Byron-Bergen’s D’Errico moves on to next volleyball chapter by Warren Kozireski The only player in NCAA Division I history to win four national titles while at Penn State - and that was after she helped the Bees to three consecutive New York State titles - Alyssa D’Errico is already adding to the trophy case in her first year as Assistant Coach at the University of Louisville. The Cardinals, ranked 15th in the nation, were champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and are hosting first and second round NCAA playoff games in their 25th NCAA postseason appearance. “My first year of coaching has been incredible; I couldn’t have asked for a better athletic department, volleyball program or student-athletes to work with on a daily basis,” Alyssa D’Errico said via email while helping prepare the team for first round opponent Belmont. “The toughest part is not actually being able to physically do anything during matches. Previously, as a player when I saw something I would just make an adjustment and physically be able to make an impact immediately. Coaching is purely how well you can disseminate information to y o u r p l a y e r s Assistant Coach at The and have them University of Louisville, make an imme- Alyssa D’Errico. U. Loudiate impact on isville photo. the match. “The easiest part for me has been the building relationships part. It is absolutely the main reason that I knew I wanted to coach from a young age. The impact that

all of my coaches had on my life off the court is unbelievable, from club and high school all the way to the collegiate level. “I wouldn’t be the person I am, much less the player I was, without the coaches I had mentoring me through life and volleyball. So I’d hope I can become half of that for some of my players throughout my career. I can still pick up the phone and call any of my coaches and they’d be there for me in all capacities. In ten to twenty years, I can only hope that is how some players will feel in regards to calling me.” D’Errico played professionally in Spain during the 2011 and 2012 campaigns for the Feel Volley Alcobendas Club and was Most Valuable Player of the Princess Cup. She also played in Croatia and in France before joining the Cardinals staff last January. In addition to the four titles and being part of 109 consecutive match winning streak while at Penn State, she is still listed eighth in school history with 1,245 digs and seventh with 146 aces. She was named the NCAA Woman of the Year in 2011. The women’s volleyball program at Louisville has now had 27 straight winning seasons and is one of only 14 schools to make the postseason 25 or more times. The ACC titlists finished this season 24-6 overall and 18-2 in conference. It might be a bit early to speculate about her future after just one year coaching at the college level, so D’Errico is taking things one step at a time. “For now my future goals are simple; be the best assistant coach out there. I would love to be one of the best recruiting coordinators and one of the best passing/defensive coaches in the country. “My goals long term are a bit harder to pinpoint, but then again I have always been a live in the moment type person. At this point I don’t think that I want to become a head coach but everyone has told me that will change. One thing’s for sure, I can’t see myself leaving this incredible game behind ... that is until I retire at 70.”

Now Accepting New Patients ~ 352-4324 • Experienced and Innovative Dentists

Concerned resident questions HCSD Capital Maintenance Project Proposal Having been a resident of Parma for over 60 years and a staunch supporter of education as well as the HCSD, I find myself questioning the project which is being presented to the voters on December 8. Regarding the Northwood schools septic system, I attended a meeting last spring where it was announced that the district would present a small bond proposal in December for money to fund this project. I inquired as to the reserve fund the voters approved a year or so ago and was told, as I understood it, that the fund would be used but the funding, if approved, would replenish the reserve. The figure, as I recall, was lower than the $458,000 now being sought. That being said, I believe no one would have issues with the septic as it obviously needs to be taken care of. However, I was amazed when I read the “Hilton Insight” indicating the district is in fact asking the voters approval of another $2,192,000. Also, I do not recall any explanatory meetings for the community being held as the only place I have heard about the proposal is through the school newspaper. First of all, take a look at the $785,000 desired for the High School. Did you see the picture of the entrance that is proposed? This is not the Ralph Wilson Stadium, it is Hilton High School. Incidentally, I personally have never understood the need for the fountains installed in some buildings under another capital project and today some are not even operating. In an explanatory statement the “Insight” said, and I quote, “Additionally our beautiful new turf at LeBeau field will allow us the opportunity for increased usage.” I suspect few know that “increased usage” translates to more than triple the amount of events than in previous years. There were teams/band on a field where the question of the safety of the turf has been raised, four out of seven nights during this past fall season. I would like to know who is maintaining the fields? Who is paying for the increased lighting? Who is paying for the increased staff? It is common sense that the expenses on the High School fields must have doubled/tripled inasmuch as the usage has.

In the brand new sound system there is a flaw, which has resulted in unbelievable loud noise in the neighborhood surrounding the field. While the school district has been aware of the issue for three sports seasons, little to nothing has been done to solve the problem. Neighbors who have lived in their home for over twenty years and never had an problem until the new system was installed, now cannot even began to enjoy their property four out of seven nights – many of them weekend evenings. Since money seemed to be an issue, I would suggest perhaps some money might be spent to resolve the sound system noise level and maintain what we already have. In addition, I cannot help but wonder why it is that we must revamp the parking lot when we just finished a capital project which installed the parking lot we have. As for the front parking lot at Merton Williams, which I noted was an alternate, I passed by there just after it had been resealed and thought the front parking looked great. It is my opinion that this proposal resembles a wonderful Christmas wish list. However, as a senior citizen on a fixed income with no increase of any sort coming my way and medical insurance increasing by $85.00 a quarter, I cannot afford anything that will even remotely result someway/someday in a tax increase. I recall in the past hearing other seniors voice their opinions – sometimes I did not understand, but just like everything in life, my time is here. I now understand and realize how unfair it is that lifetime residents may be forced to sell their homes because they cannot afford the taxes. Perhaps it is true with this proposal there will not be an impact on our current (current is the key word) tax levy, however a day or so after the “Insight” came out Channel 10 news reported that it is estimated that most suburban school districts will be increasing taxes just as soon as the tax cap is gone. So tell me folks, in this economic environment is this proposal, other than Northwood septic, really necessary and affordable?

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Churchville-Chili HS inducts new National Honor Society members The 2015 National Honor Society (NHS) Induction Ceremony for Churchville-Chili High School was held on November 17 in the C-C Performing Arts Center. The newest members of the NHS - 75 strong - received a welcome from Principal William Geraci and advisor Paul Glor, along with congratulations from CCCSD Superintendent Lori Orologio. The inductees were selected based on their high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character: the qualities all members must represent. The roster of speakers included NHS Officers Jacob Perkins, Ben Martin, Katie Wooton and Melissa Prewasincak who each presented thoughts on the importance of one of the qualities necessary for membership. Featured speaker, Churchville-Chili NHS Teacher of the Year Jonathan Woodard, shared his views on the important role empathy plays in our lives. 2015 National Honor Society Inductees included: Brianna Abbey, Josh Anthony, Allison Ariola, Jenna Baer, Ilia Bagley, Camille Becker, Katelyn Bean, Emma Bennett, Jaclyn Breeze, Samantha Bruno,

Wesley Burke, Nicole Cammilleri, Chelsea Castro, Elizabeth Chatelle, Emma Clar, Cameron Collins, Nicolas Colucci, Jamie Cooper, Guiliana Cozzo, Megan Crawford, Rachel Czolgosz, Rebecca Czolgosz, Dana Damiani, Steven Daniszewski, Thomas DeMarsico, Kevin Dick, Margaret Dunning, Delaney Finewood, Brooke Fisher, Laura Freeman, Kristen Gawron, Paulina Goodermote, Christian Goossen, Emma Grant, Abigail Gutowski, Alexis Hartwig, Sydney Hayden, Erika Hermanson, Grace Hoeflein, Jamilyn Keele, Jennifer King, Anna Kostarellis, Stephanie Kotsch, Scott Lewis, Leah Lines, Kayla Luther, Olivia Lydon, Connor McGrath, Riley McPherson, Ryan Mead, Jordan Melita, Sarah Miller, Quyen Nguyen, Kyle O’Connor, Emily Odell, Joe Paris, James Philippy, Grace Porrazzo, Hope Porrazzo, Maggie Quarteri, Ashlyn Raines, Jodie Reese, Molly Reyngoudt, Brianna Rowland, Ashley Schepler, Zoe Spoor, Remiah Sundine, Natalie Tegler, Deanna Tinch, Olivia Wehle, Alexis Wetzel, Angelina Wezelis, Kate Wilson, Zachary Woodruff and Jenny Yau. Oliver Middle School student Sacred Howland is the winner of the 2015 Lions Club Peace Poster Contest. Sacred received a gift card for First Place in the local contest sponsored by the Brockport Lions Club in addition to winning at the District level where she received a $100 award. She now moves on to have a chance to win on the State level. Pictured with Sacred (center) are her parents (left), District Governor Tim Crawford (right) who presented her District Award, and Brockport Lions Club President Dave Moore. Provided photo.

As Mary Chamberlin sings, residents of Westwood Commons in North Chili smile while others join in the singing. “I don’t know who has more fun,” she says, “the audience or us.” Mary and long-time friend and musical partner Bill Mickelson entertained residents at the senior living community the day before Thanksgiving. After more than 30 years, the two continue to perform frequently at Westwood Commons as well as other locations around the area including Unity Adult Day Services at Cornerstone, the Ogden Senior Center, Seabury Woods and Lakeside Beikirch Care Center. Westwood Commons residents look forward to the performances, activity director Cathy Toney says. “They love the music, they can relate to it, it tells a story with each song. They love to listen to Mary,” she says. Toney describes Mary’s clear, expressive voice as classy. “It reminds me of 1950’s singers,” she says. Bill Mickelson of Spencerport accompanies Mary on his ukelele - a unique model called a “Fluke” made in Massachusetts by the Magic Fluke Company. He also performs some solo pieces and instrumentals. Bill does all the arranging of the songs and Mary says after decades of performing together the two rarely need to rehearse. “Sometimes we do when we add a new song,” she explains.

Selections performed on November 25 included familiar, long-time favorites such as, “Won’t You Come Home Bill Bailey,” “Back in the Saddle Again,” “Turkey in the Straw,” “Autumn Leaves,” and “Don’t Fence Me In.” Bill shared personal stories with the residents and explained changes he has had to make in his playing due to arthritis. “I use a thumb pick instead of a flat pick,” he told the residents, and has worked out arrangements enabling him to, “give my left hand a break.” The small ukelele also helps, he added. Despite the arthritis, Bill’s fingers still glide over the fret board creating delightful sounds and memorable musical moments. “No one expects to hear anything serious played on a ukelele,” Bill said, and to counter that belief, played some light classical music and a Viennese waltz. Bill explained he will be visiting a hand specialist soon and will likely have surgery on his thumb, meaning there will be no Christmas concert this year. “So I’ll play a Christmas song now,” he said. He performed a selection featuring the story of a grandma called “Corn Cobblers” from 1935. Fittingly, Bill and Mary concluded their performance with “Happy Trails.” No doubt residents of Westwood Commons hope that after more than three decades of bringing musical joy to the area, Bill and Mary will be able to continue - as the song says - “until we meet again.”

Gates-Chili Rotary serves the community above all else Rotary Clubs throughout the nation and the world have as their motto, “Service Above Self.” Members of the Gates-Chili Rotary Club truly exemplify this motto. This fall, some of the activities in which they have been involved include: an annual distribution of dictionaries (over 500 to third grade students in ten schools in the Gates, Chili and Churchville area); 263 pounds of food collected for St. Theodore’s Food Cupboard; and, in cooperation with the Churchville High School Interact Club (Rotary sponsored), eight boxes of toiletries and four boxes of food snacks collected and sent to service personnel in Afghanistan. The Rotary Club also held a Pasta Dinner

at the Italian-American Club as a fundraiser to raise monies in support of many local community needs. In addition, members of the club arranged a reception committee that attended each of the Veterans’ Honor Flights arrivals at the Monroe County Airport. Membership in Rotary provides individuals the opportunity for a higher level of community service than as an individual. Membership is not restricted; it’s open to those who desire to serve. If anyone is interested in becoming a member of a Rotary Club, visit their website, follow them on Facebook or email secretary Ernestine Kamp at kampfe@ rochester.rr.com for more information. Barb Deming When I was four years old, my widowed mom remarried. One day with typical little girl fury, I stomped over to my favorite neighbor to complain about dad.  Sid’s willingness to listen to my reactions to all manner of things made him super special.  After hearing my complaints, he said, “Well, I think he is trying very hard to be the best dad he can be. And, I think he would really like your help.â€?  I ran home filled with

Alicia Fink The most significant gift I received has been my rich ethnic heritage, and the appreciation of the same. I lived in Ecuador from birth to High School graduation. Ecuador is a third world country, poor but beautiful; made beautiful by the color of its flora, by the sound of the Spanish and Quichua languages, by the variety of ethnic clothing, by the variety of ethnic music, and the delicious native foods. My Spanish and native heritage were present in everyday life. I have lived in the United States my adult life. The distance has served to strengthen my understanding of where I come from. It has been important to me and I have been successful in making my sons become aware of, appreciate and value their roots.

In the season of gift-giving, several of our local citizens were asked what very meaningful or lifechanging gift they have received over the years. Thinking of “gift broadly, it was suggested the gift might be material, but more likely other categories like wisdom, advice, intervention, spiritual encouragement, etc. It might be realized as a gift only in retrospect. I reached some of the interesting people I wrote about in the past in this newspaper. Below are the responses from some of them.

positive intentions. Throughout the years I often replay Sid’s words. His advice has made an enormous difference in my attitude towards others.  The funny thing is, having a tendency to be hard on myself, it took me decades before realizing that council also applied to me. Buck Noble Pie is the greatest gift of all! Each week my wife Kristen bakes a sugar free fruit pie just for me. I grow the organic berries and apples; she creates the golden brown treasures. Along with a bit of yogurt and a few nuts, it is my main meal every day -- it feeds both body and spirit. We work hard at our jobs, love up our family, and maintain the 1870s farmstead we call home. The weekly pie symbolizes the commitment we have to each other, the simple life style we choose to lead, and the fruits of our labors. Pie is love... the greatest gift of all! Lori Skoog One of the things that had the most impact on my life happened when I was 5 and 6 years old. Because my brother was frequently being taken to the Cleveland Clinic for treatment, I had to spend those two years with my Nana. She was from Albania, where my mother was born, and passed through Ellis Island with her 3 children in 1929. My grandfather had gone ahead to find work in Jamestown, NY. I might as well have been living in the “old countryâ€? as we spoke Albanian, ate traditional food and practiced customs from that culture. At that early age, I learned to be very independent and picked up on my Nana’s sense of humility. She created a very strong foundation for me. (In the December 13 issue, Part 2, several more responses will be given: Chet Fery, Peggy Hale, Sarah Hart, and Dr. Jim Goetz.)
