The Brockport Village Board announces the hiring of Brockport Police Department’s Lt. Mark T. Cuzzupoli as Brockport Police Chief. Cuzzupoli will be replacing long time Police Chief Daniel P. Varrenti, who is retiring March 31, 2018. Lt. Cuzzupoli has been a full-time member of the Brockport Police Department for 22 years. He inherits a fully staffed, well-run, accredited police department of 15 full-time members, and the experience of working for and with Chief Varrenti during his 16 years of dedicated service to the Village. A Brockport High School graduate and a graduate of the College at

Brockport, Cuzzupoli brings a local focus to the department. Mayor Margay Blackman commented, “Mark Cuzzupoli has already assumed a significant leadership role in the police department. He knows the officers, their individual personalities and strengths. A strong advocate of community policing, he is a pleasure to work with.” Upon announcement, Lt. Cuzzupoli responded, “I am both honored and humbled that Mayor Blackman and the Village Board have the confidence in me to lead the Brockport Police Department as their next Police Chief.” Provided information

Forsythe awarded Purple Heart on 21st anniversary of shooting Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn presented Undersheriff Andrew Forsythe with the Purple Heart medal on December 4, 2017, marking the 21st anniversary of Forsythe being shot in the line of duty. On December 4, 1996, at 3:20 p.m., while on routine patrol, Deputy Forsythe initiated a traffic stop for a loud muffler at Stonewood Village on East Henrietta Road in Henrietta. Upon approaching the vehicle the passenger attempted to exit and flee the scene. While Forsythe attempted to stop the male, the suspect turned and shot Forsythe with a handgun, striking him multiple times. Although seriously injured, Forsythe was able to radio for help. Though it was a long road, Forsythe was able to make a full recovery and return to duty. “For Drew to not only fully recover from serious injuries but rise through the ranks and ultimately be appointed undersheriff is a testament to his tenacity.” said Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn. “This speaks volumes to his character and determination as an individual. He is a shining example of the

quality of people we employ at the Sheriff ’s Office” It is for his dedication to duty and devotion to the community that Undersheriff Andrew P. Forsythe was awarded the Purple Heart medal.

Letchworth State Park named #1 Best Attraction in New York State It’s no surprise that people who visit Letchworth State Park fall in love with it and tell the world and now, yet again, the park has solidified its popularity by being voted the #1 Best Attraction in New York State. In the most recent USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice for Best Attraction in New York State, Letchworth came out on top. “It’s somewhat humbling to know that this great park means so much to so many people. We are thankful to everyone who sees Letchworth as special and we continue to be honored by these testimonies,” stated General Park Manager Roland Beck. “We are also very proud to know that the Top 3 Attractions in this poll happen to be in our back yard. Watkins Glen State Park and The Corning Museum of Glass are great attractions and we are encouraging visitors to spend time at all three.” Letchworth State Park, known as the “Grand Canyon of the East” saw over 750,000 visitors in 2016 and is on track to exceed that number in 2017. The recent annual event, Letchworth’s Arts and Crafts

weekend, a collaboration with the Arts Council of Wyoming County, greeted 64,000 visitors in just a three-day period. With over 65 miles of hiking, biking, snowmobiling and cross country skiing trails in addition to the new, state-of-theart Humphrey Nature Center offering history and performing arts programs, guided walks, tours and both a summer and winter lecture series coupled with park camping, kayaking, swimming pool, whitewater rafting and even the opportunity to take a hot air balloon ride over the gorge, Letchworth offers a well-rounded natural experience for everyone. Letchworth is operated by New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation which oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 69 million people annually. For more information on any of these recreation areas, call 518-474-0456 or visit www.parks.ny.gov. Provided information

Eight women of Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencerport have completed a large, quilted banner depicting the creation of the world as told in Genesis chapters one and two. The banner, over ten feet long and nearly four feet high, has been hung in the sanctuary of the church. The art piece consists of eight connected panels, each panel illustrating one day in the work of creation. The pre-creation world is indicated by the dark, disordered panel on the left side of the banner. The pastel panel on the right side includes the tree of life and symbolizes a day of rest because the work of creation has been completed. The women who made the banner are shown in the photo. In the front row from the left are: Ginny O’Keefe, Ellie Graupman, Sandy Hoover, Carlynn Gebhardt and Ruth Hagmier. In the back row are: Carol Ernsthausen, Linda Behrens and Carole Newsome. Northwood donates 75 bags of clothes to Willow House The Social Justice Committee at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton recently held a clothing drive to bring awareness to Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The drive was a resounding success with over 75 bags of clothing being donated to the Willow Domestic Violence Center in Rochester. Willow Domestic Violence Center has provided services for the Greater Rochester community for nearly 40 years. Each year, Willow Center reaches more than 7,000 people in Monroe County. In 2015, Willow Center changed its name from Alternatives for Battered Women (ABW) to better reflect the breadth of services provided and clients served. Willow Center is the only New York State certified domestic violence service provider serving Monroe County. The Center provides a full-continuum of free and confidential services, without judgement. The Northwood Social Justice Committee is led by Teachers Candice Hudson, Kristin Coon and Rachel Pignagrande. Provided information

Gifts of a Lifetime Maryellen Giese

Part One of two by Doug Hickerson In the season of gift-giving, I asked several of our local citizens what very meaningful or significant gift they have received in their lifetime. Thinking of “gift” broadly, it could be material, but more likely, wise words, an intervention, or an incident, that made a major impact on them. It might have been realized as a gift only in retrospect. Below (alphabetically) are the moving messages in the first of a two-part series.

Christopher W. Albrecht

Teacher, Fred W. Hill School 4th grade, Brockport Central School District 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year I was 29 when I discovered backcountry hiking. It was by accident that I got stranded in northern Manitoba, Canada on a geology dig. After a fiveday solo hike to civilization that nearly cost me my life, I had discovered a part of me that I never knew existed. I love the solitude of backpacking and backcountry hiking. Since 2001, I have been trekking all over the United States and Canada. Our National Parks and Forests are America’s greatest treasures. When I leave civilization, I rediscover myself. The gift of nature, once you are immersed in it, is that many of the complexities of our modern world vanish. Food, water, campsites and the wilderness become the predominant thoughts, and primal instincts take over. Life gets simpler. And, when I emerge from the wild, I feel that I am better suited to serve as a husband, dad, friend and teacher.

Bill Andrews

Deputy Mayor/Trustee and Historian emeritus, Village of Brockport Professor emeritus, Ph.D., The College at Brockport, State University of New York Two gifts have been very, very special for me. The first was Monika Wickert, who entered my life in 1967 and was my beloved wife for 42 years until she died in 2011. She forged our six children into a loving, congenial, supportive family, treating them all with the same loving solicitude, making them all parts of the same happy family. She was a model of devoted, selfless service to others. The other very special gift is Pat Denk. She came into my life last June and has given me the feminine companionship that I so missed since Monika’s death and so craved. She has returned my affection a hundredfold and made me feel special again.

Director, Sweden Senior Singers, 2003 to present Director, Hochstein Youth Singers, 2002-present Former teacher, Vocal Music & Choruses, grades 5 - 12, Music Department Chair, Brockport Central School District (1971 to 2002, Retired). My gift is time. Time after retiring to continue doing things I love and have gotten pretty good at over the years. Time for singing or sharing a belly laugh. Time to squish as much as I possibly can into each and every day… wait! Everybody’s gift is time! What I’ve been given that’s unique is energy! Wow, do I ever like and appreciate that I have energy! I can thank my mother’s good genes for that (and recently, coffee at lunch). Hmmm … the majority of my sentences end in an exclamation mark! At this point in my life, I find that I can harness energy in both youth and seniors! Whoo hoo! That’s a gift that keeps on giving!

Heidi R. Macpherson, Ph.D. President, The College at Brockport, State University of New York

I am lucky that at several points in my life, when I haven’t felt up to the task, I’ve had someone standing beside who has said, “Of course you can do that!” From my mother who started many discussions with me with the phrase “When you go to college…” to mentors and peers who pushed me to accept challenges I might otherwise have shied away from, I have been surrounded by people who have encouraged and guided me. My advice to anyone now is, if someone says they see something in you - believe them! If they see it, it’s there - and your task is to see it, too, and grow to be the person they expect you to be. Next week’s issue, December 17, will have the stories of Terry Carbone, Shawn Halquist, Kevin G. Johnson, and Rosie Rich. Photos here are by Dianne Hickerson except for Heidi R. Macpherson’s and Bill Andrews’ which were provided.

by T.R. Hendrick From early reports here in New York’s southern zone, the deer gun season has produced some big bucks, but it appears that the overall harvest is down. The general consensus among my deer hunting buddies is that they are seeing less deer and very few hunters. I’m not really sure why this would be because the weather has been quite decent for most of the gun season. Maybe the fact that there has been no snow to speak of could be part of the reason; there is nothing a deer hunter likes better than a nice fresh blanket of white snow. It brightens the woods as if turning on a light and any deer movement can be much easier to detect with that white backdrop. If you don’t have any venison in your freezer when the regular gun season ends on December 10, you still have an opportunity to hunt the late bow and muzzleloader seasons in this section of the state (southern zone) which runs from December 11-19. Late season deer hunting is a whole different ball game, so I contacted local whitetail expert Larry DiMarco for some tips on connecting with these pressured deer with a muzzleloader or a bow. Larry has killed more deer in the late season than most deer hunters do during the early bow and regular gun season combined. Here is what Larry divulged: “If you want to get a crack at a late-season whitetail, forget about your treestands that were productive during the rut. You must hunt late season whitetails at food sources; as the weather gets colder, the deer have to eat more often. “But first you must figure out where the deer have disappeared to after all the pressure of the gun season. They usually head to any place where the hunters won’t go, like those small out-of-the-way parcels that no one in their right mind would think a deer could be hiding in, such as tiny stands of thick cover in the middle of an open field, hedgerows, small stands of cattails, or unmowed grasses and weeds in the middle of a cut corn lot. Anyplace big enough to hide a Volkswagen can hold deer. “If you are hunting with a bow, look at properties that are off limits during the gun season. Places like public or corporate properties that prohibit the discharge of a weapon such as parks, golf courses, airports, ski resorts and wood lots adjacent to manufacturing sites. Obviously, these spots won’t work for muzzleloader hunter who must hunt in locations where it is legal to a discharge a firearm. They need to look close at places like thick creek-bottoms, swamps, uncut corn lots, overgrown fields of multi-flora rose, and any other chunk of real estate that for one reason or another prohibits human intrusion can also harbor herds of harassed whitetails. “Once you find the spots where these skittish deer are bedding, look for the closest place they can find a meal. Corn fields, alfalfa lots and hay mowing are great food sources, but if you can find an abandoned apple orchard that can be a real hot spot. You can hunt the food source, but keep your stand back far enough so that the deer are able to comfortably enter the food source and begin feeding. Back away from the chow line by another 75 or 100 yards. Get deeper into the woods and higher in the

trees. With today’s modern muzzleloading equipment, you should take advantage of their extended range; it will keep the approaching deer more comfortable. “Better yet, position yourself off the food source and hunt the travel corridor or transition and staging areas leading from bedding to the destination food. Try to find the trails they use coming and going and intercept them as they sneak back and forth to those feeding grounds and their new daytime resting ground. Concentrate on hunting the first and last hour of the day, most pressured deer will not move until low light. Remember that there are no leaves left on the trees now so, if possible, conceal your stand within a thick pine tree, or on the opposite side of the tree you expect the deer to approach from. If you have the nerve control, remain seated and shoot after the deer has passed by; that way they are less likely to see the raising movement of your bow or muzzleloader. “And, of course, wind direction is critical, stay out of your stand until the conditions are perfect. If you are targeting a mature, trophy-caliber buck, remember that they are typically the last to enter a food source. Keep the existing deer comfortable; know that the boss is back in the woods evaluating the situation. “We all practice shooting our bow before season and we should do the same with our muzzleloaders. Take time to know and maximize your comfortable range. Many of today’s muzzleloaders are capable of effectively shooting out to 250 yards. But that kind of accuracy takes time at the bench, mixing and matching the right bullet and charge, and ample practice pulling the trigger.” I would like to thank Larry for his tips on harvesting late season whitetails. Lastly, I again ask that the deer hunters please be safe out there. I saw earlier this season that a Chautauqua County woman was shot and killed while walking her dogs by a hunter who mistook her for a deer. Moron isn’t a strong enough word to describe this dope. He should go to jail and the key should be thrown in the Chautauqua Lake. There is nothing about a human that looks like a deer. Know your target!

Blue Devils off to 3-0 start by Warren Kozireski Brockport led by as many as 12 points in the first half and never trailed on their way to a 50-43 girls basketball win at Churchville-Chili and a 3-0 start to the season. Junior co-captain Bryn Hayes hit a pair of three-pointers and a free throw and senior co-captain Amanda Lucas added a late trey to stake the Blue Devils to a 14-5 first quarter lead. Saints juniors Paige Shipley and Tyler Burgess opened the second quarter with a trey and field goal respectively to get Churchville-Chili to within four, but Brockport went on an 8-0 run led by Doralis Allen’s six points. C-C sophomore Emma Laureano hit a pair of three-pointers early in the second half to bring the Saints to within four

points of the lead, but the Blue Devils went on a 9-2 run late in the third quarter highlighted by three free throws and a field goal by Hayes along with a put-back by Lizzie Schultheis to extend the lead to nine. The Blue Devils extended the lead to as many as 12 on a Lizzie Reynolds trey with less than four minutes remaining before sealing the win at the free throw line. Hayes led Brockport with 14 points, Allen had 12 points and Lee ten. Churchville-Chili was paced by Burgess’s 20 points with Mikayla Shipley adding nine in their first game of the season. Brockport will host Greece Odyssey (12/12) and Brighton (12/14) before a fivegame road swing. The Saints will play five consecutive home games starting December 15 with Greece Arcadia.

ReQua triple-double paces Eagles by Warren Kozireski Senior Taylor ReQua scored ten of her game-high 15 points in the first half and Kendall ran out to a 13-0 lead on their way to a 37-15 girls basketball win over Holley. ReQua knocked down two treys and a free throw while junior Jenna Regan added a put-back as the Eagles led 9-0 after the first eight minutes. Sophomore Lizzie Sutphen scored twice to open the second quarter before Holley’s Delilah Grathouse hit a runner about halfway through the stanza for the first Hawks points. Kendall added 11 points in the third quarter with senior Lyndsay Wright hit-

ting a free throw and a lay-up and junior Kaitlyn Gregory ending the period with back-to-back field goals to extend the lead to 27-8. The teams played evenly in the fourth quarter as the Hawks’ Julia Smith and Abby Williams hit jumpers and sophomore Olivia Radford a three-pointer. ReQua added 11 rebounds and ten steals to her 15 points for the Eagles. Regan added seven points, Sutphen had six and Wright finished with five points, ten rebound and a pair of steals. Sophomore Brittany Marks also chipped in with seven rebounds. Holley’s Radford led the Hawks with seven points, Madison Marsh had three with Smith and Williams each adding two.

Benson, Nau, Enser lead Cadets, Rangers to rare tie by Warren Kozireski Spencerport’s 400-freestyle relay team of Ian Gillis, Zachary Nau, Colin Schultz and Nolan Benson touched less than one-half second ahead of Hilton in the final event to complete a late Rangers comeback as Hilton and the Rangers tied 88-88 in boy’s swimming. Benson and Nau each had two individual firsts and two relay team firsts for the Rangers. Benson won the 200-freestyle in 1:55.95 and the 100-freestyle in :49.82 while Nau touched first in the 50-freestyle in :23.47 and the 100-backstroke in 1:01.95.

In addition to the 400-relay, both were part of the winning meet-opening 200medley relay with Gillis and Schultz in 1:46.50. Andrew Cole was the other individual winner for the Rangers taking the 100breaststroke in 1:07.16. Hilton’s Jared Enser won both the 200individual medley and the 500-freestyle in 2:10.71 and 5:13.02 respectively. Cadet Gianluca Antonini won diving with 109.95 points and the team of Alexander Morreale, Thomas Podgers, Alex Gargano and Payton Labue took the 200-freestyle in 1:37.40.

Northwood students explore heritage with Worldwide Culture Swap

Addie Sloan, a fifth grader at Northwood Elementary School, takes notes on the items that she found in her Worldwide Culture Swap box.

Two fifth grade classes at Northwood Elementary School now know much more about their fellow classmates and the cultures that shaped them as individuals thanks to participating in a Worldwide Culture Swap. The idea was started by a mother living in France who was interested in different cultures and wanted to introduce her children to the world in a fun, visual and personal way. She had an idea that people could connect and learn about the world by swapping boxes of items that represented their culture. She started a blog introducing the swap and now families around the world are participating. At Northwood, students created boxes with five carefully selected items to represent their culture/cultures. “Countries and cultures from all over the world are represented at our school,” said Erin Cavallaro, who along with Holly Duford, recreated the idea of a Worldwide Culture Swap for students. On the day of the swap, students brought in their culture boxes and each student received a box from another student, which they opened and investigated. After writing down what they observed and learned from the items, they wrote letters back to the box curator. Addie Sloan opened a box with items from the Ukraine. “I like how different the words are and how the money looks,” she observed. She also learned that the shirt enclosed was believed to protect those who wore it and that the Trident means freedom. “This person put a lot of effort into this box,” she said. “Even though the things are from a different country, I can still understand what they mean.” Collin Wegman opened a box with a book, beads and a tapestry from Yemen. “It looks like some Yemen books go backwards,” he observed from looking at the Quran. At the end of the day, parents were invited to see the projects and the boxes were returned to each family. Provided information

Village of Brockport earns Clean Energy Community designation The Village of Brockport announced it has been designated a Clean Energy Community by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), recognizing its leadership in reducing energy use, cutting costs and driving clean energy locally. Announced by Governor Cuomo in August of 2016, the $16 million Clean Energy Communities initiative supports local government leaders across the State to implement energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable development projects in their communities. Clean Energy Communities advance the Governor’s Reforming the Energy (REV) strategy by demonstrating the importance of communities in helping New York reach its Clean Energy Standard of 50 percent of the state’s electricity coming from renewable energy resources by 2030. Brockport received the designation for completing 4 of 10 high-impact clean energy actions identified by NYSERDA as part of the Clean Energy Communities initiative. In addition, the designation gives the village an opportunity

to apply for up to $50,000 toward additional clean energy projects, with no local cost share. Mayor Margay Blackman noted, “The Village has worked diligently to get to this point and is proud to be designed a Clean Energy Community. We will continue our efforts to reduce energy use, cut costs in doing so, and look to more clean energy resources.” To earn the Clean Energy Community designation, the Village of Brockport completed the following high-impact clean energy actions: Unified Solar Permit – streamlining the permitting/approval process for solar panel installation; Benchmarking – adoption of a policy to report energy use; Energy Code Enforcement Training – code enforcement officer trained in energy code best practices; and Clean Fleets -installed an electric vehicle charging station. Sigillo Chiropractic Chiropractors Offer Alternative to NSAIDS For Back Pain

People suffering from back pain should consider first trying chiropractic services and other non-drug therapies in light of a new research review that found common over-the-counter and prescription pain medications have limited effectiveness for back pain and raise the risk of side-effects, according to the American Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. Chiropractic Association (ACA). The review, published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, examined 35 randomized placebo-controlled trials, encompassing 6,000 patients, to determine the effectiveness and safety on non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for spinal pain. The authors of the report found that NSAIDs provided “clinically unimportant effect” when compared with patients who received only a placebo. Meanwhile, those who used NSAIDs had a 2.5 times greater risk of experiencing gastrointestinal disorders. “At present, there are no simple analgesics that provide clinically important effects for spinal pain over placebo,” the authors noted. The news about NSAIDs follows reports last year that prescription opioids also have limited effectiveness for back pain - one of the most common causes of disability worldwide. The American Chiropractic Association urges people to try non-drug approaches to back pain relief first, before resorting to over-the-counter or prescription medications. In addition to spinal manipulation, chiropractors can offer a range of non-drug therapies for back pain and recommend exercises and important lifestyle changes to help prevent future back pain and injury.

Sweden Town Board tables zoning change by Kristina Gabalski Sweden Town Board members have decided to wait to make a decision on a zoning change for two adjacent parcels of land at 4740 Lake Road and 25 Crestview Drive until the owner of the property can be present for a board meeting. A resolution to change the zoning of the parcels from residential to commercial was tabled during the regular meeting of the board November 28. Engineer Kris Schultz of Schultz Associates attended the meeting, but property owners Samuel Simone and Christopher Dempsey were not able to attend. Developers are proposing a one-story 5,000 sq. ft. professional office building as a possibility for the site. Schultz spoke to the board early in the meeting saying the site has been identified in the town’s comprehensive plan for re-zoning. “This type of use would make sense,” he said. “It’s been a hot topic for years. Developers have requested re-zoning of the parcel three times before. During a public hearing October 24, many residents of the Crestview Drive area expressed concerns over the change and said they do not want any more commercial development in the area. The parcels are located on Route 19 across from the entrance to the Wegman’s plaza. Developers have argued that the site is not a prime one for residential development and that now is the time to re-zone the property correctly. Kris Schultz said the town could re-zone to commercial with restrictions to ensure the property acts as a transition area between commercial and residential areas. “We would retain existing trees,” Schultz said, and there would be green space around the proposed office building to, “mimic front yards along Lake Road (Route 19),” he explained. Schultz said he heard concerns of residents during the October 24 meeting, but because the site is not well-suited for residential development, without a re-zone it will, “just sit there and fester.”

Developers are seeking to re-zone two lots - one on Route 19 and one behind on Crestview Drive in the Town of Sweden - from residential to commercial ... for a proposed professional office building. K. Gabalski photo. Town Councilperson Bob Muesebeck expressed concern that changing the zoning of the parcel could lead to a “domino” effect along the residential section of Lake Road to the north. Town Board members did pass resolutions regarding the environmental review of the re-zone: designating itself as Lead Agency for the review and making a non-significance SEQR determination for the re-zone. Schultz Associates has completed a Part 1 Full Environmental Assessment Form regarding the change in zoning.

Additionally, the Town Board designated itself as Lead Agency for the environmental review of the rezone of a vacant parcel of land on Fourth Section Road. Developers of a 6.8 parcel of land on the northwest corner of Redman Road are proposing to build 49 market rate apartment units in two story buildings with private garages. The proposed zoning change for the Fourth Section Road parcel is from R1-2S one-family residential to MR-1 multiple residence.

16 Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - December 10, 2017

Charles Dickens comes to GCC to support History Club The Genesee Community College History Club will kick off the holiday season as Charles Dickens, played by WKBW-TV’s Meteorologist Mike Randall, presents “A Christmas Carol.” All are invited to the College’s Batavia Campus on December 18 at 7 p.m. to enjoy this festive and heartwarming storytelling experience. A multifaceted actor, Randall studied both theatre and meteorology in school and since 1983, Randall has reported the weather on WKBW-TV in Buffalo. An award-winning reporter, his interview repertoire includes such talents as Willie Nelson, Jerry Lewis, John Candy, Steve Allen, Gregory Peck and Robert Goulet. In

September 2017, Randall was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Back in 1868, Charles Dickens toured the country bringing his classic novel, “A Christmas Carol” to audiences everywhere. Nearly a century and a half ago, Dickens’ performances were completely sold out in Buffalo. For the last decade, with only a replica of Dickens’ famous velvet, fringed reading lectern and a copy of “A Christmas Carol,” Randall has been transforming himself into Dickens, recreating the original tour atmosphere in stages, halls, classrooms and many other venues. Randall performs in a period costume with a beard and wavy hair, and through his ex-

pert theatrics he brings Charles Dickens to life. He plays each of the novel’s characters with distinguishing voices and mannerisms capturing all of the subtle comedic timing of Dickens’ original work. The performance will take place at GCC’s Batavia Campus in room T102 of the Conable Technology Building. Tickets for the performances are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Advanced ticket purchases are strongly recommended as seating is limited. Proceeds from the performance will go to the Genesee Community College History Club.

“Coordinating the event is part of the service learning experiences for GCC students and members of the College’s History Club,” Derek D. Maxfield, GCC’s associate history professor said. “This event is a great opportunity for students to learn about the value of community engagement as well as history, and it is a terrific opportunity for local families and friends to enjoy a festive holiday event that is fun for all ages.” For advanced tickets or more information, contact Associate Professor of History Derek D. Maxfield at (585) 343-0055 ext. 6288, or via email: ddmaxfield@genesee. edu.

Gifts for gardeners by Kristina Gabalski

Since 1935

If you’re looking to find a gift for the gardener in your life or just looking to treat yourself, there’s plenty of useful, fun and beautiful items available this Christmas that can be enjoyed right now or saved with anticipation of next year’s gardening season. Gloves are always a welcome gift for gardeners. They are something you absolutely cannot do without and high quality gloves make such a difference for everything from pulling weeds, to digging in the soil, to clearing brush. Consider giving gloves meant for rose gardening - they are extra-long and are great for difficult chores such as removing poisonous vines, pulling out or pruning anything with prickers or thorns, and even bug removal. Seeds are always a fun and welcome gift for gardeners, and this year Burpee seeds - www.burpee.com - is offering a heritage seed collection packaged in collectable Burpee innovated seed packets. The vintage graphics are very beautiful. Five heirloom vegetables are featured including Chinese Giant Sweet Pepper and Golden Bantam Corn. The graphics featured are catalog covers from the debut of the seeds. The Golden Bantam Corn packet features cover art from 1921, for example. Garden graphics are always beautiful and you can look for vintage poster art at local antique shops and book stores. There are great sources of reproduction pieces online which are interesting to look through. The posters can be displayed inside as part of your decor, which can help keep everything looking lush indoors even when its drab mid-winter outdoors. Lanterns are popular right now and you can find them everywhere from garden centers to grocery stores, especially during the holidays. Lanterns look beautiful set in the garden or hanging from garden hooks, and add a festive air when lit at night during any season. They are also great for decorating your porch or featuring natural seasonal elements placed inside instead of a candle. New garden tools are always welcome. You might consider including a tool sharpener or a soil thermometer along with trowels, clippers and weeding tools. I’m also seeing boot scrapers, which are great for cleaning off muddied-up outdoor footwear.

Wednesday Night Auction Starting at 4 p.m.

A new collection of consignments every week, ranging from antiques to tools, artwork to furniture, sporting goods to kitchenware. Today’s trends and nostalgia from every decade – all the raw materials needed to re-purpose, reuse and upcycle. Preview at www.bontragerauction.com RefReshments available

Sweet, tiny and easy to care for miniature plants are a fun and beautiful way for gardeners to keep “growing” through the long winter months. An assortment with a planter would make a great Christmas gift for anyone who loves to grow things. These are available at Sara’s Garden Center in Brockport. K. Gabalski photo. Don’t forget garden-related items are fun and educational for the young people on your list. Garden-based learning is big right now as children can learn many skills - from creative writing to mathematics - while they are enjoying time in the garden. Look for insect hotels which look like little houses with lots of tiny compartments for solitary beneficial insects. You can also look for books and online for directions on how to make your own. It is not difficult and can be done with garden materials you might otherwise throw away. Making insect hotels sparks creativity as the finished product can take on any look - even a fantasy woodland cottage. Another idea for children is a fairytale garden. Purchase seeds for items like beans - “Jack in the Beanstalk;” peas - “The Princess and the Pea;” and flowering vines. Pick a small area to plant and tend the fairytale garden next growing season and enjoy story time outside with your little ones. Larger seeds for easy growing annuals like sunflowers and nasturtiums also work well and make the garden a special spot for imaginative play.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! This Christmas we celebrate and give thanks for our wonderful friends and clients.
