Proposed Mavis Tire store needs lead agency for filling SEQR by Kristina Gabalski

Can you help Bill Andrews solve these mysteries?

Brockport history buff Bill Andrews writes: I have acquired Carte de Visite photos of two unidentified Brockport area Civil War soldiers. The one on the left has written on the back, “Brockport, N.Y.” with no notice of the photographer. The one on the right has written on the back “Knapp Family Hamlin” and the photographer is W.H. Fuller Brockport, N.Y. If any readers of the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald can identify the soldiers I will be eternally grateful. Also, I have in press a book that includes the diaries and newspaper articles of Brockport Civil War soldier John Tyler Farnham. His diaries record his writing over 500 letters to family and friends, mostly in the Brockport area. I do not know if any of those letters survive. Anyone who can help me solve either of those mysteries can contact me at wandrews@frontiernet.net or 727-1748. According to Collectors Weekly, “Cartes-De-Visites (CDVs), were part of a major shift in the 1860s from glass and metal photographic media to treated paper mounted on cardstock. Cheaper than daguerreotypes and tintypes, CDVs (which originated in France) made photography accessible to more people and were ideal for giving out at social visits as gifts or calling cards. These 2.5 by 4 inch prints also became the standard medium for photos of soldiers.”

Members of the Spencerport Planning Board have given their approval for Chairman David Wohlers to sign and send out inquiries regarding interested parties which could act as lead agency for the full State Environmental Quality Assessment Review (SEQR) for the proposed Mavis Discount Tire store. The Planning Board met Tuesday, January 6. Kris Schultz of Schultz Associates explained that interested parties will have 30 days to indicate if they would like the lead agency status. “Typically, there is no response,” Schultz said. “In all the projects I’ve done, I’ve never had anybody volunteer.” At the December 2 Planning Board meeting, Schultz told board members that the full SEQR is necessary for the Mavis project because of its proximity to the Erie Canal, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mavis store is proposed for the Tops Plaza in the village.

In addition to the Planning Board, interested parties now include the NYS Canal Corps, the NYS Thruway as well as the Town of Ogden, Army Corps of Engineers, the New York State DEC, the Zoning Board, “... and even BOCES,” Village Engineer David Willard said. Additionally, Planning Board members agreed to move their regular February meeting from the first Tuesday to the second Tuesday, February 10 - in order for the 30-day time frame for responses to be complete. Planning Board attorney Eric Stowe has said the board cannot take action on the Mavis proposal until the SEQR process is complete. If no other agency shows an interest, the Planning Board can act as lead agency. Also during the January 6 regular meeting, Chairman Wohlers announced Planning Board member Denny Marra has resigned and that alternate member Liz Venesky would fill in until a new member is appointed.

Bees take down Kendall Eagles by Warren Kozireski

Inducted into the Hilton CSD 2014 Athletic Hall of Fame are: (l-r) John Feeney, gymnastics coach; Jonathan Schwind, 2008; Rachel Clonick, 2006; Matthew Cushman, 2001; and Matthew Blodgett, 1995. Provided photo.

Hilton inducts five into Hall of Fame Cadets finish second in HOF Tourney by Warren Kozireski Five former athletes or coaches were inducted as the Class of 2014 into the Hilton High School Athletic Hall of Fame: Matthew Blodgett, 1995 (cross country, indoor and outdoor track); Rachel Clonick, 2006 (basketball, softball); Matthew Cushman, 2001 (volleyball, indoor and outdoor track); Jonathan Schwind, 2008 (soccer, hockey, baseball) and John Feeney, gymnastics coach. Blodgett ran for the University of Pennsylvania after graduating from Hilton and earned a letter in 1998. He received his MBA from the University of Rochester and is now an Internal Audit Manager for Paychex. Clonick played varsity softball for five years and was team captain in 2005 and 2006. A four-time all-county first team selection, all-state in 2006 and the 2005 Monroe County Division 1 Player of the Year. She went on to play softball at the University of Hartford where she was named to the America East All-Rookie team in 2007. Cushman was a high-jumper for the Cadets and won the 2001 NYSPHSAA championships at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse after finishing sixth in the state his junior year. He still is the co-holder of the Section V indoor high jump record of 6’10 ¼ set his senior year. Schwind was a four year varsity baseball player for the Cadets and was named to the Class AA All-State First Team his senior year before moving on to play at Marist College. He was a 41st round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He just completed his fourth season of pro ball hitting .289 in 47 games with Bradenton in the Florida State League.

Feeney coached the Cadets to the Monroe County Tournament team gymnastics championship in 1997 and 2004. As the current head coach at the College at Brockport, he won the 2011-2012 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championship. Feeney was awarded the NCGA Coach of the Year for guiding the Golden Eagles to their first ever national championship. In the boys basketball Hall of Fame tournament, the Cadets defeated Greece Olympia 69-43 in the semi-finals behind Mike Ross’ 22 points, Reide Metzger’s 15 and Brent Turpyn’s 10. In the finals, Hilton had an early lead, but Fayetteville-Manlius went on a 16-3 run on their way to an 18-7 first quarter lead. The Cadets fought to within five points of the lead on a pair of baskets and two free throws from Ross along with free throws from Austin Metzger. But the Hornets pressure defense led to some easy baskets. A nine-point halftime lead became as many as 16 in the third quarter. Hilton’s offense woke up in the fourth. They cut the lead to seven on a hook shot by Reide Metzger with 3:30 remaining and to four points on a three-pointer by Johnathan Letta with three minutes left. The lead became just two points on a pair of free throws by Ross with 72 seconds remaining in regulation, but a three-pointer by the Hornets with 35 seconds on the clock sealed the win. Ross finished with 13 points, four steals and four assists and was named to the All-Tournament team along with Reide Metzger, who had 13 points and a teambest eight rebounds in the final. Letta finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Bailey Pittman added six points. The Cadets scored more points from the free throw line - 22 - than they did from the field - 21.

Four wrestlers registered falls and Byron-Bergen earned 30 other points via forfeit as the Bees defeated Kendall 69-12 in wrestling. Phil Walter was leading his 220 lb. match 9-1 before his fall in 2:56 for the Bees. Later in the match Alan White and Danny Khomitch each had first period pins at 138 and 170 lb. respectively while Will Thompson pinned his man in 2:46 at 160 lb. Adam Walter had eight takedowns on his way to a 17-8 major decision at 285 lb. and Hunter Taylor a pair takedowns and

11 other points on near falls in his 15-0 technical fall at 145 lb. The other two decisions for the Bees came from 195 lb. Luke Thompson 9-2 and Dakota White, who used two reverses in his 8-2 win at 132 lb. Chase Toal (182), Justin Hannon (113), Aaron Buckland (120) and Anthony Miraglia (126) all were awarded forfeit wins for Byron-Bergen. Kendall’s Paul Urquhart took just 62 seconds to pin his man at 106 lb. and Jeremy Browe was leading his 152 lb. bout 9-1 before registering a fall in 3:22 for the Eagles’ only points.

Senior guard Joe DeFelice hit a gamewinning three-pointer at the final buzzer as Holley came from as many as eight points down and defeat Webster Christian in the third place game of the Holley boys basketball Holiday Tournament. It marked the second final-shot win of the week for Holley after they earlier defeated Lyndonville on a half-court winner. The Hawks led through all of the lowscoring first quarter on treys by DeFelice and Josh Porter, but the Warriors hit the first field goal of the second quarter as part of an 11-0 run to take over the game. A late second quarter run led by a layup and both ends of a one-and-one by Nick Passarell helped Holley regain some momentum heading into halftime. Zach Vaccarelli scored four of his six points in the early stages of the second half to keep his Hawks within reach of the lead.

In the fourth quarter, Ian Penders hit three free throws and completed an oldfashioned three-point play after getting fouled on his drive to the basket to pull Holley to within four points at 34-30 with 3:37 remaining. DeFelice hit on a lay-up and the ensuing free throw to make it a two-point game with 41 seconds left and, after the Hawks forced a turnover, Vaccarelli made it a onepoint game with his free throw with 39 seconds remaining. Webster Christian helped by missing the front end of two one-and-ones and that opened the door for DeFelice to knock down his game-winner from the left wing to complete the comeback. DeFelice finished with a team-high 12 points and added six rebounds while Vaccarelli led with 11 rebounds. Passarell and Penders each finished with six points while Porter added five rebounds for Holley. Webster Christian’s Matt Wyner led all scorers with 22 points.

Opinion/Comments More housing yields more income for town It seems watching $20 million a year slip through his fingers was not easy for our town supervisor, Paul Kimball. He even made a comment he would have to raise taxes, as if to punish the residents for not getting the Brook Field project like he wanted. I have lived in Clarkson for over 14 years and recall a knock on my door one day after moving in from a member of the town’s committee which dealt with the historical overlay district, which we had moved into. I was informed we could make no changes to our home without going through this committee for approval. Over the years we have watched one housing tract after another be built with homes valued well over $100,000 or more. Tax revenue has grown substantially in Clarkson along with pay raises for town employees. While Mr. Kimball has focused on more houses and more tax hikes on homeowners, we have watched the empty homes in the historical district fall into decay through neglect and vandalism. I believe Beula Frazier would cry if she could see what has happened to her home. Even in her 90s, she kept her home in good repair. Look at it now! Why isn’t the bank made to fix it up and sell it? There would be some tax revenue; not millions though. Another home up Ridge Road near St. Catherine’s Way has been vandalized for sitting empty for so long. I wonder if anyone from the town has visited the banks involved to force them to get these homes repaired and sold? Or is this another part of the Master Plan to wait until the town can take them over, once too far gone, as inroads for a few more housing tracts? Just a thought. I think it is a sad commentary on the future of this town when money becomes more important than what makes

Hilton’s Evening of Jazz features clarinetist Eddie Daniels The Hilton School District Jazz Department and Hilton Music Boosters are presenting the 12th annual Hilton Evening of Jazz on Friday, February 6 at 7 p.m. at Merton Williams Middle School, 200 School Lane, Hilton. This year’s Evening of Jazz features guest artist Eddie Daniels. Daniels, a clarinetist, is equally talented at playing jazz and classical music. He first came to the attention of the jazz audiences as a tenor saxophonist with the Thad JonesMel Lewis Orchestra. When Jones and Lewis organized their band in 1966 to play Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in New York, Daniels was one of the first musicians they called. Later that year, he won first prize for saxophone in the International Competition for Modern Jazz in Vienna, Austria. He continued working with Jones and Lewis over the next several years and toured Europe extensively with them.

A single clarinet solo recorded with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, “Live at the Village Vanguard,” garnered sufficient attention for him to win Downbeat Magazine’s International Critics New Star on Clarinet Award. This conversion to clarinet was not new. Daniels began clarinet at age 13 and received his master’s degree in clarinet from Juilliard. Winning numerous Grammy awards and nominations, Daniels revolutionized the blend of jazz and classical. Tickets are $15 and also include performances by the Hilton Middle School Jazz Ensemble and Hilton High School Jazz Ensemble. Tickets purchased in groups of 10 may reserve a table. To purchase tickets, contact Jared Streiff at 392-1000, ext. 2293 or jstreiff@hilton.k12.ny.us. Provided information

The guiding principle of chiropractic is that a properly functioning body is capable of healing many of its own problems. The spinal cord, which carries signals back and forth between the brain, runs through the spine. Therefore, keeping the individual bones of the spine - the vertebrae - properly aligned is critical to the smooth flow of those signals. Misaligned vertebrae can impact nerves and cause ailments from headaches to back pain and more. A spinal adjustment, one of the hallmarks of chiropractic treatment, is a procedure you should treat yourself to at the start of the New Year. Your chiropractor can also help you come up with a regimen of diet and exercise that will keep you firing on all cylinders. While you’re at it, resolve to make appointments with your dentist, physician and any other health-care giver you should be visiting regularly. Presented as a service to the community by
