Byron-Bergen’s D’Errico moves on to next volleyball chapter by Warren Kozireski The only player in NCAA Division I history to win four national titles while at Penn State - and that was after she helped the Bees to three consecutive New York State titles - Alyssa D’Errico is already adding to the trophy case in her first year as Assistant Coach at the University of Louisville. The Cardinals, ranked 15th in the nation, were champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and are hosting first and second round NCAA playoff games in their 25th NCAA postseason appearance. “My first year of coaching has been incredible; I couldn’t have asked for a better athletic department, volleyball program or student-athletes to work with on a daily basis,” Alyssa D’Errico said via email while helping prepare the team for first round opponent Belmont. “The toughest part is not actually being able to physically do anything during matches. Previously, as a player when I saw something I would just make an adjustment and physically be able to make an impact immediately. Coaching is purely how well you can disseminate information to y o u r p l a y e r s Assistant Coach at The and have them University of Louisville, make an imme- Alyssa D’Errico. U. The impact that
all of my coaches had on my life off the court is unbelievable, from club and high school all the way to the collegiate level. “I wouldn’t be the person I am, much less the player I was, without the coaches I had mentoring me through life and volleyball. So I’d hope I can become half of that for some of my players throughout my career. I can still pick up the phone and call any of my coaches and they’d be there for me in all capacities. In ten to twenty years, I can only hope that is how some players will feel in regards to calling me.” D’Errico played professionally in Spain during the 2011 and 2012 campaigns for the Feel Volley Alcobendas Club and was Most Valuable Player of the Princess Cup. She also played in Croatia and in France before joining the Cardinals staff last January. In addition to the four titles and being part of 109 consecutive match winning streak while at Penn State, she is still listed eighth in school history with 1,245 digs and seventh with 146 aces. She was named the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2011. The women’s volleyball program at Louisville has now had 27 straight winning seasons and is one of only 14 schools to make the postseason 25 or more times. The ACC titlists finished this season 24-6 overall and 18-2 in conference. It might be a bit early to speculate about her future after just one year coaching at the college level, so D’Errico is taking things one step at a time. “For now my future goals are simple; be the best assistant coach out there. I would love to be one of the best recruiting coordinators and one of the best passing/defensive coaches in the country. “My goals long term are a bit harder to pinpoint, but then again I have always been a live in the moment type person. At this point I don’t think that I want to become a head coach but everyone has told me that will change. One thing’s for sure, I can’t see myself leaving this incredible game behind ... that is until I retire at 70.”

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald - December 6, 2015 3
Opinion Concerned resident questions HCSD Capital Maintenance Project Proposal Having been a resident of Parma for over 60 years and a staunch supporter of education as well as the HCSD, I find myself questioning the project which is being presented to the voters on December 8. Regarding the Northwood schools septic system, I attended a meeting last spring where it was announced that the district would present a small bond proposal in December for money to fund this project. I inquired as to the reserve fund the voters approved a year or so ago and was told, as I understood it, that the fund would be used but the funding, if approved, would replenish the reserve. The figure, as I recall, was lower than the $458,000 now being sought. That being said, I believe no one would have issues with the septic as it obviously needs to be taken care of. However, I was amazed when I read the “Hilton Insight” indicating the district is in fact asking the voters approval of another $2,192,000. Also, I do not recall any explanatory meetings for the community being held as the only place I have heard about the proposal is through the school newspaper. First of all, take a look at the $785,000 desired for the High School. Did you see the picture of the entrance that is proposed? This is not the Ralph Wilson Stadium, it is Hilton High School. Incidentally, I personally have never understood the need for the fountains installed in some buildings under another capital project and today some are not even operating. In an explanatory statement the “Insight” said, and I quote, “Additionally our beautiful new turf at LeBeau field will allow us the opportunity for increased usage.” I suspect few know that “increased usage” translates to more than triple the amount of events than in previous years. There were teams/band on a field where the question of the safety of the turf has been raised, four out of seven nights during this past fall season. I would like to know who is maintaining the fields? Who is paying for the increased lighting? Who is paying for the increased staff? It is common sense that the expenses on the High School fields must have doubled/tripled inasmuch as the usage has.
In the brand new sound system there is a flaw, which has resulted in unbelievable loud noise in the neighborhood surrounding the field. While the school district has been aware of the issue for three sports seasons, little to nothing has been done to solve the problem. Neighbors who have lived in their home for over twenty years and never had an problem until the new system was installed, now cannot even began to enjoy their property four out of seven nights – many of them weekend evenings. Since money seemed to be an issue, I would suggest perhaps some money might be spent to resolve the sound system noise level and maintain what we already have. In addition, I cannot help but wonder why it is that we must revamp the parking lot when we just finished a capital project which installed the parking lot we have. As for the front parking lot at Merton Williams, which I noted was an alternate, I passed by there just after it had been resealed and thought the front parking looked great. It is my opinion that this proposal resembles a wonderful Christmas wish list. However, as a senior citizen on a fixed income with no increase of any sort coming my way and medical insurance increasing by $85.00 a quarter, I cannot afford anything that will even remotely result someway/someday in a tax increase. I recall in the past hearing other seniors voice their opinions – sometimes I did not understand, but just like everything in life, my time is here. I now understand and realize how unfair it is that lifetime residents may be forced to sell their homes because they cannot afford the taxes. Perhaps it is true with this proposal there will not be an impact on our current (current is the key word) tax levy, however a day or so after the “Insight” came out Channel 10 news reported that it is estimated that most suburban school districts will be increasing taxes just as soon as the tax cap is gone. So tell me folks, in this economic environment is this proposal, other than Northwood septic, really necessary and affordable?

Proposed Clarkson projects impact town’s gateway area by Kristina Gabalski Residents have their say about incentive zoning for additional development at the Route 260 and Route 104 intersection in Clarkson -Traffic, traffic and traffic were the major concerns expressed by Clarkson residents and leaders during a pubic hearing held Tuesday, November 24 regarding incentive zoning for an Express Mart project proposed for the southeast corner of Sweden Walker Road (Route 260) and Ridge Road (Route 104). Residents who spoke said they understand development is coming to the busy intersection which serves as a gateway to the town, but traffic along Sweden Walker Road already is very heavy, particularly during commute hours, and they worry the gas station/convenience store will only make things worse. Julie Lapinski, who lives on Sweden Walker Road, said it has become the route to take for motorists who need to cross the Erie Canal between Route 31 and Route 104. She said traffic is constant in both directions outside her home. “It’s not a safe situation,” Lapinski said. “How much more (traffic) can it take? It’s non-stop. I don’t know what your vision is for the town. I don’t see it getting better.” Clarkson Supervisor Paul Kimball said the town board is very concerned over traffic in the area and is working to get the state to recognize there is a problem. “Both are state highways,” Kimball explained. “We disagree with (the state’s) conclusion. Something needs to be done now. We are having discussions with the DOT.” The New York State DOT has determined that the Brook Field at Clarkson housing development proposed for the southwest corner of the same intersection will not have a major impact on traffic flow. Supervisor Kimball suggested turning lanes or even a round-about as possible solutions to ease traffic congestion. He said the town plans to work with state representatives in an effort to, “get the state to do something.”
He encouraged residents to write letters to the DOT to express concerns. Michael Montalto, project engineer for Costich Engineering - which is working on both the Express Mart and Brook Field projects for separate developers - noted that both projects together might “warrant” improvements from the state. “It might offer more leverage with the DOT ... the cumulative effect,” he said. In addition to the Express Mart convenience store (approx. 7,192 square foot including space for two restaurant brands) the proposal includes a separate 1,040 square foot unattended car wash and a motor vehicle fuel sales facility (approx. 3,936 square foot) to be under a canopy. The Brook Field at Clarkson proposal includes eight two-unit senior duplex buildings and an 87 unit senior apartment building; 12 two-unit villas and 6 sixteen-unit apartment buildings with a community center and pool; and 5 mixed-use buildings each with eight apartments and 6,000 square foot of commercial space along Ridge Road. The project would be built in three phases, Supervisor Kimball said. Developers of the Brook Field project are also seeking incentive zoning from the town. Town leaders and developers say both projects fit with the “hamlet” concept of pedestrian friendly development called for in Clarkson’s Comprehensive Plan. Town leaders defined for residents what a “hamlet” is. “It will look like a village,” Supervisor Kimball said, “with sidewalks on both sides of the road to create a sense of community when driving in.” Also on November 24, Clarkson Town Board members unanimously approved a negative declaration regarding the environmental impact of the Brook Field at Clarkson development. “Traffic is our primary concern,” Supervisor Kimball said. Town Board members are expected to review the environmental impact of th Express Mart project at their next meeting December 8, as well as work on details of the incentive zoning proposal for Brook Field.

Gifts of a lifetime Part one of two by Doug Hickerson In the season of gift-giving, several of our local citizens were asked what very meaningful or life-changing gift they have received over the years. Thinking of “gift” broadly, it was suggested the gift might be material, but more likely other categories like wisdom, advice, intervention, spiritual encouragement, etc. It might be realized as a gift only in retrospect. I reached some of the interesting people I wrote about in the past in this newspaper. Below are the responses from some of them. Alicia Fink The most significant gift I received has been my rich ethnic heritage, and the appreciation of the same. I lived in Ecuador from birth to High School graduation. Ecuador is a third world country, poor but beautiful; made beautiful by the color of its flora, by the sound of the Spanish and Quichua languages, by the variety of ethnic clothing, by the variety of ethnic music, and the delicious native foods. My Spanish and native heritage were present in everyday life. I have lived in the United States my adult life. The distance has served to strengthen my understanding of where I come from. It has been important to me and I have been successful in making my sons become aware of, appreciate and value their roots. Barb Deming When I was four years old, my widowed mom remarried. One day with typical little girl fury, I stomped over to my favorite neighbor to complain about dad. Sid’s willingness to listen to my reactions to all manner of things made him super special. After hearing my complaints, he said, “Well, I think he is trying very hard to be the best dad he can be. And, I think he would really like your
help.” I ran home filled with positive intentions. Throughout the years I often replay Sid’s words. His advice has made an enormous difference in my attitude towards others. The funny thing is, having a tendency to be hard on myself, it took me decades before realizing that council also applied to me. Buck Noble Pie is the greatest gift of all! Each week my wife Kristen bakes a sugar free fruit pie just for me. I grow the organic berries and apples; she creates the golden brown treasures. Along with a bit of yogurt and a few nuts, it is my main meal every day -- it feeds both body and spirit. We work hard at our jobs, love up our family, and maintain the 1870s farmstead we call home. The weekly pie symbolizes the commitment we have to each other, the simple life style we choose to lead, and the fruits of our labors. Pie is love... the greatest gift of all! Lori Skoog One of the things that had the most impact on my life happened when I was 5 and 6 years old. Because my brother was frequently being taken to the Cleveland Clinic for treatment, I had to spend those two years with my Nana. She was from Albania, where my mother was born, and passed through Ellis Island with her 3 children in 1929. My grandfather had gone ahead to find work in Jamestown, NY. I might as well have been living in the “old country” as we spoke Albanian, ate traditional food and practiced customs from that culture. At that early age, I learned to be very independent and picked up on my Nana’s sense of humility. She created a very strong foundation for me. (In the December 13 issue, Part 2, several more responses will be given: Chet Fery, Peggy Hale, Sarah
Hart, and Dr. Jim Goetz.)

St. Luke’s Episcopal blesses it forward Health is just one of the many ways our Parish seeks to serve our neighbors,” said Kruchten-Merring. “This year, we also are supporting The Coffee Connection in Rochester, which helps women by raising money through sales of free-trade coffee and offering employment opportunities, and we continue to give back through our other ministries as well.” St. Luke’s houses the Brockport Ecumenical Clothing Center, the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf, serves new moms in need through the church’s North Porch program, which provides infant layettes, and opens its “kitchen” door the second Sunday of each month, serving up a free meal to anyone who would like to attend for food, fellowship and fun through the church’s Harvest Kitchen. St. Luke’s also hosts local Girl and Boy Scout Troops, and other non-for-profit groups. For more information about St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and its programs, contact St. Luke’s at 637-6650, or via e-mail at stlukes@frontiernet.net. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Brockport, shares its blessings by donating copies of the book, What To Do When Your Child Gets Sick for use by Oak Orchard Health clients. The books - 20 in English and 20 in Spanish - were purchased to serve the diverse client population at the health center. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Vestry voted to donate the $250 cost for the books, which were acquired by Oak Orchard Health at a discounted rate, making this valuable resource available for parents of young children, assisting them in making informed decisions on the health and wellbeing of their family. Oak Orchard Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nancy Ciavarri and Director of Business and Fund Development Rhyn McDevitt recently received the books from The Reverend Krista Cameron, rector of St. Luke’s, and Linda Kruchten-Merring, a member of St. Luke’s Vestry. “St. Luke’s has a long history of serving the people of the Village of Brockport and surrounding area. Byron-Bergen High School seniors get a crash course in adulthood It’s that time of year: college applications, acceptance letters, and meetings with military recruiters. Seniors at Byron-Bergen Sr. High School are a little better prepared for what is to come after graduation, thanks to local counselors, businesses, managers, and members of the military who visited for the school’s annual Senior Experience Day. Approximately 80 seniors took part in the late-November morning full of informational sessions designed to prepare students for their post-secondary life. The sessions covered a variety of topics ranging from transitioning to college, to credit cards and credit ratings, to understanding the military, and even overcoming ‘senioritis.’
Members of the Genesee County Economic Development Center presented information to the students about the Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park (STAMP) project and about all of the job opportunities that are expected to come to the area. Interim Principal Patrick McGee said these real-world experiences are important for students to learn. “Senior Experience Day is a great way for students to learn about college and career opportunities,” he said. “It is very important that we provide as many experiences as possible to our students that promote college and career readiness.” Provided information

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Never Known to Fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh star of the sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my Heart to succor me in my necessity (Make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it, and it will be granted to you. Gratefully, S.W.

Award winning artist Lauretta Kirk has brought her Mostly Watercolor paintings to the Parma Public Library where they will remain on display through December 2015. Several of her pieces include “Plain air” artwork which is accomplished by working on location and taking on the challenge to produce a finished painting before the light changes. Lauretta’s introduction to the art world goes back to her childhood when her father worked as a professional portrait photographer. She also owned and operated the Village Gallery in Hilton for fifteen years and

Joe’s Stories, old, new and mostly true An American experience by Joe Reinschmidt Recently my wife, Heide, and I were privileged to participate in a seven day trip to Nashville, Tennessee with the Hamlin Senior Citizens group. Under the capable leadership of Linda and Don Rabjohn, assisted by Eileen Preston, we enjoyed quite a variety of sights and sounds in “Music City USA. Departing Hamlin at 8 a.m. on September 27, I recall the sound of a few voices including mine, attempting to sing the well known country song, “On the Road Again. The guy really on the road was our capable driver, Don Saltsman, who we would learn had left home in Florida on August 20 and wouldn’t get back there until mid-October. He said it was his practice to volunteer for a few weeks driving up north each summer, but this year it got extended due to another driver having to back out for health reasons. In response to my question if there was better pay as opposed to shorter trips, he said no, but on these trips they are paid a salary every day, regardless of how much or how little they drive. After three or four short stops on the way, we arrived at our first overnight in a motel just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. Following breakfast in the morning we were on our way south again, crossing the Ohio River into Kentucky and then on to Tennessee where we stopped for several hours at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum. Among many items there was a Wall of Fame for people who were involved in research and development of Farming. One of them was a gentleman who created the first variety of field corn that would produce more than a single ear on each stalk. Then it was on to a hotel, a few miles north of Nashville which would be our home for the next four nights. A few hours later we were taken to a restaurant for dinner. The next day, our first event was a tour of the current Grand Ole Opry House, which seats 4,400 people, about double the size of the original Opry at the Ryman Theatre. Lunch was on our own at the Opry Mills, the largest outlet, dining and entertainment destination in Tennessee. From there we left with a step-on guide for a tour of
Nashville and some of its environs, returning for dinner and departing at 6 p.m. for the Grand Old Opry Show. The following day we started with a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame which as expected had all sorts of items played, used, driven or worn by the CMA stars. Of special interest was information that showed the evolvement of Country Music from its origins in Blue Grass music created by settlers, based on the folk music of the countries they had come from which were mostly northern European. A recent addition was a section devoted to Sam Phillips (Sun) recording studios which produced many stars. Sam had a knack for recognizing basic talent in young performers and helped them develop it. That evening we enjoyed a delicious buffet and stage show at the Nashville Dinner Theater. The performers there were for the most part unknown to us but the consensus was that they were as good, or better than some at the Opry Show. A visit/tour of the Belle Meade Plantation Antebellum home was our first item the next morning. This plantation was instrumental in breeding and development of race horses but fell on hard times after many years, in part because Tennessee had prohibited betting on horse racing. Kentucky did not and horse breeding and development industry moved there. From there we went to historic downtown Nashville where we could explore on our own the many venues in an area known as “The District. The success of this area is due at least in part to the city creating a 501c-3 tax exempt entity of the entire District that helps property owners maintain, improve and/or redevelop their sites. After a brief stop at the Willie Nelson & Friends General Store and Museum we were off to the Inn at Opryland for another great buffet dinner and show. Regardless of your background or interest in country music, the things we experienced told a lot about how our country evolved and became what it is today. Music played a big roll but the faith, fortitude, ingenuity and work ethic of its people were the drivers. It was truly a great American Experience.

Healthy kids run in Byron-Bergen Elementary School’s first Turkey Trot Byron-Bergen Elementary students are serious about having fun and staying healthy. They proved it on November 16 as the school hosted its first Turkey Trot run/walk event. More than 90 students in grades Pre-K through six, along with many family members and school faculty got moving for the non-competitive run, choosing one-, two- or three-mile courses. The Turkey Trot is part of the school’s strategy to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, and to help young children develop life-long healthy habits. The school’s Health and Wellness Committee (Physical Education teachers Danielle Carson and Brian Tatar, Assistant Principal Amanda Cook, and Principal Brian Meister) organized the event and donated
healthy snacks and drinks. Many students also enjoyed playing GoNoodle activities before and after the run. GoNoodle, an interactive computer program designed to make moving fun, is used extensively at the school to integrate physical activity into the classroom environment. Principal Brian Meister said, “All of our young runners received special Turkey Trot certificates in honor of their great showings on the track. The run was a terrific success, largely due to the wonderful support we received from our many parent and faculty volunteers. We hope to make the Turkey Trot an annual event here at Byron-Bergen Elementary and are already planning for next year. Provided information

Hamlin Recreation gets festive with first ever Holiday Celebration event For the first time ever, the Hamlin Recreation department will host a Holiday Celebration event on Saturday, December 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Hamlin Town Hall Gymnasium at 1658 Lake Road. Local vendors as well as the Hamlin Royals Youth Group will sell festive holiday ornaments and gift items for last minute shoppers. A Chili Cook-off will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., comprised of local licensed kitchens, caterers and restaurateurs. For $4 per person, the public can taste all entries, and vote, for the best local chili. The winner will be decided at 2 p.m. and receive a special trophy award. All proceeds will help support the Hamlin Royals Youth Group. The younger children can play in a craft area including a backdrop and props for fun holiday photos. For more polished and professional holiday photos, a professional photographer will also be among the vendors. Milk and cookies will also be served. Provided information
