newsmakers Haley K. Kuhn of Brockport was named to the president’s list at LIM College for the spring 2017 semester. To be placed on the president’s list, students must earn a GPA between 3.8 and 4.0.

Meagan Rose Bell of Rochester, a senior majoring in physics, was named a Presidential Scholar for the spring 2017 semester at Clarkson University.

Presidential Scholars must achieve a minimum 3.80 GPA and carry at least 14 credit hours.

Brittany Merrell of Bergen was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Merrell was initiated at West Virginia University.

Merrell is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

The State University of New York at Fredonia recently announced scholarship recipients for the 2017-18 academic year. Scholarships are made possible by private donors and foundations, most of whom made gifts to the Fredonia College Foundation. Among the new scholarship recipients are the following local students: •Karissa Lubberts of Rochester, a senior majoring in visual arts and new media, has received the David M. and Margaret M. Tiffany Family Scholarship for $850.

•Kelsea Halloran of Rochester, a senior majoring in English, has received the Woods and Earl Memorial Scholarship for $650.

•Stephanie Wojnowski of Rochester, a junior majoring in communication disorders and sciences and French, has received the Jennie Crecraft Olsen Award for $1,000, Children of Alumni Scholarship for $1,000 and the International Education Ann James Manly Scholarship for $2,500.

•Celina Kryk of Spencerport, a sophomore majoring in media management and public relations, has received the AJ Patti Memorial Scholarship for $350, Charlotte Putnam Landers Award for $50, Arthur R. Maytum Scholarship for $1,550 and the John Saultis Friends Fund for $450.

The following local residents were named to the deans list at Wells College for the spring 2017 semester.

•Cash Lawson, of Hilton, class of 2019, is majoring in business and is a member of the men’s lacrosse team. He is a graduate of Hilton High School.

•Zachary D’Arpino, of Rochester, class of 2020, is a member of the men’s basketball team and is a graduate of Greece Arcadia High School.

•Jordan Milliken, of Rochester, class of 2020, is a member of the men’s lacrosse team and is a graduate of Hilton High School.

•Alexander Milliken, of Rochester, class of 2017, majored in biochemistry and molecular biology and was a member of the men’s lacrosse team. He is a graduate of Hilton High School.

•Laura Webb, of Rochester, class of 2017, majored in inclusive childhood education and is a graduate of Odyssey Academy.

The dean’s list consists of students who earn at least a 3.5 GPA for at least 12 hours of coursework in a given semester. About 27 percent of Wells students earned the honor during the spring semester.

Brooke Hare of Hamlin, daughter of Cynthia and Peter Hare of Brockport and granddaughter of Wilson and Joan Buddle of Brockport and Sandra Hare of Hilton, has been named to the dean’s list at The College at Brockport for the spring semester. A 2015 graduate of Brockport High School, Brooke is a junior elementary education student. Along with being a full-time college student, she is also employed full time and serves as an assistant manager at a local store.

in the service Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General, announced the recent reenlistment of members of the State National Guard in recognition of their continuing commitment to serve community, state and nation as part of the Army National Guard.
