The Emily L. Knapp Museum Creative leadership and intensive labor key to restoring Brockport’s landmark museum by Doug Hickerson At 49 State Street, the Brockport Village Hall is attached to the Victorian era Seymour family mansion with the Emily L. Knapp Museum upstairs. The joint structure symbolizes Brockport’s loving link to its rich history represented in the museum’s vast collection of Brockport artifacts. Several years ago, the collection was found to be in extreme need of organization. Since 2013, Sue Savard and her team of volunteers have made remarkable progress in restoring the collection and reviving one of Brockport’s historic treasures. The Work Some pieces of the museum collection were restored by professionals. A magnificent golden eagle was sent to a taxidermist. Well over 107 pictures, with more coming, were reframed with archival materials. Three maps were restored to pristine condition by a conservator. The major work of restoration is being done by devoted volunteers; a small sample is cited here. Tim Fabrizio restored a 1905 Edison phonograph. A grand bookcase was designed by Jim Bolthouse and built by George Cedeño. At home, Sue Savard made a dozen military uniforms look like new. Also at home, she typed labels for files and pictures, and transcribed four long diaries written in script. She has published the transcribed diary

of Joseph A. Tozier, a prominent Brockport citizen. There has been extensive work in sorting, labeling and cataloging 251 duplicate items deaccessioned (released from the collection). Hundreds of original documents, pictures, news clippings and letters were organized, labeled and filed into 36 file cabinet drawers. Also, detailed attention went into restoring floors, repairing wallpaper and painting. All this took an estimated total of 5,000 hours by 25 volunteers since the restoration began, not including Savard’s work at home The Workers On a visit to the museum for this story, several volunteers were at work that day. Sue Savard oversees the work and, since the beginning, she has assigned tasks according to the particular interests of each team member. Briefly, here are their stories with reflections on the museum and what the work means to them: Maggie LaPierre began volunteering last spring. She is happy with any task like sorting books, cleaning brass fixtures, sorting photos and moving furniture. “The handson aspect of what we’ve been doing is very satisfying,” she says. “This little museum is a treasure trove of Brockport history. It’s a lovely time capsule of the past. I’ve learned a great deal about the history of the village and its early residents.” Roberta Hesek began as a volunteer guide three years ago. She has worked on the

She joins in photographing and entering items into a data base. “It is exciting to learn about Brockport’s rich history that contributed to the development of Western New York,” she said. “Through this experience, I have met so many great and talented people connected to the museum and village. We feed on each other’s enthusiasm.” Rosemary Smith began volunteering two years ago. She emphasizes the work of sorting, labeling and filing “boxes just full of articles on Brockport,” she said. “Having always lived in Brockport, the museum has brought back so many memories of my family’s past. It has been an incredible journey and so much more to do.” These three volunteers were asked about Sue Savard’s leadership. From LaPierre: “Sue is great to work with. She has so much energy and enthusiasm for the museum that is contagious!” Hesek: “Sue has boundless energy and the ability to enlist volunteers from many segments of our population. She is dedicated to making this museum a place of pride for the Village of Brockport.” Smith: “Sue has worked long hours at the museum and at home where she does all the typing and phone calls. She is a wonderful friend and a joy to be with.” Sarah Hart has been working for a couple of months on a special project at the request of Sue Savard. As a professional classical painter and teacher at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, Hart’s expertise was needed to examine and assess an artist’s paintings and sketchbooks found in the attic, work that is ongoing. “It is an honor to have my education serve in this capacity,” Hart said. “Working with Sue Savard is like being with a best friend and being part of Scooby and the gang, as we all have fun trying to solve mysteries.” And, she added, “Sue brings a fantastic sense of

adventure to the project. She has a wonderfully honest and thoroughly organized sense of what needs to be accomplished in that museum.” Pat O’Brien has been working in the museum for about two years. She is also chairperson of the museum board. Retired from senior leadership in a major corporation, she has applied her skills to the operation and management of the

Among her many contributions are: A policies and procedures manual; a semi-annual report; facilitation of development of a strategic plan; applied for and received grants; led a program to digitize maps from the 1800’s. She also worked with a team of volunteers who painted five rooms. “Sue is a pleasure to work with,” O’Brien said. “She has a high-energy level and always finds a way for people to contribute in a way that is consistent with their skill set.” Continued on page 9

Comments Village water rates to rise At the Village Board meeting on July 18, 2016, The Village Board passed a resolution to raise the water rate at the first of the year if Monroe County Water Authority (MCWA), from whom we purchase our water, raised their rates in 2017. On January 2, MCWA raised its rates by 10 cents/1000 gallons, and at the Village Board meeting of January 23, 2017 the Village Board voted to increase the water rate. Village water rates have remained unchanged since 2010. Meantime, between 2010 and 2017, MCWA has raised wholesale water rates by 35 cents. The village can no longer absorb these increases and continue to provide the level of service our water infrastructure requires and our residents demand. Therefore, effective March 1, water rates in the village and out of district, including the schools, college and fire district, will increase by 15 cents per 1,000 gallons. The Village Board believes this is a reasonable increase even though it does not keep pace with the water authority’s increases. For an average family using 60,000 gallons of water a year, this represents a water bill increase of $2.25 quarterly. Sewer rates remain unchanged. Margay Blackman, Mayor Brockport

sports &     recreation Kendall falls to Alexander by Warren Kozireski Kendall managed just 11 points on offense through the first half to trail 29-11 and never recovered in a 45-21 loss to Alexander in girls’ basketball. Jenna Regan and Lizzie Sutphen hit field goals while Elizabeth Rath added a pair of free throws over the first eight minutes as the Eagles trailed by as many as nine points. Taylor ReQua and Daniela Volkmar managed the only baskets of the second quarter and Alexander went on a 10-1 to build their lead to 18 at the half. The Eagles tightened up on the defensive end of the court in the third quarter and outscored the Trojans 7-6 with ReQua

scoring five of her team-best ten points and Emily Mattle adding two free throws. But a three-pointer from ReQua were the only points scored by the Eagles in the final quarter as Alexander sealed the win. ReQua finished with a double-double with her ten points and ten rebounds to go with three steals, two blocks and two assists. Mattle scored three points while Rath chipped in seven boards from her guard position. “We defend everybody, but we need to find a way to score,” Kendall head coach Jeff Parizek said. “Our team never quits and plays hard from start to finish, which is what I love about them.” The regular season ends February 14 on senior night against Rochester Prep before the Section V playoffs.

Rangers hockey wins third straight by Warren Kozireski Todd Smith scored two third period goals and Jacob Cerretto registered his teamleading fourth, fifth and sixth assists of the season as Spencerport scored three third period goals in a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Genesee Ice Devils. The Devils scored first at 5:09 of the first period, but Jason Uebelacker tied it with a rebound goal from the slot at 11:52 with Cerretto assisting. The Devils retook a one-goal lead a little of one minute later in the first period with a power play tally and, after the Rangers killed off a five-on-three power play and couldn’t score over a 3:30 span of their own man-advantage, Genesee made it 3-1 with one minute remaining in the second period. But Spencerport’s offense finally found the net in the third period. Smith began the rally by faking a wraparound from behind the net and doubling back for a power play tally at 2:30 with

assists by Cerretto and Ryan Frazer. With momentum, it took the Rangers just 43 seconds more to tie the contest 3-3 as Smith banged in a rebound from the side of the net after a shot by Bradley Haines. Later, with 1:24 of five-on-three power play time, the Rangers took a 4-3 lead as Jacob Wood was in the right place at the right time to score on a rebound of a Cerretto shot at 5:08. The Devils pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker late in the period, but Spencerport goaltender Daniel Nichols made two of his game total of 20 saves to secure the victory. “I thought the penalties towards the end of the second (period) set us back and hurt us manpower wise, but we fought through it and we delivered tonight,” Spencerport head coach Jason Rich said. The Rangers conclude their regular season at Webster-Thomas February 10 with senior night February 7 against Canandaigua.

Rangers grapplers win for co-title; Brockport rebounds at Hilton by Warren Kozireski Spencerport came back from a 16-0 deficit largely thanks to pins from Mason Wersinger, Kyle McCann and Elliott Cherniss to defeat Brockport 33-28 and win a share of the Monroe County Division II regular season wrestling title with Webster-Thomas and the Blue Devils. It marks their first title since the 2011-12 season. Tyler Daly and Cody Anders both easily won their 99 lb. and 106 lb. bouts 7-1 and 12-1 respectively, Gabe Horton won via fall in 3:11 at 113 lb. and Jake Davies had a first period takedown and a second period reverse in his 4-1 victory at 120 lb. to stake the Blue Devils to a 16-0 lead. Spencerport co-captain Ty Mitchell was bumped up a weight class and won his 126 lb. match with four takedowns 9-1. Brockport’s Tyler Davies registered a takedown at the third period buzzer to eke out a 5-4 win at 132 lb., but the Rangers won seven of the next eight weight classes with Wersinger beginning the rally with a fall in 2:44 at 138 lb. Michael Vinci managed a late escape to win at 145 lb. 7-6 before Dom Ferranti had takedowns in the first and second period to win 4-0 at 152 lb. Kyle McCann trailed his 170 lb. bout 8-2 in the second period before he managed a reverse and pin in 3:27. Nick Pinkowski then put the Rangers ahead with a third period escape and a 3-2 decision at 182 lb. and Cherniss, pulled up from junior varsity this season, overcame an early takedown to reverse and pin his opponent in :46 at 195 lb. Rangers co-captain Ryan Cottom was awarded two penalty points in his matchclinching 3-2 win at 220 lb.

Brockport’s Yhaasic Bringer earlier took a 6-2 decision at 160 lb. and James Baker won via forfeit at 285 lb. “We’re building back and laying a great foundation; hopefully we’re getting back to the Spencerport way of reloading every year,” Rangers head coach Dan Glover said. “We wrestled smart and all of our kids bought in tonight.” Five nights later it was Brockport’s turn to come from behind — this time trailing 15-0 — to defeat Division I titlist Hilton 35-33 as they took five of the last six weight classes. Josh Sharp won a 5-1 decision at 182 lb., Mike Spallina was awarded a forfeit at 195 lb. and Lou DePrez pinned his opponent in 1:06 at 220 lb. to give the host Cadets an early 15-0 advantage. Baker began the Blue Devils comeback with a 5-2 decision at 285 lb. thanks to a takedown and near fall in the first period before Tyler Daly led 6-0 and hung on for a 6-5 victory at 99 lb. A Hilton forfeit made it 15-12. Hilton’s Greg Diakomihalis (113 lb.) and senior Austin Hertel (126 lb.) registered falls in 1:25 and 4:48 respectively sandwiching a 6-4 decision by Brockport’s Jake Davies at 120 lb. That’s when the Blue Devils had their run led by Tyler Davies 9-3 decision at 132 lb., Simeon Horton’s technical fall at 138 lb., Troy Ferris’ fall in 1:49 at 145 lb. which put Brockport ahead, Bringer’s 6-3 win at 152 lb. and Carson Daly’s 7-2 decision at 160 lb. All teams now compete in the Section V championships over two weekends with the state meet at the end of February in Albany.

Comments The Blizzard of ‘77 I have kept a diary since 1947 so the following memories are facts. The storm actually started Monday, January 17, 1977 with blowing snow and negative five degrees in the morning with a high of three degrees. School was cancelled. Tuesday, January 18 - School was again cancelled. Negative seven degrees in the a.m. with a high of two degrees. More blowing snow. Wednesday, January 19 - 12 degrees in the a.m. with a high of 22 degrees. A heat wave. Thursday, January 20 - 18 degrees in the a.m. with a high of 22 degrees. Roads slippery. Friday, January 21 - 14 degrees in the a.m. with more blowing, drifting snow. Saturday, January 22 - A high of 10 degrees with more blowing snow. Roads bad. Sunday, January 23 - Not a bad day with some sun. Monday, January 24 - A little snow tonight. Roads much better. Tuesday, January 25 - Decent day. Wednesday, January 26 - Storm on the way. Thursday, January 27 - Eight degrees for a high, three degrees for a low. Blowing and drifting snow. Roads all but closed, but we still had school. (I was a school bus driver in the south section of Sweden). School closed at 1 p.m. and we drivers bucked zero visibility and big drifts. The highway department plowed ahead of my bus on Root Road. Lake Road was one lane in many places. Friday, January 28 - No school because of teachers’ conference. Storm raged all day with zero visibility. Kitchen water froze for awhile. My husband, Hank, left for Kodak at 10:45 p.m. on the C shift and got stuck by the side of Lake Road near White Road. It was too cold for our tractor to start. A man in a pickup truck pulled ours out of the drift. A man from Bergen couldn’t get south of White Road on Lake Road so with no hat, gloves or boots he came to our house and stayed overnight with us. Roads were closed all over. Four degrees with 50 mph winds. Hank couldn’t get out to go to work. Saturday, January 29 - Negative six degrees with hard blowing snow. Lake Road north closed until 10 a.m., and south until 11 a.m. The man from Bergen left for home. Some of our neighbors came over to use our bathroom and to get warm as they had no heat or water. The water line to our barn froze for awhile. Hank and our son, Steve, put chains on our pickup truck. Hank made it in to Kodak that night. Steve and I slept in our family room to keep the fireplace going all night. Sunday, January 30 - Two degrees and still blowing. Hank put the bucket on our tractor so our son could plow out around our barns, the driveway, and at some of our neighbors. Four degrees and still blowing tonight and some roads are still closed. A gas shortage is critical, so there will be no school next week. Monday, January 31 - 14 degrees with more snow and blowing. Roads closed in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties. Tuesday, February 1 - All the way up to 25 degrees with more blowing snow. Wednesday, February 2 - No wind or blowing snow, so the highway crews were really able to clear out the drifts. The Big Storm is over. Hank and Marion Dilger Brockport

Resurfacing of Lake Ontario State Parkway planned for this summer by Kristina Gabalski Local leaders are praising the January 25 announcement by Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R-Batavia) that work will begin this summer on the resurfacing of the Lake Ontario State Parkway from Route 19 in Hamlin to Payne Beach Road in Parma. “The Parkway is used extensively by Parma residents on the north side of town,” Parma Supervisor Jim Smith says. “It makes getting to work in the city or to the malls to shop fast and convenient. In the past, it has been a great way to get to Hamlin Beach and beyond for a scenic trip to Niagara Falls. I think it is great that they are planning on making repairs and paving it. Hats off to Assemblyman Hawley for keeping after this project.” Hamlin Supervisor Eric Peters says the news is fantastic for his community. “I am very, very pleased... they are finally taking care of the Parkway and maintaining it.” Peters notes that Assemblyman Hawley and State Senator Joseph Robach (R,C,IP, 56th Senate District) have been working on the issue for some time.

Both Supervisor Smith and Supervisor Peters say it is important that resurfacing continue along the Parkway to the west. “The western section is in such bad shape it is almost not safe to drive on,” Supervisor Smith says. Supervisor Peters calls the paving “a double-edged sword,” explaining that it is wonderful to have the paving planned going east, but that it is also badly needed going west. The western section connects Hamlin Beach State Park and Lakeside Beach State Park 15 miles to the west, he observes. Peters calls the parks, “Two jewels, but you can’t get from one to the other without jarring your eye-teeth loose.” Peters says he has been working with Orleans County Legislator Ken DeRoller of Kendall to try to get the paving extended to the west. “Every little bit helps,” Supervisor Peters says, “it takes both sides of the coin to make the whole thing work.” According to Assemblyman Hawley, repairs will include asphalt repairs to certain areas of the Parkway, milling and heat scarifying to the existing surface,

wrong way highway signs at intersections, and new pavement markings and rumble strips. “Local officials and I have been drawing attention to the Parkway’s terrible road conditions for years and I am thrilled they are finally coming to fruition,” Hawley said in a news release. “With more and more funding being pumped into downstate infrastructure projects, it is important to remember the beating our roads and highways take from intense winters and cold weather.” In the summer of 2016, the state announced that the Parkway will be paved from Hamlin west to Route 237 in Kendall in 2018, but local leaders and members of the Oak Orchard Neighborhood Associa-

tion have said that still does not address the “horrific conditions” of the Parkway west of Route 237 to Lakeside Beach State Park in Carlton. Kendall Town Supervisor Tony Cammarata has said first responders from his community can no longer take the Parkway when transporting patients, meaning longer times to reach hospitals on the west side of Rochester. “Our main criteria is safety,” Supervisor Cammarata said of the need for Parkway repairs. In addition to plans for paving, the Lake Ontario State Parkway also received attention last year being named to the 2016 list of the Landmark Society of Western New York’s Five to Revive.

GCC time capsule seeking submissions by Kristina Gabalski There’s still time for you to be a part of history by being part of the future. Genesee Community College is in the process of choosing items for its 50th Anniversary Time Capsule which will be placed in the Richard C. Call Arena on the college’s Batavia campus. The new facility is currently under construction and is slated for completion this summer. Donna Rae Sutherland, associate director of marketing communications at GCC, says the deadline for time capsule submissions is March 20, 2017. This is the first time the college has assembled a time capsule, she says. “The committee will review all submissions and determine if anything is to be eliminated.” Included will be a variety of GCC memorabilia and other items of interest. Items currently under consideration include a copy of the local newspaper, photographs of the campus and campus events, a postage stamp, a cellular smartphone, a current popular book, magazine or movie flyer, and summarized weather stats for the year. Sutherland says the college believes the most intriguing and interesting items will be messages from students and faculty of today directed to students and faculty in 2067 when the capsule is opened. The college invites community members to write messages for submission which

answer one or both of the following questions: What would you tell GCC students and faculty 50 years from now? How has GCC impacted your life and what does the College mean to you? “We would love to have students, staff and faculty, alumni, retired faculty and staff, and a wide array of community members and stakeholders - from legislators to neighbors, donors and supporters, parents and siblings of our students, etc.,” write messages, Sutherland explains. The messages should be 200 words or less. Photos or other media smaller than 12 by 12 inches may be included with the message. Send to GCC’s Marketing Communications office at marcom@genesee.edu or drop off at the office in D110. Submissions may also be made via the 50th Anniversary website through the online scrapbook: http://sunygcc50.genesee.edu/contact. The Anniversary Steering Committee will select the top submissions to be included in the Time Capsule. All submissions will be displayed at the Alfred C. O’Connell Library during Convocation, September 10 through 23, 2017. “We have about two dozen items in the box so far,” Sutherland says, “mostly items from the committee at this point.” The college hopes to hold a special ceremony for placing the time capsule in the new Richard C. Call Arena, Sutherland says, but details are not available at this time.

Check Out Hunger campaign returns Tops Friendly Markets, other grocers collect donations for Foodlink Local residents will once again have the opportunity to donate to families in need from the convenience of the check-out line at the grocery store. The annual Check Out Hunger campaign with Tops Friendly Markets and other local grocers lasts through February 18. The point-of-sale fundraiser allows customers to add $2, $3 or $5 to their grocery bill when they check out. All donations will benefit Foodlink, the regional food bank that provides food and resources to hundreds of organizations throughout 10 counties in the Rochester and Finger Lakes region. “Check Out Hunger is always a critical fundraising event for Foodlink and benefits so many families in our area that struggle to put food on the table,” said Executive Director Julia Tedesco. “We’re grateful to Tops once again for joining us in the fight to end hunger and pleased to see so many other great local grocers on board for this year’s campaign.”

Every dollar raised equals three meals for local families in need. According to Feeding America, one in eight people – and one in five children – struggle with food insecurity in Foodlink’s service area. “Eradicating hunger in the greater Rochester community is a core mission of our company, and through the support of our customers and associates, we are happy to support Foodlink,” said Andrew Brocato, director of community and public relations for Tops Friendly Markets. Along with more than 30 Tops locations, many local stores are participating in Check Out Hunger this winter: includingGates Big M,1520 Spencerport Road, Rochester. The Emily L. Knapp Museum Continued from page 1 Outreach to promote the museum and Brockport’s history A vital part of the restoration is the work of attracting people to visit this historic treasure. Compared to other community activities and places of interest, on a relative basis, attendance at the Emily Knapp Museum is low. One way to get the public’s attention is the Brockport Community Museum, a “Museum without Walls,” which brings Brockport’s history to the people. The project includes nine display cases placed in visible public locations. Most of the case contents are provided courtesy of the Emily L. Knapp Museum (some by private individuals). The displays potentially might attract viewers to the museum. Savard created a variety of outreach events to increase appreciation of local history and potentially draw visitors to the museum. Celebrating the first phase of renovation, a Grand Opening was held in July, 2014 attended by 100 people. A Black History Month event was held in collaboration with The College at Brockport, featuring Brockport’s important African American residents of the past; 170 attended. There were presentations on the Moore Shafer Shoe Company and on Myron Holley’s work on the Erie Canal. A Downton Abbey clothing display drew fans of the TV series. “Be an Historian for an Afternoon”

had kids looking in each museum room for an item she “planted” that did not belong in the 1800’s. Chet Fery, “The Bread Man,” taught children the art of bread-making at the Seymour Library’s Local History Room where there was a display from the Knapp Museum. An increase in volunteers has enabled the museum to expand its open hours, April to October, to Sunday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. This adds to the original open hours: Tuesday 6 to 8 p.m and Wednesday 2 to 4 p.m and 6 to 8 p.m. There is a prolific website created by Sarah Cedeño, Brockport Village Historian:www.brockportknappmuseum. org. She also created and monitors the museum’s social media, a blog with about 65,000 hits and Facebook page with around 20,000 hits. Savard’s recently published book, In His Words: Brockport 1858 – 1866 The Diary of Joseph A. Tozier, brings one of the museum’s treasures to the reading public. “We hope to increase our community outreach this spring with more talks about Brockport’s history,” Savard said. “This year our board has set a goal of attracting young people to the museum to learn of Brockport’s rich history. We are working to reinstitute the fourth-grade students

U of R study seeking indivuduals caring for spouses with dementia Caring for a loved who has dementia can be very stressful. Researchers at the University of Rochester are exploring ways to help caregivers effectively manage stress and enhance their own health. The UR School of Nursing seeks individuals caring for a spouse with dementia for a study designed to promote cognitive health in caregivers. The program can be

conducted at home or at the University of Rochester. No travel is required. Eligible individuals must be between 60 and 80 years old and serve as the primary live-in caregiver for a spouse (or significant other) who has dementia. To learn more about the study or how to participate, call 275-6835 or email mindbody@urmc.rochester.edu. Provided information

Volunteer as a Fresh Air host family Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in the Rochester area, and open hearts and homes to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent,

not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877. Fresh Air children include boys and girls from seven to 18 years old. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. For information about hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, contact Sandy Schicker at 746-1654 or visit www.freshair. org. Provided information

Publishers of the best-read weekly publications in Rochester’s western suburbs!

What people are talking about this week... The announcement by Assemblyman Hawley regarding the resurfacing project for the Lake Ontario State Parkway (LOSP) is laughable. Anyone who is really familiar with the condition of this roadway knows that the project he is lauding, from Payne Beach Rd. to Rt. 19, completely misses the mark in terms of need. If he and State officials were truly interested in addressing the “LOSP’s terrible road conditions”, the project would be taking place further west – from approximately Hamlin Beach State Park to Lakeside Beach State Park. This is undeniably the area of greatest need, and the expenditure of taxpayer’s dollars anywhere else along the LOSP at this time is irresponsible and frivolous. I hope that the “nearly 2000” that signed the petition calling for responsible action remember not only how badly they were misrepresented on this issue, but also how Assemblyman Hawley sought political capital for this fiasco. – Jerry Santangelo

Comments Community supports traditional handwriting The Clarkson Historical Society would like to thank all of the 164 students who entered our Third Annual Handwriting Day; we appreciate your efforts. While there can only be nine winners, there were many other entries that made the judging a challenge for our judges. So, we would like to encourage all of you who enjoy being able to write in cursive to continue to practice your handwriting, because the more you practice the easier and more satisfying it will become. With this, you will achieve something that will become a valued part of who you are. We would also like to thank the teachers in the Alexander, Brockport, Byron-Bergen, Holley, Hilton and Lake Ontario Baptist school districts who encouraged their students to enter the contest. Thank you also to our judges, Chris Mazzarella, Terry Carbone and David Gifaldi. Everyone involved helped to make this a success and we appreciate it very much. Mary Edwards, President Clarkson Historical Society

Quilters make and donate 294 quilts Every Monday from 9 a.m. to noon a small group of volunteers come together at The Lodge on the Canal (formerly the Sweden Senior Center) to cut multi-colored fabric or ”tie” the quilts made by their leader, Jim Smith. Jim, a Kodak engineer technician retiree, who “got bored” after finishing his “to do” list, has put in about 1,800 hours a year making quilts; he’s been with the group ever since Elsie Farmer and her late sister, Dorothy Tidwell, started the quilters’ group ten years ago. Residing in Hamlin, Jim is joined by his wife and “sew-mate,” Joan, who works along side of him. The quilters are proud of meeting their goal of producing nearly 300 quilts per year. Jim keeps an inventory list of each year’s cotton 60 by 80 inch “Trip Around the World” patterned quilts made and distributed in the Greater Rochester area: In 2016 - 294; 2015 - 254; and in 2014 - 313 quilts. Recipients who received quilts on a regular basis include: The V.A. Hospital in Batavia, Open Door Mission, Wilmot Cancer Centers at Strong, Unity and Rochester General Hospitals, Migrant Summer School Program, and Women’s Shelters in Monroe (Willows) and Orleans (Pathstones) Counties. Other individuals who receive “care” quilts, may have lost a loved one or a home to fire or a change in lifestyle (moving to a nursing home). The busy Monday morning quilters also work on another project begun a decade ago - “tying” the sleeping bags that Jim makes for the Open Door Mission. Some of the quilters meet the first

Jim Smith displaying a twin-sized quilt. Provided photo. Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a perfect time for anyone in the community to come that wants to work on their own project or get help with an unfinished quilt. Last year, this group made 100 place mats for the Meals on Wheels program. On January 23, Terry Brown, a social worker of the Wilmot Cancer Institute at Park Ridge, stopped by with donuts and muffins to thank the quilters for their lovely quilts that were given to patients in various oncology units. That same day at The Lodge on the Canal, a resident stopped in to purchase a quilt he plans to send to his in-laws in Germany. The S.S.A.I. (Sweden Senior Association,

Monday morning quilters and their “tied,” finished quilt (l-r): Front - Elsie Farmer, Sophia and daughter Lindsay Charles, Ruth Stahlecker and Phyllis Tornatello; back - Emma Wreader, Pat Cooper, Joan Smith, Terry Brown (guest) and Jim Smith. Provided photo. Inc.), a 501© (3) organization was established to serve the interests and activities of the Lodge on the Canal. The S.S.A.I, for example, underwrites programs, including the quilters’ and their costs of supplies not donated. In addition, the funds raised over the years through quilt raffles, the Holiday Bazaar, seasonal centerpieces, placemats and stuffed animals for sale at the Lodge on the Canal, help with expenses. The quilters would greatly appreciate donations of cotton fabric and quilt batting; particularly heavy weight denim,

outdoor and drapery fabrics, etc. for making sleeping bags. These items can be dropped off at the Lodge on the Canal, 133 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420. Monetary donations are payable to: SSAI, Attention: Quilters, at the same address. Newcomers are always welcome. Stop in at 133 State Street on Monday mornings. No skills needed. No age limit. Take it from Pat Cooper, a weekly participant who says, “There’s such a great feeling of accomplishment when you finish a quilt!” Provided information

Monika W. Andrews Creative Volunteer Leadership Award Sue Savard to be honored for her devoted contribution to the community by Doug HIckerson In 2012 the Monika W. Andrews Creative Volunteer Leadership Award was established as a memorial by three municipalities “to encourage, recognize, and reward outstanding creative leadership by residents of the Towns of Sweden (including Brockport) and Clarkson who have served as volunteer leaders in improving the lives of their fellow citizens and the greater Brockport community.” On Monday, February 6 at 7 p.m. at the Brockport Village Board meeting, the fifth annual award will be

presented to Suzanne A. Savard (“Sue”) for her leadership and labor in restoring and reviving the Emily L. Knapp Museum at 49 State Street in Brockport. The Selection Committee, citing “so many strong, supportive letters,” said in its report, “The Brockport area has a museum to be proud of because Sue has performed countless hours of creative planning, follow-up, and downon-your-knees hard work.” The report noted that she had received a Certificate of Merit from the 2014 Selection Committee for the earlier phase of her work. “I have enjoyed doing this project and never expected

praise or reward,” Savard said. “Monika Andrews was an amazing woman and spent countless hours volunteering for different causes. I am so touched to be considered in her league.” Members of the Selection Committee are: Linda Ketchum representing the Village of Brockport; Robert Westbrook representing the Town of Sweden; and Chrys Gross representing the Town of Clarkson. Editor’s Note: A separate article in this issue describes the work of Savard and other volunteers at the Emily L. Knapp Museum.

Seventy-three Brockport students inducted into National Honor Society The Brockport High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 73 new members during a ceremony held January 9 in the high school auditorium. This year’s induction ceremony marked a new milestone as it was the first year Brockport 10th-grade students were eligible to join NHS. Advisors elected to open the application process to 10th-graders to encourage school and community involvement and academic excellence. The evening began with greetings and remarks by High School Principal Dr. Brian Weller, then National Honor Society advisors Patricia Arnold and Rebecca Barrett provided an update on NHS successes throughout the past year and opportunities that lie ahead. The event continued with the main address, presented by Monroe County Court Judge Victoria Argento, followed by speeches from current NHS officers centering on the

four pillars upon which the National Honor Society is built: character, scholarship, service and leadership. Inductees were then given their certificates before Dr. Weller led new and current NHS members in the recitation of the NHS pledge. The evening concluded with a reception for students, teachers and family members to celebrate their tremendous accomplishment. New inductees: Aaron Albrecht, Doralis Allen, Lindsay Allen, Kylie Baker, Isaac Barrett, Andrea Beadling, Tessa Beaulieu, Jordyn Bombay, Sophie Carpenter, Mackenzie Carter, Ariana Cleveland, Morgan Costello, Carson Daly, Matthew Dambra, Charlie Danielak, Tiana D’Aries, Jacob Davies, Regan Eldridge, Madelyn Fadale, Molly Falkenstein, Madison Frost, Shay Gauthier, Natalie Gluck, Rowan Grady, Sheridan Grady, Zoë Haines, Jared Hardies, Andrew
