Training to be Iron Women Four Hilton moms are training to compete together in the grueling Ironman Louisville this October by Grace Griffee Christine Burkey-Kelly never played a sport in high school, hated the gym and, in fact, was the last one picked for team sports. Her classmates should see her now. Burkey-Kelly, along with three of her friends, are training to compete in the Ironman Louisville in Kentucky on October 11. The combined 140.6-mile race begins with a 2.4-mile swim in the Ohio River, followed by an 112-mile bike race through scenic Kentucky and lastly, a 26.2-mile run, which is a full marathon. Ironman competitions are widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. It all started about eight years ago. The birth of Burkey-Kelly’s son, Reece, now 10, left her with about 10 pounds to lose, so she started biking. Even though she never considered herself a runner and didn’t even know how to put her face in the water, it wasn’t long before Burkey-Kelly was training for her first Sprint Triathalon - a .47-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. “My friend, 69-year-old Carl Grimm, was waiting for me at the finish line,” said Burkey-Kelly. “But I was hooked and have built upon my training every year since. Needless to say, I lost the weight.” Last year, Burkey-Kelly ran her first marathon with the intention of trying to qualify to run the Boston Marathon in April. She asked three of her friends that if she qualified, would they try to qualify too so that they could train and run together. They took on the challenge and shortly after, Burkey-Kelly asked her friends to challenge themselves even further. “I decided that I wanted to attempt my first Ironman triathlon,” said Burkey-Kelly. “To be able to tackle such an incredible feat would require a lot of support, not just from my family, but from my friends as well. So I decided to ask that same group of friends to commit to doing an Ironman with me the same year.” “She’s a good salesperson,” said Patty Pirnie, who agreed to the six months of
training with Burkey-Kelly, along with Lisa Camillaci and Terry Christo. Ranging in age from 41 to 61 years of age, the women are all mothers and have jobs. “The training, which ranges from 14 to 20 hours a week, is like a part time job,” said Pirnie. Luckily, they all have flexible work schedules and support from home to make the long training hours possible. “I have always looked at the distance as crazy and doubted my ability to complete an Ironman, so when Christine asked me to join her, Patty and Lisa in their endeavor I was a little scared to say yes,” said Christo. “But with their encouragement and support and belief in my ability I decided to take on the challenge.” “Since meeting these ladies it’s been one crazy idea after another,” said Camillaci, who just purchased her first Triathlon bike last year. The bike allows for the rider to lock special shoes into the pedals so that their legs can pull up as well as push down on the pedals. “When the opportunity of the Ironman arose, it was one I just couldn’t pass up. I know it’s going to be my biggest challenge yet, but with my training partners and my family I know I will make it happen.” Pirnie is the only one of the four who has competed in an Ironman before. She took on the Ironman Lake Placid in 2006 and qualified for the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii on her first try. The mother of four children ranging in age from 15 to 22, Pirnie said her kids grew up thinking that everyone’s family went on vacations to compete in triathlons and marathons. “It’s just part of our family’s lifestyle,” she said. Pirnie’s husband, Alex, plans the women’s training schedule one month at a time. They swim, run or bike six days a week. Morning swims begin at 6 a.m. and usually take place at the Braddock’s Bay Marina on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The women wear wetsuits, which provide protection against the chilly water and buoyancy too. Workouts take place at L.A. Fitness in Greece and the Rochester area offers many options for scenic, long bike rides.
The team enjoys pleasant weather during a 60-mile training ride around Canandaigua Lake recently. Shown are (l-r) Lisa Camillaci, Terry Christo, Patty Pirnie and Christine BurkeyKelly. (Top) Burkey-Kelly decided to run her first marathon last year with the intention of trying to qualify to run the Boston Marathon. She and a group of friends all qualified and ran the marathon, and are now training for the Ironman Louisville that will take place on October 11. (Right)
In addition to training, the women say they all eat very healthy in general, but don’t neglect to reward themselves with a glass of wine or ice cream cone on occasion. “You have to eat food that’s going to fuel you,” said Pirnie. In October, the group will travel to Louisville with their families and have rented a house together for their stay. In addition to the cost of equipment, the registration for an Ironman usually runs $400 to $600, plus travel costs, so it’s not only a time commitment, but a monetary one as well.
The team agrees that the journey has been worth it so far. “I’m extremely blessed to have all three of these amazing women join me on this incredible adventure,” said Burkey-Kelly. “I hope we all make our families proud and our children learn from our hard work and determination.” “Hopefully we continue to stay healthy and strong through our training because I am looking forward to the finish line, seeing my friends waiting for me and hearing that long awaited call out of ‘Terry, You Are an Ironman!’ ”

Firefighter receives recognition
Each week, 52 weeks a year, the area’s “Best Read” local newspaper, Suburban News or The Herald, is brought to you free of charge.
At the first annual Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District Banquet held at the Clarendon Recreation Hall, Robert Klafehn was recognized and honored for his 50 years of active volunteer fire service to the Walker Fire Department. Klafehn held several jobs over the years: secretary for 21 years, board member, fire police officer. Klafehn recalls the old days when he went on a call and rode on the back of the truck. Robert said when he joined, the Department had a chalk board in front of the fire hall. He was the first one there, and with no home pagers, only the fire whistle, he would write on the board where the fire was and what truck should go. Then he would go on the last truck out. At the banquet Robert Klafehn received a standing ovation and received a ring from the Walker Fire Department for 50 years of volunteer active service.
Suggestion: If you are in a windy area, it would help if you put a piece of duct tape on the back of the tube to prevent the paper from blowing out.

St. Luke’s Brockport celebrates community with annual Book Sale St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is celebrating community with the church’s annual book sale Thursday through Saturday, July 9, 10 and 11, in the Parish Hall, 14 State Street, Brockport. The book sale has a long history and has become a sort of tradition at St. Luke’s. Bev Walker, Shirley Seever and Ricki DeBaun, all long-time members of St. Luke’s, have headed up the church’s annual sale for decades. “The first year or two we got rained on, so we moved the books to the pews in the sanctuary. Eventually we moved the sale to the Parish Hall,” says Bev. “We enjoy our time working together on the sale. Everyone’s heart is in the book sale and in St. Luke’s.” It takes three or four sessions of sorting the books into categories to get things ready for the three-day event. “The people who come to the sale appreciate that we sort the books by genre and author,” says Bev. “People come back to the sale year after year, and we get to talk about what books we’re reading. We have a lot of fun. My
Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - July 5, 2015 5
favorite part of the sale, though, is seeing the children coming in and picking out their books. Reading is a good foundation for children. I ask them if they’d like their books put in a bag of their own that they can carry themselves, and they always do. We love people,” says Bev, speaking of the book sale team. Their commitment to St. Luke’s and their love for people shows, and it seems that others can’t help but respond. Although the book sale’s primary goal may be fundraising, it also serves as an important outreach to the community. “We have had people come to church at St. Luke’s because they first came to our book sale,” says Bev. “I sang in the choir for years, but when I felt I wasn’t able to do that any longer, I needed another way of giving back to St. Luke’s. The book sale helps me to do just that. There are many ministry opportunities here. Everybody has a place at St. Luke’s,” says Bev. For information about the sale, contact St. Luke’s at (585) 637-6650. Provided information

Circular Sock Knitting Machine Society seeking socks and other knitted items for veterans by Kristina Gabalski
Circular sock knitting machines came into prominence one hundred years ago and were used in the home to make socks for overseas troops during World War I. Members of a group knitting socks and other ‘keep warm’ items use similar machines, according to Carol Gursslin, president of a group of volunteers creating items for veterans in need. K. July 9-12 from 10am-5pm
Carol Gursslin of Hilton has a goal this summer: To amass one hundred pairs of new hand or machine knitted socks - plus hats and scarves - to donate to the Mountain States Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America (MSCPVA). “It’s cold where they live, they need them,” Carol says of the vets who live in the states of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. Carol is the current president of the Circular Sock Knitting Machine Society (CSKMS) which will hold its annual conference - “Socks in the Rockies” - August 1, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. The knitted socks for veterans are part of the “Head Over Heels for Vets” charitable project which CSKMS began in 2013. Many CSKMS members use antique circular sock knitting machines which Carol explains came into prominence one hundred years ago and were used in the home, “.... to make socks for overseas troops during World War I,” she explains. Soldiers fighting in the war were suffering from trench foot and desperately needed new, dry socks. “The socks were sent by the Red Cross overseas,” Carol says. Making and donating socks (as well as hats and scarves) to veterans seemed a perfect project for the circular sock knitting group, Carol observes, and is a way for members to honor those who have served in the armed forces. Last year, the annual conference was held in nearby Geneseo and 95 hats, scarves and socks were made and

donated to veterans at Canandaigua Veterans’ Hospital. On a recent rainy Saturday morning, Carol met a group of local knitters at Amelia’s Fabric and Yarn Shoppe in Hilton to talk about the project and to make items to be donated. She is appreciative of the support provided by Nancy Vorndran, owner of Amelia’s. “I can’t say enough about her and her generosity,” Carol says. Carol explains that when she travels to Denver, Al Jones, a retired Army reservist there, will accept the sock/hat/scarf donations on behalf of the MSCPVA during a luncheon at the conference. She says that Jones was an instructor with Iraqi police forces when his unit was hit with an IED that killed some and left Al with near fatal spinal injuries. The MSCPVA, “strives to make the lives of veterans affected by spinal cord injury and dysfunction as close as possible to the lives of those not impacted by these lifechanging events. Our programs support members through advocacy, public education and recreational events,” the group’s mission statement says. Jones will then distribute the donations to veterans in need. Donated items are wrapped in three-inch wide bands and marked with size, gender and washing instructions. Carol says acrylic yarn is recommended for the socks for ease of care. To find out more about the program contact Carol at cgurssli@rochester.rr.com or go to: www.ravelry.com/ events/head-over-heels-for-vets or www.cskms.org.

November 23, 1982 was the issue date of Suburban News. In that issue one could find advertisements from some businesses that are still a facet of their communities. They included Page Appliances, Barnard Chevrolet, Arndt Funeral Home, D’Angelo’s Plumbing & Heating, The Glue Factory, The Unique Shop, Salmon Creek Country Club, Brockport Carpet, Naughton’s Johnson House, Viking Valhalla Room and Sullivan’s Char Broil. Most businesses advertising in that edition of Suburban News no longer exist. All but two of those businesses named above are still operated by the same people or family as in 1982. Over 32 years is a long time to be in business. In that November 23, 1982 edition of Suburban News one could also find a story with a freelance writer’s first by-line. The story was headlined Churchville Students Lost In Books and it was written by Evelyn Dow. She wrote about Churchville Elementary School students Ernest Smith, Tom Hetherington, Kelley Moore, Angela Mull, Bradley Melvin, David Coates, Robert Vordran, Mandy Decker, Katie Tavner, Lesley Northrup, Gina Donato, Sandy Morris and Cheryl Jackling and their book reports generated in observance of National Children’s Book Week. The students were members of the classes taught by Doris Joy and Andrea Chochul. In the months to come, Evelyn would write about Ogden Town Historian Shirley Nixon, retiring Ogden Town Justice Roy Burley and Robert and Linda Bourns Reusch, who had purchased the Avon Inn the same month Evelyn began at Suburban News. In February of 1983 we learned that the Spencerport School District had 25 Apple II microcomputers being used in classrooms, thanks to a story written by the future editor. The following week Evelyn wrote that students in the Hilton School District had been using computers since the late 1970s. In what was described as the last in the series on computers being used in classrooms, Evelyn wrote about James Friedland, a science teacher at Churchville-Chili High School, and how he produced a high school physics program for computers. According to Harold Hefke, then Churchville-Chili’s assistant Superintendent for Instruction, computers had been a part of the Math Department since about 1977. Later that year Evelyn continued the series on computers with a discussion of the benefits of computers for Special Ed students. Louis Grammatico, BOCES Special Education teacher at Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton, talked about the improvement in attendance in his class in order to earn computer time. February of that year saw Evelyn writing about the importance of Valentine’s Day to then Hilton Mayor Larry Gursslin and his wife Carol and Hilton residents Mary and Ray Verney, who would be celebrating their 58th Anniversary that April. People’s TV: Anyone Can Be A Star the headline read for an article on public access TV. In two articles on successive weeks readers discovered what Group W was doing in Parma and Ogden for public access while Cable 12 W was providing 30 to 40 hours of local programming a week in Greece, Gates and Chili. Later in the year Group W Cable TV announced that they were opening a satellite office in Spencerport with staff coming from their Brockport office and Evelyn wrote about the struggle for the cable company to make it come together. School budgets in the 1980s were scary experiences for most districts. Evelyn wrote about the Spencerport School budget, for 1983-84 on which residents would vote, that carried a 7.23 percent increase. A home with an average assessment of $25,000 would see a $48.39 increase if it passed. Evelyn wrote about the four candidates for two board
Evelyn, The staff at the Westside News would like to say it has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with you at the paper. Your dedication and commitment to Westside News has been an inspiration to all of us. It is amazing how quicky the years have gone by, all of the changes that we have gone through, the friendships that we have made. We wish you all of the happiness in the world, and hope you know how much you will be missed by your Westside News family.
seats that year. They were Beverly Brust, Burton Judd, Charles “Sandy” McLellan and David Weaver. Along with the budget vote the Spencerport School Board was trying to decide the future for the Initial Teaching Alphabet (ITA) at Munn School. The board had voted to discontinue the program but at the next meeting the board was presented with a petition from parents who wanted the program to continue, while Linda Osowski spoke in favor of the program and how popular it had become with parents. Dr. Robert Sudlow, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, said that the program was the only reading program in the district where parents have an option. Dr. Sudlow saw that as being unfair to other parents who had no such choice in reading programs. Evelyn was always careful to provide a voice for both sides in an issue and the article on the ITA program was one such example of that. That desire for fairness was what guided her during the many election seasons. However, for some, the feeling is if you’re not with us you are against us. Then there was the article Evelyn wrote about a Spencerport school employee who, as a mother and grandmother, received her degree in elementary education from Brockport State University in the Spring of 1983. Thus was the story of Pat Dennis who was featured on Channel 13 news for her accomplishment. She credited her husband, Robert, and their four children aged 16 to 24 for their support of her efforts. Pat Dennis would be the teacher that Aaron Patella Ryan would have for third grade at Terry Taylor School. The story about his experiences as an employee of the New York Yankees graced a recent front page of this publication. When the Hilton United Methodist Church had begun construction, Evelyn was at the scene to bring us the story. Readers learned that the original 1884 church was destroyed by arson on August 10, 1981. Bernice Blossom was the chairperson of the building committee. In her first sports article Evelyn wrote about the upcoming opening day for Spencerport Junior Baseball in which Commissioner Tom O’Malley was to lead the Opening Ceremonies. Longtime SJB secretary, Steve Schockow, explained how sponsors were benefitted with their $75 donation. According to O’Malley, the previous year’s budget had totaled $25,000. Evelyn also provided relevant articles for special sections produced by the Suburban News. She wrote that interior decorators stressed country-look designs in an article for our home furnishings guide in the Spring of 1983. For an article headlined A Bit ‘O The Irish at McGinnity’s, which Evelyn did for a St. Patrick’s Day Special Section, a future freelance contributor was pictured by the name of Margaret McGinnity, who now is known as Maggie Fitzgibbon. Evelyn’s freelance career continued in this fashion until she was named editor beginning with the September 11, 1984 edition of Suburban News. Her list of contributing writers at that time included Barbara Carder, Herb MacNaughton and Nathan Pyles. As the longest-serving editor in the more than 60-year history of Suburban News/Westside News, Evelyn Dow was responsible for the growth in the credibility of the material found in the pages of our publications. She has left some large shoes to fill. We hope that we will be able to continue to provide our readers as they have experienced in the nearly 31 years that the task was being handled by Evelyn. We all wish Evelyn nothing but happiness in her years ahead. Keith Ryan Publisher

Brockport Rotary holds Changeover Dinner The Brockport Rotary Club was fortunate to have the new area 7120 District Governor Bill Gormont and his wife Helen attend the Changeover Dinner event at Salmon Creek Country Club. Gormont addressed the attendees at the beginning about Rotary future goals and helped present awards and with the changing of the “guard.” Notable was the club’s third Paul Harris presentation of the year to incoming president elect Eric Jensen of Brockport (Cort Fowler received one just prior to his passing and his son Cort Jr. received one from his Dad in July – both
now deceased.) Gene Wood and DG Gormont elaborated on the history and importance of the honor - more specifically the good use made of the monetary resources raised via the award. The club’s Irv Kropman Award for Club Service went to Doris Russo of Brockport. Recognition also went to the club’s longest serving member (45 years) Gene Wood, who serves as Club Historian, and to Norm Knight for 31 years of perfect attendance and who is active in every club activity. The outgoing club president Cindy Blair received a gavel plaque and past president’s pin. Provided information
