioning by factory-trained technicians, along with a competitive warranty. Consider purchasing lightly used models for thousands less than new. With a few exceptions, the CPO warranty makes it almost like buying new. Many brands even offer extras, such as a free satellite radio trial and free maintenance and roadside assistance.

With that in mind, Bernstein is offering some life-saving tips to families with new drivers: •Parents should drive with teens regularly even after they receive their license. A minimum of 30 minutes weekly can help ensure that safe driving skills are being employed. •Talk with teens about managing distractions, such as phones -- both handheld and hands-free -- the radio, other young passengers, and even beautiful roadside scenery. When teens are driving, they must stay focused on the task at hand. •Mile for mile, 16 and 17 year-old drivers are about three times as likely to be involved in a fatal car crash at night than during the day, according to “Injury Prevention,” a peer review journal. Parents should give teens opportunities to learn nighttime driving skills with an adult supervisor in the car. •One of the best ways for teens to learn to drive is by example. So practice safe habits always.

Four essential tips for staying safe while traveling (StatePoint) Adults 50 and over are some of the nation’s most frequent travelers; however, they can be particularly at risk for various vacation woes. Whether embarking on a multi-week cruise or a quick weekend road trip, travelers should take steps to avoid certain snafus, say experts. There are several ways travelers can protect themselves, including:
include smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detection. Home automation solutions now allow travelers to adjust lighting remotely and receive security alerts on mobile devices.
Safeguard belongings Make copies of travel documents or scan them and email them to yourself so they won’t go missing, even if your bags do. Keep at least one source of money, such as a credit card, in a place other than your wallet -- preferably not on yourself. Use hotel safes when they are offered. Being without a method of payment when you’re traveling can be a major pain.
Protect your identity Thirty percent of travelers have experienced identity theft while traveling or know someone who has, according to a recent survey. Leave items like social security cards or unneeded credit cards at home. Avoid public Wi-Fi when possible and make purchases with credit cards, which often offer better fraud protection than debit cards. Require passwords for access to your devices. Be wary of entering personal information when using public computers. A variety of identity protection services are available to assist with proactive identity and credit monitoring. Prepare for emergencies If you’re traveling abroad and get sick or injured, hospital costs could be extreme, even for relatively minor issues. Protect your travel investment. Travel insurance can include medical coverage, trip interruption and more.
Secure your home Unplug electronics and turn off your main water supply. If possible, have a friend keep an eye on your home. A security system can add peace of mind. A variety of 24/7 home security monitoring services

The family of Raymond Sailer Sr. wishes to express our profound appreciation and gratitude to both Sgt. Wheat and Officer Dawson of the Brockport Police Dept. for their professionalism and caring at the time of Ray’s death on Sept. 15, 2015. Thank you! Sharon Sailer

Golden Eagles tie first conference game by Warren Kozireski Spencerport grad Collin Goettel helped rally Brockport from a 1-0 deficit with one goal and one assist as they settled for a 2-2 tie in their first SUNYAC conference men’s soccer game of the season against Buffalo State. “Some of the guys were a little too hyped and we got off our game,” Goettel said. “We were ready, but our emotions got the best of us in spots. In the end it’s the SUNYAC’s and it will be physical every game. This one just didn’t go our way.” The Bengals opened the scoring just 8:52 in as Danny Clavin pounded in a rebound after a save, but it took Brockport just 7:30 to tie it. One of the Golden Eagles had their jersey tugged resulting in a direct kick from 24 yards out that Goettel put into the lower left corner of the net for his second goal of the season. In the second half, senior captain Peter DiLorenzo received a pass from Goettel, took a right sidestep around the defender and scored in the 49th minute to give Brockport a 2-1 lead.
Blue Devils sweep Saints in volleyball by Warren Kozireski
Need A New Tube?
You can pick one up at our office, 1776 Hilton-Parma Corners Road, Route 259, just north of Route 104 (Ridge Road). Look for the log cabin. Our hours are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Suggestion: If you are in a windy area, it would help if you put a piece of duct tape on the back of the tube to prevent the paper from blowing out.
That held up until the 75th minute when Brockport was undisciplined and called for a foul. Bass Starr had his direct kick from 23 yards out deflect off the wall and dribble into the net to tie the contest 2-2. With the Bengals playing one man short for the final five minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the Golden Eagles dominated the late scoring chances. Seven minutes into the first overtime, two glorious goal-line header chances were thwarted and, in the second overtime session, freshman Quinton Volpe was stopped on a point blank shot off a corner kick. The Golden Eagles outshot Buffalo State 20-9 in the game, but fell to 5-1-1. “We need to do a better job of keeping our emotions in check,” Brockport head coach Gary LaPietra said. “It got the best of us and that’s sometimes the only difference in SUNYAC soccer. Their tough physical play took us out of our game and I expected better.” Brockport hosts Houghton College Oct. 6 before finishing the regular season with six conference games, the final two at home.
John Bamburoski and Zach Sweet combined for 12 kills to lead Brockport to a 25-15, 25-22, 25-18 boys volleyball win over Churchville-Chili. Bamburoski had one block and one kill, Shaye Bartnick had two kills and Sweet added one kill down the stretch as the Blue Devils opened up a tight game one with a late rally. The Blue Devils led by as many as four points in game two before the Saints rallied with a pair of kills from Josh Matthews plus one kill and one ace by Dylan Angora to tie the game 19-19. The Saints completed a 12-6 run and led
22-20 before Brockport closed with a five point rally that included a kill by Sweet and an ace by Bamburoski. The Blue Devils never trailed in game three as they built an 18-8 lead with an 8-2 run including kills by Hunter Tintera and Jake Vergari. The Saints rallied late with a 7-2 run scoring mostly on Brockport errors, a kill by Matthews and a block from Angora before Brockport closed out the match. Bamburoski finished with six kills, Sweet matched that and added three blocks, Spencer Anderson led both teams with 15 digs and Bartnick dished out 16 assists for the Blue Devils.

Camp Puzzle Peace brings its Sibling Empowerment Program to Brockport Camp Puzzle Peace/The Family Autism Center will bring its popular Sibling Empowerment program to the West Side this October. The three week workshop will run Tuesdays, 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. October 13, 20 and 27 in the library of the Fred W. Hill School, 40 Allen Street, Brockport. The workshop is open to children ages 7 through 12 and costs $45 per participant. Participants can connect with others with similar experiences and celebrate their own personal strengths as well as those of their sibling. Instructor Sandi Krajeski uses fun activities and conversations to tap into a variety of learning styles and interests. At the end of the workshops, participants will: •Have a better understanding of autism (demystification). •Be able to identify both their own strengths and their sibling’s strengths. •Be a stronger self-advocate and advocate for their sibling. •Identify a self-care technique that works for them. Sandi Krajeski has run the program since 2013, when it grew out of other Camp Puzzle Peace activities. “Parents were looking for a program that addressed the needs

of siblings, especially helping them understand autism better and giving them a safe environment to ask questions,” explains Krajeski. “Couple siblings in particular were worried about what would happen to their brother when they were adults. The extra worries that these kids were dealing with needed to be discussed. We decided we needed to demystify autism and focus on strengths - those of our group members and their sibling with autism.” Sandra Krajeski, a certified school psychologist with over 14 years of experience, has worked with many children across the autism spectrum, both in schools and recreational settings. Much of her time includes helping children and families build skills in the areas of communication, self-regulation and behavior. The Family Autism Center is home to Camp Puzzle Peace, a grassroots non-profit organization whose mission is to provide traditional family experiences for families in Monroe County dealing with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental delays. During their September 10 meeting, members of the Ogden Planning Board tabled the application of Canal Road Apartments following a public hearing at which several residents expressed concerns over the project. Contractor/owner Mike LoPresti is seeking approval to construct two, eight-unit apartment buildings on slightly more than two acres of land on the north side of Canal Road between Upton Avenue and Union Street. The project requires re-zoning from R-1 Single Family Residential to Multi-Family Residential and sits along the western Spencerport Village line. “We’ve been instructed to pay attention to the village setting and be creative,” LoPresti told the board. In addition to residents’ concerns, Planning Board members said they are still in need of more information regarding the project. There appears to be quite a lot to do yet,” Planning Board member Tom Coburn noted. LoPresti described the 16-unit development as, “luxury apartments in the $1,000/month range.” Apartments would have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, LoPresti said. The Conservation Board expressed concerns over drainage at the site and Town Engineer John Freel told Planning Board members the project needs a storm water management pond on the north side as well as a storm water pollution prevention plan. Ogden Building Inspector Patrick Smith said the storm water runoff issue must be addressed, “the project is not ready for approval,” he said. Three residents who spoke were not in favor of the project. An Upton Avenue resident said there are, “more apartments than you know what to do with,” in the town. “It won’t benefit the town to put in more apartments,” he observed. He said the project appeared to be “spot zoning … it doesn’t work for anyone who lives there. It’s not what anybody wants in the neighborhood.” Planning Board member Marc Robinson noted the project has already been through the Zoning Board. A resident of North Union Street said Spencerport has been a quaint village, but now both it and the Town of Ogden are turning into apartments galore. She noted drainage issues she has on her nearby property and asked, “... is the town concerned about residents around there?” Marc Robinson responded that he understands residents’ concerns, but drainage issues will be addressed. When the project is completed, drainage must be improved at the site. He also said there is a strong market in the area for apartments. “Apartments are huge,” Robinson noted. “They can’t build them fast enough.”

Harvest Festival comes to Hamlin Oct. 10 The Hamlin Harvest Festival will surely become a favorite fall tradition and the Hamlin Fire Department plans a fun-filled start to the season with the 1st annual Hamlin Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 10 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Hamlin Fire Department and Hamlin Wheel Fest Committee have joined in creating a new one day festival for the Town of Hamlin called “Hamlin Harvest Festival” to celebrate the farming community of Hamlin with pumpkins, leaves, apples, bales of hay and crops that are grown by this great community. Organizers expect many visitors to the Harvest Festival and enjoy lively entertainment, farmers market, delicious food, browsing artists, crafters, car cruise-in, fire prevention programs, with games and activities in the children’s area. The Harvest Festival will give people an opportunity to relax, have one-on-one conversations with local farmers, and take the time to learn more about the farming community,” says Michael Gross, Harvest Festival Chairman. “We are happy to give everyone the chance to catch up with their closest friends and neighbors, also enjoy all the activities that the festival brings.” The list of events and times are as follows: •Art-Craft show and sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. •Food Court and Rochester Food Trucks, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. •Farmers Market, 10 a.m. •Fire Prevention Program, 11 a.m. •Tops Markets Pharmacy Flu Clinic, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. •Kids Corner, 10 a.m. •Car Cruise-in, noon to 4 p.m. •Beer tent, noon to 8 p.m. - Music by Old Hippies, 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and Karma Rock, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Old Hippies will perform at the festival from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Food options will cater to a variety of tastes. The food court with food trucks and local vendors will satisfy cravings for hot dogs, firehouse plates, chili and sweet corn. Several Rochester Food Trucks serve their signature foods, from Neno’s Gourmet Mexican, Slogies BBQ, Chef ’s Catering, Brick-n-Motor, The Red Osier to J&S Fried Dough. Local Hamlin farmers will sell fresh seasonal produce in Farmers Market along with informational booths from Grow Monroe, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Farm Bureau. The children’s area “Kid’s Corner” will be staffed by Main Event Amusements from Solvay, New York with bounce houses to keep the children entertained. The festival is not just for kids. Visitors can find a variety of art, information, gift, business and organizational booths. The Harvest Festival is made possible by the generous support of sponsors who will setup booths and displays. Famed Rochester Area Chef Don Antinore to teach next generation of chefs The Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Center for Workforce Development (CWD) has added a culinary program to its catalog of adult job-training classes. The 25-week program is designed to provide students age 18 or older with a variety of culinary skills and techniques that will prepare them for a career in hospitality. The chefs-in-training will learn how to skillfully prepare and serve meals that look as good as they taste while increasing their knowledge of food science, diet and nutrition. Students will prepare and sample a variety of menu items while they learn and practice skills in baking and pastry arts, culinary arts, front of the house service, hospitality, safety and sanitation. Lecture and hands-on training will culminate in a work-based internship. The program will be taught by Chef Don Antinore, a well-known local chef who has enjoyed a long career that included positions at various prestigious clubs and restaurants, TV and radio shows, authoring a cookbook and running his own cooking school. “I love working with students and allowing them to ignite their passion for the career. This is a great field to be in. People will always need cooks,” said Antinore.

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - October 4, 2015 17
Barry Miller remembered as adventurous, giving and an outstanding man by Kristina Gabalski Hundreds of people, including first responders from around the state, gathered at Pearce Memorial Church in North Chili Tuesday, September 29 for funeral services for Bergen EMT Barry Miller, killed in the line of duty September 23 while responding to a call in Riga. Pastor Matthew French of the Bergen United Methodist Church, where Miller was a member, noted during his sermon that Miller could have been a success anywhere, “The world could have been his, but he stayed rooted where he had grown and gave so much back to the community that formed him,” French said. Miller, 50, was Chief of Emergency Medical Services in Bergen and a 31-year member of the Bergen Fire Department. He started the Explorers program at the Bergen Fire Department and was serving as a Genesee County Coroner at the time of his death. Miller served on the Bergen Town Board for eight years and was owner of Miller’s Millworks in Bergen and the Beaver River Lodge in the Adirondacks. He was a 1983 graduate of Byron-Bergen Central School and president of his senior class. “Good will come from Barry’s loss,” French continued, “the impact goes far beyond this day because of the life Barry lived and how you are touched by it.” Bergen Town Supervisor Don Cunningham was among four people who spoke during the service about their memories of Miller. Cunningham said he and Miller
Barry Miller
A Bergen fire truck bearing the casket of Barry Miller leaves Pearce Memorial Church in North Chili Tuesday, September 29 following funeral services. K. Gabalski photo. struck up a great friendship during Miller’s time on the Bergen Town Board. “He went above and beyond the typical duty of a public official,” Cunningham said. “I don’t think he filed for a patent, but I think Barry invented multi-tasking.” Cunningham called Miller’s Millworks one of the most thriving businesses in Bergen and remembered how the community rallied around Miller to rebuild the mill when it burned in 2007. “He came back better than before and had plans for another expansion,” Cunningham said. He noted the purple and black ribbons tied on all utility poles in the Town of Bergen in honor of Miller. “It’s a testimony to the love for the man we honor today,” Cunningham said, and explained that Miller would likely have turned the day’s focus away from himself. “It could have been any one of the first responders here,” Cunningham said, “Barry would not want us to forget that.” “He had a penchant for helping others and left us doing what he loved,” Cunningham said, noting the huge void left in the Bergen community once filled by Miller. “Bergen will miss Barry Miller and I will miss my friend,” he said. Chief Orleans County Coroner Scott Schmidt, who currently serves as president of the New York State Association of County Coroners and Medical Examiners, of which Miller was a member, said Miller, “… was always a person who was giving
back. He had a zeal for life. Barry loved helping others.” Bergen Fire Department Chief Kevin Finucane spoke of the camaraderie formed within fire departments through the sharing of both agony and laughter. “It will be a long and tough road ahead,” he noted of the loss, but, “We will be stronger and more unified in the end. Rest my brother, we will take it from here.” Two long-time Bergen residents, Kathleen and Gary Fink, knew Miller well. Kathleen worked with him on the Rescue Squad and Gary on woodworking projects and the rebuilding of Miller’s Millworks. “Everybody loved Barry,” Kathleen told the Suburban News/The Herald, and Gary explained that Barry answered his phone when Gary called him to offer help while the original millworks was burning. Gary helped Miller close up a hole in the roof above the CNC machine after the fire so production could be back up as soon as possible. “It was a testament to his optimism and drive,” Gary said. “I always believed Barry was blessed with the ability to proceed in all endeavors as though success was inevitable.”

He remembered Miller’s love of adventure and excitement, including an incident last year when Miller used twenty pounds of Tannerite - a mix of a dry inert powder and aluminum dust used to make exploding targets - to blow up a dead tree at the back of his property. “He said it was awesome,” Gary recalled, “until several seconds later, debris began to rain down on him for ten or fifteen seconds. Shortly thereafter, a friend called from the Lowes parking lot in Brockport to inquire if Barry just blew up the Tannerite, because he heard it in Brockport. “Barry lived life at ninety miles an hour,” Gary continued, “always moving, always producing, always getting the best out of himself and those around him.” Gary recalled a quote from Teddy Roosevelt’s “Man in the Arena” speech about the man actually in the arena, with a face marred with dust and sweat and blood, and reiterated what Supervisor Cunningham and others said during Miller’s funeral: “Barry was always in the arena (and) finished, as he wanted, sliding into home at 100 miles an hour with his hair on fire.”

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - October 4, 2015 19
Brockport CSD celebrates 10th annual Walk to School Day Brockport Central School District will celebrate its 10th year participating in International Walk to School Day. Parents and children are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes or scooters to school on October 7. The annual event occurs in more than 40 countries and promotes physical activity, safety, community involvement and concern for the environment. Local sponsorship is provided by the Walk to School Subcommittee of Walk! Bike! Brockport! Families wishing to participate but live too far away to walk to school may park and walk from Rite Aid (corner of Main Street and West Avenue) or Bill Gray’s. Community volunteers wearing bright yellow vests will greet and encourage the students at all intersections between the two drop off zones and the schools. Student
athletes from The College at Brockport will also accompany the students walking from the drop off zones to provide support and cheer them on. This year, Tim Hortons will supply free coffee for adults. Brockport Kiwanis Club members will staff the coffee tent, located on the campus road between the Hill School entrance and the Barclay School. Walkers can also enjoy Apples donated from Kalir Farm, available at the coffee tent, as well as both drop off zones, beginning at 8 a.m. (while supplies last). The high school rock band, “Flip Side,” will perform near the coffee tent. The Walk to School Day trophy will go to the school with the highest percentage of walkers. The event will occur rain or shine; however parents should use their judgment in the event of inclement weather. Provided information
Brockport’s homecoming festivities draw thousands Brockport Central School District’s students showed their spirit leading up to Homecoming 2015 by participating in themed days the week of September 21 through 25. Themes included ‘70s Day, Tropical Tuesday, Twin Day, Dead History Day and of course Blue and White Day. Excitement built on Friday as pep rallies took place in the middle and high schools. The fun continued with a parade through the Brockport CSD campus, complete with bands, floats, class kings and queens, class skits, community groups and even horses. New this year was the homecoming festival. The festival drew thousands to the Brockport CSD campus. “When we started with the idea of a homecoming festival we had no idea it would be such a huge success. We loved having the community vendors here the food truck rodeo, how many people joined the parade, having the Brockport Teacher’s Association here running carnival games and having the music from DJ Orlando Benzan,” said class of 2016 co-advisors, Christine Howlett and Heather Fuenfstueck. Organizers say after this year’s success, another homecoming
