Albion’s former Swan Library building may get new purpose by Kristina Gabalski Local resident Chad Fabry is expected to take ownership of the former Swan Library in the Village of Albion this month. In February, Hoag Library trustees accepted a $53,000 purchase offer for the building from Fabry, who works primarily as a home and building inspector. Fabry says he has a passion for restoring and stewarding historic properties. He has spent years restoring the Fabry family home outside of Holley
- an Italianate villa designed and built in the 1860s by William V.N. Barlow, a prominent designer/builder in the area who also designed and built the Swan building and, according to Fabry, was involved with just about every major structure in Orleans County including the County Courthouse in Albion. The Swan was originally constructed as a mansion in 1851 for R.S. Burrows. One of his employees, William G. Swan, later acquired the structure, Fabry says. The building was donated by the Swan family for use as a library - which opened in

Blue Devils hockey champions by Warren Kozireski When the Brockport Blue Devils ice hockey team last won a Section V title in 2003, the current seniors were five years old. And the beginning of this season wasn’t going to plan with the team off to a 1-5-1 start. But fast forward from two days before Christmas to early March and Brockport turned their season around in a big way and, as the third seed in Class B, never
trailed in defeating Irondequoit 6-5 at RIT’s Ritter Arena to win the Section V title. “This is something you play for your entire life,” senior forward Dylan Sharpe said. “All the blood, sweat and tears and travel hockey all comes to that moment right there. This is the best way to end our senior year and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other guys.” Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 7:28 of the first period as defenseman Walden Grady blasted home
1900 and served the community for 112 years. The new Hoag Library opened its doors just down the street in the summer of 2012. Fabry says he and his wife, Alana, were initially asked if they were interested in purchasing some of the period furniture in the library for their home. “Once I saw the nearly intact interior, the walnut staircase, the oak floors and trim, the old lighting and the fireplace surrounds, I was hooked,” Fabry says. His wife took a little more convincing, he notes, but the couple decided to make an offer on the furniture and the building. “Ironically, the library board voted to sell us the building, but they kept the furniture,” Fabry says. Fabry inspects homes and buildings for a living - he owns StructureSmart, Inc. “I specialize in historic structures,” he says. “I’m interested in the history and I have a reverence for the skilled craftsmen who built these grand old structures. Clearly, they took pride in their efforts.” The idea of converting the Swan into apartments is repulsive to Fabry. “I think the building is nice enough to attract quality professionals or other dignified uses which won’t require significant changes
a shot from the left point with assists from Ben Leach and Matt Roe. But the Blue Devils found themselves in first period penalty trouble, which allowed Irondequoit to tie the game and eventually take the lead with two goals just three minutes apart and ended the first period up 2-1. The Eagles earlier this season defeated Brockport twice - 4-3 on December 9 and 4-2 January 20. “The first period was a little tough because we had so many penalties,” Sharpe said. “When we’re five-on-five we were dominating the game, but five-on-four
to the structure,” Fabry says. “Our tentative plan is to use the existing floor plan, freshen up the interior and hopefully find three or four awesome tenants to use the space.” As soon as possible after closing - set for mid-March - Fabry says they will clean and paint, “We’ll save the murals of the village buildings,” he says, and make the bathrooms nicer. “Then we’ll wait for prospective tenants to describe their needs before we make other improvements. I think we’ll have space available by May.” Neil Johnson, Ph.D., Albion Village Historian and former long-time treasurer of the Swan Library, says he’s pleased the Fabrys are purchasing the building. “It’s the best we could hope for,” he says. “We spent years trying to think of a use.” Johnson notes the library board worked to keep the building in good condition over the years. He adds that because of its size and layout, the mansion probably never should have been used as a library. “By 1920, it had outgrown the location,” he says. Fabry says he appreciates the building’s historical significance to Albion and Orleans County. “It’s been in the public eye for over a century,” he says. “It’s hosted concerts and readings and played a role in thousands of people’s lives and memories. It’s graced the corner (at 4 North Main Street) with its architectural beauty and well-groomed grounds for 165 years. Buildings like this and other significant historic structures throughout Albion are a source of pride for the community and a wonderful testament to Albion’s heyday.” Because the building has been in public use for so long, Fabry says he plans to make the large reading room on the first floor accessible to the community. Fabry is also eager to hear ideas regarding use of the building and welcomes suggestions and input. Contact him at chad@structuresmart.com.
they were taking it to us. When we settle down and didn’t take penalties and actually played five-on-five and our style of hockey, that’s how we’ve been playing our best all year.” Even with top-four defenseman Ben Leach forced to leave the game with an injury and role player Jack Moore thrust into his role and playing key minutes, the Blue Devils received offense from their defense to tie the game 2-2 at 7:58 of the second period. Sweden officials say they are addressing state audit Justice Court concerns Sweden Supervisor Rob Carges says the town has put in place many of the changes recommended by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s Office in an audit of the town Justice Court released the week of February 23. The audit found court justices, “Do not provide adequate oversight of court operations to ensure the accurate and complete collection, deposit, recording and reporting of court moneys in a timely manner.” “The court is kind of its own entity,” Supervisor Carges observes. “Towns are not supposed to be involved; oversight of the court itself is not the town’s duty.” Carges also noted that although the audit was critical, “Audits are always a good thing. I’ve met with two of the justices. They will change things - it’s up to them to follow-through.” The audit, which reviewed court processes and procedures between January 1, 2013 and September 4, 2014, also found justices have not adequately segregated the duties of the clerks and do not regularly review accounting records, bank statements, or monthly reconciliations and accountability analyses. Seventy-one receipts were not deposited within 72 hours of receipt and various receipts or transactions were deleted from the system without a valid, documented reason. Additionally, the audit found that the justices have not developed a policy or procedures to enforce the collection of unpaid fees and fines which resulted in 34 unpaid tickets not being submitted to the DMV scofflaw program and five tickets incorrectly reported as disposed of to the DMV. The court also is not collecting all potential revenue, the audit states. Recommendations made to justices by the state include corrective action to ensure the court clerks’ duties are adequately segregated, reception and review of bank

statements and cancelled check images directly from the bank; review of bank statements, bank reconciliations, and accountability analyses and the court’s accounting records on a regular basis; require the use of manual press-numbered duplicate receipts or work with a software vendor to correct system deficiencies that allow receipts to be altered or deleted; ensure all collections are deposited within 72 hours; and ensure all traffic tickets that are unresolved after 60 days are reported to the DMV for scofflaw. Carges and justices Robert Connors, Kevin Johnson, and Mark Depferd, have submitted a letter of response and a Corrective Action Plan to the state including an enhanced oversight program which has already been implemented. The Corrective Action Plan also includes the establishment by the justices of on-line access to their individual court bank accounts at the bank so they can access all account information directly from the bank. Additionally, justices will examine their accounts no less than once a month -including reconciling and comparing items to ensure that the financial affairs and accounts of the court are being handled accurately, thoroughly and in a timely manner. Clerks of the court have been instructed to immediately report any traffic tickets which remain unresolved after 60 days to the DMV for scofflaw with oversight by the justices. The Corrective Plan states that court clerks and justices will work together to determine the most appropriate course of action for collection of fines and surcharges on case by case basis. “In the instances where it is apparent that a defendant has no intention of paying a fine and surcharge, or where a defendant is unable to pay a fine and surcharge, the court will continue its practice of converting such a fine and surcharge to a civil judgment,” the Corrective Plan states.

Snow time stories by Joe Reinschmidt It seems there are many of us that talk about - and seem to long for - a “good old fashioned winter” but now that we are enjoying, or experiencing one, it evokes comments that winters weren’t this bad in past years. That got me thinking about some of the winters we’ve experienced and fortunately have a few pictures to verify them. The picture from 1936 looks like my father Joe thought it would be nice to use blocks of snow like building blocks. I wonder how he got them stacked that high along side the driveway. In the photo from Valentine’s Day 1941, the plows apparently filled the old steel mailbox with snow. Yes, that’s me and my little shovel doing my part to help clear the driveway. There is some lettering inscribed on the snow bank. It reads “Be My Valentine.” No doubt it was my father’s handiwork. In the winter of 1942-43, there was obviously significant snowfall that required the whole family’s efforts to clear the driveway so the 1936 Plymouth in the garage, could get out if it was necessary. They placed me on top of the snow bank for this picture. The other three boys were foster children lucky enough to be living here at the time. The oldest was named John R. He left our home a few years later and eventually joined the Navy. As it happened he wound up serving in three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam and later spent some years in the Reserves. Along the way he married, had five children, 15 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren by the time of his death in December 2013. John was one of the foster children who never forgot us and made it a point to visit occasionally over the years. In more recent years there was the blizzard of 1966 and again in 1977 where we were unable to get home from where we were but those are stories of their own. That was the “old” part of this story. Of course each time we get snow it is “new.” But, is it really new or has it been here before? Given nature’s hydrological circle that draws water from the earth into the clouds and sends it down in the form of rain or snow, there must be some particles
Winter 1942-43. that end up back where they came from. I guess it doesn’t matter that much since once it’s here we have to deal with it. However, I wonder if I should look at a snow flake and ask “haven’t I seen you before?”

“Spring Ahead” and check lifesaving smoke and CO alarms The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure that they are functioning properly. FASNY recommends cleaning all alarms to remove any debris that might impede their function and to change batteries. As many new smoke and carbon monoxide alarms now include batteries that have a 10-year life span, owners of these devices are asked to test their alarms to ensure they are working properly. FASNY is supporting state legislation which would require that all smoke alarms sold in New York State come equipped with batteries that have a 10-year life span. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), two-thirds of all fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms. Though many homeowners and businesses do in fact have smoke alarms, these units are often not functioning due to a lack of proper maintenance caused by human error. Smoke and CO alarm tips •Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button.
•Check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year (if applicable). If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. DO NOT disable the unit. •Vacuum or blow out any dust that might accumulate in the unit. •Never borrow a battery from an alarm to use somewhere else. •Never paint a smoke or CO alarm. •Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area. •Smoke alarms should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation. •Smoke alarms should be completely replaced every ten years. •Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan. For more information on smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and other information on fire safety and prevention, visit www.fasny.com and www.nfpa.org. Provided information

Krony’s rolls back prices 20 years in anniversary celebration by Kristina Gabalski March 9, 10 and 11 will be an even greater time to order some pizza from Krony’s and celebrate. Both locations - at 500 Hamlin-Clarkson Townline Road in Hamlin and 2139 North Union Street (Barefoot Landing Plaza) in Spencerport - are celebrating 20 years since the opening of the Spencerport location with a roll-back of prices to those of twenty years ago. Mark Kronenberg - the name “Krony’s” comes from his nickname, Krony - founded the business in the early 1980s and has done the price roll-back before to celebrate anniversaries. Customers loved it, he says. “We had a crazy response ... we had a lot of fun.” He remembers a plain large pizza was $6.95 back in the early days of the business. Mark, who has worked in the restaurant business for 50 years, observes the longevity of Krony’s is testimony to how good the products are. “We do it the old-fashioned way,” he says, “the dough and sauce are made from scratch, we use the best tomatoes.” The pizzas are hearth-baked and fresh dough is made daily. In addition to pizza, Krony’s menu features a long list of items including munchies, specialty sandwiches, hot and cold subs, salads, soups and Krony “Stromboni.” The Spencerport location offers draft beer (growlers to go) and wine by the glass. Hamlin offers soft serve ice cream in season. One unique aspect of the business is that Krony’s doesn’t deliver. “We are dinosaurs,” Mark readily admits, but explains that “... with delivery, you don’t see the people.” For Mark, personal interaction with his customers is top priority. Orders are made on a first name basis, “We don’t take last names,” he says. And no delivery doesn’t mean not convenient. The Hamlin location has a drive- thru. “It helps tremendously,” Mark says. “People with cell phones call on the way home. They don’t have to get the kids out of the car. It’s convenient.” Krony’s decades-long success is also evident in its longtime staff. Mark says he’s had the same manager for 31 years and some employees for more than 20 years. Young people and students form a major part of his work force and Mark says he especially enjoys them. Some who have started their careers with him over the years have gone on to own their own restaurants. One is a

Both Krony’s locations - at 500 Hamlin-Clarkson Townline Road in Hamlin and 2139 North Union Street (Barefoot Landing Plaza) in Spencerport - are celebrating 20 years since the opening of the Spencerport location with a roll-back of prices to those of twenty years ago. Above, Mark Kronenberg (right) joins Spencerport owner Steve Enos at the Spencerport Krony’s. WN staff photo. top chef in Seattle, another is in Washington, D.C., Mark says. “It’s fun; the kids are the best.” Mark has ten fulltime employees - 20 to 30 high school and college students work for him. Steve Enos owns the Spencerport location. He began working for Mark at Krony’s while a teenager (Mark remembers him coming in to play video games even before that). He spent a few years working at Wegmans and another restaurant, but in 1993 decided he wanted to open his own place. “I got hold of Mark and opened under his name and recipes,” Steve says. The Spencerport location is just as personable as the Hamlin location. “Eighty percent of the people who walk in, I’ll know their first name,” Steve says. “I’m always up at the front. I try to be the face of the business. We’ve got some people who’ve been coming every week since the day we opened. It’s a great feeling.” Just as with Mark, Steve says employee turnover is low, meaning the staff knows their customers well. Steve says he also enjoys working with young people as well as his adult staff. “Some come at age 14 or 15 and work here until college or after,” he says. The longevity of Krony’s speaks for itself, Steve observes. “The pizza we serve is the best ... we have wine, Mark does ice cream ... the variety is there. A lot of love goes into it. I want you to be happy.” For more details see the Krony’s ad in this newspaper.

Brockport Blue Devils hockey champions Continued from page one Josh Hettinger put his shot over the goaltender’s shoulder after passes from Carlton Ekiyor and Cameron Dony. Brockport retook the lead at 11:08 of the second as Roe skated out from the behind the net to score. But the Eagles tied it 3-3 just 34 seconds later. Dylan Sharpe started a three-goal third period onslaught for the Blue Devils as he pounded in the rebound from a Mitchell Henshaw shot at 1:02. 44 seconds later it was Ekiyor scoring on a goalmouth scramble with an assist from Andrew Harley. Henshaw then scored what would prove to be the gamewinner at 8:44 of the third as he deked around a defenseman and put a wrister past the goaltender to give Brockport a 6-3 advantage. Patrick Viscardi was credited with the only assist. But Irondequoit was not done. A shot from the slot
found the back of the net with 5:46 remaining to make it 6-4 Blue Devils and, with a late power play and the goaltender again pulled for a 6-on-4 advantage, scored again with 31 seconds left to make it a one-goal game. In the closing seconds, again with the extra-attacker, the Eagles threatened again, but Brockport goaltender Riley Emmerson got his blocker pad on a shot for his 28th save to secure the title. “We’re a tight-knit group and we know how to react in these situations because we have all year,” Blue Devils goaltender Emmerson said. “It’s huge for our school and we’re just trying to keep it rolling; we’re not done.” “It feels great to finally come together and win a championship,” senior forward Roe, who scored his 100th career point in the game and was named tournament MVP, said. “I think we always believed, we stuck together and look at us now; we’re the champions.”
Area athletes are state champions by Warren Kozireski Hilton wrestlers Yanni Diakomihalis and Louie DePrez each won state titles at the New York State Wrestling Championships at the Albany Times-Union Center while Brockport swimmer Nick Olson brought home a Federation and public schools title at the Swimming and Diving Championships held at Ithaca College. Diakomihalis won his third consecutive state title winning the final at 120 lb. via fall with just seven seconds remaining on the third period clock. He also won the 106 lb. title in 2014 and the 99 lb. class in 2013. The sophomore won his first round bout via pin in 3:19, his second round by major decision 9-1 and the semi-final by pin in 1:08 prior to the final. Teammate DePrez took a 7-3 decision in his 160 final to win his first state title and follow in the footsteps of older brother Vincent, who won the 145 lb. state title one year ago. DePrez won his first round by pin in 2:38, the second round by a 6-0 decision and the semi-final with a 4-1 decision.
Teammate Austin Hertel won his first two bouts to advance to the 113 lb. semi-final before settling for sixth overall. Hilton won the state team title with 71 points over second place Minisink Valley. Brockport’s Cameron Caldarelli finished fourth in the state at 195 lb. winning his first round with a 13-5 major decision before falling in the quarterfinals. He wrestled back to finish fourth. In swimming, Olson set a new Section V record in winning the 50 freestyle state title in 20.43. He also was second in the 100-yard freestyle finishing .46 seconds behind the winner and was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team with Nathaniel Bartalo, Brandon Amthor and Joe Williams finishing .29 seconds back.

Sigillo Chiropractic Parenthood and Back Peril
You don’t have to be a world-class - or even weekend athlete - to develop aches and pains. Just try being a parent! Starting with a child’s infancy, it’s bending over to change diapers, lifting the baby into car seats, strollers and high chairs, getting down and playing on the floor, Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. piggyback rides and at the end of the day picking up toys. Throw in lugging groceries, cooking dinner, making beds and talking on the phone, maybe with a baby on your hip. And maybe when they’re older, there’s the pickup soccer or basketball game in the yard. All these activities can add up to a load of aches and pains, maybe even strains and worse, on the backs of moms and dads. The role of a parent is a stressful one in many ways and physical stress is certainly one of them. Regular visits to the chiropractor can go a long way toward combating those aches and pains. One of the therapies a chiropractor uses is massage. He or she can get deep into muscles to soothe and loosen them. The chiropractor can also show you techniques for performing some parenting tasks without putting undo strain on the body, as well as offer tips on stretching and exercise to keep yourself in shape enough to manage the physical demands of parenting. You give your kids a treat when they deserve one. Why not give yourself a treat with a visit to a chiropractor. Presented as a service to the community by

Antiques and art discovery weekend features ‘Road Show’ elements Proceeds benefit Drake Library An antiques and art discovery weekend will be held at The College at Brockport, Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and March 22, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. No appointments are needed. The weekend offers everyone the opportunity to have their heirlooms and collectibles verbally analyzed and valued. The public can bring their objects and talk directly with one of nine specialized experts. A $5 fee will be charged per appraisal, at the door. Expert antique, art and collectible appraisers from The Antique Appraisers Road Show, located in Westerlo, NY, will hold the event at the Seymour Union Ballroom, which is located at Residence Drive, Building #22, on campus in Brockport. The Friends of Drake Memorial Library and the Brockport Foundation will host the event. Proceeds from the event will be used to directly benefit the Drake Memorial Library at the College. “Benefits could include new mate-
rials, databases, exhibits, and special programs,” said Jamie L. Beers-Wilson in the Alumni Relations and Development Office. “The Friends of Drake Memorial Library was established just a year ago, and is still in the early stages of identifying specific projects to fund.” In addition to the appraisals, a presentation on buying, selling and appraising fine art will be given by Walter Bazar, an expert in 19th and 20th century painting. Colin Fraser, the former head of Christie’s stamp department will offer a presentation and discussion on stamps. Start times for the talks will be at 1 p.m. on both days. This is the sixteenth road show held in New York state in the past four years. It will be in the Rochester and Brockport area for the first time. For more information about the appraisal day, visit www.facebook.com/gotoroadshow, or call (518) 242-0858. Maps and driving directions can be found on the Facebook page.

Bees beat N-D for first time since 2008 by Warren Kozireski Timing is everything and Byron-Bergen had it on their side in their Section V girls basketball quarterfinal win over Notre Dame. They used a diamond-press defense and put senior Abbie Noeth on the Irish’s’ best player - Rebecca Krenzer - and allowed Notre Dame to score just five points over the eight-minute second quarter as the Bees built a ten point lead largely on Abbie Kelley’s 11 first half points. But the Irish made their run to open the second half rattling off ten straight points to get within one before Kelley hit a putback to end the streak. After the Irish tied the game at 27-27 with 5:45 remaining, the Bees knocked down four consecutive field goals with
Kelley hitting a reverse lay-up and a short jumper and Lindsay Lovett scoring twice on a runner and a lay-up off a perfectly executed inbounds play to extend the lead to eight with 3:12 left. A put-back by Sam Morgante after a Lovett steal and a takeaway-layup by Kelley in the final minute secured the victory, which put third-seed ByronBergen into the Class C1 semi-finals against second-seeded Gananda. “Great players make great plays and Abbie Kelley came up at the right time for us,” Bees head coach Rick Krzewinski said. “Everybody wants to beat Notre Dame, and to do this in a sectional game makes it sweet.” Kelley finished with a team-high 23 points and unofficially added nine rebounds for Bryon-Bergen. Lovett finished with eight points, point guard Morgante had six to go with five rebounds and Noeth added four points.

Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce announces award winnes for 2014 The Greater Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce announces the winners of its 2014 community awards, which will be presented at its annual dinner on Thursday, March 19 at Naughton’s Johnson House. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. following social time commencing at 6:30 p.m. Peter and Nancy Neidrauer were nominated by Barry Nobles, President of the Lions Club of Churchville, and are the 2014 Citizens of the Year. In his nomination of the Neidrauers, Nobles describes all that the Neidrauers do in the Churchville community including not only working with the Lions Club but also with St. Vincent de Paul Church and Scout Pack 156. “As the winter starts to hit New York, they pack up their toolboxes and camper and head south to work with Habitat for Humanity, working with a team of volunteers from around the country. Together they build
homes for the needy in the southeastern United States,” said Nobles in his nomination. Pontillo’s Pizza will be receiving the Business of the Year honor. Receiving the award for Civic Beautification is the Churchville-Chili Central School District in recognition of the work that has been done on the many campuses of the school district. This year the Chamber of Commerce is recognizing Gary Johnson as the Chamber Member of the Year. Tickets for the dinner are $25 per person and may be purchased at the Riga Town offices, Churchville Village offices and Naughton’s Johnson House.
