Gordy Fox honored by historical society and the college’s alumni group Latest volunteer service: “Little Free Libraries” by Doug Hickerson On the morning of our interview, Gordy Fox worked on the front stairs of the Morgan-Manning House on Brockport’s Main Street. Asked about the finished project, he said he replaced a rotted post. In the thorough fashion he is known for, he created a post of fine cedar with two coats of oil base primer and exterior paint, to last much longer than the first. Recently, the fruits of his craftsmanship have been seen in two “Little Free Libraries” in the village. At MorganManning House the Little Free Library represents the historic Carriage House on the grounds. The Little Free Library on the college campus represents the historic Normal School which stood for decades and was torn down in 1938-39 to be replaced by the present Hartwell Hall in the same location. The Normal School model will soon be located near the Alumni House which is in front of Hartwell Hall. (It has been temporarily on display at Drake Memorial Library.) There are over 36,000 Little Free Libraries around the world in a movement to promote literacy and the love of reading, as well as build a sense of community through free book exchanges. The little libraries are basically outdoor book cases with glass doors in various styles and sizes. Serving local areas, they are neighborly offerings where visitors may freely borrow and/or exchange books. There are Little Free Libraries spotted all around greater Brockport. The two built by Gordy are unique, designed as buildings related to the institutions where they are located. These two mini-buildings are built to scale, with fine architectural details copied, and paint very closely matching the red Carriage House and the Normal School’s red sandstone. As with the porch post, the same quality cedar and coats of paint keep them durable outdoors. The college’s free library came first, after Virginia Campbell of “Friends of Drake Library” asked Gordy if he would replicate the Alumni House. It was not possible, Gordy said, because he needed enough flat surface to create a door and space for books. Next, when Hartwell Hall was suggested, it had the needed spaces but creat-
ing the dome was prohibitive. Finally, in a “’Goldilocks” just-right ending, photos of the Normal School showed sufficient spaces on the wings of the building. The smaller inside wings could hold paperbacks and the outside wings could hold larger hardback books. He made a Styrofoam model which received the go-ahead from the Friends of Drake Library. At the Morgan-Manning House, the historic house itself was the first choice to reproduce. But, with no flat spaces where the prominent front view was desired, it would not work. The Carriage House proved just right with its long side having space for the library door and showing features of the building. The Little Free Library is at the edge of the South Street sidewalk on the Morgan-Manning House lawn. No job is too big or too small for Gordy as head of buildings and grounds at the historic home. In 2015 he supervised and worked on the major “Step Up!” project, priced at $25,000, to restore the sagging spiral stairs between the second and third floors. This undertaking capped over ten years of his maintaining the house and grounds, and serving as treasurer for eight years. For his service, the Western Monroe Historical Society board honored Gordy with the first-ever “Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award” at the 2016 celebration of the completed stairway project. And, he is currently serving as vice president of the Society’s board. Gordy (Gordon A. Fox) is a 1966 graduate of the College at Brockport. He taught high school biology at Hilton for 32 years, retiring in 1998. During his summers off he repaired and painted houses, shingled roofs, and eventually did building projects such as finished basements. He also learned to make fine furniture. In retirement, he made model ships from hardwood kits. And, in a year-and-a-half project, he crafted a 17-foot kayak out of - Yes, cedar. As durable and dependable as the wood he chooses, Gordy’s volunteer labor is receiving another honor at this year’s College at Brockport Homecoming. For all his years of work at the Morgan-Manning House and his building of the Normal School Little Free Library, the College at Brockport Alumni Association is honoring him as the “Alumnus of the Year for Community Volunteerism.” With his two Little Free Libraries completed, he does

It will eventually be mounted outside the Alumni House which is in front of Hartwell Hall on the campus. The model is 67 inches long, 22 inches high to the peak of the roof, and 12 inches deep. He is staying put in the place he is devoted to, planning to make special display cases for artifacts in the Morgan-Manning House. Brockport approves Megan Dix memorial by Kristina Gabalski Brockport Village Board members October 2 gave their approval for a proposed memorial in remembrance of shooting victim Megan Dix to be located at the rear of the South Avenue parking lot between a wooded area and the railroad tracks. Linda Kruger of the Brockport Lowe’s store where Dix worked, again spoke to trustees about the project. She said since the Village Board’s last meeting on September 18, she has received positive response from many residents regarding the project. “I’ve been approached by members of the community who really want to have a memorial ... where the community can come together,” Kruger told trustees. She said Dix’s death shook the Brockport community and that the memorial - which includes a bench, pavers, and flowering plants - would be a place for people to come, honor Dix’s memory and heal. Kruger said she has received the consent of Dix’s family to proceed with the project. Village Board members discussed issues such as ownership of the land and gas and water lines which run through the area. Kruger reported that a fence may be included behind the sitting area, where mementoes could be placed. Kruger said she plans to install the garden next spring with a dedication ceremony to be held in the late spring or early summer. She said she hopes to get College at Brockport students and students at Brockport Central Schools involved in the installation and maintenance of the garden memorial. In other business, the village board voted to refer the issue of allowing urban/backyard chickens in the village to the code review committee. The current village code does not allow for the keeping of urban chickens, but a group of residents last month approached the board asking for a change in the code that would allow them to keep chickens. Mayor Margaret Blackman said resident Erica Linden is researching local codes and will present a proposed draft of code changes regarding the keeping of backyard chickens. Trustee Kathy Kristansen expressed concern that the code review committee is currently at work completing a review of all codes in the village codebook. She said the chicken proposal should, “not be given to them until they finish their task on the codes.” The board passed the resolution after wording was added stating that the committee would take up the backyard chicken issue after completing the code review. Kristansen said the committee will likely wrap up their code review task by late November or early December. Village trustees also adopted a local law to establish Community Choice Aggregation program in the village of Brockport. They additionally named an administrator for the program and authorized Mayor Blackman to sign a Municipal Energy Services Agreement. Mayor Blackman said the new law will empower local government to determine the source of electric and natural gas supplies for residents and small businesses. National Grid or Rochester Gas & Electric would still deliver the supply, but the source is negotiated, she explained. Residents and small businesses are, “automatically opted-in ... and can opt-out at any time with no fee,” Mayor Blackman said. Large businesses have the option of opting-in if they choose. Westchester County is the model for community choice aggregation (CCA), Mayor Blackman noted. Electric rates there have been lowered 5.5 to 10.5 percent and 70 percent of customers have opted for renewable energy. Joule Assets/The Rochester People’s Climate Coalition will now request aggregated and customer specific data and competitively solicit suppliers for the aggregated demand for electricity and/or natural gas for the village. Mayor Blackman said a minimum of 20,000 households is required for a CCA program to function, meaning the village will enter into an inter-municipal agreement with other local communities which have created a CCA program. She said those municipalities include the villages of Lima and Scottsville; the towns of Geneva, Pittsford and Irondequoit. The Town of Brighton is also considering a CCA program as is the City of Rochester, Mayor Blackman said. Deputy Mayor Bill Andrews noted that during a public hearing held September 18 on the law, no one spoke out in opposition.

The Spencerport boys’ volleyball team. Photo provided by the Spencerport School District.
Rangers trying for first repeat in program history by Warren Kozireski Spencerport’s boys’ volleyball team has won five Section V championships, but they have never won in consecutive years. Led by four-year starter Josh Rabidoux, the Rangers defeated Churchville-Chili 25-23, 19-25, 27-25, 25-17 and are undefeated in division matches over the last four years. Tied 21-21 in the first game, Eric Jackson had two kills and Kiernan Crowley one over the final four points, Leading 16-9 in the second game, the Saints hung on for the win with the Rangers finishing on a 9-5 run down the stretch giving them some momentum heading into the third.
October 30, 2017 thru November 3, 2017
BRUSH ONLY! NO OTHER ITEMS TO BE PICKED UP! Starting Monday, October 30th and continuing thru November 3rd, the Town will pick up brush only. Only one pass will be made.
All residents must have the brush at roadside by Monday, October 30th at 7:00 AM. No brush to be placed prior to October 23rd. Brush must be no longer than eight (8) feet and piled parallel to the roadside. ––––– • ––––– If there are any questions, please call the Highway Department at 637-3369 or the Town Clerk at 637-2144 ––––– • –––––
Knotted 24-24, Rabidoux registered two kills and the winning point came on a net serve in the Rangers’ 27-25 win. And they built an 11-point lead in the final set, but Jackson had a pair of kills with Alex Caton and Rabidoux also adding kills down the stretch to secure the win. Rabidoux, the first All-Greater Rochester boys’ volleyball selection in 12 years and vying for tops for kills in Rangers history with 2001 grad Justin Waas, led with 18 kills in the contest. Jackson added 16 kills, Jaden Gillette had 17 assists and Nathan Hueber led with 17 digs. Caton added two blocks to go with his three kills with Josh Hubbard and Crowley combining for 11 kills. The Rangers previous Section V titles came in 1973, 1976, 1990, 2001 and 2016.
Reminder to Residents: For those residents wishing to dispose of brush throughout the year, the Town of Sweden will deliver a truck for overnight use to your residence for homeowners to load for disposal. There is no charge for this service. Because of time constraints, multiple drop-offs are discouraged. This service is not available for private contractors or residents utilizing private contractors for tree and landscaping services. Residents may also drop brush off at the highway garage during normal business hours. Please call 637-3369 for truck delivery or more information.

Cadets in unchartered waters by Warren Kozireski “We’ve had some teams that won sectional titles, but they had losing records and got hot at the right time—we’re back to the (19) 80’s and we can’t find any Hilton boy’s soccer team with the start this team has had and was undefeated at home,” Hilton head coach Mike Ellicott said about his team. The Cadets improved to 9-1-1 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Gates Chili at LeBeau Field. “This is a testament to their work. Two years ago we finished third and last year second, so this is a natural progression. We are in control of whether we are division champions or not and this team has earned it.” The Cadets took a 1-0 lead on the Spartans at 11:45 as Evan Pirnie’s corner kick from the right corner headed for the near
post where senior David Stirpe bodied it in the net. Hilton starting goalkeeper Joe Gombatto made a save on a shot from 25 yards out at the near post to thwart Gates Chili’s best scoring opportunity. The Cadets gave themselves some insurance as Pirnie sent a through-ball to Charles Barker, who put his shot inside the far post for a 2-0 lead at 70:15. Andrew Cavuoto played the final six minutes in net in sharing the shutout. Stirpe, Aaron Masters, Jared Gabriel and Ryan Petitti make up the all-senior defense that championship teams are built on. “Everyone was a part of this game, Ellicott said. “The whole bench trained and practiced hard and some saw their first varsity minutes, but it was nice to see there was no drop-off and they had an opportunity to shine.”
Ariloa leads Saints to fourth win by Warren Kozireski Senior Samantha Ariloa assisted on the first two goals to lead Churchville-Chili to a 3-1 victory over Irondequoit in girl’s soccer. With the Eagles holding the ball through the opening minute, Ariloa gained possession at midfield and fed a lead pass to sophomore Jade Distant down the right wing. She outraced the defense and struck a shot that hit the left post and deflected in for a 1-0 Saints lead just 1:13 into the contest. In the 19th minute, the Saints were awarded a direct kick in the offensive zone. Ariloa tapped a pass left to classmate Lily Cullen who found the upper left corner of the net for the goal. The Saints extended their lead to 3-0 in the final minute of the first half as sophomore Breanna Giacolone took the
ball in the right side of the box off an innocent throw-in and chipped a ball over the defense and goalkeeper and into the net at 39:38. “It’s coming along; they’re trusting each other,” Saints head coach Mimi Rague said. “We told them to win the 50-50 balls and they stepped up and did that.” Irondequoit broke up the shutout bid in the 51st minute when the defense dropped off a bit, but they reversed that trend the rest of the contest to preserve the win. Senior Skylar Burgess started the game in goal for Churchville-Chili and made seven saves with Gabby D’Ambrosio entering at halftime and being credited with four saves. The Saints entered their final week-anda-half of the regular season fighting for an eighth seed or higher for the Section V playoffs, which would give them a first round home game.

mixed materials including sage-colored siding, stone and stained wood. “It was not an easy project,” Mayor Barclay explained. The building contained two open basements and had not been in use for years. “We had great teamwork in place,” Mayor Barclay said, and thanked village employees and DPW Supervisor Gary Zawodzinski as well as the Village office staff including administrator/clerk/treasurer Cortney Gale for their work and dedication in seeing the project through. “Their efforts certainly came to fruition here in this building,” she said. Jay Grasso from Senator Ranzenhofer’s office, attended the dedication. He said the renovation of the building was a great project. “They took something that many said should be torn down and repurposed it for the good. The Village of Bergen has stepped forward and shown great projects to the senator.” The Sage Pavilion is named for the village’s first mayor, W. Monroe Sage, who is buried in nearby Mt. Rest Cemetery, Mayor Barclay said. “We dedicate (the pavilion) to Bergen families and friends who will meet and celebrate in this place,” she said.
Thanks to thoughtful foresight and lots of hard work, the Village of Bergen has successfully “up-cycled” it’s former water pump/DPW building into an attractive, welcoming all-season shelter for community use. The project was taken on to, “grow our sense of place in Bergen ... and encourage others to visit our village,” Bergen Mayor Anna Marie Barclay said during a dedication ceremony/ribbon cutting at the Sage Pavilion Thursday, September 28. The renovation of the building - a former eyesore at the entrance to Hartland Park and the village’s disc golf course - was part of the village’s Parks Master Plan, Mayor Barclay said. The village wanted an all-season pavilion, she explained, but was unsuccessful at obtaining grant funding to help cover the cost of building something new. Following a “walk and talk,” in which the walkability of the village of assessed, local leaders took a second look at the building, which had become run-down, and decided to explore the possibility that the building could be renovated to serve as an all-season shelter. The Sage Pavilion is located along a walking trail (off South Lake Avenue/Route 19) that connects Hartland Park to Hickory Park (just across Route 19) and the entire village. Parking is also readily available adjacent to the building. State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer was able to obtain a $100,000 SAM Grant for the project, and village workers completed the extensive renovation work which includes modern bathrooms, a patio area and a covered portico entrance with a modern, mission-style vibe. that effort. Over the years we’ve had a great time, collected hundreds of pounds of candy, given away door prizes, and awarded prizes for the best adult and child costumes. One year, Time Warner News even came to video our event and aired a nice report about it. This year we will be collecting Candy at our office Monday through Thursday during the first two weeks of November from 8 AM to 5 PM. The troops also need personal items like disposable razors, chapstick, AA batteries and deodorant which we can ship as well. We’ll be posting more information here, on our website and Facebook over the next few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has made this such a successful event each year. We are located at 42 Public Square, Holley and can be reached at 638-5435.
For the past 10 years we’ve marked Halloween by helping kids cut back a little on their Halloween candy consumption while also offering them a way to help support our troops overseas. During the week after Halloween we’ve invited kids of all ages to our office for a “Candy Buy Back” where they can exchange any unwanted Halloween candy for $1 per pound. Every child who participates receives a new toothbrush and several other goodies. In recent years we’ve also had lots of adults drop off their left over candy as well. All candy collected (along with toothbrushes and toothpaste) is forwarded to Operation Gratitude where it is included in special care packages and sent to individual servicemen and women overseas. Operation Gratitude has now sent over 1.6 million packages and we’re proud to have been a part of

Participating Providers:
A new Gallup-Palmer survey that tested public assumptions about chiropractic care discovered that a lack of knowledge about health insurance coverage for chiropractic care and sensitivity toward costs may be preventing some adults Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. in the United States from using chiropractic services. Nearly half of U.S. adults reported not knowing whether their insurance plans covered chiropractic care. In addition to uncertainty about insurance coverage, the survey found that perceptions about the cost of chiropractic care could also be a factor preventing some individuals from seeking it. About four in 10 adults in the United States were found to believe chiropractic care is too expensive and requires too many visits. However, recent studies have supported chiropractic’s cost-effectiveness in comparison to other forms of treatment. Misperceptions about cost and expected number of visits could be barriers to some adults considering the use of chiropractic services. In fact, most insurance plans cover chiropractic services to some extent, making treatment more accessible and affordable than some may have previously thought. In addition, the conservative, non-drug approach of chiropractic services should make economic sense for patients preferring to avoid not only more expensive - but also riskier - approaches to pain, such as prescription drugs and surgery, Presented as a service to the community by

Joe’s Stories, some old, some new and mostly true: Wind, rain and fire by Joe Reinschmidt These elements of nature had a devastating effect on our country in recent weeks. The damages will take years to recover from. While the physical features can be repaired/ rebuilt, the tragic loss of lives and debilitating injuries can’t be recovered. The media in general kept us informed of the extreme wind and water damage in some southern states. We also saw and heard stories of heroic acts, daring rescues and selfless aid given to those who lost everything. The media did make occasional references to the forest fires in some western states but little detail was included. Our son, Peter, who lives in Thompson Falls in western Montana, made us aware of that. His area had several fires going and at one time there was a “prepare to evacuate” notice given. It never became necessary to leave, but dense smoke made it difficult to breathe and limited visibility. Another source of information was our son-in-law Don, a New York state DEC employee who is also a volunteer forest fire fighter. Don traveled to Montana with a crew of 20 from New York State, joined by 80 other volunteers from several eastern states. When the U.S. Forest Service requests this type of aid, they often don’t know exactly where they will be deployed, as it usually is an ever changing situation. Actual decisions are made after the crews arrive in Missoula, Montana. The forest service assigns a name to each fire usually based on its location or the particular National Forest where the fire is.
On this occasion it was decided the New York crew would be sent to a fire in the Kootenia National Forest in the extreme northwest corner of Montana. Their specific location was near Eureka, a small town about seven miles from the Canadian border. The crew was assigned mainly to containment and mop up operations often involving extinguishing small new fires or lingering fires burning in tree stumps or dense brush areas. For several days they worked at night since those hot spots or new fires are easier to locate when it’s dark. On August 31, as their two week tour was ending, they returned to Missoula for the flight home. About that same time, a fire a few miles west of Eureka was intensifying in an area that is home to one of the oldest Amish settlements in Montana. On September 2 that fire made a run of four and one-half miles in just a few hours. It destroyed 11 homes and about 30 outbuildings. Veteran fire fighters told the community that in an entire career they had never seen a fire run like that one. Andy, his wife, Caroline, and their three children, an Amish family, were among those who received a pre-evacuation notice and one day later a frantic mandatory evacuation order. Andy hitched up the horses, put his wife and family in the buggy and sent them down the only road in or out of the area, with the fire’s roar and 200 feet high flames coming their way. He and his brother followed with a wagon loaded with some of their belongings. The brothers then returned to try and finish setting up a sprinkler system around the house but left when the Sheriff ’s deputies urged
them to get out. Reportedly the fire roared through less than an hour after they left. When they were allowed to return, he found their year old 40 by 80 feet barn and apartment had been totally destroyed but the lean to where they kept their buggy, about 50 feet away, was untouched by the fire. In an interview with a local reporter, Andy, in typical Amish fashion said, “So when we are up there looking at all the fire had done and all of a sudden out in the middle of all this a home is still standing - we rejoice. That is a symbol of hope and we pray for the family that can come back to their home. This same family will cry and pray with us because we lost ours, but we also rejoice for what we still have. There has been no life lost and our families are still with us. The losses were things that can be replaced - family can’t. Amish or not, we always come together to help each other, so this is just going to strengthen the whole community.” Until they can rebuild a livable structure, Andy’s family is living in a vacation cabin which a Canadian family offered them for as long as necessary. Several other families are also using vacation cabins made available by their owners. Knowing about all the devastation around the country, one can’t help but be grateful for things that didn’t happen here. Yes, we had damaging winds and rain more that desired or needed. Despite our complaints, Western New York is a good place to live and we sometimes believe we are in control of things.

politically speaking Penders announces candidacy for Clarkson Town Justice Over the past few weeks, I have been out meeting with each of you and I have been overwhelmed by the kindness shown to me by the community. I am seeking the office of Clarkson Town Justice because I believe I have the experience, credentials and values this community deserves. After attending Brockport High School and graduating from The College at Brockport, I earned my law degree from Albany Law School and returned home to practice law in our community. I am currently a practicing attorney and I have appeared in every court in Monroe County as well as outlying counties. I know my way around the courtroom and more importantly, I know the law. Criminal and civil procedure continues to grow more complex and should not be navigated by those without the proper legal training. This comes at a considerable cost to individuals’ rights and could cost tax payer dollars if not handled properly. I am the only attorney in this race and I would be proud
to serve in the position of Town Justice. I became an attorney because I have a strong passion for the law and I believe that our judicial system is the finest in the world. My years of legal education and experience will serve me well in this capacity. Furthermore, my experienced running mates have welcomed me into their campaign as we share similar values and understand the importance of serving the Town of Clarkson. I wholeheartedly believe Paul Kimball, Patrick Didas, Allan Hoy and Robert Viscardi will continue to serve Clarkson with the same vigor and passion they have shown in the past. I hope to add to this team by bringing my legal experience to the Bench. Thank you for considering me for Clarkson Town Justice on November 7.

Ian Penders Candidate for Clarkson Town Justice
There is no substitute for an open mind, fair dealing and personal integrity Allyn Hammel has served the Town of Clarkson in a professional, highly competent manner as our Town Justice for sixteen years. When I learned Judge Hammel would be retiring at the end of his current term, I wondered who would seek to take his spot on the Clarkson bench. I knew he enjoyed a well-earned reputation for fairness and sound decision making. I gave considerable thought to the challenge of succeeding Judge Hammel. After some time, I decided I wanted to take on that challenge. Although I have only lived in Clarkson for the past year, I was a resident of Brockport for twenty-two years. My wife and I watched our four children all grow to adulthood in this area. More importantly, I believe I can bring years of experi-
ence to the position that are only acquired through life lessons. I am sixty years old and retired from the IBM corporation after 36 years of employment. During those years I learned how to resolve problems and deal with all types of people. I know there is no substitute for an open mind, fair dealing and personal integrity. I believe I can bring those qualities to the position of Town Justice. If elected, I will take on the responsibility of being a well prepared and well educated town justice. I believe that the day any of us stops learning is the day we stop living. I will bring that philosophy with me if I am fortunate enough to be elected. Peter Selig Candidate for Clarkson Town Justice

Deficits can change under the right leadership My name is Samantha Golden and I am a candidate for Clarkson Town Board on the Common Ground, Democratic and Working Families line. Our town is stuck in a time warp. Because of poor future planning, we are losing our rural character, the charm that brought me to Clarkson almost 20 years ago. The Comprehensive Plan, our roadmap for future development, has not been addressed since 2008. Side roads are not maintained properly, our parks are underutilized and are in disrepair, and the recent larcenies and vandalism have led my family to feel less safe in our own home. Zombie homes litter our neighborhoods, creating hazards for first responders. Code enforcement is not applied uniformly. Residents resoundingly feel that their concerns are ignored. Your elected officials should work for you and represent the interests of all the residents of Clarkson, not just the chosen few.
It’s time for a change I’m Theresa Alano and I’m running for Clarkson Town Council, along with Common Ground slate members: Samantha Golden (Town Council) and Jerry Underwood (Town Supervisor). We are running because we feel it is time for change. I work hard, but I value family first. I’ve been married to Lou Alano for sixteen exciting years. I’m a retired Postmaster. I have experience managing offices as large as Webster and as small as Hamlin. I’ve worked in Labor Relations; conducted Management Investigations of ethics misconduct, served as a union steward, and worked side-by-side with unions to implement change. I’m a quilter and a kayaker. Essentially, I’m like any other Clarkson Town resident with faith, hobbies and home to keep me busy. I think it’s time for improvements and innovations. For example, our parks could be better utilized; our library is in dire need of financial stability, our town has numerous foreclosed “zombie” houses that are eyesores and safety hazards, and according to the Office of the State Comptroller, the town budget needs to be reviewed because it is repeatedly unrealistic and causes “unused appropriated fund balances.” We at Common Ground believe that thirty-four years of one Town Supervisor is enough, and votes that most often end with “unanimously carried” and a very rare “nay” do not always represent our community. We can’t make a difference, if voters don’t get out and vote during this off-year election. Please put November 7 on your calendars now, then vote for Common Ground. Theresa Alano Candidate for Clarkson Town Council
I believe these deficits can change, under the right leadership. As a graduate of the Nelson E. Rockefeller School of Public Affairs and Policy at SUNY Albany, I am equipped to bring a wealth of experience in the political arena as well as knowledge in grant writing to secure funds for infrastructure, recreation, and to increase services, while keeping taxes low. Our town leaders have been asleep at the wheel. We need to address this complacency to build a better Clarkson. If elected, I promise to work for you, not the party bosses. Fresh faces bring fresh ideas. I would appreciate your support on November 7. Samantha Golden Candidate for Clarkson Town Board
