Clockwise from top left: Nick Pifer goes down to get that ball. Matt Salonan-Roperti is congratulated by his Dad. Hadley Vink gets slapped-five from Coach Darren Zyra as “Buddy” follows in. Record number of players take the field on Westside’s Opening Day Challenger Baseball is a division of Little League Baseball that brings together boys and girls ages 5 to 18 who are physically and/or mentally challenged. The games are structured to support the success of all players. Traditional rules are modified and the focus is always on having fun while learning the game of baseball. No score is kept, each player bats every inning, and everyone plays the entire game. Each player is assigned “buddies” who work to ensure safety and success. The Brockport Bisons Baseball teams have volunteered their time to assist as “buddies.” The enthusiasm and spirit that the Westside Challenger Baseball player brings to the game is very infectious to “buddies” and fans alike. A record crowd attended Opening Day, supporting every hit and run by the Challenger Baseball players. The players come from Brockport, Hamlin, Sweden,
The “Kids of Summer,” with a record number of 54 players, started season number five for Westside Challenger Baseball Saturday, May 30 Clarkson, Holley, Spencerport, Churchville, Greece, Kendall, Bergen, Medina, and Chili. Games are played at Nietopski Field at Sweden Town Park, through July 18 at 9:30 a.m. with exception of Saturday, June 20 when the Westside Challenger Baseball players will travel to Frontier Field and participate in the 23rd Annual Challenger Baseball World Series. There is no game scheduled for Saturday, July 4. After each game, all players, buddies and family members are treated to refreshments and drinks.
There is no cost for any player to participate in Westside Challenger Baseball and the program is completely financed by donations from Reliant Community Credit Union, Rochester Press-Radio Club, Brockport WalMart, Brockport Rotary Club, Brockport Lions Club, Brockport Kiwanis Club, Kendall Lions Club, Rochester Police Locust Club, Brockport Five Star Bank, Learning Disabilities Associations, USA Ultimate Sports and Apparel, Sweden Community Foundation, UR Strong West, Dominos Pizza, Brockport Police Stetson Club, Ferris-Goodridge Auxiliary, Baxter Health Care and many individuals. Brockport Ambulance Corps Past Chief Jim Toole, BAC President David Rice and Chief Cody Dean. Provided photo.
Brockport Corps named EMS Agency of the Year The Brockport Volunteer Ambulance Corps was honored recently by the Monroe-Livingston Regional EMS Council with its EMS Agency of the Year Award for 2014. Brockport Ambulance President David Rice says this is the first time in the Corps’ 53 year history that it received the honor. “We are very pleased and humbled to receive this most important award,” Rice tells the Suburban News/The Herald. “It embodies all of the hard work and dedication of every Corps member over the last five years as we separated from the village and rededicated ourselves as an independent, not-for-profit community-based ambulance service.” The award is presented to an ambulance agency which strives for consistency in EMS excellence and exhibits exemplary performance when providing or supporting prehospital emergency care, Rice says. Brockport Ambulance will now be considered for the New York State EMS Agency of the Year Award by the State Awards Committee of the NYS EMS Council. The award was presented May 17 at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester during a picnic in conjunction with the kick-off of EMS Week. Rice says Rachel Barnhart of WROC-TV made the presentation and the award was accepted on behalf of the Corps by Chief Cody Dean, who was joined at the picnic by past Chief Jim Toole, Rice and Corps members Megan Murray and David and Nicholynn Harrel. The focus of the Brockport Ambulance Corps remains providing quality and timely EMS to the residents of the greater Brockport community. The Ambulance Corps additionally provides support services such as blood pressure screenings and CPR training, which are often offered in conjunction with The Center at Brockport (formerly the Sweden Senior Center), Rice explains. “2014 was by all accounts one of the finest years the Corps has had in many years,” he notes. “Call coverage continues to improve from prior years, and we covered over 90 percent of our calls during the last half of 2014. Volunteer involvement remains stable, although we are always looking for individuals who want to help us protect our community.” Regarding the Towns of Sweden and Clarkson, Rice says Brockport Ambulance continues to update the towns on the Corps’ progress and continued desire to contract with them as their primary provider of EMS. “We will be circulating petitions asking town residents to sign and show their support for a change in the town’s primary ambulance provider,” Rice adds. “We would be grateful if they could take a minute and complete that, or individually contact town officials to voice their desire for a change.”
Play an Instrument? The Brockport Area Communiuty Concert Band is recruiting for July 4 Concert All interested players of concert band instruments, ages 5th grade and up, are invited to be a part of the Brockport Area Community Concert Band for a performance at the Morgan Manning House on July 4 at 11 a.m. The selections include a variety of patriotic music, movie and show themes, popular tunes and light classics. Rehearsals for this group will be Wednesday, July 1 and Thursday, July 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Brockport High School Band room. Anyone with experience on a concert instrument is invited to participate. “We are hoping to have a large number of performers from our Brockport area as part of the homespun festivities at the Morgan Manning House on the 4th, says Director Shawn Halquist. “It is a unique event and the band adds to the atmosphere and excitement. It will be a thrill to have students, parents, grandparents and visitors making music together that morning.” Some “loaner” instruments are available for the performance. To volunteer or for more information, contact Shawn Halquist at shawn.halquist@bcs1.org. Provided information

Kendall EMT lends a hand on flight to Dubai by Kristina Gabalski Kendall Fire Department EMT Jim Barrett says a recent experience he had on an international airline flight attests to the skills of all emergency responders, even those from small fire departments and ambulance corps like his own. Barrett helped save the life of a flight attendant on a flight from Washington, D.C. to Dubai by advising the pilot to land four-and-a-half hours from the plane’s destina-

Legal Notice of Public Hearing Town of Sweden NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Town Board of the Town of Sweden will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the Town Hall, 18 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420, for the purpose of reviewing the application from Iroquois Rock Products, Inc. to renew their Excavation Permit in the Town of Sweden. The complete application, maps, and copies of current permits are on file and available for public inspection during normal business hours at the Office of the Town Clerk. tion so the woman could receive vital medical attention. Barrett was traveling in early May on business and says one of the flight attendants was suffering from abdominal distress from the very beginning of the 14-hour flight. “She thought she was fine,” Barrett says, “but she got worse as the flight progressed ... she got sick and started throwing-up.” Barrett had told the flight’s purser that he was an EMT when he boarded the plane - something he says he typically does when he is on long flights. During the flight, the purser came to him for assistance when the flight attendant got to the point of being in so much pain that she was curled up in a ball in the galley. Barrett was able to assist her to a seat where she could recline, allowing him to quickly assess the situation. “I usually carry some of my (EMT) stuff with me,” he says. “It took me ten minutes to see it was appendicitis.” At that point, the purser paged to see if there was an MD on board to help confirm the diagnosis; there ended up being three. Barrett’s diagnosis was confirmed and the plane’s captain contacted medical command on the ground for guidance. With four-and-a-half hours left on the flight, medical command advised that the woman be given two Tylenol® and an injection to ease the nausea and that the plane should continue to its final destination. Those steps were taken, but Barrett says he could tell the situation was becoming urgent.
Low Bridge, High Water recap Low Bridge High Water, Brockport’s signature Erie Canal opening festival, moved to a new weekend this year, coinciding with the college’s graduation, and shortened from previous years’ events. A slide talk at the Morgan Manning on New and Exciting NYS Canal projects by Tom Grasso, and an unveiling of the mural design for an historic themed mural for Sagawa Park by artist Rick Muto kicked off the festival. Friday evening featured the highly successful Big Tent Craft Beer event with nine breweries and three bands. The Stetson Club’s 5K Barge Charge inaugurated Saturday’s events. Saturday’s canal side activities included music by the Golden Eagle String Band, kayak rentals, rowing demonstrations, a pizza tasting competition, and a series of performances on a Canal Corp barge “stage.” Seventy-two Brockport Central School District 4th graders entered the poster contest, vying to have the winning poster that will advertise next year’s festival. Neither the festival nor our fundraising mission to bring rowing to Brockport and to assist Camp Abilities and Camp Good Days would have been possible without the many people and organizations that contributed to the festival’s success.
He spoke to the captain again. “I told him she’s not going to make it to Dubai ... she might still be alive when we land, but infection will have spread and she won’t live long.” At Barrett’s urging, the captain made the decision to land the plane in Ankara, Turkey, where paramedics met the plane. The flight attendant was taken to a nearby hospital where she underwent surgery. Barrett says he made sure a member of the cabin crew traveled with her. The 250 passengers on the flight ended up spending the night in Ankara and flew out the next day. By that time, Barrett says his fellow passengers realized that it was his decision that led to the unexpected landing and delay. “I was waiting for a lynch mob,” he says, “but most people were good about it. Most people understood.” Back at the airport the next day, Barrett saw the flight crew - including the captain - who was, “grinning from ear to ear.” The captain had been told that if the flight attendant had not made it into surgery when she did, her appendix would have burst in another 5 to 10 minutes. Barrett says he felt good that, “all the decisions I made were the right things. The captain told me, ‘I’m so glad I listened to you and overruled medical command.’ ” As the flight headed for Dubai, Barrett says he had an hour’s worth of airline reports/paperwork to fill out regarding the incident. He says it is not unusual for him to help out passengers on long flights who typically are dealing with respiratory issues, nausea, or malaise, but this incident was, “the most serious,” he has ever encountered while flying. The flight attendant is back at home and doing well. “I plan to send her a card,” Barrett said. Sponsors included Bonduelle, Brockport Lions Club, Brockport Merchants Association, Brockport Rotary Club, Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, Greater Brockport Chamber of Commerce, Jimmy Z’s, Oak Orchard Health, ProBrockport, Stetson Club, Sunnking, The Stylus, Walk!Bike!Brockport!, Wegman’s. Our thanks to the restaurants which provided tasting samples at the Big Tent Event and to the four pizzerias - Perri’s, Mark’s, Salvatores, and Pizza Hut - which supplied the entries in Saturday’s popular Pizza Olympics. Special thanks to Jay Nichols and his staff at the Stoneyard for partnering with the Village on the Big Tent Craft Beer event and to Susan Smith who designed the several posters advertising festival events. Finally, none of this would have been possible without the enterprising and hardworking committee that has pulled this festival off for the last three years. Hats off to Bill Andrews, Sri Ram Bakshi, John Bernfield, Jacquie Davis, Richard and Joan Fenton, Alicia Fink, Melissa Kleehammer, Pam Ketchum, Archie Kutz, Jay Nichols, Susan Smith, and Brockport College student intern Sam Tanner. “Take Back” prescription collection June 13 at The Center The Brockport Police Department in association with the Town of Sweden’s “The Center,” will be taking back unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday, June 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs by dropping them off for disposal to “The Center,” 133 State Street, Brockport. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. According to Brockport Police Department personnel, the initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarm-
ingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential safety and health hazards. No appointments are necessary. Waste from pharmacies, veterinary offices and pharmaceutical businesses are not accepted at these pharmaceutical waste drop-offs. Residents can access a full schedule by calling 753-7600 (option #3) or by viewing the county’s online household hazardous waste appointment schedule at http://www. monroecounty.gov/hhw. Longtime Sweden residents Annie Crane, Mary Rich, and Lori Skoog have officially announced their candidacies for Sweden Town Board. Crane is running for Supervisor and Rich and Skoog are seeking seats on the Town Board. Each candidate has strong leadership skills, is responsible, respected, organized, qualified, and is committed to community involvement, according to a press release. Crane is a 32-year resident of Sweden and has worked at the Lift Bridge Book Shop for 25-years. She has been a leader for over 30-members of the Sweden Democratic Committee since 2008. Rich’s degree in social work and current position as a clinical manager taught her to focus on details. She knows how to ask for and get answers. Mary led a citizen group highlighting inadequate oversight of Sweden’s as-
sessment department, according to the press release. Skoog taught in Brockport schools for 23-years and has lived in both the Town of Sweden and the Village of Brockport. Lori knows first-hand how the community can work together to be stronger, according to the press release. Most recently, she worked to keep the Senior Center from closing. The candidates’ focus when elected will be to keep taxes under the tax cap, to provide oversight to the courts and assessor, to create a volunteer ethics board, to match spending for recreation to demographics, to allow 60 Clinton Street to move forward, to hire a grant writer, and to strengthen relationships between the Town, Village, and The College at Brockport. DeFelice, totem pole lift Holley to Section V Title by Warren Kozireski Senior Joe DeFelice knocked in two runs, scored three and struck out the last ten batters of the game in relief as Holley defeated East Rochester 6-2 to win the Class CC Section V baseball title. The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jon Bower led off with a single to left field, stole second and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. DeFelice tripled him home and later scored on an RBI single by Lucas Silvis. ER scored once in the first and once in the third inning to tie the contest 2-2. The Bombers then threatened in the fourth with runners at second and third with one out, but Hawks starting pitcher Dylan Hillabush worked out of trouble inducing a 63 groundout with the infield in and a foul-out to catcher Josh Porter to end the inning. The Hawks took the lead for good in the sixth as DeFelice collected an infield hit - Holley’s first since the first inning - and went to second base on an errant pickoff attempt. Silvis singled him home and later went to second on a
fielder’s choice before Justin Parker had a clutch two-out hit over the second baseman’s head to drive in the run and put the Hawks up 4-2. They plated two more insurance runs in the seventh with a two-out rally started on a fielding error. DeFelice tripled home the run and Silvis followed with his third RBI hit for the 6-2 lead. But they wouldn’t need the insurance as DeFelice came on in relief and struck out ten batters in three innings (one batter reached on a strikeout-wild pitch). “This (the title) was a goal since the beginning and this team has been working hard ever since and it’s exciting,” DeFelice said. “I tried to stay composed (on the mound). We have a little saying ‘never get comfortable’ and that’s what I was trying to do. “Silvis is clutch all the time. He likes those big moments and is always ready for them - that’s the type of guy he is - and he always comes through.” “I wanted Dylan to get us a good start, get some runs and I wanted to bring in my best when it came to crunch time,”
Class CC Coach of the Year Jason Cole said. “That was the best I’ve seen him (DeFelice) throw all year. We developed a curve ball this year and he used it appropriately.” DeFelice was named the regular season and tournament Most Valuable Player. The Coach of the Year honor is Cole’s second. The team posed for a team photo on the Dwyer Stadium field after the win with a totem pole - a pickup from their trip to Myrtle Beach in April. “My first sectional winning team had a piggy bank and they see that in my office and they wanted to win sectionals and found a symbol for this season. They rub it before the game for good luck. “We kept making it to the semifinals and losing out. Our main goal for this group coming back was to push through the end and get to that next step. I’m proud of these guys.” The Hawks season ended in the Class C state qualifier game with a 6-3 loss to Geneseo. Silvis, DeFelice, Porter and Bower all finished their high school athletic careers.
Senior catcher Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) has been named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Softball Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She becomes the college’s first three time Academic All-American, an honor she also earned in 2013 and 2014. Kristen has
been such a consistent, remarkable player for four years. This year, like the others, she was one of the best players in our conference. She is ending her career with several school records broken, which alone is amazing. She is an outstanding student-athlete that will definitely be hard to replace.” She helped to rewrite the Sage softball record book during her outstanding career. She is the program’s career stolen base leader with 65, while also leading the Gators with her 166 runs scored. She also became the all-time career hit leader this Kristen Beikirch past spring and finishes with 221 hits. She played in a program-best 158 games with 158 starts. She owns a .414 career batting average as
well in her time as a Gator with a .612 career slugging percentage. She was honored in the fall of 2014 as the 2013-2014 ECAC Division III Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Sage softball player honored with the award. A biology and pre-medicine major at Sage, she graduated on May 16 with summa cum laude honors after attaining a 3.95 grade point average. A deans’ list student every semester, she is a four-time Skyline Conference ScholarAthlete and was a Kellas Scholar at Sage. She also earned the McMorran Biology Award at graduation. She will be attending Albany Medical College in the fall to obtain a medical degree with intentions to go into pediatrics, potentially primary care pediatrics.
