2015 marks special anniversaries for local skydiver by Kristina Gabalski For Spencerport native Brian LeSchander, things have come full-circle in a remarkable way. LeSchander is marking his 40th anniversary as a skydiver and his 60th birthday this year and was able to celebrate the milestones by making a jump on the exact day as his first jump and out of the same airplane. “I consider myself blessed to have this experience,” LeSchander says of the sport that has brought him decades of unbelievable thrills and very dear friends with whom he shares an intense bond. “The people I have met in this sport are second to none,” he says. “It’s an amazing thing to share with others.” On July 5, LeSchander celebrated his 40th year of skydiving with a jump at the Perry/Warsaw Airport in Wyoming County. Friends Jim and Sue Beck of Hilton opened Rochester Skydivers at the airport in May and Brian was on hand for the grand opening. He mentioned his desire to make a special jump on July 5th and the Becks were determined to help him
make it happen. Amazingly, LeSchander was able to make the jump out of the same airplane from which he made his first jump, as the Becks are the current owners of the plane. “For an airplane to stay local is remarkable,” he says. “Skydiving is hard on airplanes. It’s remarkable the plane made it.” The jump was documented with video and photographs and Brian’s wife got to go up in the airplane with him. Following the jump, there was a luncheon party with 50-75 people. “It was pretty nice,” Brian says. The experience of skydiving and free falling creates, “... an exhilaration like nothing else,” Brian explains. “It can jade other experiences.” He notes that before the parachute opens, the jump is noisy, but that once the parachute is deployed, “It is silent and relaxing under the canopy. Landing safely is also an art in itself.” LeSchander has taken part in what he calls “major league” formation skydiving at The Ranch outside New York City. He describes the experience of “flying my
Brian LeSchander’s 40 year Anniversary jump was done at the Perry/Warsaw airport, the new home of Rochester Skydivers, out of a 182 Cessna N6346A piloted by Geoff Kline, the same airplane used for his first jump. Jim and Sue Beck of Hilton own and operate the plane. body” in formations with up to 100 skydivers. “I was lucky to be on those dives,” he says. “It really brings out the best in you. It’s really an art -- color set in space above the ground and in a few moments it will be gone.” He confesses that if he had had children, he might not have continued with the sport for so many years, but notes that children of skydiving friends are comfortable with it, including its risks. When the time is right, they are ready to take part in tandem jumps themselves, he says. LeSchander acknowledges the dangers of skydiving, but he explains that it is tru-
ly unforgiving only “when you go outside the boundaries. Even messing up a landing can be deadly,” he says. In his 60 years of life, LeSchander figures he has spent, “Fifty hours in free fall, detached from the earth.” He says he probably peaked at the sport in his 30s and 40s, but wants to make a few more jumps, and continues to enjoy his many friends in skydiving. “Of all the people I’ve met, the dearest to me are the ones I’ve met at a drop zone,” he says. Note: Provided photos used with this article by Dan McEneany and Karen LeSchander.
Now 60, Brian LeSchander made his first jump July 5, 1975 at Para Tech Skydivers on East Fork Lake Road in Hamlin. “In (a) 40 year span, I have accumulated over 3,000 jumps with more than 50 hours of freefall and earned a “D” license expert certification as recognized with The United States Parachute Association,” LeSchander says.

The monarch was chosen over other butterflies because of its migratory nature. By instinct alone, monarch butterflies migrate south to Mexico - to the same mountains that their ancestors left the previous spring. Somehow, they find a place in Mexico that they’ve never seen before. Monarch butterflies are born knowing everything they need to survive. The symbolic nature of the butterflies ascending toward the heavens leaves a strong impression on the ceremony participants. Attending the butterfly release ceremony has become a comforting event for families to come and remember loved ones they have lost. Provided information
Village of Spencerport changes refuse containers policy In March of this year, the Village of Spencerport Board of Trustees instituted a local law effecting refuse removal. By June 2016 all homeowners will be required to use the green 96 gallon rolling refuse containers sold by the Village regardless of the amount of trash generated or storage options. New equipment is now in place to lift and dump village issued containers. These easy to roll containers will hold more than the 3 cans allowed now, are less likely to blow around in the wind and provide a uniform and neat street appearance. If you have not already purchased a rolling refuse container you will be receiving a letter with more information and instructions on ordering your rolling refuse cart. If there are any questions please contact the Village Office at 352-4771. Provided Information

Seymour Local History Room progresses on schedule Grand opening set for After Hours Fundraiser - Nov. 7 by Grace Griffee The Seymour Library Local History Room in Brockport has come a long way since the groundbreaking ceremony on April 18 and is still on schedule to be completed by midSeptember. The purpose of the room is to provide local history organizations with a place to display items from their collections on a monthly basis as well as a central location for local history books, space for presentations and lectures, and table space, a computer and scanner for those who would like to do research. “Thanks to Senator (Joe) Robach and Senator (Robert) Ortt, for providing grant money so that we could purchase furnishings, a projector, a computer and audio system,” said Director Carl Gouveia. The room is funded through state grants and private donations, not public tax dollars. The first exhibits will be offered to the three municipalities that the Seymour Library serves – Brockport, Sweden and Clarkson. “The library is well-loved by the three communities it serves, which is evident through both usage and donations,” said Gouveia. The room’s display cases will then be available for use by any local history organization. The Local History Room’s official grand opening will be held during the annual After Hours Fundraiser on Saturday, November 7 at 7 p.m. During the event, the Donor of the Year Award is also presented. Last year’s recipient was BISCO (Brockport Integrated Service and Community Organization). Tickets will be on sale in September at the library. “I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback and people are excited about the expansion,” said Gouveia. “Hopefully, this will increase our community’s knowledge of local history and encourage them to visit our local museums.” To watch the progress of the Seymour Library Local History Room and learn more about programs, “like” their Facebook page. The Holley Rod & Gun Club has announced that its Hunter Safety Instructor Team is holding a N.Y.S. Basic Hunter Education Course at the club grounds on Pumping Station Road, just south of the Village of Holley. The course begins on Wednesday, August 12 at 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continues the same time on Friday, August 14, then concludes Saturday, August 15 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All courses are free. All first time hunters must complete the
Hunter Education Course before they can obtain a NY State hunting license. The class is for students age 11 and up. Anyone may pre-register by filling out and leaving the completed student registration form, in person, at the Holley Rod & Gun Club on Thursdays, between 5 and 8 p.m. At that time students will receive their workbooks. In order to complete the course successfully, students must score 80 percent or higher on the written exam.
Hilton goes purple for accident victim by Kristina Gabalski Members of the Hilton community continue to show their support for a teenage car crash victim through the color purple: purple ribbons, purple t-shirts and purple bracelets. Sixteen year old Hilton High School student Courtney Confer was seriously injured July 2, when her car was t-boned at the intersection of Lawrence Road and Route 260 in Clarkson. She has spent the last month at Strong Memorial Hospital in a coma, however her condition continues to improve and she is now responding to those around her as well as moving her legs, arms and head. Courtney’s family indicated on their Caring Bridge website page that she was ex-
pected to be transferred to the Restorative Neurology and Rehabilitation Center at Unity Hospital (formerly St. Mary’s), the week of August 3. Friends and family members hung the ribbons on trees and around the village shortly after the accident to show support for Courtney and to heighten awareness of her fight to recover. The ribbons also remind people of the dangers of the intersection where Courtney was hit. Purple t-shirts ($10) and purple bracelets ($5) with the message “Support Court” are also a part of the effort. Purple has become the symbol of Courtney’s fight because, “she loves the color purple,” a family friend told the Suburban News/The Herald.

“Homesteaders” preach what they practice by sharing Master Gardener lessons by Doug Hickerson
“Bug hotels and integrated pest management” were the topics presented to shoppers at the Brockport Farmers Market on July 26. A young couple explained the method is about “all different kinds of bugs you want to have in your garden” to maximize successful growing. Each week, the couple sets up a small table to educate people on how to work with nature and improve the natural environment. Next up they will feature a visiting local beekeeper discussing the basics of beekeeping. Topics such as preserving fruits and vegetables will be the focus near harvest time. Colin Butgereit and Jena Buckwell, are students in the Master Gardener program at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Orleans County. They are half-way through their training and will be certified Master Gardeners in December. Besides taking courses and studying the 400-page manual, they must complete 50 volunteer hours. Colin already has 50 and Jena is at 90 hours. “We have chosen to educate the public,” Jenna says about their volunteer work. “It provides a forum for us to talk with people about things we think are important in agriculture and keeping the environment happy and healthy.” Their dog, Lucy, joins them at their table at the farmers market and serves as a good will ambassador for the educational booth. In their mid-twenties, the pair has chosen a lifestyle close to the soil, purchasing several acres near Clarendon. They live in a mobile home as they plan the construction of a house there. They call themselves “homesteaders,” living off the land with a “main focus to take care of ourselves and have a little abundance to share with friends and family,” Jenna said. Their choice of Orleans County to settle had much to do with acceptable building codes and acreage allowances for livestock. And, their land
is a ten-minute drive from Brockport, Jena’s hometown. Colin grew up in a Grand Rapids, Michigan suburb and studied welding technology at a community college. He is an installation coordinator for the Rochester branch of nrgHomeSolar, providing home solar energy products. Right now, his job is their source of income while, they say, “Jena is the manager of plans at home, making sure things work out for us.” Jena studied graphic design at RIT, and then worked as art director at a newspaper in New York City, where she and Colin met four years ago. They became involved in a farmers market in New York called GrowNYC. It was the inspiration for their current calling. Jena was glad to escape the big city. “I never liked living in New York City,” she said. “I missed being out in the country.” The country setting Jena missed was rural Brockport, her hometown. They first retreated from New York City by moving to Stanton, Virginia, which they found “beautiful” and populated with people “who helped shape what we want to be doing now in sustainable farming.” Although they loved Stanton, “I was homesick and missed family,” Jena said. “And, thinking of starting a family at some point, I wanted my mom around.” They enjoy the Brockport area, and hope to find the kind of community support they knew in Stanton. “It was a great benefit to know a group of people in Stanton doing similar things and helping each other out,” Jena said. “We are starting to find that community here.” That is one benefit of the Farmers Market for them. Colin and Jena are making a unique contribution in their teaching mission at Brockport Farmers Market. “We welcome them,” said Ruthann Tryka, co-manager of the weekly market. “They are very interesting and I think a real asset, bringing a whole new dimension to the market.”

One more thought ...
It could happen to anybody, couldn’t it? by Donna Haire Oh, you know how it goes … you leave your coat in the coatroom and after dinner, you slip on one of the five black coats hanging there that you believe is yours, then put your hand in the pocket and find a pocket knife -- that you know you don’t own. It’s not your coat. You’ve accidentally picked one that you think is yours. Or, how about when you’re on vacation -- you stand at the luggage carousel at a busy airport and grab the familiar navy blue Samsonite, then you get home and open it up and find it full of baby clothes and bonnets. It happens all the time. We make foolish mistakes. Well, wouldn’t you know the same thing happened with the talking deer head that was delivered to the back door of the Newman Riga Library? When it disappeared within one hour -- before an employee arrived in the building and was directed to find it -- I can only assume that somebody made a dreadful mistake and thought it was their talking deer head. It could happen to anybody, couldn’t it? Buddy Buck was a joke of a gift bestowed upon me by a family member who generously gifts me with absurdities for every occasion noted on a calendar. But this time, the joke was on him because Buddy served a very useful purpose in my life. Instead of being hidden in the basement with the many other gems, including taxidermied frogs and collections of monkeys, I was able to entertain the grandchildren with Buddy. At a certain age, all four of them were convinced that Buddy was one of Santa’s reindeer. Resident in the garage, (no way was he coming into the house), he talked, thanks to a microphone kept in the kitchen, allowing for very personalized conversations with individual children. But mostly, he sang. His repertoire included classics such as “Born to Be Wild”, “Home on the Range”, and my personal favorite, the incomparable “Do Wah Diddy Diddy.” Time passes, and children grow up (and garages need to be painted) and it was time to share the wealth. You know what they say: “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” What better way to thank the new director of

the (Newman Riga) library, to honor the new director of the library, to reward the new director of the library, (who possesses, by the way, a wicked sense of humor herself), than to gift her with the incomparable Buddy Buck. I was sure that she would find a way to maximize Buddy’s full potential. Assembling all of the various accessories that came with him, including braces to attach him to a wall, and composing a note which I hung ceremoniously on his antler, I carefully positioned him on the back step of the building. I then let myself into the library and left a note on the circulation desk, directing staff to check the back door. I then further arranged Buddy for maximum impact. Then I left. All day long, I waited for a phone call. It never came. I thought they were “toying” with me. Late in the day, they called to tell me a book I had ordered was available for pick up, forcing me to ask about Buddy. Sadly, they had no idea what I was talking about. In the hour between my leaving him on the door step, like a giant orphan, and someone coming to work, an “upstanding” member of the community must have “mistakenly” thought the talking deer was theirs! Goodness knows it could happen to anyone! Funny thing is that when I parked behind the library to unload him and arrange Buddy where I did, there actually was another deer in the parking lot -- a “target deer”-- posed nearby. It was very disconcerting. I seriously doubt that they both developed legs and ran off together. Obviously somebody made a dreadful mistake. They took what didn’t belong to them but I’m sure it was an accident; an honest mistake, don’t you think? Did I call the police? Well, no, would you? That would have been like admitting to police that when my wallet was stolen many years ago, the most valuable thing in it was the Lassie ring I’d had since I was 6. Sadly, I’d taken it in to show a co-worker that very day. I’m barely over that loss. But whoever you are and wherever you are, remember we’re all listening for Buddy’s song. And if that familiar riff from “Born to Be Wild” happens to spill out onto the street from your open windows this summer, when I’m in the neighborhood, I will be the lady knocking on your door. And since it’s an honest mistake, just one of those silly things that happens, I know you’ll want to make it right. Note: The writer retired as director of the Newman Riga Library in December 2014.
