She typically covers motorcycle racing across America - specifically the MotoAmerica road racing series. “Working in motorsports for the last three years inspired me to learn to ride a motorcycle and I enjoy doing that in my spare time as well as snowboarding, hot yoga and dancing,” Hannah says. She has danced for the Rochester Rhinos and Rochester Lancers soccer teams. She also worked at Disney World in Orlando as a character performer. “There, I worked closely with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to create lasting connections and happy memories for families of terminally ill children.” The Miss USA Competition airs live on FOX, Sunday, May 14 at 7 p.m. from the Mandalay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
by Kristina Gabalski Miss USA 2017 will be crowned in Las Vegas on May 14, and Spencerport’s Hannah Lopa - crowned Miss New York in January - will be there competing. In fact, Hannah has been in Las Vegas this past week preparing for and participating in the competition which got underway May 4. “It’s a nearly two-week competition,” she explains, “I’m most looking forward to building lasting connections with other contestants as we embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey. Only one woman can win so it’s important to me to make friends and soak up every moment while I can.” Hannah’s journey to Miss New York and Miss USA has been one of persistence. She competed for the Miss New York title seven times in nine years before winning the title in 2017. “I was elated to finally bring the title of Miss New York USA back to Rochester,” she says. “I feel that all of my years competing, combined with the personal growth and learning in between, have prepared me very well for this roll.” It has been a busy four months for Hannah, who says she is very involved in a number of causes and organizations including the USO. Her experiences with the USO have been an honor and a privilege, she says, and included the opportunity to travel to Austin for Operation That’s My Dress. “I got to meet most of the other women competing for the title of Miss USA at the event,” she says. “Sharing that experience with them while helping to impact the lives of military families meant so much to me. I will have the opportunity to participate in my fourth USO event during Fleet Week at the end of May and I can’t wait.” Hannah is the daughter of Deborah and Thomas Lopa. “The Rochester community has been incredibly

Provided photo. supportive since I won the title,” she says of her hometown community. “My family has been supportive, win or lose, all my life. It’s great to be able to use the title to bring the Rochester community together. I have taken advantage of this notoriety to team up with the Willow Center for Domestic Violence to raise awareness about domestic violence because of the abusive relationship that I endured.” As Miss New York, Hannah says she has also been involved in local organizations such as Best Buddies of Rochester in addition to the Willow Center. “I am so fortunate to come from such a diverse, tolerant and accepting city like Rochester,” she says. “I had the opportunity to be a guest at the Princess Palooza event at the Museum of Play, leading STEM-based activities to show girls they can be smart and pretty. Any opportunity that I have to be a leader in my community, any opportunity I have to make an impact, no matter how seemingly small, I will take it.” If she is crowned Miss USA, Hannah says it would be a dream come true. “To be Miss USA would mean nearly a decade of blood, sweat and tears paying off for a lifelong dream to come to fruition,” she explains. Hannah would use the national-level title to bring awareness to domestic violence, she says. “As an advocate for victims of domestic violence, I will continue to lead by example and show other women that

Race through history at GCVM Warm up for the running season with a Race Through History - literally - Genesee Country Village & Museum’s inaugural 5K fundraiser on Saturday, May 20. The race begins at 9 a.m. and is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. With a course that winds through springtime woods, open fields and a historic 19th-century village, runners and walkers will be constantly showered with changing vistas. However, while trails are groomed, they are uneven in parts. Participants will receive free admission to the museum for the remainder of the day and are encouraged to dress as a historic character or just in historic costumes. A prize will be awarded for the best costume. Each contestant will also receive a T-shirt and chip-timed race results. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. and participants must be pre-registered to race. Opinion Yanty Marsh in need of help One of the selling points for Plan 2014 for regulating the level of Lake Ontario was that the wider range of water levels it called for would help to “re-establish wetlands.” But what if the plan completely obliterates wetlands while it is in the process of “re-establishing” them? The eastern half of Yanty Marsh, a pristine 90 acre wetland in Hamlin Beach State Park, is being invaded by the lake. The Plan 2014 that is supposed to be helping it to re-establish itself is threatening to do to the wetland just what it is doing to many of the houses on the southern shore of Lake Ontario! In 1998, the western half of Yanty Marsh was in danger of being completely washed away by high lake levels. Two Army Corps engineers predicted that in ten years the lake would completely gobble it up. Public opinion prevailed and in 1999 the western half of the marsh was “hardened” with rock and a few years later the same two Army Corps engineers declared that it was the most successful “habitat protection” project they had ever been a part of. They also said that the other half of the marsh was better suited to survive on its own for a little while but that was 17 years ago. The eastern half of Yanty Marsh now needs help but that help is not going to be provided by Plan 2014. Ed Evans Hamlin

The tree and me #18 by Joe Reinschmidt Once again it has been quite a while since you’ve heard from me. My scribe tells me that folks are still interested in my existence and well being. Specifically, they wondered if I and my various components survived the recent wind event on March 8 and 9. Those of you who pass by me on Union Street regularly can see that I’m still standing and a close up inspection revealed I didn’t even lose a branch. Guess I’m still quite tough. So now those readers who haven’t checked on me lately also know that I survived. These were not the strongest winds I experienced in my life but still quite a challenge to an oldie like me. I’ve heard that humans who want to live a long healthy life perform a variety of exercises to achieve that. One that is emphasized is “core strengthening.� Well as the picture accompanying this writing clearly shows, my core is kaput, which translates as broken/ shattered and in my case, mostly gone. It is presumably the result of a frightening lightning strike many years ago. I don’t recollect when it occurred and prefer not to. However, the scar is on my west side where I should be strongest to withstand the prevailing winds from that direction.

What has kept me upright is a wonderful characteristic of my species. It is known as “buttressing� and is most evident on my east side. Instead of a relatively straight trunk, as Sycamores mature they develop an ever wider shape starting at their base and then gradually tapering to a normal size. (I believe humans also mature into wider proportions but mostly around the middle of their bodies). Anyway, this buttressing gives us much greater strength to withstand the winds that nature challenges us with. Thankfully my trunk, even with the gaping hole, remains strong enough to stand the test of time and wind. Your calendar says it’s spring, which I sense even without a core or calendar. As always, I’ll be looking forward to sap rising in me and buds appearing on my branches. Thanks for thinking of me and listening to my muttered meanderings.

EPA turns over ownership to Diaz Homes in Holley by Kristina Gabalski The eight empty “Diaz Homes” in the Village of Holley are now owned by the Village of Holley Development Corporation (VHDC). VHDC President Daniel Schiavone and Holley Mayor Brian Sorochty announced Tuesday, May 2, that after more than two years of negotiations with the EPA, the VHDC has secured the eight “Diaz Homes” and is in possession of the deeds to the properties, all of which are clustered in the southwestern quadrant of the village. Schiavone said the VHDC’s attorney is now filing the deeds with Orleans County and finalizing the property transactions. The VHDC was formed in an effort to get the homes on the market and back on the tax rolls. “I am excited to be removing eight zombie homes from the community,” Schiavone said. “I hope that people will see the potential in the homes and make them beautiful again.”
The EPA purchased the homes following the 2002 release of chemicals from the former Diaz Chemical plant on Jackson Street in the village. Holley Mayor Brian Sorochty and Schiavone (who was mayor when the chemical release occurred) both said the 15 years since the incident have been difficult ones for the community. Lawsuits resulted from the chemical release, some families chose to leave, Diaz Chemical eventually declared bankruptcy, and the village lost many good jobs. “The closing of Diaz was a bad part of the village’s history,” Sorochty and Schiavone said, but they noted that May 2 was an, “exciting day” with the homes back in local hands and on their way to new owners. Members of the VHDC plan to meet Monday, May 8 to decide the best way to sell the homes. “We may go with a local realtor,” Schiavone said, but other options include auctioning off the properties. Girl Scouts of WNY announces local resident as 2017 Gold Award Recipient Girl Scouts of Western New York is proud to announce Hilton Girl Scout Ashley Blackburn as a 2017 Gold Award recipient. Blackburn’s project was to collect donations for the Alternatives for Battered Women Shelter, recently renamed the Willow Center in Rochester. Blackburn collected donations using drop boxes throughout the community as well as direct donations from community members. She also distributed flyers and pamphlets, and held an educational seminar for teens at her church to talk about the warning signs of domestic abuse and violence. Blackburn stated, “Domestic abuse is a major problem, not just throughout the United States, but the entire world. It’s something that many people sadly experience. Working with the Willow Center does not stop the domestic abuse that occurs around the world, but it takes a stance against the abuse that occurs. I’m taking a stance through my project against domestic abuse.” Donations included clothing for adults and children, personal and feminine hygiene products, and items for babies and children. Blackburn found that working on her Gold Award project taught organization and people skills, as well as time management. She will receive her Gold Award at the Gold Award Ceremony on Saturday, June 3, at the Grapevine restaurant in Depew, New York. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts and is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” A Girl Scout’s project should be something
that a girl can be passionate about - in thought, deed and action that encompasses organizational, leadership, and networking skills. The project should also fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be on-going or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities. The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. These young women are courageous leaders and visionary change makers. The Gold Award requires a Girl Scout to identify an issue and investigate it to understand what can be done to address the problem. The girl then forms a team to act as a support system, including a project advisor close to the issue who is not a troop leader or family member, while she leads the project. The Girl Scout creates a plan to ensure they know what steps they must tackle while working on the project then submits a proposal for her project to her local Girl Scout council. After acceptance, the girl begins to work through the steps of their plan utilizing the assistance of her support team where necessary. Schiavone had worked to get a better deal for the village, as it was hoped proceeds from the sale of the homes would help fund additional projects for the VHDC. “We may be able to accrue some funds to keep (the VHDC) alive and operating,” Schiavone said. He explained that people who purchase the homes will have to have lead clean-up completed by an EPA certified contractor. As part of the agreement, the EPA insisted that the lead abatement be done for the properties to be released. The homes have been cleared of any chemical contamination, Schiavone said.
Tests completed by the EPA, “reveal there is nothing,” in the homes beyond the lead issues. Those who purchase the properties will be provided with all EPA reports, Mayor Sorochty and Schiavone said. The former Diaz plant has been demolished, Mayor Sorochty said. “Onsite soil remediation will now begin.” The village is seeking a BOA (Brownfield Opportunity Area) Step 2 Program Grant as part of its effort to re-develop the Diaz site. Mayor Sorochty said the village’s BOA Step 1 Program Grant pre-nomination study and the village’s comprehensive plan recommended the formation of the VHDC as a way to address the problem of the former “Diaz Homes.”
Spencerport adopts budget proposal under tax levy limit During its meeting on April 18, the Spencerport School Board of Education adopted a 2017-18 budget proposal, which totals $79 million and projects a 1.49 percent tax rate increase. The expenditure plan, which will be presented to voters on Tuesday, May 16, includes a: •projected tax rate* of $24.45 per $1,000 of assessed home value. *The Board of Education sets the actual tax rate during the summer. •tax levy of $36.3 million, an increase of 1.98 percent, which is less than the 2.05
percent maximum allowable tax levy with exclusions. Four candidates are running for three open seats on the Board of Education. The three-year terms will begin on July 1, 2017, and end on June 30, 2020. The Spencerport Central School District hosted this year’s Operation Safe Stop on Thursday, April 27 at Cosgrove Middle School. The event, held in partnership with New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) and Rochester Area Transportation Supervisors Association (RATSA), raised awareness of the dangers of motorists passing a stopped school bus. Spring turkey hunting by T.R. Hendrick By the time this weekly hits your delivery tube, the New York spring turkey season will be in full swing and hopefully you have connected on a nice long beard gobbler. If you haven’t scored yet and need a place to hunt, here is some good info from the D.E.C. that breaks down the past ten years’ spring turkey harvest numbers by county: www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30420. html. This will give you a general idea on where the highest density of the turkey hangout in the state. The D.E.C. website will also show you thousands of acres allowing public hunting opportunities in those counties. The snag there is there are just too many hunters on most tracts of state land and unlike deer hunting, turkey hunters cannot share the same wood block with other hunters. You never want different hunting parties calling to the same turkey or somebody is going to get upset, not to mention it can be extremely dangerous. I believe you are better off getting permission to hunt on private land, however that’s easier said than done. If you are willing to knock on enough doors and are courteous, you will eventually get the go ahead. To find out who owns the property you want to hunt, download the smart phone app, ONX Hunt Maps. borders, but it will also tell you who owns that block of land and gives the property owner’s address, all on aerial mapping: www.huntinggpsmaps.com. As for some tips on how you can score on a New York gobbler, I contacted veteran turkey hunter John Maher of Hamlin. John has been the winner of countless turkey wars and has been very successful is several states. Maher says it doesn’t matter where you hunt in the country, the one thing all male wild turkeys have in common is that springtime urge to gobble from their roost at the first glimmer of light in the morning. When you want to find out where the gobblers are in your area, you need to get yourself to a good listening location and be there at the very first twinkle of dawn. John emphasizes at it must be the very first glimmer - not a half hour later. He says most gobblers can’t resist gobbling at least a few times from the limb in predawn. Cold rainy mornings can clam them up, but most times they will still sound off at least a few times. John explains as soon as he hears a gobble, he moves to the sound as quickly as he can, closing ground while the light is low to ghost his approach. Once he’s within 150 yards or so he will set-up with his back against a large tree if possible and more importantly a clear view for at least fifty yards.
He then calls very softly to the gobbler while it is still in the tree. If the bird responds with a gobble, he will not call again until he hears the turkey fly down or he is sure the gobbler is on the ground. John warns that if you call too much, the gobbler may hang up on the limb expecting the hen to come to him. Maher emphasizes that you must play hard to get until you know he is on the dirt. As soon as you are sure of this, you can turn the heat up on your calling. If the gobbler has hens with him, all bets are off. All you can hope for then is to talk the hens into coming over for a chat and he will go where they go. Unfortunately, in most cases the hens will instead take him away. John then suggests to back out of the spot and return later in the morning. In most cases, the gobbler will still be in the area and if you are lucky those hens will have left him and he wants a new girlfriend. If he still doesn’t show, don’t go trampling all over the area calling; again, back out. Usually a turkey will roost in the same general area that night and for the remainder of the spring if he doesn’t get pressured too badly by hunters or all his hens leave him. Return whenever time permits and give him another try. One of those times his hens will be off on their nests and he will come looking to fall in love then you can bring the hammer down on him and bam! Your Thanksgiving meal is covered. Lastly, I must mention safety in the
turkey woods. Every spring somebody gets shot hunting turkeys. Please know your target and don’t shoot at sounds or movement. See a beard before you even click off your safety. Now get off the couch and get out there. The spring turkey woods is a fantastic place to spend a morning.

Board managing outflows in response to extreme wet weather, high water levels Exceptionally wet weather in April has resulted in rapidly rising water levels throughout the Lake Ontario - St. Lawrence River system. Precipitation was well-above average across the Lake Ontario - St. Lawrence River basin last month, with some areas receiving more than twice their normal April amounts. As a result, according to provisional data, last month will rank as one of the top three wettest April’s on record (since 1900) in terms of total amount of water flowing into Lake Ontario, as the net effects of precipitation and runoff combined with relatively high inflows entering Lake Ontario from Lake Erie. The wet conditions caused Lake Ontario to rise 44 centimeters (17.3 inches) last month. This represents the third largest increase recorded for the month of April since 1918, just 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) less than the record rise of 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) set in 2014. At the end of April, Lake Ontario’s lake-wide average water level was 75.52 meters (247.77 feet). This is the sixth highest Lake Ontario level recorded at this time of year since 1918, and the highest since 1993. The water level of Lake Ontario is
now at (or above) the International Joint Commission’s upper trigger level that applies at this time of year. Therefore, the Board is now operating under what the IJC defines as criterion H14, which directs the Board to set releases to provide all possible relief to riparians living along the shorelines of the entire Lake Ontario - St. Lawrence River system, balancing water levels upstream and downstream to minimize flood and erosion impacts to the extent possible. Nonetheless, the Board recognizes that flooding and erosion are occurring both on Lake Ontario and downstream in the St. Lawrence River system. The exceptionally wet conditions in April resulted in record high flows from the Ottawa River, which discharges into the St. Lawrence River just upstream of Montreal at Lake St. Louis. Levels there have also risen dramatically this spring, and have reached levels not seen since 1993. As a result, the Board is continuing to balance the high levels both upstream and downstream using the guidance provided by Plan 2014, which specifies that when Lake Ontario rises to 75.50 meters (247.7 feet) that its outflows be increased such

that levels at Lake St. Louis are increased and maintained at 22.40 meters (73.5 feet), which the Board recognizes is above a flood level at this location. Given it appears very likely that Lake Ontario will remain at or above 75.50 meters (247.7 feet) for some time, Lake St. Louis levels will be maintained at 22.40 meters (73.5 feet) for the foreseeable future. Coastal jurisdictions should prepare for the possibility of major coastal flooding as storms frequently occur at this time of year. Though it has been nearly 25 years since water levels have been this high (since 1993), higher levels on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River have occurred several times in the past and will occur again in the future. These high water levels are a result of exceptionally wet conditions and high water supplies, and would have occurred under any regulation plan. Lake and river levels would have been nearly identical this year under the previous regulation plan. Since the Board is now operating
under criterion H14, outflows from Lake Ontario will continue to minimize and balance flooding on Lake Ontario and along the St. Lawrence River in the Montreal area. On May 1, Lake Ontario hit 55 centimeters (21.7 inches) above its long-term average level for this time of year. The level at Lake St. Lawrence, immediately upstream of Moses Saunders Dam in Cornwall, Ontario and Massena, New York, was about 58 centimeter (22.8 inches) below average. Downstream, the St. Lawrence River level at Lake St. Louis is about 74 centimeters (29.1 inches) above average, while at Montreal Harbour the level is 120 centimeters (47.2 inches) above average. The Board, in conjunction with its staff, continues to monitor the system. Spencerport names new school superintendent The Spencerport Board of Education has selected Dan Milgate as the next superintendent of the Spencerport Central School District. He will assume his new role when Michael Crumb retires on June 30. “The Spencerport School District Board of Education engaged in a rigorous search process and gave extensive consideration to all candidates to determine the best fit for the district,” said Board President Gary Bracken. “We remain impressed with all of the candidates who applied, each with exemplary qualifications. The board selected Dan based on his extensive and varied experience, collaborative leadership style and knowledge of the district. We feel his appointment will ensure Spencerport has a leader who understands and puts the needs of our students first.” Bracken added, “The community and staff engagement, interview panels, and tours were much appreciated and proved to be invaluable to our work.” Milgate is currently the assistant superintendent for schools at Spencerport and has served in that position since July 2011. Prior to being named assistant superintendent, he served as the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction for three years, the Canal View Elementary School principal for six years and as a high school assistant principal for three years.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be selected as the next Superintendent of Schools for the Spencerport Central School District,” said Milgate. “I look forward to continuing the pursuit of excellence our students and staff demonstrate every d a y. Gates senior runner Bruce Rychwalski crossing the Finish Line in the 2017 Rochester Heart 5k Run at Frontier Field. Rychwalski, 67, was the Captain of The Bravehearts Team which raised $1,350 for the American Heart Association. Five of the ten runners on his team won medals in their age group in the 5K race: Pam Nudd, Christine Klein, David Kennedy, Tom Dutton and the Captain himself, Bruce Rychwalski. It was Rychwalski’s 236th 5K Run since experiencing a life-threatening Ventricular Tachycardia, being shocked with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), being diagnosed with Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) and having surgery for an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) in April of 2011. His goal is to run in 300 5K races by age 70. Provided photo and information.
Rangers rally late by Warren Kozireski Spencerport overcame a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth inning and scored the winner in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Hilton 3-2 in boys’ baseball at Harold “Chick” Schum Field. The Cadets jumped out to a 1-0 lead as junior David Stirpe singled, stole second, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice by Morgan Kunigan and scored on Ryan Schmitt’s RBI single. Hilton made it 2-0 in their half of the fifth with Stirpe again starting the rally as he reached on an infield single. After stealing second, Kunigan sent him to third with a perfect sacrifice bunt before Schmitt singled in the hole between third and short for his second RBI of the game.
The Rangers rebounded in their half of the fifth as they tied the game with a twoout rally. Leadoff hitter and DH Joe Carroll reached on an infield single and went to third on a double deep to right by Peter Mancuso. After Aidan Eldridge walked to load the bases, Josh Brase knocked in two runs with his single to right field to tie the game 2-2. Both teams had at least one runner in scoring position in the sixth but failed to score and Rangers starting and winning pitcher Jarod Barnard retired the Cadets in order in the top of the seventh. Mancuso led off the bottom of the seventh by drawing a walk and advanced all the way to third when the throw to first on Eldridge’s sacrifice bunt sailed into right field. With Brase at the plate, Mancuso scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Kendall scored eight runs over the first two innings, but none the rest of the way as they hung on for an 8-6 win over Holley in girls’ softball. The Eagles batted around scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. Elizabeth Rath led off with a single and went to third on a Chelsea Wright single. Catcher Kacey Menge stroked a two-RBI double and, after a walk to Madison Rath, both scored on a double by Rebecca Banker and an error. Banker scored the fifth run of the inning on a wild pitch. Holley plated one run in their half of the first as shortstop Brooklyn Bartholomew reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by third baseman Madison Papaj. Kendall increased their lead to 8-1 in the second started again by an Elizabeth Rath single. She stole second and scored on two wild pitches. Madison Rath drove in another run with a triple and later scored
on an RBI groundout by Emily Mattle. Holley chipped away at the seven run deficit. In the second inning, Hannah Biedlingmaier reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on two throwing errors. The Hawks made it 8-3 in the third on back-to-back doubles by Papaj and Anna Brasted. In the home half of the sixth, Papaj reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Brasted drove her in with an RBI groundout to cut the Kendall lead to 8-4. In the seventh, Briana Colucci reached base on an error. Pinch runner Hannah Day stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Bartholomew drove her in with a single down the left field line. After a Papaj bloop single, Brasted drove in Bartholomew with a single for her third RBI of the game to make it 8-6. A sacrifice bunt put the tying run at second, but the Eagles were able to register the third out to end the Hawks comeback hopes and even their record at 2-2.
Bright Raven gymnasts compete in regionals Four Bright Raven Gymnasts competed in the USA Gymnastics Level 7/8 Regional 6 Championships held April 22 and 23 in Springfield, Massachusetts winning several honors. Emily Field, age 15 of Greece competed in the Level 8 Senior B division and placed third on bars. In the Senior B Level 7 competition, 14 year old Naimah Muhammad of Rochester earned three bronze medals placing third on vault, uneven parallel bars and all around.
Ashley Wood, age 10 of Henrietta competed in the Level 7 Child B division and took first place in floor exercise. Madeline Pitts, age 12 of Victor won floor exercise in the Junior C division and placed third on vault. The USAG Region 6 Championships included gymnasts from all of the New England States in addition to New York. Gymnasts qualified to compete in the Regional Championship by earning high all around scores at their individual State Meets. Provided information
Churchville-Chili Sports Booster Club hosts annual Food Truck Rodeo The Churchville-Chili Saints Sports Booster Club will hold its third annual Food Truck Rodeo on Thursday, May 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Churchville-Chili Middle School, located at 139 Fairbanks Road. There is no entry fee and all are welcome. The goal of this community-wide event is to raise money to help all ChurchvilleChili High School sports teams. The event will include approximately 20 food trucks on-site that offer unique menus with something for everyone, and additional vendors such as Ultimate Sports and Apparel, Predisposed Vintage, LuLaRoe and Tupperware. There will be games for children, hosted by the sports teams, and a DJ will play live music.
Last year the event drew nearly 5,000 people. “This is a fun event for foodies and families from across Greater Rochester,” said Stephanie Keller, Saints Sports Booster Club public relations coordinator. “We encourage community members and families to come out and support our ChurchvilleChili High School athletes!” Attendees should enter from Fairbanks Road and bring cash for food trucks, vendors, games and raffles. Robert L. Allis Allis, Robert L., age 73, died April 4, 2017 of cancer, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a member of Brockport High School class of 1961. He graduated Bowling Green State University with a BA in Mathematics and earned his MA in Math from Miami University, Ohio. He was a 3-year Peace Corps volunteer in Kitui, Kenya and taught mathematics at the University of Hawaii for most of the 47 years he lived in Honolulu. He was preceded in death by his parents Bert Allis and Leah Allis Gallup. Survived by brothers Richard (Janet) of Atlanta, Georgia, Jan (Sue) of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and sister Diane (Ted) Wurzburg of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts, many nieces and nephews. He was a lover of the ocean, the mountains and lakes; and was a music connoisseur. He will be greatly missed.

The Women’s Council, a Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce affiliate, announced the recipients of its 18th annual Young Women of Distinction Awards. The scholarship program supports the Women’s Council’s belief that young women with promise today will become tomorrow’s leaders. Cassandra Jones of Gates-Chili High School was one of four 2017 Young Women of Distinction honorees. The four top recipients, one each from the Rochester City School District, Monroe County east, Monroe County west, and the eight regional counties surrounding Monroe, receive a $2,000 scholarship and an opportunity for a paid internship at an area company.
