Aurora House celebrates fifth anniversary Comfort care home for the dying exists on donations, fundraisers and volunteers by Grace Griffee It’s hard to believe that such a comfortable, well-maintained home, staffed 24 hours a day, can exist solely on donations, memorials, grants, fundraisers and volunteer hours, but that is exactly what Aurora House in Spencerport has been doing for the past five years. After volunteering at another comfort home in the area, founder Sandie Ville had a vision for a similar facility on the west side of Monroe County. Through a donation of land by the Ogden Presbyterian Church and community support, ground was broken for the project in September 2009 and one year later, the doors were opened to its first residents. Aurora House served 22 families during its first year of operation and over 120 in the past five years. “Sandie’s mission was to make a house that would fit into the community, not a facility,” said Karen Kuebler, executive director and the home’s only full time staff member. “Aurora House wouldn’t exist without a tremendous amount of help from the community and volunteers.”

“We have an amazing, talented and dedicated group of individuals who are truly invested in our mission and work hard to support what happens inside and outside Aurora House each and every day.”

Karen Kuebler Aurora House Executive Director

Aurora House does not receive any funding from insurance, hospice agencies or the government. Because the home only has two beds, it is not considered a nursing home. A person comes into the care of Aurora House through a referral made by a hospice agency. Referrals are made when a person is thought to be in the final three months of his/her life. Although 24 hour a day, 7 day a week care is provided, families are not charged for the services their loved one receives. “Five years of resident care involves a great number of hands at work,” said Kuebler. “No experience is necessary for any volunteer position. We provide the training

Ground was broken for Aurora House at 2495 South Union Street in Spencerport in September 2009 and one year later, the doors were opened to its first residents. Aurora House served 22 families during its first year of operation and over 120 in the past five years.

and welcome families, young adults and seniors to help.” Aurora House has 56 volunteer shifts each week – two volunteers at a time in four-hour shifts. Some of the jobs include providing resident care, gardening, grocery shopping, housekeeping, special events, fundraising and house maintenance. “We have an amazing, talented and dedicated group of individuals who are truly invested in our mission and work hard to support what happens inside and outside Aurora House each and every day,” said Kuebler. Instead of having an event to celebrate the fifth anniversary, Aurora House staff and volunteers are focusing their efforts on the annual Bountiful Baskets & Brunch event that will be held Saturday, October 17 from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Pearce Memorial Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili. Patrons purchase tickets to the event for $20 per person and the 400-ticket event always sells out. The fundraiser features 150 themed gift baskets valued at $50 or more that are donated by individuals, businesses,

clubs, church groups and families. Carol Kirkpatrick, who volunteers throughout the year with her husband, Roger, lends her artistic expertise to the fundraiser by putting items in the perfect container, wrapping them and tying them up with a bow. Patrons put raffle tickets in bags next to the baskets they would like and a ticket is drawn to determine the winner. For more information, visit http://www.aurorahousewmc. com/2015/08/bountiful-baskets-and-brunch/. Aurora House also held a “Starry Night” fundraiser in April that featured a buffet dinner, music and silent auction, and an Old Fashioned Pig Roast in September. Look for details later in the year on the Light of Remembrance event, which last year featured 550 luminaries lighting the grounds in remembrance of loved ones who have passed. “Individuals are going to take this journey with or without us,” said Kuebler. “If we can make the time more enjoyable and comfortable, then we have given them our greatest gift.”

Beyond Trick-or-Treating: Fun family activities for Halloween season (StatePoint) Trick-or-treating may be the standard Halloween tradition for most American families, but the holiday has branched out extensively over the last decade. Today, Americans spend over one billion dollars visiting Halloween-themed attractions. Where are they going, and what are the best activities for your family? The experts at Hauntworld.com are offering some spooky answers in this ultimate fall to-do list. Farm Fun Many farms offer tons of fall activities ideal for families with young children, including picking the perfect carving pumpkin, finding your way out of a corn maze and drinking homemade apple cider. Other fun activities include pony rides, hay mazes, non-spooky hayrides, petting zoos and even shooting pumpkin cannons. Ghost Tours Ghost hunting television shows have really increased the popularity in finding haunts and eerie tours. Learn more about your local area’s spooky history by taking family or out of town guests to haunted mansions, cemeteries, prisons and more. Zombie Runs What could be scarier than a 5K run? One with zombies of course! Zombie runs are a good time for the whole family, providing a fun reason to get kids and teens moving, using obstacle courses, contests, prizes and more as incentives.

Haunted Hayrides Hayrides can be as sophisticated as a Hollywood movie, complete with fog machines and lights. Some have even adopted new twists. For example, on a zombie paintball hayride, guests go on a high adrenaline adventure, hunting and shooting zombies with paintballs. Haunted hayrides make guests and especially smaller children feel safe as they ride in groups. Home Haunts Americans are now decorating their yards and homes into spooky graveyards with high tech lights, animations and more. Some homeowners take it further by also decorating their home’s interiors and creating mazes in the garage or backyard. Finding a spooky home haunt or neighborhood near you can be a great Halloween activity to do if you’re on a budget. Haunted Houses Haunted houses come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from three-dimensional black light attractions to haunted trails to major scream parks. Haunted houses also change regularly, so it may be very different from visit to visit. Today, most haunted attractions don’t rely as much on blood and guts as they do on interactive special effects, sophisticated costumes, story lines and computer-generated imagery. To celebrate the scary side of Halloween, get the family together for an unforgettable night filled with fun and screams.

Re-elect Sweden Supervisor Rob Carges Please vote November 3, 2015 Dear Sweden Residents, It has been a privilege to serve on the Sweden Town Board for 22 years, the past two as your supervisor. I am most proud of the fiscal work we have done: • keeping town taxes low • keeping our debt low • keeping our bond rating high • keeping our reserves strong I am also very proud of the community we have become. Twenty-two years ago there was no community center, no town park, our water rates were higher than they are now, far fewer homes had public water or public sewer and we had not brought the town into the digital age — virtually everything is accessible electronically now. Thank you for your past support and please come out and support my team again as we continue to provide you excellent services at the lowest possible cost.

9th AnnuAl CAndy Buy BACk Presented by

Steven J. Thompson, D.D.S. For the past 8 years we’ve marked Halloween by helping kids cut back a little on their Halloween candy consumption while also offering them a way to help support our troops overseas. We’ve invited kids of all ages to come to our office the week after to drop off their excess Halloween candy. We’ve also offered to “Buy Back” any unwanted Halloween candy for $1 per pound. All candy collected (along with toothbrushes and toothpaste) has been forwarded to Operation Gratitude where it is included in special care packages and sent to individual servicemen and women overseas. By Christmas this year, Operation Gratitude will have sent over one million packages and we’re proud to have been a part of that effort. Over the years we’ve had a

great time playing it up for Halloween and collected hundreds of pounds of candy. One year, R News even came to video the party and aired a nice piece about our event. We’ve decided to extend the Buy Back this year and allow folks to drop off candy any time the week following Halloween. We’ll be open 8am – 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday, November 2, 3, 4 & 5, so you will have more time after school to stop by. And, of course, adults with left over Halloween candy, or a desire to help with postage costs are always welcome to donate as well. We’ll be posting more information in the next few weeks. Thanks for your support. We are located at 42 Public Square, Holley and can be reached at 638-5435.

Drive-thru window approved for proposed Spencerport Dunkin Donuts for the drive-thru window as zoning for the parcel only allows its use for a restaurant providing there is no drive-thru ordering or pickup. Romeo’s attorney, Daniel Aureli, told Zoning Board members the town had previously granted a special use permit ten years ago for a drive-thru for a coffee shop proposed for the location, but that project never came to fruition. Zoning Board Chair Duane Fregoe expressed some concerns over the volume of traffic at the drive-thru, noting that at some restaurants, “... the drive-thru (traffic)

by Kristina Gabalski Members of the Ogden Zoning Board approved a special use permit and an area variance during their regular meeting Thursday, October 1, for the new Dunkin Donuts franchise proposed in Spencerport. Frank Romeo of Ogden Land Company wants to open the franchise in the former CAM’s Pizza location on the southwest corner of the Route 31/Route 259 intersection. The project needed a special use permit

spills out onto the street.” Aureli responded that drivers have a personal responsibility to be careful, “At some point, you’ve got to look where you are going,” he said and noted that the Dunkin Donuts location at the intersection of Buffalo Road and Howard Road in Gates is “more constrained” than the Spencerport location will be. Additionally, Zoning Board members granted an area variance for the project regarding parking, “for 29 spaces, whereas the schedule of off-street parking requires 53 parking spaces.”

Aureli told board members the Dunkin Donuts is, “not a destination, sixty percent of the business is drive-thru.” Zoning Board Chair Fregoe said he “was good” with the variance request. “It’s a similar use to CAM’s, most people will be using the drive-thru,” he said. “The actual use is not substantial.” No residents spoke during the public hearing on both the special use permit and the variance. The Ogden Planning Board has already given preliminary and final approval to the project.

New Victorian Gateway made possible for Brockport The Village of Brockport (Walk Bike Brockport and the Mayor’s Office) is wrapping up its Master Plan for Pedestrian and Biking Traffic in the greater Brockport area. This plan, once implemented, will lead to increased business for Brockport merchants - as demonstrated by research on the effects of plans like this. In addition, it will create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone who lives in or drives through the historic Erie Canal Village of Brockport. As a follow-up to this plan’s completion, the village has launched a new project to transform the Main Street Railroad Bridge into a Victorian Gateway to downtown historic Brockport. The plan, made possible by a $50,000 grant from the Genessee Transportation Council, requires additional financing. The village will apply for two grants to supplement needed funds, as well as accept donations through GoFundMe or by mail. Go to the GoFundMe website or write a check. Please send checks to Walk Bike Brockport, Brockport Village Hall, 49 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420. Provided information

As with many forms of health care, people will sometimes ask: If I’m feeling good, why do I need it? In terms of chiropractic treatment, one answer could be, Are you feeling the best you could be? Are you reaching maximum capacity?

The spine, along with the nerves that run through it and emanate from it, is the central communication route between the brain and the rest of the body. Even a slight misalignment in the individual bones that make up the spine - they’re called the vertebrae - can affect the quality of the signal that passes through them. The obstruction could be so minimal that you don’t even notice it - until it’s fixed - or could be such that it causes pain and impairs the function of a particular body part. These misalignment, in chiropractic parlance, are call subluxations. Chiropractors are trained in, among other things, the art and science of keeping the vertebrae in proper alignment. Manually adjusting the spine is the hallmark of the chiropractor, though there are other techniques available. And if you’re not feeling well, if you suffer, for example, from lower back pain, chiropractic treatment can be very effective in easing your pain. Professional athletes routinely use chiropractic treatment as a way to enhance performance. Enhance your lifestyle in general and visit a chiropractor. Presented as a service to the community by

Cadets win first of season by Warren Kozireski Hilton won an extended first game before also taking the second and third in a 34-32, 25-22, 25-23 sweep of Churchville-Chili in boys volleyball for their first win of the season. Both teams allowed four point lead to evaporate in game one before the game settled into a point-for-point affair. The teams traded points starting at 22-22 with multiple opportunities to win dissolved by a net serve or mishit all the way to 32-32. Hilton took scored consecutive points on two Saints errors to eke out the 34-32 victory. The Cadets generated just four points

from the offense in game two, including a pair of kills by Bryce Thompson. They built an 11-point lead before the Saints rallied with Jared Moore registering consecutive kills before falling short. In the third game, C-C built a four point lead at 15-11 before the Cadets rallied on kill by Carl Pilon and an ace from Aaron Gibbs. Nick Rugelis had a kill to tie the contest at 22-all, but Hilton finished off the sweep with consecutive points on errors. Dylan Angora led the Saints with six kills. The Cadets were paced by Pilon’s eight kills, Thompson’s 15 assists, Joe Cavallaro’s five kills and defensively by Gibbs, who finished with 25 digs and added five aces.

Spencerport native Mills inducted into Golden Eagle Hall by Warren Kozireski Spencerport High School graduate Brandon Mills was among nine inductees as part of the 31st class into the College at Brockport Golden Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame in ceremonies held October 3. Mills played with the men’s basketball team from 2000-2004 and helped them to three NCAA tournament bids which included a run to the “Elite 8” in his sophomore year and two “Sweet 16’s”. “It’s a great feeling and especially great being inducted in the same class with my teammate, Mike Medbury,” Mills said after the ceremony. “We couldn’t bring a

national title here, but we had some really good teams and brought some pride to the school.” The power forward was a three-time AllSUNYAC selection - First Team as a senior - and was part of the school record 28-win season in 2001-02. Mills finished his collegiate career ranked fifth all-time at the school in scoring and still holds the record for most games played (119) and career free throw attempts (569) while ranked among the top-ten in several other career categories. He now works for the National School Boards Association as a technical system administrator based in Virginia.

Spencerport schools receive NYSSBA Be the Change Award The New York State School Boards Association selected Spencerport Central School District as one of only three districts statewide with the 2015 Be the Change for Kids Innovation Award. The award, announced during a press conference on September 29, recognizes Spencerport for its 21st Century Technology Team initiative. The 21st Century Technology Team provides staff development for teachers, as well as direct instruction to students utilizing a blended learning model. Reaching all students in grades K-5, this collaborative effort has provided consistent and equitable experiences utilizing 21st Century technology in all elementary classrooms within the school district. Representing Spencerport at the ceremony at SUNY Poly included teachers and administrators: Elissa Kingsbury, Telcie Pincelli, Cory Allen, Lisa McCarthy, and Ty Zinkiewich; along with Board President

William Sweeney. The Be the Change for Kids initiative launched in January of 2010 to set awareness of the funding crisis facing New York’s public education system, and to encourage school leaders to consider ways to optimize resources and embrace new methods of teaching and learning. Fundamental changes in financing education, spending priorities, incentives and performance measures were needed to ensure all New York’s public education students have equal opportunity for success. Three guiding principles steer the Be the Change for Kids initiative: •Provide a globally-competitive education at an affordable cost •Improve efficiencies without sacrificing quality •Embrace change when it leads to better opportunities and success for students. politically speaking

Guidelines for candidate’s letter submitted to this newspaper For the 2015 fall election, Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald will accept one letter from a candidate for office according to the following guidelines: •Limited to a maximum of 250 words in length. •Submitted on or before 4 p.m. October 19. •Focused on campaign issues, experience and goals. Westside News Inc., publisher of Suburban News & Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, expects to print the submitted letters in two issues on a space-available basis -- October 25 issue and November 1 issue. The placement of such letters in the publications will be random and under a “politically speaking header.” No options are offered for selecting the issue date.

Further, submitted letters can be edited for fair play, clarity, ease of reading, and if needed, length. In print, the letter will carry a headline which states the candidate’s name and the office being sought. A text signature and the town of residence will be printed at the end of the letter. The newspaper staff reserves the right to refuse any submitted letter which is not in keeping with the intent and purpose of providing this space -- that being to inform the voters. Keith A. Opinion/Comments Missing porch decoration has great sentimental value Saturday, October 3, I noticed that a ceramic statue of a cocker spaniel was missing from my porch where it had stood sentinel for two and a-half years. The thief that stole my dog came right up on the porch and took it without permission and it was not his or her property to take. The definition of thief is “one who steals.” That ceramic cocker spaniel does not have any monetary value at all, but it has a million or more in sentimental value. That dog was a gift from my best friend who left this earth December 1978 in an auto accident. She had made this dog in a ceramic class she was taking and she never got to finish it. That dog was supposed to be my Christmas present from her. My friend’s sisters finished painting and

lacquering the dog and gave it to me from her. You, as the cowardly thief, would not know this, nor would you even care because your only interest lies in what you can steal from others and get away without being held accountable for your negative actions. I do hope my cocker spaniel ceramic statue brings you nothing but bad luck for the rest of your days on earth. Or, you can return the dog to its proper spot on the front porch where you had taken it from and there will be no questions asked. Your choice. L. Lemcke Brockport

Price for services seems like good deal In the September 27 issue of Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, Ketchum wrote: “Village taxes are separate from Town taxes. Town taxes do not pay for any Village services.” Ms. Ketchum paid $195 in Sweden Town Taxes in 2015. That’s right, $195. This is what she got for that $195: a senior center; a community center; a 156-acre park; the care of five historic cemeteries; dog control including free rabies shots; clerk services that can’t be had at the village office – hunt-

ing and fishing licenses, marriage licenses, handicapped parking passes; municipal parking lots in the heart of the dense village; a court system mandated by the state; and school tax collection. Sounds like a pretty good deal for $195.
