St. John the Evangelist Parish celebrates its sesquicentennial by Maggie Fitzgibbon The year was 1851. Reverend Bernard O’Reilly, who was the rector of St. Patrick’s Church in Rochester, paid a visit to the Town of Ogden. During this visit, local resident James McDermott requested that a priest come to the area to serve the needs of the Catholic community. Shortly after, Father Michael Welch celebrated weekly mass in a wagon shop located at Ogden Center. Subsequently, the Town of Ogden purchased a building and renovated it for use as the town hall. Visiting priests said Sunday Mass in this hall until 1857 when a small wooden church was founded just outside of the Village of Spencerport. The community quickly outgrew this small chapel as the area became more populated. Village trustee and parishioner William Kinney donated land and in 1867 the cornerstone was laid for a new church. On October 7 of that same year, the parish was officially established. Fast-forward a century and five decades and St. John the Evangelist Church (St. John’s) in Spencerport is celebrating the sesquicentennial of the founding parish. Many changes have occurred at St. John’s over the last 150 years; 27 priests have served this parish. Some as visiting priests who administered sacraments; some as pastors. The parish has grown immensely; over 1,100 families now consider St. John’s their faith community. A parish school opened in 1927 and after more than 80 years, it closed in 2008. While much has changed, what has remained the same is the dedication of the parishioners. Reverend John Loncle (Father John) has served as the pastor of St. John’s since 2012. He’s quick to point out how warmly he was received upon his arrival in Spencerport. “I was so impressed by the friendliness of people of our parish and their willingness to serve and help others,” Father Loncle said. “I felt welcomed right from
St. John the Evangelist Church. Provided photo. the beginning. I think this is a trademark of our community.” Like in most church communities, parishioners are a support to a pastor. Father John notes how when the idea of a celebration for the 150th anniversary was presented, many people came to a meeting to discuss ideas for a celebration. “We had a meeting where anyone from the parish was invited to come and share their ideas and we brainstormed these ideas of what people would like to do. After a review of all the suggestions, we developed a calendar of activities that began on Easter Sunday,” Father said. “Sub-committees were then formed to organize each event and/or activity.” The activities planned include A Prayer and A Penny where parishioners were encouraged to offer 150 prayers of thanks
across 50 days from Easter until Pentecost and collect 150 pennies to be donated to the House of Mercy. A photo of parishioners taken via drone is scheduled for Sunday, June 11 at 12:45 p.m. on the lawn between the school building and the canal. Celebratory Masses will be held on the anniversary weekend, October 7 and 8, along with a Gala Banquet on October 8. A concert with contemporary Christian musician Chris Wilson will take place on Friday, December 8. A community event is planned for Sunday, June 25 that will include a food truck rodeo featuring five area food vendors, bounce houses, live music and the Wegmans Zoo mobile. The food truck vendors include Abbott’s, Barton’s Parkside Hots, Kettle Korn, Munchies & Sips and Chef ’s Catering. This community picnic is free and will

take place from 12:30 until 5:30 p.m. in a tent located in the parking lot across from St. John’s church. The only cost to attendees is for food from the vendors. Parking will be available in the Spencerport Firemen’s Field, which is adjacent to St. John’s. Cheryl Rozzi has been a member of St. John’s for 21 years. She serves on the 150th Anniversary Celebration Committee and chairs the Food Truck Rodeo and Community Picnic. She explained why the committee opened this event to the public. “St. John’s has always been an integral part of the community of Spencerport and Ogden. By opening the food truck rodeo to the whole community, we are welcoming everyone to experience the friendliness and loving nature of the family of St. John’s, whether they worship here or not,” Rozzi said. “St. John’s is part of Spencerport, and Spencerport is part of St. John’s.” Father John echoes Rozzi’s thoughts and invites the public to attend this parish and community event. “We are inviting the community to the Food Truck Rodeo and Picnic as a way to honor the Town of Ogden’s bicentennial and the Village of Spencerport’s sesquicentennial. This year marks significant dates in our histories. We are extending the celebration and recognizing that the village and town are part of our celebration,” Father said. “We have a mutually supportive relationship with the village, town and surrounding areas. We want to recognize, support and honor those connections.” An anniversary book of parish memories and commemorative ornament are also in the works and will be available in late 2017. St. John the Evangelist Church is located at 55 Martha Street at the corner of Martha and Amity Streets in the Village of Spencerport. Any questions about these events can be directed to St. John’s Parish Office at 352-5481.

Rochester SCUBA Club explores for new members John T. Rogers is well acquainted with water. The Spencerport resident is an avid SCUBA diver and a member of RECDIVERS, a Rochester-based recreational SCUBA club which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Rogers says his fascination with water results from living in Nova Scotia for 17 years before going to university. “When you live in a province that is 95 percent surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, you not only learn how to swim at an early age, but also get an appreciation of the ocean,” he says. That proximity to, and appreciation for the ocean led John to become curious about what lay beneath the waves, and he decided to learn how to dive - SCUBA dive.
RECDIVERS meets the second Wednesday of each month at Bill Gray’s restaurant in Penfield and provides members with scuba diving opportunities and friendship. “You don’t have to be a diver to become a member,” Rogers says. “An interest in diving, the water, and a desire to learn are the prime requirements of membership.” RECDIVERS takes SCUBA diving trips, has taken part in historical underwater searches and artifact preservation, engages in community outreach events and promotion, and offers dive training and safety instruction. Rogers recommends joining a SCUBA club for anyone interested in learning how to dive.

What a little bit of funding and encouragement can do I spent most of today on Main Street in Downtown Brockport planting flowers around trees. It was a very interesting experience. First of all, I got zillions of compliments. Everyone who walked by admired the tree gardens and appreciated the volunteer hours that went into making them lovely. There’s lots of prep to do before planting; mulching and watering to do after. I myself spent a couple of hours last week working on the tree outside State Farm Insurance and most of the afternoon today at Barber’s and Lift Bridge. Pam Ketchum did all the rest. She’s amazing. She had help from a few community service people. How great is that? Someone gets into trouble and their punishment is they have to spend several hours wielding a shovel making their community beautiful. By the way ... no one complained about the waste of their tax dollars when I told them the village was paying for the plants. For the first time in my memory, and I have a long one (Archie started Lift Bridge Book Shop in 1972 and we only recently retired) this year the Village Budget included $500 to purchase flowers for the tree gardens. There are 26 trees. How did we make $500 stretch so far? Kathy at Sara’s was so excited by the prospect of Main Street looking great, that she told us to take what we needed. Her generosity was almost embarrassing. Lowes got into the spirit and donated mulch and enriched soil. Isn’t this a wonderful story? So much better than the years we had to collect enough money from our customers - one dollar at a time - to purchase flowers for hanging baskets, which are also funded by the village now. Most
people were very generous, but one Brockport resident told me that if I wanted to have a store in a place with flowers, I should move Lift Bridge to Fairport. I was shocked and deeply offended. I’m going to tell you that one of the reasons Fairport has a flourishing business district is because the downtown is so attractive. People want to go there to attend events and shop. If anyone complains to me about the waste of their tax dollars on this project, I will attack them with my shovel. I am pretty tired of hearing about how wasteful beautification is. From my business perspective, flowers come under economic development. I encourage you to take a stroll downtown and admire the tree gardens. Support your tax base by buying something in a shop. Treat yourself to an ice cream cone. Head down to the Welcome Center (another controversial project that turned out to be a great idea) on a Thursday evening in July and August for a Summer Serenade Concert. Bring a chair and your dancing slippers. Brockport is a pretty amazing place to live. We are very lucky to have great schools, the canal, a farmer’s market, a college next door to employ us, entertain us, offer our kids a 3/1/3 program, The Morgan Manning House and countless other wonderful advantages. And yes, we have a very expensive police department, too, etc. etc. On balance I think we should be celebrating and I sure hope that’s what will happen after this contentious election is over.

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - June 11, 2017 7
Opinion Blue Collar Brockport misrepresents its opponents Blue Collar Brockport’s advertisement in the May 28 edition of the Suburban News was deceptive and misleading. It misrepresents three minor accomplishments of the current Brockport Mayor and Trustees - a boathouse, murals and a water festival - as their major priorities. In fact, Mayor Blackman and the current village board have compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including the creation of a solar farm at no expense to taxpayers, buy back of streetlights and LED municipal lighting, all of which will save taxpayers more than a million dollars over the next 20 years. They have achieved Clean Energy Community status for the village which has the potential to lower electric bills for village residents. In addition, Mayor Blackman has spearheaded efforts to secure passage of legislation to provide state aid to communities hosting SUNY colleges which would fund the police department and enable lower tax rates and lower village property taxes. Clearly, the village board’s major priority has been to save taxpayers money and lower their energy bills. Other initiatives of the current village board include successfully defeating last year’s effort to dissolve the village, securing a waterfront revitalization planning grant, drafting proposed party and public nuisance laws, and initial efforts toward a comprehensive plan. By ignoring the village board’s actual major accomplishments and misrepresenting some of their lesser ones as their major priorities, the Blue Collar Brockport candidates have raised serious concerns about their own integrity and trustworthiness. Apparently unable to run against the real and impressive achievements of Mayor Blackman and Trustees Crane and Kristansen, their opponents have chosen instead to ignore, distort and misrepresent them.

Frances Tantalo Fonte a fountain of youth by Maggie Fitzgibbon Frances Tantalo Fonte is 105 years old and claims that her fountain of youth has been eating a lot of hot peppers. Her vivid memory attests to a life well lived. The year was 1912. Eggs were 80 cents a dozen, Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state and Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland. Frances was born on February 7 to Rita and Pasquale Tantalo. Her childhood was like many who were born in that era. Her family was not well off but she grew up in a big, Italian extended family that was rich in love and laughter. “We were poor but my father worked hard. We took in boarders to help pay the bills,” Frances explained. “The Salvation Army gave us food, toys and gifts at Christmas time.” Frances easily recalls childhood memories. “We used to go swimming at Brown’s Square. I didn’t have a bathing suit. I wore a dress and pants. My aunt owned a saloon on the corner of Oak and Allen Streets. She had a huge bowl of cherries on the bar. I loved eating those cherries!,” Frances said. Music was important to the Tantalo family. Frances’ father played a reed (an instrument similar to a recorder). “He played the old, Italian music. My brothers, sisters and I would dance,” she said. “When we were young, we would go to weddings and put on a show. I was about 12, my sister was four and we would dance. My one brother played the drums, another walked on his hands. We danced the Charleston and even the Russian Dance. We were the entertainment,” Frances recalled. “People would throw coins and dollars at us and that’s how we made money.” Frances went to work at a young age. She was 15 years old when she became a shoemaker at Quality Heel, a factory in Rochester, where she covered the heels of women’s shoes.
Frances and Vic Fonte. Provided photo.
Frances Fonte. Provided photo. “I quit school, my cousin got me the job. I finished shoes for Eleanor Roosevelt. I covered the heels of her shoes,” Frances said. “Boy, she had a big feet,” Frances added with a laugh. She met her husband Vic and married at the age of 20. The couple had a daughter whom they named Rita for Frances’ mother. She is their only child. After only 13 years of marriage, Frances’ husband passed on May 5, 1945, a day she will never forget. He was serving in the Navy during World War II. After his death, Frances and Rita lived with Frances’ parents and they helped raise her only child. Rita Fonte-Amorese describes her mother as resilient and someone who has a big heart. “My mother has endured many hardships but she has adjusted to whatever adversity has come her way. She was a hard worker. She never said ‘Why me?’ My mother is generous and has an incredible memory,” Rita said. Rita has so many memories of time spent with her mother. Saturdays were saved for mother-daughter special days. Trips to downtown Rochester included shopping, movies, and lunches at the McCurdy’s Tea Room, or Sibley’s. “Lunch at Sibley’s was a hot dog and a malt,” Rita said. “We would go to McCurdy’s to buy goodies at the bakery,” Frances added. Frances has four grandchildren who live in the area and visit her often. Frances lives at Wedgewood Nursing Home in Spencerport. When her oldest grandson visits, he brings Chinese food, one of her favorite dinners. Frances is quick to say, “It has to be good, authentic Chinese food!” Frances’ long life has been measured by love, by sacrifice and by joy. She will gladly tell anyone, “I’ve had a lot fun, laughed a lot and ate a lot of good food.”

Holley welcomes back June Fest by Kristina Gabalski After a one-year break to re-organize, June Fest returned to the Village of Holley on Saturday, June 3. The day-long event featured yard sales throughout the village, a 5K Race at the Holley Central Elementary School, a parade, St. Mary’s Chicken BBQ, Historical Society Bake Sale, Library Book Sale, a Wine Tasting and more. Holley Mayor Brian Sorochty said he felt the day was a success. “We have learned a lot this year,” he said, and thanked volunteers including community residents, village staff, and Holley Central School District staff who gave of their time to plan and oversee the event. “The committee that organized June Fest is the same as the one which organized the Festival of Lights (in December),” Sorochty said. He noted many village staff members volunteered during June Fest to make sure the event ran smoothly. The weather cooperated with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. “It’s been a great day,” Holley Village Trustee and Orleans County Sheriff ’s Deputy James DeFilipps said. “There are a lot of people here.” DeFilipps was working at the informational booth set up by the Orleans County Sheriff ’s Department. Their display focused on summer and water safety and included a Sheriff ’s Department motorboat docked in the canal. This year, food, craft and local business vendors were set up to make a loop along the canal path in the park. Orleans County Historian Matt Ballard attended and gave two talks on Erie Canal history at the gazebo next to the canal. 2017 marks the bicentennial of the beginning of the construction of the Erie Canal and Ballard discussed the impact the canal has had on the Village of Holley. Krista Wiley-Neale, a member of the committee which organized this year’s event, said June Fest is a great way to bring people to Holley to enjoy the village. She agreed with Mayor Sorochty that organizers learned much in the process of planning June Fest’s return. “We welcome new volunteers and ideas,” she said.

Rochester SCUBA Club explores for new members continued from page 2 “There are several advantages,” he explains. “First, you are associating with people who dive. They pass on a knowledge of both the pros and cons of the hobby. Secondly, this hobby is not cheap. Accordingly, members are always buying new equipment and selling used equipment much, much cheaper than you can purchase new
equipment. The club also gives locations of places to dive and what you can expect when you dive there. We schedule several club dives (on weekends) throughout the summer. Lastly, diving is a social sport. Remember, you need a dive partner, the club can provide potential partners.” SCUBA diving has many sub-categories, Rogers notes. There is wreck diving, fish identification, cave diving, environmental reporting and clean-up to name a few. “Personally, I just enjoy the water, and the fact you are immersed in an environment which covers 71 percent of the earth and is much less explored than the moon, is exciting. Plus, I continue to learn something on every dive I take,” Rogers explains. He says diving has many benefits including exercise. The sport also provides a great social environment. “Remember, you dive with a partner and you are responsible to make certain he or she comes back from the dive, and he or she is responsible for you. You get to see different locations not only in the United States, but world-wide.” If you are interested in learning more about SCUBA diving, Rogers says the first step is an introduction to SCUBA course.
One of the RECDIVERS exploring through the waters of Grassy Point State Park. Provided photo.
“This costs about $100,” he says. “For this money, a local dive shop will give you classroom training and then provide you with equipment and take you to a local pool. There you will be underwater in SCUBA gear.” Some people have health-related issues which keep them from diving, Rogers points out. The most common is ear problems which prevent them from equalizing the pressure as they descend. “Others cannot get used to breathing through a regulator,” he explains. “These and several other issues can prevent you from diving.” Such issues can be discovered through the process of taking an introductory course, Rogers says. “If everything is a go after the course, you sign up for an open water SCUBA course,” he says. Completion of the course results in certification and the ability to dive with clubs and dive resorts worldwide. There are numerous learning opportunities for SCUBA divers once they are certified, Rogers says. Those include Diver Level 2, autonomous diver; Diver Level 3, diver leader; and training programs on enriched air nitrox diving. Additionally, there is a long list of specialities which include AWARE - fish identification; deep diver; digital underwater photographer; dry suit diver; equipment specialist; ice diver; night diver; search and recovery diver; underwater naturalist; underwater videographer and wreck diver. Living in Spencerport provides numerous opportunities for diving, Rogers adds. “You can dive the Finger Lakes, the Great Lakes, or drive six hours to the east coast and dive in the Atlantic Ocean.”

A Friendly Place To Live & Shop! Heart-in-Hand Family Massage
Penny J. Bowers, LMT, CR
Greater Brockport Development Corporation announces 2017 Summer Serenades Music Series Summer will soon arrive and with it comes Brockport’s own Summer Serenades community music series, presenting eight weeks of lively concerts by terrific musicians. It’s family friendly, always fun and also free. As in previous years, performances will be held every Thursday evening in July (at 7 p.m.) and August (at 6:30 p.m.) at the Brockport Welcome Center on the Erie Canal, just east of Main Street. The alternate location in case of rain or excessive heat will be The Lodge on the Canal, formerly the Sweden Senior Center, at 133 State Street. Concerts last about an hour and a half. The 2017 lineup includes some returning favorites and some new faces, most of whom have a special connection to Brockport. Some band members grew up here; others teach locally, studied at the College at Brockport, or are current residents. Musical styles range from the country sounds of Julie Dunlap to tunes from The American Songbook
as interpreted by The Geezers, Brockport Big Band, and the Celebration Brass Quintet. Zak’s Pack, John Nygeres Quartet, Brothers from Other Mothers and Chris Wilson round out the series with jazz, rhythm and blues, and folk music. Bring a blanket or chairs unless planning to dance and sing along. Stop at one of Brockport’s local eateries before or after or bring a picnic. Alcohol and tobacco are not permitted at the Serenades. The annual series, produced by the Greater Brockport Development Corporation, is completely funded this year by the generous contributions of community members, local merchants, and civic groups. Tax deductible donations (by check written to GBDC - Summer Serenades) can still be mailed to GBDC, c/o Jacquie Davis, 14 Adams Street, Brockport, NY 14420. Provided information

Frequently ASkeD queStionS About ChiroprACtiC
Q. What conditions do chiropractors treat? A. Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches, particularly with their highly Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. skilled manipulations or chiropractic adjustments. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues as well, since our body structure affects our overall function. DCs also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification. Q. Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children? A. Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle. Presented as a service to the community by

Watercolor paintings on display at the Parma Public Library Award winning artist Lauretta Kirk has brought her new spring show of watercolor paintings to the Parma Public Library where they will remain on display through June. Several of her pieces are “Plein Air” artwork which is accomplished by working on location and taking on the challenge to produce a finished painting before the light changes. Lauretta’s introduction to the art world might be said to go back to her childhood when her father worked as a professional portrait photographer. She also owned and operated the Village
Gallery in Hilton for fifteen years and says of that time, “My favorite aspect of the shop was to get to meet and show the work of so many talented artists.” Lauretta is a member of the Suburban Rochester Art Group and has exhibited widely in area art shows. This show is the sixty-ninth in a series of exhibits hosted by the Parma Public Library which feature area artists. For more information or to inquire about a show, call Rosalind Lipomi, Adult Services Librarian, at the Parma Public Library at 392-8350 or visit www.parmapubliclibrary.org. Provided information
On Saturday, May 27, Hilton FIre Department Boy Scout Troop 99 answered the request for assistance with sandbagging at Ampor Beach. The area has been hit hard by the recent flooding. Provided photo and information.

Community gardens are springing up all over our area and the Holley/Clarendon community recently took advantage of a $15,000 grant obtained by the Orleans County Health Department to start a community garden on a large plot of land off State Street (Route 31) on the east side of the Village of Holley.
