Record number of players take the field on Westside’s Opening Day Challenger Baseball is a division of Little League Baseball that brings together boys and girls ages 5 to 18 who are physically and/or mentally challenged. The games are structured to support the success of all players. Traditional rules are modified and the focus is always on having fun while learning the game of baseball. No score is kept, each player bats every inning, and everyone plays the entire game. Each player is assigned “buddies” who work to ensure safety and success. The Brockport Bisons Baseball teams have volunteered their time to assist as “buddies.” The enthusiasm and spirit that the Westside Challenger Baseball player brings to the game is very infectious to “buddies” and fans alike. A record crowd attended Opening Day, supporting every hit and run by the Challenger Baseball players. The players come from Brockport, Hamlin, Sweden,

“Drops of Sunshine” honor Northwood Elementary secretary Family, friends, students and colleagues gathered in front of Northwood Elementary School in Hilton to dedicate the school’s new playground to Pat Romansky, beloved secretary and friend. Romansky’s family, including her mother, Gerri Stamski; husband, John Romansky; sons John Jr. and Michael, their wives and children, in-laws, nieces and nephews, were in attendance. “To memorialize Pat by dedicating this playground to her is amazing,” said John Romansky. “Our family is honored to participate in this ceremony.” “For 23 years, Pat deeply touched our lives,” said Principal Kirk Ashton. “She was able to connect with everyone and made us all feel like family. Pat filled our halls and hearts with joy.” Students Madalyn Mascadri, Giana Gramse and Carlie Spall sang “Sunshine on My Shoulders” before Ashton revealed the playground sign that states, “This playground is dedicated in memory of Pat Romansky, ‘Northwood’s Sunshine’ 2014.” The sign features a picture of a sun created with students’ fingerprints. Students gave a yellow marble to each person in the audience to symbolize a drop of sunshine. People were then invited to drop the marble in an opening at the top of the sign. The light shining through the marbles illustrates the spread of sunshine. The ceremony also included a performance by the Northwood Chorus and a reading of the poem, “Can You Just Imagine” by Toni Kane and edited by Laura Mayer and Donna Serenka, Northwood teachers.

Volunteer honoree applications available Greece Community Partners have again planned a recognition ceremony and reception to honor 25 community volunteers. The event will be Saturday, August 15, at 2 p.m. in the Greece Community Center. Many people volunteer time and effort to continue to

improve the quality of life in Greece - yet may go unrecognized, says Dick Gretzinger, Chairman of Greece Community Partners. “In the last 12 years we have recognized 287 volunteers at this event. We believe that many organizations in Greece have volunteers that have not been recognized in the past,” he said. The four presenters are Senator Joe Robach; Don Riley, VP Mark VI Construction; Todd Baxter, Executive Director, Veterans Outreach Center and Sarah Lentini, President and CEO of the Greece Chamber of Commerce. Organizations, friends, spouses, children and neighbors are invited to submit the names of individuals who have made a significant contribution to the Greece community. They may or may not be a resident of Greece. Contact Gretzinger for information and applications: 225-3276. Provided information

Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band to launch 32nd concert season June 17 The Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band under the direction of Dr. Charles P. Schmidt, will begin its 32nd season with a concert on Wednesday, June 17 at the Gazebo in Centeninal Park at the Hilton Village Community Center. The June 17 concert will be presented immediately following the Historical Society’s Annual Strawberry Social at the Community Center. The Gazebo Band’s series of free public concerts will be held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. (rain or shine) on the following dates: June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8, July 15, and July 22. The annual patriotic concert in Hilton will be played on July 1. The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and enjoy each concert. The band plays a variety of musical styles, including traditional marches, popular music, Broadway and movie themes, patriotic music, as well as solo features. The Gazebo Band was founded in 1984 and was first directed by Hilton Music Educator Gordon Bascom. The original group of approximately a dozen players performed for the Village of Hilton Centennial celebration and the dedication of the Gazebo at Centennial Park. The band’s current conductor, Dr. Charles Schmidt, is in his seventh year of directing the band. Mary Reazor, the last remaining charter member of the band, functions as the band’s manager, music librarian, and lead trombonist. The Gazebo Band is an all-volunteer organization that relies primarily on donations from the community. The band is comprised of many dedicated musicians from across Monroe and Orleans counties, who rehearse from March 1 through July in order to make the free summer concerts possible. In recent years, the band has expanded its schedule to include a fall rehearsal season and holiday concerts. From its beginning, the band’s primary purpose has been to give area adult musicians a place to enjoy their musical gifts and at the same time share them with the broader community. Opinion/Comments Storage unit project not in accordance with Comp. Plan On May 13 the Ogden Town Board held a public hearing to consider an application to allow for the application of the Self Service Storage Overlay District. The 12.610+/acre parcel in question is on the south side of NYS Route 31 and adjacent to numerous residential homes. This west side neighborhood has been historically rural agricultural and is zoned R-1. Furthermore, the Future Land Use Map does not designate this parcel for commercial development and is currently being rented and farmed. The 31 West Neighborhood Association would like to thank everyone who attended the public hearing. We would also like to thank the Ogden Town Board for patiently listening to the numerous residents that voiced their strong opposition. The Town Board will now review

In this series of articles, Westside News Inc. asks owners of small businesses in the readership about their

Teresa Fletcher Ogden

experiences, how they have adapted their business plan to meet the needs of the marketplace and economy and what they have learned in the process. This week’s “In Business” features Caroline’s Hair Salon and Day Spa. Evelyn Dow Editor, Westside News Inc.

Over 30 years in cosmetology business yields many friendships, says Caroline by Kristina Gabalski “After 34 years, I still love what I do,” says Caroline Day, owner/stylist at Caroline’s Hair Salon & Day Spa located at 5082 Ridge Road West (just west of the Route 259 intersection) in Spencerport. Caroline has owned her present location since 2007, prior to that, she worked in the Spencerport area at Enrico’s and partnered in ownership at both Fine Lines Hair Design and Village Designs. Q: How is business? “Business is very good, it is very busy,” Caroline says. “Business has spread by word of mouth, that’s the biggest seller,” she says. Her website, (http://carolineshairsalonanddayspa.com) is also helpful, she adds. Caroline says in the past, the business offered facials and massage, but she notes, “It’s hard to find somebody who will put forth the effort,” needed to build clientele. “Right now, we’re focusing on hair and nails. We also have electrolysis and waxing.” Caroline’s current team of professionals (she rents out the chairs in her salon) have worked in the business for years. “I have a good group of girls,” she observes. “It’s so important. Everybody has got at least ten years experience.” The Hair Salon & Day Spa offers clients professional hair and styling products that can’t be found outside “a professional salon,” Caroline adds, and she and her operators use top of the line hair colors and other products, “... we don’t skimp,” she says. Q: What are your biggest challenges? “Finding people who want to put in the time to build clientele,” Caroline notes of potential operators for her shop. When someone is just starting out, Caroline says she will work with them because it takes time, patience and perseverance to grow business and clientele.

She, herself, has been self-employed since 1981 and at that time her commission was her rent. “You could sit from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and you could have one client or twenty. You have to be willing to be patient,” she says, “to build a personal base of clients who are looking for you.” Q: What do you like best about your business? “The personal relationships with clients,” Caroline says. “We have the best customers in the world. They are like family. They know about your life and you know about theirs.” During a recent medical leave, Caroline says she received cards, letters and flowers from her clients. “They become part of your family,” she says. Q: What are your future plans for the business? “I’m going to be doing this until I’m 110,” she jokes, but she is serious about sticking with her business well into the future. “I’m not planning on going anywhere,” she says. “I can’t just walk away, there are too many people I dearly love. I can’t imagine going to work everyday if I didn’t love what I do.” Her business is located in a former private home. The house was 105 years old when Caroline bought it and she renovated it from the ground up. “It has a homey feeling, where people can get comfortable,” she says. “There is a good feeling when you walk in.” Q: What is your advice for someone considering starting a business? “Do your homework,” she advises, “people think it’s easy and it’s not. When you are the owner, everybody depends on you. It’s a lot of responsibility. Be aware of all that’s involved. It’s not just opening a door and walking in.” Open for business: The shop is open Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday. Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hours can vary by operator. all information that was submitted for the record. Since the rezoning application is not in accordance with the 2012 Town of Ogden Comprehensive Plan, as required by the State of New York, we would expect the Town Board to deny the rezoning request. Lastly, we would like to communicate our support for North Coast Self Storage, LLC which is in the beginning stages of construction and should be open for business in 12-14 weeks. This commercial development is appropriately located in the Heritage Commercial District and is in accordance with the comprehensive plan.

Strong West hosts Open House for renovated second floor by Kristina Gabalski More than one hundred people got a first glimpse of the renovated second floor of Strong West in Brockport during an open house, Saturday, May 30. The second floor of the former Lakeside Hospital is now home to the Wilmot Cancer Institute, Interlakes Oncology and Hematology and Brockport Medical Associates, a primary care provider. The offices were formerly housed on the ground floor of the Strong West complex.

Clarkson Town Councilperson Jackie Smith said she was very pleased with the renovation, which increases floor space for both offices. “It’s a wonderful addition to the community,” she said, and noted that URMC/ Strong West has “built a partnership with the community. They give back to the community and are willing to do whatever is needed. It’s a great opportunity for everyone.” The two offices were scheduled to open at the new second floor location June 1.

DeFelice, totem pole lift Holley to Section V Title by Warren Kozireski Senior Joe DeFelice knocked in two runs, scored three and struck out the last ten batters of the game in relief as Holley defeated East Rochester 6-2 to win the Class CC Section V baseball title. The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jon Bower led off with a single to left field, stole second and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. DeFelice tripled him home and later scored on an RBI single by Lucas Silvis. ER scored once in the first and once in the third inning to tie the contest 2-2. The Bombers then threatened in the fourth with runners at second and third with one out, but Hawks starting pitcher Dylan Hillabush worked out of trouble inducing a 63 groundout with the infield in and a foul-out to catcher Josh Porter to end the inning. The Hawks took the lead for good in the sixth as DeFelice collected an infield hit - Holley’s first since the first inning - and went to second base on an errant pickoff attempt. Silvis singled him home and later went to second on a

fielder’s choice before Justin Parker had a clutch two-out hit over the second baseman’s head to drive in the run and put the Hawks up 4-2. They plated two more insurance runs in the seventh with a two-out rally started on a fielding error. DeFelice tripled home the run and Silvis followed with his third RBI hit for the 6-2 lead. But they wouldn’t need the insurance as DeFelice came on in relief and struck out ten batters in three innings (one batter reached on a strikeout-wild pitch). “This (the title) was a goal since the beginning and this team has been working hard ever since and it’s exciting,” DeFelice said. “I tried to stay composed (on the mound). We have a little saying ‘never get comfortable’ and that’s what I was trying to do. “Silvis is clutch all the time. He likes those big moments and is always ready for them - that’s the type of guy he is - and he always comes through.” “I wanted Dylan to get us a good start, get some runs and I wanted to bring in my best when it came to crunch time,”

Class CC Coach of the Year Jason Cole said. “That was the best I’ve seen him (DeFelice) throw all year. We developed a curve ball this year and he used it appropriately.” DeFelice was named the regular season and tournament Most Valuable Player. The Coach of the Year honor is Cole’s second. The team posed for a team photo on the Dwyer Stadium field after the win with a totem pole - a pickup from their trip to Myrtle Beach in April. “My first sectional winning team had a piggy bank and they see that in my office and they wanted to win sectionals and found a symbol for this season. They rub it before the game for good luck. “We kept making it to the semifinals and losing out. Our main goal for this group coming back was to push through the end and get to that next step. I’m proud of these guys.” The Hawks season ended in the Class C state qualifier game with a 6-3 loss to Geneseo. Silvis, DeFelice, Porter and Bower all finished their high school athletic careers.

Senior catcher Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) has been named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Softball Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She becomes the college’s first three time Academic All-American, an honor she also earned in 2013 and 2014. She batted .397 this spring with eight doubles, two triples, and three home runs, while combining for a .578 slugging percentage in 2015. She was also a perfect 12-12 on stolen bases with 34 starts this year. She earned Skyline Conference Second Team Honors as a catcher and was named to the 2015 NFCA All-Region Third Team. She was also named the 2014-2015 Sage Female Co-Athlete of the Year after earning a selection as the 2015 team’s Gator of the Year as the squad’s Most Valuable Player. Head softball coach Jamie Brown said of Beikirch, “There isn’t anything Kristen wouldn’t have done to help her team win.” Brown continued, “She works extremely hard and has been such a tremendous player for us. Kristen has

been such a consistent, remarkable player for four years. This year, like the others, she was one of the best players in our conference. She is ending her career with several school records broken, which alone is amazing. She is an outstanding student-athlete that will definitely be hard to replace.” She helped to rewrite the Sage softball record book during her outstanding career. She is the program’s career stolen base leader with 65, while also leading the Gators with her 166 runs scored. She also became the all-time career hit leader this Kristen Beikirch past spring and finishes with 221 hits. She played in a program-best 158 games with 158 starts. She ranks first at Sage in most at-bats (534) as well as total bases (327), while standing No. 2 in doubles (37), No. 4 in triples (9), No. 2 in home runs (17), and No. 3 in RBI’s (85). She owns a .414 career batting average as

well in her time as a Gator with a .612 career slugging percentage. She was honored in the fall of 2014 as the 2013-2014 ECAC Division III Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Sage softball player honored with the award. A biology and pre-medicine major at Sage, she graduated on May 16 with summa cum laude honors after attaining a 3.95 grade point average. A deans’ list student every semester, she is a four-time Skyline Conference ScholarAthlete and was a Kellas Scholar at Sage. She majored in biology at Sage with minors in chemistry, psychology, and Spanish, and earned an Honors Degree. She was also named to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the TriBeta Honor Society, the Psi Chi Honor Society, and the Athenian Honor Society for academic achievement at Russell Sage College. She also earned the McMorran Biology Award at graduation. She will be attending Albany Medical College in the fall to obtain a medical degree with intentions to go into pediatrics, potentially primary care pediatrics.

Hilton Superintendent of Schools David Dimbleby has announced his plan to retire from the district on December 31, 2015. Dimbleby was appointed superintendent on July 1, 2005 and has spent more than 30 years working in the district. “As the superintendent of Hilton, I have had the privilege and good fortune to work with a progressive and supportive Board of Education, a high quality, studentcentered administrative team, and a dedicated, collaborative group of teachers and staff who place the interests of students above their own,” said Dimbleby. “My experiences in this district for the past 30 years as a teacher and administrator have been exceptional.” “During Dave’s tenure as superintendent, the Hilton community has become a destination district for many families,” said School Board President Daniel Wellington. “Now Dave has decided to retire and begin the next phase of his life journey. While we are sad, and will surely miss him, we are also excited and happy for Dave and his family. From all of us in the Hilton School District community, we wish him all the David Dimbleby best and thank him for creating the environment that defines ‘The Hilton Way.’” Wellington also recognized Dimbleby for his leadership in achieving district goals including: becoming the first school district in New York State in which all students participate in the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB), maintaining excellent financial responsibility to the community by having the lowest cost per pupil of any district in Monroe County and being nominated by district employees as a Rochester Top Workplace the past two years. Prior to becoming superintendent, Dimbleby served as principal of Hilton High School (1999-2005), principal of Quest Elementary School and West Avenue Primary
