Albion’s former Swan Library building may get new purpose by Kristina Gabalski Local resident Chad Fabry is expected to take ownership of the former Swan Library in the Village of Albion this month. In February, Hoag Library trustees accepted a $53,000 purchase offer for the building from Fabry, who works primarily as a home and building inspector. Fabry says he has a passion for restoring and stewarding historic properties. He has spent years restoring the Fabry family home outside of Holley

- an Italianate villa designed and built in the 1860s by William V.N. Barlow, a prominent designer/builder in the area who also designed and built the Swan building and, according to Fabry, was involved with just about every major structure in Orleans County including the County Courthouse in Albion. The Swan was originally constructed as a mansion in 1851 for R.S. Burrows. One of his employees, William G. Swan, later acquired the structure, Fabry says. The building was donated by the Swan family for use as a library - which opened in

Blue Devils hockey champions by Warren Kozireski When the Brockport Blue Devils ice hockey team last won a Section V title in 2003, the current seniors were five years old. And the beginning of this season wasn’t going to plan with the team off to a 1-5-1 start. But fast forward from two days before Christmas to early March and Brockport turned their season around in a big way and, as the third seed in Class B, never

trailed in defeating Irondequoit 6-5 at RIT’s Ritter Arena to win the Section V title. “This is something you play for your entire life,” senior forward Dylan Sharpe said. “All the blood, sweat and tears and travel hockey all comes to that moment right there. This is the best way to end our senior year and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other guys.” Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 7:28 of the first period as defenseman Walden Grady blasted home

1900 and served the community for 112 years. The new Hoag Library opened its doors just down the street in the summer of 2012. Fabry says he and his wife, Alana, were initially asked if they were interested in purchasing some of the period furniture in the library for their home. “Once I saw the nearly intact interior, the walnut staircase, the oak floors and trim, the old lighting and the fireplace surrounds, I was hooked,” Fabry says. His wife took a little more convincing, he notes, but the couple decided to make an offer on the furniture and the building. “Ironically, the library board voted to sell us the building, but they kept the furniture,” Fabry says. Fabry inspects homes and buildings for a living - he owns StructureSmart, Inc. “I specialize in historic structures,” he says. “I’m interested in the history and I have a reverence for the skilled craftsmen who built these grand old structures. Clearly, they took pride in their efforts.” The idea of converting the Swan into apartments is repulsive to Fabry. “I think the building is nice enough to attract quality professionals or other dignified uses which won’t require significant changes

I think we’ll have space available by May.” Neil Johnson, Ph.D., Albion Village Historian and former long-time treasurer of the Swan Library, says he’s pleased the Fabrys are purchasing the building. “It’s the best we could hope for,” he says. “We spent years trying to think of a use.” Johnson notes the library board worked to keep the building in good condition over the years. He adds that because of its size and layout, the mansion probably never should have been used as a library. “By 1920, it had outgrown the location,” he says. Fabry says he appreciates the building’s historical significance to Albion and Orleans County. “It’s been in the public eye for over a century,” he says. “It’s hosted concerts and readings and played a role in thousands of people’s lives and memories. It’s graced the corner (at 4 North Main Street) with its architectural beauty and well-groomed grounds for 165 years. Buildings like this and other significant historic structures throughout Albion are a source of pride for the community and a wonderful testament to Albion’s heyday.” Because the building has been in public use for so long, Fabry says he plans to make the large reading room on the first floor accessible to the community. For the second year in a row, Molly Kate-Brooks Smock (shown at right) is the youngest Irish dancer from Rochester to represent the USA at the 2015 World Championship in Montreal, Canada. Molly had a successful competition at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Irish Dance Championship over Thanksgiving break and qualified for the Irish Dance World Championship to be held in Montreal March 28 to April 5. To qualify she took 8th place out of 120 dancers in her age group. Molly is a high honor roll student at the Oliver Middle School in Brockport, and an active member of the Safe School Ambassadors who help address bullying and a member of the school’s book club. She has also been named the first student of the month in her sixth grade class. Molly will be joined this year by her older sister Hayley Smock. Hayley, a dean’s list student at The College at Brockport, is returning to the World Championships for the third time. Northwood Elementary School recently held a luncheon and presentation for a group of community members so that they could learn more about the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP) from the students themselves. Hilton School District received authorization to offer the IB-MYP at grades 5-10 last fall. “The event was related to our district goal of engaging and educating the community about our work with IB,” said Principal Kirk Ashton, who organized the event for 17 community members, and eight administrators and staff members. After enjoying lunch and conversation, the group listened to nine students from Laura Mayer’s fifth grade class talk about the MYP and what it means to them. “MYP is the bridge between the Primary Years Programme at Quest Elementary School and the Diploma Programme at Hilton High School,” said Ashton, who gave the audience an overview. “It gives our students a sense of belonging at a critical time when they are going through many personal, social and developmental changes.” Through slides, videos, poems, posters, stories and other projects, the students walked the audience through the IB learner profile traits as they apply to MYP. The students gave up their lunch periods for three weeks to work with their principal on the presentation. At the end of the presentation, the Northwood Theater Club performed a song with pictures of themselves holding signs that illustrated their goals. Provided information

Joe’s stories - old, new, mostly true Snow time stories by Joe Reinschmidt It seems there are many of us that talk about - and seem to long for - a “good old fashioned winter” but now that we are enjoying, or experiencing one, it evokes comments that winters weren’t this bad in past years. That got me thinking about some of the winters we’ve experienced and fortunately have a few pictures to verify them. The picture from 1936 looks like my father Joe thought it would be nice to use blocks of snow like building blocks. I wonder how he got them stacked that high along side the driveway. In the photo from Valentine’s Day 1941, the plows apparently filled the old steel mailbox with snow. Yes, that’s me and my little shovel doing my part to help clear the driveway. There is some lettering inscribed on the snow bank. It reads “Be My Valentine.” No doubt it was my father’s handiwork. In the winter of 1942-43, there was obviously significant snowfall that required the whole family’s efforts to clear the driveway so the 1936 Plymouth in the garage, could get out if it was necessary. They placed me on top of the snow bank for this picture. The other three boys were foster children lucky enough to be living here at the time. The oldest was named John R. He left our home a few years later and eventually joined the Navy. As it happened he wound up serving in three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam and later spent some years in the Reserves. Along the way he married, had five children, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren by the time of his death in December 2013. John was one of the foster children who never forgot us and made it a point to visit occasionally over the years. In more recent years there was the blizzard of 1966 and again in 1977 where we were unable to get home from where we were but those are stories of their own. That was the “old” part of this story. Of course each time we get snow it is “new.” But, is it really new or has it been here before? Given nature’s hydrological circle that draws water from the earth into the clouds and sends it down in the form of rain or snow, there must be some particles

Winter 1942-43. that end up back where they came from. I guess it doesn’t matter that much since once it’s here we have to deal with it. However, I wonder if I should look at a snow flake and ask “haven’t I seen you before?”

“Spring Ahead” and check lifesaving smoke and CO alarms The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure that they are functioning properly. FASNY recommends cleaning all alarms to remove any debris that might impede their function and to change batteries. As many new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms now include batteries that have a 10-year life span, owners of these devices are asked to test their alarms to ensure they are working properly. FASNY is supporting state legislation which would require that all smoke alarms sold in New York State come equipped with batteries that have a 10-year life span. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), two-thirds of all fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. Though many homeowners and businesses do in fact have smoke alarms, these units are often not functioning due to a lack of proper maintenance caused by human error. Smoke and CO alarm tips •Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button.

•Check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year (if applicable). If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. DO NOT disable the unit. •Vacuum or blow out any dust that might accumulate in the unit. •Never borrow a battery from an alarm to use somewhere else. •Never paint a smoke or CO alarm. •Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area. •Smoke alarms should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation. •Smoke alarms should be completely replaced every ten years. •Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Both locations - at 500 Hamlin-Clarkson Townline Road in Hamlin and 2139 North Union Street (Barefoot Landing Plaza) in Spencerport - are celebrating 20 years since the opening of the Spencerport location with a roll-back of prices to those of twenty years ago. Mark Kronenberg - the name “Krony’s” comes from his nickname, Krony - founded the business in the early 1980s and has done the price roll-back before to celebrate anniversaries. Customers loved it, he says. “We had a crazy response ... we had a lot of fun.” He remembers a plain large pizza was $6.95 back in the early days of the business. Mark, who has worked in the restaurant business for 50 years, observes the longevity of Krony’s is testimony to how good the products are. “We do it the old-fashioned way,” he says, “the dough and sauce are made from scratch, we use the best tomatoes.” The pizzas are hearth-baked and fresh dough is made daily. In addition to pizza, Krony’s menu features a long list of items including munchies, specialty sandwiches, hot and cold subs, salads, soups and Krony “Stromboni.” The Spencerport location offers draft beer (growlers to go) and wine by the glass. Hamlin offers soft serve ice cream in season. One unique aspect of the business is that Krony’s doesn’t deliver. “We are dinosaurs,” Mark readily admits, but explains that “... with delivery, you don’t see the people.” For Mark, personal interaction with his customers is top priority. Orders are made on a first name basis, “We don’t take last names,” he says. And no delivery doesn’t mean not convenient. The Hamlin location has a drive-

thru. “It helps tremendously,” Mark says. “People with cell phones call on the way home. They don’t have to get the kids out of the car. It’s convenient.” Krony’s decades-long success is also evident in its long-time staff. Mark says he’s had the same manager for 31 years and some employees for more than 20 years. Young people and students form a major part of his work force and Mark says he especially enjoys them. Some who have started their careers with him over the years have gone on to own their own restaurants. One is a top chef in Seattle, another is in Washington, D.C., Mark says. “It’s fun; the kids are the best.” Mark has ten full-time employees - 20 to 30 high school and college students work for him. Steve Enos owns the Spencerport location. He began working for Mark at Krony’s while a teenager (Mark remembers him coming in to play video games even before that). He spent a few years working at Wegmans and another restaurant, but in 1993 decided he wanted to open his own place. “I got hold of Mark and opened under his name and recipes,” Steve says. The Spencerport location is just as personable as the Hamlin location. “Eighty percent of the people who walk in, I’ll know their first name,” Steve says. “I’m always up at the front. I try to be the face of the business. We’ve got some people who’ve been coming every week since the day we opened. It’s a great feeling.” Just as with Mark, Steve says employee turnover is low, meaning the staff knows their customers well. Steve says he also enjoys working with young people as well as his adult staff. “Some come at age 14 or 15 and work here until college or after,” he says. The longevity of Krony’s speaks for itself, Steve observes. “The pizza we serve is the best ... we have wine, Mark does ice cream ... the variety is there. A lot of love goes into it. Dylan Sharpe started a three-goal third period onslaught for the Blue Devils as he pounded in the rebound from a Mitchell Henshaw shot at 1:02. 44 seconds later it was Ekiyor scoring on a goalmouth scramble with an assist from Andrew Harley. Henshaw then scored what would prove to be the game-winner at 8:44 of the third as he deked around a defenseman and put a wrister past the goaltender to give Brockport a 6-3 advantage. Patrick Viscardi was credited with the only assist. But Irondequoit was not done. A shot from the slot found the back of the net with

Area athletes are state champions by Warren Kozireski Hilton wrestlers Yanni Diakomihalis and Louie DePrez each won state titles at the New York State Wrestling Championships at the Albany Times-Union Center while Brockport swimmer Nick Olson brought home a Federation and public schools title at the Swimming and Diving Championships held at Ithaca College. Diakomihalis won his third consecutive state title winning the final at 120 lb. via fall with just seven seconds remaining on the third period clock. He also won the 106 lb. title in 2014 and the 99 lb. class in 2013. The sophomore won his first round bout via pin in 3:19, his second round by major decision 9-1 and the semi-final by pin in 1:08 prior to the final. With the Gillett Road bridge closed (now 8 ton weight limit) to full size buses, it leaves us the Union Street bridge which now has a 12 ton limit. That means one bus alone with no other vehicles. I, myself, cross this bridge many times a day and it is very difficult at times. All we ask is for a little kindness, just a few seconds to reach the other side. We really appreciate all of you who do wait and give us the opportunity to get across. I, along with many others, give a nice wave to say thank you. And for the safety of the children always stop at our flashing red lights.

Empty Bowls raise funds for hunger outreach Hilton School District’s Elementary Art Department will be hosting the Second Annual Empty Bowls Open House and Dinner on Wednesday, March 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Northwood Elementary School, 433 North Greece Road. Last year’s event raised over $1,800 to fight local and global hunger. Students at all three Hilton elementary schools create bowls that are then displayed the night of the event. For $5, each guest receives a handcrafted bowl of their choice and a simple meal of soup and bread. The bowl serves as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

Dr. Pastel will then make the necessary arrangements for you to present your grievance to a Grievance Committee within five days upon the receipt of your written complaint.

Those intending to file a grievance due to alleged discrimination must follow the grievance procedure as established by the District. A copy of the grievance procedure may be obtained from the Interim Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. Individuals who are not comfortable directing a Title IX complaint to the designated officers may contact the Superintendent of Schools directly regarding their complaint.

Legal Notice Village of Brockport Request for Proposals Professional Cleaning Services The Village of Brockport seeks proposals for professional cleaning services 6/1/15-5/31/16 for Village buildings as follows: - Village Hall at 49 State Street (1st floor & part of 2nd floor) – weekly year-round - Police Department at 1 Clinton Street – weekly year round - DPW at 38 East Avenue (offices, restroom, break room) – weekly year round -Welcome Center at 11 Water Street – weekly during season May 1st – October 15th -Emily L. Knapp Museum & Library of Local History at 49 State Street (2nd & 3rd floors) – twice/year To be least disruptive to operations, cleaning is to be done during the daytime hours on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Proposal should price out each building separately as well as separate twice/year window cleaning, but not steam cleaning of carpets as that is under separate contract with a carpet cleaning vendor.
