Training to be Iron Women Four Hilton moms are training to compete together in the grueling Ironman Louisville this October training with Burkey-Kelly, along with Lisa Camillaci and Terry Christo. Ranging in age from 41 to 61 years of age, the women are all mothers and have jobs. “The training, which ranges from 14 to 20 hours a week, is like a part time job,” said Pirnie. Luckily, they all have flexible work schedules and support from home to make the long training hours possible. “I have always looked at the distance as crazy and doubted my ability to complete an Ironman, so when Christine asked me to join her, Patty and Lisa in their endeavor I was a little scared to say yes,” said Christo. “But with their encouragement and support and belief in my ability I decided to take on the challenge.” “Since meeting these ladies it’s been one crazy idea after another,” said Camillaci, who just purchased her first Triathlon bike last year. The bike allows for the rider to lock special shoes into the pedals so that their legs can pull up as well as push down on the pedals. “When the opportunity of the Ironman arose, it was one I just couldn’t pass up. I know it’s going to be my biggest challenge yet, but with my training partners and my family I know I will make it happen.” Pirnie is the only one of the four who has competed in an Ironman before. She took on the Ironman Lake Placid in 2006 and qualified for the World Championships in Kona, Hawaii on her first try. The mother of four children ranging in age from 15 to 22, Pirnie said her kids grew up thinking that everyone’s family went on vacations to compete in triathlons and marathons. “It’s just part of our family’s lifestyle,” she said. Pirnie’s husband, Alex, plans the women’s training schedule one month at a time. They swim, run or bike six days a week. Morning swims begin at 6 a.m. and usually take place at the Braddock’s Bay Marina on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The women wear wetsuits, which provide protection against the chilly water and buoyancy too. Workouts take place at L.A. Fitness in Greece and the Rochester area offers many options for scenic, long bike rides.
by Grace Griffee Christine Burkey-Kelly never played a sport in high school, hated the gym and, in fact, was the last one picked for team sports. Her classmates should see her now. Burkey-Kelly, along with three of her friends, are training to compete in the Ironman Louisville in Kentucky on October 11. The combined 140.6-mile race begins with a 2.4-mile swim in the Ohio River, followed by an 112-mile bike race through scenic Kentucky and lastly, a 26.2-mile run, which is a full marathon. Ironman competitions are widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. It all started about eight years ago. The birth of Burkey-Kelly’s son, Reece, now 10, left her with about 10 pounds to lose, so she started biking. Even though she never considered herself a runner and didn’t even know how to put her face in the water, it wasn’t long before Burkey-Kelly was training for her first Sprint Triathalon - a .47-mile swim, 12.4-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. “My friend, 69-year-old Carl Grimm, was waiting for me at the finish line,” said Burkey-Kelly. “But I was hooked and have built upon my training every year since. Needless to say, I lost the weight.” Last year, Burkey-Kelly ran her first marathon with the intention of trying to qualify to run the Boston Marathon in April. She asked three of her friends that if she qualified, would they try to qualify too so that they could train and run together. They took on the challenge and shortly after, Burkey-Kelly asked her friends to challenge themselves even further. “I decided that I wanted to attempt my first Ironman triathlon,” said Burkey-Kelly. “To be able to tackle such an incredible feat would require a lot of support, not just from my family, but from my friends as well. So I decided to ask that same group of friends to commit to doing an Ironman with me the same year.” “She’s a good salesperson,” said Patty Pirnie, who agreed to the six months of

The team enjoys pleasant weather during a 60-mile training ride around Canandaigua Lake recently. Shown are (l-r) Lisa Camillaci, Terry Christo, Patty Pirnie and Christine BurkeyKelly. (Top) Burkey-Kelly decided to run her first marathon last year with the intention of trying to qualify to run the Boston Marathon. She and a group of friends all qualified and ran the marathon, and are now training for the Ironman Louisville that will take place on October 11. (Right)
In addition to training, the women say they all eat very healthy in general, but don’t neglect to reward themselves with a glass of wine or ice cream cone on occasion. “You have to eat food that’s going to fuel you,” said Pirnie. In October, the group will travel to Louisville with their families and have rented a house together for their stay. In addition to the cost of equipment, the registration for an Ironman usually runs $400 to $600, plus travel costs, so it’s not only a time commitment, but a monetary one as well.
The team agrees that the journey has been worth it so far. “I’m extremely blessed to have all three of these amazing women join me on this incredible adventure,” said Burkey-Kelly. “I hope we all make our families proud and our children learn from our hard work and determination.” “Hopefully we continue to stay healthy and strong through our training because I am looking forward to the finish line, seeing my friends waiting for me and hearing that long awaited call out of ‘Terry, You Are an Ironman!’ ”

Governor Cuomo issues plan to advance renewable energy Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced an ambitious plan to curb New York state’s carbon emissions by 40 percent by doubling the amount of power it gets from renewable energy to 50 percent, by 2030. The pollution reduction and clean energy targets would be the most ambitious in
the nation, matched only by California. The plan comes as the United States Environmental Protection Agency gets ready to release the final Clean Power Plan, the nation’s first limit on global warming pollution from power plants, later this summer.
Protect your small business from cyber crime (StatePoint) Network breaches at corporate giants typically make headlines, but nearly half of small and mid-sized businesses have been victims of cybercrime on America’s Main Street. And “the bigger they are, the harder they fall” doesn’t apply. Big companies often survive to fight another day, but many smaller businesses go out of business within six months of an attack. “While network breaches at Sony, Target and Anthem grab the spotlight, nearly 44 percent of small businesses have already been affected by cyber attacks,” says Corey Nachreiner, chief technology officer at WatchGuard, a cyber security company. “Hackers are zeroing in on your favorite burger joint, the corner hardware store and your dentist. Every small business is a target.” Small and mid-sized businesses often have limited resources to devote to network security, and typically have smaller safety nets. But four simple steps can help such businesses secure their valuable data and help keep their customers’ information safe: •Software patches: This is one of the most important steps a small business can take. More than 90 percent of Internet exploits leverage old flaws. Take advantage of free software updates from manufacturers to
patch your operating system and other applications, and apply firmware updates to your hardware. •Upgrade your protection: Despite sophisticated new cyber threats, many small businesses still rely on basic firewall technology. Advanced security devices include next-generation firewalls and unified threat management appliances that are designed to stop today’s broad array of attacks. What’s more, these technologies are now cost-effective and easy for small businesses to manage. •Strong password policy: Make sure you and your employees use strong passwords, and that the same one isn’t used everywhere. Adopting a password manager for your organization is an easy way to help employees use effective passwords and keep them safe. •Awareness training: All the defenses in the world may not prevent an employee from making a silly mistake. Train your employees on Internet safety so they’re wary of attachments or links in emails, even if they seem to come from people they trust. Three summery ways to improve your health (StatePoint) For the health conscious, there’s no such thing as a summer vacation from making good nutritional choices and getting plenty of exercise. But there’s no reason to let a healthy lifestyle become boring. Here are three ways to let the summer season guide your routine: •Mix Up Movement: After months of indoor exercise, you may be ready for a change of scenery. And summer is the ideal time to take a break from the treadmill and incorporate different types of movement and exercise into your lifestyle. So ditch the gym this weekend and head for greener pastures. From row boating to hiking, you’ll find yourself activating different muscles than you normally would by mixing things up. •Eat In-Season Produce: Take advantage of the summer harvest and plan meals around in-season produce. The USDA lists apples, beets, bell peppers, kiwifruit, carrots, garlic, peaches, okra and cherries, amongst many more fruits and vegetables that reach their peak in the summer months. These items are full of vitamins and nutrients
and taste their best in summer. •Summer Sun: Beyond the Vitamin D factor, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology shows that sunlight may lower blood pressure, which could reduce one’s risk for heart attack and stroke. Some researchers now say the benefits of sunlight could outweigh cancer risks associated with exposure. Don’t forget to take the usual precautions, however. Wear sunglasses, sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat to protect against harmful UV radiation.

St. Luke’s Brockport celebrates community with annual Book Sale St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is celebrating community with the church’s annual book sale Thursday through Saturday, July 9, 10 and 11, in the Parish Hall, 14 State Street, Brockport. The book sale has a long history and has become a sort of tradition at St. Luke’s. Bev Walker, Shirley Seever and Ricki DeBaun, all long-time members of St. Luke’s, have headed up the church’s annual sale for decades. “The first year or two we got rained on, so we moved the books to the pews in the sanctuary. Eventually we moved the sale to the Parish Hall,” says Bev. “We enjoy our time working together on the sale. Everyone’s heart is in the book sale and in St. Luke’s.” It takes three or four sessions of sorting the books into categories to get things ready for the three-day event. “The people who come to the sale appreciate that we sort the books by genre and author,” says Bev. “People come back to the sale year after year, and we get to talk about what books we’re reading. We have a lot of fun. My
Suburban News North and South Editions - July 5, 2015 5
favorite part of the sale, though, is seeing the children coming in and picking out their books. Reading is a good foundation for children. I ask them if they’d like their books put in a bag of their own that they can carry themselves, and they always do. We love people,” says Bev, speaking of the book sale team. Their commitment to St. Luke’s and their love for people shows, and it seems that others can’t help but respond. Although the book sale’s primary goal may be fundraising, it also serves as an important outreach to the community. “We have had people come to church at St. Luke’s because they first came to our book sale,” says Bev. “I sang in the choir for years, but when I felt I wasn’t able to do that any longer, I needed another way of giving back to St. Luke’s. The book sale helps me to do just that. There are many ministry opportunities here. Everybody has a place at St. Luke’s,” says Bev. For information about the sale, contact St. Luke’s at (585) 637-6650. Provided information

“Land Before Stories” is the theme for the Summer Reading Game at the Newman Riga Library. The game begins July 6 and continues through August 13. The primary game for school-aged children through age 12 will be played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. The more they read, the greater their chances for prizes. Preschool-aged children will also participate in an independent reading program with a parent, maintaining a log and presenting it at the conclusion of the program will result in a packet of prizes. Young adults are encouraged to read whatever books they choose, allowing them to apply their requisite reading for school to the game - for prizes. Scheduled programs for area youngsters will include Bingo at 3 p.m. on July 9; Monroe County K-9 Unit at 3 p.m. on July 14; Adventures in Chemistry at 3 p.m. on July 21; Hero from a Jail Cell at 3 p.m. on July 28; and Fire Engine at 3 p.m. on August 4. A Bagel Party is planned at the conclusion of the Summer Reading program for all non-adult participants on Thursday, August 13 with extra prize drawings. Must be present to receive prizes. America. “Our fully accessible treehouse provides a unique ‘climbing experience’ for thousands of kids with special abilities who have never felt the independence or joy of climbing a tree or of playing in a treehouse,” said Rochester Rotary President Tracy Armstrong. The newest addition to the Rochester campus is named “My Treehouse” to allow each camper to feel personal ownership and pride about the treehouse. More than 100 campers, camper families, and current and former camp staff have their names permanently placed on the treehouse for donating or raising at least $100 to help build it. The Treehouse Guys, a nationally renowned firm that has constructed accessible treehouses across the country, designed and built the treehouse. A new, national television series on the DIY Network − also called “The Treehouse Guys” − will feature the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Campus treehouse on an upcoming episode to be broadcast later this year.

“Chick” Schum inducted into Section Five Baseball Hall of Fame The late Harold E. “Chick” Schum, longtime Spencerport High School coach and Athletic Director, was inducted into the Section Five Baseball Hall of Fame on June 28, 2015 at Frontier Field. Schum began his career at Spencerport in 1935 and coached baseball until 1958. He also coached soccer and basketball. He grew up in Attica, New York and graduated from Ithaca College where he was a catcher and also played soccer and football. In Schum’s senior year at Ithaca, his classmate, Edson “Ike” Kincaid, advised him that Spencerport had a Physical Education and Coaching job available but he did not want to apply since his father, Charles Kincaid, was a member of the School Board and Ike’s appointment would be perceived as nepotism. The story ends with Schum at Spencerport for his career and Ike at Cuba, New York for his lifetime position. Spencerport baseball during the Schum era was annually one of Section Five’s best teams. The 1942 championship team defeated Madison of the City league.
Schum temporarily left his coaching position to serve in the Navy during World War II in 1944 and 1945. After his return, his 1947 team won the Monroe County title with a 9-1 record but lost in the Sectionals to Penn Yan. A succession of excellent pitchers helped Chick produce his top rated teams including Bill Flagg, Homer Barton, Ted Fosmire, Nelson Reynolds, LeRoy Hershey, Pete Hinchey, Bill Hiscock, Jerry Webster and Paul Allen. Among the better position players and hitters were Rich and LaVerne Houck, Chuck McMillan, Ralph “Dutch” Webster, Ed DeCook, Bob Stenzel, Joe Ryan, Bob Kenyon, Kick Kerwin, Joe Fosmire and the three Przybyciens: John, Walt and Ed. Those in attendance June 28 included his son Tim, who was the presenter, and his other son, Dan. Other former players coached by Schum who attended were Pete Hinchey, Joe Ryan, Nick Radford and Fred Holbrook. Tim Redding, Churchville-Chili pitcher who had a significant major league career, was also inducted into the Section Five Hall of Fame.
Decades coaches
championships with the Hawks, 15 league titles and two state crowns while mentoring 117 All-League players and seeing 109 go on to play college soccer. “I have really tried to still show the student athlete the great benefits of soccer in their lives,” Orbaker said. “I really believe the role of sportsmanship, team bonding, competitive moments and the leadership training it provides are great tools for all students to learn and benefit from. “The greatest difference in society is the role that sports plays in the lives of students and parents - I believe there is a decline in the importance to them as a whole. The other issue is the cost. For a player to truly excel in the sport they usually have to pay to play in a premier club. This results in the player participating three or more times per week. As a result, the days of three-sport athletes is declining.” Grillo has coached at the high school level for 40 years total and returned to Holley in 1989 to coach wrestling and tennis after spending 1977-1989 at Pavilion. Before that he was at Holley for three years (1975-77). One of eight finalists for National Coach of the Year in wrestling in 2004-05, the Albion High School, Monroe Community College and SUNY Brockport grad has been named the Genesee Region Coach of the Year 15 times and Section V Coach of the Year six times in wrestling. The Hawks won eight consecutive wrestling titles from 2001-2008 and 11 in total. Grillo had 645 career dual meet wins through the 2013-14 season and was closing in on the state mark for all-time wins of 675 held by Joe Bena of Section II. “There have been changes in the sport of wrestling which makes it much harder to stay in coaching for a long time,” Grillo said. “There is a ton of paperwork and charting. Wrestling is losing the marginal athlete. It is becoming an elite sport where individuals are becoming tremendously skilled. The average wrestler finds himself battling against the highly skilled ones and then gets turned off to the sport because they are losing. Wrestling needs the marginal wrestlers to stay in order to fill all the weight classes. Many students cannot afford to travel in the off-season to go to skill camps, tournaments, clubs and other activities. “I have not, though, seen many changes in tennis - it had been the same since I started. I go from being a maniac in wrestling to being calm and cool in tennis. They are two different sports - wrestling is hype and tennis is concentration. “I have tried hard to adapt to those changes (broken homes, social media use, cell phones in school), but it has not been easy. My former student athletes tell me I am not as hard on my current athletes and that I have mellowed. Maybe so because that ‘in your face’ attitude only works for a few now. I still try my hardest to get every ounce of energy out of each athlete.” Lipani has been the head football coach at Hilton since 1989 and Greece Arcadia from 1986-88 after playing football and graduating from Brockport State. He earned his 150th career coaching win in 2012 and is now at 161 with three Section V titles - in 1988 with Arcadia and 1992 and 1994 with the Cadets. “I believe, unlike most coaches, kids are the same now as they were when I started. They want to work, compete and learn. “I have implemented more components of the spread offense little by little over the years. We still believe in power football, but have continued to add some wrinkles each year.” With a combined 102 years, there isn’t room to share all, but there are some favorite stories about their contribution and their respective sport’s ultimate impact on high school students.
by Warren Kozireski There are seven high schools within the coverage area for Suburban News and the Hamlin Clarkson Herald - Holley, Byron-Bergen, Kendall, Hilton, Churchville-Chili, Spencerport and Brockport. Over the past two-plus decades at all seven high schools combined, only four varsity coaches have remained in the same role throughout - Hilton football coach Rich Lipani, Spencerport boys soccer coach Tom Etsler, Holley wrestling and tennis coach John Grillo and Holley boys soccer coach Dan Orbaker. The number was six until the last few years as longtime Hilton wrestling coach Chuck Partridge retired after 22 years as head coach and part of the program from 1980-2011 and the only football coach Churchville-Chili ever had, Paul Dick, stepped down this past fall. Seven schools and dozens of teams and only four coaches left standing accounting for a combined 102 years in their current role. With the demands now placed on coaches by players and parents plus the evolving year-round nature of many sports today, how have these four maintained their drive and desire? “Every game, every season, every group of kids is a new beginning - a fresh start,” Etsler said. “You get to learn from past mistakes and get to try new ideas.” “I believe the PASSION for coaching and students after 30 years comes from the fear to fail and the thrill to win,” Orbaker said. “The environment at the Woodlands on game days is intoxicating. It makes me get excited and fired up! My student athletes latch on to these emotions and carry the tradition onto the field.” “Keeping the passion to coach student athletes is easy for me,” Grillo commented. “I love what I do and I love to see young adults grow and achieve. I put a lot of pressure on myself to continue to have a successful program. I love to build and see confidence in my athletes.” “We have great kids at Hilton,” Lipani said. “They are dedicated and enthusiastic about football. And I have had basically the same staff from modified through varsity for the last 26 years, which has a great effect also.” Etsler came from Churchville-Chili to take over the Spencerport varsity program in 1995 from Jeff Farnsworth and has 219 career wins over his 20 years. He will tie the school record for most seasons as boys soccer coach this coming fall - a record held by National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee Ron Broadbent and is just seven wins shy of tying Broadbent’s school record of 226 victories. “You have to realize that kids have other things in their lives and your sport isn’t always going to be the most important, number one thing in their lives all the time,” Etsler said. “Also as the game changes you must also adjust. You need to attend workshops, the annual convention and some coaches’ courses. Kids will figure out fast if you don’t know what you’re talking about. Personally I have become more compassionate in my coaching style - many kids have greater issues off the field than in the past. “You would like to think you have had a positive impact on all the kids that have played for you. I think any kid who plays sports learns a lot of things they use in their day-to-day lives - many of them don’t know it until they get much older. Orbaker will enter his 30th season as varsity boys soccer coach at Holley after his college playing days at SUNY Brockport where he was an All-SUNYAC selection on defense. He has accumulated nine sectional

“We have had many kids go into military service over the years and the common theme is they credit the football program for their dedication and discipline,” Lipani shared. Etsler wrote: “It would be hard to pick one memory. I have been fortunate to have a lot of talented teams and players. Winning Sectional Championships is always nice, but it would be hard to pick out a favorite one. Each team had great memories along the way. “One of the best things now is seeing kids that I coached being successful with their careers and lives. I have coached kids who are now doctors, lawyers, business owners, college coaches, engineers, teachers, plumbers, just about everything. Running into them and hearing what they are up to and reliving old times is great.” “One of my most rewarding moments was when I got a call a couple of years ago from a kid I had coached in the late 1980’s at Churchville-Chili. He said he was living in Colorado now and wanted to let me know the impact I had on his life. He was coaching and had three kids of his own. I hadn’t seen him in 20 years, but I remembered everything about him. I’ll always remember that call.” “When you have been coaching as long as I have you have seen it all,” Grillo added. “In my first year as a coach I had a young man who had nothing but trouble in his life. He took to my hardnosed style and became a two-time League Champion. Several years later his son came up to me and said he wanted to be on the 20-win plaque like his dad and he wanted me to help him get his life straightened out as well. He finished his senior year with 19 wins and one year later he was killed in an accident. Holley now has a yearly award given to a graduating senior in his name called “Most Heart-Most Determined.” “I had a wrestler fall out of a tree stand early in the season and severely cut his body and had to miss 80 percent of the season. He struggled to get back in the lineup through the pain, but was determined to get himself back to full strength. He went on to place fourth in the New York State Tournament that year. There are a lot of other stories and I’m in the process of writing a book that will be titled “From the Heart: A True Wrestling Story.” Having coached all three of my sons and seeing them excel as All-Americans, State place finishers and Academic All-Americans is and always will also be special for me.” Orbaker: “favorite moments include coaching my two sons in sectional winning seasons and having them play roles in the program’s success. Then watching them benefit from memories and playing at the next level in college at Roberts Wesleyan. Really fond memories of the State title games, now a long time ago. “We have had many, many, many great players in Holley. And, believe it or not, every time I go to the field and fire up to a high school season and having a game. The mental chess game in getting your team to click just right is really a strong motivation for me. I love to coach these kids.”

November 23, 1982 was the issue date of Suburban News. In that issue one could find advertisements from some businesses that are still a facet of their communities. They included Page Appliances, Barnard Chevrolet, Arndt Funeral Home, D’Angelo’s Plumbing & Heating, The Glue Factory, The Unique Shop, Salmon Creek Country Club, Brockport Carpet, Naughton’s Johnson House, Viking Valhalla Room and Sullivan’s Char Broil. Most businesses advertising in that edition of Suburban News no longer exist. All but two of those businesses named above are still operated by the same people or family as in 1982. Over 32 years is a long time to be in business. In that November 23, 1982 edition of Suburban News one could also find a story with a freelance writer’s first by-line. The story was headlined Churchville Students Lost In Books and it was written by Evelyn Dow. She wrote about Churchville Elementary School students Ernest Smith, Tom Hetherington, Kelley Moore, Angela Mull, Bradley Melvin, David Coates, Robert Vordran, Mandy Decker, Katie Tavner, Lesley Northrup, Gina Donato, Sandy Morris and Cheryl Jackling and their book reports generated in observance of National Children’s Book Week. The students were members of the classes taught by Doris Joy and Andrea Chochul. In the months to come, Evelyn would write about Ogden Town Historian Shirley Nixon, retiring Ogden Town Justice Roy Burley and Robert and Linda Bourns Reusch, who had purchased the Avon Inn the same month Evelyn began at Suburban News. In February of 1983 we learned that the Spencerport School District had 25 Apple II microcomputers being used in classrooms, thanks to a story written by the future editor. The following week Evelyn wrote that students in the Hilton School District had been using computers since the late 1970s. In what was described as the last in the series on computers being used in classrooms, Evelyn wrote about James Friedland, a science teacher at Churchville-Chili High School, and how he produced a high school physics program for computers. According to Harold Hefke, then Churchville-Chili’s assistant Superintendent for Instruction, computers had been a part of the Math Department since about 1977. Later that year Evelyn continued the series on computers with a discussion of the benefits of computers for Special Ed students. Louis Grammatico, BOCES Special Education teacher at Merton Williams Middle School in Hilton, talked about the improvement in attendance in his class in order to earn computer time. February of that year saw Evelyn writing about the importance of Valentine’s Day to then Hilton Mayor Larry Gursslin and his wife Carol and Hilton residents Mary and Ray Verney, who would be celebrating their 58th Anniversary that April. People’s TV: Anyone Can Be A Star the headline read for an article on public access TV. In two articles on successive weeks readers discovered what Group W was doing in Parma and Ogden for public access while Cable 12 W was providing 30 to 40 hours of local programming a week in Greece, Gates and Chili. Later in the year Group W Cable TV announced that they were opening a satellite office in Spencerport with staff coming from their Brockport office and Evelyn wrote about the struggle for the cable company to make it come together. School budgets in the 1980s were scary experiences for most districts. Evelyn wrote about the Spencerport School budget, for 1983-84 on which residents would vote, that carried a 7.23 percent increase. A home with an average assessment of $25,000 would see a $48.39 increase if it passed. Evelyn wrote about the four candidates for two board
Evelyn, The staff at the Westside News would like to say it has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to work with you at the paper. Your dedication and commitment to Westside News has been an inspiration to all of us. It is amazing how quicky the years have gone by, all of the changes that we have gone through, the friendships that we have made. We wish you all of the happiness in the world, and hope you know how much you will be missed by your Westside News family.
seats that year. They were Beverly Brust, Burton Judd, Charles “Sandy” McLellan and David Weaver. Along with the budget vote the Spencerport School Board was trying to decide the future for the Initial Teaching Alphabet (ITA) at Munn School. The board had voted to discontinue the program but at the next meeting the board was presented with a petition from parents who wanted the program to continue, while Linda Osowski spoke in favor of the program and how popular it had become with parents. Dr. Robert Sudlow, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, said that the program was the only reading program in the district where parents have an option. Dr. Sudlow saw that as being unfair to other parents who had no such choice in reading programs. Evelyn was always careful to provide a voice for both sides in an issue and the article on the ITA program was one such example of that. That desire for fairness was what guided her during the many election seasons. However, for some, the feeling is if you’re not with us you are against us. Then there was the article Evelyn wrote about a Spencerport school employee who, as a mother and grandmother, received her degree in elementary education from Brockport State University in the Spring of 1983. Thus was the story of Pat Dennis who was featured on Channel 13 news for her accomplishment. She credited her husband, Robert, and their four children aged 16 to 24 for their support of her efforts. Pat Dennis would be the teacher that Aaron Patella Ryan would have for third grade at Terry Taylor School. The story about his experiences as an employee of the New York Yankees graced a recent front page of this publication. When the Hilton United Methodist Church had begun construction, Evelyn was at the scene to bring us the story. Readers learned that the original 1884 church was destroyed by arson on August 10, 1981. Bernice Blossom was the chairperson of the building committee. In her first sports article Evelyn wrote about the upcoming opening day for Spencerport Junior Baseball in which Commissioner Tom O’Malley was to lead the Opening Ceremonies. Longtime SJB secretary, Steve Schockow, explained how sponsors were benefitted with their $75 donation. According to O’Malley, the previous year’s budget had totaled $25,000. Evelyn also provided relevant articles for special sections produced by the Suburban News. She wrote that interior decorators stressed country-look designs in an article for our home furnishings guide in the Spring of 1983. For an article headlined A Bit ‘O The Irish at McGinnity’s, which Evelyn did for a St. Patrick’s Day Special Section, a future freelance contributor was pictured by the name of Margaret McGinnity, who now is known as Maggie Fitzgibbon. Evelyn’s freelance career continued in this fashion until she was named editor beginning with the September 11, 1984 edition of Suburban News. Her list of contributing writers at that time included Barbara Carder, Herb MacNaughton and Nathan Pyles. As the longest-serving editor in the more than 60-year history of Suburban News/Westside News, Evelyn Dow was responsible for the growth in the credibility of the material found in the pages of our publications. She has left some large shoes to fill. We hope that we will be able to continue to provide our readers as they have experienced in the nearly 31 years that the task was being handled by Evelyn. We all wish Evelyn nothing but happiness in her years ahead. Keith Ryan Publisher

Circular Sock Knitting Machine Society seeking socks and other knitted items for veterans by Kristina Gabalski
Circular sock knitting machines came into prominence one hundred years ago and were used in the home to make socks for overseas troops during World War I. Members of a group knitting socks and other ‘keep warm’ items use similar machines, according to Carol Gursslin, president of a group of volunteers creating items for veterans in need. K. Gabalski photo.
Carol Gursslin of Hilton has a goal this summer: To amass one hundred pairs of new hand or machine knitted socks - plus hats and scarves - to donate to the Mountain States Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America (MSCPVA). “It’s cold where they live, they need them, Carol says of the vets who live in the states of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. Carol is the current president of the Circular Sock Knitting Machine Society (CSKMS) which will hold its annual conference - “Socks in the Rockies - August 1, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. The knitted socks for veterans are part of the “Head Over Heels for Vets charitable project which CSKMS began in 2013. Many CSKMS members use antique circular sock knitting machines which Carol explains came into prominence one hundred years ago and were used in the home, “.... to make socks for overseas troops during World War I, she explains. Soldiers fighting in the war were suffering from trench foot and desperately needed new, dry socks. “The socks were sent by the Red Cross overseas, Carol says. Making and donating socks (as well as hats and scarves) to veterans seemed a perfect project for the circular sock knitting group, Carol observes, and is a way for members to honor those who have served in the armed forces. Last year, the annual conference was held in nearby Geneseo and 95 hats, scarves and socks were made and donated to veterans at Canandaigua Veterans’ Hospital. On a recent rainy Saturday morning, Carol met a group of local knitters at Amelia’s Fabric and Yarn Shoppe in Hilton to talk about the project and to make items to be donated. She is appreciative of the support provided by Nancy Vorndran, owner of Amelia’s. “I can’t say enough about her and her generosity, Carol says. Carol explains that when she travels to Denver, Al Jones, a retired Army reservist there, will accept the sock/hat/scarf donations on behalf of the MSCPVA during

Makowski - Geil
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Geil were married Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Gospel Light Baptist Church, Spencerport. Reception was at Red Fedele’s Brook House. Donna and Bob had a beautiful day and shared it with many friends and family. The happy couple will make their home in Hilton.

She says that Jones was an instructor with Iraqi police forces when his unit was hit with an IED that killed some and left Al with near fatal spinal injuries. The MSCPVA, “strives to make the lives of veterans affected by spinal cord injury and dysfunction as close as possible to the lives of those not impacted by these lifechanging events. Our programs support members through advocacy, public education and recreational events, the group’s mission statement says. Jones will then distribute the donations to veterans in need. Donated items are wrapped in three-inch wide bands and marked with size, gender and washing instructions. Carol says acrylic yarn is recommended for the socks for ease of care.
