“Farm to Table” feast funds excellence in students For the past two years in the Brockport Central School District, students and staff benefitted from the financial support provided by the BEST in Brockport Foundation. Two recent grants included: Students who found the cost of the Washington trip prohibitive, were enabled to go by a grant of $1,000. Another grant for the same amount provided the French Language students a trip to Buffalo to see the “Phantom of the Opera.” This year, level 4 and 5 French students read “The Phantom of the Opera” in French, as part of their studies. The grant provided an opportunity to bring French curriculum to life for the students. “With BEST standing for ‘Building Excellence in Students Today,’ our mission is to support Brockport School District students and staff by providing resources to expand existing programs and to create new educational opportunities,” said Alicia Fink, president of the foundation. “In other words, we provide funds for programs and activities which are not funded by the school. We also help students who do not have the resources to participate in programs such as the AP exams, the 3-1-3 program and various field trips not paid for by the district.” Another project which made local TV news was the Brockport Bookmobile, a school bus converted by the Technology Department of the Brockport School District. “Through a generous donation

from the Schmitt Foundation, district librarians were able to purchase books used in the bookmobile as well as books to be given to students, thus helping bridge the summer gap in reading,” Fink said. The Jeffery Brown Honorary Scholarship Award for a graduating senior is another kind of contribution illustrating a wide variety of support. To support these projects for excellence in today’s students, the second annual Farm to Table Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, September 22, at Kirby Farms, 9739 West Ridge Road in Brockport from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the meal are $100 per person. Reservations must be made by September 18. Tickets can be purchased at Wegmans Markets. The event is a community collaboration with contributions from “Garnishes” catering at The College at Brockport, Kirby Farms, Wegmans and Mahan’s Liquor Store. If you would like to become a sponsor of the Farm to Table Dinner, or to become a member of the foundation, please contact Alicia C. Fink, president at 729-6864 or Leslie Bull at 880-5484. The foundation is looking for more individual or business sponsors at various levels from Platinum at $1,000 + to Copper at below $100. BEST is a not-for-profit 509(a)C charitable corporation registered in NY State. For more information go to facebook. com/BrockportBESTFoundation. Email: Brockportbestfoundation@gmail.com.

The church with the crooked cross St. Christopher’s Catholic Church located at 3350 South Union Street in North Chili has been known for the last fifty years for the crooked cross that sits atop its roof. Pastor Robert Gaudio explains that the sculpture represents the hand of Christ holding up all who gather there to worship as they journey through the highs and lows of life. Over the years, Father Bob adds, it has come to mean Christ’s hand

reaching out in hospitality to all in the community inviting them to come inside and worship. The church will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary on Sunday, September 23. There will be a 10 a.m. Mass celebrated by Bishop Salvatore Matano. Following the Mass, there will be a dinner. All are welcome. Provided information

B-B Schools launch core values as part of Character Education Program Building on the existing character education program, Byron-Bergen schools launched four core values. The core values, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Accountable, and Be Your Best Self encompass the best qualities of Byron-Bergen students. “The core values are intended to be guiding principles for our buildings. We will tie discipline to them as necessary and work to really help students understand the importance of these values,” said Jr./Sr. High School Assistant Principal Scott Bradley. “Our teachers will use them as the basis for expectations in their classrooms. They will also drive expectations for areas like the bus, cafeteria, sporting events, and the hallways of our buildings.” The Character Ed initiative has been a collaborative team effort between the elementary and high school over the last two years. A team of teachers, support staff, and administrators from both buildings worked together to develop the core values and expectations. “Character Ed is a way of focusing on the whole student,” said Elementary School Assistant Principal Betsy Brown. “We are teaching our students the importance of

The first doubles team of Rebecca Blackburn and Anna Wojtas were 6-1, 6-1 winners as was the third doubles team of Frannie Belde and Abbey MacDonald. Brockport CSD artificial turf Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Brockport Central School District invites the community to celebrate its new artificial turf athletic field during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, September 14. The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Dahn Walrath Memorial Stadium. Community members are also invited to stay for the football game against Brighton which follows at 7 p.m.

The artificial turf athletic field was part of the capital improvement project approved by voters on May 16, 2017. Stadium turf boasts many benefits, including increased outdoor use for all students, the elimination of mowing, striping and chemical usage, more level and consistent field conditions and additional opportunities for school and community groups. Churchville-Chili cuts ribbon on field resurface/splits soccer DH by Warren Kozireski After more than one year of construction, the Churchville-Chili school district officially cut the ribbon on the new turf field at the stadium in ceremonies September 4 as part of a soccer doubleheader. “We are here today because you, our voters, approved this turf field and new track in our Phase 5 Capital Improvement project in December of 2016,” school board president Dr. Cheryl Repass said during the ceremony. “We are thrilled to be able to share it with our community. This stadium is just one example of many that show how supportive the community is of our district goal to provide quality facilities that are well-maintained, as well as our mission to help all students strive for excellence while developing their unique talents.” As part of the project, a new pool and athletic entrance at the high school are also being constructed with completion expected by the summer of 2020. “What a great resource to have for our student athletes here in Western New York, where snow and rain never make it easy to get out on a field and play,” school superintendent Lori Orologio said. In the second half of the soccer doubleheader, Churchville-Chili spotted visiting Spencerport a 1-0 first half lead before exploding for three goals within an eightminute span over the first 40 minutes and tacking on five second half goals in an 8-1 victory. The Rangers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 8:31 when senior co-captain Justin Hockenberger rushed the net and shot, got his own rebound which was saved again before senior Ivan Valadozka knocked it in. The Saints tied the game at 18:24 as senior Dylan Rippe ran down the right wing and centered to sophomore Mario Cozzo, who rifled his shot off the left goalpost and in.

F

E E R

Just 19 seconds later, Gabe Correia dribbled to within 30 yards and was left open by the defense. He netted his first varsity goal to give the Saints a 2-1 lead, which would prove to be the game-winner. Senior Colby Egan created the third Saints goal in the 26th minute with a long lead pass to Rippe, who outraced the defender and scored to make it 3-1 at the half. It was all-Saints in the second half as Rippe raced down the right wing on a threeon-one break and crossed to Egan for the tap-in in the 48th minute. “My legs were a little bit tired, so I was just trying to keep running and my teammate, Dylan Rippe, made a great run, beat two guys and played a great cross that I just had to tap away,” Egan said. Cozzo netted his second 88 seconds later to make it 5-1 with a shot from the left wing about 20-yards out that glanced off the goalkeeper’s hand and into the net. Egan scored unassisted in the 56th minute before senior Vinnie Mathias scored his varsity goal less than one minute later and senior Dylan Pfendler netted his first varsity goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute after being taken down in the box. “We just had to not get down as a team; we had to keep the intensity up and I thought we did a really good job of bouncing back and playing hard even though we went down,” Egan said. “As a team, we really excel at the counter attack playing it big and quick and getting up, it’s a major tactic for us. “It’s a really big deal for us (winning their first home game on the new turf). We wanted to come out and make a statement of how we’re going to play this year and I’m really happy with the result.” Egan finished with two goals and one assist, Rippe also had a three-point effort with one goal, and two assists while Cozzo netted two goals in the win.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on September 4 for the new turf field in Churchville-Chili’s stadium. Provided photos.

Byron-Bergen receives $25,000 rural education grant Two years of hard work are paying off for High School Science Teacher Jeffrey Parnapy and his colleagues in the form of a $25,000 grant from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education. The grant money will be used to purchase data collection instruments for 7th through 12th grade science classes and to bolster the newly established agriculture program, now in its second year. The school was nominated by several local farmers for the grant, which is designated to support STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs in rural public school districts. Parnapy, who teaches biology and agriculture, spearheaded the grant proposal with help from his science colleagues Michael Conine, Briana Delvecchio, Jenifer Faro, Peter Spence, and Terry Vick. The grant money will benefit all of the science classes by providing a range of specialized equipment including meteorological instruments and soil and water analysis equipment. “We are so excited to be receiving the $25,000 America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education Grant,” said Jr./Sr. High School Principal Patrick McGee. “A huge thank you to our Ag and Science teacher Mr. Parnapy for doing the leg work behind the scenes to win this grant. Last year we started an initiative to bring an Agriculture program back into our building. We established an Agriculture elective and started FFA (Future Farmers of America). This year we will offer two Ag classes and our FFA program continues to grow. The grant money will go a long way into providing even more resources and opportunities for our students in the coming years.”

Jeffery Parnapy in his classroom. Photo by Gretchen Spittler. The agricultural program was established during the 2017-2018 school year at the suggestion of McGee and Byron-Bergen Superintendent Mickey Edwards. Parnapy enthusiastically agreed to head the program and founded the Byron-Bergen chapter of the FFA. Parnapy earned his degree in animal science from Cornell University and has eight years of experience teaching agriculture in other school districts. He is excited to bring his expertise to the ByronBergen students and use the grant award to the greatest advantage of current and future students. A check presentation ceremony will take place at the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in the Professional Development room at the Jr./Sr. High School. This project was made possible by local farmers and America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Provided information

AUTUMN GUIDE 2018

Autumn is a prime time to tend lawns and gardens Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

Gardening enthusiasts can focus their attention on these areas this fall. •Pamper perennials. As annuals and perennials start to fall back, mark the spots where perennials are located so they can be easily identified later on. This way, when planning spots for spring bulbs or other spring layouts for next year, perennials won’t be overlooked or covered over. •Prune shrubs. Look at shrubs and trees and cut out dead or diseased wood. •Clean up borders. Weed and tidy up borders and lawn edging. •Install pavers or rock wall. Embrace the cooler temperatures to work on labor-intensive projects, such as putting in a garden bed, retaining wall or walkway. •Remove spent summer veggies. Take out vegetable garden plants that have already

bloomed and borne fruit. Tidy up vegetable gardens and start to sow cooler weather plants, such as onions, garlic, beans, and sweet peas. •Rake and compost. Rake the leaves and gather grass clippings to add to the compost pile. •Plant spring bulbs. Get tulips and other spring bulbs ready for planting so they’ll burst with color next year. •Dig up herbs. Relocate herbs like parsley or basil to indoor gardens. Otherwise, strip all leaves and freeze for storage during winter. •Consider mums. Chrysanthemum plants are perennials. While they look beautiful in pots, if planted, maintained and winterized, they can bloom every fall.

•Fertilize the lawn. Fertilizing in autumn helps ensure grass will stay healthy throughout the winter. •Add mulch and compost to the garden. Replenish spent soil with mulch and compost so garden beds will be revitalized for spring planting. •Prune hedges. Tidy up hedges, as they won’t be growing much more this year. •Clean and store equipment. Clean, sharpen and oil all equipment, storing lawn and garden tools properly so they are ready for spring and not lying out all winter. Autumn may not seem like gardening season, but there are plenty of lawn and garden tasks to tend to during this time of year. (Metro)

Leaf peeping planning guide Millions of people each year look forward to the magnificent colors on display in autumn. Fall offers irreplaceable views, whether you’re atop a mountain ridge or thick in the folds of a forest. In addition, the crackle of leaves underfoot and the earthy smell of the soil tempts the senses even more. Some advance planning can help make fall foliage trips that much more enjoyable and awe-inspiring. Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather. com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the United States. Pick your destination Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central

Pack the right gear While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily. There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you’d normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors. Another idea is to hit the ATM machine prior to the visit. Many smaller towns and their local shops may not take credit cards, so it’s best to have cash on hand for food and souvenirs.

Brockport, A Friendly Place To Live & Shop! Sweden seeks tree donations for cemeteries The Town of Sweden’s Lakeview Cemetery is a place of scenic beauty at the top of the Niagara Escarpment. The town also operates the historic High Street Cemetery in the Village of Brockport. Windstorms have felled many mature trees at the two cemeteries. Age and disease have also taken a toll. The town is replacing trees as the cemetery budget allows. Anyone who

would like to contribute to this effort may sponsor a tree as a memorial to a loved one or just to help keep the cemeteries naturally beautiful. Monetary donations are used exclusively to purchase appropriate varieties of trees. For more information about this program, call the cemetery office at 637-3369. Provided information

Chiropractic Care for Kyphosis

It’s about

The classic sign of kyphosis is a rounded (humplike) middle back. Chiropractic care is a nonsurgical treatment option for kyphosis. It can help treat pain, stiffness and other kyphosis symptoms. Generally, the initial step in chiropractic treatment for kyphosis is to determine the cause of the abnormal middle back appearance. Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. The most common cause of kyphosis is poor posture. But you can be born with kyphosis (called congenital kyphosis). You can also develop kyphosis due to trauma or a certain disease, such as Scheuermann’s disease. Your chiropractor will determine the exact cause of your kyphosis and develop a treatment plan for you based on what’s causing your kyphosis.. How does a Chiropractor Diagnose Kyphosis? To help determine the diagnosis of kyphosis, at your initial appointment, your chiropractor will ask about your medical history and do a physical examination. You may also need imaging tests such as x-rays. He or she may also use techniques called motion and static palpation (an examination by means of touch) to feel for tenderness, tightness, and how well your spinal joints move. What Can Chiropractic Care do for Kyphosis? If your kyphosis is cause by poor posture, your chiropractor may be able to help you reduce the “hump” by teaching you better posture. Even if your kyphosis isn’t associated with posture, chiropractic care for kyphosis can address inflammation, decrease muscle spasms, help maintain the health of your spine, optimize motion in the spine by improving muscular strength, reduce chronic pain, slow the process of degeneration in the middle back, and treat the intervertebral discs.

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - September 9, 2018 17

Lyric Theatre expands with Fringe The Lyric Theatre will be presenting fifty performances over eleven days at the 2018 Key Bank Rochester Fringe Festival. All performances take place at the Lyric Theatre, located at 440 Prince Street in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts. This year’s festival begins on Wednesday, September 12 and continues through Saturday, September 22. In keeping with the spirit of Fringe festivals worldwide, The Lyric Theatre will feature non-traditional performances including: A World Music and Yoga Ballet, Aria under the direction of Missy Pfohl Smith, and countless music and comedy performances. The final day of the festival, September 22, will be Geneseo Day featuring ten free shows performed by college students and faculty. New this year, Lyric will be partnering with Third Presbyterian Church for a Pop Goes the Bells concert on the Lyric lawn.

Patrons can sit anywhere they’d like as they enjoy a cash bar and a selection of Broadway tunes from the newly renovated ninety-one year old carillon and tower. This event is free and open to the public with four performances throughout the festival. Leading the way at Lyric are three headlining musicals. The tuneful family treat – “Godspell,” performed by members of Lyric Voices and Lyric Voices Up; the cult classic “Carrie The Musical,” performed by RAPA youth actors; and the gender-bending Off-Broadway smash “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” featuring diverse Rochester professional actors. A complete listing of the shows being presented by The Lyric Theatre may be found at lyrictheatrerochester.org. Advance tickets for all 2018 Key Bank Rochester Fringe Festival performances may be purchased through rochesterfringe.com. Provided information

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - September 9, 2018 19

GCC students take part in Orleans County Heritage Festival History buffs of all ages are invited to walk back and forth through time to meet a treasure trove of important historical figures from across three centuries. As part of the Third Annual Orleans County Heritage Festival, Genesee Community College’s History Club is sponsoring a Timeline Festival at Mount Albion Cemetery, 14925 Telegraph Road, Albion on Saturday, September 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Along the physical timeline, signs marking specific periods such as 1700, 1750, 1800 continuing on to today will indicate prominent events such as the Revolutionary War and Civil War. As participants walk along the timeline, moving forward or backward in time, they will encounter historical impressionists and reenactors who will engage audiences and potentially encourage a noteworthy exchange of interests, ideas and conversation. Key figures from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War and numerous others are among the anticipated timeline guests. This year participants may meet Abigail Adams, the wife and closest advisor to John Adams, and mother to John Quincy Adams. Other notable impres-

sionists may include President James K. Polk, President James Madison, President Abraham Lincoln and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A strong contingent representing noted women in U.S. history will also be featured within the Timeline Festival. Along with Abigail Adams will be Edith Wilson, second wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and Matilda Joslyn Gage, a 19th Century suffragist, abolitionist, author and ‘freethinker;’ among others. Additionally, the Timeline Festival will feature three formal talks, including: Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant portrayed by Derek Maxfield at 11 a.m.; Abigail Adams portrayed by Melinda Grube at 1 p.m.; and Franklin D. Roosevelt portrayed by Albert McFadyen at 3 p.m. The event is free, open to the public and will occur rain or shine outdoors, so dressing according to the outdoor elements is advised. Opinion/Comments Monroe County’s “Make Monroe Home” Program At the June meeting of the Legislature, I was proud to vote in favor of a partnership between Monroe County, BOCES 1 and BOCES 2 and the Greater Rochester Housing Partnership that established the “Make Monroe Home Program.” As a teacher and a father, I am thrilled that Monroe County has a unique program that will help young people discover career opportunities and will build stronger families by providing a unique home ownership opportunity. On August 30, Dinolfo announced that the first house to be renovated under the “Make Monroe Home” Program was selected. The house, located at 4611 Mt. Read Boulevard in the Town of Greece, has been vacant for two years, has been foreclosed upon by Monroe County, and has not attracted any private buyers at foreclosure auctions. Through “Make Monroe Home,” Monroe County and its partners will renovate this “zombie home” while providing educational opportunities for young people. As part of the program, Monroe County’s partnership with BOCES 1 and BOCES 2 will provide high school students with an opportunity to work beside local contractors and learn skilled trades. By providing students with a hands-on experience, this program will give them the skills they need to join the workforce and support their families. As a high school teacher, it is exciting to see that we are expanding opportunities for high school students to learn about career opportunities while at the same time helping local families

achieve the dream of homeownership. Monroe County has also partnered with the Greater Rochester Housing Partnership (GRHP) for the “Make Monroe Home” program. GRHP will provide construction oversight, environmental remediation, contractor selection, and structural and aesthetic renovations to this property. GRHP will also market and sell this home to first-time home buyers or veterans of the U.S. military who have secured affordable financing and have completed buyer education. The first property has been funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Monroe County Industrial Development Corporation. This program is a major step forward in the fight against “zombie properties” and improving Monroe County neighborhoods. At the same time, it is providing young people with job training opportunities that will prepare them for a lifetime of success. The selection process for the second property is already underway and I am looking forward to seeing this project expand and help families find affordable and safe homes. For more information on this program, visit https://www.monroe-county.gov/makemonroehome. Mike Zale Monroe County Legislature, District 20

More ridiculous sanctuary city comments In her “Opinion” piece Catherine White of Brockport (Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, September 2, 2018) continues to press the idea that open borders are not a problem for America and that those who enter the United States illegally should be immediately forgiven for breaking our laws. You cannot protect or sustain a nation without borders and laws. You cannot pick and choose which laws you obey. If you disagree with a law then work to change it. Anyone who seriously believes that the United States can survive as a nation while allowing anyone and everyone to simply cross our borders is either a fool or a zealot.

We live in the most generous nation in the world and a great nation. Lastly, Ms. White should consult a dictionary when submitting a letter. The last and least common use of the term “alien” is someone from “outer space” and illegal alien is the correct term for those who enter a country illegally. Ms. White’s humorous attempt to connect the dots between Native Americans, traditional immigrants, and illegal aliens fails on the face of it.
