Brockport held its 18th Arbor Day celebration on the morning of April 28 in South Avenue Park. More than 20 community volunteers, assisted by SUNY Grounds personnel and Brockport’s DPW, planted eight redbuds and two oaks. All the funds came from donations, and all the trees are native species. A bur oak replaced the giant copper beech that graced the lawn there for over 100 years, and a memorial pin oak was planted in a corner of the park. The Village intended to replace the copper beech with another beech, but were advised against doing so due to the invasive beech leaf blight which arrived in Monroe County in 2022. In time, the bur oak will attain a height of 70 to 80 feet and a similar spread of its crown. Friends of SUNY Brockport’s Drake Memorial Library will be hosting “painting with Friends,” a fundraiser in support of library services to students, faculty, and members of the community.

“painting with Friends,” to be facilitated by guest artist Andrea Newman, takes place Sunday, May 21, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the College’s “Joy and Happiness to all the Children of the World” fountain sculpture adjacent to Drake Memorial Library, New Campus Drive. rain location will be the Drake Memorial Library Kiefer room.

Novice and experienced artists will have the opportunity to create their own painting of the fountain with assistance from Newman. No prior painting experience is required; just bring your enthusiasm to learn a new skill and spend an afternoon with others doing the same. registration is $50 general, $40 students, or bundle two registrations for $80. The fountain was created in 1979 by then Soviet artist Zurab Tsereteli and donated to the College. His inspiration for the sculptured fountain happened when two events coincided: the United Nations proclaiming 1979 the “International Year of the Child” and the University hosting that summer’s International Special Olympics Games. Tsereteli, who had recently taught a painting course on the Brockport campus, constructed both the fountain and a statue of prometheus in honor of these events. This donation marked the first gift from the former USSr to the people of the United States. The five pillars of the fountain sculpture represent the five continents that participated in the International Special Olympics Games that year.

Ogden/Spencerport and the Spanish American War

2023 marks the 125th anniversary of the Spanish American War. “A splendid little war.” This partial quote, attributed to John Hay, sums it up. Splendid because the US was victorious without consuming a large number of American lives. Little because it happened in a place about the size of Tennessee, it lasted for only 10 weeks, and today, it’s little remembered.

Nineteen young men from Ogden/Spencerport enlisted to fight in the Spanish American War. Not all left the country to fight. Some died from disease. After the war, most returned home, others moved away. Veterans from other communities settled in Ogden/Spencerport. Our cemeteries hold eighteen Spanish American War Veterans. Each has a story to tell.

SETTING THE STAGE

The end of the 19th century is nostalgically referred to as the Gay Nineties. The robber Barons may have been living the high life, but the rest of America was not. During this time, lynching had reached an all-time high in the Jim Crow south. Northern cities, the new home to immigrants from countless diverse places, were filthy, teeming with poverty and corruption. They had become stuffed to the brim with exploited factory workers.

The 1890s had a bumpy start. The economic growth and expansion of the Gilded Age (1870–1890) had led to an economic crisis and the panic of 1893. The resulting depression lasted until 1896.

Everyday Americans had had enough of political corruption and unchecked industrial monopoly. They stood up and took action. Social and political reform was on the horizon. The time had come for the progressive Era (1896–1917).

The progressives believed they had an obligation to do better because they could do better. They started their war of transformation locally, drawing support from their communities. Their goal was improvement in every aspect of life, including the natural world. Their weapons would be education and a firm belief in science and technology.

Teddy roosevelt is a prime example of an 1890s progressive. The strict Victorian Era was getting pushed aside by the steady march of change.

1890s USE OF NEWSPAPERS – PRIMING THE COUNTRY FOR THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR

News reports of the day were spread by the written word. 1890s newspapers were explicit and sensational, gaspworthy, and voraciously read by everyone. They allowed the entire country to follow along as the first prospectors

reached Seattle to seek instant wealth in the Klondike Gold rush or share in the thrill of reaching the summit of Mount Saint Elias in the Yukon.

Cities like Nashville, which was hosting a Centennial Exposition lit by countless electric lights, or Boston, having completed the first North American underground metro system, could promote their events and accomplishments to attract more visitors.

It was from the newspapers of 1897 we learned that “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” and the report of Mark Twain’s death was “an exaggeration.” The newspaper was a powerful tool with multiple functions, all of which could manipulate feelings, shape public opinion, or shift their focus regardless of the facts. Investigative journalists or “Muckrakers” used the paper to expose the worst mankind had to offer.

It’s all about the money. There was a fierce competition between newspaper tycoons for readers. Supporting staff was known to switch sides. Named after a popular cartoon, “yellow journalism” was born.

WHY CUBA WAS IMPORTANT

Cuba, claimed for Spain by Christopher Columbus in 1492, had been occupied as a Spanish Colony since 1511. Situated on the slave trade route, it was easy for planters, using the sweat and blood of enslaved peoples, to grow sugar, tobacco, rice, and coffee. By the mid 1800s Cubans became dissatisfied with the lack of political representation and high taxes from the distant and corrupt Spanish government. At the same time in the US, because of the surge in northern manufacturing, states in the American South were losing their economic position and political influence. It was proposed that the purchase or, if that failed, seizure of Cuba by the U.S. as a slave state, would improve the South’s status and prevent other powerful countries, such as Britain or France, from acquiring such a valuable asset and deny them a strategic foothold in North America. In 1854, the U.S. tried to purchase Cuba from Spain for “national security” reasons. This plan, when made public, was condemned by abolitionists in both the U.S. and Europe. Cuba remained under Spanish control.

In 1868, Cuba rebelled against Spain to seek their economic and political independence. This war ended ten years later with no clear winner. Spain agreed to amnesty for the rebels and freedom for the slaves. Cubans would have representation in the Spanish parliament. Slavery wasn’t abolished until 1886. Other promised improvements never materialized.

During the ten-year war, American businessmen bought large quantities of land in Cuba to grow sugar. By the 1890s Cuba was exporting 90% of their goods to the U.S. In 1894, Spain raised Cuban taxes and imposed trade restrictions; they could no longer export to the U.S. Again, Cubans had had enough and began a war for independence.

A REVOLUTION OCCURRING JUST 90 MILES SOUTH OF THE UNITED STATES.

By January 1896, rebel forces controlled most of the island. Spain responded with brutality. General Weyler, known as the Butcher, reconcentrated as many Cubans as possible into fortified camps away from the countryside, limiting aid to the rebels. reconcentration ended in 1897. None the less, because of the abysmal camp conditions, approximately 170,000 Cubans died of starvation or disease.

American newspapers sensationalized Cuba’s torment. Sympathetic Americans called for action.

Free community-wide Health Services Day in Hilton May 13

A free, community-wide Health Services Day will be held on Saturday, May 13, from noon to 4 p.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hilton. Reverend Greg Kremer felt it was important to bring in the northwest community mental health, physical health, addiction care, and career services that can be hard for rural residents to access.

This idea came into fruition after Reverend Greg met Josie McClary, Community Engagement Officer for the Monroe County Executive’s Office, at a Health Fair in the city of Rochester. It led to Reverend Greg reflecting on the question: What needs can we meet by holding a Health and Community Services Day in the Hilton area?

Reverend Greg and Josie began to collaborate with nearly a dozen departments from Monroe County and many other individual community organizations to be present at the Northwest Health and Community Services Day.

At this event, free health screenings will be available for diabetes, cancer, blood pressure, vision, and more. Mental and emotional health services will be available for all ages, as well as services for abuse victims and those struggling with addictions. Senior services and programs will also be highlighted. Hilton student receives Young Woman of Distinction Award

Hilton High School senior Sydney Heise received one of four 2023 Young Women of Distinction Awards presented by the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce and its Women’s Council Affiliate at a ceremony on Tuesday, May 2. The scholarship program is presented to high school senior women who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to community service while letting their creativity shine.

In addition to Heise, the other 2023 recipients were Ana Fontan, East Upper High School; Emma McLaughlin, Perry Junior/Senior High School; and Alisha Upal, Pittsford Sutherland High School.

These four recipients, one each from the Rochester City School District, Monroe County east, Monroe County west, and the eight regional counties surrounding Monroe, receive a $2,500 scholarship, while other finalists receive a $250 scholarship.

Persistent precipitation increases

Lake Ontario water levels

Heavy rain in recent days across the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River basin has led to rapid increases in Ottawa River flows and rising Lake Ontario water levels. Lake Ontario levels have been rising at a rate of approximately 0.8 inches per day and reached 247.05 feet on May 2 while levels of the St. Lawrence River at PointeClaire (Montreal) have risen above 72.83 feet. Continued wet weather and runoff from the recent rains may result in flooding of vulnerable areas along the Lake Ontario shoreline as well as downstream along the St. Lawrence River, including Lake St. Louis and Lake St. Pierre.

At this time, the water levels of Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence

River are expected to remain below the record-highs observed in 2017 and 2019.

The International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board is monitoring the situation. The Lake Ontario outflow into the St. Lawrence River continues to be adjusted in accordance with the Plan 2014 F limit. Ontario Power Generation adjusted the gates at the Iroquois Dam on May 2 to prevent extremely high levels on Lake St. Lawrence, the portion of the St. Lawrence River upstream from the Moses-Saunders dam to Iroquois, Ontario. This action does not change the outflow from Lake Ontario or water levels elsewhere on the system. Provided information

Master Gardener Spring Gala

Rain or shine, the Genesee County Master Gardeners will be hosting their annual Spring Garden Gala on Saturday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County, 420 East Main Street in Batavia.

This annual plant sale features a variety of perennials, many of which are from the gardens of Master Gardeners. There will also be a selection of house plants. The plant sale starts promptly at 10 a.m.; no early birds please.

Sierra Krystan

Sierra is a driven student who has faced many challenges as she struggled with her academics. Despite the challenges, she has made a tremendous amount of progress and was able to be declassified from her Individualized Education Plan.

School Counselor and nominator Kelly Kostek said, “Sierra worked really hard, made much growth and was able to be successful in all of her academics.” Sierra is a pleasure to work with.

Sierra has worked very hard the last three years of high school and has come very far. She also is succeeding in her WeMoCo Cosmetology program. Sierra is dedicated and hardworking and she has a bright future.

Sierra’s parents are Kristin Belardino and Thomas Krystan.

Lydiamattia

Lydia is a role model for learning how to deal with a life altering diagnosis, she was diagnosed at the age of 10 with Epilepsy. Due to the pandemic, she spent most of her 9th and 10th grade years being homeschooled as she was in a wheelchair as a result of the disease. Finally, after many years of uncontrolled seizures she was diagnosed with M.E.A.K. a rare genetic, progressive myoclonic epilepsy.

Lydia, through it all, has still managed to stay positive despite her diagnosis. She has been a champion in promoting Epilepsy awareness and education, recently petitioning Spencerport High School to add seizure safety to the health unit. She also loves promoting “wear purple day” for Epilepsy awareness. Lydia spends many hours volunteering at local nursing homes and for community services projects. She stays involved with her church and extracurricular activities.

Even with her daily physical struggles, Lydia continues to persevere and move towards her goals. Lydia is in the National Honor Society as well as on Honor Roll. Her plan is to pursue a Human Services Certificate at MCC and work with the elderly.

Nominator Pat Brown and family said, “Lydia is an outstanding young woman with many positive attributes. She is kind, considerate, patient, cooperative and, above all, courageous. This attitude has served Lydia well to succeed in school and continue to smile through while living with this progressive disease.”

Lydia’s parents are Jessica and Tony Mattia.

Induction Ceremony is Wednesday, May 10, at 5:30 p.m., in the Community Meeting Room of the Ogden Town Hall.

Rochester WWII pilot accounted for

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced that U.S. Army Air Forces 1st Lt. John B. Thomas, 23, of Rochester, killed during World War II, was accounted for September 30, 2022.

In the summer of 1943, Thomas was assigned to the 345th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air Force. On August 1, the B-24 Liberator bomber Thomas was piloting was hit by enemy antiaircraft fire and crashed during Operation TIDAL WAVE, the largest bombing mission against the oil fields and refineries at Ploiesti, north of Bucharest, Romania. His remains were not identified following the war. The remains that could not be identified were buried as Unknowns in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan, Ploiesti, Prahova, Romania.

Following the war, the American Graves Registration Command (AGRC), the organization that searched for and recovered fallen American personnel, disinterred all American remains from the Bolovan

Cemetery for identification. The AGRC was unable to identify more than 80 unknowns from Bolovan Cemetery, and those remains were permanently interred at Ardennes American Cemetery and Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, both in Belgium.

In 2017, DPAA began exhuming unknowns believed to be associated with unaccounted-for airmen from Operation TIDAL WAVE losses. These remains were sent to the DPAA Laboratory at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, for examination and identification.

To identify Thomas’ remains, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial evidence. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y chromosome DNA (Y-STR) analysis.

Thomas’ name is recorded on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery, an American Battle Monuments Commission site in Impruneta, Italy, along with others still missing from WWII. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for.

Thomas will be buried in North Rose, New York, on May 20, 2023.

Students from Spain seek host families and lifelong memories

This summer, students from Spain will be traveling to the U.S. to experience authentic American life. Through the organization Friendships Abroad (formerly Global Friendships), a chaperone and 15 students – ranging from 13 to 17 years old will be staying with host families around Rochester’s west side.

“We want families to be themselves because that’s the experience students want to have the most: real, American families doing what they do,” explained local coordinator, Becky Smith. Becky is assisting this specific group in finding host families across Chili, Gates, Brockport, Spencerport and Hilton for the summer.

“Prior to COVID, I saw a posting for an immediate need for a host family for two cousins from France, Albane and Aurelia, whose placement fell through. My husband and I thought it would be a fun experience, so we volunteered,” explained Smith, who is in her second year as a coordinator with the organization. “I enjoyed it so much, I signed up to be a local coordinator!”

Students will be visiting from June 29 to July 27. If families are unable to host a student for the full month, they can split the visit with another family and each host for two weeks. Host families are responsible for providing students with three meals a day, a place to sleep – whether their own room or a shared room with a same sex “sibling” – and some transportation. Students come with spending money so they can participate in various activities with their host family.

“Taking vacations or trips out of town are great for students to tag along with their hosts, so they can be exposed to more places and experiences,” said Smith.

She also helps plan activities for the students during their time in the U.S., starting with a 24-hour visit to New York City when they first arrive at JFK airport. Throughout the summer, students will get to take a trip to Niagara Falls,

•Gillette, Audrie C., of Greece, died April 27, 2023 at age 82. She was predeceased by her parents, Raymond and Iva Unterborn. She is survived by her children, Debbie Gillette and Darren (Louise) Gillette; her grandchildren, Holly Gillette, Jordan Gillette, Ashley Tawaf, Michael Gillette, Brittney Terhaar, Benjamin Haller, Natalie Haller, Kelly Langdon, and Justin Langdon; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Nancy Worden; and her former husband of many years, John Gillette. Audrie was the owner of her own floral shop. She enjoyed traveling, particularly going on cruises. She loved flowers, photography, and camping.

Her Funeral Service was held May 3 at the Thomas E. Burger Funeral Home, Inc., Hilton. Those wishing can make donations in memory of Audrie to the Craig Goodrich Animal Shelter, 80 Railroad Avenue, Hamlin, NY 14464.

•Prouty, Arthur Cleaves, of Spring Arbor, Michigan, died March 17, 2023, at Mission Point in Jackson, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Martha “Jenelle” Prouty; two sons, Nathan (Kathy) Prouty of Virginia and Philip (Marge) Prouty of North Chili; four step-sons, Randy (Diana) Mason of Indiana, Don Mason of Spring Arbor, MI, Terry (Robbie) Mason of Israel and Gary (Jill) Mason of Spring Arbor, MI; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-grandchild; one brother, Richard (Linda) Prouty of New York; one sister, Edith Duncan of Ohio and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Clyde and Laura Prouty; his first wife, Edna (Hutt) Prouty and one brother, Paul Prouty. Mr. Prouty was a member of Pearce Memorial Church in North Chili, and he was an Ordained Minister, having pastored Free Methodist churches in New York State. He also served as the maintenance and grounds superintendent at Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili.

A Service of Worship and Celebration of his Life was held Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili. Private interment, North Chili Rural Cemetery. Contributions in his memory can be made to the scholarship assistance fund of Northeastern Theological Seminary on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College, 2265 Westside Drive, Rochester, NY 14624. “I also try to take students to a local high school. They are amazed at the difference in what our schools are like versus their schools in Spain,” she said.

The summer visit is a wonderful opportunity for students and host families, with lifelong impact.

“This is a life changing experience for the students coming to the U.S. and is often a dream they’ve had since being a young child,” explained Smith. “However, it is equally as amazing of an experience for the host family to form a unique bond with someone they would have never crossed paths with otherwise. I look at it as a small way we can literally change the world. You never know what these students will take home with them and share with others – and it could be a part of your life that you shared with them!”

Smith and her family know this from personal experience. In addition to the two cousins from France, they hosted a young lady from Spain last year named Miriam.

“My children really enjoyed hearing about their cultures and sharing our culture with them. Hearing and learning the language is really cool too,” explained Smith. “Seeing things from another perspective is humbling because we don’t often think about some things as being different because we are so used to them. The relationships can last a lifetime as well. We still speak with our past students. I even know host families who have traveled to Spain and visited former students and their families years later.

•Simmonds, Jack L., died May 1, 2023 at age 69. Jack is predeceased by his parents, Pauline and Adrian Simmonds; his brother, Adrian Simmonds; and several loving aunts and uncles. He is survived by his children, Joshua Simmonds and Lindsey Simmonds; his sister-in-law, Linda Simmonds; and many friends, extended family and honorary “kids” who looked at him as a best friend, mentor and second father. Jack worked for years in software test engineering, but his true love was always music, specifically classic rock, and most notably The Beatles. He played in several bands, including a band with his brother and father, and also worked as a popular radio DJ at WSAY 1370am in his 20’s. Jack spent his final years semi-retired and driving a school bus for the Hilton Central School District. He expressed regularly that this was the first job he’d held since radio that felt so rewarding. Jack treasured his home of 30 years in Hilton, “The Ponderosa.”

Literacy foundation seeks applicants for Summer Youth Ambassador Program

The World Literacy Foundation (WLF) is looking for young people in New York who aspire to be an advocate and changemaker for the issue of illiteracy over the summer. It’s estimated 65% of children from underserved communities in New York struggle to read and write.

WLF has opened its application for the organization’s Summer 2023 Youth Ambassador Program. The Youth Ambassador Program is a four-month youth leadership development program that provides participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective advocates for literacy in their communities and around the world.

Young people between the ages of 16 and 30 are eligible to apply. Applications must be submitted online through the WLF’s online portal before May 26, 2023. The Summer 2023 Youth Ambassador Program begins June 6, 2023. The Program is free of charge. Interested individuals can access the online application at worldliteracyfoundation.org/ ambassador-program.

Ali Hawkins, WLF spokesperson in New York, believes that: “The Youth Ambassador Program is so powerful for and impactful on participants because it combines learning and action and connects the local to the global. Hilton baseball again among the best in Section V

There is an old sports adage that a team and its players have to learn how to win through experiences, whether it be in the regular season or playoffs. That may be less applicable in high school sports with the changing nature of the roster each year. Still, Hilton hopes this year is the year they take that next step to a Section V championship.

The Cadets lost in the 2021 Class AA final and dropped a one-run affair to Fairport in the quarterfinals last year despite being the top seed.

This year they are tied with Webster-Schroeder for the top spot in Class AA with a 10-2 record while getting contributions from many different players, both on the mound and at the plate.

They started the season with a loss on a three-game trip to Myrtle Beach, but then ran off a seven-game winning streak. As of this writing, they were 10-1 since that opening loss, and their pitching staff was sporting a 21-inning shutout streak.

“The guys have been hitting their spots, I just got to put the fingers down, and the defense has been doing their job, and we’ve been scoring just enough to get by,” senior catcher Joey Sanna said.

In a 1-0 victory over two-time Class A defending champion Webster-Thomas, it was Jeffery Broadnax who slammed an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left field for a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to support six innings of two-hit

“Everyone one through nine, even guys on the bench, everyone is ready to go from the start,” Sanna said.

The Cadets are led offensively by Broadnax, senior third baseman Michael Heise and Steven Kraus, along with shortstop Brady Gerig at the top of the order getting on base.

On the mound, James Capellupo leads the team in wins, followed by Kraus, Lenhard, and Whelehan.

Their eight seniors bring the experience to help them overcome the inevitable dips in a season, such as a one-run loss to Greece Athena in mid-April.

“Last year, we had a great team and won the league, so everyone is gunning for us this year,” senior third baseman Michael Heise said. “It (the Athena loss) wasn’t really panic mode, but more of a wake-up and be ready to play every day.”

“I think it was kind of a wake-up for all of us that anyone can beat us; Athena is a great team and scrappy, but anyone can beat us on any given day if we don’t show up,” Sanna said.

Now to get over the hump and bring back the third Section V title in program history (1997, 2008).

“I really like these guys; great group that plays for each other, and they worked their tail off in the offseason and weight room and they compete,” head coach Kevin Whelehan said.

A qualified voter is one who is: (1) a citizen of the United States of America, (2) eighteen years of age or older, and (3) a resident within the School District for a period of thirty (30) days next preceding the annual vote and election, and who is not otherwise prohibited from voting under Election Law Section 5-106. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a public hearing will be held in the Gates Chili Central School District Professional Learning Center, Door #40, 1 Spartan Way, Rochester, NY 14624 on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 6:00 p.m., prevailing time, for a presentation of the proposed budget.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual Meeting of the qualified voters of the Gates Chili Central School District, Monroe County, Gates, New York, will be held in the High School, 1 Spartan Way in said District on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. prevailing time. At the said time and place, polls will be open for voting by voting machine upon the following propositions and item:

1. To adopt the annual budget of the School District for the fiscal year 2023-2024 and to authorize the requisite portion thereof to be raised by taxation on the taxable property of the District.

2. Resolved that the Board of Education of the Gates Chili Central School District is hereby authorized to undertake the acquisition of school buses, at an estimated maximum aggregate cost of $2,295,330, before trade-in value, and an estimated net aggregate cost of $1,929,330 after such trade-in value, potential rebates, and/ or incentives, and that such costs, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax to be collected in annual installments; and, in anticipation of such tax, debt obligations of the school district as may be necessary not to exceed $1,929,330 shall be issued, or the School District may enter into an installment purchase contract if the board of education determines that it is in the best interest of the School District to finance the purchase in that method.

3. Resolved that the Board of Education of the Gates Chili Central School District is hereby authorized to establish a Capital Reserve Fund pursuant to Section 3651 of the Education Law (to be known as the “2023 Capital Reserve Fund”), with the purpose of such fund being to finance reconstruction and improvement of school buildings and facilities, and the acquisition of furnishings, equipment, machinery or apparatus; such capital costs being of a type that would be eligible for financing under the local finance law, and costs incidental thereto, the ultimate amount of such fund to be $15,000,000, plus earnings thereon, the probable term of such fund to be 10 years, but such fund shall continue in existence until liquidated in accordance with the Education Law or until the funds are exhausted, and the sources from which the funds shall be obtained for such Reserve are (i) amounts from budgetary appropriations from time to time, and (ii) unappropriated fund balance made available by the Board of Education from time to time, and (iii) New York State Aid received and made available by the Board of Education from time to time, all as permitted by law.

4. Resolved that the Board of Education of the Gates Chili Central School District, pursuant to Education law Section 1804, is hereby authorized to have a student who is a senior and who has attended high school within the District for at least two (2) years serve as an ex officio student member of the Board of Education; such ex officio student member being entitled to sit with Board of Education members at all public meetings of the Board of Education and participate in all Board of Education hearings and meetings, but not vote, attend executive session, and/or be entitled to receive compensation of any form for participating at Board of Education meetings; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the selection of such ex officio student member of the Board of Education shall be in accordance with Board of Education Policy Number 1340.

Corridor invites New Yorkers to take part in the Canalway Challenge in 2023. The free program welcomes people of all ages and abilities to set a personal mileage goal and then walk, run, cycle, or paddle along the NYS Canal System to achieve it and receive recognition and rewards.

Participants can choose from a range of mileage options, including 15 miles, 90 miles, 180 miles, and 360 miles. A 1st Mile Challenge is open to people with mobility challenges.

“The canal’s history along with the impressive variety of communities and sites to discover along it make this challenge unique. If you need a little motivation or direction to get out and get active this summer or if you’re ready for a fun fitness adventure, the Canalway Challenge is for you,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

Now in its fifth year, Canalway Challenge participants from 28 U.S. states and four countries have logged nearly one million miles along New

York’s canals and Canalway Trail to date.

New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “As another canal season kicks-off, we are delighted to continue our support of the Canalway Challenge as this program is designed to encourage exploration and recreation, offering fun-filled experiences for all ages and abilities. We look forward to welcoming visitors, tourists, and adventure-seekers alike as they enjoy the state’s historic Canal System and its adjoining trails.”

Registration is open to individuals, organizations, and teams. People can complete the Challenge in one big trip or many small ones from May 1 through the end of October. Upon completion, participants receive a mileage sticker, magnet and, new for 2023, set of four commemorative postcards.

Budgets reveal values

Recently, Republicans passed a budget, H.R. 2811 the Limit, Save and Grow Act of 2023. Budgets reveal priorities and what we value, so it is worth looking at the budget Congresswoman Claudia Tenney supported.

Denis McDonough, Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, testified to Congress that passage of H.R. 2811 would result in about 30 million fewer outpatient visits and about 6,000 fewer staff to handle benefits claim. (It is worth noting that she also voted against the Pact Act which extends healthcare benefits to veterans exposed to toxic burn pits). Moody’s Analytics reported that passage of H.R. 2811 would result in 780,000 fewer jobs in 2024 and could result in a recession next year. The Congressional Budget Office reported that the legislation would result in about 600,000 American citizens being removed from Health Care insurance.

(Western New York Energy, New York State’s only ethanol plant and Orleans County’s largest tax base is in her district).

None of that mattered to Ms. Tenney. She voted against the interest of veterans, healthcare workers, teachers and the economic interest of her constituents. Instead she voted for and supports the fossil fuel industry and tax breaks for the ultra-rich; those are her values and priorities.

Ogden Parks and Recreation receives award

The Town of Ogden Parks and Recreation Department was recently presented with the Multimedia Award at the New York State Recreation and Parks Society (NYSRPS) Annual Conference in Monticello, NY. The Brockport Big Band has been entertaining audiences for the past 18 years. The band is comprised of 17 members who volunteer their time and talents to perform big band music from the ’30s to popular music of today. They perform at the Rochester Jazz Festival each year as well as at schools and various venues throughout the year. All of their concerts are free and open to the public. Sweden to install new Welcome signs

The Sweden Town Board has ordered new Welcome signs for the four main routes into the Town: on Fourth Section Road near the Town of Clarendon border; on Brockport Spencerport Road near the Town of Ogden border; on Lake Road South near the Town of Bergen border; and at the intersection of Sweden Walker Road and East Avenue which is the border with the Town of Clarkson.

Chelsea Hunt – Jeffrey Burrell

Bill and Young Mi Hunt of Brockport are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter Chelsea to Jeffrey Burrell. Jeff is the son of Kim and Steve Burrell of Brockport.

The future bride is a 2010 graduate of Brockport High School. She received her degree in Education and Mathematics from SUNY Oswego, and a Master’s degree from SUNY Albany in Curriculum and Instruction. She is a math teacher at Weymouth High School in Massachusetts.

The groom-to-be is a 2009 graduate of Brockport High School. He received his Industrial Design degree from the rochester Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree in Experience Design from Northeastern University. He is a User Experience Designer for ID.me in Boston, Massachusetts.

Their wedding is planned for the beginning of July 2023 in their hometown of Brockport, where they grew up together. They currently reside just outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

Civil service exams for Correction Officers being offered online

The New York State Department of Civil Service (DCS) announced that 40 county civil service agencies – including Monroe, Orleans, and Genesee – are now offering an online civil service examination for Correction Officers to help improve recruitment for these critical public safety titles. The exam, which is being offered as an online exam for many counties for the first time, is used to fill positions in county jails. Qualified candidates can apply for the exam through May 12 through their local civil service agency (https://www.cs.ny. gov/jobseeker/local/co-exam-list.cfm), then access and complete the online exam from June 1 to 30, 2023.

One program is an online testing of training and experience: we have found that more people register for, and actually take, the online test compared to the usual written test given at some central location. Test results are much quicker, and people from diverse communities and backgrounds are applying for this online test, enabling Sheriffs to increase the diversity of our jail division staff.”

New York State also offers an online Correction Officer Trainee exam for positions located at New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) correctional facilities. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, who also serves as president of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, said, “Most Sheriffs’ Offices in New York State are having significant difficulties in recruiting persons to serve as correction officers in our county jails. Mandated positions often require the use of overtime, which is costly to our counties, and detrimental to our officers who already have a difficult job.
