Hilton wins third Section V girls basketball crown
by Warren KozireskiTrailing for most of the game and by as many as eight points in the third quarter, Hilton rallied while limiting top seed Victor to just eight points over the final 13:45 and won their third Section V girls basketball title with a 38-33 victory in the Class AA final held at Finger Lakes Community College.
The rally featured a pair of three-pointers by junior Elena Graziano and one from senior Ella Clark, a putback from freshman Madison Murphy, plus a pair of drives and a free throw by senior Mallory Heise.
Senior Leah Thompson, who had not scored since the first quarter, gave the Cadets the lead for good on a field goal with 33 seconds remaining in regulation and helped seal the win with a key defensive rebound and free throw along with Heise hitting two free throws with six seconds left.
“I knew we just needed to score something close to the basket because we were having trouble hitting shots from the outside and I knew it would give us the momentum to finish out the game,” Thompson said. “It was pretty exciting for me because I wasn’t expecting to be the one with the ball at the end…it just felt really good.”
Tournament Most Valuable player Mallory Heise finished with a team-high 13 points, Thompson had nine, Clark seven, Graziano four while junior Tea Cosman and Murphy chipped in two each.
“I’ve said it for a few years now that we’re willing to play any style that’s necessary to win,” Hilton head coach Dave Heise said. “We fought through the first half; we opened the game up a little bit in the third quarter going full court man-to-man. A lot of grit and a lot of determination over there.
“We’ve been building towards this for a few years. We’ve always scheduled hard, and you should see our practices – they get after each other. They deserve every bit of this…I’m really proud of them.”
Hilton adds their third trophy to the girls basketball case following previous Section V titles in 2003 and 2011.
“We really pride ourselves at being the best in the section and I think we really proved that today,” Mallory Heise said. “I’ve been thinking about March 2nd for longer that I can think of, but it just feels amazing to finally do what we came here to do.”

Sam’s Diner in Holley is closed until further notice after a portion of the building’s back wall collapsed around 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 1. Those who were inside at the time of the collapse all escaped unharmed.
Dr. Schavone’s dental office and some apartments also sustained damage.
Sam’s Diner has been a popular community gathering spot in Holley’s
Public Square since in was opened by Sam Gitsis in 1978. It is now owned by his son, George Gitsis. A large pile of debris was scattered behind the building following the partial collapse. Several fire departments and special operations units were on scene throughout the day on Friday and traffic in Public Square was shut down into the evening to prevent triggering further collapse of the structure, part of which dates
back to the late 1800s. The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
Sam’s Diner posted the following message on its Facebook page: “We are extremely thankful that nobody was hurt. We cannot express how we appreciate everyone who has reached out offering your love and support. We are humbled by all of the local fire departments, village workers, Monroe County Special Operations Unit, code enforcement officers, community members, Mayor Mark Bower, Dustin’s Pizzeria, and countless others that have been working hard to help us salvage the building and to give us their support. It really does take a village as the saying goes and we are beyond grateful! We will keep you updated with the progress.”
Rebuilding efforts are underway. The debris and unstable sections of the building have been removed and stabilizing beams were put in place. Inside framing was installed on March 4.
A GoFundMe campaign (gofund.me/207f3695) has been established to help the diner’s nearly 20 staff members while they are out of work during the rebuilding.

New income tax filing system set to open March 12
New York State and the Internal Revenue Service have created a new program that allows eligible New Yorkers to e-file their federal and state personal income tax returns for free. The program allows taxpayers to save hundreds of dollars on tax preparation fees.
The Direct File Pilot Project opens on March 12 to eligible New Yorkers reporting certain types of income and claiming certain credits and adjustments. Learn more about Direct File at https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/di-
rect-file/. Also review New York State’s Direct File eligibility requirements at https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/direct-file/direct-file-eligibility.htm.
Acting Tax Commissioner Amanda Hiller said, “I urge taxpayers to check to see whether Direct File is right for them. In this first year of the pilot project, eligibility is limited, but as the IRS and State build out the program, more taxpayers will be eligible. Direct File really is the future of taxing filing.”

Maintenance work to be performed at the Brockport Waste Weir
Ahead of the upcoming navigation season, the New York State Canal Corporation will be performing maintenance work at the Brockport Waste Weir along the Erie Canal. The work is scheduled to begin the week of March 11, 2024, and is expected to occur over a two-week period.
The waste weir is a fixed concrete structure with water control valves and gates located just west of the Smith Street Bridge in Brockport. Strategically positioned along the Erie Canal, the Canal Corporation utilizes these structures to regulate the depth of the canal.
The maintenance work will require limited clearing of vegetation overgrowth and trees to allow access to the waste weir. In addition, there may be some limited disruption to the Erie Canalway Trail while the work is performed.
Please note this project is not part of the Earthen Embankment Integrity Program (EEIP).
Direct any inquiries to Nick Melson, manager of government and community relations, at 716-2772262 or by email at Nick.Melson@canals.ny.gov.

Ogden Town Board adopts additional tax exemption benefits for veterans and first responders
On Wednesday, February 28, members of the Ogden Town Board unanimously approved measures to expand exemptions for volunteer firefighters, EMS workers and their spouses, and to increase tax exemptions for veterans.
Under current law, enrolled members of an incorporated volunteer fire company, fire department, or incorporated voluntary ambulance service qualify for a partial tax exemption on real property. Historically, spouses of enrolled members who were killed in the line of duty would lose their exemption status
up to $45,000. Additionally, the maximum exemption for Cold War Veterans with a service-connected disability has been increased to $150,000.
“It was such a privilege to join my fellow Town Board members in expanding real property tax exemptions for first responders and military veterans living in our community,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “Whether it’s serving overseas or responding to a local emergency, these brave men and women can always be counted on to put others before self and to answer our calls for help. Knights of Columbus recognized by Salvation Army
For many years, the Spencerport Council of the Knights of Columbus has assisted the Salvation Army in their Red Kettle campaign to raise funds for those who are less fortunate and to help fund their other activities that promote Christian charity.
The Council became involved when the late Past Grand Knight Pat Murray contacted the Salvation Army and asked how the Knights could help. The Council was assigned to the then Big M market in North Chili. They rang the bells in North Chili for several years and then movd to the Spencerport Tops for the last few years. The Council was often among
the top fund raisers for the time they helped out.
On February 13, the Salvation Army held the second annual Gratitude Gathering at the Hyatt Regency Rochester Grand Ballroom. They had several presentations, with one being the annual “Battle of the Bells” winners.” The Salvation Army awarded the Council with a plaque for first place in the community organizing campaign. Receiving the plaque were current Grand Knight Scott Nather, of Brockport, and Past Grand Knight Bob Rejewski. The presentation was made by Major Bethany Starkey. Assisting in this year’s campaign were Jim Downs, Community Activities Chairman for the Council, along with Larry Peck, Frank Andolina, Dave Hodder, John Greico, Ray Ehnot, Dick Gaghler, Scott Nather, Bob Rejewski, Tony and Kathy Pacilio.
The Council is grateful to Tops Friendly Markets for allowing them to hold the campaign there and to all those who generously donated to the fund.
Spencerport Council covers the parishes of St. John the Evangelist Spencerport, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brockport, St. Christopher’s in North Chili, St. Mary’s, St. Bonafice, Blessed Sacrament in Rochester, and parts of the town of Hamlin. Provided information and photos
to reduce improper payments
The Social Security Administration has published a proposed rule, “Use of Electronic Payroll Data to Improve Program Administration,” describing the agency’s plans for accessing and using information from payroll data providers to reduce improper payments, including overpayments, which improves service to customers.
Unreported, late reported, and incorrectly reported earnings are often a cause of overpayments for people who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. When a person has been overpaid, the law requires the agency to ask for repayment, which can create financial difficulties for beneficiaries.
“Social Security is taking a critically important step to reduce improper payments, including overpayments, by ensuring we receive timely and accurate wage data. These automated payroll information exchanges will address the inefficiencies associated with self-reporting and manual verification by introducing a more streamlined approach,” said Martin O’Malley, Commissioner of Social Security. “These exchanges will prevent inequities caused by improper
payments by enabling Social Security employees to adjust SSI payments before they are issued and help us more efficiently administer SSDI.”
Social Security is working to reduce wage-related improper payments by using its legal authority to establish information exchanges with payroll data providers. These exchanges will help ensure the agency receives timely and accurate wage data. These exchanges and the agency’s planned business process is called the Payroll Information Exchange (PIE).
PIE will help reduce manual reporting errors as well as the reporting burden for individuals who authorize Social Security to obtain their wage and employment information through these information exchanges and work for employers whose payroll data is available through the exchange. PIE will also help to more quickly identify wages that often go unreported or undetected and which can lead to improper payments.
People may read the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) at http://tinyurl.com/yfazs5hk. Public comment is an important part of this process and people may provide comments on the NPRM by April 15, 2024. Provided information

Hawley attends nYFB
Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C-Batavia) attended the New York Farm Bureau’s Taste of New York Reception in Albany on March 4. The event was hosted in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center and attended by county Farm Bureau members and public officials. During this time, Hawley met with local farmers and members of the Farm Bureau about the importance of New York agriculture. New York is one of the leading states for agriculture, the fifth-largest producer of dairy in the nation, and has roughly seven million acres of farmland. The industry has also created nearly 200,000 jobs, with the vast majority of farms in the state being family-owned. Hawley is proud to have been able to attend this event and hopes it will bring more awareness to one of the state’s largest industries.
“It was great to meet with so many New Yorkers yesterday who share a passion for local agriculture,” said Hawley. “As a farmer once myself, I have a special appreciation for this industry. From the grocery store to the food in your pantry, we all rely on local farms like the ones we have here in Western New York. Holding this event in Albany will shine a light on this vital industry and bring more attention to our family-owned farms.”
The program includes works by Aaron Copland, R. Nathaniel Dett, Randall Thompson, Jean Ford, and Norman Dello Joio, with Kevin Nitsch providing keyboard accompaniment. The evening will also highlight opera choruses, psalms, spirituals, and a setting by Walt Whitman.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $15 for students. They can be purchased at ROSsings.org/events or by calling 585-743-2234. Advance purchase is recommended. Provided information

Byron-Bergen wins first Section V boys basketball title
by Warren KozireskiSenior Colin Martin’s three-pointer with 3:58 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Byron-Bergen the lead for good and classmates Braedyn Chambry and Brody Baubie calmly made six of eight free throws down the stretch while sophomore Joel Lamb grabbed two defensive rebounds over the
Bees to a 52-46 victory over second-seed Alexander to win the Class C2 Section V boys basketball crown.
The Bees defeated Eugenio Maria de Hostos in the quarterfinals and York 61-60 in the semi-finals to advance.
“Obviously not shooting a lot but feeding him (Chambry) the ball is a bucket,” Baubie said. “I’ve done it (made free throws) multiple times at the end of games and free throw shooting helps us win games.
“My main thought (standing on the free throw line in the final 30 seconds) was we were going to seal the game and, being in this position for the first time if I made those, we win the first championship meant everything to me to make those.”
Byron-Bergen led for most of the first half thanks to five offensive rebounds and opened up a six-point lead in the third quarter before Alexander battled back and took a one-point lead just prior to Martin’s trey.
“Coach always says basketball is a game of runs and she said they had theirs and it was our time to get ours so that’s what we did,” Baubie said.
Chambry finished with a game-high 24 points while limiting the Alexander center to just two. Martin registered 14 points, aubie and senior Brendan pimm six each, and junior Noah Clare added two.
Baubie and Martin were named to the Class C2 All-Tournament Team along with Chambry, who was named Most Valuable player.
“I was so happy for them because they knew what was in front of them, they knew the enormity of it and it’s just incredible,” head coach and Class C Coach of the Year roxanne Noeth said.
“At Byron-Bergen we’re about to tear our gym down and restructure the whole thing, so there will never be another one (title) on the gym floor that I (grew up) playing on and that they played on, which is kind of cool, historically. How do you put that
into words…it’s been forever and today’s the day.”
“pretty great, honestly…it’s everything we dreamed of,” Chambry said. “We started in third grade playing together…we play every game for each other, beating teams that are, honestly, better than us because we play for each other and play harder than everyone else on the court because we love each other.”
Byron-Bergen boys basketball coach makes Section V history
On Saturday, March 2, 2024, roxanne Noeth made Section V athletics history by becoming the first woman to coach a boys varsity basketball team to a sectional championship in the 103-year history of the organization. The win marks the first sectional championship in Byron-Bergen boys basketball history. The only other ByronBergen basketball sectional championship was in 1984 when ninth grader Noeth was called up from JV to help the girls varsity basketball team to victory.
As a member of the championship 1984 team, Noeth carved out a place for herself in
Byron-Bergen athletics’ history, setting the single game scoring record in 1987 which was tied in 2022 by varsity boys basketball player Corden Zimmerman and broken by boys captain Braedyn Chambry this season. Noeth still holds the girls basketball single game scoring record and was inducted into the Byron-Bergen Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
After graduation, Noeth attended St. John Fisher where she played Division III basketball and softball. She is also a member of the St. John Fisher Athletics Hall of Fame. She coached collegiate w omen’s basketball at r IT before stepping away to raise her children. She returned to Byron-Bergen basketball in 2009 when she began volunteering for her children’s basketball teams. In 2017, she was hired officially as head coach of the boys varsity basketball team.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Coach Noeth and the job she has done with this program,” said Hannan. “I have watched her build the team for many years now. She is extremely knowledgeable and puts her heart and soul into giving her athletes the best opportunity possible to achieve their greatest potential. She leaves no stone unturned and is always prepared. Her passion rubs off on her team and you can see it in her players.”
trophy was a reminder of what is possible,” said Byron-Bergen Assistant principal Katie Grattan. “The future coaches of Section V are watching.”
When asked about her legacy, Noeth states, “The impact of my coaching a boys team, the impact it is having on young girls and women, it’s definitely a positive side effect, but it’s not why I coach. I love this team. I love this sport. I’m just a coach.” provided information
“It was never on my radar to be a boys basketball coach specifically,” said Noeth, “but the opportunity arose, and I’ve always had great support from the administration and community.”
Noeth was hired by Athletic Director r i ch Hannan and Superintendent p at McGee, who was High School principal at the time.
Outside of the Byron-Bergen community, Noeth noticed some raised eyebrows. Despite the abundance of men coaching girls teams, Noeth was often the only woman in the room for boys basketball. According to Noeth, the first three years as head coach were tough, but she soon made a name for herself and the team within the division. In 2023, she became the first woman to be named Section V Class C3 Coach of the Year for Boys Basketball, a title which she has kept for the 2024 season in C2.
“Coach Noeth is an excellent role model for her players and all our future coaches,” said McGee. “The Sectionals win was huge for our community, but I also feel the enormous impact it has made on the future of Section V coaching.”

OFC Creations Theatre recently announced the 2024-2025 Broadway in Brighton Series, back for a second year, after sold-out shows in nearly all performances last season. OFC’s Broadway in Brighton Series is comprised of six professional musical productions under the direction of OFC’s Executive Director Eric Vaughn Johnson, featuring performers from New York City, Los Angeles and across the country, alongside professional performers from our region.
This season’s focus is bringing beloved shows and stories of heroes of generations to the stage that are not typically performed in rochester. OFC Creations strives to tell stories that demonstrate the beauty and resilience of the human spirit and hopes that through reflection on “stories of old” that we may better prepare ourselves to make solutions for the future.
The series will include: The Boy from Oz, a regional premiere; West Side Story, a timeless musical; The Prince of Egypt, an upstate NY and rochester premiere – of which OFC is one of the first performing arts centers in the country to be granted permission to present this show; the classic musical Anything Goes; and Gypsy, a golden age musical. Closing out the 2024-2025 season will be the hugely popular Jersey Boys, produced locally for the first time, starring Adam Marino, who has performed professionally across the nation.
OFC Creations has been a fixture of the rochester performing arts scene since 2005. After opening the 260-seat OFC Creations Theatre Center in 2020, OFC has continued to expand with the largest educational theater program for young actors in New York State, opening an immersive theatrical restaurant and cabaret performance venue in 2022. The 2024-2025 season marks the second year of the Broadway in Brighton Series, a professional regional theater season guaranteeing theatrical excellence for audiences.
The inaugural Broadway in Brighton Series brought in many performers from
NYC, LA, and throughout the country, that performed alongside regional performers from the rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse areas. The new season under Johnson’s leadership will hold auditions in New York City in order to bring more new high end talent to our area.
“The success of our inaugural season was a resounding message that the Broadway in Brighton Series has filled a need in our community and beyond,” shared Eric Vaughn Johnson, Executive Director of OFC Theatre. “As a non-equity regional theatre, OFC Creations is proud to bring a professional series that focuses specifically on musicals. By having a mix of classic and golden age, along with rochester premieres and debuts, we are very excited to bring in both new audiences and our beloved followers into the theatre.”
