Peace, one child at a time by Maggie Fitzgibbon Peace, one child at a time. This is the motto of the Irish Children’s Program of Rochester (ICP of Rochester). For the last 34 years this organization has worked to help deliver this guiding principal both here in the United States and in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The premise of how the program operates is simple. Northern Irish children spend a summer living with Rochesterarea families learning American traditions, customs and ways. The hope is that the Northern Irish children learn how people of all faiths and religions live together peacefully regardless of their religious beliefs. The history of the conflict in Ireland It’s a centuries old conflict that can be traced back to the 17th century when the English came to rule Ireland. With each following century came more conflict and political dissention. In May 1921, the Government of Ireland Act passed, which split Ireland into two countries. The Republic of Ireland became a free state; Northern Ireland remained a province of England. It’s important to note that two religions exist in Northern Ireland, the predominate religion being Protestant with Roman Catholic being the minority. The opposite holds true for the Republic of Ireland where the majority of citizens practice the Roman Catholic religion. In the 1960s, social, economic and political unrest reined over Northern Ireland and trouble erupted. Two paramilitary armies were formed with the purpose to defend each religious community. The Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) defended the Protestant community; the Irish Republican Army (IRA) protected the Catholic community. In January 1972, a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland erupted into bloodshed and became known as ‘Bloody Sunday.’ In an effort to calm this turbulence, British troops were deployed. This effort failed and the segregation of Catholics and Protestants grew even wider as peace walls, a series of border barriers, separated Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods. This unrest continued for decades until a paramilitary cease fire agreement in 1994 and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which delivered a locally elected government. It’s important to note that this is a snapshot of years of turbulence and violence. Many lives were lost in this

civil war including victims of bombs, gunfire and hunger strikes. The Irish Children’s Program was born out of a hope to remove children from Belfast for a month during the summer, and bring the Northern Irish children to America to learn religious tolerance and acceptance. How the program works There are two boards of directors, one in Rochester and the other Belfast, Northern Ireland. Each board works to promote the ICP of Rochester in each of their respective communities. Interested families in Northern Ireland meet with the Belfast board of directors to learn more about the program. The same happens here in Rochester. Families in Rochester are screened and matched with a child from Northern Ireland who would be best suited to stay with the American family. The Northern Irish children are matched with American families of opposite faiths. The American families agree to host a child or children for a month from early July to early August. Members of the Northern Irish board travel with the children to America and also stay with host families. During the time in America these board members visit the Northern Irish children at their host families’ homes to ensure that the children are adjusting to life in America. A summer learning about America and Ireland Brockport resident Martie Lemcke learned about the Irish Children’s Program when she read a notice in the Suburban News. She attended an information meeting last winter and together with her daughter Lynny Lemcke, they decided to apply. Lemcke’s daughter and two grandsons, Chance and Mason Reynolds, live with her and she knew that they all would enjoy this experience. Martie was delighted to learn she was approved and anxiously awaited the arrival of two Irish boys, Morgan and Robert. “I’ve always been involved with different children’s programs like my church’s summer program and Girl Scouts. We also hosted a Japanese foreign exchange student. I believe that a house full of love has elastic walls,” Martie said. The two Northern Irish boys arrived in Rochester in early July and over the next four weeks they spent the days exploring all that Rochester has to offer. They’ve been to Niagara Falls and rode the Maid of the Mist, visited Letchworth State Park, the Lockport Caves, Seneca Park Zoo, and New-

ark Transportation Museum. They been to countless movies and played many games of Putt Putt golf. Some of their favorite activities were going out to get pizza and ice cream and riding in Linny Lemcke’s 1931 Model A Ford aka the jittney. Despite some minor adjustments, the four boys got along beautifully, just as Lynny and Martie hoped they would. Robert noted that there are different words for different things here in America. “We had to get used to their accent and they had to get used to ours and the words we use,” he added. But all in all, boys are boys no matter what country they are from. “Even boys from Europe are the same as us,” Chance said. Mason said, “It’s like I had two more brothers.” Robert noted that America has so many opportunities. “It’s amazing all the things you can do here. Even going to Wegmans is great. It’s huge,” Robert said. Morgan added, “I know right where the sweets (candy) aisle is!” Both Northern Irish boys agree that this has been a summer filled with much fun despite the particularly warm summer. “The heat has been fierce,” said Morgan. Chance and Mason agree. “The ICP is a fun experience,” Mason said. Robert and Morgan will never forget the summer of 2016. “We don’t want to go home,” Robert and Morgan said in unison. “We would love to come again, if we can.” This experience was one that the Lemcke/ Reynolds family will never forget. Martie

has many hopes for these two young Irish boys. “I hope that they take back to Ireland that we are all people and we are all the same. I hope that they have opened their hearts and these boys take these open hearts back to Ireland,” Martie said. A board member’s perspective Stephanie and Tim Cassidy have served on the ICP of Rochester’s Board since 1997 and are the longest serving board members. This couple decided to join the board after hosting a child. Over the almost 20 years, Stephanie has seen many Northern Irish children come through the program and many American families support the ICP of Rochester. One of the biggest goals of this program is to show the Northern Irish children how communities are not segregated in the United States. “It is our hope that the Northern Irish children understand that we don’t see these religious issues here in America, that communities are not segregated. We want the kids to bring the message of peace and understanding with them when they return to Northern Ireland,” Stephanie said. Since 1982, the ICP of Rochester has brought hundreds of children to the Rochester area. Some Northern Irish children have kept in touch with their

Some have remained involved with the program back in Northern Ireland. “We’ve had people who were part of the program when they were children now serve as board members. Recently another man, who came here as a child with the ICP in the 90s, traveled with the children and served as a chaperone. It’s great to see that the program is continuing,” Stephanie said. The future The ICP of Rochester will continue its mission to bring children to America, Stephanie said. “It’s important for people to know that these religious issues are still going on in Northern Ireland. You may not hear it in the news but it still exists and it may not be as

troublesome as in the past, but it still is a very real problem,” she added. As for Morgan and Robert and the other children from Northern Ireland - they’ve built friendships that will hopefully continue despite their differences. As Linny Lemcke explained, “This summer was the most amazing experience we could have had with these two boys because of the diversity and how we all acknowledged each others’ strengths and weaknesses.” Those are indeed life lessons regardless of any person’s age. 2016 Deer Hunting in Letchworth State Park Letchworth State Park has announced details about the 2016 hunting season. Legal implements for hunting in Letchworth are bow, crossbow, shotgun, muzzleloader and licensed handguns. Hunting with rifles is not allowed. Taking of Black Bear is not allowed. Applications are available by calling 585-493-3600 or online at www.nysparks. com and should be mailed to: Hunting Permit, One Letchworth State Park, Castile, NY 14427. For those not issued a permit for the first round of hunting (due September 7), applications will be submitted for a second chance season for hunting between November 28 and December 11 only. There will be 200 applications drawn for the west side and 300 for the east side in this drawing. In addition, archery hunting permits will be self-issued for the following schedule: East side hunting will begin Saturday, October 1 through Tuesday, December 20. West side hunting will take place Tuesday, October 18 through Tuesday, December 20. Crossbow hunting will be allowed from November 5 to November 18. Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Pelcher made six saves over 100 minutes of play to register her third shutout in three varsity games as Hilton and Gates-Chili played to a scoreless tie in girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; soccer at LeBeau Field. â&#x20AC;&#x153;280 minutes without a goal against; she has done her job communicating with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dâ&#x20AC;? and a lot of credit goes to the girls in front of her keeping second chances to a minimum and forcing many opponents to shoot from a distance,â&#x20AC;? Hilton head coach Steve Sorensen said of Pelcher. Seniors Jo Jo Ban and Allyson Strauss anchor that back line along with sophomores Julianna Murphy and Megan Letta. The Cadets had several scoring chances over the first 40 minutes starting with a cross by Kyndal Hetzel in the eighth minute that just missed connecting with Victoria Bisciotti. A shot from Alexis Distefano on the right wing needed a leaping save to stay out of the net in the thirteenth minute and, just four minutes later, Caitlyn Lloyd one-

touched around a defender but had her shot go just wide of the right post. Taylor Eccleston fed a pass to Bisciotti in the 23rd minute, but her redirect banged off the right post. Early in the second half a Hetzel shot from 30 yards was bobbled by the GatesChili goalkeeper and she almost carried it across the goal-line while falling to the ground in the 46th minute. The Spartans had their best scoring chance in the first overtime with a minibreakaway, but Murphy made up about ten yards to catch the attacker and knock the ball away from behind. Hilton had three more chances in the second overtime from Sienna Saluzzo, Murphy and Eccleston, but could not connect. They improved to 1-0-2 in the season, but have scored just one goal in 280 minutes of play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were young last year,â&#x20AC;? Sorensen said about his squad, which started two freshmen and five sophomores. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The ones who did the scoring last year should be scoring again this year, but we just havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been able to connect. Vergari, Bamburoski, Sweet combine for 27 kills by Warren Kozireski Jake Vergari had a team-high ten kills while John Bamburoski registered nine and Zach Sweet added eight to lead Brockport to a three game sweep over host Churchville-Chili in boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; volleyball. The Saints had an early lead in the first game, but the Blue Devils battled back before taking the lead for good at 12-11 on a net violation. A 20-15 lead quickly became 20-18 as Saints Dylan Angora and Tyler St. Denis had a kill and an ace respectively during a 3-0 run. But Vergari had a kill and a block on consecutive points before Hunter Tintera and Sweet finished off the 25-22 win with kills. The Blue Devils never trailed in a 25-19 game two victory. Game three was a back-and-forth affair with each team holding the lead a combined

ten times and ten other times the game was tied. Tied 19-19, Brockportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Vergari and Tintera had consecutive kills and Sweet added a block to make it 23-19 Blue Devils. A Saints kill by Christopher Lewis and an ace from Jarod Moore sandwiched a Sweet kill making it 24-22 Brockport. A net violation closed the Brockport lead to 24-23 before Sweet ended any comeback hopes with a kill to finish the 25-23 win. In addition to their kills, Sweet added two blocks to his game totals and Shawn Maira had a team high six blocks for the Blue Devils. Spencer Anderson dished out 33 assists and Troy Leibert added 12 digs as Brockport improved their record to 2-0. The 1-2 Saints were led by Angoraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nine kills, Ian Quinnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 14 assists, Griffin Stellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s two blocks and Mooreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seven kills, two blocks and three aces.

Rangers, Cadets win first tennis matches by Warren Kozireski After each team started the season with a pair of losses, Spencerport and Hilton rebounded to earn their first girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; tennis victories of the young season. Spencerport swept all three doubles matches and the top three singles to defeat Greece Arcadia/Olympia 6-1. First doubles Jenna Coffey and Jessica Hockinberger rebounded from a second set loss in the 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 win while the second doubles duo of Kayla Campbell and Taylor DiPilato won 7-5, 6-1. Third doubles Isabelle Haddad and Khanhlinh Huynh had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-3 win in straight sets.

The Rangers top singles player, Taylor Maier won 6-0, 6-2 while second singles Hannah Nguyen and third singles Karli Holtz took their matches 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2 respectively. For Hilton it was their top players who came through in their 4-3 win. Number one singles Britney Bostley lost her first set, but turned around her match in a hurry in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win. Second singles Katie Singleton won 6-3, 7-6 and thirds singles Jennifer Solow easily won 6-2, 6-1. First doubles Payton Cook and Reilly Mullen clinched the win with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 comeback win.

Monroe County 4-Hers participate in New York State Fair by Kristina Gabalski The New York State Fair wrapped up its 2016 run on Labor Day and 4-Hers who participated from Monroe County represented their county well. Tara Defendorf-Kuba, 4-H Youth Development, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County, says six members of the Monroe County 4-H K-9 Kids Dog Club participated in the NYS 4-H Dog Show at the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse on August 20. “The group came home with four grand championships, one reserve grand championship and a first place finisher in the Skill-A-Thon contest,” she says. The group is led by Joanne Dohr with training support from Gayle Persons.

Joe’s stories old, new, mostly true Fran turns 100 years old by Joe Reinschmidt On Saturday, August 20, dozens of friends, family and neighbors gathered to help Fran Blum celebrate her 100th birthday. She was known to me as Aunt Fran since I met her through her nephews Joe and Ed Blum who grew up on Pease Road. Their parents were Joseph and Inez Blum. Fran’s husband, John, was a brother of Joseph. Fran entered this world in August 1916 on a farm in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. She was the sixth of nine children in the Budinski family. When Fran was six, the family moved to Waterport, New York and later to Albion. Fran attended grades one through three at the Cobblestone Schoolhouse in Childs on Route 104. Like Fran, it still stands today. Fran however, doesn’t stand very tall anymore, perhaps about four feet, but her speech and demeanor make up for what she may lack in stature. When she was 10 the family gave up on farm work and moved to the Dutchtown area of Rochester’s west side. There Fran attended fourth through eighth grade at Holy Family School and then Madison High School. Fran worked odd jobs until she was hired at Taylor Instrument Co. where she was a glass technician for some of their instruments, thermometers and also some items Taylor made for submarines during WWII. In 1944 she enlisted in the Navy, becoming a medical assistant and a dental technician serving in Brooklyn, New York, Bethesda, Maryland and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. She was discharged in 1946 as a Hospital Apprentice First class and returned to work at Taylor’s Among the people in Dutchtown was a family named Blum and their daughter Eleanor was Fran’s best friend. Eleanor had three brothers: Elmer, Joseph and John who was known to be a pretty good baseball player for the local team. Through the families, John and Fran knew each other a long time and eventually began dating. Everyone was surprised when he asked her to marry him very quickly. Fran recalled how the friends and family were all counting the months after their marriage, apparently suspecting the usual reason for a hasty marriage. However, the fact was the couple learned that Grandma Budinski, Fran’s mother, was terminally ill. They wanted to get married while she was still able to be there and eventually could pass on knowing they were married. That was in 1949 and later they had one child, a daughter Barbara. Fran worked at the Smith Corona typewriter store in downtown Rochester, also at Sibley’s store and in the office at Holy Family School. She was active in Girl Scouts and became a Troop Leader. Fran retired from Holy Family in 1976. Subsequently, she and John moved to Conesus Lake to enjoy their retirement. After John died, she sold the home and moved to the Spencerport area where her daughter lived. Here she became active in St. John’s Church and as a member of the Ogden Senior Citizens. Her response as to how she made it to 100 was immediately stated as “faith, family, friends and prayer.” She recalled waking up on the morning of her birthday with a serious ache in her shoulder that went down her arm and was thinking about not getting up until she realized what day it was. “I said, ‘God you’ve got to help me get up and get through this day,’ ” she recalls saying and she did it wonderfully. As for the future it will be “one year at a time” and no thought of giving up her independent living apartment in the complex where she is living with many other seniors. Long live “Aunt” Fran!

Hawley announces much needed disaster relief coming to local farmers

State officials will conduct on-site assessments of the damage to local farms and work with Cornell University experts to devise recovery solutions. “Farmers are the backbone of New York’s already excellent, diversified and growing

agriculture sector,” Hawley said. “As the former owner and operator of our family farm for many years, I can personally attest to the determination of our famers to battle ever-changing weather and devastating floods and drought in Western New York. It is important to protect the livelihood of our producers and assist them when unforeseen circumstances threaten their prosperity. Program helps illuminate Churchville flag and clock tower by Kristina Gabalski Churchville Mayor Nancy Steedman says LED spotlights were recently installed at the Flagpole and Clock Tower/monument outside the Village Hall. The project was part of a new RAB Lighting Inc. community outreach program to honor those who serve by providing municipalities with a low cost opportunity to upgrade traditional lighting fixtures at monuments and memorials to low-maintenance, energy-efficient LED. “RAB Lighting donated $1,000 in fixtures for the site,” Mayor Steedman says. The fixtures were installed by Falcone Electric of Batavia. In a news release dated May 20, 2016, RAB states that the company will donate

free LED lighting fixtures to, “illuminate monuments, memorials, signs and other structures that honor the people who serve or have served the country or local community. This includes memorials and monuments that recognize the service of military, police, firefighters, EMS and educators in addition to illuminating official U.S. and state flags that are displayed at public parks and buildings.” Additionally, RAB says that the energy efficient LED lighting can help government agencies and municipalities save more than 80 percent on energy costs. Mayor Steedman says the Village of Churchville is also considering utilizing the RAB lighting program to illuminate the Veteran’s stone memorial located outside the Newman Riga Library.

The Gates Chili Chamber of Commerce will hold its State of the State presentation on Friday, September 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Legacy at Parklands, 2000 Park Creek Lane, in Chili. Senator Mike Razenhofer and Senator Joe Robach will each speak about what is happening in Albany and how it is affecting the towns of Gates and Chili. This event gives area businesses and community members an opportunity to

learn about the accomplishments and future plans of the two senators that represent the area. New events “fall” into Hamlin Recreation In an ongoing effort to provide communities with more opportunities to socialize and learn, the Town of Hamlin Recreation Department is offering new events this fall. For history buffs, Ed Evans will present a special event on the exciting history of Hamlin Beach State Park on Sunday, October 2 at 2 p.m. This presentation will include many stories and photographs that will transport the audience to pre and post WWII with dozens of photographs and fascinating stories about the Park’s construction and its later influence as a POW camp. The presentation will begin at the Charlie Maier Lodge and end with a tour of the site at the Park. Coffee and cake will be provided by the Hamlin Youth Group. For more varied fall weekends, Hamlin Recreation has created the Saturday Market. Since beginning on September 10, the Charlie Maier Lodge in the Hamlin Town Park will be devoted to the Saturday Market the first Saturday

of every other month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Entrance to the park is at 2806 Roosevelt Highway. Local vendors will display their wares while residents can come to browse, purchase, eat, learn ... or just hang out! The Concession Stand will be open to create a café atmosphere in a lovely facility. Various how-to demonstrations from cooking to small engine maintenance will be held throughout the event. Hamlin Recreation will accept more applications from local crafters or skilled professionals who would like to share their talents in How-To demonstrations for future market dates ranging in anything from wreath making to home maintenance.
