2015 marks special anniversaries for local skydiver by Kristina Gabalski For Spencerport native Brian LeSchander, things have come full-circle in a remarkable way. LeSchander is marking his 40th anniversary as a skydiver and his 60th birthday this year and was able to celebrate the milestones by making a jump on the exact day as his first jump and out of the same airplane. “I consider myself blessed to have this experience,” LeSchander says of the sport that has brought him decades of unbelievable thrills and very dear friends with whom he shares an intense bond. “The people I have met in this sport are second to none,” he says. “It’s an amazing thing to share with others.” On July 5, LeSchander celebrated his 40th year of skydiving with a jump at the Perry/Warsaw Airport in Wyoming County. Friends Jim and Sue Beck of Hilton opened Rochester Skydivers at the airport in May and Brian was on hand for the grand opening. He mentioned his desire to make a special jump on July 5th and the Becks were determined to help him
make it happen. Amazingly, LeSchander was able to make the jump out of the same airplane from which he made his first jump, as the Becks are the current owners of the plane. “For an airplane to stay local is remarkable,” he says. “Skydiving is hard on airplanes. It’s remarkable the plane made it.” The jump was documented with video and photographs and Brian’s wife got to go up in the airplane with him. Following the jump, there was a luncheon party with 50-75 people. “It was pretty nice,” Brian says. The experience of skydiving and free falling creates, “... an exhilaration like nothing else,” Brian explains. “It can jade other experiences.” He notes that before the parachute opens, the jump is noisy, but that once the parachute is deployed, “It is silent and relaxing under the canopy. Landing safely is also an art in itself.” LeSchander has taken part in what he calls “major league” formation skydiving at The Ranch outside New York City. He describes the experience of “flying my

It’s really an art -- color set in space above the ground and in a few moments it will be gone.” He confesses that if he had had children, he might not have continued with the sport for so many years, but notes that children of skydiving friends are comfortable with it, including its risks. When the time is right, they are ready to take part in tandem jumps themselves, he says. LeSchander acknowledges the dangers of skydiving, but he explains that it is tru-
ly unforgiving only “when you go outside the boundaries. Even messing up a landing can be deadly,” he says. In his 60 years of life, LeSchander figures he has spent, “Fifty hours in free fall, detached from the earth.” He says he probably peaked at the sport in his 30s and 40s, but wants to make a few more jumps, and continues to enjoy his many friends in skydiving. “Of all the people I’ve met, the dearest to me are the ones I’ve met at a drop zone,” he says. Note: Provided photos used with this article by Dan McEneany and Karen LeSchander.
Now 60, Brian LeSchander made his first jump July 5, 1975 at Para Tech Skydivers on East Fork Lake Road in Hamlin. “In (a) 40 year span, I have accumulated over 3,000 jumps with more than 50 hours of freefall and earned a “D” license expert certification as recognized with The United States Parachute Association,” LeSchander says.

Modern “homesteaders” preach what they practice Sharing Master Gardener lessons at Brockport Farmers Market
Clarendon. They live in a mobile home as they plan the construction of a house there. They call themselves “homesteaders,” living off the land with a “main focus to take care of ourselves and have a little abundance to share with friends and family,” Jenna said. Their choice of Orleans County to settle had much to do with acceptable building codes and acreage allowances for livestock. And, their land is a ten-minute drive from Brockport, Jena’s hometown. Colin grew up in a Grand Rapids, Michigan suburb and studied welding technology at a community college. He is an installation coordinator for the Rochester branch of nrgHomeSolar, providing home solar energy products. Right now, his job is their source of income while, they say, “Jena is the manager of plans at home, making sure things work out for us.” Jena studied graphic design at RIT, and then worked as art director at a newspaper in New York City, where she and Colin met four years ago. They became involved in a farmers market in New York called GrowNYC. It was the inspiration for their current calling. Jena was glad to escape the big city. “I never liked living in New York City,” she said. “I missed being out in the country.” The country setting Jena missed was rural Brockport, her hometown. They first retreated from New York City by moving to Stanton, Virginia, which they found “beautiful” and populated with people “who helped shape what we want to be doing now in sustainable farming.” Although they loved Stanton, “I was homesick and missed family,” Jena said. “And, thinking of starting a family at some point, I wanted my mom around.” They enjoy the Brockport area, and hope to find the kind of community support they knew in Stanton.

“Bug hotels and integrated pest management” were the topics presented to shoppers at the Brockport Farmers Market on July 26. A young couple explained the method is about “all different kinds of bugs you want to have in your garden” to maximize successful growing. Each week, the couple sets up a small table to educate people on how to work with nature and improve the natural environment. Next up they will feature a visiting local beekeeper discussing the basics of beekeeping. Topics such as preserving fruits and vegetables will be the focus near harvest time. Colin Butgereit and Jena Buckwell, are students in the Master Gardener program at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Orleans County. They are half-way through their training and will be certified Master Gardeners in December. Besides taking courses and studying the 400-page manual, they must complete 50 volunteer hours. Colin already has 50 and Jena is at 90 hours. “We have chosen to educate the public,” Jenna says about their volunteer work. “It provides a forum for us to talk with people about things we think are important in agriculture and keeping the environment happy and healthy.” Their dog, Lucy, joins them at their table at the farmers market and serves as a good will ambassador for the educational booth. In their mid-twenties, the pair has chosen a lifestyle close to the soil, purchasing several acres near

Photo by Dianne Hickerson. “It was a great benefit to know a group of people in Stanton doing similar things and helping each other out,” Jena said. “We are starting to find that community here.” That is one benefit of the Farmers Market for them. Colin and Jena are making a unique contribution in their teaching mission at Brockport Farmers Market. “We welcome them,” said Ruthann Tryka, co-manager of the weekly market. “They are very interesting and I think a real asset, bringing a whole new dimension to the market.”

Proposal for self-service storage facility in Ogden withdrawn by Kristina Gabalski Christopher Wilcox has withdrawn his application to the Town of Ogden regarding construction of a self-service storage facility between Routes 31 and 531 near Washington Street. Wilcox notified the town about his decision Thursday, July 9. The Ogden Planning Board was in the process of completing an EAF (Environmental Assessment Form) on the project when the application was withdrawn. Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard said the Town Board was waiting for the EAF before making a decision regarding the re-zoning of the 12.5 acre parcel from residential to a self-service storage overlay district.
Wilcox told the Suburban News/The Herald the most significant reason he decided to withdraw the application was because of finances. “It was determined that the development was going to cost more than anticipated,” he said, and explained those costs included the size of the proposed development - 16 storage buildings with approximately 30 units per building, and two smaller buildings with approximately 35 units each - as well as his hope to assist owner-occupied houses next to the property and also satisfy renters. Wilcox said he planned to create a drainage system to assist homeowners in the

neighborhood and additionally wanted to plant evergreens along the property line to create a year-round aesthetic view. “After receiving word from my engineer last week of the anticipated costs, I decided to withdraw my application,” he said. He added that he is not sure what is next for the property. Members of the 31 West Neighborhood Association strongly opposed the re-zoning during a public hearing held by the Ogden Town Board May 13. Duane Gaul, a leader of the Association, said his group is pleased that Wilcox withdrew his application, “But he did the same thing in 2011 - withdrew his application after we opposed it. Mr. Wilcox can wait and reapply later for another re-zoning attempt,” Gaul said. Following the 2011 withdrawal, the Town of Ogden passed a local law in 2014, which created the self-service storage overlay district. The 31 West Neighborhood Association opposed the law because, “We continue to believe that selfstorage businesses do not belong in residential neighborhoods,” Gaul said, and indicated members plan to ask the Town Board to amend the law so that it does not allow self-service storage facilities in residential districts. “We believe that allowing self-service storage facilities in light industrial districts and commercial districts is sufficient,” he said. Gaul noted that the group is pleased to see the construction of North Coast Personal Storage on South Union Street in the Commercial Heritage District. “It is an area where the Comprehensive Town Plan says they can be located,” Gaul explained. He added that testimony given during the May 13 public hearing via cell phone by Lt. Colonel Daniel Fletcher, who lives in the 31 West neighborhood and is deployed in Afghanistan, “may have had an effect on the Town Board’s feelings about Highway View SelfStorage.”

FACING THE EAST HORIZON If one looks carefully at the orientation of the graves in early American Christian burial grounds, he or she might notice that the graves are positioned in an east/west orientation. This Judeo-Christian tradition began with references in the Bible indicating that people entered sacred places from the east (facing west) and exited from the west (facing toward the east). It was also believed that facing the feet of the deceased toward the east made it easier for the departed to rise and face the right direction when it came time to follow Jesus upon His return. Today, many modern cemeteries do not follow this strict body-positioning
prescription due to lack of adequate burial space. If a loved one has died and did not purchase or choose a cemetery plot, consider where he or she would have liked to have been buried. While many people want to be buried in the place they lived, others prefer to be buried in the place they grew up, or in the place they were born. For more information about the funeral and memorial services, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

On Sunday, August 16, Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home and Walker Brothers Funeral Home will hold their annual butterfly release ceremony for families that have recently lost a loved one. The release will be held at YMCA Camp Northpoint, 249 North Greece Road in Hilton. Two ceremonies will take place - one at 12 p.m. and the other at 3 p.m., respectively. Families and friends are invited to participate in the butterfly release as a celebration of remembrance for all recently deceased loved ones. During the ceremony, hundreds of monarch butterflies are released into the air as a tribute. Over the years, participation has grown and this year, close to 700 community members are expected. The monarch was chosen over other butterflies because of its migratory nature. By instinct alone, monarch butterflies migrate south to Mexico - to the same mountains that their ancestors left the previous spring. Somehow, they find a place in Mexico that they’ve never seen before. Monarch butterflies are born knowing everything they need to survive. The symbolic nature of the butterflies ascending toward the heavens leaves a strong impression on the ceremony participants. Attending the butterfly release ceremony has become a comforting event for families to come and remember loved ones they have lost.

Since 2009, the month of August has been an important time at Lakeview Community Church, 30 Long Pond Road, Rochester. It is time for its “August Challenge.” The “August Challenge” is a charity program that collects food for the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf. In previous years 130 boxes of cereal, 225 cans of peaches, 240 cans of soup and last year 758 pounds of peanut butter were delivered. Each year Lakeview Community Church makes a significant contribution to the Food Shelf. This year’s challenge is to collect 550 cans of tuna fish. Tuna fish may be brought to Lakeview Community Church on any of the five Sundays in August at 10 a.m., or on Saturday, August 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Any and all contributions are appreciated. For information, contact Lakeview Community Church.

It is again time to appreciate our beautiful village of Brockport. Trees leafed out, green neighborhoods and downtown. Too soon 90 degree days after a brutally cold winter - coldest on record. The quick warmth, while welcome, aborted the blooms of flowering trees - no white pear tree blooms at Wegman’s. But there are beautiful flowers everywhere to celebrate the season. The real beauty of Brockport is in its friendly, helpful people. Our downtown stores are unique with restaurants for any and all tastes. Additionally, we have public schools that are excellent from kindergarten to graduation, facilities that are the best, and an excellent college next door. Safety - we have it here. A fine police force, that once arrested a would-be bank robber wearing explosives, without harm to anyone, and an excellent fire department that protects our area; our highway department that is responsible for many roads, did its best keeping them clear this winter, under arctic conditions. We have medical and rehabilitation centers, ambulance service, a choice in waste pickup companies, a one-way railroad that ends here, a senior center, a recreation center, a spacious modern library, and more. All this with the beauty of the surrounding area and the Erie Canal. Uniqueness defines our village, and now it’s summer. Festivals, concerts, fireworks, farm markets and lazy days to spend under sunny skies. There is much to be thankful for here and we have many houses of worship for giving our thanks. Also, we’re thankful for things we don’t have: severe earthquakes, major floods, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, wildfires, landslides, sinkholes. So, endure the occasional blizzard or even ice storm, the worst we can expect, and be grateful to live in this beautiful village and surrounding towns that are among the best this country has to offer. Sigillo Chiropractic Getting Out With The New Baby
After the experience of a nine-month pregnancy and delivery, few of life’s pleasures measure up to taking the new baby out to meet the world. That could be in the form of a walk, run or hike. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has some thoughts for you to keep in mind on how to Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. best enjoy that experience and avoid injury. A push carriage, generally the most popular for of transportation for infants, should have features like a large adjustable handlebar that your hands fit around comfortably. The handlebar should be adjustable so you can set it at a height and angle that will not put any strain on your back when you push, which will also give you more control over the carriage. Large bicycle-sized rear tires make the carriage more stable and easier to push. As well, you may want to consider a screen across the front to protect the baby from insects and airborne debris. For carrying a baby while walking, the ACA recommends a front-side carrier as opposed to a backpack style. In a backpack carrier an infant’s unobserved head is more likely to bob and loll. In a baby less than one year old the cervical spine - the neck and the upper portion of the spine - are not fully developed and this jerking motion can be harmful. Keeping the baby in front lets you better control head movement. Don’t forget the front carrier is going to affect your posture and balance, so try it out on short jaunts at first and adjust as necessary. Talk with your chiropractor about more suggestions for getting out with baby. Presented as a service to the community by

Hometown Heroes from near and far Benjamin Olson, Brockport High School Class of 2012, graduated from the Advanced Infantryman Course at the Marine Corps Advanced Infantry Training Battalion, at Camp Pendleton, California. In order to achieve this honor, a marine must be recommended by the leaders in his/her chain of command and prove ready to lead other marines. Ben moved to Camp Pendleton, California this past winter, where he
became 1 Battalion 5th Marine for the U.S. While at camp he met Corporal Demetre Tappin from Guyana. Here in the U.S., hometown heroes have the opportunity to receive acknowledgement for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to society. Ben believes that hometown heroes from other countries deserve the same recognition. Both Ben and Demetre participated in this seven week training where they worked alongside one another
doing offensive and defensive combat military operations in urban terrain, as well as live fire operations. They both finished the course and received the same accolades. At the conclusion of their specialized training, Demetre returned home to Guyana, while Ben currently waits for deployment in November. Despite the many worldly differences between the two men, they continue to serve one another as fellow soldiers while maintaining a beautiful friendship.

Hilton goes purple for accident victim Members of the Hilton community continue to show their support for a teenage car crash victim through the color purple: purple ribbons, purple t-shirts and purple bracelets. Sixteen year old Hilton High School student Courtney Confer was seriously injured July 2, when her car was t-boned at the intersection of Lawrence Road and Route 260 in Clarkson. She has spent the last month at Strong Memorial Hospital in a coma, however her condition continues to improve and she is now responding to those around her as well as moving her legs, arms and head. Courtney’s family indicated on their Caring Bridge website page that she was ex-
pected to be transferred to the Restorative Neurology and Rehabilitation Center at Unity Hospital (formerly St. Mary’s), the week of August 3. Friends and family members hung the ribbons on trees and around the village shortly after the accident to show support for Courtney and to heighten awareness of her fight to recover. The ribbons also remind people of the dangers of the intersection where Courtney was hit. Purple t-shirts ($10) and purple bracelets ($5) with the message “Support Court” are also a part of the effort. Purple has become the symbol of Courtney’s fight because, “she loves the color purple,” a family friend told the Suburban News/The Herald.

The first-ever donut eating contest was held at this year’s Orleans County 4-H Fair, July 27 through August 1. Two members of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department took on donut eating “amateurs” in two rounds to see who could eat the most of six donuts. Here, Orleans County Deputy Sheriff Jeff Cole (in sunglasses), competes in the first round. He lost out to the other contestants who received t-shirts for their efforts. Deputy Cole joked that he lost because he prefers eating bagels. Looking on is Zachary Moore, the 2014 Orleans County 4-H Fair Duke. Orleans County Sheriff’s Department investigator Ken Strickland participated in the second round and also lost out to the “amateur” contestants. Donuts were donated by Dunkin Donuts. Brockport First Baptist Church playing a different tune Brockport First Baptist Church, 124 South Main Street, invites the community to something unique. As of Sunday, August 2, everyone has the opportunity to enjoy Praise Singing prior to the start of the regular worship service. Every Sunday morning from 9:45 to 10 a.m the church will sing songs of popular contemporary Christian artists, such as Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, Chris Tomlin and others. “We are trying something new,” according to Pastor Joanne Gilbert-Cannon. “There is so much wonderful new Christian music out there. This gives us the chance to learn something new and still enjoy the familiar hymns that we love.” Pastor Joanne points out that, “The community is welcome to join in on this. You don’t have to stay for the service, but we would love to have you join us for worship, too!” Music Director Kim Emanuel has been busy collecting songs for all to enjoy singing. Kim will play piano with the help of two guitarists, Barb McCauley and Lori Steenson. Dick Carter will help in leading the singing. Kim hopes that other instrumentalists, especially some percussion, will want to join to help lead the church in praise time. Provided information
