Hilton Cadets win their first Section V title in 28 years by Warren Kozireski “I was just trying to serve it in and then anything can happen,” senior Simon Garno said of his chip on a direct kick from 30-yards out that redirected off a Fairport defender and into the net for what would prove to be the winning goal. That allowed Hilton to avenge their loss in the final to Fairport one year ago and earn their first boys soccer Section V championship since 1987 and just their second overall. After both teams played a chess match in the first half with few legitimate scoring opportunities, play opened up a bit in the second half. Just seconds after an apparent Hilton goal was called back due to off-sides, Michael Provost was fouled leading to Garno’s goal in the 51st minute. “I knew the next 21 minutes would be the longest of my life,” Garno said. The Red Raiders challenged just one minute after the Hilton goal, but a bullet shot sailed high. With the Cadets packing as many as seven players inside the 30, senior goalkeeper Brian Wilkin made a leaping save later in the half on a direct kick and was able to cover the rebound with just seven minutes remaining when another attempt hit the crossbar. Wilkin saved his best for the final minutes as he dove to his left to knock away a shot ticketed for the lower right side of the net with 2:10 to play. “We started off this season weak in the back, but with (assistant) coach (Brian) Duffy working with us, we got better as the season went on,” Wilkin said. “Everyone started sacrificing their bodies and we started getting shutouts.” “Our boys had last year’s game (against Fairport) fresh in their minds and they used it as motivation,” first year head coach Mike Ellicott said. “It

wasn’t the prettiest goal, but in the mass of confusion it skipped by their goalkeeper. “Most important is these guys did not concede a single goal in sectionals and Brian made some incredible saves - he dealt with some injuries early this season, but in sectionals he has been something special.” To reach the final, the Cadets beat Class AA topseed Webster-Thomas and fourth seed ChurchvilleChili 2-0 in the semi-finals. In that game, Jeffrey Hibbard fed Nicholas Simone a pass in the 20th minute. He took one step to his right around the defender and

found the back of the net. Hilton padded their lead at 56:55 as Hibbard sent a pass inside the 18 where the ball eventually came to Matthew DeFeo, who had virtually the entire net to shoot at. “As the eighth seed with a 6-9-1 record, nobody thought of us, but we used it to our advantage,” Garno said. “Our goal all year was to make it this far and there is no better feeling. So much hard work finally paid off and I was so happy running into the stands to celebrate with my classmates.”

Changes likely for Sweden Town Board following election by Kristina Gabalski Although town council and town supervisor races were too close to call following voting on Election Day, it appears the Sweden Town Board may have new faces come January and a mix of Republicans and Democrats. In unofficial results posted Wednesday, the Monroe County Board of Elections had incumbent Supervisor Robert Carges with 1,161 votes and challenger Annie Crane with 1,097 votes. Carges had the Republican, Conservative and Independence endorsements and Crane had the Democratic and Working Families lines. Incumbent Councilperson Don Roberts, Jr., who was seeking a second term, received 1,094 votes; newcomers Lori Skoog and Mary Rich received 1,174 and 1,117

votes respectively, and Peter Sharpe received 1,081 votes. Roberts and Sharpe had the Republican, Conservative and Independence endorsements and Skoog and Rich were endorsed by the Democratic and Working Families parties. On Wednesday, Lori Skoog told the Suburban News for now it is a waiting game. “As first time candidates, Annie, Mary and I did our best to run a fact based campaign and managed to get the attention of people in all parties. I believe this election has been a wake-up call. The residents have spoken and are no longer willing to accept the status quo ... regardless of who gets in office. There has been a disconnect between the board and the residents. It’s time for a change and we need to work together.” Supervisor Rob Carges expressed dismay at low voter turnout, which he said was about one-third of registered voters in the town.

He said it was a tough race (his seventh in town politics) and noted he had never before been so viciously attacked by an individual group (a political action committee). Despite his disappointment, Supervisor Carges said, “I will do my best to work with the new board members. It’s easy to throw stones until you have been there.” He said if the election does go to Skoog and Rich, serving on the Town Board will be an “eye opener” for them. “Just because you want to do something doesn’t mean it’s going to happen,” he says. Supervisor Carges says he has known Lori Skoog for fifty years, “she taught me art in middle school,” he noted. He said he tries to be accessible to residents by spending time at the town offices every day and being available by phone. “I don’t try to hide from people,” he said. “People can call me at home.”

Sophomore defender Shannon Donahue picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 78th minute to give Roberts Wesleyan a 2-1 victory over Dowling in the final game of the regular season. Donahue took a pass from midfielder Erica Lamb, onetouched a pass to her right and sent a 35 yard shot over the Golden Lions goalkeeper and just under the crossbar. Earlier Bella Mitrevski (Churchville) netted her 16th goal of the season in the 21st minute. After taking a pass from Courtney Hartnett outside the 18, her shot skipped under the diving Dowling goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Dowling had tied the contest in the 62nd minute before Donahue put her long shot over the keepers head for the game-winner. “It feels great,” Donahue said. “Defenders don’t usually score, especially the winning goal, so that’s nice. I think I scored once or twice in high school, so nothing crazy. And the last regular season game too.” “I had it (the ball) and saw that I had space, so I was thinking should I go long with it, but I heard everyone saying ‘shoot-shoot’, so I ripped it and luckily it went in.” “It wasn’t our best performance, but we knew what we had to do,” third year head coach Bobby McColl said. “The team has shown a lot of character toward the end of the season when games have been tough and we’ve been down or been tied. So proud of them for making the conference tournament for the first time. Being the second seed and hosting is a big achievement.”

In the second game of the doubleheader, junior Malcolm Shaw headed in cross from the left corner by Jake Zito with only ten seconds remaining in regulation to give the Redhawks men a 2-1 win and eliminate Dowling from the conference postseason. Less than three minutes after Dowling opened up a 1-0 first half lead, senior Garth Brungard headed in a pass from Taiwo Aderounmu for his fourth goal of the season. Roberts then dominated the second half with four legitimate scoring chances before Shaw netted his gamewinning tenth goal of the season. “To end up in fifth place out of 11 teams is pretty good—I’ll take that,” said head coach Scott Reber. “I think it’s (his first year as head coach) a good start; look for more of this coming in the future.” The women finished the regular season with an 11-4-1 record and the second seed for the East Coast Conference playoffs. The men, at 8-6-2 recorded the pair of wins on the final weekend, but did not get the help they needed from other teams and were awaiting a NCCAA postseason bid. Senior and Churchville-Chili grad Ellie Swan, Brittany Houghton, Miranda Colon (North Chili) and Heaven Palamitia were honored prior to their final regular season home game. For the men, goalkeepers Michael Scavone (credited with four saves in the contest) and Chris Matteson, Brungard, Zito and Michael McGinnis completed their collegiate careers.

Kendall’s perfect season ended by Warren Kozireski Kendall’s girls soccer team advanced to the Class C state play-in game after their first unblemished 19-0 record and their second consecutive Section V championship under their belt, but fell to Caledonia-Mumford 1-0 to end their state title dream. The Raiders controlled play for most of the first half, but Kendall turned the tables in the second, including almost ten full minutes of sustained offensive zone pressure but could not score. Cal-Mum finally did as they converted an indirect kick from just to right of the box that was knocked just inside the left post in the 73rd minute for what would prove to be the winning goal. Kendall last went through a regular season undefeated in 2003, but had one tie with 15 wins. The 2015 team set a school mark for regular season wins while earning the Section V title. The team allowed only three goals during the 16-game regular season and

none over their final six games entering the playoffs. The top-seeded Eagles defeated Campbell-Savona 6-0 in the quarterfinals with Maya Rutland scoring twice and Taylor ReQua finishing with one goal and three assists. They ran their shutout streak to eight consecutive games with a 1-0 win over fifth-seed Warsaw in the semi-finals with Maya Rutland scoring the only goal two minutes into the contest. They then defeated South Seneca 4-1 in the Class C2 final with ReQua, Hailee Mitchell and Taylor and Maya Rutland all scoring. “I have so much to be proud of this team and am so happy to have coached this group,” head coach Pam Beres said. “Cal-Mum played a physical style and won most of the balls in the air, which is not our strength.” The loss marked the second consecutive season Kendall has lost the state play-in game at Hilton after losing in 2014 to Avon.

An American experience by Joe Reinschmidt Recently my wife, Heide, and I were privileged to participate in a seven day trip to Nashville, Tennessee with the Hamlin Senior Citizens group. Under the capable leadership of Linda and Don Rabjohn, assisted by Eileen Preston, we enjoyed quite a variety of sights and sounds in “Music City” USA. Departing Hamlin at 8 a.m. on September 27, I recall the sound of a few voices including mine, attempting to sing the well known country song, “On the Road Again.” The guy really on the road was our capable driver, Don Saltsman, who we would learn had left home in Florida on August 20 and wouldn’t get back there until mid-October. He said it was his practice to volunteer for a few weeks driving up north each summer, but this year it got extended due to another driver having to back out for health reasons. In response to my question if there was better pay as opposed to shorter trips, he said no, but on these trips they are paid a salary every day, regardless of how much or how little they drive. After three or four short stops on the way, we arrived at our first overnight in a motel just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. Following breakfast in the morning we were on our way south again, crossing the Ohio River into Kentucky and then on to Tennessee where we stopped for several hours at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum. Among many items there was a Wall of Fame for people who were involved in research and development of Farming. One of them was a gentleman who created the first variety of field corn that would produce more than a single ear on each stalk. Then it was on to a hotel, a few miles north of Nashville which would be our home for the next four nights. A few hours later we were taken to a restaurant for dinner. The next day, our first event was a tour of the current Grand Ole Opry House, which seats 4,400 people, about double the size of the original Opry at the Ryman Theatre. Lunch was on our own at the Opry Mills, the largest outlet, dining and entertainment destination in Tennessee. From there we left with a step-on guide for a tour of Nashville and some of its environs, returning for dinner and departing at 6 p.m. for the Grand Old Opry Show. The following day we started with a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame which as expected had all sorts of items played, used, driven or worn by the CMA stars. Of special interest was information that showed the evolvement of Country Music from its origins in Blue Grass music created by settlers, based on the folk music of the countries they had come from which were mostly northern European. A recent addition was a section devoted to Sam Phillips (Sun) recording studios which produced many stars. Sam had a knack for recognizing basic talent in young performers and helped them develop it. That evening we enjoyed a delicious buffet and stage show at the Nashville Dinner Theater. The performers there were for the most part unknown to us but the consensus was that they were as good, or better than some at the Opry Show. A visit/tour of the Belle Meade Plantation Antebellum home was our first item the next morning. This plantation was instrumental in breeding and development of race horses but fell on hard times after many years, in part because Tennessee had prohibited betting on horse racing. Kentucky did not and horse breeding and development industry moved there. From there we went to historic downtown Nashville where we could explore on our own the many venues in an area known as “The District.” The success of this area is due at least in part to the city creating a 501c-3 tax exempt entity of the entire District that helps property owners maintain, improve and/or redevelop their sites. After a brief stop at the Willie Nelson & Friends General Store and Museum we were off to the Inn at Opryland for another great buffet dinner and show. Regardless of your background or interest in country music, the things we experienced told a lot about how our country evolved and became what it is today. Music played a big roll but the faith, fortitude, ingenuity and work ethic of its people were the drivers. It was truly a great American Experience.

Churchville American Legion Post launches fundraising campaign by Kristina Gabalski The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post Home in Churchville has been in continuous use in service to the Riga community and its veterans since the early 1950s, but members of the legion family team say the building “is beginning to show its age.” The Post #954 Home on Buffalo Road was built with funds donated by Mary Noone, in memory of her son, Harvey, who was killed in combat in France during World War I. “Repairs and associated expenses are on the increase,” Post Commander Gil Budd said. “We have taken a number of steps to

address the situation, including launching a fundraising campaign and preparing and submitting a regional grant application to the Home Depot Foundation. We were thrilled to hear a couple of weeks ago that we have been awarded $3,600 for necessary repairs.” The grant paid for replacement of wrought iron railings on front and back porches, replacement of stairs into the lower entrance, and the painting of various areas. Budd said the Home Depot Foundation works with local stores to arrange for Home Depot employees to help with the labor. For the Riga Post Home project, David Shoemaker has been the team leader/contact person. Work began in late October on the railing, stairs and painting project. The members of Harvey C. Noone Post are committed to preserving the integrity and value of the Post Home as part of their efforts to honor those who have unselfishly served our country, Budd said. To help accomplish that goal, the Post has launched an Action Plan which includes the establishment of a separate “Roof and Maintenance Fund.” The Post roof is in need of replacement and Budd says community help is needed to fund the project. “Given our history and mission of helping others, we began fundraising slowly, since we needed to come to terms with the idea that we needed to ask for assistance from others,” he says. “The Home Depot Foundation Grant and the generous support of our members to our internal appeal have given us the impetus to expand the fundraising appeal to the entire community and to look for creative ways to meet the challenges of addressing stewardship in the 21st century.” So far, over $4,000 has been raised in addition to the $3,600 grant from the Home

Donations to the Roof and Maintenance Fund through the “Let’s Raise the Roof Donor’s Club” are welcome and checks can be made payable to Harvey C. Noone Legion # 954. Please put ROOF in the memo section. Donations may be made in honor or memory of someone. Those who make a donation of $20 or more will be recognized for their support. Contributions are tax deductible and can be mailed to: Harvey C. Noone American Legion #954, 6444 Buffalo Road, Churchville, NY 14428. Budd said the Post Home has become the center of the Churchville/Riga community. “If it could only tell the tales of all

it has seen - blood drives, scout meetings, Legion and Auxiliary functions, weddings, carnivals, baseball games, SCOR (Senior Citizens of Riga) meetings, Breakfast with Santa, Memorial Day services, Veterans Luncheon sponsored by the ChurchvilleRiga Chamber of Commerce, dinners for veterans from the Batavia VA Hospital and on and on. Riga was founded on four pillars - agriculture, education, religion and patriotism; the Legion and its Post Home have contributed to the pillar of patriotism standing strong and tall into the 21st century.”

Initially most activities will occur from the top of the bridge deck so it is anticipated that there will be minimal impact on vessel traffic. Riga’s annual Halloween Parade thrilled the community On Halloween night the Town of Riga Recreation Department along with the Churchville Lions Club hosted their annual Halloween Parade for the community’s young “Trick or Treaters.” The parade started at the Churchville Commons led by the Churchville Fire Department’s fire truck and proceeded up Main Street to the Church Lodge in Churchville Park where they were treated to apples, cider and donuts. A candy corn guessing and costume contest also took place. All involved were thrilled that the youngsters got to participate in a safe and secure environment. A huge “Thank You” to the following people and organizations that continue to make this event memorable year after year: Lion Ruth Stewart; Assistant Recreation Supervisor Penny Sexton; the Churchville Lions Club; the Churchville Fire Department; the Churchville Fire Police; the Churchville Ambulance and the parents of all participants.
