Seed catalog time! by Kristina Gabalski
EMAIL US Your News ITeMs editor@westsidenewsny.com
That special time of year for gardeners has arrived: seed catalog time! These glossy, colorful and enticing publications fill the mailbox just after Christmas. Now is the time to sit back and take in all the information, beautiful photos and inspiration seed catalogs provide. If you have never grown flowers or vegetables from seed before, consider trying a few varieties in 2024. Many flowers and vegetables can be direct-sown in the spring right into the garden, while others benefit from the extra care and protection of starting inside – the seed catalog and packet will provide guidance on this. West Virginia University Extension offers tips for making the most out of your seed catalogs. They suggest the best way to start is by reviewing your records from the previous growing year. Look at what varieties performed best in your garden and which varieties did not do as well as hoped. Consider trying new varieties this year. Starting plants from seed is an economical way to obtain fresh and nutritious fruits and vegetables as well as herbs and flowers, but good seeds are not cheap, so make sure to do your homework before ordering. Know your hardiness zone – the USDA just released an updated Plant Hardiness Zone Map late in 2023. Hardiness zones are based on the average annual minimum temperature in your area and help you determine which plants will thrive in your location. Grow plants that are hardy for your area. WVU Extension advises to underestimate your need for seeds and overestimate your need for space. The beautiful color photos in seed catalogs as well as the exciting new varieties introduced each year can be very tempting and it is easy to overbuy seeds. Remember you only have so much space. Measure the amount of space you have for sowing and create a map using the mature size of plants you intend to grow. Overcrowding in the garden can lead to pest problems and disease – give yourself plenty of room for plants. Keep a seed journal to track what seeds
Happy New Year!!! This is a happy time for gardeners as they dream about and plan for the upcoming growing season with the help of new seed catalogs! Seed catalogs can help you grow your best garden yet, if you know how to make use of all the information they provide. Photo by Kristina Gabalski. you have purchased from year to year and the amount of produce you have grown. Check your seed catalog for charts that explain common terms and abbreviations included in seed descriptions. Here are a few common terms of which to be aware: •Days to maturity – the number of days to harvest expected after planting transplants. •Open pollinated (OP) – a plant pollinated by another plant, rather than pollinating itself. These varieties come true to seed and are what you want if you will be saving seed. •Hybrid – seeds produced from a cross of two or more varieties. Seeds saved from hybrids result in plants that are not identical to the parent plants. F1
refers to first generation hybrids; F2 refers to second generation hybrids. •Disease resistant – often expressed with abbreviations such as “V” for Verticillium Wilt – this indicates the degree of disease resistance exhibited by the plant. Each catalog should explain their abbreviations for disease resistance. •Treated – treated seeds are coated with fungicide or insecticide to protect them from disease and pests during germination and seedling growth. Color may be added to these seeds to differentiate them from untreated seed. A well-planned garden is more likely to be successful – seed catalogs are a great resource for choosing varieties that will meet your needs and thrive in your garden conditions.

It is hard enough for a freshman to break into the lineup of any Division I hockey program and to do so with a nationally ranked team such as the Big Red from Cornell University is doubly impressive, but Churchville native Jake Kraft is doing just that. At the recent Adirondack Winter Invitational held at historic Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, the 5’8”, 170 lb. Kraft was the extra forward for the first game against the University of Massachusetts but was elevated to top line left wing for the championship game versus Arizona State University. “It’s definitely exciting; I think more (opportunity) than I expected Jake Kraft. Provided photo. coming in (this year),” Kraft said. “I just go out and work as hard as I can every day to try to get the most opportunity and try to see where I fit in to the team.” Kraft scored his first collegiate goal on home ice at Lynah Rink against Harvard November 11 after registering his first two points – assists – in the second series of the season at Yale and Brown University. He had played in all 13 games of the season as the calendar turned to January. He started getting serious about hockey at 13 years old and dressed with the Rochester Monarchs for two seasons before jumping to the Buffalo Jr. Sabres for his 15U and 16U campaigns, the latter where he scored 39 points in 50 games. Then came two prep seasons with the Kent School in Connecticut, though the first was abbreviated due to the pandemic. His 2021-22 year with 25 goals and 44 points in 28 games put him on the USHL radar and he joined Cedar Rapids for the 2022-23 season where he played with current teammate, Ryan Walsh, from Penfield. There he scored 17 goals with 32 points in 56 games and committed to Cornell that December. “He’s fast, he’s physical for being his size but I think his biggest asset is his speed; he can get to
Churchville native Jake Kraft on the ice for Cornell. Provided photo. places really quick which is nice,” Walsh said about his former and current teammate. “He’s a great passer and can score so he’s a great all-around player, but his speed is his biggest attribute which is great to be on a line with. “We have ten freshmen on the team, which is a lot, so (head coach Mike) Schafer definitely giving us a lot of opportunities to fill big roles early on which helps build confidence right away and shows that he trusts you a little bit.” “I’ve always been an undersized guy, so I feel like I try to fight my way through everything,” Kraft said. “It’s accumulated over the years, but definitely picked up in the more physical college game.”
As for why Kraft chose to play college hockey at Cornell? “I always knew the tradition of Cornell (hockey) was second to none and being close to home was definitely something so my parents can get up and watch pretty much every game,” Kraft said. “And then once I toured, I fell in love with it…it felt like home.” Kraft does have at least one quirk where he is often the first player off the ice after a pre-game warmup. “I always kind of just got off the ice first; I try to be one of the last guys on the ice when we go out, so just keep it short and sweet. Maybe a little superstition is involved.” No need to change what has obviously been working.

Winter Serenades 2024 in Brockport Brockport’s annual Winter Serenades music series begins soon. These Sunday afternoon performances begin at 3 p.m. on January 21, February 4, February 18, and March 3. They are hosted by the Village of Brockport and fully funded by generous donations from local community members and businesses. The winter events are all held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on the corner of Main and State Streets. They are followed by an opportunity to visit with friends and musicians at a reception in the church hall upstairs. St. Luke’s provides a live-stream of the performances that can be viewed from anywhere, so you can attend virtually if unable to attend in person. The YouTube live-stream can be accessed at the church’s website, stlukesbrockport.org. On January 21, Michael Lasser, Alan Jones, and Jessica Ann Best return by popular demand. This year they will focus on songs of George and Ira Gershwin. Lasser, author of several books and the former host of a long-running public radio program with music from the Great American Songbook, says that the two brothers are among the greatest American songwriters. “They loved each other deeply, and often wrote in the same room at a piano and a card table. They quarreled now and then but also helped one another past a snag in the music or the words. They were New Yorkers from birth, and their songs have an urban, even a New York, feel.”
Join Michael Lasser, Jessica Ann Best, and Alan Jones for a program they call “Sweet and Low Down: The Gershwins’ New York.” The Laura Dubin Trio, a popular Rochester group that plays great jazz and much more, will perform February 4. Personable and talented, they appeal to a wide audience On February 18 there will be another Michael Lasser presentation with two Rochester singers new to Brockport: Connie Fredericks-Malone and Reuben J. Tapp. The special program is a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. Another returning favorite, by popular demand, Chris Wilson concludes the winter series on March 3. His voice and presence glow inside St Luke’s. As always, there are no tickets required and no admission charge. There will be an opportunity to meet after the concert for friendly talk and light refreshments. Those with questions can check the Village website, brockportny.org. On the Village site, go to Quick Links and sign up at “Get Notifications” to be reminded about the concerts and also kept informed regarding changes to the schedule. Hilton Evening of Jazz to feature Chris Minh Doky All Stars Band The Hilton School District Jazz Department and Hilton Music Boosters present the 20th annual Hilton Evening of Jazz on Friday, February 9, at 7 p.m. at Hilton High School auditorium, 400 East Avenue, Hilton. This year’s program features the Chris Minh Doky All Stars Band, including Dennis Chambers and Bill Evans. “This concert gives our students an amazing experience every year,” said music teacher and Hilton’s Jazz Ensemble director Jared Streiff. “These are world-renowned artists, and they’ve been nominated for multiple Grammys. They’ve performed at the Jazz Festival last year, and we’re excited to welcome them back to Rochester, and this time it will include our community’s young musicians.” Electric and acoustic bass guitarist, Chris Minh Doky first performed as a young musician in Denmark, but, still in his teens, moved to New York where famed jazz guitarist Mike Stern added him to his band. Throughout his career, Doky has earned four Grammy® nominations and remains a strong
player on the international jazz stage. He bolstered his career and earned a rock star aura by appearing in arenas with stars of the pop world. In what might seem a paradox, Doky also captured ears and hearts in the classical universe and has performed in opera houses, with symphony orchestras, ballet companies and opera singers. Every member of this band with Chris Minh Doky – including Bill Evans (sax), Dennis Chambers (drums), George Whitty (keys) and David Gilmore (guitar) – has collaborated for many years with Doky, both as members of his bands, world tours, recordings, and Bill Evans’ Soul Bop Band. Evans is a world class saxophonist and producer who made his debut on the international music scene in the 1980s with Miles Davis. This led to touring and recording with John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, and Mick Jagger to name but a few. Chambers is an American drummer who has recorded and performed with John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/ Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, Niacin, Mike Stern, CAB, Greg Howe, and many others. Whitty is a Grammy-award winning keyboardist and has spent decades as a musician performing some of the best-selling records of all time: Santana’s “Supernatural” (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion’s “Falling Into You” and “These are Special Times,” and more than 100 other CDs. Gilmore, born in Boston, studied piano, drums and percussion, taking up guitar studies at 15 with John Baboian and Randy Roos and then at New York University with sax titan Joe Lovano and pianist Jim McNeely. In addition to recording and touring, Gilmore teaches Guitar Studies at Berklee College of Music and conducts master classes around the world. Tickets are $25 and include performances by the Merton Williams Middle School and Hilton High School Jazz Ensembles and will take place at the Hilton High School auditorium, 400 East Avenue, Hilton. The event is a Hilton Music Boosters fundraiser, supporting the cost of student music group trips. To purchase tickets, visit www.showtix4u.com or contact Jared Streiff at 392-1000, ext. 2293. Newly-elected Sweden officials sworn in The Town of Sweden held a swearing-in ceremony for officials who won election or re-election in November. Taking the oath of office for the first time were new council members Tyler Sharpe and Adam Staskiewski. Patricia Hayles was elected to her first term as Supervisor, following six years as councilperson. Scott Maar was appointed to the town board seat vacated by Hayles on December 31. Finally, long-term Tax Receiver Kathy Bahr-Seever and Highway Superintendent Brian Ingraham renewed their oaths. The new board members joined Councilperson Gary Sullivan to conduct the 2024 Organizational Meeting at which the Town’s annual appointments, contracts and procedures were established. Supervisor Hayles announced an agenda of pursuing water district expansion and assigned board members to liaison positions for the year. She also appointed Scott Maar as deputy supervisor. The board next meets on January 9; board meetings are generally held the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, except for June, July and August when they only meet on the fourth Tuesday. Meetings begin at 6 p.m. Provided information and photo ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Opinion & Comments Builders’ association comments on start of legislation session As session gets underway, policymakers need to take notice of the recent study, which identified New York as being dead last in the country for creating a pro-construction environment. The study made it quite clear why New York is last and what it needs to do in order to improve its ranking. Our chief concern continues to be the utilization of Project Labor Agreements and the application of prevailing wages to private work. Both items do nothing more than steer contracts to preferred constituents and make New York less affordable for all of us. Further, New York continues to be the last state in the nation with the antiquated Scaffold Law and an overly generous and often fraudulent Workers Compensation program both of which blow up the cost of insurance. All of that added cost burden is
transitioned to projects making them extremely unaffordable. It’s why the state continues to use a pothole approach to repairing our roads, bridges, sewers and other public infrastructure. It’s also a key driver in why we continue to slowly fix our energy grid and why vast areas of the state don’t have access to broadband. The good news is there is a solution. The Legislature can begin to fix the problem by ending their use of harmful mandates that drive up the cost of construction. Doing so will start to address New York’s affordability crisis and improve the quality of life for all of us.

Monroe County launches 2024 Conservation Tree & Shrub Program The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District has released the spring 2024 species list for its annual Conservation Tree & Shrub program. For 48 years, the District has hosted this successful program, with nearly 22,000 native and naturalized trees and shrubs being distributed to over 500 landowners last year alone for local conservation purposes. With almost 40 different species including hardwoods, bare-root conifers, shrubs, and variety packs, the District is doing its part supporting conservation efforts, while assisting residents in beautifying their community. Order plants now through March 1 and pick up on April 18 or 19 ready to be planted. They don’t just offer trees and shrubs. In addition to plants, the District offers other products great for conservation projects including bat and bluebird houses, seed mixes, and more. The District added six hardwoods and one new item: live stakes. The new items are all great conservation species, providing numerous benefits from wildlife protection and food to increasing property aesthetics. New this year are Pin Oak, American Hazelnut, Northern Catalpa, Northern Bayberry, Common Serviceberry, Choke Cherry, and Streamco Willow live stakes. Popular best-sellers like Paper Birch, White Spruce, and Tulip Poplar also returned this year. By planting these native plants you can increase wildlife habitat, provide a windbreak, reduce erosion and stormwater runoff, do your part in being climate resilient, and help create pollinator habitat. Check out all the benefits of these and other

4-H educator receives special award The 2023 Annual Meeting of the New York State 4-H Educators Association Conference took place in November in Cortland, New York. At the conference, 4-H Youth Development Educator Jessica Reid was presented with a Special Service Award by her peers. The New York State 4-H Special Service Award recognizes members of the professional association who have developed a new technique in programming, worked successfully with new audiences, and /or have been innovative in utilizing resources, people and situations. Jessica was nominated for the award by Monroe County 4H Team Leader, Susan Coyle. Her application was supported by letters of recommendation from Monroe County teacher Sheila Egan, CCE-Monroe Nutrition Educator Ally Miller, Cornell Vegetable Team Extension Aide Lori Koenick, and Agape Haven of Abundance Director Julia Oakley. Jessica’s technology skills were vital in transitioning programs to virtual formats during the pandemic. Additionally, she has great interest in Japanese and Korean culture, leading her to offer camp days for youth to learn with her. Jessica started a teen group that included many youth from refugee families, that works to improve their community through development of projects such as an anti-violence video, planting community gardens, and making scarves for winter coat giveaways. Sheila Eagan, local teacher, shared, “The staff and students that she works with are always excited to see her and curious what fun experiments, new books and interesting facts they are going to learn. YouTube cooking series for older adults surpasses one million views The New York State Office for the Aging’s (NYSOFA) monthly cooking demonstration series has reached one million views on YouTube. “What’s Cooking with NYSOFA” also streams live each month on Facebook, where it generated more than 980,000 views during its most recent 2022-2023 season. The fourth season of “What’s Cooking” is set for a January premiere. As part of its role in the statewide SNAPEd NY program, NYSOFA launched “What’s Cooking” in 2021 as a Zoom livestream from an iPad hosted by Registered Dietician Wendy Beckman. NYSOFA enlisted the New York Media Services Center (MSC) the following year to transform its second season into a full-fledged production with helpful graphics and close-ups of food preparation, accompanied by a statewide marketing campaign. “What’s Cooking” has a greater impact than ever, helping older adults learn more about affordable ways to add vegetables into dishes, vary protein while cooking, keep portion sizes in check, and more.
“During the pandemic, the SNAP-Ed nutrition program had to quickly pivot away from in-person classes, so going virtual was a great way to reach older adults who were encouraged to stay at home,” Beckman said. “We were hopeful that the food demonstrations would engage people who were feeling isolated to try some healthy recipes. I am amazed by what we’ve accomplished since then, building a homegrown program into a world-class production.” “Even though the show’s main goal is to help older New Yorkers prepare healthier meals and better understand nutrition, what’s great about it is that anyone can jump in and learn something new,” said MSC producer Joe Walsh. “We’re really excited to be a part of the project, but even more thrilled that so many people have taken to it.” Episodes of ”What’s Cooking” typically run around 15 minutes, making them more accessible and easier to follow than a full-length cooking show on broadcast television. The whole series is always free to watch on You-
Tube and new episodes air on the last Friday of each month at 12:30 p.m. on Facebook. NYSOFA’s monthly SNAP-Ed NY nutrition programs also include a livestream called “Ask The Experts: Nutrition Edition,” hosted
by NYSOFA Registered Dietitian Lisbeth Irish and guests. The program invites viewers to ask nutrition-related questions that concern older adults. Provided information

The Hilton Networking Group held its annual holiday party on December 14.
Hilton Networking Group awards business grant The Hilton Networking Group (HNG) awarded its first annual business grant of $5,000 in December 2023. Allison Burke, of Hilton, was awarded the grant during an awards presentation and grant signing alongside members of the HNG at their annual holiday party at Braddock Bay Tavern and Grill on December 14. Burke is launching “Social Soup,” a marketing business that supports small businesses through content creation, marketing strategies, education, and support. “Social Soup will create an opportunity to help small business resolve challenges that keep them from reaching their ideal customers and clients,” says Burke. She adds, “I know the pains that small business owners face. They must play CEO, CFO, marketing director and manager…all while running their business. The world of social media and online advertising has evolved into a complex landscape. Social Soup will provide small business owners accessible and affordable support to reach their client base.” Pete Miles, owner of the Hilton Family Pharmacy & Coffee Corner and member of the Hilton Networking Group, was in attendance for the ceremony. “I’m excited to be a part of the HNG and to help give back to the community. When one locally-owned business is healthy the other local businesses, and the community, benefit.” Miles adds, “I look forward to watching Allison’s business take off. Her business plan is driven towards providing excellent customer service. You can’t overstate how important that is. I own a hometown pharmacy in Hilton. My business is built on providing customers great personal service. Small businesses are the best at providing that.” In addition to the business grant, the Hilton Networking Group also provided two $1,000 scholarships to students from Hilton High School to attend
