Hilton Cadets win their first Section V title in 28 years by Warren Kozireski “I was just trying to serve it in and then anything can happen,” senior Simon Garno said of his chip on a direct kick from 30-yards out that redirected off a Fairport defender and into the net for what would prove to be the winning goal. That allowed Hilton to avenge their loss in the final to Fairport one year ago and earn their first boys soccer Section V championship since 1987 and just their second overall. After both teams played a chess match in the first half with few legitimate scoring opportunities, play opened up a bit in the second half. Just seconds after an apparent Hilton goal was called back due to off-sides, Michael Provost was fouled leading to Garno’s goal in the 51st minute. “I knew the next 21 minutes would be the longest of my life,” Garno said. The Red Raiders challenged just one minute after the Hilton goal, but a bullet shot sailed high. With the Cadets packing as many as seven players inside the 30, senior goalkeeper Brian Wilkin made a leaping save later in the half on a direct kick and was able to cover the rebound with just seven minutes remaining when another attempt hit the crossbar. Wilkin saved his best for the final minutes as he dove to his left to knock away a shot ticketed for the lower right side of the net with 2:10 to play. “We started off this season weak in the back, but with (assistant) coach (Brian) Duffy working with us, we got better as the season went on,” Wilkin said. “Everyone started sacrificing their bodies and we started getting shutouts.” “Our boys had last year’s game (against Fairport) fresh in their minds and they used it as motivation,” first year head coach Mike Ellicott said. “It

wasn’t the prettiest goal, but in the mass of confusion it skipped by their goalkeeper. “Most important is these guys did not concede a single goal in sectionals and Brian made some incredible saves - he dealt with some injuries early this season, but in sectionals he has been something special.” To reach the final, the Cadets beat Class AA topseed Webster-Thomas and fourth seed ChurchvilleChili 2-0 in the semi-finals. In that game, Jeffrey Hibbard fed Nicholas Simone a pass in the 20th minute. He took one step to his right around the defender and
found the back of the net. Hilton padded their lead at 56:55 as Hibbard sent a pass inside the 18 where the ball eventually came to Matthew DeFeo, who had virtually the entire net to shoot at. “As the eighth seed with a 6-9-1 record, nobody thought of us, but we used it to our advantage,” Garno said. “Our goal all year was to make it this far and there is no better feeling. So much hard work finally paid off and I was so happy running into the stands to celebrate with my classmates.”
Changes likely for Sweden Town Board following election by Kristina Gabalski Although town council and town supervisor races were too close to call following voting on Election Day, it appears the Sweden Town Board may have new faces come January and a mix of Republicans and Democrats. In unofficial results posted Wednesday, the Monroe County Board of Elections had incumbent Supervisor Robert Carges with 1,161 votes and challenger Annie Crane with 1,097 votes. Carges had the Republican, Conservative and Independence endorsements and Crane had the Democratic and Working Families lines. Incumbent Councilperson Don Roberts, Jr., who was seeking a second term, received 1,094 votes; newcomers Lori Skoog and Mary Rich received 1,174 and 1,117
votes respectively, and Peter Sharpe received 1,081 votes. Roberts and Sharpe had the Republican, Conservative and Independence endorsements and Skoog and Rich were endorsed by the Democratic and Working Families parties. On Wednesday, Lori Skoog told the Suburban News for now it is a waiting game. “As first time candidates, Annie, Mary and I did our best to run a fact based campaign and managed to get the attention of people in all parties. I believe this election has been a wake-up call. The residents have spoken and are no longer willing to accept the status quo ... regardless of who gets in office. There has been a disconnect between the board and the residents. It’s time for a change and we need to work together.” Supervisor Rob Carges expressed dismay at low voter turnout, which he said was about one-third of registered voters in the town.
He said it was a tough race (his seventh in town politics) and noted he had never before been so viciously attacked by an individual group (a political action committee). Despite his disappointment, Supervisor Carges said, “I will do my best to work with the new board members. It’s easy to throw stones until you have been there.” He said if the election does go to Skoog and Rich, serving on the Town Board will be an “eye opener” for them. “Just because you want to do something doesn’t mean it’s going to happen,” he says. Supervisor Carges says he has known Lori Skoog for fifty years, “she taught me art in middle school,” he noted. He said he tries to be accessible to residents by spending time at the town offices every day and being available by phone. “I don’t try to hide from people,” he said. “People can call me at home.”

tions, The Brockport Unitarian Universalists look to engage the entire community in meaningful ways and to invite deepening and diversity outside the traditional Sunday morning experience. “Supper, Song and Spirit” began as an experiment in community building in the winter of 2014. This “test drive” proved worthy and was awarded a significant Gilbert Spirit Fund Grant in June 2015 to continue development into the coming year. The Grant specifically aims at projects that address social concerns as well as the arts. From inception, “SSS” brings the best of community together, weaving interfaith relationships across the boundaries of class, race, gender and faith, with a shared meal, local music, story and dialog. The choice to locate “SSS” Supper, Song and Spirit at the Brockport Fireman’s Exempt, 248 West Avenue in Brockport on the third Fridays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. increased the possibility that diverse peoples within the community would seek out an opportunity to eat and sing together,

The Gilbert Spirit Fund grant provides monetary support to the artists. “SSS” runs on volunteer goodwill and is donation based. “Have a little, give a little ... Have a lot, give a lot” is the motto. One third of all proceeds go towards advancing social justice in this rural community. The sponsoring Brockport Unitarian Universalist Fellowship actively supports the Brockport Food Shelf, Clothing Shelter and BEOC. Rev. Opinion Roadblocks prevent the revitalization of a building in Brockport
UR Medicine Strong West staff and volunteers were honored at the Friends of Strong Memorial Hospital 2015 Celebration Luncheon on October 7. The annual event celebrates the work of stellar individuals across UR Medicine. Brockport native Jill Martin, Strong West Administration, received the Frances Brownell Supervisor Award; volunteer and Holley resident Paul Sugar the Dove Award; volunteers and Brockport residents Jack and Chris Mazzarella the Hettie Shumway Volunteer Role Model Award; and volunteer and Brockport resident Kristina Dube the Evening/Weekend Award. Provided information.
I am writing about an issue of great concern to me regarding the historical Whiteside Barnett Building, located at 60 Clinton Street in the Village of Brockport. The Village of Brockport lies within the Town of Sweden, therefore, a vote was taken by the Brockport School Board, the Village of Brockport and the Town of Sweden on whether or not to grant a tax abatement to a developer who was interested in preserving, renewing, and repurposing this gem of a building. In order to go forward with this tax abatement, which would have returned this building to the tax rolls gradually, over a ten year period, all three entities would have to vote “yes.” Apparently, the Town of Sweden Board does not care about preserving this one-ofa-kind building (the only surviving building of the local reaper manufacturing industry - where reapers were built and sold internationally). Sweden voted no, without sufficient cause. Over 100 people attended a Sweden Town Council meeting on 2/25/14 to express that they were in favor of granting the abatement; their wishes fell on deaf ears. A bit of history on this building will tell you how important it is to preserve it for future generations: •It was first built as the Brockport Agricultural Works in 1850 and 1852, at the dawn of the mechanized farming era •Later, it became known as the Whiteside Barnett Farm Implement Factory •It was a lumberyard from 1880-1904 and a cannery until 1945 •Later on, it became Fay’s Garage
•Most recently, the non-profit Greater Brockport Development Corporation purchased the building and completed extensive structural and roof repairs, as well as environmental remediation on the site. •It is now ready to be developed. There are three buildings with 10,000 total square feet. It sits on 1/3 of an acre of land and is a rare example of the brownstone buildings that once lined the canal. •It is made of Medina Sandstone and is listed on the National & State Registers of Historic Places. Possible uses that have been suggested for this building include: a small theatre; a restaurant with canal-side seating; residential and/or retail space, or affordable lodging; hosting special events or a museum ... it could be the beginning of the revitalization of our canal side - enjoyed by all, not only Village of Brockport residents, but also by Towns of Sweden and Clarkson residents as well as people far and wide. The hope is for it to become a ‘destination’ for area residents and travelers on the canal. There are almost 200 years of history to preserve here. Why would the Sweden Town Board not want this? It is beyond me. I believe that it is time for a change in the Town of Sweden government - to people who will consider not only what is worthwhile for the Town of Sweden but also for the Village of Brockport and surrounding area. Marcy Stickles Brockport
Gates senior runner Bruce Rychwalski, 66, was one of five local runners chosen to receive the Fleet Feet Sports/Mizuno Power of Running to Inspire Award. Opinion Looking for an answer to varied gas prices I think Clarkson Councilperson Pat Didas hit the nail on the head with his opinion letter in last week’s publication. The title was “Why are gas prices in Clarkson so varied?” This question has been a topic of conversation for years amongst Clarkson and Sweden residents alike. I thank Pat for bringing the question out into the spotlight through print media. However, since we have all been asking the same question, as an elected official, representing the residents of Clarkson, the responsible thing to do would be to find the answers. It’s a great first step to ask the owners of the gas stations publicly why they charge more in our town(s). To consumers it is highly suspicious that the businesses in both towns charge quite a bit more than the market price in neighboring towns. What I think we should do is challenge Councilperson Didas, and the remaining members of the town board(s), to investigate and pursue legitimate justification and report back to us, their constituents. Perhaps it’s reaching out to our state Assemblyman and Senator or the Attorney General. Maybe sending out an official letter to the owners requesting a legitimate response is warranted. Councilperson Didas asked the question that we’ve all been asking. Hopefully, he will take the initiative to get us some answers. Sheldon Meyers Brockport

Ricci sends top-seed Blue Devils to finals by Warren Kozireski Senior Alex Ricci scored exactly two minutes into the first overtime to allow Brockport to escape with a 2-1 boys soccer victory over Spencerport in the Class A1 semi-finals held at LeBeau Field in Hilton. The teams played scoreless through the first 40 minutes despite each threatening. Blue Devil Simeon Horton’s cross to Jason Hayes was headed just wide in the tenth minute and a shot from 30 yards out by Zachary Langelotti needed a diving saves by Rangers goalkeeper Connor MacKenzie to stay out of the net in the 34th minute. With the first half clock ticking off the final ten seconds of the half, a Spencerport corner kick by David DeBellis was headed by Nick Turnquist toward the goal, but dribbled along the goal line as the horn sounded. Ricci broke up the 0-0 duel just 1:04 into the second half as he picked up a loose ball at midfield, outraced the defender and put a bullet-shot from 30 yards out off the crossbar and into the net for a 1-0 Blue Devils lead. In the 59th minute, Brockport tried to pad their lead as Ricci fed a pass to Horton down the right wing, but MacKenzie came out of the net to challenge and made the save. Spencerport moved to a three-forward strategy late in an attempt to tie the game and had several chances. A pass from DeBel-
lis into the box was just out of the reach of Mike Caceci in the 64th minute before a shot by Evan Connoly that was ticketed for the upper corner was tipped wide by Brockport goalkeeper Joe McNulty. But with just 1:47 remaining in regulation, the Rangers finally converted. Joe Curtis passed to the scoring area where Caceci banged into the back of the net to tie the game and send it to overtime. “We stopped playing and tried to sit on our lead for 22 minutes,” Brockport head coach Chris Zorn said. “We mentally struggled in the second half and give Spencerport credit; they kept bringing the pressure, worked hard and kept at it.” Just two minutes into the sudden-victory overtime, Jonny Autenrieth headed the ball to Ricci, who headed it off the post and into the net for the game-winner. “We had to get back to laying our game in overtime,” Ricci said on the jubilant sideline. “We didn’t want to play two overtime (sessions), so we had to get the job done. “We’ve lost in the semi’s the last two years, so this is a good feeling. We put a good package together this year. Spencerport is a tough opponent and we were worried about their pressure, deadly throw-ins and long passes, but our D (defense) did a great job defending.”

by Warren Kozireski Kendall’s girls soccer team advanced to the Class C state play-in game after their first unblemished 19-0 record and their second consecutive Section V championship under their belt, but fell to Caledonia-Mumford 1-0 to end their state title dream. The Raiders controlled play for most of the first half, but Kendall turned the tables in the second, including almost ten full minutes of sustained offensive zone pressure but could not score. Cal-Mum finally did as they converted an indirect kick from just to right of the box that was knocked just inside the left post in the 73rd minute for what would prove to be the winning goal. Kendall last went through a regular season undefeated in 2003, but had one tie with 15 wins. The 2015 team set a school mark for regular season wins while earning the Section V title. The team allowed only three goals during
the 16-game regular season and none over their final six games entering the playoffs. The top-seeded Eagles defeated CampbellSavona 6-0 in the quarterfinals with Maya Rutland scoring twice and Taylor ReQua finishing with one goal and three assists. They ran their shutout streak to eight consecutive games with a 1-0 win over fifthseed Warsaw in the semi-finals with Maya Rutland scoring the only goal two minutes into the contest. They then defeated South Seneca 4-1 in the Class C2 final with ReQua, Hailee Mitchell and Taylor and Maya Rutland all scoring. “I have so much to be proud of this team and am so happy to have coached this group,” head coach Pam Beres said. “Cal-Mum played a physical style and won most of the balls in the air, which is not our strength.” The loss marked the second consecutive season Kendall has lost the state play-in game at Hilton after losing in 2014 to Avon.
Donahue, Shaw send Redhawk seniors home happy by Warren Kozireski Sophomore defender Shannon Donahue picked the perfect time to score her first collegiate goal, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 78th minute to give Roberts Wesleyan a 2-1 victory over Dowling in the final game of the regular season. Donahue took a pass from midfielder Erica Lamb, one-touched a pass to her right and sent a 35 yard shot over the Golden Lions goalkeeper and just under the crossbar. Earlier Bella Mitrevski (Churchville) netted her 16th goal of the season in the 21st minute. After taking a pass from Courtney Hartnett outside the 18, her shot skipped under the diving Dowling goalkeeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead. Dowling had tied the contest in the 62nd minute before Donahue put her long shot over the keepers head for the game-winner. “It feels great,” Donahue said. “Defenders don’t usually score, especially the winning goal, so that’s nice. I think I scored once or twice in high school, so nothing crazy. And the last regular season game too.” “I had it (the ball) and saw that I had space, so I was thinking should I go long with it, but I heard everyone saying ‘shoot-shoot’, so I ripped it and luckily it went in.” “It wasn’t our best performance, but we knew what we had to do,” third year head coach Bobby McColl said. “The team has shown a lot of character toward the end of the season when games have been tough and we’ve been down or been tied. So proud of them for making the conference tournament for the first time. Being the second seed and
hosting is a big achievement.” In the second game of the doubleheader, junior Malcolm Shaw headed in cross from the left corner by Jake Zito with only ten seconds remaining in regulation to give the Redhawks men a 2-1 win and eliminate Dowling from the conference postseason. Less than three minutes after Dowling opened up a 1-0 first half lead, senior Garth Brungard headed in a pass from Taiwo Aderounmu for his fourth goal of the season. Roberts then dominated the second half with four legitimate scoring chances before Shaw netted his game-winning tenth goal of the season. “To end up in fifth place out of 11 teams is pretty good—I’ll take that,” said head coach Scott Reber. “I think it’s (his first year as head coach) a good start; look for more of this coming in the future.” The women finished the regular season with an 11-4-1 record and the second seed for the East Coast Conference playoffs. The men, at 8-6-2 recorded the pair of wins on the final weekend, but did not get the help they needed from other teams and were awaiting a NCCAA postseason bid. Senior and Churchville-Chili grad Ellie Swan, Brittany Houghton, Miranda Colon (North Chili) and Heaven Palamitia were honored prior to their final regular season home game. For the men, goalkeepers Michael Scavone (credited with four saves in the contest) and Chris Matteson, Brungard, Zito and Michael McGinnis completed their collegiate careers.

Ken DeRoller District 4 Orleans County Legislator paid for by committee for Ken DeRoller
In response to the national concern about mental health issues and the impact they have on student performance and school district climates, Holley Central School District has partnered with Orleans County Mental Health to offer a satellite office at Holley Middle School/High School (MS/HS) two days a week. Nicole Ashton, an Orleans County Mental Health Counselor, works out of the satellite office at Holley on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “This is a real boost for our side of the county to offer mental health services here,” said Holley Superintendent Robert D’Angelo. “This saves our families travel time to come here instead of Albion, plus it augments the services provided by our district’s counseling staff. By having the satellite office at the MS/HS, students can use the services provided to help them concentrate on their studies and be positive contributors in school. This new service opportunity also encourages our parents to further engage with the district on students’ academic issues.” Since October 7, Ashton has begun to make assessments of students, offer counseling appointments and give referrals to other mental health professionals to help address the needs of students and their families. Students are referred to her by Holley faculty and staff or a parent/guardian request. After receiving the referral or request, she begins the process by obtaining parent/guardian permission and insurance information, then scheduling an hour-long initial assessment. Once the assessment is complete, she works with the student’s schedule to make regular appointments. For appointments scheduled after school, students can utilize the 5 p.m. bus for a ride home. “The school district support here in Holley is amazing,” said Ashton. “I have been welcomed by the students and staff. The district personnel have been helpful with providing information on students and tracking their progress. I’m here to serve the needs of the students and families, so I try to be flexible to set appointments with the hours and days that fit their schedules.” Ashton has a Master’s degree as a Licensed Master Social Worker and a Bachelor’s degree in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling. Ashton is a Holley alumnus and worked as an intern for Holley MS/HS Social Worker Samantha Zelent when she was pursuing her master’s degree. “She built such great connections with the kids when she was here,” said Zelent.

Mariners are advised that repair activities will occur on the Gillett Road Bridge (E-173) over the Erie Canal from now through the end of the navigation season. Initially most activities will occur from the top of the bridge deck so it is anticipated that there will be minimal impact on vessel traffic. Mariners should reduce speed, stop all forward motion and proceed at a “No-Wake” speed when transiting this area. A map showing the affected area can be found at www. canals.ny.gov/navinfo/charts/nyscce14.jpg. Features along the western portion of the Erie Canal are listed by mileage at www.canals.ny.gov/navinfo/ navinfo.cgi?waterway=eriewestern. For updates and information, visit Canals.NY.gov. Heel the Heroes ... The Journey of a Marine and his Dog by Tami Raco
S R O UTDO
O
When Military Service Personnel come back from war with all limbs intact and no visible scars or wounds, we often overlook the toll of their service on their heart, soul and mind. This is what they call the “invisible wounds” of war. Rochester native, Lyndon Villone, a brave young man, decided at the age of 19 to help defend our country’s freedom and join the fight with “The War on Terror.” He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 and served four years active duty as an Amphibious Assault Crewman. Lyndon served two tours in Fallujah, Iraq. He returned home and faced the challenges of adjusting back into the civilian world. He began to experience the repercussions of managing the impact of war and the effects it had on not only himself but also the way it affected his brothers in arms. Lyndon’s struggles led him down paths of substance abuse, trouble with the law, alienating those who loved and cared for him and ultimately a dark road of lonely self destruction. In the early part of 2011, a time when Lyndon began facing some of his toughest days, he took in a Siberian husky puppy. Initially this puppy only served as a way for Lyndon to make some money during his struggles. He planned to use this puppy to help with his financial burdens by selling him. One day Lyndon was singing the Marine Marching Cadence and the pup began to howl along with him. From that day forward Lyndon developed a special attachment to the young Husky pup. Some days Lyndon’s depression had him so recluse and uninterested in life that this pup became the only reason why Lyndon would get up. He would have to get up to feed him, exercise him and care for this young pup. This helped Lyndon pull through some of his hardest days of life. Little did Lyndon know this puppy came to him with a much greater purpose in his life. In a short time, Lyndon developed a close bond to the husky and he ultimately became a significant part of Lyndon’s recovery. The husky was named Ice, in honor of one of Lyndon’s closest friends, Sgt. Wesley Rice. Sgt. Rice lost his life days before Ice was born, in a military training accident. This loss was one of many that Lyndon would be facing in the upcoming years where his struggles became serious. During this same year Lyndon was formally diagnosed with PTSD by the V.A. At this time he did not have the tools to manage or fully understand what he was facing. His struggles continued but he was not alone. He surprisingly found companionship and support from Ice. This canine provided an element of grounding and calming to Lyndon’s tormented spirit. Lyndon’s journey of hardship was very similar to what other returning servicemen/women were facing. The invisible wounds of war, the PTSD complications, the substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and self-destruction were something many men and women faced after their military service. What was different about Lyndon was that he began to find healing in the relationship he had with Ice. This also led Lyndon to begin Therapeutic Horse back riding at the EquiCenter. Lyndon
found his happiest days were those that he spent with the horses and with his canine companion Ice. “At those times when I was with Ice and the horses, I felt my best,” said Lyndon. After experiencing the healing benefits from this type of therapy, Lyndon began to volunteer at the EquiCenter and also trained Ice as a Therapy Dog. In September of 2012 Lyndon and Ice successfully passed the tests and Ice was certified as an official Therapy Dog. He and Ice volunteered throughout the Rochester area providing therapy dog services. Lyndon found this type of work to be most rewarding. November 2012, Lyndon was about to face one of his most painful losses. Sgt. Chris Sawyers, who served and roomed with Lyndon, lost his life to suicide. This was Lyndon’s sixth close loss of a Marine Corps brother. This took him into one of his most painful emotional places. But at this place of grief, pain and darkness, the idea of Heel the Heroes was born. In the United States, 22 Veterans commit suicide every day. Lyndon was empowered to help heal the invisible wounds of other Veterans by using the healing powers of canine and equine therapy. The goal of Heel the Heroes is to help Veterans turn their lives around. In 2013 Lyndon took his idea to Syracuse University to the Entrepreneurs Boot Camp for Veterans program. This is where he learned how to implement his business plan and how to launch this non profit organization to help Veterans who face similar challenges. His dream was becoming a reality. Heel the Heroes is a non-profit organization that is an all-inclusive retreat for Veterans who struggle with PTSD. This retreat will be at no cost to the veteran and will provide canine therapy, equine therapy, as well as therapy from other modules such as music, yoga, art and counseling services. The programs are designed to help Veterans hit their reset button. It is also geared at providing them tools they can bring home to better manage their triggers. Each Veteran will leave with not only the tools but also a short term and long term plan with goals and accountability. Many will be eligible to have their very own Therapy Dog. In 2014 Lyndon left the Greece area to begin to establish this retreat near San Antonio, Texas. The location was chosen for several reasons. The climate allows the program to be operational year round as well as being in one of the most populated areas for wounded veterans in the country. The township where Lyndon began this - Schertz, Texas - was just named the “Purple Heart City.” Lyndon is keeping close ties to the Greece community through various Veteran outreach programs as well as the Greece American Legion where he was just named as a Guest of Honor at its Annual Wounded Warrior Concert. Heel for Heroes is volunteer run and supported 100 percent exclusively by donations. The new organization is beginning their first official Fund Raising Campaign in November 2015. Part of the proceeds from this fundraiser will help bring local Veterans to his Heel the Heroes Retreat in the fall of 2016. Notice of Formation of Pizza Ninja Master, LLC
Opinion Justices commit to training, service A recent opinion piece in this newspaper (11/1/15) concerned me because it seemed like an inaccurate or unfair representation of the history of the court’s creation or of its new judges. At one point I (among several persons of different backgrounds) considered being a justice candidate. For family reasons, eventually I decided not to run. However, I did research village courts as part of my decision making process. Some of what I learned is below. Process: Over a year of careful study went into the decision to create a Village Court. The decision to proceed represented an attempt to deal with problems within the Sweden Town Court and obtain revenue for the village which bore the costs of a major Town revenue producer, the Brockport Police Department. The village board vote to create a village court went without challenge so a referendum was not required. Additional efforts to set up the court and find justice candidates ensued. Justices: The majority of Village and Town justices are lay people, a tradition going back hundreds of years to English roots. Many lay judges also have served the Town of Sweden. These positions are part time; come with relatively low compensation and entail being on call 24/7. While attorneys may be preferable, given the foregoing, that is not the reality. Consequently there is an extensive state required training program comprised
Sweden Town Court serves the community I respectfully disagree with Mayor Blackman’s comments in the October 18 edition of the Suburban News regarding justice court in our community. The Town of Sweden’s judges have impeccable credentials and integrity; the Sweden Court staff is hard-working and honest. To imply that they were not doing their jobs or not doing their jobs well is inaccurate. Yes, the New York State Comptroller audit found some minor errors and recommended some procedural changes, all of which were put in place immediately. I remind Mayor Blackman of the most recent NYS Comptroller’s audit of the Village of Brockport, which also found multiple errors and recommended procedural changes. That’s what audits do, that’s why we have them - to find and correct mistakes. As to collecting parking ticket fines, for the past several years the Village employed collection agencies to pursue unpaid parking tickets, as is their responsibility. The collection agencies were quite successful in pursuing unpaid tickets - that’s what collection agencies do. The Sweden Town Court did what courts are supposed to - administer justice without prejudice. As a village resident, I sincerely hope that the Village Court was not formed as an alternative parking ticket collections agency. Justice courts serve a higher purpose. Mayor Blackman may also discover that operating a justice court is not a profit-making endeavor. Rob Carges, Sweden Supervisor
of a week of classes held in Albany and ongoing at home distance learning. Yearly update sessions are required of all judges and all have recourse to a Court Resource Center where they can consult with attorneys. Plus, new justices have mentors. Patronage: These are not patronage jobs. Anyone who wishes can run for justice court. The two who eventually ran and were elected to office have a demonstrated interest in and dedication to community service. Facilities: The ideal solution is for Town and Village to share space like Geneseo and Fredonia do. Unfortunately the Town was not amenable to that repeated request hence the need for a location meeting current state court criteria for space and security. The Village hall location was recommended by the NYS Office of Court Administration as the best solution. I personally think our hardworking mayor and board members deserve kudos for the amount of effort and thought put into this endeavor. They are truly doing what they think best for their constituents. As far as I know, the new court is functioning very well and Brockport residents have the justice they deserve.

Sigillo Chiropractic Sciatica and Pregnancy
Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C.
During pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through many changes. Obviously, it’s a wonderful time in a woman’s life. But it’s also a challenging time. Extra weight brings a shift in the center of gravity. This causes new sensations, and, in some cases discomfort.
One of the more common complaints during pregnancy is a condition called sciatica, a sharp, shooting pain that starts in the buttocks and radiates down the leg into the calf and sometimes all the way down to the foot. The pain is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve, which, at roughly the diameter of a finger, is the largest nerve in the body. Pregnancy-related sciatica generally develops in the second or third trimester, when the baby is approaching its peak weight. Chiropractic treatment, including massage, can be effective in easing the discomfort. Among steps a woman can take to minimize the likelihood of developing sciatica is wearing sturdy, supportive shoes - flats, or those with a small heel. These shoes are helpful in keeping a pregnant woman’s weight balanced. It’s also helpful to avoid sitting for long periods. Sleeping on a firm mattress is also important for supporting your back. Talk with your chiropractor for other recommendations on treatment or lifestyle adjustments you can make to avoid or get some relief from pregnancy-related sciatica.
