Chili historic home awarded landmark status Chili has added another home to its historic landmark system. The Archer Homestead at 150 Archer Road came to the attention of the Chili Historic Preservation Board this past year. An investigation by board members resulted in the successful inclusion of this historic place, which is more than 100 years old. The following is a report filed by Rona Pearce, lead investigator for this project: We were greeted by the aroma of zucchini bread still cooling in preparation for our visit. The property has been in the family of Sandra Maloney Foley for three generations. Mrs. Foley’s grandfather, Michael Maloney, purchased the home in 1921. This stately Victorian home sits on a slight rise from Archer Road. Driving into the driveway, we passed a lovely garden, designed and planted in the shape of New York State for her grandmother by her grandfather. Mrs. Foley met us on the back porch and led us into a vestibule with an area that holds the utilities. We entered a central hall with access doors to the kitchen on the left and a powder room on the right. On the south wall of the hallway were 20 to 30 family pictures and a history of 150 Archer. Mrs. Foley and her family moved into the home in 1984. The first impression as we entered the hallway was of the chestnut trim throughout the house, never painted, and lovingly cleaned and treated with wood oil. At the end of the hall were stairs to the second floor. Directly ahead, we entered into the great room created by removing half of the second floor. There was a soaring ceiling, sliding doors to the porch and skylights that wash the floor with light. Near the west wall of the great room sits a very large Franklin stove with the space behind the stove covered in brick and a stove pipe that reaches to the roof top. On the north side of this expanse is a dining room, and around the corner, a formal entrance to the house. A vestibule leads into the formal dining room. Off the dining room on the front of the house is a small sitting room. Some bedrooms on the second floor open to the hallway with a view of the great room below. The rest of the second floor remains with its central hall to bedrooms and a master suite.
And last, but not in any way least, we headed back downstairs to the kitchen. Martha Stewart could walk in and say, “Oh my, Oh my!” The redesign incorporated much from the original kitchen. The first thing you note is a center island - not a usual island, but one which holds her grandma’s baking table with pull out bins that hold baking supplies. The top is also reclaimed wood, surrounded with glass canisters for sugar and flour, recipe books and modern cookers. All the drawers have original pulls. Especially designed for this kitchen are the shaker-style cupboards, color matched to the chestnut woodwork, blending in perfectly to the 1898 era. Below the cupboard is a breakfast bar with stools. Directly opposite on the south side of the long hall is the original chestnut wood cupboard, originally eleven feet long, but shortened to eight feet to adapt to the kitchen wall. It has all original hardware and glass doors. Opposite the island, are her stove and sink with a large window overlooking the deck. On the east side of the rectangular kitchen is another sliding door leading to the deck and numerous cupboards and windows overlooking the yard and barn. Tucked in a corner are a desk and electronic accoutrements, computer and printer files. In the center is a large round table and chairs with a view of the side yard, and a large deck constructed in two levels: the top level holds a hot tub and cooking area, and the lower level has wide stairs leading to the back yard, gardens and tables for dining. Town Historian Peter Widener and board member Earl Basset described the basement with mill-cut timbers and millcut floor joists. The home exterior is constructed with cedar clap-boards. The interior floors are maple and oak. There is a rubble stone foundation and crawl space. The doors are trimmed with chestnut wood. A blight killed off the American chestnut during and after the Civil War; it is unusual to have an original door in this wood. Hinged entrance doors have center-mounted door chimes indicating a home dated between 1865 and 1890s. There are cut glass door windows at the side of the north entrance. Some interior doors are double-hinged used in the early 1900s. Some of the windows are new and are eight over eight, all in Victorian style. Peter and Earl describe the barn as a “phenomenal example” of an early Chili barn, measuring approximately 30’ x 100’ with a gambrel roof and racking supports, most likely built before the main house. It has hand hewn beams, complete milking stanchions and stud stalls for the bull. The second floor is quartered with complete box stalls for two horse team draft horses. There is an herb and flower garden, and fruit trees and vegetables. Around the milk house there is a grove of American Bamboo trees, planted to help keep the milk house cool. There are black walnut and maple trees. The driveway provides plenty of parking for cars and tractors. Seated on the deck, we viewed the entire property. We saw what really makes a farm - barns, the berry patch, vegetable garden and hardworking people, or in this case, a hard-working owner.
Mrs. Foley had one more surprise for us. She appeared with a little black box with golden trim where one keeps their most important papers. Inside the box were all the property abstracts from the time when the abstract was for 3,000 acres and all the other dated abstracts up to 1984 - a complete historic record of the property. Sam Archer bought the farm with 72 acres of fertile soil and open fields. The families who have lived here passed down a bit of folk lore about an original two-room cottage on the property with indoor plumbing. It was called “the rabbit house” where children used to play. Mrs. Foley’s grand and great-grandparent lived in West Chili at Buckbees Corners. Her great grandfather owned the black smith shop, now a part of Genesee Country Museum and called “The Tin Shop.” Their family names were Taylor and Mayer. Sandra’s roots run deep in Chili. Mambo Kings’ Latin Jazz sizzles at Brockport Concert The propulsive rhythms of The Mambo Kings will land them at The College at Brockport for a concert on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. The Mambo Kings will treat the audience to new arrangements of various pop songs including “Just the Two of Us,” and other covers that have appeared on their three CDs, as well as original compositions by Richard DeLaney, the group’s musical director. Since their formation in 1996, the ensemble has gained a national reputation through their recordings, as well as sharing the stage with the symphony orchestras of Rochester, Dallas, Detroit, Baltimore and Vancouver. DeLaney explains that even though they highlight Latin tempos, they incorporate many of the principles that make jazz so distinctive. “The group improvisation is still there. The call and response, the beats, and the harmonics, too. The only difference is that the songs all remain dance tunes,
whether a rhumba, a cha cha, a mambo.” In all the years that DeLaney has been arranging Latin jazz, he admits there’s only been one song he couldn’t resolve musically: “The Beatles’ ‘And I Love Her.’ I tried it real slow and it didn’t work. Then I tried it as a rhumba, and it still didn’t work. They were both sounding too hokey.” In addition to DeLaney on piano, the other Mambo Kings are Wilfredo Colon, percussion; Hector Diaz, bass; John Viavattine, saxophone; and Tony Padilla, conga drums. The concert takes place in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Tickets are $17/General, $12/Seniors, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, and $9/Students. Neil R. Hartwick was the former band director at Batavia High School and Brockport High School, and alumni of SUNY Fredonia. He touched the lives of a countless number of students and families. His gift for inspiring the love of music in others was magical, but his love for his students was the reason he made such a difference in their lives. So many were saddened to hear of his passing in September. Looking for ways to honor the man who had meant so much to them, the alumni and families of Batavia and Brockport have worked together to plan a tribute to Mr. Hartwick, as well as show their love and support for his wife, Nancy Hartwick. Coincidentally, the mascot for all three of these institutions is the Blue Devil, so it seemed only fitting that it be A Blue Devil Tribute. This celebration of Mr. Hartwick’s life will take place in the Brockport High School Auditorium on Sunday, May 27 at 2:30 p.m. with a reception to follow. Mr. Hartwick touched the lives of so many. We invite you to share your

A Memorial Concert to honor Mr. Hartwick will be performed by the Batavia Concert Band on Wednesday, August 1 at 7 p.m. in Centennial Park, Batavia. Maple Festival at Genesee Country Village & Museum Celebrate the long-standing North American tradition of maple sugaring at Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Maple Sugar Festival on March 17 to 18 and March 24 to 25, one of the largest maple sugar festivals in Western New York. Begin the day with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast featuring REAL New York State maple syrup, served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day ($9 adults; $7 youth; free for ages one and under). Between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., the entire museum will be alive with activities. At the nature center, visit the museum’s brand new sugar house and witness the process of transforming sap into syrup. Enjoy self-guided walks along the sugar bush history trail following the evolution of sugar-making from the age of wood, the age of metal with an historic evaporator, to the modern age with its plastic tubing and 21st-century tree taps. Taste sweet samples of sugar-on-snow or indulge in some maple cotton candy ($), manage sap buckets on a shoulder yoke, and warm up in the Meeting Center with storytellers Mohawk Tonia Loran-Galban and Seneca Ronnie Reitter and their Native American tales of maple sugaring’s origin. The Historic Village will be open all day
with open-hearth cooking, candle making demonstrations and 19th-century tastings. The tinsmith and cooper will show how they make wooden sap buckets and tin spiles. Then sit down for a light meal at the historic Hosmer’s Inn Tavern. Included also is a Maple Cooking Contest on Saturday, March 17. Adults and children are invited to submit baked goods and other creations for review. Each entrant will receive free admission to the festival on March 17. General admission to the Maple Sugar Festival is $10. GCV&M members and youth 17 and younger are admitted free. But that’s not all. An adult dance Sugaring-Off Party follows from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 6, with live music by The Brothers Blue, maple-inspired appetizers and desserts, exciting games and plenty of wine, beer and drinks. by T.R. Hendrick The flock of a dozen crows flying the Lake Ontario shoreline suddenly turned inland and made a beeline for our twenty crow decoys strategically placed in the orchard trees. The sound of their cawing could be faintly heard over our digital game caller blaring the sounds of a crow rumble. As the feathered gangsters closed in the lead crow, obviously trying to impress his buddies, kamikazed into our decoy spread, calling loudly as he swooped at our plastic owl decoy. Mike Dwyer jumped from his seat in the haybale blind and rolled the charging bird with one shot from his 12-gauge pump. The trailing gang members flared away, turning back to their migration path along Lake Ontario. Believe it or not, there is a hunting season for crows in New York State. It runs from September 1st through March 31st on Friday-Monday only. Hunting crows is not as easy as it sounds. They are extremely smart and their eyesight is as keen as any bird of prey. To get the lowdown on hunting crows in Western New York, I contacted legendary crow hunting expert Mike Dwyer of Irondequoit. Mike has been hunting crows for over a half century. The man hates crows with a passion. Rumor has it that a crow stole his rattle when he was a baby and he has been seeking revenge ever since. The first words Mike spoke as an infant were, “crows must pay!” Here is what the crow reaper had to say. “The reason I want to shoot every crow I can is because they are terrible nest predators and really do a job on waterfowl and songbird nests, eating their eggs or even young hatchlings. This alone is reason to hunt them in my book. I’m an avid bird watcher and really enjoy feeding songbirds all winter. I figure that for every crow I dispatch I save at least one songbird or waterfowl nest, and probably many more. “Crows are actually a sub-species of vulture. They are omnivorous feeders and their favorite meal is eggs. A crow will sit for hours in a tree above a nest and wait for the hen bird to leave, then swooping in and eating every egg in the nest. “There are three main ways to hunt these egg suckers. First is the run-and-gun method where you use an electronic game caller in an area that you know crows are using. Let the caller do the work for you here, decoys are not needed when hunting in this fashion. Full camo is, however, including facemask and gloves. Be ready to shoot shortly after you turn the caller on when using this tactic, crows have great hearing and any birds in the area will be on you in a few minutes. You’d better make the most of it because the first few that arrive will probably be the only birds you will get a shot at. They wise up quickly and the ones you don’t kill will land in distant trees and warn any new birds of the danger. After the first flurry, you will be smarter to move down the road a mile or so and set up again. Decoys are not mandatory in this type of hunting as long as you get tucked into an area where the incoming birds cannot make out what is going on until it’s too late. “The second method is to locate a crow roost area and hunt the crows’ flyway as they leave their roost in the morning or as they return in the afternoon. Decoys are important with this method and full camo as usual. Crows’ worst enemy is an owl and they will brawl with every one they find; an owl decoy can be deadly when hunting roost-

Most roosting crows fly out in the morning on the same route every day, so you can pattern and hunt them along the route. Be sure not to set up closer than a half mile from the actual roost and you can continue to hunt the same crows for weeks. “The third method, and my favorite, is hunting migrating crows. Believe it or not, crows do migrate. Even the crows that roost in the City of Rochester all winter migrate to Canada in mid-February. Crows and raptors will not fly over large expanses of water, so when they hit the shores of Lake Ontario they follow the shoreline until they eventually skirt the entire lake and finish their trip north. This can make for some fantastic crow hunting as the birds work their way along the shoreline of the lake in a steady flow. You need a good stiff breeze from the south to have a good crow migration and, hence, good hunting because it pushes the birds to the shoreline of the lake. With the D.E.C. only allowing Friday-Monday hunting you may not get that south wind on those four days for the entire month, and the season ends with no good hunting wind whatsoever. “I would love to see them open the crow season every day in the month of March. The state wouldn’t need to add more days overall, just start the season on October 1st rather than September 1st. Nobody hunts crows in the fall any way. January through March is when people hunt these predators.” I would like to thank Mike Dwyer for his crow expertise. The man would rather shoot a dozen crows than a ten-point buck. Crow hunting specialists are a dying breed. Be assured there will be none in this next generation, so it is important to learn all we can from a guy like Mike. The D.E.C. would do well to contact the man for his advice on setting the crow season. If you are looking for some fun in March when almost every other hunting season is closed, try some crow hunting. Besides the fact that it is a great way to hone your wingshooting skills, it is a tremendous way to teach young hunters the ropes, and the bonus is that you will save many nesting bird eggs in the process.

Registration open for Westside Challenger Tennis program At their annual conference, the United States Tennis Association recognized Westside Challenger Tennis as the most outstanding program in the category, ‘Service to People with Disabilities’. Once again, Westside Challenger Tennis will provide a Spring Program for K-12 students with special needs. Although this program is designed to ensure that students with special needs receive excellent instruction from specially trained professionals, tailored to their individual skill level, the program is integrated and all players are welcome. This program is based on the United States Tennis Association motto that “people of all ages and abilities should have an opportunity to participate in the game of tennis.”
The spring session dates are April 14, 21, and 28 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., and will take place at the Brockport Central School District tennis courts or gym facilities. Participants should plan on attending all dates. Students with special needs will be given enrollment priority. Equipment and refreshments will be provided at no cost. This program has a limited enrollment of twenty (20) participants accepted on a first come first served basis. Sweden assessment notices mailed to every property owner Every property owner in the Town of Sweden will receive an assessment notice in the mail this week. Assessor Tammy Baker is in the midst of a major update of the roll. While some property values will remain the same, and a few will decrease in value, most assessed valuations will rise. Property owners who are satisfied with their assessment do not need to do anything.
If a property owner has questions or disagrees with the tentative assessment, they should call the assessor’s office at 637-8683 for an appointment. Ms. Baker is scheduling informal reviews in 15-minute increments as there are more than 4,400 parcels in the town. Please note that the assessor is an independent official and all inquiries have to be addressed to her. Elected officials are not permitted
Brockport meets with the Canal Corporation On the evening of March 6, the Village of Brockport hosted a public information meeting with the NYS Canal Corporation at the A.D. Oliver Middle School Auditorium to discuss their clear-cutting along the canal embankment in Brockport and, moving forward, to focus on the remediation plan for it. The well-attended event included elected officials from the Village of Brockport and Town of Sweden, the Villages of Spencerport, Holley, and Albion, and the Town of Murray, along with representatives from the legislative offices of Senator Ortt and Assemblyman Hawley. “In Brockport, we have a large number of homes that are directly below the canal embankment - some 70 properties. Any failure of that embankment would endanger not only village residents, but those residing beyond them. This was a necessary public safety action,” Mayor Margay Blackman stated.
The village will work with the Canal Corporation until the project is finished, and has requested that: 1) the arborist they hire be available to consult with Brockport homeowners about appropriate plantings on property lines to provide privacy; 2) the Canal Corp assume the cost of those plantings; 3) when the time comes to discuss options for low growing vegetation on the cleared embankment, the Canal Corp engage a local nursery to advise on embankment plantings; and, 4) the Canal Corp work with the village to identify and develop several public access points to the canal path. Members of the audience had an opportunity to ask questions and to meet with Canal Corp personnel on a oneto-one basis following the meeting. The village anticipates this as the first of several more meetings as the project progresses. A complete video of the meeting will be posted on the village’s website next week. Provided information
to conduct assessment reviews. If a property owner is not satisfied at the outcome of the informal meeting, they have a right to appeal to the Sweden Board of Assessment Review. The Review Board meets on May 22. Appointments for appeals will become available on May 1, at the conclusion of all informal reviews.

Sigillo Chiropractic Alternative Therapies for Chronic Back Pain Despite the clear risks, doctors have continued to prescribe painkillers, and perform surgeries and injections, sometimes to patients who won’t take no for an answer or who can’t afford to try alternatives. Slowly though the tide is shifting. Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. Medical societies and public health agencies are now advising doctors to try less invasive options before considering opioids or surgery. Most recently, in February 2017, the American College of Physicians advised doctors and patients to try “non-drug therapies” such as exercise, acupuncture, tai chi, yoga and chiropractic, and avoid prescription drugs or surgical options wherever possible, In March 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also came out with new guidelines urging health care providers to turn to non-drug options and non-opioid painkillers before considering opioids. At the same time, research has mounted suggesting alternative therapies (acupuncture, massage, spinal manipulation) can be effective. Spinal manipulation is a specialty of chiropractors who are trained in alleviating lower back pain. They can offer a range of non-drug therapies for back pain and recommend exercises and important lifestyle changes to help prevent future back pain and injury. DANCE/Strasser features graduate and undergraduate choreography The College at Brockport’s Department of Dance will present DANCE/Strasser featuring choreography by undergraduate and graduate students in the college’s nationally renowned dance program. According to artistic director and dance faculty member Stevie Oakes, “This exciting collection of 12 adjudicated dance works represents a series of bold, ferocious and nuanced movement choices from each of the student choreographers.” Exploring choreography that befits a three-sided studio-theater, this concert “oscillates between expansive explorations and intimate interweaving of space. The play between strong individual movers and community cohesion develops as a theme, uniting the scope of the works. Dancers seek connection and display virtuosity in movement and in style, while a wide array of soundscapes accompany this diverse collection of dances: enjoy the familiar voice of Billie Holliday alongside the sweeping strings of a Bach violin partita or the driving rhythms of our dancers moving together with gusto.”
The concert proudly demonstrates the range and talent of Brockport’s Department of Dance at both the graduate and undergraduate level, with many of the choreographers and performers appearing in their final semester of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program before they graduate and continue to inspire community and connection beyond college. Any remaining tickets will be available at the Box Office in Hartwell Hall one hour prior to each performance. Performances take place Thursday through Saturday, March 22 through 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rose L. Strasser Studio in Hartwell Hall, Kenyon Street, on the Brockport campus. On Sunday, March 18, a benefit concert will be held at the Brockport First Baptist Church, 124 Main Street, to benefit the ongoing hurricane relief efforts for the island of Puerto Rico. Devastated by Hurricane Maria, there are still over 400,000 utility customers without power as of February this year. The concert, beginning at 3:30 p.m., combines the talents of the Sweden Senior Singers, Spencerport Community Chorus and the local acoustic guitar group Lake Effect. A wide array of vocal music from Broadway to classic rock can be enjoyed. Audience participation will ensure a good time for all.
This will be the 12th benefit concert that the Brockport First Baptist Church has hosted over the past 13 years, starting with relief for Hurricane Katrina. Other concerts have benefited earthquake relief for Haiti, local food shelves and the local hospice facility, the Aurora House. There is no admission charge for the concert, but a free-will donation following the concert will be greatly appreciated. The church will be providing a baked food sale to benefit the effort as well. The church building is accessible for everyone. Combining talents and financial support, we can indeed climb every mountain.

On March 1, Clarkson Democrats hosted a Wine Tasting at A Gust of Sun Winery. Democratic candidates running for the 27th Congressional District, Nate McMurray and Nick Stankevich, were guest speakers. The seat is currently held by Representative Chris Collins. Monroe County Sherriff, Todd Baxter, was also in attendance and addressed the opioid epidemic. He shared what his department is doing to combat this critical problem. The event was well attended with good entertainment, good wine and good company. Amadeus Chorale and Brockport Symphony Orchestra present concert Under the direction of Darla Bair and Jonathan Allentoff, The Amadeus Chorale and Brockport Symphony Orchestra will join forces to present “Global Connections,” a gala concert that will highlight a wide variety of masterpieces, dances and folk songs from around the globe. Rachel Roessel, the orchestra’s principal clarinet and an active musician in the Greater Rochester area, will be featured as soloist in Allentoff ’s new setting of Antonin Dvorak’s hymn, “Goin’ Home.” The program, which includes works by Elizabeth Alexander, Edward Elgar, Reinhold Gliere, Jim Papolulis, Giacomo Puccini and Donna Gartman Schultz, also showcases the talents of internationally-acclaimed concertmaster Jaesun Han and collaborative pianist Sally Martin. Both ensembles recently returned from performing highly-acclaimed concert tours. The Amadeus Chorale was invited to perform on-stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in December, where they opened for The Rockettes. The Chorale also toured Philadelphia last summer and appeared in a special television broadcast. This past fall, the Brockport Symphony Orchestra presented two command performances in celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial at the Rochester Museum & Science Center’s Eisenhart Auditorium, and Empire State Plaza’s Clark Auditorium at the New York State Museum in Albany. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, a member-supported organization. The gala will take place on Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m. in the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, 1200 South Winton Road in Rochester. Concert tickets are $10 each and can be purchased online at brockportsymphony. org and at the door. Hats off to Village Municipal Workers Once again, Village Municipal Electric workers (MEUA) have stepped up and activated their mutual aid plan. After securing their own franchises, crews from Fairport, Churchville, Bergen, Spencerport and Holley were assigned to help restore circuits and service to customers in the Southern Tier and Hornell area of New York this past Friday and Saturday. My hat is off to these guys and girls all over again and shows the worthiness of New York State Village governments and their municipal workers, Electric, DPW and Office Staff. Spencerport’s DPW, like our other neighboring villages DPW’s, had the storm under control for our residents the next afternoon following the overnight huge snowfall. Our office staff was there and our office was open the morning following the storm, business as usual.
