Holley Central senior enjoys year in Austria by Kristina Gabalski Claudia Drechsel of Murray is about to enter her senior year of high school at Holley Central, and her experiences as a Rotary Youth Exchange student this past year have helped her to see the world in a whole new light. “It opened up my eyes,” Claudia says of her year in Austria. “I didn’t know there was so much out there. I thought, this is so different. People have different opinions and a different lifestyle.” Claudia traveled to Austria in early August 2015 and returned at the end of June this year. She traveled as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program representing District 7090. The program provides an opportunity for high schoolers to experience new cultures and facilitate greater understanding between cultures around the globe. Claudia stayed with two families in Retz, Austria, located in Lower Austria near the Czech Republic border and about one hour north of Vienna. She had an opportunity to learn and speak German and Spanish during her stay as one of her host moms is a native of Ecuador. “It was kind of nice to be around it,” she says of the Spanish language. “I came back this year to learn Spanish at school.”

Claudia attended a specialized high school in Austria with a curriculum focused on preparing students to work in the tourism industry. She learned all about food service - setting tables, wine, coffee, cooking, baking - all from scratch - and even tasks such as polishing silverware and folding napkins. “We were graded on our performance,” Claudia says. She notes that all she learned can be used here in the States. “I really enjoyed it. I’m really glad I got the opportunity to go to this school. I was very engaged in the school and excited about going everyday,” she explains. The school week included four days and the length of each day varied. Some days classes ended by noon, other days students were at school until 6 p.m. In addition to tourism related coursework, Claudia says students studied subjects such as English and Social Studies. “I was so impressed with their English skills,” she says. Her experiences also included traveling around and outside Austria. Much of the traveling was with Rotary, but other travels were on her own. Her trip began with a Rotary language camp held in the mountains of Upper Austria. “It was a great opportunity,” Claudia says. The camp included hiking in the mountains.

Claudia Drechsel poses outside her home in Murray wearing her Rotary Exchange blazer. The pins were collected on her recent year-long trip to Austria/Europe. The back of Claudia’s blazer is decorated with Rotary banners and mementos from her trip. Note the lime green necktie on her right shoulder ... it was part of her school uniform in Austria. K. Gabalski photos. Additionally, Claudia visited Salzburg, Berlin, Budapest, Croatia, Italy, Monaco, the Vatican, and skied the Alps in Tyrol. “Italy is so gorgeous,” she notes. One of Claudia’s favorite excursions was to the Christmas markets in Austria, which run throughout the month of December. “I went almost everyday,” Claudia says. “They serve warm punch and fried dough, painted gingerbread and mulled wine.” There are campfires and people gather to socialize and shop the stands, which are set up in market squares. Another favorite place was the city of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. Claudia also traveled to the Czech Republic to attend hockey games. She experienced first-hand the plight of Syrian and other Middle Eastern refugees seeking asylum in Austria. Claudia says she saw families carrying their only belongings and teenagers who had lost their parents alone with younger siblings. Many Austrian citizens stepped up to assist the refugees and one of Claudia’s host parents worked in an apartment complex that was used to house them. “They are just like you and me,” she says of the refugees. “They came to find a

life, not just a better life. Many are welleducated.” One 16-year old refugee and Claudia were able to become friends. Claudia and her host family taught the young woman, “what hot chocolate was,” and Claudia was later a guest of the young woman’s family. She says the threat of terrorism was “terrifying ... on New Year’s Eve we didn’t go out,” because of the threat of terrorism in Vienna. Claudia, notes, however, that she would then hear about school shootings back in the States. “It’s really no more scary than in America,” she observes. “Usually it’s guns here rather than bombs.” Claudia says she would love to return to Austria for college, but she realizes that may not be financially feasible. She is hoping to attend SUNY Cobleskill after high school to major in Ag Business. Claudia would like to take that degree and work as an advocate, a job that might involve travel and allow her to use her German language skills. “I want to help people and farmers,” she says.

As you walk through older cemeteries in particular, you will likely notice that the headstones are largely a mix of marble and granite. Because marble lends itself to elegant carvings and design that often mimic classical sculpture, it was the material of choice for gravestones throughout much of the 19th century. However, because it is composed of dense crystalline or granular metamorphic limestone, marble is a relatively soft stone that is prone to erosion. Because of this, there was a widespread switch to granite during the following century and up to today. This igneous rock composed primarily of quartz,

Town of Parma Public Hearing Information On September 7, the Town of Parma will hold a Public Hearing at 7:00 p.m. to address questions and hear comments related to proposed Local Law 1-2016. The adoption of this local law requires a referendum, voted on by the citizens of Parma at the next General Election on November 8, 2016. This process and action is called for by New York State Town Law and many towns throughout the state have already adopted the same law. To fully understand why we are proposing this measure, the citizens of Parma should understand our long-term goals and requirement for this action. The Town of Parma is in transition – while we still embrace the rural farming community culture of our past we have emerged into the 21st century as a growing suburban town. As the third largest town in square area in Monroe County, our growing population and infrastructure require us to reassess the needs of our citizens and the services we must provide. An August 2015 audit of our Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) by the United States Environmental Protection Agency highlighted the need for increased management and record-keeping related to environmental protection and conservation throughout the town, on our roads, in our subdivisions and even our parks. We must address these growing requirements while remaining fiscally responsible within the New York State Tax Cap guidelines. Looking forward, the Parma Town Board determined the best way to make use of our limited resources is to consolidate personnel and equipment under a Public Works Department – similar to other towns of our size and demographics across New York State. This local law is the first step towards that goal. The Town of Parma is proud of our dedicated employees and we are extremely fortunate to have a first-rate Highway Department and world-class Town Park. The growing statutory demands restrained by limited fiscal resources require us to accept the fact we are no longer that small rural farming town and adapt our services to match those of a growing suburban community. YouTh hALL of fAmE Brady Shepanski

Brady Shepanski exemplifies what it means to be polite, kind, hardworking, and resilient. The ChurchvilleChili High School junior demonstrates these qualities, with sincere determination after overcoming a sudden and frightening health crisis. Last November, Brady collapsed at school one day, after which, he needed immediate surgery to remove a cyst and fluid on his brain. He missed about one month of school to recover, and had a significant amount of school work to make up upon his return. Marjorie Rudy, his school counselor and nominator, said, “Not only did he work extremely hard to make-up work he missed, Brady made highest honor roll for the first time last quarter!” Brady will need to monitor his health for any possibilities of future procedures, but despite some anxiety, he has adjusted well to facing this obstacle. He has frequently said that this experience has helped to put things in perspective and he is much stronger than he thought. Brady enjoys singing in the CCSD select Concert Choir, and performs in Off the Beat, a vocal ensemble that performs outside of the school day. He is also a member of the high school’s robotics team. Brady is the son of Stephen and Karen Shepanski.

Summer Lara

Summer Lara moved into the Spencerport Central School District from Maine as a sophomore three years ago, and since that time, has flourished as an outstanding student, friend, and role model. Now a senior at Spencerport High School, Summer has had to face difficult family experiences in her young life resulting in her now living with her grandmother. Despite these adversities, Summer challenges herself with a rigorous academic schedule, while pursuing extracurricular interests. “Over the course of her first year at Spencerport, she was able to take down some of the walls she had built up around herself,” Amy Gillett, her high school counselor and nominator, said. “It was amazing being able to witness this transformation. She made friends, became more involved with school, and even played in the Powder Puff game the following school year!” Gillett added, “Summer exemplifies determination, grit, and perseverance. I have no doubt she will do great things in the future.” Summer is the granddaughter of Noreen McGrath.

Spencerport, Someplace Special!

Rangers, Blue Devils in scoreless draw by Warren Kozireski One hundred minutes was not enough to decide the Spencerport Rangers season opening boys’ soccer game with Brockport. Both teams had a handful of chances, especially in the second half, but the game finished in a 0-0 tie. “This was our first game, so we’re still trying to get a feel for what we have,” Spencerport head coach Tom Etsler said. “Most of the game was even, but toward the end they had the better of it.” Brockport senior midfielder Derek Bradshaw had the best scoring opportunity of the first half, but his header went wide in the 36th minute. The early stages of the second half were dictated by Brockport’s ball possession. Junior Zachary Langelotti tried to feed an open Simeon Horton but Rangers goalkeeper Luke Dobles got a hand on the pass to knock it away in the 47th minute. Later Spencerport defender Nick Turnquist stopped two scoring chances from close range with great footwork and reaction. The Rangers threatened in the 61st minute as Quinn Carr found Darek Whitcomb on the left side of the box, but his redirect glanced off the near post. That sparked a flurry of activity as first Andre Strezoski in the 64th minute and Justin Hockenberger one minute later had shots sail high for Spencerport. Brockport countered on the next rush with Horton hitting the crossbar after dribbling through at least two defenders to find an opening. Another chance came following a Brockport corner kick, but was knocked away on the goal-line by Rangers defender Ryan Lam with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Alex Reber was stopped with 6:45 left by Dobles in the Spencerport net. The final scoring chance came in double overtime as Spencerport senior Justin Streicher headed the ball just wide after a corner kick set up by Jake Hutton and Strezoski. “I thought we deserved to win,” Brockport head coach Chris Zorn said. “We only play on turf a few times a year, so we took a few minutes to start pressuring more and develop our confidence. “We’re looking for our senior goalkeeper, Joe McNulty, to have a big year and (Alex) Reber has started off well. We plan to roll guys through and count on our depth this year.” Brockport defeated Spencerport in overtime of the Class A semi-finals one year ago before falling to Greece Athena in the finals. Spencerport lost quite a bit to graduation and will look for several first year varsity players to plug key positions including Dobles in goal and sophomores Ajan Rajamahan and Strezoski at midfield and forward respectively. They will also depend on a senior back line of Matt Davis, Carr, Turnquist and Lam. “We just need to find a way to score goals,” Etsler said. “But we knew that coming in.”

Big Ben’s “Silent Minute, as it has come to be known, is now traveling nationwide thanks to the efforts of the faithful living in LeRoy, New York. Research shows Europe has reinstated their own “Silent Minute, at this time. The Silent Minute refers to an invitation to everyone, no matter what race, religion, or gender, to stop for just one minute at 9 p.m. to pray for the well being of our country up to the election and beyond. There is no need for a special prayer or words. Going into silence has its own effects by raising consciousness and bringing inner peace. The Silent Minute has been used before when England was faced with being overrun by the German army. Winston Churchill appealed to Parliament and to the British King to pledge one minute of silence (as indicated by nine commanding peals when Big Ben struck nine o’clock). Millions of people everywhere observed this powerful nightly ritual. To their wonderment and delight, Germany lost the war. We, too, are at a critical time in our nation’s history. Our heritage, our values and our security are at great risk. Many people have become aware of the need for a positive universal energy. For those who would like to start with a prayer, we suggest this: Heavenly Father, We are thankful for all that we have. We ask that you protect this nation, this state, and community. Please shelter and protect our homeland and families. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen If you would like to, set your clocks and join the Village of LeRoy every night at 9 p.m. for your own Silent Minute of earnest prayer for the well being of our country. Joe Mathis LeRoy

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge accepting applications for reserved waterfowl hunt days

Over the years we have become the marketplace for our community. And while other media might be shrinking, we are growing. That growth will continue, hand-in-hand, with our community.

Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, located in Alabama and Shelby, New York, is accepting applications for the refuge’s reserved waterfowl hunt days. Reservations are required for opening day of the New York State regular waterfowl season on Saturday, October 22 and the following Saturday, October 29. These dates are tentative pending approval of the recommended waterfowl hunting season. Interested hunters must complete the Waterfowl Lottery Application Form and return it to the refuge office at 1101 Casey Road, Basom, New York 14013 by September 15 at 4 p.m. Application forms can be requested by mail, by phone, in person, or by email at iroquois@fws.gov. A PDF version of the form may also be downloaded and printed by following a link on the refuge website www.fws.gov/refuge/iroquois/. Hunters will be selected by a lottery and notified by mail. The number of permits issued will be dependent

on water levels in the hunt area. Reservations are nontransferable. Those selected must attend the Waterfowl Permit Station, located on Route 77, between 4:30 and 5 a.m. on their appointed day to select their hunt stand and obtain their permit. Consult the refuge’s Waterfowl Hunting Fact Sheet for additional information. Individuals with disabilities and any other person who may need special assistance to participate in this program should contact refuge staff at 948-5445 or through the Federal Relay No. 1-800-877-8339.
