newsmakers Lyssa Fradella of Brockport earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Elmira College. The following local residents received degrees during the commencement exercises at Grove City College on May 20: •Ethan Paszko of Churchville with a bachelor of arts in communication studies and Spanish. •Zachary Pitcher of Spencerport with a bachelor of science in business management and biblical and religious studies. •Devon Powley of Spencerport with a bachelor of science in mathematics and business management. Nicole Turlington of Hamlin has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2017 semester at SUNY Oswego with a 3.4 GPA. Nicole is a sophomore majoring in public justice with minors in forensic science and psychology. She is a 2016 graduate of Brockport High School. Sarah Donovan, from Bergen, was recently presented with the Robert Ewing Senior Prize in History at Lycoming College’s annual Honors Convocation in April. The award is given to the senior with the highest GPA in history. She also completed the additional academic coursework required to graduate as a Lycoming Scholar. Northeastern University is pleased to recognize those students who distinguish themselves academically during the course of the school year. The following local residents were recently named to the university’s dean’s list for the spring semester: •Brennan Balasubramaniam, of Rochester majoring in political science/comm studies. Balasubramaniam is also a member of the University Honors Program. •Sarah Sotack, of Rochester majoring in chemical engineering. Sotack is also a member of the University Honors Program. To achieve the dean’s list distinction, students must carry a full program of at least four courses, have a GPA of 3.5 or greater and carry no single grade lower than a C- during the course of their college career. The University Honors Program offers high caliber students the chance to further hone their studies and interests, live in special interest on-campus housing, and participate in one or two honors courses each term. Invitation into the honors program is highly competitive and students must maintain a high GPA and strong commitment to campus leadership to remain a part. Bucknell University has released the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2016-17 academic year. A student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher to receive dean’s list recognition. •Lauren Paddock of Spencerport. •Kimberly Shust of Rochester.

Randy J. Sharpe, son of Pam and Gary Sharpe of Hilton, was honored cum laude with a bachelor degree in health science at The College of Brockport’s spring commencement after completing an internship at Rochester General Hospital. His field of study is health care management. Sabrina L. Sharpe, daughter of Pam and Gary Sharpe of Hilton, was honored at The College of Brockport’s spring commencement. Sabrina graduated with a bachelor degree in health science. Her field of study is psychology with a minor in the alcohol and substance abuse program. She is employed with Catholic Family Center of Rochester. Leanna Hodge of Spencerport, has been named to the spring 2017 dean’s list at Mansfield University. To be named to the dean’s list, a student must be attending the university full-time and attain at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester. Leanna Hodge of Spencerport, has been named to the Mansfield University president’s list for the spring 2017 semester. To be named to the president’s list, a student must attend the university fulltime and attain a 4.0 GPA for the semester. Jon Price, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Price (Mary) from Kendall, a history major at Grove City College, has been named to the dean’s list with high distinction for the spring 2017 semester. Jon is a 2015 graduate of Kendall Junior Senior High School. To be eligible for the dean’s list with high distinction, students must have a GPA of 3.85 or more. Robin Porter of Spencerport was named to the dean’s list for the Spring 2017 semester at Georgia State University in Atlanta. To be eligible for the dean’s list, degree-seeking students with a minimum Georgia State cumulative GPA of 2.00 must earn a 3.50 GPA for the semester and complete at least nine semester hours of academic credit with no incompletes. Autumn Albrecht of Brockport has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2017 semester at the University of Vermont. Albrecht, is majoring in Elementary Education - K-6 in the College of Education & Social Services. To be named to the dean’s list, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school. Elizabeth Patanella of Churchville, graduated magna cum laude at the 162nd Elmira College Commencement on Sunday, June 4.

German, the Adjutant General of New York, announced the recent service accomplishment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their initial commitment to serve community, state and nation. The newest Citizen Soldiers to complete Army basic combat training and advanced individual training were welcomed to their units during a New York Army National Guard battle handoff ceremony May 21. •Pfc. Chance Ahlberg from Spencerport, was formally welcomed into the Company C, 427th Brigade Support Battalion during a transition ceremony at the Patriot Way Armory in Rochester. The ceremony marks their completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training. The Soldiers will now embark on their traditional National Guard service to state and nation as part-time Citizen Soldiers.
