Salvatore’s new Churchville location opening January 6 The Salvatore’s Pizza Family is opening a new location at 48 South Main Street, Churchville. A Ribbon Cutting Celebration is scheduled for Monday, January 6, at 3 p.m., with an official location Grand Opening at 4 p.m.

This new Salvatore’s location features dine-in seating with giant TVs, beer and wine, and a large slice display. It will be open for dine-in, take-out and delivery.

Kayla Kent-Moreira will be the franchisee Owner/Operator of this new location. Kayla has been with the Salvatore’s Pizza Family since 2012, and is currently also Salvatore’s President of Business Operations and CFO. Kayla and her husband, Marcelo Moreira, will operate the Churchville location along with family, friends, and a crew of staff. Kayla will be Salvatore’s second female owner within the brand.

“I am thrilled to bring Salvatore’s Pizza to the village of Churchville,” said Kayla Kent-Moreira. “My hope is that this location offers not just the Salvatore’s Famous Full Menu that we all love but also creates an experience that brings people together, one slice at a time!”

Kayla has three children, Jilliana, Thiago and Gabriella, and two stepchildren, Igor and Pedro. She also owns More Keepers, a high-level goalkeeper program that her husband Marcelo runs. Kayla has worked for Salvatore SoccerSam Fantauzzo since since 2012, assisting with the Rochester Lancers and Rochester Lady Lancers soccer teams, and helping with the expansion of Salvatore’s Pizza over the last 13 years. Over the last few years, Kayla’s role has developed into an essential part of the Salvatore’s Pizza and Donuts Delite operations.

Acting as President of Business Operations and CFO, Kayla handles all finances, the marketing and franchising departments, and day-to-day operations with franchisees, vendors, partners, and media. She is the jack of all trades, and is excited to now

add another venture to her resume: Franchisee Owner/Operator of the Churchville Salvatore’s Pizza.

The Play 60 Program is a five month health and wellness program designed to promote well-rounded positive physical and mental health for fifth through eighth grade students in Buffalo and Rochester. There is a new challenge each month that supports a healthy lifestyle. It began with a focus on being active for at least 60 minutes each day throughout November. Students had the opportunity to track their activities each day and the chance to be eligible to win tickets to the Bills vs. Jets game on December 29 at Highmark Stadium, including an on-field recognition during the pre-game. First Day Hikes: An active start to the new year

Genesee Land Trust invited people of all ages and abilities for a special January 1st cocoa toast to celebrate the return of the fisher to Brookdale Preserve in Chili. The fisher – a very important member of the forest – was once hunted nearly to extinction for its thick dark fur.

But now, thanks to decades of conservation, they’re finally starting to be seen again. The walk started on the Genesee Valley Greenway Trail at Brook Road with over 100 participants that could hike at their own pace up to four miles towards Black Creek, learning more about the fisher from signs posted along the way. Donations of nonperishable items were also collected at the event for the state’s food drive.

The Village of Brockport offered two First Day events through the On The Canals program. Inclusive Birding on the Canal was the morning walk and Inclusive Snowshoeing on the Erie Canal was offered in the afternoon. The snow didn’t cooperate but that didn’t stop people from coming out to hike instead. On the four-mile walk, participants were able to see the progress on the construction of the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge that will link the SUNY campus to the canal path. Photos by Karen Fien.

Predeceased by his great-great grandparents, Charles and Eileen Gerrish, and great grandmother Patricia Hannabach.

Survived by his parents, James Oswald and Heather (Kace) Smith; great grandparents Retha and Dale Tyo, along with his grandfather Dale Tyo Jr. (Elaine Roney), and grandmothers Valerie (David) Taylor, Debbie Monroe, and Lynn Oswald; siblings, Skye Donnovan, Brandon Dade, and Christopher Torthia, and sister Madalynn Dematteo; stepbrothers, Emmanuel Tines and Kae-cee Smith; his girlfriend, Giavanna Campbell, and her family; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Gianni’s life was a testament to the power of kindness and the depth of a thoughtful heart. His gentle spirit was a beacon of light that touched all who had the privilege to know him. It was on the sports fields that Gianni’s passion truly shone, as he relished the camaraderie and competition, forging lasting friendships along the way. Gianni’s love for animals reflected his all-encompassing empathy, as he extended his kindness to all living creatures.

•Adams, Susan M. “Sue,” died December 27, 2024. Sue was predeceased by her parents, Abraham and Marjorie Huurman and her brothers William and James. Sue is survived by her husband, David Adams; her children, Patricia (Edward) Blazak, Kathleen Ehrmentraut, Raymond Ehrmentraut Jr., Matthew (Alisha) Adams, Mark Adams, Michael Adams; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; her brother, John (Sue) Huurman; several brothers and sisters in law; several nieces and nephews. Sue was a loving wife of 42 years, a dedicated mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Sue completed her bachelor’s degree at SUNY Brockport and began her teaching career mostly within the Churchville-Chili School District. She shared her passion and love of learning with hundreds of students over the years.

Her Funeral Service was celebrated January 2, 2025 at St. Martin dePorres Church at St. Vincent DePaul, Churchville.

•Lenz, Edward Carl, died December 24, 2024, at age 69.

He is predeceased by his parents, Lois and Hubert Lenz, brothers, Ray and Tom. He is survived by his partner of 36 years, Linda Lenz; two daughters, Rachal (John) Mueller and Cheryl (Phil) Caccamise; stepchildren Rick, Chris, and Joel Henshaw; grandchildren, Landon, Louie, Chris, and Tara; great-grandchild, Emmalyne. He worked at Delphi for 30+ years. In retirement he owned several vending machines for the last 17 years.

Visitation and Prayer Service was held December 31 at Fowler Funeral Home Inc., Brockport. Interment will be held privately in Garland Cemetery in the Spring. Contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice in his memory.

•Rowell, Jennifer A., died December 25, 2024 at age 66. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald (2016); her parents, Jack and Ruby Welch; and her brother, David Welch. She is survived by her children, Zackary Rowell and Matthew Rowell; her brothers, Dr. Jeffrey (Kathleen) Welch, John Welch, and Bradley (Leigh) Welch; her sister-in-law, Trudy Welch; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends. Jennifer was an Executive Secretary for Eastman Kodak Company. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the Thousand Islands and Florida. She took great pride and pleasure in watching her sons play hockey.

•Comstock, Robert M., died December 26, 2024 at age 73.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dayton and Charlotte Comstock; and his father-in-law, Alfred Wood. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Debra (Wood) Comstock; his children, Steven (Crystal) Comstock, Jennifer (Kevin) Templin and Kevin Comstock; his grandchildren, Brayden and Kitt Comstock, Noah and Lucy Templin, and Jenny Comstock; his mother-in-law, Dolores Wood; his brothers, Gary (Barbara) Comstock and James (Kim) Comstock; and his sister, Karen Comstock. Robert was a Veteran of the US Army. He was employed by M&T Bank as an IT specialist for many years.

He owned a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle and was a member of the Gold Wing Group. He was a runner and a biker, and enjoyed kayaking on Lake Ontario.

•Delgado, Dianne F., died December 24, 2024 at age 84. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Rose Dickerson.

She is survived by her husband, David; her daughters, Debra Oakden (Sal), Deanna (Bobby) Townsend and Denise (Kevin) McCloskey; her grandchildren, Shane Gatz, Danielle (Jason) Ruffino, Shannon (Will) Kane, Krystal Kane, and Maddison Rhoden; and five great-grandchildren. Gloria was a Crossing Guard for the Town of Greece. She was a devout Catholic and her faith was most important to her. In her leisure she enjoyed listening to music, having ice cream by the beach, shopping, visiting casinos, and watching Hallmark movies.

•LaFlame, George E., died December 25, 2024 at age 86. He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen Davis. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Catherine LaFlame, and his siblings. George was a singer and song writer. He was a very talented musician and could play many instruments, including the bass, violin, guitar and drums. He performed in various country and western bands.

A Celebration of George’s life will be held at a future date to be announced, at the Hilton East Assisted Living Community, where he resided with Eileen. Paul K. Spindler Hilton – Paul K. Spindler, October 30, 1952 - December 16, 2024. Paul is predeceased by his parents, Olive & Kurt Spindler.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Maureen (Lacey) Spindler; children Sarah Spindler, Rebecca (David Richter) Spindler and Stephen Spindler; grandson Jack Richter; siblings William (Frances) Spindler and Christa (Michael) Leman; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

•Gilman, Arthur G., age 79, died December 26, 2024. Art was born April 28, 1945, in Rochester, the son of the late George and Clara (Seger) Gilman. Arthur was predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Gloria, his brother Fred, sister Jo, son Richard, daughter-in-law Joanne, and grandsons Richard and Matthew. He is survived by his children, Timothy Gilman, Arthur Gilman, Peter (Rose) Gilman, John (Erin Gieder) Bennet, Paulette (Pam) Stockwell; daughter-in-law Christine Gilman; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Art was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Holley and a farmer his whole life. He loved spending time at the public market. Art was a lifelong fan of old steam powered equipment and frequented steam shows and auctions in his younger days.

Arthur’s family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, 16650 State Route 31, Holley on Friday January 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. Interment in Parma Union Cemetery. •Steffen, Walter C. Jr., age 89, died December 28, 2024.

Brockport. He was born January 17, 1935, in Albion, a son of the late Walter C. Sr. and Ella (Curtis) Steffen. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his children, Debbie Steffen, Barbara Adolph, David and Dennis Steffen; grandson Jake Adolph; sisters Alice Steffen Schepler, Mary Steffen Herring. Walt is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Miriam “Dolly;” his children Dan Steffen, Doug (Rhonda) Steffen, Patti (Taras) Salamanca, Dale (Kathy) Steffen, Connie (Saul) Harrison, Susie (Ron) Kyle; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Halia; as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Walt was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church, the Kendall Fire Department and was on the Town of Kendall Planning Board for over 40 years. He was the 3rd generation to own and operate Steffen’s Farm in Kendall, which his grandfather started in 1908.

His Funeral Service was held January 4 at the Concordia Lutheran Church, Kendall. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Paid Prenatal Personal Leave among new employment laws in 2025 New York State had new employment laws go into effect on January 1, 2025. One of the new laws is Paid Prenatal Personal Leave (PPPL) for pregnant employees. The new law requires employers to provide at least 20 hours of paid time off in addition to the normal sick leave to female employees who are pregnant. All private-sector employers, regardless of size, are a part of the PPPL mandate.

The additional time off can be used to attend physical exams, medical procedures, and monitoring and testing.

The PPPL hours are automatically available for pregnant employees and the hours do not need to be accrued.

The PPPL hours must also be paid at the employee’s regular rate of pay.

The Paid Family Leave (PFL) program for employees in New York State also has some changes for 2025.

The PFL program allows employees to take 12 weeks of paid time off to bond with their new child. In 2025, those who take PFL will receive 67% of the New York State Average Weekly Wage which will increase to $1,757.19 in 2025. This means employees using Paid Family Leave will receive a maximum benefit of $1,177.32 each week.

Another employment change in 2025 is an increase to the minimum

Ogden artist opens second studio location in Fairport Stony Point Art Studio is hosting a ribbon cutting of its new 114 North Main Street, Fairport, location at noon on Friday, January 10. The studio is owned by Jeannine Pelusio who also operates a home studio in Ogden. Representatives from Rochester Accessible Adventures, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), NYS Canal Corporation, and the Village of Fairport will attend the ribbon cutting. The community is invited to stop by between noon and 3 p.m. to tour the accessible studio space, view a display of student artists’ work, and enjoy refreshments.

Stony Point Art Studio is a part of the NYPA and Canal Corporation’s On the Canals Accessibility Education Program, which kicked off this past summer. Stony Point Art Studio’s On the Canals programming is part of the intentional shift to ensuring more equitable access to recreation along the New York State Canal system. This new, fully accessible space in the village of Fairport continues the mission of providing expanded opportunities for people of all abilities in our local community.

This new location in Fairport will serve as a vibrant hub for artistic expression, offering a variety of classes tailored for children, adults, and homeschoolers. In addition, it is a gallery space for local artists to showcase their work, providing a platform to share their talents with the community. The gallery will host regular local artist exhibits, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant arts scene of the surrounding areas.

Hilton girls #1 in NYS; Mallory Heise breaks school scoring mark

by Warren Kozireski It was quite the week after Christmas for the Hilton girls basketball team as last year’s state Class AA runner-up was ranked first by the New York State Sportswriter’s Association in their first poll of the season and senior Mallory Heise broke the school record for career scoring on December 30 against rival Spencerport.

The Cadets won their third Section V title last season and advanced to the championship game before falling short, but have begun this season right where they left off. With a 53-37 victory over the Rangers, they improved to 5-0.

Heise set the school career scoring mark previously held by Cameron Graupman (1,557) on a baseline jump shot with 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The game was stopped for a brief celebration with her teammates.

“Definitely relief and just thankful for the Hilton community, my teammates and my coaches; the support they give me is unreal and I seriously couldn’t do it without them,” Mallory Heise said.

“I like where our defense is at; I think we’re only giving up 34 to 35 points per game,” Hilton head coach Dave Heise (Mallory’s uncle) said. “They (the players) have their perspective. The focus is to concentrate on our work.”

The Cadets already gave 14th state ranked Penfield their only loss of the season by 19 points in their second game of the season helping justify their state ranking as of December 25.

“Our slogan this year is ‘work hard in silence, let success make the noise.’ It’s going to get pretty noisy around us being a defending champion and we know that. It’s my job to help put the blinders on and they’ve been really great about that in practice.”

“We are a little undersized at times, but we’re trying to share responsibility on everything. I know Mal

is averaging 28 to 30 points per game, but it’s also about the little things. We chart loose balls; we chart deflections and putting a premium and value on all the little things that can make a big difference.”

The Cadets lost 1,000-point scorer Ella Clark and forward Leah Thompson, now playing almost ten minutes per game as a freshman at SUNY Brockport, from last year’s title-winning team, but are still embracing their early top ranking.

“We’re really grateful for that, but we also know that we’re not even playing our best basketball yet, so there’s a lot more achievements yet to come and it’s just one step on the ladder,” Mallory Heise said.

“I love wearing this jersey and I don’t want to miss a single second of this for the world, so I’m just really grateful for my teammates and everybody that surround me while I do it.”

Joey Logano named November 2024 Hickok Belt® Award Winner American professional stock car racing driver Joey Logano has been selected as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for November 2024. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). Logano was selected after locking up the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race, which took place at Phoenix Raceway.

He earned the 2024 Cup Series title in a suspense-filled ending to close out the year. In the final laps Logano held off Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney, who finished second in the race. Joey Logano became one of only five drivers in NASCAR history to win three Cup titles before the age of 35.

Other finalists for November in order of how the NSMA ranked them were: Lamar Jackson (football), Abdi Nageeye (running), Shella Chep-

Virtual platform offers ‘Winter Wellness’ initiative to empower older adults The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) is reminding older New Yorkers about its partnership with GetSetUp, an online platform offering wellness, educational, and social engagement opportunities designed specifically for older adults. This collaboration supports New Yorkers over 65 by helping them stay connected, digitally empowered, and physically and mentally healthy throughout the challenging winter season.

William “Bill” Polito Memorial Scholarship established A former Gates Chili High School student has established a scholarship fund to honor the memory of William “Bill” Polito, who was his teacher, mentor, and friend for 50 years.

The scholarship fund will be administered by the Rochester Area Community Foundation (RACF) and will provide one $1,500 annual award for an eligible Gates Chili student.

For 30 years, William “Bill” Polito taught English at the Gates Chili High School. He did not start college with the intent of becoming a teacher, but he was well read, smart, tenacious, loyal, and curious. He realized these traits would help guide him to a life he could be proud of and that would sustain his interests as life unfolded.

Bill spent much of his youth working jobs ranging from gas station attendant to working for trucking companies loading and unloading freight. He could have easily made a living in some of those jobs, but he wanted to be the first in his family to attend college. In 1960, he enrolled at Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota, with the thought of becoming a lawyer.

School was expensive, so he spent his summers and breaks working to save money to pay his tuition and living expenses.

It was during his college years that Bill became the individual and teacher that so many friends and students considered

one of their best. School wasn’t always easy because he had to work so hard to pay tuition and living expenses. Classwork would interfere with his job duties, but he persevered because he believed in his choices and made it work.

To offset living expenses, he roomed with people in similar situations, making many lifelong friends as a result. When a course was difficult, he worked the hours necessary to pass, and worked with his professors to make sure he was working at the necessary level.

As an English teacher, Bill had the opportunity to use his mind on a daily basis. All teachers must work with people from all levels of society, all levels of intelligence, and all personality types – this is where Bill found the most joy in teaching. He recognized that in every student there was a capable and successful individual with their own thoughts, hopes and dreams.

Bill valued all of his students, especially individuals others might have already given up on. A’s are nice to have, but a person is more than their grades. What is their background, what obstacles have they had to overcome, do they treat others with respect, do they work hard? Bill often reached out to these students to try and encourage their personal growth.

To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a graduating senior at Gates Chili High School who: •Has a cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher; •Is accepted into a post-secondary education program such as an accredited un- Bill Polito dergraduate, vocational, or technical post-secondary institution; •Demonstrates financial need; and •Is hardworking and demonstrates genuine empathy and perseverance.

Recycling your Christmas tree and other winter gardening tasks

By Kristina Gabalski Happy New Year! As the year begins, gardeners can enjoy a time of rest, preparation, and even some outdoor chores that help prepare for the coming growing season. But first, here are some suggestions of ways to recycle/repurpose your real holiday tree.

Dr. Elizabeth Lamb of the NYS IPM Program at Cornell University says there is always the option of keeping your tree up through the winter months. To stay in good condition, the tree especially needs lots of water and a reservoir that holds at least a gallon of water. It also helps if the tree is in a cooler spot in the house, away from heat sources or fireplaces.

If you are ready to take your tree down, or if it has dried out and needs to be removed, Dr. Lamb says your tree can be put outside as a place of shelter for birds. You can just place it on the ground in a spot where it will not blow away in high winds, or stake it near a bird feeding station. It can be decorated with suet and bird food, or left to provide a place of safety for birds. Out in the cold, the tree holds up well for several weeks.

You can cut the branches off and use them as ground-cover/mulch/winter protection on your garden areas. The branches help to protect against frost heaving and can acidify soil. Dr. Lamb says your municipality may offer tree mulching and you might even be able to get the mulch back for your garden.

Consider creating a winter fort/play area in your yard with your tree if you have young children or young visitors.

Goats and pigs will eat evergreens.

If you know someone with livestock, you may be able to spread Christmas cheer into the new year for animal friends.

Regarding winter in the garden, Penn State University Extension says there are many activities to keep you busy during the off-season. Winter is a great time for planning as seed and plant catalogs arrive. Research plant varieties you are interested in growing and determine what you will need for the harvests you would like. Paper notebooks or online tools can help you map out and plan your garden and landscape.

Check over your gardening equipment and supplies. Decide if you will be starting some seeds inside and if you will want peat pots, plastic trays, or other containers. Think about the seed starter medium you plan to use and check seed starting light sources to see if new bulbs are needed. Some seeds, such as onions and leeks, can be started as early as February. If you have not yet done so, clean and repair garden tools. Check the condition of tomato cages and other plant supports and purchase new items, if needed.

Make sure you have a good pair of gardening gloves and shoes/boots that will protect hands and feet. Sharpen tools like clippers so that they are ready when you need them.

On winter walks, note dead limbs and branches and prune them back.

If you see exposed crowns of perennial plants, push them back into the ground. Look for large animal and rodent damage on tree trunks, making sure protective plastic and wire trunk guards are secure. Adjust or replace as needed.

Legal NoticeS Legal Notice Town of Parma 2025 Town and County Tax Collection PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that I, Carrie Fracassi, Tax Receiver for the Town of Parma, upon receipt of the warrant for the collection of Town and County taxes on property within the Town of Parma for the year 2025, will receive payments at the Parma Town Hall, 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road, P. O. Box 728, Hilton, New York.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A 24-hour drop box is available at the front of the Town Hall Building to help facilitate the collection of taxes. *Not receiving your Tax Bill does not absolve you of your obligation to pay your bill in a timely fashion. If you do not receive your Tax Bill, please contact the Receiver of Taxes by calling 585-3929461 or visit monroecounty.gov under the view/pay tax link on their home page for tax information including bills and receipts** Payment Instructions General and By Mail Information for all Payments: •Payments with a legible valid U. S. postmark dated on or before the payment due date will be used to determine the date of payment. Tax payments delivered by the U.S. Postal Service after the due date that do not contain an official U.S. Postmark but rather contain a “postage meter” mark are not considered timely.

•Allow extra time for Direct Payment Checks (often used for online banking) to arrive. Most banks discourage the use of on-line banking for tax payments because they cannot guarantee your payment will be delivered to our office by the due date and these payments DO NOT contain a postmark. If you utilize on-line banking, you do so at your own risk.

•Payments for incorrect amount paid and/or not received in a timely manner will incur interest and penalties.

•Payments will be accepted on the next business day, when the last day of a payment period falls on a nonbusiness day (weekend, holiday).

•Payments by credit card or electronic check will be accepted via the internet only at www.monroecounty.gov.

Select “view/pay taxes online”. Then follow the prompts to retrieve your account information and make payment. Payments made by credit card will incur a service fee. This option is available for Full and Installment Payments only.
