After several years of growing her hair, Ferris Goodridge Legion Post #330 member Jane Decker decided in September to cut her hair as a fundraiser for Wigs for Kids. She agreed to donate one inch of hair for every $100 raised, up to 18 inches. When enough funds were collected, she made an appointment to have her hair cut on November 30, allowing time for additional donations. The purpose of this fundraiser was to raise awareness of the cost to make custom human hair wigs ($1,800 to $2,800) using up to 30 ponytails. Wigs for Kids never charges the family in need. Donated funds help cover the expense of creating wigs and providing care products, services and support.

I made a New Year’s resolution at the beginning of 2023 – to plant at least one eastern white pine tree in my yard. Eastern white pine is a native evergreen found throughout the eastern portion of North America. It likes cool and humid conditions and grows well in a variety of soils, University of Maine Extension says. This beautiful tree has soft, 2.5 to 5 inch long blue-green needles which grow in clusters of five. White pines have been known to live up to 200 years or more, growing to a majestic height of 150 feet, and up to 3 to 4 feet in diameter. It is easy to see why you need some space in your landscape to grow this lofty tree. On young trees, the bark is thin and smooth, as the tree ages, the bark becomes dark grey to brown and is fissured, with deep ridges and indents. White pine cones are lovely. The tree is monoecious, which means it produces both male and female cones. Cones are formed in the spring during May and June. Male cones have overlapping scales which open to release pollen. Female cones start out green in color and can be up to 8 inches long and one inch wide. The cones ripen to brown when seeds are mature and ready to be released. White pines are used for Christmas trees because of their pyramidal shape and soft needles. They are also harvested for lumber. White pine provides shelter for woodland animals and birds. Squirrel and deer sometimes feed on the seeds. White pine grows relatively quickly compared to other tree species in its habitat range, the University of Maine says. If you have white pine in your landscape, protect it from road salt, winter wind, and ice. White pines are susceptible to white pine blister rust, which can kill the tree. Both gooseberry and wild currant can harbor rust. Keep these plants away from white pine. Pam Shade, a horticulturist and educator at Cornell Botanic Gardens, wrote in 2022

Eastern white pines are stunning evergreens. They can live hundreds of years and grow to be over 200 feet tall. Branches are horizontal and grow from straight trunks. Photo by Kristina Gabalski. about the significance of white pine to Native Americans. The tree symbolizes strength, protection and longevity to members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. “The white pine is known as the Great Tree of Peace,” Shade wrote. “The tree figures prominently in historical events leading to the creation of the Great Law of Peace, which guides Haudenosaunee social and political culture.” She explained that when the alliance was formed between leaders of the Mohawk, the Oneida, the Onondaga, the Cayuga and the Seneca nations, they met beneath the branches of an eastern white pine tree, which became known as the Great Tree of Peace. Additionally, the five-clustered needles of the white pine represent the five original Haudenosaunee nations, Shade wrote. It is now December of 2023, and I have not fulfilled my New Year’s resolution to plant a white pine. It is probably now a little too late to plant before the end of this year, but it will be at the top of the garden to-do list for 2024!

Once upon a time, for many Rochester area youngsters, Christmas holiday excitement went off the charts with a ride on the Midtown Plaza Monorail. Suspended high above the mall shops, riding in the diminutive train was right up there with meeting Santa himself as a high point of the season. Memories of those rides are rekindled at the New York Museum of Transportation, in Rush, where the monorail cars and apparatus are on display. The monorail will be one of many features when the museum presents its annual “Holly Trolley Rides” December 10, 16 and 17. Event Chair Doug Anderson has the museum decked out in holiday decor, and there will be cookies and hot chocolate, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, as well as the museum’s unique two-mile round trip vintage trolley ride. Midtown Plaza was the nation’s first urban indoor shopping mall, and shortly after its 1962 opening, the monorail was introduced as a feature attraction for families at holiday time. Each season, sturdy stanchions and 400 feet of overhead rail were erected to carry the two-car trains

on their two miles per hour trip around the mall. The cars had a capacity of 16 children, each child nervously peering down at shoppers and anticipating an interview with the Big Man. A side exhibit at the museum displays a collection of coins, ticket stubs, gum wrappers and small toys gathered when museum volunteers were preparing the cars for the exhibit. At one time each item was clutched by tiny fingers, no doubt dropped in all the excitement. The monorail exhibit is complete with the original overhead rail system manufactured by the Louden Machinery Company of Fairfield, Iowa. The design was originally patented for handling heavy equipment in factories. In the late 1940s, Rocket Express monorail ride systems were created for use in department stores throughout the country. The Midtown system operated each holiday season until 2007. Reservations for the Holly Trolley Rides event can be made at www.nymtmuseum. org/Christmas. Tickets are $17 for adults and $13 for youths age three to 14. Provided information and photo

Jensen introduces policies to enhance literacy and reading education Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C-Greece) is introducing legislation that aims to enhance literacy education and reading instruction for schools across New York, and strengthen the state’s national ranking. Jensen hopes these common-sense policies will be considered during the upcoming legislative session and will improve outcomes across early educational levels. The first piece of legislation would establish statewide literacy education programs for early education that include statewide parents-as-teachers programs, a reading program that would provide support for reading intervention services and a reading intervention program (A.8315). Young people in New York State are currently facing a crisis in literacy education, as we trail behind the rest of the nation, having enacted no state reading laws between 2019 and 2022. Jensen says establishing statewide standards and expectations for

literacy education programs would address this issue, and give students, parents, teachers and schools the tools they need to help build a stronger educational foundation. The additional bills would require new teachers to complete training for evidence-based reading instruction to help ensure teachers are prepared to meet the needs of their students (A.8316), as well as require certain teachers who provide literacy instruction to obtain a literacy endorsement (A.8320). Jensen says these measures should empower districts, teachers, and parents to determine the most effective approaches to achieve literacy goals, especially during the crucial early education period from kindergarten through grade three. “I hope in the new year, partisan politics can take a back seat and allow for policies that give our education system

the necessary boost to help children succeed. The future of our young generation and their education is critically important and should be a priority for my colleagues on both sides of the aisle. A good education in all subjects is something we owe to all the students in New York,” said Jensen. Provided information

Opinion/Comments

CCE Monroe offering workshops on Managing Spotted Lanternfly Colonies of Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) have been found in Monroe County. These invasive insects spread fast through their breeding habits. Further, their egg masses can survive harsh winters and produce 30 to 50 nymphs with each hatching. SLF are a threat to agriculture, in particular, the grape industry, and the NYS economy as a whole. CCE Monroe’s Natural Resources program in partnership with NYS Integrated Pest Management and CCE Monroes Diagnostics Lab will be providing workshops for local municipalities and organizations upon request. The workshop will provide training in: how to best support mitigation efforts in stopping the spread of SLF, accessing resources available for public outreach, SLF behavioral patterns, threats, and concerns regarding the invasive insect on agriculture, providing current updates, and

‘Tis the season to say thank you

common misconceptions around the SLF. This workshop will be offered for $100 to municipalities and organizations. If interested, reach out to CCE Monroe’s Natural Resources Educator, Antonius Chess Jr. at arc279@cornell.edu or at 585753-2564. Provided information and photo

Thank you to everyone who donated blood this year at American Legion Post #330 in Spencerport. During 2023, a total of 116 units of blood were collected helping 348 people. The donated blood went to help patients at Strong Hospital, Albany Medical Center Hospital, Sisters of Charity in Buffalo, Arnot Ogden Med Center in Elmira, Samaritan Hospital in Watertown which also assists those at Ft. Drum, and the states of Georgia, Maine, and Maryland benefited from your donations as well. Thank you to Spencerport Rotary, especially Joe Marasco who helped organize the filling of 30 stockings that went to Bethesda Military Medical Hospital, along with Legion Post #330 members and the Chili Se-

nior Center that donated supplies that went into 166 stockings. All totaled, 196 stockings were shipped and received, putting smiles on those that may have needed one that day. Thank you to those who supported the Craft Fair at the Legion on December 2, helping the vendors and customers get an early start on making holiday memories. Thank you to those who supported the Cartons for Christmas program by donating food, time, smiles and joy to those families in need. Spencerport is truly “Someplace Special.” Barb Marhatta, member American Legion Auxiliary Post #330

Churchville native serves at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center by Megan Brown, Navy Office of Community Outreach Seaman Bryce Phillips, a native of Churchville, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center in Panama City Beach, Florida, the largest diving facility in the world. Phillips graduated from Churchville-Chili High School in 2022. The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Churchville. “Growing up in my hometown taught me to work hard to build a good reputation and to strive to be more than average,” said Phillips. “In the Navy, you get out of it what you put into it. If I am not slacking and leaving other people to do the work for me, it builds a good reputation for myself.” Phillips joined the Navy one year ago. “I joined the Navy because I come from a military family and I always wanted to serve my country,” said Phillips. “I also wanted to fight for our country’s freedoms.” More than 1,200 students from the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard train at Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center each year. These students include candidates for submarine SCUBA, U.S. Navy deep sea divers, Seabee underwater construction divers, joint service diving officers and explosive ordnance disposal officers. Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center houses 23 certified diver life support systems, which include two diving simulation facilities capable of pressing divers to a depth of 300 feet, an aquatics training facility with the second largest pool in the U.S., a submarine lock-out trunk that holds nearly one million gallons of water and two 133-foot Yard Diving Tenders for open ocean diving support. “Having a cadre of students who are eager to learn and extremely hardworking, ensures the future of our Navy Diver and Explosive Ordnance Disposal communities,” said Cmdr. Troy Lawson, commanding officer, Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center. Serving in the Navy means Phillips is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy. “The Navy is important to national defense because it protects our shores

Seaman Bryce Phillips. Photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Patricia Elkins, Navy Office of Community Outreach. from being invaded by foreign adversaries,” said Phillips. With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to trained sailors and a strong Navy. Phillips has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service. “I am most proud of making it through selection for dive school,” said Phillips. “Eighty percent of candidates drop out, so I am proud that I worked hard and stayed motivated to make it here.” As Phillips and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy. “Serving in the Navy means protecting my country and fighting for our freedoms,” said Phillips. Phillips is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible. “I want to thank Hull Maintenance Technician 1st Class Wilis, who was my recruiter and mentored me throughout the process of joining the Navy,” added Phillips. “I also want to thank my dad, Robert, for always being there for me and for giving me great advice as I go through my Navy career.”

King breaks NCAA pole vault record The indoor track and field season started off with a bang for Roberts Wesleyan pole vaulter Brynn King as the grad student broke the NCAA Division II pole vault record with a clearance of 14-feet 5-1/2inches. King broke the 14-year old NCAA record in her first-ever meet with the Redhawks while at the Akron Haynes Lancaster Open on December 1 hosted by the University of Akron. The record was previously held by Katelin Rains of Minnesota State set on February 21, 2009 with a vault of 14-feet 5-1/4-inches. King is now the top vaulter

It is really exciting to have the D2 record now, we had set that as a goal for me this year and it is really exciting to be able to cross that off the list.” King, who is a transfer student from Duke University came to Roberts to train under Olympic gold medalist Jenn Suhr. The coach and athlete duo have their expectations set high for both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. “I have been jumping some big bars in practice and didn’t execute as well as I wanted to this meet,” King said. “So we have some high expectations for the rest of the season and am planning on much bigger bars coming real soon.” Provided information and photo

She could always be seen welcoming nervous students and consoling first-time parents. “It has been a joy to spend the last twelve and a half years at JLU,” Nau said. “Finding this job was one of those moments in life when you know God has you in the right place.” Nau began her time at the Spencerport center as an infant Darlene Nau teacher and after several years transitioned to office manager. For as much as she has loved her work, Nau is eager to see what home life with her husband, Michael, is all about. The two, who live in Spencerport, are active in the community, including making many appearances as Santa and Mrs. Claus as part of their service through the Lions Club. JLU Child Care provides Christian education to infants, toddlers, preschool, pre-k and school age children by offering a full-day, fully licensed program at 2780 Spencerport Road. JLU recently opened a second location in Brockport across from Strong West at 122 West Avenue. Paid Advertisement
