Hosta sale supports The Center in Brockport by Doug Hickerson Peggy Hale is an advocate for The Center in Brockport. At her 26 Meadowview Drive home she is selling hostas as a fundraiser and providing literature about The Center to her visitors. The Center is located at 133 State Street adjacent to the Erie Canal. It was formerly the “Sweden Senior Center.” It is now a community center, a gathering place with activities for all ages. Peggy wants the public to know the wider purpose and to take advantage of The Center’s offerings. On her own, Peggy’s project has included mail ordering 100 bare root hostas, then planting them in her garden, replanting some, mixing the soil to pot them, watering constantly, and displaying the pots on tables in her yard. After this work investment, and paying $100 for the order plus her other costs, she suggests a “donation of $4 per plant” in her recent Suburban News ad headlined “Benefit Sale.” Since placing the ad, her yard signs have a more customer-friendly message: “Take what you want, and pay what you can.” She borrowed that sales approach from the Hartley Family Band who used the slogan to sell their CDs and DVDs at a recent concert at the Morgan-Manning House. With a few sample plants at the street side, a sign invites visitors to look over the tables of plants near the house. Buying is on the honor system by leaving a donation in a jar. Or, she is glad to meet inquiring people and show them other plants she has for sale. “Some people

knock on the door,” she said. “I like meeting people that way. It’s been interesting.” “Pay what you can” means Peggy relies on the customer’s good will to support the work of service groups that meet at The Center. The Quilting Group makes about 300 quilts a year for the homeless and the needy families in our area. In its first year the Community Sewing Group teaches how to sew and participants make a variety of hand crafted items. The Knitting Club knits and crochets items for area cancer patients. Dresses for Girls around the World makes dresses for needy and underprivileged girls in the U.S. and around the world. Besides supporting its service groups, Peggy promotes the public’s use of The Center that has activities for all ages. Anyone can join the groups and other activities, she says. And, The Center is available to other community service organizations which can apply to use the facility. She has a supply of brochures advertising Sweden and Clarkson Recreation, including a wide variety of activities offered at The Center. Whatever the sales results, “I don’t worry about making money,” Peggy says. “I just remember that I want people to learn about the Center.” Note: Peggy will answer any questions by phone at 6374857.

Touring the Bergen Swamp by Kristina Gabalski Clarendon resident Bill DesJardin, a trustee of the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society, led a guided tour of the Bergen Swamp on Saturday morning, August 29. The tour followed a presentation he gave on the Swamp to the Clarendon Historical Society on August 19. The Bergen Swamp is known worldwide for its rare plants and animals. DesJardin says its biodiversity is the same as a tropical rain forest. The swamp was the first National Natural Historic Landmark and is also registered

Bill DesJardin said despite deer damage and invasive species, there are signs of re-generation in the Bergen Swamp. This photo shows new growth of cedar and white pine in a secondary marl area alongside a trail. Notice stalks of invasive Phragmites next to the cedar and pine growth. Swamp Preservation Society members are working to control invasive plant species which have found their way into the Swamp from adjacent agricultural areas and wildlife and which threaten the Swamp’s biodiversity. as a Living Museum with the New York State Board of Regents. DesJardin pointed out some of the unique features of the place, including an “exclosure” installed by members of the Preservation Society to protect the rare Pink Lady Slipper plant from deer. Other “exclosures” are located throughout the swamp to protect rare orchids which grow there.

Participants in the Aug. 29 guided tour entered the Bergen Swamp at Torpy Hill off West Sweden Road and hiked to the site of a primary marl deposition (shown left). The Bergen Swamp was formed by glacial activity thousands of years ago.

Opinion Reflect and remember Remember? September 11 is fast-approaching. That horrendous, tragic Tuesday morning in iconic New York City that changed lives forever. The lives of everyone, everywhere. Indeed, everyone remembers where he/she was, what he/she was doing, even what one was wearing - when the first news broke. It was incredible, unbelievable. Smoke billowing black, flames burning orange, all escaping into the brightest blue sky. Reporters brought it into our offices, and later into the living rooms of our homes. We saw - and felt in poignant scene after scene - the bravery and courage of trained professionals and ordinary people. How was it he or she or they survived? But he or she or they did not. So many questions, but only some answers. People searched for loved ones, for days into nights. Candles and posters all lit and hung. And, of course, people

prayed, in churches and/or in the streets. In groups and/ or alone. Mighty America - attacked by people who hated us. Incomprehensible surely. We are the United States of America. Throughout the ensuing weeks, people helped one another. Our leaders stood strong. The world offered condolences and shared our tears. Our global neighbors offered assistance in meaningful ways. Fourteen years have passed. People move on - or not. People remember - or not. Most of us have had more good days than bad. Agreed? For several years, the Village of Spencerport, Spencerport Fire Department and Rotary Club have coordinated a Remembrance Ceremony to recognize and remember the victims, the survivors, the first responders, our hometown heroes and veterans. Due to dwindling attendance, it has been a mutual decision to commemorate only on “anniversary years.” That means no formal event this year. Remember? Always. In your own way, please take time to reflect and remember on Friday, September 11. Appreciate your family, friends, freedom and safety. Take a walk together. Pet the dog. Say thank-you to someone. God Bless America! God Bless Us All! Carol J. Nellis-Ewell Spencerport

Fires took their toll on Hilton’s Main Street 50th anniversary of the 1965 Great Fire of Hilton marked in September by David Crumb, Hilton Historian Part two of two Hilton’s Main Street FIres (Taken from Hilton- U.S.A. by Leith Wright, 1985). 1910 -- Green’s Drug Store Block: northwest corner of Main Street and Lake Avenue (present day site of Hilton Pharmacy). Contained in this block were Joseph Ingham’s Hardware, William Wood’s general store, The Hilton Record news office, The Hilton Telephone Company, and Ida Magee’s dressmaking shop along with two apartments. Minnie Sabin’s Bakery next door was also consumed. Orange Green, proprietor of the block, after two fires built the present day beige brick building known today as Hilton Pharmacy. 1911 -- January 2: Piggott Block and hotel (southwest corner of Main Street and South Avenue – former site of Bates Block). The fire discovered in a clothing store in the block destroyed everything including the Parma Grange, K.O.T.M meeting rooms along with several other businesses. Village resident 63-year old Jim Goodno dropped dead of a heart attack as he witnessed the scene. Nine fires devastated the village in the early 1900s. However, through good leadership and cooperation among businessmen, Hilton was quickly rebuilt to the Main Street many can still remember. in the center, the shoe repair shop, the Pleasure Shop, The Gas and Electric, a jewelry store, two barber shops, the Candy Kitchen, a gas station, a movie theater and numerous apartments all contributed to an all-American Main Street where people came to town to shop, see each other, share the news and gossip, and stay in touch. But the story is not over: • March 21, Sunday 1965: The Great Fire of Hilton: (North Main Street going east from the State Bank of Hilton to the Hilton Fire Hall and Town Offices). The three fires of 1903 were considered most devastating, but were growing dim in the community’s aggregate memory. The visitation of fiery combustion that took place on March 21, 1965 made the 1903 fires pale in comparison.

The 1965 Great Fire of Hilton destroyed 80% of Main Street.

Sometime around 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning, Margaret Culverhouse, looking out her south kitchen window, noticed smoke coming out of the rear of the furniture store. She called the fire department. About the same time, Volunteer Fireman Russell Wright was driving into the Village and saw flames in the furniture store window, and further sounded the alarm to “code red.” Soon the Hilton Fire Department was on the scene along with volunteer fire departments from Walker, North Greece, Spencerport, and many other towns from across Western New York. It was concluded that 80% of Main Street had been destroyed. News travelled far and wide. Governor Nelson Rockefeller declared Hilton a disaster area. Weather

was an issue. High winds prevailed, then sleet and snow came. The water from fire hoses froze on ladders and equipment, the streets and sidewalks below, and even the men holding the hoses. All the while the fire raged in the old buildings. Explosions occurred sending store contents and glass across the street and putting bystanders in peril. The store windows on the buildings on the south side of Main Street shattered and signage melted from the heat. Hundreds of people came to witness the devastation and the horror of what was happening. Pvt. E-4 Ed Gable was serving in the army in Dicenza, near Venice, Italy and learned the news of his hometown being burned-out as he read the Stars and Stripes, an Army newsletter several days later.

The program is scheduled for Monday, September 21 at the Hilton Firemen’s Exempt on South Avenue. The program is free to the public and begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A commemorative calendar has been created and will be available for sale following the program.

“August Challenge” at Lakeview a huge success - For the past seven years, Lakeview Community Church has held an “August Challenge” to benefit the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf. This year’s goal was to collect 550 cans of tuna fish. With the help of family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers, the donations more than doubled the challenge goal in that 1,221 cans of tuna fish were collected. Many worked together to make it happen, including the congregation, neighbors of the church, friends of Unionville Station in Hilton, and monetary gifts from the employees of Union Scrap. The 1,221 cans of donated tuna fish will go to the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf where Lakeview Community Church is known as “The Little Church with a Big Heart.” Provided photo.

South Sudan Village Care Foundation raises funds On Friday, October 2 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at the Rochester Club Ballroom, 120 East Avenue, the South Sudan Village Care Foundation (SSVCF) will be holding its third annual fundraiser. The theme is “Saving Lives, Building Hope.” The Foundation has built and is operating a small medical clinic in Panrieng, Unity State, South Sudan. The clinic provides needed care to a population that would otherwise have no medical services. It is the dream of Palath Thonchar, the founder, and a former Lost Boy of

Sudan. He has inspiring tales of his life since coming to Rochester in 2001. The event features dinner, entertainment, gift basket auctions and raffle items as well as an opportunity to learn about Palath’s story, and hear about the accomplishments of the clinic. Guests will also be able to ask questions and learn about current and future needs of the clinic. Tickets are available as single open seating or as reserved tables for 8 or 10 by visiting southsudanvillagecare.org. Provided information

Starting September 24, Braille Transcription classes will be offered at the Gates/Spencerport Ambulance building in Spencerport. The course involves nine months of weekly meetings on Thursday mornings and approximately two to three hours per day of weekly homework. Students will learn how to transcribe English into braille. The braille group consists of all volunteers working from home. Students can set their own schedule and receive support from the group. After receiving the final certification from the Library of Congress, students can join the group in transcribing books, textbooks, cookbooks, hymnals and math for children and adults. There is a nominal cost for the course, however the Lions Braille Service of Spencerport will provide the teacher, manuals, paper, the Brailler and limitless encouragement to help students succeed. This rewarding volunteer endeavor will afford one the opportunity to “make a difference.” A limited number of spaces are available. For information and sign-up call Instructor Sue Keegan at 967-6702, or Chairperson Judy Smith at 392-3153. Provided information

Spencerport: A large and loving circle of family and friends lost a remarkable man on August 26, 2015 when Edward Leslie DeMeritt died at the age of 91. He is survived by five children: E. Gordon (Linda), Jeffery A. (Claudia), Joyce D. Klein (A. Andrew), Paul A. (Lorinda), and Daniel K. (Tamara); 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his brother Roger (Gloria) and sister Dorothy Rush (Carl), and was predeceased by his wife Barbara Cortright DeMeritt in 2008 after 59 years of marriage. Ed was active in the Lutheran Church, and an avid bridge player. He enjoyed spending time with his extended family and many friends. Barb and Ed held fond memories of their 39 years in Spencerport where they reared their family. Following his 1986 retirement

from a 38-year career with RG&E, Ed and Barb enjoyed their home on Conesus Lake and their winter residence in North Port, Florida. Ed had been living with his daughter in Mumford, at the time of his death. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and in 1967 with a master’s degree in Nuclear Health Physics. During WWII, Ed served as Captain in the Army Air Corps in Europe. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 5015 Lakeville Rd. (Rt. 20A), Geneseo, NY, at 2PM Sunday, September 6; interment will follow immediately at Fairfield Cemetery, Spencerport, NY. Memorial Contributions can be made to Conesus Lake Association, Inc. P.O. Box 637, Lakeville, NY 14480. To share a memory or leave a condolence visit: www.alhartfuneralhome.com.
