Hometown Heroes Tribute Dinner held in Churchville On September 29, 1918, PVT Harvey C. Noone was killed in action near San Quentin, France during the Battle of the Hindenberg line. On that same day, by virtue of his sacrifice, his mother, Mary E. Noone, became a Gold Star Mother. His death, and the death of the other local men, who died while serving our nation, was a loss to the entire community. Mary E. Noone lived on East Buffalo Street near Black Creek; just a short walk away, was the Johnson House. On Saturday, September 29, 2018, one hundred years after his death, the community gathered at the Johnson House for a Hometown Heroes Tribute Dinner. The dinner was held in honor of Harvey and all those local men who have answered the call to serve their country and who have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in defense of our nation and the principles of freedom upon which it was founded. Also honored were their mothers, Gold Star Mothers. The speaker for the evening was Town and Village Historian, Ron Belczak. In his remarks, Ron told about the journey of Harvey C. Noone which began in the small, rural community of Churchville where, at the time of WWI, electricity was just beginning to be installed, to his enlistment in the Army, to his service and death in France and to his burial with full military honors in Creekside Cemetery. Serving as the Master of Ceremonies was author, journalist and radio talk show host, Bob Lonsberry. Both a veteran himself and the father of service members,
Ron Belczak, Town of Riga and Village of Churchville historian, speaking about the journey of Harvey C. Noone from Churchville to his death in WWI in France and returning to Churchville’s Creekside Cemetery.
he is a well-known supporter of our troops and a strong advocate of our freedoms. Bob spoke of the spirit, grit, and determination that has been exhibited by individual service members, and our armed services as a whole, wherever they have been called upon to take up arms and defend our nation and our freedoms. He reminded all that the price of freedom is not free. And, he described how, at the death of a service member, the blue star flag, which is hung in the window of someone actively serving our nation, is replaced with a flag that in its center is a Gold Star, signifying the death of a hero and the creation of a Gold Star Mother; a woman who, from that moment forward, is someone to be embraced, honored and cared for by her community. In honor of the Harvey C. Noone Legion Post’s Centennial Year Commemoration and Tribute to its namesake, Harvey C. Noone, the Town of Riga planted an oak tree on the grounds of the Legion Post. The Post Home is adjacent to the Town Hall, which was built a few years ago on land donated by the Legion to the citizens of Riga to build its new Town Hall. The Village of Churchville honored Harvey by planting an oak tree in his honor along the West Shore Trail. At the Tribute Dinner, County Legislator Steve Brew announced that, in Harvey’s honor, the County will donate historic lilacs, derived from the Barry Ellwanger collection that formed the original collection of lilacs in Highland Park, to be planted along the West Shore Trail. The Legion announced its “Living Fields of Honor” project. The inspiration arose from a challenge that Ron Belczak made to those planning this Centennial Year Commemoration. His challenge was to “do something” which would serve as a permanent reminder to future generations of our Hometown Heroes. A sole daffodil, in bloom along the

Left to right – Ron Belczak, historian, Town of Riga and Village of Churchville, Bob Lonsberry, author, talk show host and master of ceremonies, Gilbert Budd, commander, Harvey C. Noone Legion, Post # 954. West Shore Trail, the day an oak honoring Harvey was planted, answered the challenge. By planting daffodils near each oak, a Living Field of Honor would be created and every spring our Hometown Heroes will be remembered and honored. Daffodils not only live for decades, in a naturalized setting, their display multiplies and grows each year. As Living Fields of Honor, each spring they will emerge with their message of beauty, remembrance, rebirth and hope for our nation. In honor of their attendance, daffodil bulbs will be planted for each Tribute Dinner guest. Donations will be accepted toward the purchase of additional bulbs. Planting will occur when the bulbs, which are shipped from fields in Holland, located not far from the battlefield in France where Harvey C. Noone gave his life defending freedom and serving his country, arrive “home” in Churchville. Commander Gilbert Budd concluded the evening by presenting Bob Lonsberry with models of two bricks that will be added to the Hometown Heroes section of the Community Memorial Park. One commemorates the Hometown Heroes Tribute Dinner and the other is In Honor of Bob Lonsberry, the Proud American who joined the community in paying tribute to our Hometown Heroes. 12th AnnuAl CAndy Buy BACk Presented by Steven J. Thompson, D.D.S.
For the past 12 years we’ve marked Halloween by helping kids cut back a little on their Halloween candy consumption while also offering them a way to help support our troops overseas. During the week after Halloween we’ve invited kids of all ages to our office for a “Candy Buy Back” where they can exchange any unwanted Halloween candy for $1 per pound. Every child who participates receives a new toothbrush and several other goodies. In recent years we’ve also had lots of adults drop off their left over candy as well. All candy collected (along with toothbrushes and toothpaste) is forwarded to Operation Gratitude where it is included in special care packages and sent to individual servicemen and women overseas. Operation Gratitude has now sent over 1.6 million packages and we’re proud to have been a part of
that effort. Over the years we’ve had a great time, collected hundreds of pounds of candy, given away door prizes, and awarded prizes for the best adult and child costumes. One year, Time Warner News even came to video our event and aired a nice report about it. This year we will be collecting Candy at our office November 5th-8th from 8 AM to 5 PM. Call for off hours delivery. The troops also need personal items like disposable razors, chapstick, AA batteries and deodorant which we can ship as well. We’ll be posting more information here, on our website and Facebook over the next few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has made this such a successful event each year. We are located at 42 Public Square, Holley and can be reached at 638-5435.
Our goal is to “create” happy, healthy patients through gentle care, education & excellence in dentistry.

Toys For Tots gearing up for the 2018 holiday season In 2013, the local Marine Corps Reserve Training Center closed because of Federal government budget cuts. At that time all training for local Marine Corps Reservists was transferred out of this area to Buffalo, Syracuse and Erie, Pennsylvania. This left a huge area without Toys For Tots support. This includes Monroe, and all surrounding counties. At that time the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Greater Rochester and the Marine Corps League Auxiliary took on the task of Toys For Tots for this area. The group consists of veteran Marines and their spouses, families and friends. In 2013, they collected over 7,300 toys, which were distributed to over 3,000 children. They program has grown each year, and in 2017 over 52,000 toys were collected and distributed to over 20,000 children. Toy collection and distribution is done through a lot of volunteer hours and the cooperation of many local schools, churches, volunteer groups and huge support from the Salvation Army. 2017 was extremely successful for Toys For Tots, but it did not end in a completely positive note. The national toy store Toys R Us closed its doors. They were a national sponsor for Tots For Tots, contributing a large quantity of toys each year. Toy demands and requests are growing each year. The challenge is to close this gap of toy loss from Toys R Us. There are several ways that community members, businesses and organizations can help. •Work with Toys For Tots to drop-off collection boxes in your local zip code area. You can also assist in toy collection when the collection time ends, again in your zip code area. •Assist in sorting, labeling and grouping toys for the different organizations which Toys for Tots provides toys to after toy collection is complete. •Events are popular with local businesses, organizations and groups who set aside one day each year to collect toys for Toys For Tots at their workplace, restaurant or holiday venues. You can also have toy collection boxes placed at your business location. Help with toy collection is needed in November and early December. •Join the Toys For Tots committee of volunteers who just want to help kids with sharing and caring. No one is paid to do this and no one is on a Toys For Tots payroll. To help Toys for Tots, visit rochester-ny.toysfortots.org/ and fill out a volunteer request for all of the things previously mentioned. Call Jason at 585-355-8586 to get additional information or to see what is available in your area, or call Frank at 585-455-5221 if you would like to work with box distribution and collection, event participation and/or toy handling and distribution. RMSC names Brockport HS alum as new President and CEO The Board of Trustees of the Rochester Museum and Science Center (RMSC) has announced that, after an international search, Hillary Olson will join the Museum as President and CEO. Olson, an Ogden native and graduate of Brockport High School, joins RMSC with more than 24 years of experience working at science museums and informal learning institutions across the United States. When Hillary Olson was 11 years old, her elementary school class took a field trip to the Strasenburgh Planetarium. That trip changed her life. While her classmates had a fine time on the trip, it stuck with Olson in a larger way--she couldn’t stop thinking about the size and scale of the solar system, the Milky Way Galaxy, and the universe. In fact, Olson says, “It was an obsession. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I earned a degree in Space Sciences and I still don’t fully grasp the scale of our universe, but I’ve spent each day since that field trip thinking about it.” Olson is now being tapped to engage RMSC’s next generation of explorers, innovators, and lifelong learners. Olson comes to RMSC from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she served as Vice President of Audience and Community Engagement at the Milwaukee Public Museum (MPM), a natural and cultural history museum that includes the largest planetarium in Wisconsin. At MPM, Olson was responsible for all aspects of the public face of the museum, including Education, Marketing, Communications, Planetarium and Theater Operations, Visitor Services, Events, Design, Earned Income, and Business Operations. Prior to joining MPM, Olson held leadership positions at the Franklin Institute Science Museum, the Long Island Children’s Museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and the Griffith Observatory. She holds a B.S. in Earth and Space Sciences from Stony Brook University, an M.S.Ed. in Museum Leadership from Bank Street College in Manhattan, and was a 2016 Fellow at the Getty Leadership Institute, an intensive management program for museum executives. Olson also worked as an adjunct instructor for the Museum Studies graduate program at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Olson has led the operations of three major planetariums, and looks forward to the re-opening of the digitally updated Strasenburgh Planetarium later this year.
Hillary Olson. Provided photo. “Connecting museum and nature center visitors of all ages to the wonders of exploration in science, natural history, and our shared cultural background is my passion,” Olson said. “Everyone has something to learn at RMSC, the Strasenburgh Planetarium, and the Cumming Nature Center. I’m excited to be coming back home, and to make a difference in the place that first inspired me.” Olson takes the leadership reins from Kate Bennett, RMSC President and CEO for 22 years. “I extend a warm welcome to Hillary and her family,” said Bennett. “I congratulate the Trustee search committee on their thorough work that has resulted in identifying a great new leader for this institution, at a time when the entire RMSC team is poised for the next exciting phase of service to the community. I am pleased to join with the Trustees, staff, and volunteers in welcoming Hillary back to Rochester, indeed to our region, and working together with our civic-oriented colleagues in government, arts and culture, industry, and universities to lead the RMSC into the future.” Of Bennett, Olson said, “I am humbled and honored to take the helm from such an impactful, dynamic, and beloved leader. For the past two decades, Kate has guided RMSC to the vital role it holds today as a resource for STEM education and lifelong learning for the entire region. I look forward to continuing that work and finding new opportunities to make RMSC accessible to the communities it serves.” Olson and Bennett will continue to work together in the coming months, as Bennett will take on a new role, working on special fundraising projects for RMSC. Olson will begin at RMSC in November. Provided information

sports & recreation Wengender hat trick makes it 57 straight for Rangers by Warren Kozireski The last time the two-time defending New York State champion Spencerport girl’s soccer lost a game was in the Section V playoff semi-finals three years ago. Senior and University of Buffalo bound Leah Wengender scored three goals to lead the Rangers to a 5-0 victory over GatesChili in rainy and foggy conditions to extend their unbeaten streak to 57 games. Wengender opened the scoring in the 21st minute after taking a feed from junior Maddie Tortora. The only other threat came in the final minute of the first half as Maddy Brongo had her attempt from 20yards out stopped in what was a lackluster first 40 minutes. “The halftime speech got us going,” Wengender said. “We were slow and kind of expecting it in warmups and the first half. We played well, but maybe mentally slow. But we found it and got it going.” To the tune of four unanswered second half goals.
Wengender “bananaed” a corner kick into the net at 43:41 for her second of the game and, a little over two minutes later, had another corner kick deflected out right to foot of senior Natalie Choate, who found the back of the net from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season. Freshman Alyssa Hackett assisted on the third Wengender tally in the 58th minute and, at 64:02, the Brongo sisters teamed up to close the scoring with freshman Lily passing to junior Maddy for her third of the campaign. “We know they sometimes pace themselves for the long haul of the game or the season and we (the coaches) sometimes need to remind them to get it going while also keeping it fun,” Rangers head coach Jamie Schneider said. Spencerport has three games remaining before attempting to defend their state title, including senior day October 12 for the final game of the regular season.
Saints drop homecoming OT tilt by Warren Kozireski It was a tale of two halves as Churchville-Chili held a 13-0 halftime lead while limiting Greece Olympia/Odyssey to just 53 yards of offense, but allowed touchdowns on the first three possessions of the second in what became a 28-20 overtime loss. On their second offensive possession, the Saints rattled off a 10-play, 69-yard drive capped by a 10-yard flea flicker touchdown pass from senior Dominic Bethune to sophomore Joey Gibson on a fourth down play at the 11-yard line. Luca DiRose’s extra point made it 7-0 Saints. Late in the second quarter, senior running back Daj’jear Mewborn cutback for a 42 yard gain on the first lay to take the ball to the Spartans 18-yard line. Six running plays later, Mewborn took an inside handoff two yards for the score, but the extra point was no giving the Saints a 13-0 advantage. The kickoff return team imploded for the Saints forcing the offense to start at their own two and three-yard line on consecutive possessions. The first led to a Spartans interception and a five-yard touchdown but a failed two-point conversion cutting the lead to 13-6. The next Saints possession started at their own three and resulted in a short punt with a 20-yard return. The 34-yard scoring drive capped by a 13-yard inside screen pass and two-point conversion gave the Spartans a 14-13 lead. The Spartans extended their lead to 20-
13 with a 66-yard drive that started late in the third quarter and early fourth. Greece took over six minutes off the clock, but had their long drive ended on downs with Saints linebacker Dylan Herman stopping one rushing attempt in the backfield. After Churchville-Chili threw an interception on their ensuing offensive possession seeming to end any hope, their defense held the Spartans with Gibson blocking a punt to set up the Saints in enemy territory at the 15-yard line. On second down and with 17 seconds remaining, quarterback Jaden Nelomes tossed a jump ball into the end zone that was tipped into the air and caught by senior Terrence Wilson for the touchdown. DiRose’s extra point tied the game to send it to overtime. The Spartans needed one play to retake the lead on a 20-yard touchdown strike and the ensuing two-point conversion. The Saints tried a trick-play on their first possession in the extra session, but it was intercepted to end the game. Mewborn led the Saints with 136 yards rushing on 24 carries and one touchdown while Wilson finished with three receptions for 29 yards a one touchdown. Nelomes was 5-for-11 passing for 53 yards and one touchdown. On defense, the 1-4 Saints were led by Wilson with 5.5 tackles with Brennan Figler making five tackles plus Gibson and Dylan Herman each with 4.5 tackles - two each for loss. Masiere Tisdale had 1.5 sacks and three solo tackles.
Farnsworth leads Bees to tenth win by Warren Kozireski Junior Madison Farnsworth registered 18 kills and 17 digs as Byron-Bergen avenged an early season loss to Attica in four sets 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 in girl’s volleyball. “Attica played better than when we played them there, but we played so much better,” Bees head coach Cindy D’Errico said. The first set was tied 20-20 before Farnsworth had one kill and one ace sandwiching an ace by freshman Alexandra Vurraro and a kill from junior Hannah VanSkiver to secure the victory. Attica led the second set 12-9, the Bees began their comeback after a timeout with a kill by junior Annabella Vurraro and a Farnsworth ace. Junior Hannah Catalino helped build the lead to four with an ace before Attica twice closed to within one point of the lead. But a late ace by Alexandra
Vurraro and two Farnsworth kills ended any hopes of a comeback. The Bees led the third set by as many as six points, but the momentum quickly changed as the Blue Devils ran off ten consecutive points to lead by four. ByronBergen came back with an 8-3 run of their own with two kills from Farnsworth and aces served by Alexandra Vurraro and Catalino to put the Bees back up 21-20. But Attica finished with a 5-1 run to ruin the bid for a sweep. In the final set, Attica again led early thanks to a 9-1 run, but the Bees finally found their offensive and defensive rhythm with a 16-4 streak of their own to take control. Annabella Vurraro led the Bees with 18 digs with five aces while Alexandra Vurraro dished out 27 assists and added three aces. VanSkiver chipped in seven kills with a pair of aces.

It is a slow grower - only two to four inches per year - and can be used as a container plant. Dwarf Alberta Spruce works well for formal landscape design and is commonly used to line entryways or as a focal point. Its light green color is beautiful in every season, and can be a way to highlight the colorful fall foliage of deciduous plants. Of course, their nearly perfect conical shape makes dwarf Alberta spruce great for decorating with Christmas lights during the holidays. Dwarf Alberta spruce are easy to maintain as they rarely need pruning. The tree naturally maintains its shape, especially when given the proper spacing for growth, and the short, soft needles result in a very solid and full appearance. According to University of Illinois Extension, dwarf Alberta spruce can reach 10 feet high and three feet wide, so plan accordingly. The plant might need pruning if new growth begins to revert back to the large Alberta White spruce, which could occur if cells lose their dwarf mutation. Be sure to remove any of these revertant areas cutting below the area where the revertant branch begins. To plant dwarf Alberta spruce, select a spot in full or partial sun with very welldrained soil - they do not tolerate wet feet. Additionally, pollution, road salt and high heat are not tolerated by dwarf Alberta spruce. The National Gardening Association recommends measuring the depth and width of the soil in your tree’s container. Dig a hole to that depth and two to three times wider. Loosen the soil around the sides of the hole to help roots penetrate, but do not loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole - the disturbed soil may settle and leave the the tree

Dwarf Alberta spruce are a versatile small evergreen tree for the home landscape. Photo by Kristina Gabalski. planted too deeply. Amend poor soil with one-third compost before backfilling. Mulch newly planted trees with two to four inches of shredded bark to conserve soil moisture and prevent weeds. As with all trees, keep mulch away from the trunk. When watering, gently soak with a slow, steady stream of water or use a soaker hose. Spider mites can plague dwarf Alberta spruce. Watch out for these pests who suck on plant juices and can leave a tree looking yellow and browned. You can check for mites by holding a white piece of paper under a branch. Shake the branch and if you see tiny red specks which are moving, you have mites. Spider mite infestation can be controlled non-chemically with a forceful stream of water - however, watch not to over-soak roots. To control chemically, there are many products which include the active ingredients bifenthrin, dicofol, and fentabutatin-oxide. Illinois Extension notes that canola, clove, cottonseed, petroleum or sesame oils can all be used along with insecticidal soap.

Halloween stories come to life at the Ogden Farmers’ Library The October season is in full swing at the Ogden Farmers’ Library as they welcome storytellers from the Genesee Country Village and Museum to recount Edgar Allan Poe’s most chilling tales. The program is set for October 10 at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. The library has partnered with the GCV&M and their Moveable Museum Program to regale listeners with the drama of Poe’s work, as well as offer insight into the writer’s life and times. The focus of the presentation will be Poe’s famous The Tell Tale Heart but the storytellers dabble in some of his other work as well. With the continual library goal of promoting literacy, the program sheds a spotlight
on older fiction that sometimes goes unnoticed in our modern world. “Since our media is so visceral these days, we forget how powerful Poe’s stories are,” says Patrick Montanaro, Communications and Technology Library Assistant. “These descriptions are only enhanced when a great storyteller puts force behind each and every word.” The program will be held in the Ogden Farmers’ Library meeting room located at 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport, with a start time set for 7 p.m. The program is recommended for anyone 12 and up but younger children accompanied by adults are welcome. Admission is free. Provided information
GCV&M takes a spooky turn Local tales of the supernatural come to life at Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford during the “Spirits of the Past” tours, from October 17 through 20. Costumed guides will lead guests by candlelight on 75-minute walking tours through the darker recesses of the Village to experience spine-tingling twists on historical accounts and spooky folklore, as they re-discover the eerie tales that held Western New Yorkers in suspense some 150 years ago. This year the Historic Village is overrun with witches of all types - secret and undisguised, good and evil - as depicted in eight theatrical vignettes.
Tours will begin in the early evening and run until after dark each night from Wednesday, October 17 through Saturday, October 20. Tickets for the tours are $25 each, and new this year guests can make a night of it at the new Spirits Buffet Dinner, available each evening for $10 per person, as well as a cash bar for those in need of liquid courage. Advanced reservations are required. For availability and specific times, see the museum’s website: https://www.gcv.org/events/ spirits-of-the-past-theatrical-tours/ Provided information
Take a ride on the Halloween Trolley Express The New York Museum of Transportation presents the Halloween Trolley Express on Saturday, October 20. Visitors can take the trolley to the Halloween Patch and enjoy complimentary cider and donuts as kids decorate their free baby pumpkins. Take a picture with the Halloween Trolley, then head into the museum for trick-or-treating in the trolley cars and the steam locomotive. There will be a spooky Halloween Walk in the model train room. Join in the games, win prizes and enjoy live music. Costumes are welcome. Cost is $12 for adults and $10 for children ages three through 12. Rides depart at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., by reservation only. Purchase tickets online at www.nymtmuseum.org/halloween. GPAS presents “The Addams Family” The Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) moves forward with the newly reopened Greece Theatre Company and the production of “The Addams Family.” The production will be held at the 700-seat Lyric Theatre Main Stage, located at 440 East Avenue in downtown Rochester from October 26 through November 4. Featuring the original characters from the television series and cartoons, the story follows every father’s worst nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. GPAS President, Eric Vaughn Johnson, reveals that this year’s production is intended for the whole family. “While last year’s production of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ was a darker show aimed for adults, ‘The Addams Family’ is a show you’ll want to bring the young ones to,” Johnson boasted this GPAS production has three professionals bringing multiple talents to the stage. “The Addams Family” performance dates are Friday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Octo-
ber 28 at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m. (ASL Interpreted Performance), Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, November 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at GreecePerformingArts.org and at all area Wegmans. Tickets are $25 for adults and $22 for seniors and students. For more information visit GreecePerformingArts. org, follow GPAS on Facebook or call the GPAS Hotline at 585-234-5636. Three of the selected singers also participated last year. The students chosen to perform are sopranos Jacey Donahue, Hope Hersom,

Joe’s stories old, new, mostly true
Silo Series #2 by Joe Reinschmidt When I first saw this silo I thought of it as an airport control tower but I knew there was no airport or private landing strip near by. From a relative who lives in that area, I learned that the owner felt it would make a nice party room with a view. It stands on a hill on the west side of Otisco Lake. Since the lake is partially visible from the road, NY Route 174, there is probably a nice view of most of the lake from the top. Unless there is an elevator inside, preparing for and getting to the party require more than a little effort. Depending on what type of beverages are served, it could also make leaving the party a challenge.
PUBLIC HEARING AREAVARIANCE
MICHAEL BARBARITA 5711 WEST WAUTOMA BEACH ROAD Application of Michael Barbarita, owner Michael Barbarita seeking relief from Town Code§520-21C(2)(b)[1] to place a 10’ x 20‘shed in the west side yard behind the main front foundation line. There is 13.9 feet from the side lot line to the dwelling. The request is for the following: a 2.5’ west side setback variance and an 8’ variance for the setback from the existing dwelling. Tax account# 008.160-01-033. This is in the S/R zone along with the LWRP. All interested parties will be given the opportunity to be heard at this time. Directed by Jonathan Allentoff, this concert featuring NPR/WXXI Classical 91.5 Host Michael Lasser will showcase the talents of nationallyacclaimed vocalist Mary Wojciechowski and noted Rochester clarinet soloist Rachel Roessel. The program, created in collaboration with Lasser, includes instrumental and vocal selections from The Music Man, The Wizard of Oz, Carousel, Chicago, Girl Crazy, Good News, Hallelujah, Baby!, and Carnival in new arrangements by Allentoff inspired by the original scores. Lasser, host of the nationally-syndicated public radio show, “Fascinatin’ Rhythm,” will narrate the concert and share his unique musical insights as a Peabody award-winning broadcaster, author, and professor.
